This paper is a description and sociological analysis of the 20th anniversary events across Central and Eastern Europe to commemorate the pivotal year of 1989--the fall of the Berlin Wall and the sudden break from communist regimes. Based on a first-hand comparative ethnography during the fall of 2009, the paper chronicles and analyzes the publicly presented meanings of 1989 for the seven countries that once comprised the Eastern Bloc. This paper focuses on the key ephemeral events: commemorative marches, speeches, performances, and ceremonies, and draws comparisons across the cases to assess the meanings that the countries give to 1989, the memories of their own dissident (social movement) activities that contributed to the changes, and the influence of 1989 on the realities of the present day.
