In this paper, we present a simple strategy that combines oxygen defect (O d) engineering with a 2D-on-2D homogeneous nanopape-like bilayer V 2 O 5 nH 2 O xerogel (BL-HVO d NPS). This strategy employs O d to improve Zn2+/Mg2+insertion/extraction kinetics and reduce irreversible processes for high-performance AZIBs/AMIBs. And interlayer water molecules serve as an effective spacer to stabilize the expanded interlayer gap in BL-HVO d NPS, thereby providing extended diffusion channels for Zn2+/Mg2+ during insertion/extraction. The interlayer water molecules help shield the electrostatic interaction between Zn2+/Mg2+ and BL-HVO d NPS lattice, which improves diffusion kinetics during repeated. In addition, electrochemical characterization results indicate that the BL-HVO d NPS can effectively the surface adsorption and internal diffusion of Zn2+/Mg2+. More importantly, the successfully prepared unique 2D-on-2D homogenous nanopaper structure enhances electrolyte/electrode contact and reduces the migration/diffusion path of electrons/Zn2+ and Mg2+, thus greatly improving rate performance. As a result, the BL-HVO d NPS as AZIBs/AMIBs electrodes offer better reversible capacity of 361.8 and 162.8 mA h g−1 (at 0.2 A g−1), while displaying impressively long cycle lifes. Carbon materials with layered structure and high conductivity are promising electrode candidates for dual-ion batteries (DIBs). However, the size mismatch of electrolyte ions and interlayer spacing of carbon materials limits the overall performance of DIBs. Thus, finding an effective strategy to adjust the interlayer spacing of carbon materials is of great importance. Here, we describe an efficient electrochemical strategy combining ion pre-intercalation and gas evolution reaction treatment to expand the interlayer spacing and modify graphene layers of carbon fiber papers. Furthermore, through the theoretical calculation we have demonstrated that the anion adsorption energy is reduced and kinetics is accelerated by the introduction of functional groups on the graphene layer. After the electrochemical modification, the discharge capacity of CFP increases more than 50%, the transfer resistance reduces even more than 40% and the capacity retains 94% after 1000 cycles in an ionic liquid electrolyte. These promising results demonstrate an effective and convenient method to solve the size mismatch issue, and therefore, arouse the potentials of carbon materials and other materials with layered structure for high performance DIBs. X-ray spectroscopy is a valuable technique for the study of many materials systems. Characterizing reactions in situ and operando can reveal complex reaction kinetics, which is crucial to understanding active site composition and reaction mechanisms. In this project, the design, fabrication and testing of an open-source and easy-to-fabricate electrochemical cell for in situ electrochemistry compatible with X-ray absorption spectroscopy in both transmission and fluorescence modes are accomplished via windows with large opening angles on both the upstream and downstream sides of the cell. Using a hobbyist computer numerical control machine and free 3D CAD software, anyone can make a reliable electrochemical cell using this design. Onion-like carbon nanoparticles, with a 1:3 iron-to-cobalt ratio, were drop-coated onto carbon paper for testing in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry of the carbon paper showed the expected behavior, with no increased ohmic drop, even in sandwiched cells. Chronoamperometry was used to apply 0.4 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, with and without 15 min of oxygen purging to ensure that the electrochemical cell does not provide any artefacts due to gas purging. The XANES and EXAFS spectra showed no differences with and without oxygen, as expected at 0.4 V, without any artefacts due to gas purging. The development of this open-source electrochemical cell design allows for improved collection of in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy data and enables researchers to perform both transmission and fluorescence simultaneously. Carbonaceous materials, especially with graphite‐layers structure, as anode for potassium‐ion batteries (PIBs), are the footstone for industrialization of PIBs. However, carbonaceous materials with graphite‐layers structure usually suffer from poor cycle life and inferior stability, not to mention freestanding and flexible PIBs. Here, a freestanding and flexible 3D hybrid architecture by introducing carbon dots on the reduced graphene oxide surface (CDs@rGO) is synthesized as high performance PIBs anode. The CDs@rGO paper has efficient electron and ion transfer channels due to its unique structure, thus enhancing reaction kinetics. In addition, the CDs provide abundant defects and oxygen‐containing functional groups, which can improve the electrochemical performance. This freestanding and flexible anode exhibits the high capacity of 310 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1, ultra‐long cycle life (840 cycles with a capacity of 244 mAh g−1 at 200 mA g−1), and excellent rate performance (undergo six consecutive currents changing from 100 to 500 mA g−1, high capacity 185 mAh g−1 at 500 mA g−1), outperforming many existing carbonaceous PIB anodes. Aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs) are emerging as promising candidates for efficient energy storage in grid-scale applications. In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis comparing the performance of thermally treated carbon paper and chemically oxidized carbon cloth electrodes, which have been extensively examined for their potential suitability in AORFBs. Results indicate that carbon cloth electrodes exhibit a higher concentration of oxygenated functional groups, contributing to enhanced electrochemical kinetics and improved electrochemical stability. These attributes translate to an AORFB with 62 times higher power density when compared to paper-based electrodes used. Through repeated