Introduction We developed low-cost, portable paper-based diagnostic devices for detection of human immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) in serum without any sample preparation. These devices can be used to help identify presence of diseases, used to provide rapid results ( Materials and Methods We successfully accomplished colorimetric detection of human IgG and human IgM using a sandwich-style assay within the microfluidic paper device via vertical flow immunoassay configuration. The reaction zone in the wax printed paper layer is a small circular pattern. Gold nanoparticles conjugated with anti-human IgG and IgM antibodies have been used for colorimetric detection of IgG or IgM by naked eye. Colorimetric signal can be precisely quantified through implementation of image analysis software which can be developed as an app for a smartphone. The size of the device is 2 cm × 2 cm × 1 mm. Results Colorimetric detection of human IgG was accomplished at 100 fg/mL concentration using a gold nanoparticle–conjugated anti-human IgG antibody. The developed platform has a dynamic range of IgM and IgG concentrations between 0.1 pg/mL and 100 μg/mL. These devices provided a color readout in Conclusions Because of the inherent simplicity of the device operation and their ease of use, there is no variation between samples and users of the device. This low-cost approach enables multiplexing with >1 measurement performed in parallel at the same time. We anticipate that because of the sensitivity, specificity, ease of use, and overall reliability, this approach will become a standard for diagnosis of diseases and health conditions.

BackgroundAntimicrobial surveillance and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) are essential pillars in the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR), but practical guidance on how surveillance data should be linked to AMS activities is lacking. This issue is particularly complex in the hospital setting due to structural heterogeneity of hospital facilities and services. The JPIAMR ARCH and COMBACTE-MAGNET EPI-Net networks have joined efforts to formulate a set of target actions for linking surveillance data with AMS activities.MethodsA scoping review of the literature was carried out addressing research questions on three areas: (i) AMS leadership and accountability; (ii) antimicrobial usage and AMS; (iii) AMR and AMS. Consensus on the target actions was reached through a RAND-modified Delphi process involving over 40 experts in different fields from 18 countries.ResultsEvidence was retrieved from 51 documents. Initially 38 targets were proposed, differentiated as essential or desirable according to clinical relevance, feasibility and applicability to settings and resources. In the first consultation round, preliminary agreement was reached for 32 targets. Following a second consultation, 27 targets were approved, 11 were deleted and 4 were suggested for rephrasing, leading to a final approved list of 34 target actions in the form of a practical checklist.ConclusionsThis White Paper provides a pragmatic and flexible tool to guide the development of calibrated hospital-surveillance-based AMS interventions. The strength of this tool is that it is a comprehensive perspective that takes into account the hospital patient case-mix and the related epidemiology, which ultimately drives antimicrobial usage, and the feasibility in low-resource settings.

This work describes the log-MAP (BCJR) algorithm implementation of a close to capacity dirty paper coding CODEC. The CODEC consists of eight deep pipeline processors. It decodes blocks of 975 bits in 26.9 ms using less than 9.7% of low-cost FPGA (and no DSP blocks). Two pipelines, for alpha and beta, calculate the values of gamma (of the BCJR) to reduce the storage requirements. The final log-likelihood ratio (LLR) is calculated together with alpha, reusing intermediate results. The number of bits used by the different signals of the processor is easily configurable. It was set to six bits to the channel measure signals and eight bits to log of probability signals like alpha, beta, and others. The CODEC clock was 100 MHz. The achieved bit rate is 36.2 Kbps per CODEC, but multiple CODECs can be fit into a single chip. The CODEC is 3.49 dB from the channel capacity.

Bacillus cereus is one of the most common foodborne pathogens found in various kinds of staple foods such as rice and wheat. A rapid and accurate detection method for this pathogen is highly desirable for the sustainable production of relevant food products. While several classical and molecular-based detection methods are available for the identification of B. cereus, they suffered one or more limitations such as the requirement for a tedious and time-consuming process, less than ideal specificity, and the lack of portability. Herein, we developed the first paper-based sensing device that exhibits high species specificity with sufficiently low limit of detection for the visual detection of specific DNA sequences of B. cereus. The success is attributed to the strategic planning of fabrication in various dimensions including thorough bioinformatics search for highly specific genes, the use of the pyrrolidinyl peptide nucleic acid (PNA) probe whose selectivity advantage is well documented, and an effective PNA immobilization and DNA-binding visualization method with an internal cross-checking system for validating the results. Testing in rice matrices indicates that the sensor is capable of detecting and distinguishing B. cereus from other bacterial species. Hence, this paper-based sensor has potential to be adopted as a practical means to detect B. cereus in food industries.

