Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the Quebec pulp and paper industry fell by more than 30 percent from 1990 to 2006. We use an energy demand model to analyze the contributions to this decrease of energy prices, product mix, technological change, and biomass use. The product mix is made of pulp, and cardboard, and paper. Pulp is an intermediate product for the industry, but not necessarily so for mills; vertical integration varies across mills and presents different opportunities to transfer heat between stages of production. Chemical and mechanical pulping processes are used to form two groups of pulp and paper mills. We find that changes of product mixes contributed the most to reduce GHG emissions, followed to a lesser extent by increases of fuel prices relative to electricity. The estimated electricity and fuel price elasticities are low. However it is still possible to significantly reduce GHG emissions by substituting natural gas for heavy fuel oil; such a substitution could be brought about by a small change of their relative price. The editor reflects on the special issue of the periodical which is based on the 2012 International Microwave Symposium held on June 17-22, 2012 in Montreal, Quebec. He mentions that due to increased number of submissions to the special issue, it has been divided into two issues the first one was published in December 2012, and the next one in January 2013. He adds that the aim behind including conference papers in the issue is to present results that might help improve engineering designs.

1. In minesoil reclamation, the establishment of a sustainable plant cover requires the improvement of limiting conditions and the re-initiation of carbon (C) and nutrient cycling. 2. The approach used in this study for reclaiming an abandoned sandpit in Quebec, Canada, was based on a heavy organic amendment as an attempt to accelerate the reconstruction of a functional ecosystem. 3. The one-time intervention consisted of incorporating paper de-inking sludge into soil at two rates (0 and 105 dry t ha–1 ), supplemented with nitrogen (N) at three rates (3, 6 and 9 g kg–1 sludge) and phosphorus (P) at two rates (0·5 and 1·0 g kg–1 sludge) followed by seeding (mid-summer) of Agropyron elongatum (Host) Beauv. (tall wheatgrass). 4. Standing biomass increased in the presence of sludge after both the first and second full growing seasons. High N application rates further increased yield, more importantly in the second season. The high P rate improved grass establishment in all cases. Ground cover increased with time and doubled in the presence of sludge whereas it declined in the absence of sludge. Phosphorus and N uptake was improved consistently in the presence of sludge. 5. Sludge application resulted in improved water retention and cation exchange capacities, and an increase in pH and bulk density of sandpit minesoil, all of which may have accounted for the significant improvement in plant responses. Levels of soil C and N suggest that this reconstructed system is approaching sustainability. 6. Adequate N and P supplements will accentuate the positive influence of sludge on revegetation. The practitioner-patient interview has been the subject of several studies in the world of medicine and in the field of teaching languages for specific purposes It has been considered one of the most critical oral genres in language teaching for medical-health purposes. Every health professional has to know and understand why the patient has come for a consultation; they must have the necessary skills to obtain as much information about the patient's health problem as possible, and if necessary, they have to perform a physical examination. The practitioner-patient interview is divided into several steps. Each step consists of a specific task with its specific objectives for the practitioner. For about fifteen years, the French Language Centre of McGill University, an English-speaking university in Montreal, Canada, has been offering French courses to students specializing in different areas of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Social Work who wish to do their clinical placements and pursue their professional career in the province of Quebec. Most of McGill’s students are native English speakers from different parts of Canada and the United States or international students whose first language is not necessarily English. One of the most important oral genres which must be taught to these students is the practitioner-patient interview in French, since one of their principal tasks as healthcare professionals will to interact with patients. Furthermore, students who have obtained a degree in any healthcare profession from an English-speaking university in the French-speaking province of Quebec must take a French language exam offered by the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF). In one of the activities of this exam, the candidates must interview a patient or a caregiver in French. Therefore, this constitutes another reason to teach the practitioner-patient interview to our students. Unfortunately, there is little extant literature on how to teach students to carry out a practitioner-patient interview in French as a second language. Moreover, the possibility of recording actual interviews for use in class is practically impossible to respect patient confidentiality. This paper aims to share with the scientific community and with other language for specific purposes instructors how the practitioner-patient interview is taught at McGill University to non-native French speakers who wish to work in Quebec. Clinical implementation of pharmacogenetics (PGx) into routine care will elevate the current paradigm of treatment decisions. However, while PGx tests are increasingly becoming reliable and affordable, several barriers have limited their widespread usage in Canada. Globally, over ninety successful PGx implementors can serve as models. The purpose of this paper is to outline the PGx implementation barriers documented in Quebec (Canada) to suggest efficient solutions based on existing PGx clinics and propose an adapted clinical implementation model. The article illustrates how Italian astronomer Ermanno Borra initiated the creation of an infrared-spectrum telescope on the moon. Borra and his colleagues from Laval University in Quebec City, Quebec revived the idea of a liquid-mirror telescope (LMT). A lunar LMT needed to be very cold and a highly reflective liquid. Borra and a graduate student added metal coatings to thick and syrupy liquids. However, it was ionic liquids that provided the breakthrough for their team.