charge-discharge cycles utilizing the BQDS║AQS model as a representative AORFB prototype, superior performance in the carbon cloth electrodes is consistently observed. [Display omitted] • A MIP paper-based electrochemical cell was developed for the determination of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. • The linear concentration range was between 5.0 to 1000 µmol/L. • The device was successfully applied in different honey samples. The concentration of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has become one of the most useful parameters for the quality evaluation of honey − a crucial focus within the honey industry. In this work, a voltammetric molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) paper-based electrochemical cell for the rapid quantification of HMF in honey is presented for the first time. Carbon ink was used to produce a custom-designed working electrode on chromatographic paper. The selected functional monomer was 4-aminobenzoic acid (ABA). MIP was obtained by electropolymerization directly on electrodes. The preparation process of the MIP, as well as the integrity of the paper platform, were investigated and optimized. Cyclic voltammetry was employed to characterize the sensor. Based on the optimized conditions, it revealed an imprinting factor of 13.5, a linear response in the range between 5.0 and 1000 µmol/L with a limit of detection of 0.608 mg kg−1. The sensor's practical applicability for the quantification of HMF in honey samples was successfully tested, demonstrating good performance compared with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). With the inherent sustainable properties of paper platforms, this cost-effective and disposable MIP paper-based electrochemical cell holds promise as a viable alternative for on-site monitoring of HMF in honey. This study introduces a disposable electrochemical sensor fabricated from readily available low-cost materials. The design features a three-electrode electrochemical cell made of a simple graphite dry lubricant and silicone sealant composite, screen-printed onto a sulphite paper substrate. The ideal composite mixture was stablished through factorial design. The sensors were applied to the electroanalytical detection of triclosan, an antimicrobial agent used in personal care products, with concerns about its impact on ecosystems and human health. A subsequent factorial design determined the optimal voltammetric conditions. This approach yielded a method with limits of detection and quantification of 0.05 μmol L–1 and 0.17 μmol L–1, respectively, with a linear range from 0.20 μmol L–1 to 10.30 μmol L–1 for triclosan. The method was successfully applied to analyze triclosan in tap water and personal care products, including toothpaste, mouthwash, and liquid soap, achieving recovery rates ranging from 96 % to 118 %. Paper electronics offer an environmentally sustainable option for flexible and wearable systems and perfectly fit the available printing technologies for high manufacturing efficiency. As the heart of energy‐consuming devices, paper‐based batteries are required to be compatible with printing processes with high fidelity. Herein, hydrogel reinforced cellulose paper (HCP) is designed to serve as the separator and solid electrolyte for paper batteries. The HCP can sustain higher strain than pristine papers and are biodegradable in natural environment within four weeks. Zinc‐metal (Ni and Mn) batteries printed on the HCP present remarkable volumetric energy density of ≈26 mWh cm–3, and also demonstrate the feature of cuttability and compatibility with flexible circuits and devices. As a result, self‐powered electronic system could be constructed by integrating printed paper batteries with solar cells and light‐emitting diodes. In this work, a simple procedure for construction of disposable electrochemical paper‐based analytical devices (ePADs) by screen‐printing using low‐cost materials and a home craft electronic printer is proposed. The devices were constructed using liner paper as a substrate and carbon ink prepared with graphite powder and wood glue. The ePAD was evaluated as an electrochemical sensor and biosensor. The proposed conductive carbon‐based ink can be easily prepared and is an eco‐friendly and non‐toxic material. A novel method of coupling electrochemistry (EC) with mass spectrometry (MS) is illustrated with a paper-based electrochemical cell supported by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The electrochemically formed ions, created at appropriate electrochemical potentials, are ejected into the gas phase from the modified paper, without the application of additional potential. The electrochemical cell was fabricated by using a rectangular CNT-coated Whatman 42 filter paper with printed electrodes, using silver paste. This was used for studying the electrochemical conversion of thiols to disulfides, and the functionalization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which involve S–S and C–C bond formations, respectively. We also demonstrate the versatility of the set-up by utilizing it for the detection of radical cations of metallocenes, monitoring the oxidation of sulfides through the detection of reactive intermediates, and the detection of radical cations of PAHs, all of which occur at specific applied potentials. Finally, the applicability of this technique for qualitative and quantitative analyses of environmentally relevant molecules has been demonstrated by studying the electrochemical oxidation of glucose (Glu) to gluconic acid (GlcA) and saccharic acid (SacA). In this study, we introduce a uricase-immobilized paper (UOx--paper) integrated electrochemical sensor for detection of uric acid (UA) in saliva. The UOx was immobilized on the detection zone in the wax-patterned paper substrate. This UOx-paper was integrated with a Prussian blue--modified, screen-printed carbon electrode after electropolymerization of o-phenylenediamine to construct an electrochemical cell for small-volume (20 μL) of samples. First, we optimized the fabrication conditions of UOx-paper. Next, the amperometric response of the UOx-paper-based electrochemical UA sensor was analyzed using a known concentration of UA standard solution in artificial saliva at an applied potential of − 0.1 V (versus Ag pseudo-reference electrode). The UOx--paper based electrochemical UA sensor showed a sensitivity of 4.9 μA·mM−1 in a linear range of 50 to 1000 μM (R2 = 0.998), high selectivity and good reproducibility, as well as a limit of detection of 18.7 μM (0.31 mg/dL) UA. Finally, we quantified the UA levels in undiluted saliva samples of healthy controls (n = 20) and gout patients (n = 8). The levels were correlated with those measured with conventional salivary UA enzymatic assays as well as serum UA levels. The sensing mechanisms of common humidity sensors related to conductive active materials, which can be simply attributed to the variations in resistivity due to the separation of conductive materials and variations in polymer permittivity, are generally plagued by drawbacks such as cumbersome fabrication processes, high cost and low performance. Herein, we prepared Zn/Cellulose filter paper (CFP)/Nanoscale carbon ink (NCI)/Cu structure humidity power generators (ZHGs) based on the power generation principle of typical zinc-air batteries, using active metals with strong conductivity as electrodes, and the redox reactions that took place in the zinc-air battery can convert the chemical energy in the electrode into a stable electrical energy. The ZHG fabricated in this work can reach an extremely high open circuit voltage (V oc) of 0.803 V at 97 % RH and possesses an excellent power density of 312.24 μW/cm2, which has a good linear relationship (R 2 = 0.9669) over a wide humidity range (20–97 % RH). In addition, 10 ZHGs in series can charge commercial capacitors up to 3.83 V. Finally, the proof of concept demonstrated that the humidity power generation sensor can be well applied in human respiratory monitoring, finger non-contact switch, and power supply for light emitting diode (LED). An electroanalytical platform capable to take and dilute the sample has been designed in order to fully integrate the different steps of the analytical process in only one device. The concept is based on the addition of glass-fiber pads for sampling and diluting to an electrochemical cell combining a paper-based working electrode with low-cost connector headers as counter and reference electrodes. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of this all-in-one platform for biosensing applications, an enzymatic sensor for glucose determination (requiring a potential as low as −0.1 V vs. gold-plated wire by using ferrocyanide as mediator) was developed. Real food samples, such as cola beverages and orange juice, have been analyzed with the bioelectroanalytical lab-on-paper platform. As a proof-of-concept, and trying to go further in the integration of steps, sucrose was successfully detected by depositing invertase in the sampling strip. This enzyme hydrolyzes sucrose into fructose and glucose, which was determined using the enzymatic biosensor. This approach opens the pathway for the development of devices applying the lab-on-paper concept, saving costs and time, and making possible to perform decentralized analysis with high accuracy. Reforming of hydrocarbon which is an important hydrogen production method proceeds in two steps, i.e. steam reforming and shift reaction. Due to different thermodynamics, the two reactions are conventionally conducted at different temperatures. This study examines one step methane reforming by use of proton-conducting electrochemical cell in combination with a reforming catalyst. Promotion of the reforming reaction was intended by extracting hydrogen via electrochemical hydrogen pumping with a proton conductor cell. In order to compensate for the slow kinetics of the steam reforming, a paper catalyst loaded with Ni was placed in front of the electrochemical cell. Electrolyte support cells were used to verify this concept, and the effect of the electrochemical hydrogen pump was investigated from the composition of the outlet gas. Electrode support cells using a thin film electrolyte was used to reduce overvoltage. It is demonstrated that the steam reforming reaction and the shift reaction take place in one electrochemical cell. Effective catalyst placement and energy efficiency is discussed. Reforming of methane was performed for hydrogen producing with proton conducting SrZr 0.5 Ce 0.4 Y 0.1 O 3-δ (SZCY541) and Ni-loaded paper-structured catalyst (Ni-PSC). When Ni-PSC is used as anode, electrode-supported cell shows enough H 2 evolution rate in agreeing with Faraday's law. In this research, a novel property of activated carbon powder (AC powder) has been utilized to realize a disposable paper-based battery. AC powder was loaded on a 3D carbon paper substrate to make the anode. The cathode was integrated directly on the paper-based battery case by coating multiwalled carbon nanotube mixed with potassium ferricyanide on a side of a sheet of filter paper, the other side worked as a paper-based proton exchange membrane. This design provides a simple but practical disposable wateractivated battery. The developed battery generated the maximum power density of 10.4 µW/cm2 at the AC powder concentration of 17 mg/cm2. Although, the output power of the battery is low, it is made of low-cost and abundant materials, and therefore being able to scale up. A binder-free activated carbon paper (ACP) was simply prepared for electric double-layer capacitors by the carbonization of filter paper, followed by heat-air activation at a lower temperature. The electrochemical cells assembled using the as-prepared ACP-470 provides a high specific capacitance of 296.4 F g at current density of 0.5 A g and a high rate performance at a current density of 150 A g with a capacitance of 191.2 F g and a high cycle ability at 10,000 recycles with 100 % capacitance retention. In