Visual individual recognition requires animals to distinguish among conspecifics based on appearance. Though visual individual recognition has been reported in a range of taxa, the features that animals rely on to discriminate between individuals are often not well understood. Northern paper wasp females, Polistes fuscatus, possess individually distinctive color patterns on their faces, which mediate individual recognition. It is currently unclear what facial features P. fuscatus use to distinguish individuals. The anterior optic tubercle, a chromatic processing brain region, is especially sensitive to social experience during development, suggesting that color may be important for recognition in this species. We sought to test the roles of color in wasp facial recognition. Color may be important simply because it creates a pattern. If this is the case, then wasps should perform similarly when discriminating color or grayscale images of the same faces. Alternatively, color itself may be important for recognition, which would predict poorer performance on grayscale image discrimination relative to color images. We found wasps trained on grayscale faces, unlike those trained on color images, did not perform better than chance. Suggesting that color is necessary for the recognition of an image as a face by the wasp visual system.

The current study revolves around development of paper from dhaincha fiber (Sesbania aculeata). Dhaincha is a basically cultivated for improvisation of soil quality. Due to deforestation worldwide, various sources of raw materials are used in paper industries. Indian pulp and paper industry is the world's major paper industry. In this study extraction of dhaincha fiber was done followed by retting, combing, chemical analysis and by making of pulp with dhaincha fiber. The dhaincha pulp was then used for making a paper from dhaincha fiber. The thickness of the dhaincha paper was then tested with paper thickness tester. By doing further processing dhaincha paper can be used commercially by paper industry.

Paper-based immunoassays are effective methods that employ microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) for the rapid, simple, and accurate quantification of analytes in point-of-care diagnosis. In this study, we developed a wax-printed multilayered μPAD for the colorimetric detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), where the device contained a movable and rotatable detection layer to allow the μPAD to switch the state of the sample solutions, i.e., flowing or storing in the sensing zones. A smartphone with a custom-developed program served as an automated colorimetric reader to capture and analyze images from the μPAD, before calculating and displaying the test results. After optimizing the crucial conditions for the assay, the proposed method exhibited a wide linear dynamic range from 0.5 to 70 ng/mL, with a low CEA detection limit of 0.015 ng/mL. The clinical performance of this method was successfully validated using 50 positive and 40 negative human serum samples, thereby demonstrating the high sensitivity of 98.0% and specificity of 97.5% in the detection of CEA. The proposed method is greatly simplified compared with the cumbersome steps required for traditional immunoassays, but without any loss of accuracy and stability, as well as reducing the time needed to detect CEA. Complex and bulky instruments are replaced with a smartphone. The proposed detection platform could potentially be applied in point-of-care testing. Graphical abstract.

Flying insect detection, identification, and counting are the key components of agricultural pest management. Insect identification is also one of the most challenging tasks in agricultural image processing. With the aid of machine vision and machine learning, traditional (manual) identification and counting can be automated. To achieve this goal, a particular data acquisition device and an accurate insect recognition algorithm (model) is necessary. In this work, we propose a new embedded system-based insect trap with an OpenMV Cam H7 microcontroller board, which can be used anywhere in the field without any restrictions (AC power supply, WIFI coverage, human interaction, etc.). In addition, we also propose a deep learning-based insect-counting method where we offer solutions for problems such as the “lack of data” and “false insect detection”. By means of the proposed trap and insect-counting method, spraying (pest swarming) could then be accurately scheduled.

This chapter describes the development of paper-based microchip electrophoresis (pME) devices for the separation of clinically relevant compounds. pME were fabricated by laser cut and thermal lamination process using polyester pouches. In addition, hand-drawn pencil electrodes were integrated to the device to perform capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C4D). Finished device costs less than US$ 0.10 and did not require either sophisticated instrumentation or clean room facilities. Furthermore, pME is lightweight, easy to handle, flexible, and robust. pME-C4D device revealed an excellent capacity to separate BSA and creatinine in less than 150 s with baseline resolution. The device proposed in this chapter has proven to be a good alternative as a platform for the diagnosis of diseases from renal disorders such as diabetes mellitus and heart disease.