Introduction: Responsive, integrated and sustainable health systems require that communities take an active role in service design and delivery. Much of the current literature focuses on provider‐led initiatives to gain community input, raising concerns about power imbalances inherent in invited forms of participation. This paper provides an alternate view, exploring how, in a period following reforms, community actors forge network alliances to (re)gain legitimacy and capacities to coproduce health services with system providers. Methods: A longitudinal case study traced the network‐building efforts over 3 years of a working group formed by citizens and community actors working with seniors, minorities, recent immigrants, youth and people with disabilities. The group came together over concerns about reforms that impacted access to health services and the ability of community groups to mediate access for vulnerable community residents. Data were collected from observation of the group's meetings and activities, documents circulated within and by the group, and semi‐directed interviews. The first stage of analysis used social network mapping to reveal the network development achieved by the working group; a second traced network maturation, based on actor–network theory. Results: Network mapping revealed how the working group mobilized existing links and created new links with health system actors to explore access issues. Problematization appeared as an especially important stage in network development in the context of reforms that disrupted existing collaborative relationships and introduced new structures and processes. Conclusion: Network‐building strategies enable community actors to enhance their capacity for coproduction. A key contribution lies in the creation of 'organizational infrastructure'. Surface water pCO2 and pCH4 measurements were made in Québec (Canada) during consecutive seasons from 2006 to 2008 in two boreal reservoirs and nearby lakes. The goal of this follow-up was to evaluate greenhouse gas emissions from the water bodies studied, through flux calculations using the Thin Boundary Layer Model. Our measurements underscored the winter CO2 accumulation due to ice cover and the importance of a reliable estimation of spring diffusive emissions as the ice breaks up. We clearly demonstrated that in our systems, CH4 diffusive fluxes (in terms of CO2 equivalent) were of minor importance in the GHG emissions, with CO2 diffusive fluxes generally representing more than 95% of the annual diffusive fluxes. Genetic counseling is a fast-growing profession worldwide, with genetic counselors taking on increasingly comprehensive and autonomous roles in the healthcare sector. However, the absence of appropriate legal frameworks could potentially create risks of harm to the public. Legal recognition serves to protect the public from risk of harm by regulating the safe and competent practice of healthcare professionals. Genetic counseling is not legally recognized in most world jurisdictions. Examination of the legal status of genetic counseling in different jurisdictions and whether existing legal mechanisms are adequate to address potential risks of harm is therefore timely. This paper examines the different roles of genetic counselors in the Canadian province of Quebec and the state of Qatar, the authors’ respective jurisdictions. It considers the types of harms that may be created where appropriate legal mechanisms are lacking, considering the socio-political and legal differences between the two jurisdictions. Moreover, it examines the legal status of genetic counseling in Quebec and Qatar to determine whether these statuses appropriately address the identified risks of harm. The authors argue that existing legal frameworks are inadequate to address these risks and recommend that additional regulatory mechanisms be implemented to properly protect the public from risks of harm. Introduction/Purpose: Clubfoot is a common disorder among newborns which impedes the patient's ability to walk normally if left untreated. There exists a debate on the most effective way to treat clubfoot; surgical methods, such as the posteromedial release and percutaneous achilles tenotomy, are preferred by some surgeons, while non-operative methods, including the Ponseti and French methods, are favored by others. One technique that has recently gained traction in the assessment of clubfoot treatment is gait analysis, which uses motion-capture technology to record several parameters of movement in patients with clubfoot to assess their function compared to healthy controls. In this study, we aim to analyze existing literature on motioncapture data to compare ankle power and walking speed in clubfoot patients who were treated operatively and non-operatively. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted of PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Cochrane publications to identify all available literature on clubfoot. Using PRISMA guidelines and a string of MeSH terms, all available articles on clubfoot were identified. The literature was then screened so that only articles containing more than three human subjects on pediatric patients with detailed gait analysis outcomes were selected. Initially, 26 papers on gait analysis were included, from which nine were excluded due to repeated papers and those on patients with secondary clubfoot. From the remaining papers, 11 had relevant outcome measures which were extracted including patient number, age, ankle power, and walking speed. All steps of screening were screened so that two authors independently verified that each paper met criteria for inclusion. Results: Initial search revealed 6469 articles. After review, 11 remained. Average age of surgical patients was 8.35, and the average age was 5.5 for non-surgical patients. In surgically treated clubfeet, the average ankle power was 1.591 W/kg (stdev = 0.702W/kg). In non-surgically treated clubfeet, the average ankle power was 2.334 W/kg (stdev = 0.792W/kg). Analysis via t-test revealed no significant difference between ankle power in surgically treated and non-surgically treated clubfeet (p = .125). When assessing walking speed, the average among surgically treated clubfeet was 0.721m/s (stdev = 0.136m/s), whereas in nonoperatively treated clubfeet, the average was 0.99m/s (stdev = 0.212m/s). This difference was not statistically significant (t-test, p=0.072). Conclusion: This systematic review of motion-capture data revealed that there is no significant difference in ankle power or walking speed between surgically treated and non-surgically treated clubfeet. This may have been affected by the age difference between the cohorts. The need for further research in this area is evident due to the low volume of material on gait analysis despite the detailed metrics provided by this method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction/Purpose: Lisfranc injuries range from sprains to fracture-dislocations of the tarsometatarsal joints which include injury to the Lisfranc ligament complex. Most require surgical intervention. However, apparently stable injuries can be managed nonoperatively. The aims of the current study were to perform a systematic review of outcomes following nonoperative treatment of Lisfranc injuries. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines and PROSPERO registered, a review was performed of the literature (2000 - 2021) reporting Lisfranc injuries considered to be stable and initially managed nonoperatively. Following exclusions, 8 papers were identified; 1 prospective and 7 retrospective studies. A total of 220 patients were studied with a mean age of 39.8 years and mean follow up of 4.3 years. Outcomes included function, displacement, rates of surgery and secondary osteoarthritis. Results: Four papers reported good outcomes, with adjusted functional scores ranging from of 82.6 to 100 (out of 100). However, poor outcomes were frequently reported. One paper reported that late displacement occurred in 54% of patients. Surgical intervention was required in 12.2 to 55.6% of patients. Rates of secondary osteoarthritis were 4.9 to 37.5%. Two papers directly compared operative to non-operative treatment. In an injury matched cohort, superior outcomes were reported in the surgical arm. Numerous limitations were identified, including a lack of consensus on what constitutes a stable injury. Furthermore, wide heterogeneity was identified due to use of different classification systems, PROMS, investigation modalities and treatment protocols. Conclusion: Reported outcomes following nonoperative treatment of Lisfranc injuries vary widely, including high rates of conversion to surgery. There is no agreed definition of what a stable Lisfranc injury is, and no agreed treatment protocol. With the advantage of modern imaging techniques, prospective research is needed to determine which Lisfranc injuries can be safely treated nonoperatively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The shortage of public service workers in northern Indigenous communities presents a twofold problem: how to rapidly hire professionals, often nonindigenous people from the South, and how to ensure that their integration overcomes systemic racism. This paper examines mechanisms that could provide better relationships between nonindigenous people from the South and Innu and Naskapi communities of Quebec's North Shore, especially in the workplace. Interviews were conducted with key figures in the education, health, and social services sectors to shed light on the dynamics of awareness, formation, integration, and retention at the individual, workplace, community, territory, and regional levels. The results highlight the importance of the processes of openness to the northern and Indigenous realities (northernization and indigenization) as an overall way of improving intercultural relationships in Indigenous working places. The fifty-sixth annual conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) was held at the Hilton Montreal Bonaventure in Montreal, Quebec on May 17 to 20, 2001. The conference theme was Making Connections. Some eight hundred public opinion researchers accepted the invitation to meet colleagues and friends and to participate in the interdisciplinary program. The special character of the annual conference clearly distinguishes it from other professional meetings. Despite steady growth in attendance over recent years, it is a relatively small conference. Its limited duration, its submission review process and its carefully variegated slate of paper session topics constrain the number of opportunities for being on the program. With the traditional meals and social events, the AAPOR conference presents a higher quality, more intimate and more interdisciplinary experience than can be found at many academic, governmental, or commercial meetings. The structure of the meeting limits, among other things, opportunities to attract new AAPOR members, the willingness of exhibitors and publishers to display their wares, the range of topics covered in the program and the conference revenue that AAPOR could employ for worthwhile purposes.