addition, the ACP has a lower electrical resistivity and provides an effective energy storage performance with a maximum energy density of 41.2 Wh kg and a maximum power density of 138.0 kW kg in a voltage range of 1 V. Fly-ash is a by-product of various thermal power plants. The utilization of fly-ash is a big concern in the current scenario as its production rate is much higher than its consumption rate. Cenosphere is one of the most value-added fractions of coal fly-ash. It has a hollow spherical structure and can be applied in many industrial applications, due to its superior properties, such as low bulk density, good thermal resistance, high strength, etc. The present work deals with the usage of fly-ash cenosphere to develop the paper battery and electrochemical battery. The study demonstrates the process of chemical deposition of Cu-ion on cenosphere by electro-less plating technique using silver-nitrate as an activator. Subsequently, metal-ion-coated cenosphere is used for developing the paper battery and electrochemical battery; testing is done by measuring the open circuit voltage (OCV) and by analyzing the discharge curves of battery. The present work analyzes various factors and characteristics affecting the performance of developed batteries. The objective of present work is to explore the applications of low-cost materials like cenosphere, ordinary paper, cotton-balls and aluminum powder for developing thinner batteries like paper battery. As a basic component of batteries, separators are proposed to apart the two electrodes while allowing the transport of ionic charge carriers. Cellulose separators have attracted tremendous attention due to their excellent thermal stability and wettability. In this study, we prepare all-cellulose composite (ACC) separators coated with Zn 5 (OH) 8 Cl 2 ·H 2 O (ZHC) particles. The surface of the cellulose filter paper is partially dissolved by the 65% ZnCl 2 solution, forming a tortuous and porous all-cellulose composite membrane. At the same time, ZHC is generated in situ on the surface during the removal of residual ZnCl 2 from the cellulose, which effectively promotes the passage of a sodium ion (Na+) and substantially improves the cycling performance of the batteries. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that suitable adsorption energy on ZHC is favorable for promoting Na+ transport. The corresponding ACC separator exhibits high ionic conductivity (2.75 mS/cm) and Na+ transference number (0.82), correspondingly the assembled Na/hard carbon half-cells show an excellent reversible specific capacity (315 mA h/g at 25 mA/g) and cycling stability (the retention is 97.77% after 50 cycles at 50 mA/g), outperforming the glass fiber separator in both sodium-ion half-cell and full-cell. This work describes the development of a paper-based platform for highly sensitive detection of diclofenac. The quantification of this anti-inflammatory drug is of importance in clinical (e.g. quality and therapeutic control) and environmental (e.g. emerging contaminant determination) areas. The easy-to-handle platform here described consists of a carbon-ink paper-based working electrode and two metallic wires, provided by a gold-plated standard connector, as reference and counter electrodes. The porous paper matrix enables the preconcentration of the sample, decoupling sample and detection solutions. Thus, relatively large sample volumes can be used, which significantly improves the sensitivity of the method. A wide dynamic range of four orders of magnitude, between 0.10 and 100 μM, was obtained for diclofenac determination. Due to the predominance of adsorption at the lowest concentrations, there were two linear concentration ranges: one comprised between 0.10 and 5.0 μM (with a slope of 0.85 μA μM−1) and the other between 5.0 and 100 μM (with a slope of 0.48 μA μM−1). A limit of detection of 70 nM was achieved with this simple device that provided accurate results with an RSD of ca. 5%. The platform was applied for diclofenac quantification in spiked tap water samples. The versatility of this design enabled the fabrication of a multiplexed platform containing eight electrochemical cells that work independently. Al-air batteries are generally fabricated by rigid and heavyweight materials such as metal or plastic, meanwhile a bulky electrolyte solution either in static or circulation is requisite to ensure their steady operation. Therefore, they are less suitable for powering flexible and portable devices with lower power demand, such as wearable electronics, point-of-care test assays, RFID tags, etc. This work develops a flexible and lightweight Al-air battery with much less electrolyte storage, which is totally fabricated on a cellulose paper. The Al foil anode is embedded inside the paper substrate during paper-making process, while the air-breathing cathode is deposited onto the paper surface using an oxygen reduction ink. Despite its simple structure and low cost, this flexible Al-air battery can deliver a satisfactory power density of 19 mW cm−2 with alkaline electrolyte, and its operation lifespan is as long as 58 h with only 25 mg Al when saline electrolyte is employed. The corresponding Al specific capacity is as high as 2338 mA h g−1. In addition, this battery exhibits an excellent flexibility when facing different bending angles from 60 to 180° and multiple bending times greater than 1000. Furthermore, a flexible current or voltage output can be easily obtained by scaling up or stacking the present flexible Al-air battery, respectively, and the corresponding stacking efficiency is as high as 94%. A new, simple and low‐cost method for patterning hydrophobic barriers in porous support such as paper by Parafilm® has been introduced. This method is then used for electrochemical paper‐based ammonia sensor construction. Ammonia sensor is based on electrochemical concentration cell which ammonia reaction with electrolyte in halves cell caused in concentration gradient and therefore potential difference dependent