Purpose: This study aims to explore the daily stressors experienced by adolescents with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the perceived impact of those stressors on their self‐management and psychological well‐being. Design and Methods: We conducted semistructured in‐depth telephone interviews using a qualitative descriptive approach with 20 adolescents aged 14–17 years with T1D and analyzed subsequent data using thematic analysis. Results: Participants who were non‐Hispanic white made up 85% of the sample, 75% identified as female and mean age was 15 years. The study identified two key themes: "the everyday stress of living with diabetes" and "managing stress and supporting psychological well‐being." Participants described heightened mental load, the impact of daily activities, stress associated with public diabetes management, and added stress due to COVID‐19. Primary mitigation techniques included family support, peer support networks, activity engagement, and personal acceptance of their condition. Practice Implications: We found that there is a compound effect that occurs with balancing daily disease management with normative activities of daily living. These data will help guide the design of new interventions and tailoring of existing interventions. While action selection strategies in well-defined domains have received considerable attention, little is yet known about how people choose what to do next in ill-defined tasks. In this contribution, we shed light on this issue by considering everyday tasks, which in many cases have a multitude of possible solutions (e.g., it does not matter in which order the items are brought to the table when setting a table) and are thus categorized as ill-defined problems. Even if there are no hard constraints on the ordering of subtasks in everyday activities, our research shows that people exhibit specific preferences. We propose that these preferences arise from bounded rationality, that is, people only have limited knowledge and processing power available, which results in a preference to minimize the overall physical and cognitive effort. In the context of everyday activities, this can be achieved by (a) taking properties of the spatial environment into account to use them to one's advantage, and (b) employing a stepwise-optimal action selection strategy. We present the Opportunistic Planning Model as an explanatory cognitive model, which instantiates these assumptions, and show that the model is able to generalize to new everyday tasks, outperforming machine learning models such as neural networks during generalization., (© 2024 The Authors. Mobility can be defined as the ability to move or be moved freely and easily. In older adults, mobility impairments are common and associated with risk for additional loss of function. Mobility loss is particularly common in these individuals during acute illness and hospitalization, and it is associated with poor outcomes, including loss of muscle mass and strength, long hospital stays, falls, declines in activities of daily living, decline in community mobility and social participation, and nursing home placement. Thus, mobility loss can have a large effect on an older adult's health, independence, and quality of life. Nevertheless, despite its importance, loss of mobility is not a widely recognized outcome of hospital care, and few hospitals routinely assess mobility and intervene to improve mobility during hospital stays. The Quality and Performance Measurement Committee of the American Geriatrics Society has developed a white paper supporting greater focus on mobility as an outcome for hospitalized older adults. The executive summary presented here focuses on assessing and preventing mobility loss in older adults in the hospital and summarizes the recommendations from that white paper. Mapping the psychobiological correlates of social contexts, experiences, and emotional responses of adolescents in their daily lives provides insight into how adolescent well-being shapes, and is shaped by, experience. Measures of these psychobiological correlates are enabled by devices and technologies that must be precise and suitable for adolescent participants. The present report reviews the most often used research measures, and suggests strategies for best practice, drawn from practical experience. The rapid advances in technological methods to collect attuned measures of psychological processes, social context, and biological function indicate the promise for multimodal measures in ecological settings. Body care is considered a key aspect of nursing and imperative for the health, wellbeing, and dignity of older people. In Scandinavian countries, body care as a professional practice has undergone considerable changes, bringing new understandings, values, and dilemmas into nursing. A systematic mapping review was conducted with the aims of identifying and mapping international nursing research on body care of older people in different institutionalized settings in the healthcare system and to critically discuss the dominant assumptions within the research by adapting a problematization approach. Most identified papers reported on empirical research with a biomedical approach focusing on outcome and effectiveness. Conceptual papers, papers with a focus on the perspectives of the older people, or contextual and material aspects were lacking. The research field is dominated by four dominant assumptions: Body care as an evidence‐based practice, body care as a relational ethical practice, the body as a body‐object and a body‐subject, the objects in the body care practices as nonrelational materialities. Given the complexities of professional body care practices, there is a need for other research designs and theoretical perspectives within nursing that expand our understanding of body care taking into consideration the multiple social and material realities. Objectives: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), like other sinonasal diseases, may be associated with avoidance of daily activities. Our goal was to identify characteristics associated with avoidance of activities due to CRS., Materials and Methods: A total of 194 CRS patients were recruited. CRS symptom burden was assessed with the 22-item Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22). SNOT-22 nasal, sleep, ear/facial discomfort and emotional/psychological subdomain scores were calculated. Depressed mood was assessed using the two-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2). Personality traits including conscientiousness, neuroticism, agreeableness, openness, and extraversion were assessed using the Big Five Inventory-10 (BFI-10) questionnaire. As the primary outcome, participants rated how often in the prior week that they had avoided any activities in day-to-day life due to their nasal or sinus symptoms on a scale of "never," "rarely," "sometimes," "often," or "extremely often." Ordinal regression models, with bootstrap validation, were used to identify associations between activity avoidance and participants' characteristics., Results: On multivariable analysis, SNOT-22 score (odds ratio [OR] = 1.03, 95% CI, 1.01-1.04, P = .026), and conscientiousness personality trait (OR = 1.38, 95% CI, 1.05-1.81, P = .019) were positively associated with activity avoidance while age (OR = 0.98, 95% CI, 0.96-0.99, P = .049) was negatively associated with activity avoidance. Of CRS symptom burden/SNOT-22 subdomains, only the emotional/psychological subdomain score (OR = 1.28, 95% CI, 1.12-1.46, P < .001) was associated with activity avoidance., Conclusion: Younger age and the conscientiousness personality trait were associated with activity avoidance in CRS patients. Of CRS-associated symptomatology, sadness and embarrassment were associated with activity avoidance. This article presents abstracts about geriatrics, ethics, and the quality of life, including assessments of decisional capacity in cognitively impaired subjects, the role of hospice and market factors in late hospice referrals, and a description of a memory and organizational aid to improve research consent in persons with Alzheimer's disease.