The first wave of SARS-CoV-2 has deeply affected long term care facilities in the province of Quebec. In response, governmental officials took protective measures, such as suspending visits and activities and even requiring residents to self-isolate to their room. Consequently, residents with major cognitive impairments were cut from their routine as well as from significant social interactions, support, and stimulation essential to their well-being. This isolation negatively affected many residents. For some of them, the loss of bearings resulted in newly or deteriorated behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). These residents were then more at risk of contracting the virus or contaminating others. To face this challenge, hotels in the Greater Montreal area were transformed into temporary care facilities. As members of a multidisciplinary team specialized in the management of BPSD, we were asked to support the redeployed staff who had little experience in this domain. In this paper, we present the innovative tools implemented in this uncommon work setting. We also discuss factors identified as facilitating the care and treatment of people with BPSD. INTRODUCTION This exploratory cross-sectional study focuses on the experiences of mothers regarding health messages promoting breastfeeding. The objective is to describe the content and context in which messages are conveyed. METHODS A total of 944 new mothers responded to a questionnaire (15-31 January 2021) on their perception of health messages promoting breastfeeding and their feeling of agreement towards these messages, their intention to breastfeed, incentives received, and their relationship with the professionals. Frequencies were carried out for all non-textual data and textual data were analyzed using content thematic analysis. The recruitment was made through social media and snowball effect. RESULTS Most of the respondents reported wanting to breastfeed; 91% breastfed their child, 80.8% participants agreed with the messages they received, and 67.9% of respondents strongly agreeing that breastfeeding was the best choice for their child. Moreover, the content of the messages could sometimes be judgmental and coercive, leading to emotions such as guilt. Sixty-two women also reported a lack of support when they expressed their desire or their need to feed their baby in other ways (e.g. breastmilk with bottles or formulas). CONCLUSIONS The perceived issue of breastfeeding messages was not the content itself, but the way in which information was conveyed. Failure to take mothers' difficulties into account and failure to present alternatives to breastfeeding were seen as major issues by women. This study highlights the importance of rethinking the way in which information is provided by professionals, in order to reinforce the autonomy of new mothers regarding the feeding of their child. The IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (IEEE MTT-S) International Microwave Symposium (IMS) was held in Montreal, QC, Canada, on June 17?22, 2012, and the conference Chair introduced several exciting ideas to stimulate paper submissions to the conference. First, the conference committee made a determined effort to increase publicity, especially in Asia. Second, and definitely more controversial, they reduced the paper length from the traditional four pages to three pages. The thought behind this was that it would make it easier for authors to write a journal paper based on the conference paper because the conference paper would not contain as much technical information. Thus, the authors would have an easier time meeting the IEEE MTT-S threshold that every paper, whether conference or journal, must present substantially new technical material. There were a record number of submissions to the IEEE MTT-S IMS, and there were a record number of submissions to this TRANSACTIONS' "Special Issue on the 2012 International Microwave Symposium." In fact, there were too many submissions for the reviewers, the Associate Editors, and me to complete all of the papers before the deadline for the December issue. Therefore, I have divided the IEEE MTT-S IMS "Special Issue on the 2012 International Microwave Symposium" into two parts, which will be published in this TRANSACTIONS' December 2012 and January 2013 issues. In the January 2013 Special Issue, the Editor-in-Chief will write a full editorial detailing the number of papers, the acceptance rate, and my opinion on the success or failure of the three-page experiment. Urban ecology is a promising research field in limnology, but we still need to evaluate how urban waterbodies can sustain biodiversity. In this paper, we present a comprehensive foodweb perspective of urban waterbodies in the city of Montréal (Québec, Canada). The research goals are to evaluate if biodiversity and community structure of foodweb components (phytoplankton, zooplankton, and macroinvertebrates) are valuable tools for assessing the ecological status of urban waterbodies and examine how they are controlled by multiple factors related to trophic status and habitat complexity (origin, water residence, macrophyte cover, fish, and management practices). Multiple factor analysis, correlations, and non-parametric tests were used to examine the relationships between the environmental factors and foodweb biological variables. Our case study confirms that urban waterbodies