on ammonia concentration. The effect of concentrations of the involved chemicals, time periods of the required processes, the presence of Faraday cage as well as the effects of different salts used in the salt bridge on the response of the sensor, were investigated in order to find the optimized conditions. High efficiency, good safety, eco-friendliness and low cost batteries are significant for electronic vehicles. In this aspect, nickel-zinc (Ni-Zn) battery attracts great interest for its high output voltage and energy density. Here, with one-step hydrothermal reaction, NiMOF nanotube is grown on Chinese Xuan Paper derived carbon paper, which is employed as positive electrode material in Ni-Zn battery directly. The unique morphology of NiMOF nanotube not only provides sufficient space for fully contact between active centers and electrolyte, but also facilitates the diffusion of electrons. This electrode exhibits capacitive property. At 1 ​A ​g−1, the capacity achieves 258 mAh·g−1. Its rate capacity is also outstanding. As current increases to 20 ​A ​g−1, the capacity still keeps at 198 mAh·g−1. When it serves as positive electrode and Zn plate acts as negative electrode, a rechargeable Ni-Zn battery is assembled. The voltage of this battery achieves 1.76 ​V. It can also deliver energy density 375.5 ​Wh·kg−1 with power density 15.9 ​kW ​kg−1. Additionally, this battery also possesses superior stability with 92.8% capacity retained after 9000 cycle charge-discharge tests. These merits make NiMOF become an ideal positive electrode for Zn-Ni battery, which is an attractive power supplier in the future. Paper microfluidics is used to produce single layer galvanic and hybrid cells to produce energy that could power paper-based analytical sensors. When two aqueous streams are absorbed onto paper to establish co-laminar flow, the streams stay in contact with each other with limited mixing. The interface at which mixing occurs acts as a charge-transfer region, eliminating the need for a salt bridge. We designed a Cu Zn galvanic cell that powers an LED when two are placed in series. We also used more powerful redox couples (formate and silver, formate and permanganate) to produce higher power density (18 and 3.1 mW mg −1 Pd). These power densities are greater than previously reported paper microfluidic fuel cells using formate or methanol. Paper-based microfluidics (lab on paper) emerges as an innovative platform for building small-scale devices for sensing, diagnosis, and energy storage/conversions due to the power-free fluidic transport capability of paper via capillary action. Herein, we report for the first time that paper-based microfluidic concept can be employed to fabricate high-performing aluminum–air batteries, which entails the use of a thin sheet of fibrous capillary paper sandwiched between an aluminum foil anode and a catalyst coated graphite foil cathode without using any costly air electrode or external pump device for fluid transport. The unique microfluidic configuration can help overcome the major drawbacks of conventional aluminum–air batteries including battery self-discharge, product-induced electrode passivation, and expensive and complex air electrodes which have long been considered as grand obstacles to aluminum–air batteries penetrating the market. The paper-based microfluidic aluminum–air batteries are not only miniaturized in size, easy to fabricate and cost-effective, but they are also capable of high electrochemical performance. With a specific capacity of 2750 A h kg−1 (@20 mA cm−2) and an energy density of 2900 W h kg−1, they are 8.3 and 12.6 times higher than those of the non-fluidic counterpart and significantly outperform many other miniaturized energy sources, respectively. In this work, we present a multiplexed (eight simultaneous measurements) paper-based electrochemical device developed in a very simple way and using low-cost materials, such as paper, carbon ink and multifunctional connector headers. Meanwhile, we have also combined the paper-based electrochemical platform with a glass-fiber strip in order to integrate easily a sampling step. Both approaches, simultaneous measuring and sampling, have been applied to the determination of glucose using bienzymatic biosensors. They are fabricated by adsorbing the mixture of enzymes (glucose oxidase and horseradish peroxidase), as well as the ferrocyanide, mediator of the electron transfer, on the paper-based electrode. After drying, the measuring solution (containing either glucose standards or samples) is added and the eight corresponding chronoamperograms are recorded. In the case of the microfluidic approach for sampling purposes, the glass-fiber pad (sampler) is immersed in a container with the solution, which flows by capillarity until it reaches the working electrode. The integration of one more step of the analytical process advances towards real and useful lab-on-a-chip devices. With these designs, a linear range comprised between 0.5 and 15 mM was achieved for glucose determination, with an excellent precision. If the sampler is employed, it is not necessary to use micropipettes and, nevertheless, precise measurements are obtained. The RSD of the slopes obtained for different calibrations performed in different days, with different arrays of electrochemical cells and different solutions is ca. 1%. Abstract A simple, low cost, and lightweight three-dimensional (3D) primary alkaline Zn/Fe 3 O 4 origami-battery fabricated from Whatman 1 paper was developed. The battery was created using printed wax to define the hydrophobic and hydrophilic barriers and active electrocatalytic materials for fabricating the electrodes. The boat-shaped 3D-battery consisted of two screen-printed Zn/Fe 3 O 4 batteries connected in series that were activated with a small volume of aqueous KOH solution. The metallic electrodes were first characterized outside the folded battery using electrochemical techniques. Subsequently, the electrodes and separator were assembled together in a