Abstract

Calls are intensifying for workforce reskilling and a re-engineering of education and training to meet the demands of the future. Current policy in England focuses on technical, digital and green economy skills, underpinned by strong literacy and numeracy and a knowledge-rich school curriculum. National Foundation for Educational Research's Nuffield-funded research study, "The Skills Imperative 2035: Essential skills for tomorrow's workforce" investigates: (1) which essential employment skills will be most needed in 2035; (2) what will their likely supply be and where will the gaps be; (3) which occupations and workers are most at risk of not having these skills; (4) which skills will affected workers need to develop to transition into new employment opportunities; and (5) the role of educators and employers in helping to prepare young people and workers for the future labour market. This first report, a review drawing on a wide-ranging and growing evidence base, sets the scene for the wider research study by bringing together what the literature suggests about: (1) what the world of work will look like in 2035; and (2) which essential employment skills will be in demand and how what should be done to prepare.

Abstract

Recent advances in computational linguistics and the social sciences have created new opportunities for the education research community to analyze relevant large-scale text data. However, the take-up of these advances in education research is still nascent. In this paper, we review the recent automated text methods relevant to educational processes and determinants. We discuss both lexical-based and supervised methods, which expand the scale of text that researchers can analyze, as well as unsupervised methods, which allow researchers to discover new themes in their data. To illustrate these methods, we analyze the text interactions from a field experiment in the discussion forums of online classes. Our application shows that respondents provide less assistance and discuss slightly different topics with the randomized female posters, but respond with similar levels of positive and negative sentiment. These results demonstrate that combining qualitative coding with machine learning techniques can provide for a rich understanding of text-based interactions.

Abstract

Paper based assays are paving the way to automated, simplified, robust and cost-effective point of care testing (POCT). We propose a method for fabricating three dimensional (3D) microfluidic paper based analytical devices (μPADs) via combining thin adhesive films and paper folding, which avoids the use of cellulose powders and the complex folding sequence and simultaneously permits assays in several layers. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, a 3DμPADs was designed to conduct more assays on a small footprint, allowing dual colorimetric and electrochemical detections. More importantly, we further developed a 3D platform for implementing automated and multiplexed ELISA in parallel, since ELISA, a routine and standard laboratory method, has rarely been used in practical analyses outside of the laboratory. In this configuration, complex and multistep diagnostic assays can be carried out with the addition of the sample and buffer in a simple fashion. Using Troponin I as model, the device showed a broad dynamic range of detection with a detection limit of 0.35 ng/mL. Thus, the developed platforms allow for various assays to be cost-effectively carried out on a single 3D device, showing great potential in an academic setting and point of care testing under resource-poor conditions., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Infectious diseases remain one of the leading causes of deaths in developing countries because of a lack of basic sanitation, healthcare clinics, and centralized laboratories. Paper-based rapid diagnostic tests, such as the lateral-flow immunoassay (LFA), provide a promising alternative to the traditional laboratory-based tests; however, they typically suffer from having a poor sensitivity. Biomarker preconcentration and signal enhancement are two common methods to improve the sensitivity of paper-based assays. While effective, these methods often require multiple liquid handling steps which are not ideal for use by untrained personnel in a point-of-care setting. Our lab previously discovered the phenomenon of an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) separating on paper, which allowed for the seamless integration of concentration and detection of biomarkers on the LFA. In this work, we have extended the functionality of an ATPS separating on paper to automate the sequential delivery of signal enhancement reagents in addition to concentrating biomarkers. The timing of reagent delivery was controlled by changing the initial composition of the ATPS. We applied this technology to automate biomarker concentration and nanozyme signal enhancement on the LFA, resulting in a 30-fold improvement in detection limit over the conventional LFA when detecting Escherichia coli , all while maintaining a single application step.

Abstract

Almost in a blink of the eye the policy focus on the 'knowledge' economy, with mass ranks of high skilled workers, has given way to claims of widespread 'technological unemployment'. This Working Paper will examine competing claims on the relationship between automation, skills and the future of work. It examines the research evidence on the scale of job losses anticipated as a consequence of digital disruption. It presents three scenarios of the impact of digital disruption on future skill requirements, before considering how evidence on automation and digital disruption is used to influence and inform UK government policy interventions on skills, employment and labour markets. In conclusion, we recommend caution in interpreting existing evidence. While high profile reports on digital disruption make for eye-catching headlines, they make for poor policy formulation. A key message is that technology is not destiny. It is human decisions that will determine the future of work.