Most recognition is based on identifying features, but specialization for face recognition in primates relies on a different mechanism, termed ‘holistic processing’ where facial features are bound together into a gestalt which is more than the sum of its parts. Here, we test whether individual face recognition in paper wasps also involved holistic processing using a modification of the classic part-whole test in two related paper wasp species: Polistes fuscatus , which use facial patterns to individually identify conspecifics, and Polistes dominula , which lacks individual recognition. We show that P. fuscatus use holistic processing to discriminate between P. fuscatus face images but not P. dominula face images. By contrast, P. dominula do not rely on holistic processing to discriminate between conspecific or heterospecific face images. Therefore, P. fuscatus wasps have evolved holistic face processing, but this ability is highly specific and shaped by species-specific and stimulus-specific selective pressures. Convergence towards holistic face processing in distant taxa (primates, wasps) as well as divergence among closely related taxa with different recognition behaviour ( P. dominula , P. fuscatus ) suggests that holistic processing may be a universal adaptive strategy to facilitate expertise in face recognition.

Purpose Citation content in academic papers and academic monographs promotes the knowledge flow among different publications. However, existing citation content analysis (CCA) focuses on academic papers and monographs have not received much research attention. We want to know if monographs are appropriate objects of CCA and whether existing methods of analyzing citation in papers are suitable for citation in monographs. Therefore, this paper aims to learn more about features of cited references and citation content in monographs and compare the characteristic of citation pattern between monographs and papers. Design/methodology/approach The authors manually annotate the references and syntactic citation content in academic monographs published by Morgan & Claypool and automatically extracted the references and citation content from academic papers published by Public Library of Science. Five features in two types citation pattern, namely, pattern of cited reference (including year, source and mention frequency of reference) and pattern of citation content (including location, length of citation content) are used to examine similarities and differences between monographs and papers. Findings The results indicate that between monographs and papers, differences are shown in location, length of citation content and year, source of reference, whereas frequency of mention of reference is similar. Originality/value Previous studies have explored the patter of citation content in academic papers. However, none of the existing literature, as far as the authors know, has considered the citation content in academic monographs and the similarities or differences among academic documents when studying the citation pattern.

Many studies to find solutions for the optimum synthesis problems of linkage mechanisms for path, motion or function generation have appeared in the literature. However, their main focus has been on the development of optimization algorithms or synthesis methods without the handling of the defect problems or only with consideration of the same assembly mode. Hwang and Chen's pioneering work proposed a defect-free optimum synthesis method with constraint equations to eliminate order, circuit and branch defects for Stephenson III six-bar motion generators. However, their proposed constraint equations for the three types of defects are incomplete or not clear enough. In this discussion, we not only examine these faults but also offer the correct and complete constraints to eliminate the three types of defects.

In this study, a new screening process called "bacterial SELEX" was reported to screen favorable aptamers targeting four common nosocomial and antibiotics-resistant bacteria, including Acinetobacter baumannii, vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE), Escherichia coli, and multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The new bacterial SELEX system performed three critical selecting stages for screening of bacteria-specific aptamers. A paper-based microfluidic system was further developed by using the selected specific aptamers and a biotin-streptavidin color reaction for rapid detection of these four bacteria. The proposed paper-based microfluidic chip has several advantages, such as compactness in size, ease to handle, high specificity and capability to detect multiple pathogens simultaneously. It may be promising for point-of-care applications in the near future.

Efficient and safe detection of Bacillus anthracis spores (BAS) is a challenging task especially in bio-terror scenarios where the agent is concealed. We provide a proof-of-concept for the identification of concealed BAS inside mail envelopes using short-wave infrared hyperspectral imaging (SWIR-HSI). The spores and two other benign materials are identified according to their typical absorption spectrum. The identification process is based on the removal of the envelope signal using a new automatic new algorithm. This method may serve as a fast screening tool prior to using classical bioanalytical techniques.