triangle-shaped battery resembling the main structure of the boat-shaped 3D-device and this triangle-shaped battery was further optimized. The addition of water triggered the activation of the 3D battery delivering a maximum current and power of 7 mA and 3 mW, respectively. The 3D-Zn/Fe 3 O 4 -battery displayed an OCP of 2.2 V and a maximum current and power of 22 mA and 7.5 mW, respectively, in the presence of 6 M KOH electrolyte. This work presents the development and optimization of a very low cost, miniaturized and lightweight aluminum/silver oxide (Al/AgO) primary battery. The system is implemented on painted paper supported electrodes and it is activated using a small amount of water. The anode contains an improved composite based on aluminum powder. The cathode is made using an electrical conductive silver epoxy ink. The device displays a paper-based core comprising the electrodes and the paper matrix separator, modified with a highly concentrated dry potassium hydroxide salt, inside a flexible laminated plastic structure that provides sturdiness to the system making it safe and portable for the user. The battery turns on by applying 80 μl of water and as a result the system produces a maximum capacity of 0.5 mAh when 1.6 mA cm −2 are applied. The generated electrical power of two batteries in series is then used to power a LED during approximately one hour. Although there is room for improvement, these results allow envisaging the battery as a real commercial portable power source and allow planning potential uses of this energy to power microelectronics demanding low power consumption, such as sensors or wearable electronics. Abstract: This study proposes a conformal surface coating of conducting polymer for protecting 1D nanostructured electrode material, thereby enabling a free‐standing electrode without binder for sodium ion batteries. Here, polypyrrole (PPy), which is one of the representative conducting polymers, encapsulated cobalt phosphide (CoP) nanowires (NWs) grown on carbon paper (CP), finally realizes 1D core–shell CoP@PPy NWs/CP. The CoP core is connected to the PPy shell via strong chemical bonding, which can maintain a Co–PPy framework during charge/discharge. It also possesses bifunctional features that enhances the charge transfer and buffers the volume expansion. Consequently, 1D core–shell CoP@PPy NWs/CP demonstrates superb electrochemical performance, delivering a high areal capacity of 0.521 mA h cm−2 at 0.15 mA cm−2 after 100 cycles, and 0.443 mA h cm−2 at 1.5 mA cm−2 even after 1000 cycles. Even at a high current density of 3 mA cm−2, a significant areal discharge capacity reaching 0.285 mA h cm−2 is still maintained. The outstanding performance of the CoP@PPy NWs/CP free‐standing anode provides not only a novel insight into the modulated volume expansion of anode materials but also one of the most effective strategies for binder‐free and free‐standing electrodes with decent mechanical endurance for future secondary batteries. The functionality of paper-based diagnostic devices can be significantly enhanced by their integration with an on-board energy source. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of paper-based electrochemical cells on wax paper using CO2 laser surface treatment and micromachining. A four cell zinc–copper battery shows a steady open-circuit voltage of ∼3 V and can provide 0.25 mA for at least 30 min when connected to a 10 kΩ load. Herein, we proposed a facile strategy for preparing well-distributed Sb-doped SnO 2 nanoparticles on carbon paper (CP) via electrodeposition and in-situ oxidation as bifunctional electrodes for vanadium redox flow batteries. SnO 2 and Sb-doped SnO 2 modified carbon paper (CP-SnO 2 and CP-SnO 2 /Sb) was respectively obtained by electrodepositing metals (Sn and Sn/Sb) nanoparticles, followed by a conversion to metal oxides with in-situ oxidation. CP-SnO 2 exhibited better electrochemical performance toward V3+/V2+ and VO2+/VO 2 + redox reactions than CP. This is because SnO 2 increases active sites and hydrophilicity, which accelerates electrochemical kinetic and mass transfer for vanadium redox reactions. CP-SnO 2 /Sb had better electrochemical activity than CP-SnO 2 , because smaller Sb-doped SnO 2 nanoparticles more effectively disperse through carbon fibers, producing more active sites. Furthermore, Sb doping improved conductivity of SnO 2. Briefly, CP-SnO 2 /Sb exhibited excellent hydrophilicity, abundant active sites, and good conductivity, resulting in superior electrochemical activity. We next employed CP-SnO 2 /Sb as bifunctional electrodes in cell. The cell using CP-SnO 2 /Sb had better cycling stability and more capacity retention during a 50-cycle charge–discharge test at 50 mA cm−2. CP-SnO 2 /Sb reduced the electrochemical polarization of cell at higher current density. We propose a flexible, binder-free and free-standing carbonaceous paper fabricated via electrostatic spray deposition using reduced graphene oxide/carbon nanotube (rGO/CNT) as a promising electrode material for flexible sodium-ion batteries (NIBs). The as-prepared rGO/CNT paper exhibits a three-dimensional (3D) layered structure by employing rGO as conductive frameworks to provide sodium-storage active sites and CNT as spacer to increase rGO interlayer distance and benefit the diffusion kinetics of sodium ions. Consequently, the rGO/CNT paper delivers an enhanced sodium ion storage capacity of 166.8 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1, retaining an average capacity of 101.4 mAh g−1 when current density sets back 100 mA g−1 after cycling at various current rates. An average capacity of 50 mAh g−1 at 200 mA g−1 was stabilized when cycling up to 300 cycles. The well-maintained electrochemical performance of free-standing rGO/CNT paper is due to the well-established hybrid 3D nanostructures, which demonstrates our carbon based material fabricated by a facile approach can be applied as one of the high-performance and low-cost electrode materials for applications in flexible energy