Objective: To determine the impact of occupational therapy (OT) on the self‐management of function, pain, fatigue, and lived experience for people living with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods: Five databases and gray literature were searched up to June 30, 2022. Three reviewers screened titles and abstracts, with two independently extracting and assessing full texts using the Cochrane risk of bias (quantitative) and Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (qualitative) tools to assess study quality. Studies were categorized into four intervention types. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) (quantitative) and GRADE‐ Confidence in Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative research (qualitative) were used to assess the quality of evidence for each intervention type. Results: Of 39 eligible papers, 29 were quantitative (n = 2,029), 4 qualitative (n = 50), and 6 mixed methods (n = 896). Good evidence supports patient education and behavior change programs for improving pain and function, particularly group sessions of joint protection education, but these do not translate to long‐term improvements for RA (>24 months). Comprehensive OT had mixed evidence (limited to home OT and an arthritis gloves program), whereas limited evidence was available for qualitative insights, splints and assistive devices, and self‐management for fatigue. Conclusion: Although patient education is promising for self‐managing RA, no strong evidence was found to support OT programs for self‐managing fatigue or patient experience and long‐term effectiveness. More research is required on lived experience, and the long‐term efficacy of self‐management approaches incorporating OT, particularly timing programs to meet the individual's conditional needs (i.e., early or established RA) to build on the few studies to date. According to the World Health Organization, between 2000 and 2050, the proportion of the world's population over 60 will double, from 11% to 22%. In absolute numbers, this age group will increase from 605 million to 2 billion in the course of half a century. It is a reality that most of them prefer to live alone, so it is necessary to look for mechanisms and tools that will help them to improve their autonomy. Although in recent years, we have been living in a veritable explosion of domotic systems that facilitate people's daily lives, it is also true that there are not many tools specifically aimed at this sector of the population. The aim of this paper is to present a potential solution to the monitoring of activity of daily living in the least intrusive way for people. In this case, anomalous patterns of daily activities will be detected by analysing the daily consumption of household appliances. People who live alone usually have a pattern of daily behaviour in the use of household appliances (coffee machine, microwave, television, etc.). A neuronal model is proposed for the detection of abnormal behaviour based on an autoencoder architecture. This solution will be compared with a variational autoencoder to analyse the improvements that can be obtained. The well‐known dataset called UK‐DALE will be used to validate the proposal. Background: Autistic children without intellectual disability will likely experience higher level language and communication difficulties. These may appear subtle, in that they are not immediately evident to those who do not know the child well and may not manifest in all environments. Because of this, the impact of such difficulties may be underestimated. This phenomenon has similarly attracted little research attention, meaning the extent to which subtle language and communication difficulties contribute to the needs of autistic individuals without intellectual disability may be underspecified in clinical services. Aims: To offer a detailed exploration of how relatively subtle language and communication difficulties impact on autistic children without intellectual disability and what strategies parents recognize can mediate those negative effects. Methods & Procedures: Twelve parents of autistic children from the target group (aged 8–14 years, attending mainstream school) were interviewed about how subtle language and communication difficulties impact their autistic child. Rich accounts were derived then analysed using thematic analysis. Eight of the children discussed had previously been interviewed independently in a parallel study. Comparisons are discussed in this paper. Outcomes & Results: Parents reported heterogeneous but pervasive higher level language and communication difficulties which universally impacted key areas of the children's function: peer relationships, developing independence and performance in education. Communication difficulties were also universally associated with negative emotional responses, social withdrawal and/or negative self‐perceptions. While parents identified a range of ad hoc strategies and naturally occurring opportunities that improved outcomes, there was little mention of the means to address primary language and communication difficulties. The current study showed a number of parallels with child accounts, demonstrating the benefits of collecting data from both sources in clinical and research investigations. However, parents were more concerned about longer term implications of language and communication difficulties and highlighted their impact on the child developing functional independence. Conclusions & Implications: Subtle language and communication difficulties, typically identified in this higher ability autistic group, can impact significantly on key areas of childhood function. Support strategies seem to be parent generated and inconsistently applied across individuals, without the benefit of coherent specialist services. Dedicated provision and resources targeting areas of functional need may be beneficial to the group. In addition, the commonly reported association between subtle language and communication difficulties and emotional well‐being indicates the need for greater exploration using empirical methods, and joined‐up clinical working between speech and language therapy and mental health services. What this paper adds: What is already known on the subject: There is now a wide understanding of how language and communication difficulties can impact the individual. However, where those difficulties are relatively subtle, for example, in children without intellectual disability and where difficulties are not immediately evident, less is known. Research has often speculated on how identified differences in higher level structural language and pragmatic difficulties might impact on the function of autistic children. However, to date dedicated exploration of this phenomenon is limited. The current author group explored first‐hand accounts of children. Corroborative evidence from parents of the same children would add further weight to understanding this phenomenon. What this paper adds to the existing knowledge: This study provides a detailed exploration of parents' perspective relating to the impact of language and communication difficulties on autistic children without intellectual disability. It provides corroborative detail that support child accounts of the same phenomenon, indicating the impact on peer relationships, school outcomes and emotional well‐being. Parents also report functional concerns around the child's ability to develop independence and this paper demonstrates how parents and children might deviate in their accounts, with parents reporting increased concerns around the longer term implications of early language and communication difficulties. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work?: Relatively subtle language and communication difficulties can have a significant impact on the lives of autistic children without intellectual disability. Greater service provision for this group is therefore indicated. Interventions could focus on areas of functional concern where language is implicated, for example, peer relationships, developing independence and school success. Additionally, the relationship between language and emotional well‐being points to further integration between speech and language therapy and mental health services. Differences found between parental and child reports highlight the need to collect data from both parties during clinical investigations. Background: In everyday conversations, a person with aphasia (PWA) compensates for their language impairment by relying on multimodal and material resources, as well as on their conversation partners. However, some social actions people perform in authentic interaction, proposing a joint future activity, for example, ordinarily rely on a speaker producing a multi‐word utterance. Thus, the language impairment connected to aphasia may impede the production of such proposals, consequently hindering the participation of PWAs in the planning of future activities. Aims: To investigate (1) how people with post‐stroke chronic aphasia construct proposals of joint future activities in everyday conversations compared with their familiar conversation partners (FCPs); and (2) how aphasia severity impacts on such proposals and their uptake. Methods & Procedures: Ten hours of video‐recorded everyday conversations from seven persons with mild and severe aphasia of varying subtypes and their FCPs were explored using conversation analysis. We identified 59 instances where either party proposed a joint future activity and grouped such proposals according to their linguistic format and sequential position. Data are in Finnish. Outcomes & Results: People with mild aphasia made about the same number of proposals as their FCPs and used similar linguistic formats to their FCPs when proposing joint future activities. This included comparable patterns associated with producing a time reference, which was routinely used when a proposal initiated a planning activity. Mild aphasia manifested itself as within‐turn word searches that were typically self‐repaired. In contrast, people with severe aphasia made considerably fewer proposals compared with their FCPs, the proposal formats being linguistically unidentifiable. This resulted in delayed acknowledgement of the PWAs' talk as a proposal. Conclusions & Implications: Mild aphasia appears not to impede PWAs' ability to participate in the planning of joint future activities, whereas severe aphasia is a potential limitation. To address this possible participatory barrier, we discuss clinical implications for both therapist‐led aphasia treatment and conversation partner training. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject: PWAs use multimodal resources to compensate for their language impairment in everyday conversations. However, certain social actions, such as proposing a joint future activity, cannot ordinarily be accomplished without language. What this paper adds to existing knowledge: The study demonstrates that proposing joint future activities is a common social action in everyday conversations between PWAs and their family members. People with mild aphasia used typical linguistic proposal formats, and aphasic word‐finding problems did not prevent FCPs from understanding the talk as a proposal. People with severe aphasia constructed proposals infrequently using their remaining linguistic resources, a newspaper connecting the talk to the future and the support from FCPs. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work?: We suggest designing aphasia treatment with reference to the social action of proposing a joint future activity. Therapist‐led treatment could model typical linguistic proposal formats, whereas communication partner training could incorporate FCP strategies that scaffold PWAs' opportunities to construct proposals of joint future activities. Abstract: This paper analyzes the reasons for differences in the estimated effect of retirement on health in previous studies. We investigate these differences by focusing on the analysis methods used by these studies. Using various health indexes, numerous researchers have examined the effects of retirement on health. However, there are no unified views on the impact of retirement on various health indexes. Consequently, we show that the choice of analysis method is one of the key factors in explaining why the estimated results of the effect of retirement on health differ. Moreover, we re‐estimate the effect of retirement on health by using a fixed analysis method controlling for individual heterogeneity and endogeneity of the retirement behavior. We analyze the effect of retirement on health parameters, such as cognitive function, self‐report of health, activities of daily living (ADL), depression, and body mass index in eight countries. We find that the effects of retirement on self‐report of health, depression, and ADL are positive in many of these countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Secure children's homes are locked institutions that deprive children of their liberty. The government are investing significantly in these homes, yet there remains a lack of clarity about their nature and purpose. Drawing on data generated through a substantial ethnography in one secure children's home in England, this paper uses Goffman's (1961) theorising as a conceptual lens to view the institution. It concludes that ambiguity and confusion about what these institutions are, and what they seek to achieve, impacts negatively on the experience of everyday life within. ABSTRACT The term ‘mental health crisis’ is a widely used concept in clinical practice and research, appearing prominently in mental health literature across healthcare and social science disciplines. Within these contexts, the term is frequently either left undefined or defined rather narrowly, confined to clinical observations or guidelines targeted at healthcare providers and negating the multifaceted nature of crisis as described by those with lived experience. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explore the characteristics of and provide a conceptual definition for the concept of ‘mental health crisis’. Rodgers' method of evolutionary concept analysis was employed and 34 articles, ranging from 1994 to 2021 and a variety of disciplines, were analysed. The results highlighted the contrast between clinically oriented surrogate terms and related concepts and those used by individuals with lived crisis experience. Antecedents of crisis included underlying vulnerabilities, relational dysfunction, collapse of life structure and struggles with activities of daily living. The concept's attributes encompassed the temporality of crisis, signs and symptoms of crisis, functional decline and crisis in family and caregivers. Finally, the consequences comprised looking inward for help, looking outward for help, and opportunities and dangers. This concept analysis serves as a foundational step in understanding ‘mental health crisis’ and its various dimensions, facilitating more nuanced discussions and interventions in the realm of mental healthcare. Introduction: Occupational therapy in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) can enhance residents' occupational engagement and wellbeing. However, industry reports suggest that occupational therapists in Australian RACFs have mostly provided physical therapies such as pain management via massage and not addressed residents' occupations. There is limited literature on what constitutes occupational therapists' practice in RACFs to inform policy and practice. The aim of this cross‐sectional survey was to explore practice patterns of occupational therapists working in Australian RACFs and influences on their practice. Methods: Occupational therapists working in Australian RACFs were invited from July 2019 to March 2020 to complete a self‐report online questionnaire via email and advertisements on industry websites, newsletters, and social media. The questionnaire asked therapists about their caseload, referrals, assessments, and interventions. Data were analysed descriptively and presented as frequencies and percentages. Results: A total of 214 occupational therapists completed the survey. Occupational therapists' daily practice largely focussed on pain management; other areas of practice included falls prevention, pressure care, and mobility. The Aged Care Funding Instrument in place at the time of the survey was identified as the leading factor influencing therapists' choice of assessments and interventions. Organisational policies and procedures were also perceived as key factors influencing occupational therapy practice. Conclusion: This paper highlights the influence of government funding and organisational policies in limiting occupational therapists' scope of practice and their ability to fully address the occupational needs of residents. Occupational therapists and the profession in general should be aware of factors in aged care funding models, and their application, that restrict occupational therapy practice and inhibit residents' function and advocate for change where needed. With the introduction of the Australian National Aged Care Classification funding model replacing Aged Care Funding Instrument, future research should explore potential changes to therapists practice following the implementation of the new funding model. Introduction: Daily living skills (DLS) are essential for an increased quality of life and autonomous living. DLS are a focus of occupational therapy practice; however, there has been no identified review of DLS acquisition in autistic adolescents or adults. A scoping review was undertaken of which the objective was to evaluate and synthesise the extent, range, and nature of research activity, and to identify research gaps in the existing literature as they relate to DLS acquisition and autistic adolescents and adults. Methods: A structured search of the literature was conducted. Studies published in English between 2011 and 2021 that included a focus on the acquisition of DLS in autistic adolescents and young adults were included. The titles and abstracts of 103 records were screened, and the full text of 53 records was reviewed. These reference lists were hand