Previous studies from our lab have created a simple procedure for single-cell count of bacteria on a paper chip platform using optical detection from a smartphone. The procedure and steps employed are outlined along with the lessons learned and details of certain steps and how the design was optimized. Smartphone optical detection is easy to use, low cost, and potentially field deployable, which can be useful for early and rapid detection of pathogens. Smartphone imaging of a paper microfluidic chip preloaded with antibody-conjugated particles provides an adaptable platform for detection of different bacterial targets. The paper microfluidic chip was fabricated with a multichannel design. Each channel was preloaded with either a negative control of bovine serum albumin (BSA) conjugated particles, anti-Salmonella Typhimurium-conjugated particles with varying amounts (to cover different ranges of assay), or anti-Escherichia coli-conjugated particles. Samples were introduced to the paper microfluidic chip using pipetting. Antigens of Salmonella Typhimurium traveled through the channel by capillary action confined within the paper fibers surrounded by the hydrophobic barrier. The paper channel was observed to act as a filter for unwanted particles and contaminants found in field samples. Serial dilutions of known concentrations of bacterial targets were also tested using this procedure to construct a standard curve prior to the assays. The antibody-conjugated particles were able to immunoagglutinate which was quantified through evaluation of Mie scatter intensity. This Mie scattering was quantified in images taken with a smartphone at an optimized angle and distance. Mie scatter simulation provided a method of optimizing the experimental setup and could translate easily to other types of target sample matrices. A smartphone application was developed to help the user position the smartphone optimally in relation to the paper microfluidic chip. The application integrated both image capturing capability and a simple image processing algorithm that calculated bacteria concentrations. The detection limit was at a single-cell level with a total assay time ranging from 90 to less than 60 s depending on the target.

The existence of Gardu Toll Otomatis (GTO), automatic toll payment, becomes a general model for every toll payment in Indonesia. Almost toll payment models in Indonesia have a paper printout as received which is often wasted. This condition happens since not all the driver needs a paper proof of the transaction. Therefore, the wasted paper will occur everywhere for 24 h. Furthermore, in this work the design of printout system using a more efficient printout model with rotation feeding method has developed printout system. In this work, the rotation mechanism system is applied through product design engineering through Industry 4.0. This system is made by removing the printout paper that remains present to the driver who needs it, but not wasted because of the driver who does not need it. There are three important steps as follows; in the first step, the printout paper appears in a special tray which is easy to reach and takes for those who need it. In the second step, the paper will remain in the tray for the driver who did not pick it up and final step, the tray with paper printout will rotate mechanically back into the GTO machine to be destroyed by a paper shredder. The experiment of the paper printout system has been carried out. The results show that the proposed approach produces a better accuracy and efficiency. Experimental results show the testing accuracy of 90 %. The system confirms the effectiveness of the proposed paper printout system for the GTO. Pancreatic disorders, originating from alcoholism or other sources, have grown into an epidemic in modern society. It is now well known that regular monitoring of -amylase and lipase activities in the blood serum is crucial to judge the condition of the pancreas and assess progress in treatment. However, there is hardly any gadget available at the user's site which can provide guidance on pancreatic health. The present spectroscopic techniques used in pathological laboratories are not only costly but also involve significant time and expertise for testing and analysis. In view of the above, we report the development of a paper-based chemiresistive sensor for the quantitative detection of lipase concentration in human serum. The sensor can be integrated with a point-of-care-testing (POCT) device to provide affordable primary healthcare related to the pancreatic disorders. The hydrolysis of olive oil with lipase present in human blood serum results in the generation of H ions on a reduced graphene oxide-coated paper substrate. A linear variation in electrical resistance with lipase loading in serum configured the working principle of the sensor. The sensors are characterized and calibrated with known concentrations of lipase followed by successful validation with real-life human serum samples. The lower cost, simpler operation, smaller response time, and easy disposability of the sensors ensure their suitability to evolve into a POCT kit for the regular monitoring of pancreatic health at the user's end.