are important sources of biodiversity and reveals that foodweb-based biological indicators are reliable tools for the biomonitoring of urban waterbodies. Foodweb biodiversity and community structure were more influenced by habitat complexity than by trophic status. The key determinants of variation were the differences in water regime, management of temporary and permanent waterbodies, and contrasts in habitat complexity depending on pond origin (artificial or natural) and macrophyte cover. Introduction/Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of 1st MTP motion preserving hallux valgus surgery using Patient Reported Outcomes (PROMs) in the literature since 2001. This paper also tries to eliminate some of the heterogeneity in reporting by using the effect size of the treatment using Minimally Important Clinical Differences (MCIDs). Methods: For this systematic review, we searched for peer-reviewed English-language articles published in 2001 or later, using the electronic databases Medline, Embase, SCOPUS, PEDro, CINAHL, Global Index Medicus, Web of Science, and World Wide Science. There were a total of 5,544 articles published on bunions. We reviewed all the abstracts and 1,200 papers were selected for full text evaluation. Finally, we analyzed 310 of the articles for this review. In total, there were 21,109 patients in 401 cohorts that underwent surgery on a total of 24,231 feet. Results: Our primary endpoint was patient reported outcomes measures (PROMs) and was stratified based on location of the osteotomy on the metatarsal shaft as well as follow up time. AOFAS was the most common PROM used and was included in 83.5% of the articles. We found that double osteotomies had the greatest overall change score in PROMs with an overall mean improvement of 1.69 MCIDs (CI +/- 0.7), compared to 1.23 (CI +/-0.46) for distal osteotomies; shaft and proximal osteotomies were similar to the distal subgroup. Although it had the highest positive change, double osteotomies were associated with the highest complication rates of recurrence (11.2%), malunion (4.8%), and avascular necrosis (3.2%). Minimally invasive vs open techniques had similar changes in HVA, IMA, and PROMs. There was a slightly higher satisfaction rate in the Open group at 91.6% vs 89.6% in the MIS group. Conclusion: Bony correction of bunions demonstrated a clinically significant improvement in patient reported outcomes with an aggregate MCID between 1.26-1.69. They performed significantly better than soft tissue procedures +/- proximal phalanx osteotomy. Although double osteotomy did perform better than the other bony osteotomies it did have a higher complication rate and the group was a much smaller cohort which makes it more susceptible to bias. MIS vs Open bunion correction demonstrated similar correction and AOFAS scores, the satisfaction rate was about 2% higher in open which was statistically significant but may not have clinical significance [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on an analysis of the editorial peritexts of the 'Police-Journal' (P-J) series, the present paper seeks to understand the marketing strategies used to sell dime novels, deployed by the most important popular publisher in Quebec. In the first section, we show how P-J attempted to present itself as "the best in the business." It constantly heralded its success and extolled the global quality of its publications. In the second section, we demonstrate how the publication of separate series did not stop P-J from trying to attract readers to its entire catalog. The third section analyses how P-J navigated the troubled waters of a French-Canadian society torn between the more emancipated aspirations of an increasingly urbanized population and its elites' conservative ideology. P-J had to offer a product that was exciting enough to appeal to the crowd, yet sufficiently innocuous to avoid censorship. Breast cancer treatment can affect estrogen levels leading to significant bone loss, osteoporosis, and risks for fracture. Although bone care guidelines are published, bone health interventions are often not routinely offered to at-risk individuals. This paper reports on the process of developing and implementing a nurse-led bilingual Breast and Bone Health Program (BBHP) in-person and online at a cancer centre in Montreal, Quebec (www.breastandbonehealth. ca, www.santeseinsetos.ca). The BBHP offers tailored bone health interventions (e.g., risk screening, information, rehabilitation, exercise prescriptions, nutritional counselling, and support for a health-promoting lifestyle). Over a two-year period, women treated for breast cancer (N = 430) took part in the program. Forty percent of surveyed participants (n = 97) initially reported being unaware that some breast cancer treatment could significantly affect bone health. Following the initial informational session with the BBHP nurse, self-reported bone health knowledge significantly increased, with 96% reporting sufficient information to manage their bone health. The BBHP offers both online and in-person risk assessment and bone health promotion activities and tools to both health care professionals and women with breast cancer. Introduction: Regular physical activity (PA) can be beneficial to breast cancer survivors, although the majority do not devote sufficient time to the practice. The long-term side effects of cancer treatment represent barriers