This conference report summarized a full-day workshop, "best practices for the development and fit-for-purpose validation of biomarker methods," which was held prior to the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) PharmSci360 Congress, San Antonio, TX, November 2019. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together thought leaders in biomarker assay development in order to identify which assay parameters and key statistical measures need to be considered when developing a biomarker assay. A diverse group of more than 40 scientists participated in the workshop. The workshop and subsequent working dinner stimulated robust discussion. While a consensus on best practices was not achieved, some common themes and major points to consider for biomarker assay development have been identified and agreed on. The focus of this conference report is to summarize the presentations and discussions which occurred at the workshop. This article presents information related to the World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR) and its members. WAPOR will be presenting the 2000 Helen Dinerman Award to Robert K. Merton. As a theorist, Merton has identified and clarified a large number of social mechanisms that constitute the present state of sociological knowledge. Several of them are highly relevant to the field of public opinion, for example, the self-fulfilling prophecy. Merton has shown how to relate opinion findings to the history of ideas and to general social theory. He has demonstrated the use of many conceptual tools, for example, reference groups and local and cosmopolitan in interpreting the puzzling variation of public judgments. In late July 2000, the WAPOR Secretariat has been moved to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Gallup Research Center. WAPOR Annual Conference, will be held in Rome, Italy from the 23 to 26 September, 2001. Annual Meeting of the Public Choice Society and Economic Science Association, will be held from 9 to 11 March, 2001 in San Antonio, Texas.