We present a prototype for conducting rapid, inexpensive and point-of-care-compatible nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) for tuberculosis (TB). The fluorescent isothermal paper-and-plastic NAAT (FLIPP-NAAT) uses paper-based loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) for DNA detection. The cost of materials required to build a 12-test-zone device is $0.88 and the cost of reagents per reaction is $0.43. An inexpensive imaging platform enables filter-free fluorescence detection of amplified DNA using a cell-phone camera. FLIPP-NAAT can be operated by an untrained user and only requires a regular laboratory incubator as ancillary equipment. All reagents can be dry-stored in the device, facilitating storage and transportation without cold chains. The device design is modular and the assay demonstrated high specificity to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), analytical sensitivity of the order of 10 copies of Mtb gDNA, and tolerance to complex samples. The clinical sensitivity and specificity of sputum-based FLIPP NAAT tests were 100% (zero false negatives) and 68.75% (five false positives), respectively (N = 30), using Xpert MTB/RIF assay as the reference standard. FLIPP-NAAT has the potential to provide affordable and accessible molecular diagnostics for TB in low- and middle-income countries, when used in conjunction with an appropriate sample preparation technique. Although demonstrated for the detection of TB, FLIPP-NAAT is a platform technology for amplification of any nucleic acid sequence.

In 2017, IEEE VIS returns to the city of Phoenix, AZ, USA, for the conference's 28th year. The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix hotel. VIS consists of three conferences, held concurrently: the IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology Conference (VAST 2017), the IEEE Information Visualization Conference (InfoVis 2017), and the IEEE Scientific Visualization Conference (SciVis 2017). Information on the paper review process is provided along with an overview of each conference.

Point-of-care testing (POCT) of infectious bacterial agents offers substantial benefits for disease diagnosis, mainly by shortening the time required to obtain results and by making the test available bedside or at remote care centers. Immunochromatographic lateral flow biosensors offer a low cost, highly sensitive platform for POCT. In this article, we describe the fabrication and testing of a multiplex immuno-disc sensor for the specific detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Antibody conjugated gold nanoparticles were used as the signaling agents. The detection range of the bacteria lies within 500-5000 CFU/ml. The advantage of the immuno-disc sensor is that it does not require any preprocessing of biological sample and is capable of whole cell bacterial detection. We also describe the design and fabrication of a compact portable device which converts the color intensity of the gold nanoparticles that accumulate at the test region into a quantitative voltage reading proportional to the bacterial concentration in the sample. The combination of the immuno-disc and the portable color reader provides a rapid, sensitive, low cost, and quantitative tool for the detection of a panel of infectious agents present in the patient sample.

In this work, an origami paper-based analytical device for glucose biosensor by employing fully-drawn pencil electrodes has been reported. The three-electrode system was prepared on paper directly by drawing with nothing more than pencils. By simple printing, two separated zones on paper were designed for the immobilization of the mediator and glucose oxidase (GOx), respectively. The used paper provides a favorable and biocompatible support for maintaining the bioactivities of GOx. With a sandwich-type scheme, the origami biosensor exhibited great analytical performance for glucose sensing including acceptable reproducibility and favorable selectivity against common interferents in physiological fluids. The limit of detection and linear range achieved with the approach was 0.05 mM and 1–12 mM, respectively. Its analytical performance was also demonstrated in the analysis of human blood samples. Such fully-drawn paper-based device is cheap, flexible, portable, disposable, and environmentally friendly, affording great convenience for practical use under resource-limited conditions. We therefore envision that this approach can be extended to generate other functional paper-based devices.

We propose a binary message passing decoding algorithm for product codes based on generalized minimum distance decoding (GMDD) of the component codes, where the last stage of the GMDD makes a decision based on the Hamming distance metric. The proposed algorithm closes half of the gap between conventional iterative bounded distance decoding (iBDD) and turbo product decoding based on the Chase–Pyndiah algorithm, at the expense of some increase in complexity. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm entails only a limited increase in data flow compared to iBDD.

The ensemble of odorant receptors on the antenna of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster acts as an encoder for chemical molecules. Chemically similar odorants elicit activity in similar subsets of the receptors, spanning a so-called chemotopic feature space that enables chemical similarity search. A compound signal of receptor activity can be read out by calcium imaging of the antenna, yet without revealing corresponding receptors on different antennae. Employing Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) for multiple sets, we show that a consensus feature space can nevertheless be recovered from a group of variable antenna sensors that all respond to a common sequence of odorants. In the chemotopic consensus feature space, properties of novel odorants can be inferred, demonstrating how fruit fly antenna chemosensors may be employed as an alternative to electronic noses.