to adopting healthy lifestyle habits. Goal: Identify factors that influence the intention to practise regular PA among breast cancer survivors. Methodology: A correlational study was conducted among my Active Health (Ma Santé Active) program participants (N = 136), using a self-administered questionnaire based on the theory of planned behaviour. Findings: Multiple regression analysis shows that attitude, perceived control, behavioural beliefs and control beliefs are the determinants of intention. Discussion and conclusion: It is recommended to design interventions based on these determinants to strengthen the behavioural intention of breast cancer survivors. The paper will also inform healthcare professionals about the intervention targets to be utilized to motivate women with a breast cancer diagnosis to engage in regular PA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The digitalization of industries is at the heart of today's global economy. However, there seems to be confusion about the most effective methods for initiating this transformation, and even more so for the manufacturing Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME). In a context of labor shortages, globalization and access to goods, services and skills everywhere and at any time thanks to the Internet, the need to stand out from the competition becomes a crucial issue. This research attempts to evaluate and identify the most effective ways to facilitate the digitalization in a context of manufacturing SMEs. Thanks to the measure of the digital performance and an 80-hour experience-based methodology using a questionnaire and field interviews, the determining factors of influence of the digital transformation could be raised. This paper uses a model of digital performance and hypothesis testing to try to identify the business practices and the 4.0 technologies that have the greatest effect on the performance of manufacturing SMEs. June 8th, 2016 ended the lives of both Christiane Vadnais and Lucifer, but it also unraveled many other relations between humans and pitbull-type dogs. In this paper, I explore what it meant to conduct multispecies ethnography in the context of Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) in the city of Montréal between 2016-2018. I detail how methodologies of participant observation, walking interviews, and autoethnography explored themes of care, ethics, solidarity, and intervention. In the first section, I describe who I am engaging with when I say 'pitbull-type dog'. It is here I define what I call contested companionship. Next, I turn to my fieldwork detailing three research methods. I first describe participant observation and rapport building at Tails and Paws Montréal, a dog care facility, and introduce Rocky, a pitbull-type dog that had to evacuate the province of Québec. Next, I outline the benefit of walking interviews for multispecies research. I conclude my reflection on methodological practices by drawing from auto-ethnographic data outlining my shared life with Clementine and Eleanor. In the third section, I consider questions of intervention in the field that were deeply tethered to matters of life and death for both human and nonhuman participants, in particular for Fred and his companions Marilyn and Samson. Scaffolded together, I provide an example of what an ethically informed multispecies research design looked like that additionally had to navigate contested companionship -illegal or precarious--that shaped methodological practices into politically productive strategies that safeguarded not only individuals but relationships. This paper shows that the quest for sovereignty in Quebec is explained by its role as the abode for a French-speaking minority in North America. It notes that there was no commonly agreed legal framework for the 1980 or 1995 referendums and that the attempt to impose one in 2000 has been rejected by Quebec. Using results from existing papers and original research, the paper shows that the quest for sovereignty can have an impact on the cost of financing the public debt of the entity doing this. It also shows that labour flows can be affected by the existence of a sovereignty movement. This GDP would be higher if the secessionist threat had not had an impact on the size of the labour force since the early 1970s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Leakage of water distribution networks is the most common reason of undesirable losses of potable water. Problems associated with water main leaks pose growing concern around the globe. These problems include water and energy loss, in addition to the risk it poses to structural damage of adjacent properties. In current practice, not all water leaks can be detected in a timely and cost effective manner. This paper presents a study conducted for detection of water leaks in underground pipelines, and identification of their respective locations using thermography infrared camera. The paper describes the field work and the experimental protocol which were carried out over 2 years in three different locations in greater Montréal (Canada) area in order to investigate factors that affect the applicability and limitations of using IR camera in water leak detection. These factors beyond those studied in previous work carried out by American Water Works Association and National Research Council. The paper presents a model developed to