searched. Following this process, 25 papers were found to meet the inclusion criteria. Results: Findings indicate inconsistencies throughout the literature, with a lack of consensus on best practice methods, mediums, and/or tools to support optimal outcomes in terms of DLS acquisition for the autistic population. Themes related to (1) Generalisation of Skills Across Contexts, (2) Skill Maintenance, (3) Technology as a Teaching Method, (4) Participant and Family Perspectives, and (5) The Balance of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) focus in research were extracted from the reviewed literature. There is a strong consensus in the findings of the identified papers that autistic adolescents and young adults experience poorer outcomes in terms of DLS acquisition than non‐autistic peers, and peers with other developmental or intellectual disabilities. Conclusion: Future research is needed to fill these identified gaps and provide a clearer understanding on interventions to support optimal outcomes for autistic individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective To conduct a systematic appraisal of the published literature reviews related to the impact of cancer on everyday life. This theme was identified as the top priority area for research by participants in the Macmillan Listening Study, which was the first UK-wide public consultation exercise to identify patients' priorities for cancer research. Search strategy The top priority area was divided into ten sub-themes, and a modified systematic review was undertaken for each sub-theme using electronic searches. Inclusion criteria Literature review papers were included if they were written in English, involved patients diagnosed ≥18 years, any cancer types and published between 2000 and 2006. Data extraction and synthesis Two thousand and two hundred and fifty-two potentially eligible papers were identified. Abstracts were read by the first author and selected for inclusion in the review. Twenty percentages of the papers were also read independently by other authors. Sixty-two review papers were finally selected. Main results The systematic appraisal revealed that some sub-themes of the patient-identified priority area (e.g., how to support family members of cancer patients) were under-researched, while other sub-themes (e.g., anxiety and depression experienced by cancer patients) had been explored to some extent. Certain areas of research interest to patients were found to have been explored; however, their significance was limited by the quality of the research. Conclusion The systematic appraisal highlights important areas for future research and the need for more effective dissemination of study findings to wider audiences, including service users. Previous research has found that music brings back more vivid and emotional autobiographical memories than various other retrieval cues. However, such studies have often been low in ecological validity and constrained by relatively limited cue selection and predominantly young adult samples. Here, we compared music to food as cues for autobiographical memories in everyday life in young and older adults. In two separate four‐day periods, 39 younger (ages 18–34) and 39 older (ages 60–77) adults recorded their music‐ and food‐evoked autobiographical memories in paper diaries. Across both age groups, music triggered more frequent autobiographical memories, a greater proportion of involuntary memories, and memories rated as more personally important in comparison to food cues. Age differences impacted music‐ and food‐evoked memories similarly, with older adults consistently recalling older and less specific memories, which they rated as more positive, vivid, and rehearsed. However, young and older adults did not differ in the number or involuntary nature of their recorded memories. This work represents an important step in understanding the phenomenology of naturally occurring music‐evoked autobiographical memories across adulthood and provides new insights into how and why music may be a more effective trigger for personally valued memories than certain other everyday cues. Children's lives in the Covid‐19 pandemic were subject to unparalleled restrictions on and disruption to their daily lives. This paper explores the day‐to‐day relational, social participation and activities of young children in one East London borough in early 2021, as told through qualitative interviews with their parents. We adopt a social‐ecological model of children's development, a child rights focused understanding of well‐being, underpinned by an agentic view of both parents and children. We find that for some children, parents had additional time to spend with them and new activities were possible. But for others, particularly those living 'compressed lives' in low‐income households and over‐crowded accommodation with no outside space of their own, all three aspects—relational, participatory and activities—were significantly diminished. Objective: With little research investigating older Australians' experience of companion animal (pet) ownership or wildlife encounters, this paper focuses on the value of animals in their lives. Methods: Three online focus groups explored 103 older adults' lived experience of home and community, with this paper focused on interactions with animals—companion animals and wildlife. Results: Most (60%) had at least one pet, which brought love and joy into their lives. Reflexive thematic analysis identified three themes: pets as family; challenges of pet ownership; and connection to everyday wildlife and nature. Conclusions: In addition to valuing companion animals (typically cats and dogs), this research is among the first to show that some older people also develop ongoing relationships with local Australian wildlife, such as kookaburras, kangaroos, lizards and birds, which raises the possibility that fostering connections with wildlife may enhance well‐being. The paper examines the ways in which preschool children represent the spaces of their daily lives. It is based on the analysis of photographs taken by pupils from two kindergartens located in non‐privileged neighbourhoods of Athens. The children photographed the spaces where they live and move, and talked about their photos. The analysis maps these spaces and explores the social parameters (social class, ethnicity) that shape the children's relationship with private and public space. Thus, photographs become tools that provide a deeper understanding of the children's social worlds and highlight the importance of the social spaces where their practices and experiences are shaped. Obesity is a chronic disorder associated with high mortality rates and high morbidity. The risk of obesity is associated with certain personality traits (PTs). Some studies have found correlations among some PTs and gender. Additionally, obesity implies higher costs in daily living. The aim of this paper is to overcome this problem in the literature and estimate the association between PTs and obesity by taking into account the economic situation of the individual. This study employs data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). We focus on waves 5 and 6 of the ELSA with a sample of 6562 individuals. The results suggests that the traits of agreeableness (β=0.071,se=0.016,p<0.001) and openness (β=0.028,se:0.014,p<0.001) are positively and significantly associated with obesity. On the other hand, consciousness has a negative and statistically significant effect on obesity β=0.072,se:0.017,p<0.001. Results are robust to the inclusion/exclusion of different regressors. Satisfying daily life functioning is essential in mental healthcare. Standard assessments focus on symptoms and are designed to detect underlying vulnerabilities. However, they offer insufficient insight into patterns of contextual variability and resilience. Consequently, interventions are planned using incomplete information. The experience‐sampling method (ESM) is a structured moment‐to‐moment diary assessing the individual's affect, thoughts, perception and behaviour in the daily life context. ESM helps to understand variation in mental states (e.g., anxiety or sleeping problems) as adaptational processes in relation to contextual challenges (functional analysis). Although ESM has been extensively studied across psychological disorders, the adoption by mental health professionals and their patients remains limited because the 'how to' is unclear. This paper presents a practical guide for ESM application in routine clinical care. It integrates empirical knowledge with expert experiences and provides real‐world examples and recommendations for successful implementation. The guide comprises how to engage and motivate patients and how to customize assessments to the patient's