Information about different papers and posters on "Advanced Technology paths to Global Sustainability," discussed at the 2006 international conference of Renewable Energy in Chiba, Japan, is presented. The symposium focussed on different approaches to reduce emissions, pollution, wastes and the usage of alternative energy sources. The organizers stressed on the usage of renewable energy, which is the only green energy resource on earth.

Professor Lee-Soon Park of Kyungpook National University, Korea, and Professor Tomiki Ikeda of Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, discussed a possibility to have an international symposium on liquid-crystalline materials and devices since Korea and Japan are the leading countries in the field of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and we believed that it would be quite fruitful for the research scientists in the related fields to come together, presenting their the state-of-the-art results, and discuss their results. We agreed to have the first international symposium on Liquid-Crystalline Materials and Devices (LCMD) on April in 1997 at Kyungpook National University at Daegu in Korea, in which the participants were mainly from Korea and Japan. The first international symposium was so successful that we decided to have the second symposium in Japan (LCMD98) in 1998. Since then, we have had international symposiums alternately in Korea and in Japan every year. In 2003, we decided to include other topics related to display materials and devices such as electroluminescence and organic light-emitting diodes, and changed the name of the symposium to “International Symposium on Advanced Display Materials and Devices (ADMD)”. In 2004, we had the ADMD2004 at Himeji in Japan, which Professor Nobuhiro Kawatsuki organized, and had many participants not only from Korea and Japan, but also from USA and China. This volume presents the Proceedings of the ADMD2004 held in Himeji on September 23 and 24, 2004. ADMD2004 was sponsored by the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (S) (No. 16105004) from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) under the auspices of the Japanese Liquid Crystal Society, The Society for information Display, Korea Chapter, The Korean Society of Industrial Engineering Chemistry, Information and Electric Materials Division. We had 101 participants and 46 presentations including 15 oral presentations and 31 poster presentations. The 12th International Meeting on Lithium Batteries, IMLB-12, was held June 27 to July 3, 2004 at the Nara Centennial Hall in Nara, Japan. This meeting, organized by Electrochemical Society, was the 12th edition of the well-established conference series on lithium battery research and technology. Over 700 participants, the largest contingent yet, from academic and industrial laboratories around the world, attended and contributed to the scientific program with the presentation of 429 technical papers. Session breaks in between the oral presentations were held in the poster session area, where attendees had another opportunity to see and peruse posters in addition to the poster session time.

The article presents information on the Congress impressions of a European participant of 9th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Anesthesiology, which was held during September 12-14, 2003 in Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan. Roughly one half of the free papers were case reports and the other half were study reports including experimental results from animal studies such as, characterization of monochrotalin-induced pulmonary hypertension in rats: young rats verses pneumonectomized adult rats'. This article presents information on the Thirld World Congress on Computational Mechanics (WCCM III) to be held in Japan, during August 1-5, 1994. The congress is organized by the International Association for Computational Mechanics. The general form of the WCCM III will follow those of the preceding Congresses. The organizing committee, however, wishes to place emphasis on the following points: an ambitious programme will be planned to cover challenging topics in basic sciences and technologies; a number of best papers will be given awards through recommendation of an international paper reviewing committee; promising young researchers from all over the world will be encouraged to attend the Congress.

The Hungarian Contact Dermatitis Group was established in November 1993. Members of the Managing Board have been elected . The International Contact Dermatitis Research Group wishes to encourage research by endowing a Niels Hjorth Prize. An original, unpublished paper is invited and a committee will select the winner. Ltd. developed a technique that improved the optical damage threshold of polished optical components. Yasuhiko Arakawa from the University of Tokyo observed lasing from a three-dimension photonic crystal. Toshihiko Kiwa of the Okayama University used femtosecond laser pulses to measure potential hydrogen (PH) values.

The 12th International Superconductive Electronics Conference (ISEC 09) was held in June 2009 in Fukuoka, Japan. The conference was very successful, with 253 participants from 17 countries. This special issue is a compendium of selected papers based on the technology presented at that meeting. ISEC has established itself as the leading meeting specializing in superconductor-based electronics and has been organized every two years since 1987. This conference provides an opportunity to present the latest developments in superconductive electronics research, and to interact among the world''s experts with maximal interchange between the various topics. The main theme at ISEC 09 was developments in superconductive devices and electronics systems for advanced sensing, medical, communication and information technologies. Technical topics covered at ISEC 09 include: Digital/mixed signal processing RF electronics SQUIDs and their applications Mixers and detectors Thin film materials, junctions and novel devices. Among the 210 presentations, including plenary, oral and poster, only very high quality presentations have been selected for this special issue. Since the success of the conference depends on many invaluable contributions, I must express my appreciation to many individuals and organizations, in no particular order. The article presents information on the 4th Asian Oceania Epilepsy Organization (AOEO). AOEO was founded at the 25th Annual Congress of the Japan Epilepsy Society (JES) with Dr.M. Seino as the President. The 4th AOEC was held in collaboration with the 36th Annual Congress of the JES from September 11 to 14, 2002 in Karuizawa, Japan. It was an important milestone in the history of development of epileptology and epilepsy care in Asia in terms of the richness of its scientific program and the large number of participants. The scientific program consisted of one special lecture, four symposia, two workshops, eight didactic lectures, the ILAE/IBE/WHO Global Campaign Meeting and 332 free papers.

The 1990 Biennial Conference of the International Association of Oral Pathologists was held in Tokyo, Japan from July 2-5, 1990 under the able direction of pathology researcher Tetsuo Ishiki and his colleagues. Over 500 participants representing 26 countries enjoyed a stimulating meeting which was professionally and socially most rewarding. Several symposia on specific topics were conducted. These included sessions on oral cancer, implants and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. A wide range of individual papers covered the full spectrum of oral pathology and oral medicine.

Information about the 2nd United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization International Expert Meeting on Space Archeology and the Silk Roads, held in Nara, Japan, on November 28-30, 1994 is presented.