This is a review paper based on the author's long experience of annual crops as raw material for pulp and paper use. The paper starts with a general world scan touching upon such subjects as world production of crop fibres for paper, different crops suitable for the purpose, and the outlook for the future. An attempt is then made to compare the better known wood plant fibres with non-wood plant fibres and to develop criteria which should help the paper product designer to make better use of the existing plant fibres. The paper thus ends by pointing out the niche as far as price/performance is concerned for pulps from annual crops.

This paper presents a portable paper-based microfluidic platform for multiplexed electrochemical detection of antibody markers of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in serum samples. To our best knowledge, this is the first paper-based electrochemical immunosensing platform, with multiplexing and telemedicine capabilities, for diagnosing HIV/HCV co-infection. The platform consists of an electrochemical microfluidic paper-based immunosensor array (E-μPIA) and a handheld multi-channel potentiostat, and is capable of performing enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays simultaneously on eight samples within 20 min (using a prepared E-μPIA). The multiplexing feature of the platform allows it to produce multiple measurement data for HIV and HCV markers from a single run, and its wireless communication module can transmit the results to a remote site for telemedicine. The unique integration of paper-based microfluidics and mobile instrumentation renders our platform portable, low-cost, user-friendly, and high-throughput.

The main intention of this study paper is to explore and analyze the numerous methods that are used for license plate extraction and identification. Analysis is done by detailed study of the prevailing methodologies and their drawbacks were duly notified. Various concepts such as OCR reading, bounding method and other computational techniques were thoroughly studied and are recorded below. Thus, with the knowledge gained from this review, a pristine and a noble method were developed for the same by utilizing the concept of API. This not only involves extraction of characters from the license plate but also aids in the identification of the vehicle model, as a whole, with the help of image processing. This method is not merely effective for detection but also holds good for certain amount of automation with the aid of the upheld database. These techniques of detection backboned by databases can prove to be very effective in a wide range of use-cases in the current world. Such identification as well as compilation of useful data can be implemented in applications such as automatic toll system, fee collection in parking areas, traffic disciplinary maintenance, vehicle monitoring inside a premise and much more.

Extensive research has been conducted in recent years on how radiofrequency fields (RF) generated by mobile phones and other wireless communication devices might affect health. However, so far, no scientific consensus is reached. On the one hand there are reports from independent international expert groups who claim that there are no solid indications that such fields may impair human health, on the other hand there are numerous published scientific papers showing alarming effects on virtually all investigated endpoints. Members of ‘action groups’ and ‘engaged citizens’ are essentially aware of the frightening data and hence they do not understand how authorities and health agencies do not seem that much alarmed. We have performed a literature search over an approximately two year period on in vitro and in vivo experimental studies and found that 85% of the papers indeed reported adverse bio effects. However, many of the papers are deficient in one or many ways and are not seldom published in non-specialized journals with poor quality control. Looking at specialized peer reviewed scientific journals the number of papers reporting bio effects drops to about 50%. From these many report only minor (not necessarily adverse) effects, while others report effects at high exposure levels usually not found in our daily life. This explains the more reassuring attitude of expert groups and authorities. It should be realized yet that lack of consistency in scientific data does not means lack of effect and that a simple application of the precautionary approach is still needed.

Objectives: To design a Sensor for the detection of bacteria in water and food like unpasteurized milk, undercooked beef, juices, soft cheeses made from raw milk etc. Methods: COMSOL 4.4 simulation tool is used to design the micro post array that captures the bacterial cell (E.coli) in the food samples. Findings: We propose a new approach in MEMS sensor design on paper substrate for the detection of bacteria in water and food. Paper based MEMS sensor are said to be less cost easily used and disposable, on sight implemented, bio compatible and easily fabricated. Application: The paper based MEMS is a raising technology particularly in the field of food quality control and food testing, health diagnostic, environmental monitoring.

People sometimes choose word-like abbreviations to refer to items with a long description. These abbreviations usually come from the descriptive text of the item and are easy to remember and pronounce, while preserving the key idea of the item. Coming up with a nice abbreviation is not an easy job, even for human. Previous assistant naming systems compose names by applying hand-written rules, which may not perform well. In this paper, we propose to view the naming task as an artificial intelligence problem and create a data set in the domain of academic naming. To generate more delicate names, we propose a three-step framework, including description analysis, candidate generation and abbreviation ranking, each of which is parameterized and optimizable. We conduct experiments to compare different settings of our framework with several analysis approaches from different perspectives. Compared to online or baseline systems, our framework could achieve the best results.