needs. It also includes instructions to interpret results and create an atmosphere of shared decision‐making. Experience‐sampling technology has merits for patients with various mental health complaints and across healthcare settings, although the exact use and implementation may vary depending on the individual case. Background: In dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), limitations in linguistic and cognitive abilities may lead to difficulties in participating in conversations. The conversational outcome is also dependent on how the conversation partner adjusts to potential communicative challenges. Aims: This study explored resources and barriers in communication in DLB. Methods & Procedures: Linguistic and cognitive function was explored through standard clinical testing. The dyad's perception of function in daily life was explored through semi‐structured interviews analysed with content analysis. Interactional patterns and participation in casual conversation was analysed with conversation analysis. Outcome & Results: The results show how the husband diagnosed with DLB performed with high scores across most cognitive and linguistic test tasks. The interview data, however, revealed how both he and his wife experienced significant challenges regarding, for example, conversational tempo, as well as negative feelings relating to adjusting to these conversational changes. The interactional data from the casual conversation revealed, among other patterns, how the wife engaged in most of the storytelling in the conversation. The husband contributed details when his wife asked for help, or he acknowledged a faulty or missing detail in his wife's storyline. Thus, they both oriented to the husband's competence in monitoring and keeping track of the conversational content, despite challenges in taking the floor. Conclusions & Implications: A holistic picture of communication in DLB necessitates the use of different evaluation approaches. Both monological (e.g., test tasks revealing cognitive and linguistic resources) and dialogical information sources (e.g., observations of conversations revealing adjustments in conversations), as well as the perceptions of those engaging in everyday conversations (i.e., people with DLB and their conversation partner(s)), need to be evaluated when assessing resources and barriers in communication. What this paper adds: What is already known on the subject: It is well‐known that dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) affects language and cognition. In conversations, persons with DLB experience difficulties in turn‐taking, topic initiation, entering conversations and keeping up with the conversational tempo. What this study adds: This study sheds light on conversations in one dyad where the husband has been diagnosed with DLB. The results from three different information sources (testing of language and cognition, interviews and a video‐recorded conversation) reveal patterns of resources and barriers that at first appear to contradict each other. However, the contradictions can be resolved when these discrepancies are examined in light of the differences in task structure, in terms of, for example, predetermined topics and how turn‐taking is managed. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work?: In order to gather a holistic picture of a person's conversational abilities, clinicians need to include information from both monological tasks (e.g., linguistic testing) as well as dialogical tasks (e.g., video recordings from conversation). The results also need to be evaluated in light of all conversation partners' perspectives on function in daily life. Aim: To compare the participation attendance and involvement of children and young people with and without cerebral palsy (CP) in a low‐resource area of Uganda. Method: Eighty‐two children and young people with CP aged 6 to 22 years (49 males, 33 females) and 81 age‐ and sex‐matched peers without CP (6 to 22 years; 48 males, 33 females) participated in this population‐based, cross‐sectional study. Data on attendance and involvement in 20 home and community activities were obtained using Picture My Participation, an instrument intended to measure participation in children with disabilities, particularly in low‐ and middle‐income countries. Non‐parametric statistical methods were used to assess between‐group differences. Effect size estimates were calculated. Results: Pooled attendance across all activities was lower in children and young people with CP than in children and young people without CP (p < 0.001) and for each activity item (p = 0.004 to p < 0.001). The effect sizes for each activity were 0.2 to 0.7. Between‐group differences were larger for community activities than for home activities. Pooled involvement across all activities was less in the group with CP (p < 0.001) and for each activity (p = 0.014 to p < 0.001). The effect sizes for each activity were 0.2 to 0.5. Children and young people in Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels I and II had higher attendance (p < 0.001) and involvement (p = 0.023) than those in GMFCS levels III to V. Interpretation: Participation of young people living with CP in Uganda was restricted, especially for community activities. There is a need to identify context‐specific participation barriers and develop strategies to overcome them. This paper presents an account of how children's sense of agency is produced in machinic assemblages. The ethnographic data used in this study originated in one elementary school classroom. By utilising children's own expressions of their agency and by examining the machinic assemblages in which these expressions were produced, we demonstrate that school policies are not merely a background for schools' mundane practices. Background: The idea of computational thinking is underpinned by the belief that anyone can learn and use the underlying concepts of computer science to solve everyday problems. However, most studies on the topic have investigated the development of computational thinking through programming activities, which are cognitively demanding. There is a dearth of evidence on how computational thinking augments everyday problem solving when it is decontextualized from programming. Objectives: In this study, we examined how computational thinking, when untangled from the haze of programming, is demonstrated in everyday problem solving, and investigated the features of such solvable problems. Methods: Using a multiple case study approach, we tracked how seven university students used computational thinking to solve the everyday problem of a route planning task as part of an 8‐week‐long Python programming course. Results and Conclusions: Computational thinking practices are latent in everyday problems, and intentionally structuring everyday problems is valuable for discovering the applicability of computational thinking. Decomposition and abstraction are prominent computational thinking components used to simplify everyday problem solving. Implications: It is important to strike a balance between the correctness of algorithms and simplification of the process of everyday problem solving. Aim: Dependence for toileting is the most problematic aspect for patients after a stroke. However, the relative difficulty of each component of toileting and the predictors for independent performance of these activities are unknown. We investigated these issues in stroke patients using Boltzmann sigmoid and generalized linear modeling. Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional correlation study, including 107 adult inpatients, hospitalized for a stroke. We assessed the activity components of toileting, as well as evaluated physical impairment using the Fugl-Meyer Assessment, impairments in balance using the Berg Balance Scale, cognitive impairments using the Mini-Mental State Examination and the presence or absence of unilateral spatial neglect or aphasia. Results: Boltzmann sigmoid modeling showed that the total scores required to obtain a response at 50% of the maximal value for the required components of toileting ranged between 2.691 and 34.962 points, for the components of "wearing pants" and "cutting the toilet paper," respectively. A generalized linear model showed that the Berg Balance Scale score was a significant predictor for independent performance on most component activities of toileting. Conclusions: The component of toileting that was easiest to carry out was cutting the toilet paper, and the most difficult was wearing pants. Balance impairment was an independent predictor of independent toileting after stroke. This detailed toileting assessment enabled us to document the most difficult components of toileting, and to assess the motor and process skills required for independent toileting. Background Within contemporary medical practice, Parkinson's disease ( PD) is treated using a biomedical, neurological approach, which although bringing numerous benefits can struggle to engage with how people with PD experience the disease. A bio-psycho-social approach has not yet been established in PD; however, bio-psycho-social approaches adopted within dementia care practice could bring significant benefit to PD care. Methods This paper summarises existing bio-psycho-social models of dementia care and explores how these models could also usefully be applied to care for PD. Specifically, this paper adapts the bio-psycho-social model for dementia developed by Spector and Orrell (), to suggest a bio-psycho-social model, which could be used to inform routine care in PD. Results Drawing on the biopsychosocial model of Dementia put forward by Spector and Orrell (), this paper explores the application of a bio-psycho-social model of PD. This model conceptualises PD as a trajectory, in which several interrelated fixed and tractable factors influence both PD's symptomology and the various biological and psychosocial challenges individuals will face as their disease progresses. Using an individual case study, this paper then illustrates how such a model can assist clinicians in identifying suitable interventions for people living with PD. Conclusion This model concludes by discussing how a bio-psycho-social model could be used as a tool in PD's routine care. The model also encourages the development of a theoretical and practical framework for the future development of the role of the PD specialist nurse within routine practice. Implications for practice A biopsychosocial approach to Parkinson's Disease provides an opportunity to move towards a holistic model of care practice which addresses a wider range of factors affecting people living with PD. The paper puts forward a framework through which PD care practice can move towards a biopsychosocial perspective. Currently dominant in medical discourse, the concept of self‐management sees the responsibility for health and illness shift from the state to the individual. However, while this emphasis on individual responsibility and management has burgeoned, the role and status of partners and other family members in the management of chronic illness remains under‐theorised. While self‐management privileges individual responsibility for the management of chronic illness, the role of partners remains unclear. This paper utilises data from a study of heterosexual couples' experiences of living with the chronic gynaecological condition endometriosis to explore how male partners engage in its day‐to‐day management. In all, 22 couples participated in in‐depth, semi‐structured interviews with each partner interviewed separately (n = 44). Data were analysed thematically and dyadically, informed by an interpretivist relational approach. The paper utilises the concept of healthwork to describe the illness work, everyday life work, biographical work and emotion work men engaged in. The paper demonstrates how the conceptual value of healthwork is enhanced by incorporating an analysis of the emotional effort required in managing chronic illness. The paper illustrates the value of investigating the role of partners in managing chronic illness to provide a fuller account of the distributed and relational nature of healthwork. Background: Achieving activity participation goals is a key factor in quality of life (QOL) for people with aphasia (PWA), but expressing participation goals can be difficult for many of them. Proxy reports by caregivers may not accurately reflect the interests and participation goals of PWA, and discrepancies in these goals between PWA and their caregivers may affect QOL, based on the assumption that caregivers' awareness of their loved ones' unique participation goals may be important to increasing PWA activity participation. Aims: To examine everyday activities valued by PWA using the Life Interests and Values (LIV) Cards; to measure congruence between PWA and their caregivers on life participation goals; and to measure how congruence of PWA–caregiver participation goals related to QOL. Methods & Procedures: A convenience sample of 25 PWA completed the LIV Card assessment and the Stroke Aphasia Quality of Life Scale—39 to assess participation goals and QOL. Participation goals were also evaluated with respect to age, time post‐onset and aphasia severity. A total of 12 caregivers were administered the LIV Cards to calculate agreement between PWA–proxy activity reports and the relationship between agreement and QOL. Outcomes & Results: PWA endorsed wanting to participate more in a wide range of activities, with common interests in walking/running, going to the beach and eating out, among others. PWA–caregiver activity agreement was fair to moderate with point‐to‐point agreement averaging 70%. However, no relationship between degree of congruence in PWA–proxy pairs and QOL was found. Conclusions & Implications: PWA have a variety of activity participation goals that can be integrated into intervention plans. Dependence on proxy respondents should be reduced as much as possible to support self‐determination for PWA. Background: Cognitive‐communication disorders (CCDs) are common in the traumatic brain injury (TBI) population. Despite this, there has been limited research that explores the long‐term impacts of reduced cognitive‐communication functioning on daily life for this population. Aims: To identify the long‐term impacts of cognitive‐communication impairment as reported by adults with TBI and their significant others. Methods & Procedures: A qualitative descriptive approach grounded in phenomenology was used. Semi‐structured, one‐on‐one interviews were conducted with adults with CCDs following TBI (n = 16) and their significant others (n = 12) to explore their lived experiences. Outcomes & Results: Reflexive thematic analysis revealed an overarching theme of 'The pervasive and unyielding impacts of cognitive‐communication changes on daily life following TBI'. Within this overarching theme, three subthemes were identified: (1) self‐awareness of communication changes; (2) fatigue; and (3) self‐identity and life roles. Conclusion & Implications: The findings from this study highlight the long‐term negative impacts of reduced cognitive‐communication functioning on daily life. Health professionals supporting this population should consider ways to reduce the significant impact CCDs have on the lives of adults following TBI and their significant others. In addition, the findings highlight the importance of long‐term rehabilitation services following TBI, with further research needed that explores how these services can be optimised. What this paper adds: What is already known on this subject: Cognitive‐communication disorders (CCDs) affect the majority of adults who experience moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and encompass any component of communication that is affected by cognition. The hallmark characteristic of CCDs are breakdowns that affect social communication skills as well as cognitive‐linguistic deficits. Combined, these can have dramatic implications for a person's quality of life, their level of independence, employment opportunities and social participation. There has been limited research to date that explores the long‐term impacts of CCDs on the lives of adults following TBI. Further research that explores these impacts is needed to improve the support services and rehabilitation models of care available for this population. During the COVID‐19 pandemic, families experienced new challenges related to reorganizing living spaces and the need to renegotiate domestic and care roles. This paper aims to understand how Italian families have reacted to this situation with respect to psychological well‐being, the management of domestic and care activities and solidarity networks of care. The participants were 560 Italian subjects who reported having a parental role. The protocol included a measure of well‐being (the General Health Questionnaire‐12) and some questions related to the time dedicated to domestic activities or to caring for people, the perception of conflict within the family and solidarity networks of care. The data underline how mothers continued to devote more time to home and care activities than fathers, despite the presence of both partners at home during the lockdown. The results also indicate that mothers participated to a greater extent than fathers in solidarity activities, confirming that this dimension is linked to gender. Furthermore, fathers and mothers perceived a lower condition of well‐being in relation to the pre‐pandemic period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This paper aims at examining