storage devices. Conventional Al-air battery is not suitable for mini-watt applications due to bulky liquid storage and complex water management. To achieve successful simplification and miniaturization, an innovative paper-based Al-air battery is developed in this study, which employs cellulose paper as electrolyte substrate, low-grade Al foil as anode and carbon paper as cathode. Despite its simple structure and low cost, this battery achieves satisfactory power output together with high efficiency. With alkaline electrolyte, an open-circuit voltage of 1.6 V, a peak power density of 21 mW cm−2 and a specific capacity of 1273 mA h g−1 are obtained. With saline electrolyte, the battery can continuously work at 1 mA cm−2 for 5.6 h with only 3.5 mg Al. In addition, it is found that the paper-based electrolyte delivery can suppress Al corrosion in alkaline environment, enabling the direct utilization of low-grade Al resources. Moreover, the battery performance is improved by optimizing properties of its components, such as cathode catalyst, electrode area ratio and paper substrate thickness. Finally, a 5-cell battery pack is successfully developed, achieving an open-circuit voltage of 7.7 V and a stacking efficiency as high as 97%. Nowadays, modern industries generate their energy by using renewable solar. The rapid increase in photovoltaic (PV) module installations provides a better energy conversion, but their life cycle is a major concern. This research paper focuses on the recycling process for solar PV modules using the Internet of Things in industries. The smart bin with the Internet of Things (IoT) utilizes a machine learning approach to collect solar waste. The proposed smart bin uses k-Nearest Neighbor's algorithm (k-NN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), a network-based learning algorithm. These algorithms are useful in updating the level of the bin via alert messages. It also helps in identifying the type of waste material. The k-NN algorithm provides 83% accuracy in predicting the bin level in a real-time testing environment. The smart dust bin classifies the waste materials, and notifies its level to the collection center through the IoT platform when the level reaches a prescribed threshold, the signal corresponding to the level is passed to the common waste collection unit. IoT is connected to Cloud Server. It helps to predict the level of the smart bin. Delay is introduced in the order of 3–8 s while the alert message is sent to the common waste collection unit. The system monitors the smart bin levels and sends the notifications to alert and initiate the collection unit. Real-time mobile app monitors the bin's level and location. The cloud IoT analytics analyze the solar e-waste in a different locations in industries.The proposed system works better and provides accurate results by using machine learning approach. Pyridinic and graphitic nitrogen are recognized as the most promising dopants for promoting oxygen reactions since they are beneficial to the formation of corresponding C–N bonds as efficient active sites. However, complete control of such efficient nitrogen-doping sites in carbon materials is difficult to realize in practice in a pyrolysis process. Here, we present maximized pyridinic and graphitic nitrogen-doped oxygen electrode via the precise use of nitrogen-containing precursors and carbonization temperature. The critical roles of pyridinic and graphitic nitrogen dopants in enhancing oxygen reaction activity are unraveled and this highly active material exhibits a remarkable half-wave potential of 0.89 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and a small potential gap of 0.78 V between ORR and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 0.1 M KOH, which is one of the best to date among metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts. Both zinc-air batteries using liquid electrolytes and the all-solid-state batteries assembled with such air cathodes exhibit excellent cycle performance and reversibility, which can be expressly observed by in-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization. This nitrogen dopants engineering strategy gives an effective methodology to make full use of nanocarbon materials for their practical applications in next-generation powerful and durable energy devices. A portable paper‐based organic redox flow primary battery using sustainable quinone chemistry is presented. The compact prototype relies on the capillary forces of the paper matrix to develop a quasi‐steady flow of the reactants through a pair of porous carbon electrodes without the need of external pumps. Co‐laminar capillary flow allows operation Under mixed‐media conditions, in which an alkaline anolyte and an acidic catholyte are employed. This feature enables higher electrochemical cell voltages during discharge operation and the utilization of a wider range of available species and electrolytes and provides the advantage to form a neutral or near‐neutral pH as the electrolytes neutralize at the absorbent pad, which allows a safe disposal after use. The effects of the device design parameters have been studied to enhance battery features such as power output, operational time, and fuel utilization. The device achieves a faradaic efficiency of up to 98 %, which is the highest reported in a capillary‐based electrochemical power source, as well as a cell capacity of up to 11.4 Ah L−1 cm−2, comparable to state‐of‐the‐art large‐scale redox flow cells. An automotive battery, also known as a car battery, is a device that provides electrical energy to start a vehicle's engine; it uses chemical reactions between lead (Pb) and other chemicals to generate electricity. The automotive industry has been receiving positive feedback from consumers, and the industry has been striving to improve the quality of its product packaging, which protects the battery and facilitates its distribution. The research aims to increase customer satisfaction in the automotive industry by creating better