Abstract

Rhetoric and poetics have a long historical relationship; however, there is a dearth of literature in contemporary rhetorical studies that analyzes poems as forms of democratic dissent. This article begins with an assessment of John F. Kennedy’s eulogy of Robert Frost, followed with an analysis of Amiri Baraka’s “Black Art,” a poem that both supports and challenges Kennedy’s defense of poetry. Ultimately, this paper makes an argument for why critics might pay closer attention to poetry as both a medium for expressing dissenting messages and as an example of how language play itself can function as valuable democratic dissent. Abstract

Many American artists, writers, and filmmakers portrayed enlisted men returning at the end of World War II. It is surprising, however, to see how this gloom and trauma permeate the work of two unlikely figures: Robert Frost and Norman Rockwell. Frost, the poet of Vermont themes, did his best to avoid writing about the war, but his great poem "Directive," about a somber return home, is powerfully linked to 1945, the time in which it was written. Frost and Rockwell, both Vermont residents, did not know one another, and their aesthetic aims were not the same: Rockwell painted propaganda and Frost did his best to steer clear of propagandistic themes. Frost wrote "Directive" when he was seventy-one, and he published it in book form in Steeple Bush, his eighth volume of poetry. INSET: "Directive" by Robert Frost.

Four-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Robert Frost and the late Dr. Victor Reichert, rabbi of Rockdale Temple, were friends. In fact, their friendship was so important and so lasting that it influenced both their lives and their work. It also became the central thread in a little-known decades-long connection Frost had with Cincinnati. One of his clearest early memories was going to the train station in Oakland, California, to see his father off as a delegate to the 1880 Democratic National Convention, held in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Abstract

The article focuses on the comment by Lionel Trilling, the U.S. critic at the birthday of the U.S. poet Robert Frost. He pointed out, with heart-stirring allusions to Sophocles and the whole tradition of tragic poetry, the obvious fact that Frost has dark depths which make him something there than a rural Longfellow. Trilling confessed that he thinks of Frost as a "terrifying" poet, and that "the universe he conceives is a terrifying universe." Frost simply sees the universe as it is and accepts it.
