The Cooper's D deposit has been dated by U-Pb at a maximum age of 1.37 Ma ± 0.113 and has yielded seven Hominini remains, six of them are attributed to the Southern African endemic species Paranthropus robustus Broom, 1938. However, the taxonomic composition of the faunal assemblage recovered at this site, especially ruminants, remains poorly understood. This paper updates the previous palaeontological and biochronological works and provides the first taxonomic description and paleoecological analysis of the whole bovid material from Cooper's D. We propose a minimum age of 1.0 Ma for the Cooper's D bone accumulation. Thus, we conclude that the assemblage accumulated between 1.375 ± 0.113 and 1.0 Ma based on the complementary results obtained from radiometric dates and biochronology. The paleoecological analysis suggests that Cooper's D is likewise dominated by grassland with sparse covered habitat and probable water sources in the vicinity. Finally, we show a strong statistically significant negative correlation between the presence of grassland-adapted bovid species and P. robustus. This result indicates that P. robustus was more likely to be an eurytopic species and dietary generalist than an exclusive grazer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Globally, marriage is on a decline and this can be traced to as early as the 1940s in South Africa. This paper explores marriage declines in South Africa, specifically the reasons why young, educated women are delaying marriage. It draws on a qualitative study using in-depth interviews with thirty Zulu-speaking female university students in Durban, South Africa. Women with higher education attainment opt for a later age of marriage in order to establish themselves financially, gain independence, build their careers and accrue some assets as well as to improve their families' living standards. The women in this study are highly aspirant and want to marry partners with attributes that are equally matched to them. The study suggests that it is important to focus on the attitudes of young, educated women in order to better understand the delay in marriage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The post-apartheid state in South Africa inherited a care regime that historically combined liberal, social democratic and conservative features. The post-apartheid state has sought to deracialise the care regime, through extending to the African majority the privileges that hitherto had been largely confined to the white minority, and to transform it, to render it more appropriate to the needs and norms of the African majority. Deracialisation proved insufficient and transformation too limited to address inequalities in access to care. Reform also generated tensions, including between a predominant ideology that accords women and children rights as autonomous individuals, the widespread belief in kinship obligations and an enduring if less widespread conservative, patriarchal ideology. Ordinary people must navigate between the market (if they can afford it), the state and the family, balancing opportunities for independence with the claims made on and by kin. In a 2004 letter to the King and Government of Morocco, South Africa's second democratically-elected president, Thabo Mbeki, announced the decision to fully recognize the Saharawi Republic as a state though the United Nations process of facilitating a negotiated end to disagreement between Morocco and Saharawi people represented by the Polisario Front had not concluded. The letter suggested that the hope for a negotiated solution had been dashed. South Africa has maintained this position, aligning with the AU official position to Morocco's chagrin. This paper employs an Afro-decolonial lens of analysis to critically analyze this policy position and how this is impacted upon by the aggressive growth of Moroccan influence in multilateral Africa. We compiled known occurrence records of seven species of crabs identified in the literature and one documented in this report as having undergone range extensions in southern Africa. Of these eight species, six (Austruca occidentalis , Neosarmatium africanum , Ocypode ceratophthalmus , Portunus segnis , Tubuca urvillei , and Varuna litterata) have extended their ranges either across a major biogeographic boundary that separates the subtropical and warm temperate ecoregions of this coast, or into estuaries that historically lack mangrove forests. For the seventh and eighth species, Charybdis smithii and Scylla serrata , we were unable to find any distributional data that supported poleward range extension. In addition, we contribute the first record of the blue swimming crab, P. segnis , from the temperate south coast of South Africa. This early detection is likely to be part of an ongoing regional trend of tropical-adapted brachyuran crab species extending their ranges into temperate ecoregions. Sur ces huit espèces, six (Austruca occidentalis , Neosarmatium africanum , Ocypode ceratophthalmus , Portunus segnis , Tubuca urvillei , et Varuna litterata) ont étendu leur répartition soit à travers une limite biogéographique majeure qui sépare les écorégions subtropicale et tempérée chaude de cette côte, soit dans les estuaires qui historiquement n'ont pas de forêt de mangrove. Pour les septième et huitième espèces, Charybdis smithii et Scylla serrata , nous n'avons pas pu trouver de données de distribution qui supportent une extension vers le pôle. De plus, nous apportons le premier signalement du crabe bleu P. segnis , de la côte tempérée sud de l'Afrique du Sud. Transformation imperatives in contemporary South Africa require greater workforce participation by Black South African women but we know very little about their lived experiences. To address this gap, we conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with black mothers employed in professional occupations. We use an intersectionality lens to show how the interplay of race, gender and organisational culture hinders the advancement of Black women professionals. In doing so, we lay the groundwork for the development of new theory and the implementation of strategies that incorporate contemporary insights on race, gender, work and family.