determine approximate location of leaks in water mains. The developed model was then applied successfully to detect and locate leaks in water mains in fall and spring seasons. It failed, however, to detect leaks in the summer and winter due to high pavement temperature and the snow coverage, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction/Purpose: Total talus replacements have been proposed as a method to treat talar AVN replacing the entire talus. The potential for total talar replacements has increased with the advent of patient specific implants utilising 3D printing based on CT scanning of the ipsilateral or contralateral talus. The primary aim of this systematic review is to analyse the current literature on total talus replacements. It specifically aims to look at the indications, complications, survival and functional outcomes. Methods: A systematic review was undertaken including all levels of evidence and following PRISMA guidelines. Basic percentages and a weighted pooled proportion for failures using the Freeman Tukey double arscine transformation were performed. Results: 9 papers with 151 patients were included. The mean age ranged from 27.6 to 72, with 5 papers having a mean age of less than 50. Mean follow-up ranged from 12.8 to 58 months. The most common indication was avascular necrosis in 103 patients.4 studies used 3D printing and 5 customised implants. 3 studies undertook a talus replacement with an ankle replacement. 4 studies used ceramic prostheses, 3 cobalt chromium 1 stainless steel and 1 titanium with ceramic surface. Post-operative complications ranged from 0 to 33%. 69.6% of 23 functional outcomes scores demonstrated significant improvement in functional scores with the others demonstrating a non-significant improvement.3 of 151 implants failed requiring further surgery with 2 revisions and 1 amputation. 6 of the 8 studies did not report any operations for failure. The cumulative incidence of failure was 0.1 % (95% CI 0.0- 4.9%). Conclusion: Total talus replacements are a potential alternative to tibiotalocalcaneal fusion for patients with avascular necrosis of the talus. Further studies are required to ensure good outcomes prior to an increase in use of this prosthesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction/Purpose: A supramalleolar osteotomy is a joint-sparing procedure that can change the mechanical axis load on the ankle joint in the coronal-sagittal planes. Restoration of the axial alignment allows for redistribution of loads to the less affected area of articular cartilage, slowing down or even stopping further articular degeneration. It has been reported that supramalleolar osteotomy has a useful effect in asymmetric varus ankle and medial compartment osteoarthritis, but as far as we know there are not many papers conducted in one center for large cases based study. In our paper, we analyzed the results of multiple cases (67 cases) of supramalleolar osteotomy surgical procedure performed in our center and make insight about prognostic factors like high talar tilt and takakura stage. Methods: From August 2007 to May 2020, a retrospective study was conducted on 67 ankles which underwent distal tibio-fibular osteotomy due to medial compartment osteoarthritis and asymmetric varus ankle in our center. The articular cartilage was evaluated simultaneously with the distal tibio-fibular osteotomy through arthroscopy exam intraoperatively. The mean age was 58.6 years(range 37-73 years). American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score, Visual analog scale (Vas) pain score, Range of motion (ROM) and patient satisfaction were used for functional evaluations. Ankle osteoarthritis was classified by Takakura stage, and the tibial anterior surface angle (TAS), tibial lateral surface angle (TLS) and talar tilt angle were measured for radiological evaluations. And, groups were divided according to the Takakura stage, and whether there were significant differences in the measured values was compared. Results: When Preop IIIB and Preop II, IIIA groups were compared, last fu AOFAS score and Pain vas score showed no significant difference. Talar tilt angle showed significant higher value in Preop IIIB group(p<0.05). And TAS angle showed bigger correction in Preop IIIB group with borderline difference. (p=0.07) It seems that overcorrected TAS angle came out to maximize the effect of load transfer to laterally intra-operatively. And it is thought that the overcorrected TAS angle had a good effect on the clinical outcome. When Preop IIIB group were divided stage improved group with not improved group and compared each other, last fu AOFAS score and ROM showed worse results in Postop IIIB group significantly. (p<0.05) Talar tilt showed higher value in Postop IIIB group on preop with borderline differences.(p=0.06) TAS angle showed no significant differences.(p=0.58) Conclusion: We performed SMO for stage IIIB medial ankle OA with significant TAS overcorrection, and achieved favorable clinical outcomes (AOFAS 85.1) when compared with preop stage IIIA group (AOFAS 85.6). Postop stage IIIB group showed higher preop talar tilt angles with poor AOFAS score when compared with postop takakura stage improved group (10.7 and 7.6). Many preop IIIB cases are found to be good candidate for SMO, but skillful selection for SMO is required for good results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