the clinical characteristics of ischemic stroke patients with different levels of prestroke functional dependency, their long-term outcome, and determinants of five-year mortality., Materials and Methods: We describe demographics, comorbidity, treatment, as well as long-term mortality, and functional status of 5899 prestroke-dependent ischemic stroke patients stratified by dependency level and compared to a concurrent cohort of 14 148 prestroke-independent patients. The study was based on 2016 survey data from Riksstroke, the Swedish national stroke register, and patients were followed up at three months, 12 months, and either at three or five years. We used Cox regression for mortality predictor analysis and multiple imputation was performed to minimize bias from loss to follow-up., Results: With increasing level of prestroke dependency, comorbidity burden was higher, drug prescription lower, and prognosis less favorable. At three years, the proportion that had died or deteriorated were 82.6%, 87.5%, and 86.3% in moderate, moderately severe, and severe dependency, respectively. In moderate dependency, prognosis was relatively favorable: Three-month mortality was half of that seen in severe dependency (25.3% versus 49.6%). Differences in overall outcome between groups of varying prestroke functional dependency level were statistically significant (P < .05) at all follow-up time points., Conclusions: There was great heterogeneity between groups of different level of prestroke dependency; those of moderate dependency had a relatively favorable prognosis. Women with endometriosis may experience uncertainty owing to the characteristics of the disease, including vague symptom patterns, delayed diagnosis, and long‐term management with no cure. However, women use various coping strategies to adapt to the uncertainty caused by their endometriosis. This descriptive qualitative study explored the coping experiences of women with endometriosis to reduce their uncertainty about the disease and to achieve successful adaptation to their lives with endometriosis. By using convenience and purposive sampling methods, qualitative data were collected from 14 women in South Korea (mean age = 37.7 years, age range = 27–54 years), who were diagnosed with endometriosis through laparoscopy or open surgery. All interview data were thematically analyzed. Four themes were identified as adaptive coping experiences: (1) gaining self‐control over the ambiguous disease; (2) regaining the daily routines destroyed by the disease; (3) being emotionally supported and expressing oneself when feeling unsupported by society; and (4) taking an active role in one's treatment plan by being self‐directed. Patients' sense of self‐control and self‐directedness regarding the disease and the treatment process were important to adapt to life with endometriosis. In addition, regaining stable daily routines as well as being emotionally supported were critical for decreasing their uncertainty. This paper has widespread implications, including the need for training or a continuing education program for health professionals to enhance their competencies when caring for women with endometriosis and the need for social efforts to increase awareness of the disease. Background and Purpose: There are no reports regarding the effect of Lee Silverman Voice Treatment® BIG (LSVT® BIG) on standing balance ability evaluated using quantitative assessment. This case report aimed to describe and evaluate the influence of LSVT® BIG on the center of pressure (COP) trajectory in a patient with Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods: Although this paper focused on one case, quantitative assessment on the effect of LSVT® BIG on standing balance ability was performed. A 67‐year‐old woman patient diagnosed with PD at age 59, with a Hoehn and Yahr stage 3 disability severity, underwent a 4‐weeks supervised LSVT® BIG program. The total distances of the COP trajectory (two‐dimensional [2D] horizontal plane, anterior‐posterior [AP] direction, and medial‐lateral [ML] direction), and the mean COP velocity for each direction, postural stability, and posture subsections of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) Part 3 were assessed at pre‐ and post‐intervention. Results: The total distances of the COP trajectory, mean COP velocities, and scores of postural stability and posture subsections of the UPDRS Part 3 improved after intervention (from 124.6 to 76.6 cm [2D], 89.4 to 57.7 cm [AP], 77.4 to 38.5 cm [ML]; 4.0 to 2.6 cm/s [2D], 3.0 to 1.9 cm/s [AP], 2.6 to 1.3 cm/s [ML]; and 3 to 0, and 3 to 2, respectively). Discussion: LSVT® BIG may be effective in improving the total distance of the COP trajectory, mean COP velocity, and both postural stability and posture subsections of the UPDRS Part 3 in the presented PD case. Background and Purpose: Regaining functional independence and independent living is challenging in hospitalized geriatric patients. Different from community dwelling and institutionalized older people, geriatric patients on rehabilitation wards generally receive more frequent and structured physiotherapy with the primary aim to discharge them to their home or place of residence. There is a paucity of evidence concerning the structure and components of physiotherapy programs to improve functional performance in this particular group. In this paper, we describe how we developed the Geriatric Activation Program Pellenberg (GAPP) based on patients' needs and available literature. Methods: We searched the literature on physiotherapy interventions focusing on the core components for improvement of functional performance: strength, balance, function, (gait)speed, coordination, and endurance training. Based on physiotherapist staffing and physiotherapy time allocated to each patient, we organized the practical, daily delivery of the program. Results: GAPP is a 5‐day program, repeated weekly, delivered by physiotherapists and physiotherapy students. Each day, one or a combination of two to three different core components of functional performance is trained intensively in 45‐min sessions. A set of standard exercises is constantly adjusted to each patients' capacity. On day 5, there is a mix of these core elements in a group session (e.g., chair‐dance, table tennis, karate) and the Berg Balance Scale is completed to evaluate progress. Conclusion: GAPP is a multicomponent physiotherapy program for hospitalized patients on a geriatric rehabilitation ward, aimed at improving functional performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims This paper aims to report carers' perceptions of the impact of home telehealth on the provision of care and the sustainability of home telehealth use. Method This paper is reporting on a sample of 15 carers who were involved in the telehealth arm of a larger controlled trial. Results Carers primarily believed that telehealth helped to provide better care. None of the carers had organised, or planned to organise, ongoing telehealth monitoring beyond the study. The main reason given for non-sustained usage was the belief that the person they cared for no longer required, or would benefit from, the monitoring. Conclusion As the person being cared for was a frail older person with multiple chronic diseases and a history of recent hospitalisation, the non-sustained usage of home telehealth by carers raises questions about what is needed to ensure sustainability of use; this requires further investigation. Social interactions through online social media have become a daily routine of many, and the number of those whose real world (offline) and online lives have become intertwined is continuously growing. As such, the interplay of individuals' online and offline activities has been the subject of numerous research studies, the majority of which explored the impact of people's online actions on their offline activities. The opposite direction of impact—the effect of real‐world activities on online actions—has also received attention but to a lesser degree. To contribute to the latter form of impact, this paper reports on a quasi‐experimental design study that examined the presence of causal relations between real‐world activities of online social media users and their online emotional expressions. To this end, we have collected a large dataset (over 17K users) from Twitter and Foursquare, and systematically aligned user content on the two social media platforms. Users' Foursquare check‐ins provided information about their offline activities, whereas the users' expressions of emotions and moods were derived from their Twitter posts. Since our study was based on a quasi‐experimental design, to minimize the impact of covariates, we applied an innovative model of computing propensity scores. Our main findings can be