This paper focuses on the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in academic library operations. In the quest to render fast, effective and efficient services, academic libraries have adopted different technologies in the past. Artificial intelligence technologies is the latest among the technologies currently being introduced in libraries. The technology which is considered an intelligent system, come in the form of robots and expert systems which have natural language processing, machine learning and pattern recognition capabilities. This paper examined the features of AI, the application of AI to library operations, examples of academic libraries with AI technologies in Sub-Saharan Africa, the need for AI in libraries and the challenges associated with the adoption of AI in libraries. The study concluded that AI holds a lot of prospects for the improvement of information services delivery in African academic libraries. Consequently, its adoption is a sinequanon to delivering robust library services in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

Abstract Large language models (LLMs) are an exciting breakthrough in the rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence (AI), offering unparalleled potential in a variety of application domains such as finance, business, healthcare, cybersecurity, and so on. However, concerns regarding their trustworthiness and ethical implications have become increasingly prominent as these models are considered black-box and continue to progress. This position paper explores the potentiality of LLM from diverse perspectives as well as the associated risk factors with awareness. Towards this, we highlight not only the technical challenges but also the ethical implications and societal impacts associated with LLM deployment emphasizing fairness, transparency, explainability, trust and accountability. We conclude this paper by summarizing potential research scopes with direction. Overall, the purpose of this position paper is to contribute to the ongoing discussion of LLM potentiality and awareness from the perspective of trustworthiness and responsibility in AI.

21. Automatic Scoring of Paper-and-Pencil Figural Responses. Research Report.

Abstract

Large-scale testing is dominated by the multiple-choice question format. Widespread use of the format is due, in part, to the ease with which multiple-choice items can be scored automatically. This paper examines automatic scoring procedures for an alternative item type: figural response. Figural response items call for the completion or modification of figural material, including illustrations, diagrams, and graphs. Twenty-five science items were written in cooperation with the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and were printed with an ink that was invisible to scanning equipment. The items were answered with pencils; response sheets were scanned, and the resulting data were processed by computer-based scoring algorithms. The paper describes the technology that led to successful pilot scoring of 7 items for 10 subjects. Implications of this technology for the future of large-scale testing are discussed. Abstract

In Brazil, electronic technicians are increasingly being asked to perform a number of technical and nontechnical tasks, for which they need complex education and training or multiskilling. The typical tasks faced by electronic technicians require a relatively high level of abstraction and symbolic learning. Required skills cover a broad range of intellectual and technical abilities. Electronics is expected to keep changing, and technicians should be able to keep up with these developments and to learn how to learn. Employers value technicians with general abilities and knowledge subsumed under the general term of trainability. They are also concerned with two major categories of theoretical knowledge: the basic principles behind the functioning of electronic systems and equipment and the specific disciplines that impart knowledge, information, and technical skills in electronics, automation, pneumatics, and mechanics. Both employers and students expect electronics to be a lifelong experience. An analysis of 30 years of curriculum change in the electronics school of Santa Rita do Sapucai shows that pure theory in the 1960s became applied in the 1970s. The critical challenge of multiskilling is to overcome the tension between the employer's demand for increasingly highly qualified technicians and the immediate realities of the workplace where repetitive jobs predominate and limit the extent to which higher skills can be used and developed. Abstract

Objective: This paper describes several automation tools and software that can be considered during evidence synthesis projects and provides guidance for their integration in the conduct of scoping reviews., Study Design and Setting: The guidance presented in this work is adapted from the results of a scoping review and consultations with the JBI Scoping Review Methodology group., Results: This paper describes several reliable, validated automation tools and software that can be used to enhance the conduct of scoping reviews. Developments in the automation of systematic reviews, and more recently scoping reviews, are continuously evolving. We detail several helpful tools in order of the key steps recommended by the JBI's methodological guidance for undertaking scoping reviews including team establishment, protocol development, searching, de-duplication, screening titles and abstracts, data extraction, data charting, and report writing. While we include several reliable tools and software that can be used for the automation of scoping reviews, there are some limitations to the tools mentioned. For example, some are available in English only and their lack of integration with other tools results in limited interoperability., Conclusion: This paper highlighted several useful automation tools and software programs to use in undertaking each step of a scoping review. This guidance has the potential to inform collaborative efforts aiming at the development of evidence informed, integrated automation tools and software packages for enhancing the conduct of high-quality scoping reviews., (© 2024 The Author(s). 37. Internet Administration of the Paper-and-Pencil Gifted Rating Scale: Assessing Psychometric Equivalence