This paper provides a descriptive content analysis of biology education research papers published in eight major academic journals indexed in Social Science Citation Index [SSCI] of Thomson Reuters® from 1997 to 2014. Total of 1376 biology education research [BER] papers were examined. The findings indicated that most of the papers were published in the JBE and IJSE, and frequently studied topics were environment and ecology, genetics and biotechnology, and animal form and function. The findings were also indicated that learning, teaching and attitudes was in the forefront as the frequently investigated subject matters, undergraduate and secondary school students were mostly preferred as sample group and sample size mostly varies between 31-100 and 101-300. In addition, it was found out that interactive qualitative research designs were mostly preferred. Besides, that single data collection tool was generally used and this data collection tool included questionnaires, interviews and documents. Finally, frequency/percentage tables, central tendency measures, statistical analysis such as t-test and ANOVA/ANCOVA and content analysis were commonly used as data analysis.

Plasmonic biosensors hold enormous potential for the development of low-cost, label-free, point-of-care biodiagnostics. However, two major challenges need to be overcome to reap the benefits of this class of biosensors: (i) state-of-the-art plasmonic biosensors either offer limited sensitivity or are impractical for real-world applications due to their poor stability and excessive cost; (ii) these biosensors rely on natural antibodies, which are high-cost and impose severe limitations in handling, storage and device integration. We demonstrate that a common filter paper can be transformed into a plasmonic sensing platform for highly sensitive and selective detection of trace levels of chemical and biological analytes. We also demonstrate that short peptides as biorecognition elements compared to larger antibodies as target capture agents offer several advantages. Using a bioplasmonic paper device, we demonstrate the selective and sensitive detection of the cardiac biomarker troponin I. The smaller sized peptide provides higher sensitivity and a lower detection limit using a bioplasmonic paper device. Furthermore, the excellent shelf-life and thermal stability of peptide-based plasmonic biosensors, which precludes the need for special storage conditions, makes it ideal for use in resource-limited settings. We also demonstrate plasmonic biosensors based on artificial antibodies by molecularly imprinting the plasmonic nanotransducers. Apart from significantly lowering the cost, these developments are critical for translating plasmonic sensors to point-of-care and resource-limited settings.

Motivation: Converting the vast quantity of free-format text found in journals into a concise, structured format makes the researcher's quest for information easier. Recently, several information extraction systems have been developed that attempt to simplify the retrieval and analysis of biological and medical data. Most of this work has used the abstract alone, owing to the convenience of access and the quality of data. Abstracts are generally available through central collections with easy direct access (e.g. PubMed). The full-text papers contain more information, but are distributed across many locations (e.g. publishers' web sites, journal web sites and local repositories), making access more difficult. In this paper, we present BioRAT, a new information extraction (IE) tool, specifically designed to perform biomedical IE, and which is able to locate and analyse both abstracts and full-length papers. BioRAT is a Biological Research Assistant for Text mining, and incorporates a document search ability with domain-specific IE. Results: We show first, that BioRAT performs as well as existing systems, when applied to abstracts; and second, that significantly more information is available to BioRAT through the full-length papers than via the abstracts alone. Typically, less than half of the available information is extracted from the abstract, with the majority coming from the body of each paper. Overall, BioRAT recalled 20.31% of the target facts from the abstracts with 55.07% precision, and achieved 43.6% recall with 51.25% precision on full-length papers. Peer-reviewed publication is at the core of scientific communication. However, with the exception of biomedicine, there has been little analysis of the rate of peer-reviewed publication resulting from conference abstracts. This study examined a random sample of abstracts from the 1989 and 1991 Biennial Conferences on the Biology of Marine Mammals to determine how many were published as peer-reviewed papers. Publication rates were 51.4% (±4.7%) and 51.2% (±4.6%), respectively. This low abstract-to-publication rate, coupled with editorial policies prohibiting citation of conference abstracts in some journals, limits access to recent research, and thus affects the vibrance of the discipline.
