Information about several papers discussed at a symposium of the International Neuro-ophthalmology Society held from November 28 to December 2, 2006 at Zojoji Temple in Tokyo, Japan is presented. Participants of the event discussed about fundamental neurosciences and clinical neuro-opthalmology so that clinicians could provide services for human health and quality of life. Furthermore, Japanese neuro-opthalmology experts presented case studies from different countries.

The article offers information on the Satellite Symposium themed "Nurture Medical Care in Uonuma" held in Uonuma, Japan on October 11, 2012. Topics discussed include challenges of health and social care professionals in providing better health, establishment of a community-based comprehensive care in Nagaoka, Japan, and community-based health and social care at Aga-machi, Japan. The symposium featured community care professionals including Katsuya Fuse, Tsuyoshi Koyama and Fumitoshi Yoshimine.

Abstract: Held on 21st to 23rd November 2009 in Hiroshima, the SiHIS working conference aimed at finding solutions to approach to an idealistic society where (1) the individual can trust information with full understanding and responsibility, (2) the individual can allow the use of information backed by sound legitimated environment, (3) information can play its role for better healthcare and the improvement of medicine. The article presents information on the 4th Asian Oceania Epilepsy Organization (AOEO). AOEO was founded at the 25th Annual Congress of the Japan Epilepsy Society (JES) with Dr.M. Seino as the President. The 4th AOEC was held in collaboration with the 36th Annual Congress of the JES from September 11 to 14, 2002 in Karuizawa, Japan. It was an important milestone in the history of development of epileptology and epilepsy care in Asia in terms of the richness of its scientific program and the large number of participants. The scientific program consisted of one special lecture, four symposia, two workshops, eight didactic lectures, the ILAE/IBE/WHO Global Campaign Meeting and 332 free papers.

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has announced that "The nurse as an instrument of change" will be the theme for International Nurses Day 1977. May 12 is usually the date on which International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world, since this is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale. The East West Academy of Healing Arts (EWAHA) Council of Nurse Healers, leaders in a nationwide effort to promote the re-emergence of humanism and caring in nursing, will sponsor the First Congress of Nurse-Healers in San Francisco on 10-12 June 1977 on the theme "The Nurse-Healer of Tomorrow: A Futuristic View." The Congress will be followed by a three day intensive workshop on a wide variety of holistic health practices which will be led by fifteen nationally known leaders in the field. The International Association for Psychotronic Research has arranged for the third international congress to be held in Keidanren Kaikan, Tokyo, Japan, from 27 June to 1 July 1977.

A calendar of international events for the nursing profession from March 23 to October 1, 2007 is presented. The annual research conference of the Midwest Nursing Research Society 2007 will be held in Omaha, Nebraska. It will be in Yokohama, Japan that the International Council of Nurses International Conference will take place. A convention focusing on evidence-based practice will be emphasized in Vienna, Austria.

Rapid aging of the population necessitates improved collaboration among healthcare professionals. Unfortunately, interprofessional collaboration has yet to be implemented effectively in Japan. Therefore, we aimed to develop an interprofessional competency framework for Japanese healthcare professionals. The project was conducted as a four-step process, starting with initial categorization of potential competency domains, followed by guiding principle and prototype development, feedback on the prototype, and final consensus. First, authors (JH and MO) collected opinions about competency in interprofessional collaboration at two academic meetings of the Japan Association for Interprofessional Education (JAIPE) and then analyzed the data thematically. Second, a project team consisting of JAIPE and University representatives extracted the domains and statements as prototype 1. Third, seven representatives from professional organizations joined the project team and developed prototype 2. We then called for feedback on the revised prototype 2 at both an open symposium and via public comments. Following revision of prototype 2, a new project team including 20 university, professional organization and health practitioner representatives finally discussed prototype 3, developed the final draft and reached a consensus. In analysis after collecting the data, we extracted 11 themes. We developed four key principles which applied to six domains as prototype 1-3. Finally, our competency framework included two core domains of “Patient-/client-/family-/community-centered” and “Interprofessional communication”, and four peripheral domains of “Role contribution”, “Facilitation of relationships”, “Reflection” and “Understanding of others”. We developed an interprofessional competency framework in Japan which consists of two core and four peripheral domains. The interprofessional competency framework is likely to affect the understanding of “high-context” and “relationalism” in Japanese healthcare. We hope that our interprofessional competency framework will encourage the systematic implementation of interprofessional education and collaboration in Japan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
