Monostroma latissimum (Kützing) Wittrock is an intertidal rock-dwelling green algal species of commercial importance in Japan. This article reports on the seasonality of its growth and occurrence from three distinct habitats of marine and estuarine regions in Tosa Bay, Japan, for two consecutive growth seasons. Thallus lengths of individuals and environmental parameters were monitored monthly between November 2005 and July 2007. Culture studies were carried out to establish the species-level identity of the specimens. Nuclear encoded ITS 1 (Internal Transcribed Spacer 1) sequences reveal that the naturally occurring strain of M. latissimum has identical nucleotide sequences to those of the commercially cultivated strain from the Shimanto river estuary. We have also found that the two strains are cross-fertilizing. Seasonal fluctuations in thallus length were found to be distinctive to the habitat where the strain grows and re-occur annually. Algal cover was highest during winter months and lowest during the summer. However, we found only a very weak positive correlation between chosen environmental parameters and thallus length. Appearance and decay of thalli occurred earlier in high saline habitats. Therefore, it is likely that salinity influences the maturation of microscopic sporophytes or the growth and survival of germlings in M. latissimum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two new species of dicyemid mesozoan are described from Sepia longipes, Sasaki, 1913, collected from Tosa Bay in Japan. Dicyema oxycephalum n. sp. is a medium-sized species that is about 1,800 μm in length. It lives in folds of the renal appendages. The vermiform stages are characterized as having 28-34 peripheral cells, a conical calotte, and an axial cell that extends to the base of the propolar cells. Infusoriform embryos consist of 39 cells; 2 nuclei are present in each urn cell and the refringent bodies are solid. Pseudicyema cappacephalum n. sp. is also a medium-size species; it is about 1,000 μm in length. It too lives in folds of the renal appendages. The vermiform stages are characterized as having 32-34 peripheral cells, a cap-shaped calotte, and an axial cell that extends to the base of propolar cells. Infusoriform embryos consist of 39 cells; 2 nuclei are present in each urn cell and the refringent bodies are solid. This is the first description of dicyemids from S. longipes. Changes in the growth of the Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus during a period of declining stock size was examined by using sardines sampled from 1990 to 1996 in Tosa Bay, south-western Japan, one of the main spawning grounds on the Pacific coast of Japan during February and March. The growth parameter k -values of the von Bertalanffy growth equation of female sardines were small in the 1987–1990 years classes, while the values for the 1991–1992 years classes were larger, which corresponded closely with the decrease in catch of the sardines in south-western Japan, suggesting that there are density-dependent effects on the growth of sardines in Tosa Bay. In contrast, the body length decreased since the 1993 years class, but the fatness of female sardines improved after 1993. Since 1994, many I year females with transparent eggs in the ovaries have been collected from Tosa Bay. It is speculated that good nutritional conditions of the 1993 year class led to maturation at an earlier age, and that the decrease of growth from the 1993 year class occurred due to the reduction of resources channeled to growth as a result of the maturation at I year. To elucidate the recruitment and movement process of larval ayuin the surf zone of a sandy beach facing Tosa Bay, 31 collectionswere made with a small seine net at intervals of approximately 5days from November 1990 to April 1991. On the basis of seasonalvariations in larval abundance, size, age, duration of residence,and the occurrence patterns of ayu in the surf zone, larval ayuwere classified into two groups: short-term resident (< 30days in duration) and long-term resident (90–120 days).The former appeared in the surf zone abundantly from mid-Novemberto mid-December and resided there for about 1 month until they reachedapproximately 25 mm BL. It is likely that larval ayu (short-termresident), which recruit abundantly to the surf zone, expand their distributionoffshore at approximately 25 mm BL. In contrast, the lattergroup were found after mid-December, and the population size wasmarkedly small although they stayed continuously in the surf zonefor 3–4 months until they reached approximately 40 mmBL.