battery packaging design. The research employs a range of methods to achieve this goal, including conducting an initial survey with customers who have purchased and used car batteries to identify problems, 3D computer-aided design (CAD) to create design packaging development, life-cycle assessment (LCA) to measure the environmental impact of various materials and contains sustainability analysis, and finite element analysis (FEA) simulation of the packaging corrugated paper using SolidWorks 2021 software, and lastly, a customer feedback survey is conducted to assess the attributes of packaging development. The design criteria prioritize green materials, ergonomics, durability, reliability, and ease of use. In conclusion, the study recommends the use of corrugated paper for battery packaging in the automotive industry. Municipal solid waste (MSW) is massively generated all over the world. Its organic fraction (OFMSW), which represents a high percentage of MSW, mainly contains biodegradable materials, namely food waste, paper and garden waste. The social cost of OFMSW treatment and/or disposal is a serious and widespread problem, particularly in highly populated areas. Thus, effective and innovative solutions, which include the upgrading of OFMSW, are being currently sought. In fact, the OFMSW abundance, availability and average composition suggest its considerable potential within the circular economy desideratum, paving the way to valorisation approaches. In this context, an OFMSW sugar-rich hydrolysate and its validation as a substrate for the production of the polyester poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P(3HB)), to date the only bioplastic easily biodegradable in marine environment, were successfully obtained in a previous study. Based on those results, this work addresses the upscaling of the fermentative production, in fed-batch mode, of P(3HB) by Burkholderia sacchari. The OFMSW hydrolysate was used as cultivation medium due to its balanced nutrient composition, while a plum waste juice, also rich in sugars, was applied as feed to the bioreactor. By implementing this strategy, a maximum P(3HB) production of 30 g·L−1 with an accumulation of 43% g (P(3HB))/g cell dry weight (CDW) after 51 h, was achieved. The use of the hydrolysate as initial medium resulted in higher CDW (71 g·L−1) than that of the simulated hydrolysate (62 g·L−1 in average), probably because the OFMSW hydrolysate favours biomass growth in detriment of P(3HB) production. Mg/Al-hydrotalcite (HDT)-dispersed paper-structured catalyst (PSC) was prepared by a simple paper-making process. The PSC exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the steam reforming of model biodiesel fuel (BDF), pure oleic acid methyl ester (oleic-FAME, C 19 H 36 O 2 ) which is a mono-unsaturated component of practical BDFs. The PSC exhibited fuel conversion comparable to a pelletized catalyst material, here, conventional Ni–zirconia cermet anode for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with less than one-hundredth Ni weight. Performance of electrolyte-supported cell connected with the PSC was evaluated in the feed of oleic-FAME, and stable operation was achieved. Abstract: This study employed fuel cell gas diffusion layers (GDLs) consisting of carbon fiber paper made from carbon fiber felt with different yard weights in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), and investigated the relationship between the yard weight of the carbon fiber paper and the fuel cell performance and thickness of the gasket. In this paper we discuss the relationship between carbon fiber felt with different yard weights and fuel cell performance and also explore the effect of carbon fiber paper thickness, air permeability, surface resistivity, and structural study. We focused on the material used for the gas diffusion layer in this study. Carbon fiber paper made in-house in this study contained 10wt% (all percentages are by weight unless otherwise noted) phenolic resin. When the tested area was 25cm2, the test temperature was 40°C, the gasket thickness was 0.06mm, and the yard weight 70gm−2, fuel cell current density was 1968mAcm−2 at a load 0.3V. Abstract: This study uses fuel cell gas diffusion layers (GDLs) made from carbon fiber paper containing carbon black in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) in order to determine the relationship between carbon black content and fuel cell performance. The connection between fuel cell performance and the carbon black content of the carbon fiber paper is discussed, and the effects of carbon black on the carbon fiber paper''s thickness, density, and surface resistivity are investigated. When a carbon fiber paper GDL contains 10wt% phenolic resin and 2% carbon black, and reaction area was 25cm2 and operating temperature 40°C, tests show that a carbon electrode fuel cell could achieve 1026.4mAcm−2 and maximum power of 612.8mWcm−2 under a 0.5V load. Abstract: This paper seeks to develop a structure–performance relationship for gas diffusion layers (GDLs) of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), and hence to explain the performance differences between carbon paper (CP) and carbon cloth (CC). Three-dimensional simulations, based on a two-phase model with GDL structural information taken into account, are carried out to explore the fundamentals behind experimentally observed performance differences of the two carbon substrates, i.e. CC and CP, under low- and high-humidity operations. Validation against polarization data is made under both operating conditions, and the results indicate that the CC is the better choice as a GDL material at high-humidity operations due to its low tortuosity of the pore structure and its rough textural surface facilitating droplet detachment. However, under dry conditions, the CP shows better performance due to its more tortuous structure, which prevents the loss of product water to dry gas streams, thus increasing the membrane hydration level and reducing the ohmic loss.