Abstract

The present study examined the psychometric equivalence of administering a computer-based version of the Gifted Rating Scale (GRS) compared with the traditional paper-and-pencil GRS-School Form (GRS-S). The GRS-S is a teacher-completed rating scale used in gifted assessment. The GRS-Electronic Form provides an alternative method of administering and completing the 72-item scale, which eases scoring and interpretation of the measure. The GRS-E reduces the potential for human error by implementing automated scoring. An automated form may increase the likelihood that the measure is utilized, supporting wider screening in the schools for gifted identification. Five of the six subscales were completed by teachers in matched pairs on 185 students. Results indicate strong internal consistency across both administration forms and no significant difference in mean scores. This study contributes to the growing body of literature in support of the psychometric equivalence of paper-and-pencil report forms administered in a computer-based environment.

Abstract

Recovered paper is the most important raw material for paper industry today and paper industry is one of the forerunners of circular economy. However, despite the long history with recycling the characterization of recovered paper quality is still not solved sufficiently. Here the automatic classification of paper objects can bring significant progress. Up to now, most technical approaches use NIR sensors and visual cameras, which can only “see” the surface of the objects. This often leads to misclassifications, since, for example, many packages look like graphic papers due to their printed surface. To improve these challenging classification tasks, sensors for mechanical properties of the paper objects can make an important contribution. In this paper, an automatic sensor is presented which can measure force characteristics when penetrating paper objects with specially shaped measuring tips. These force characteristics show good correlations to the mechanical properties determined in the laboratory according to standardized methods.

40. GPTZero vs. Text Tampering: The Battle That GPTZero Wins

Abstract

The growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots has created a great deal of discussion in the education community. While many have gravitated towards the ability of these bots to make learning more interactive, others have grave concerns that student created essays, long used as a means of assessing the subject comprehension of students, may be at risk. The bot's ability to quickly create high quality papers, sometimes complete with reference material, has led to concern that these programs will make students too reliant on their ability and not develop the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed. The rise in these applications has led to the need for the development of detection programs that are able to read the students submitted work and return an accurate estimation of if the paper is human or computer created. These detection programs use natural language processing's (NLP) ideas of perplexity, or randomness of the text, and burstiness, or the tendency for certain words and phrases to appear together, plus sophisticated algorithms to compare the essays to preexisting literature to generate an accurate estimation on the likely author of the paper. The use of these systems has been found to be highly effective in reducing plagiarism among students, however concerns have been raised about the limitations of these systems. False positives, false negatives, and cross language identification are three areas of concern amongst faculty and have led to reduced usage of the detection engines. Despite the limitations however, these systems are a valuable tool for educational institutions to maintain academic integrity and ensure that students are submitting original work. Abstract

Background: Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) provides much more information compared to non-enhanced CT images, especially for the differentiation of malignancies, such as liver carcinomas. Contrast media injection phase information is usually missing on public datasets and not standardized in the clinic even in the same region and language. This is a barrier to effective use of available CECT images in clinical research., Purpose: The aim of this study is to detect contrast media injection phase from CT images by means of organ segmentation and machine learning algorithms., Methods: A total number of 2509 CT images split into four subsets of non-contrast (class #0), arterial (class #1), venous (class #2), and delayed (class #3) after contrast media injection were collected from two CT scanners. Seven organs including the liver, spleen, heart, kidneys, lungs, urinary bladder, and aorta along with body contour masks were generated by pre-trained deep learning algorithms. Subsequently, five first-order statistical features including average, standard deviation, 10, 50, and 90 percentiles extracted from the above-mentioned masks were fed to machine learning models after feature selection and reduction to classify the CT images in one of four above mentioned classes. A 10-fold data split strategy was followed. The performance of our methodology was evaluated in terms of classification accuracy metrics., Results: The best performance was achieved by Boruta feature selection and RF model with average area under the curve of more than 0.999 and accuracy of 0.9936 averaged over four classes and 10 folds. Boruta feature selection selected all predictor features. The lowest classification was observed for class #2 (0.9888), which is already an excellent result. In the 10-fold strategy, only 33 cases from 2509 cases (∼1.4%) were misclassified. The performance over all folds was consistent., Conclusions: We developed a fast, accurate, reliable, and explainable methodology to classify contrast media phases which may be useful in data curation and annotation in big online datasets or local datasets with non-standard or no series description. Our model containing two steps of deep learning and machine learning may help to exploit available datasets more effectively., (© 2024 The Authors.