summarized as follows: (a) users' offline activities do impact their affective expressions, both of emotions and moods, as evidenced in their online shared textual content; (b) the impact depends on the type of offline activity and if the user embarks on or abandons the activity. Aim This study aimed to explore the potential of an inclusive and fully integrated measurement system for the Activities component of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), incorporating four classical scales, including the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), and a Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT). Methods Three hundred patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) answered relevant questions from four questionnaires. Rasch analysis was performed to create an item bank using this item pool. A further 100 RA patients were recruited for a CAT application. Both real and simulated CATs were applied and the agreement between these CAT-based scores and 'paper-pencil' scores was evaluated with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Anchoring strategies were used to obtain a direct translation from the item bank common metric to the HAQ score. Results Mean age of 300 patients was 52.3 ± 11.7 years; disease duration was 11.3 ± 8.0 years; 74.7% were women. After testing for the assumptions of Rasch analysis, a 28-item Activities item bank was created. The agreement between CAT-based scores and paper-pencil scores were high (ICC = 0.993). Using those HAQ items in the item bank as anchoring items, another Rasch analysis was performed with HAQ-8 scores as separate items together with anchoring items. Finally a conversion table of the item bank common metric to the HAQ scores was created. Conclusion A fully integrated and inclusive health assessment system, illustrating the Activities component of the ICF, was built to assess RA patients. Aim: To examine the efficacy of Hand-Arm Bimanual Intensive Therapy (HABIT) on daily functioning, unimanual dexterity, and bimanual performance of children with bilateral cerebral palsy (CP) compared with customary care.Method: Forty-one children with bilateral CP, aged 4 to 16 years, classified in levels I to III of the Manual Ability Classification System, were randomly assigned to HABIT (90h) (n=21) or to customary care (4.5h) (n=20). Participants' daily functioning (Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory [PEDI], Canadian Occupational Performance Measure [COPM]), unimanual dexterity (Jebsen-Taylor Test of Hand Function, Box and Blocks Test [BBT]), and bimanual performance (Both Hands Assessment) were assessed pre-, post-, and 6 months after the intervention. Linear mixed-effects models were used for inferential analysis.Results: Children participating in HABIT showed greater improvements in daily functioning (COPMperformance : χ12 =9.50, p<0.01; COPMsatisfaction : χ12 =5.07, p<0.05; PEDIfunctional skills : χ12 =6.81, p<0.01; PEDIcaregiver assistance : χ12 =6.23, p<0.05) and in the dexterity of the dominant hand (BBT: χ12 =3.99, p<0.05) compared with children maintaining customary care. Group or time effects did not explain any variance in bimanual performance or in the dexterity of the non-dominant hand.Interpretation: HABIT may be beneficial for children with bilateral CP, with benefits evidenced for daily functioning outcomes.What This Paper Adds: Hand-Arm Bimanual Intensive Therapy (HABIT) improved daily functioning of children with bilateral cerebral palsy (CP). Aim: The purpose of this scoping review was to describe and map the literature available on the participation of young people (0-21y) with disabilities and/or chronic conditions living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).Method: A systematic search and selection process identified 78 publications. Descriptive data were extracted using a data-charting form, and studies were mapped using the family of participation-related constructs framework.Results: The findings demonstrated that, although the published evidence is steadily increasing, the participation research on this vulnerable population is still either absent or very scarce in the majority of LMICs, and very little is known about the participation of children with chronic health conditions. Most studies included in this review focused on attendance or 'being there'.Interpretation: Although attendance is an important aspect, more needs to be done to understand children's experiences or involvement while attending, thus capturing both dimensions of participation.What This Paper Adds: There is an increasing trend in research on participation patterns of children with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries. Objective: A concept elicitation, cognitive debriefing, and usability study was undertaken to: (1) explore migraine symptoms and day‐to‐day impacts; (2) determine the comprehensiveness and comprehensibility of the previously developed 24‐Hour Migraine Quality of Life Questionnaire electronic patient‐reported outcome (24‐Hr MQoLQ ePRO) items, and the appropriateness and understanding of the recall period, response options, and instructions; and (3) assess the usability on an electronic hand‐held device. Methods: Eleven United States English‐speaking people with episodic migraine were recruited to participate in one‐on‐one interviews, which followed methods appropriate for concept elicitation, cognitive debriefing, and usability testing. Interviews were audio‐recorded, transcribed, and analyzed following the constant comparative method. Results: Participants had a mean age of 42 years, and 8 were female. Through spontaneous mention or probing, all concepts of the 24‐Hr MQoLQ ePRO were endorsed by a majority of the participants. Cognitive interviewing confirmed the 24‐Hr MQoLQ ePRO instructions were clear, meaningful, and important to assess as symptoms and day‐to‐day impacts experienced as a result of migraine. Overall impressions of the ePRO device were overwhelmingly favorable, and the ePRO device was preferred to paper and pencil by all participants. Participant responses regarding the level of headache pain that would be acceptable in order to continue to go about daily activities ranged from 3 to 6, on a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being "no headache" and 10 being "the worst headache." Conclusions: The 24‐Hr MQoLQ ePRO is content‐valid and appropriate for inclusion in future acute treatment for migraine studies designed to measure the symptoms and health‐related quality of life of migraine. This paper presents a comparison between algorithms (Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF (ORB) and Aruco) for the detection of fiducial markers placed throughout a smart environment. A series of activities of daily living (ADL) were conducted while monitoring a first-person perspective of the situation; this was achieved through the usage of the Google Glass platform. Fiducial markers were employed, as a means to assist with the detection of specific objects of interest, within the environment. Each marker was assigned unique Identification (ID) and was used to identify the object. Three activities were performed by a participant within the environment. On subsequent trials of the solution, lighting conditions were modified to assess fiducial marker detection rates on a frame-by-frame basis. This paper presents the results from this investigation, detailing performance measure for each object detected under various lighting conditions, motion blur and distance from the objects. An intelligent system was developed to specifically consider distance estimation in order to aid with the filtering out of false interactions. A linear filtering method was applied along with a fuzzy membership function to estimate the degree of user interaction, which assists in removing false positives generated by the occupant. Background and Purpose This paper aimed to select studies evaluating botulinum toxin (BoNT) intervention applied for upper-limb spasticity and from these identify outcome measures that are a) applicable in the hemiparetic upper limb and b) include evaluation of functional outcome in the context of everyday real-life activities. Methods A systematic search was used to identify peer-reviewed papers evaluating BoNT intervention for focal spasticity management in the upper limb. From these papers, outcome evaluation methods were identified, which attempted to capture 'active function' improvement (functional use of the hand and/or arm) or passive function improvement (care for the affected limb, for example to maintain hygiene and dress or support the arm). Results The search yielded 411 studies. Seventy papers were identified following a final review of the abstracts as potentially including evaluation of functional outcome (active and/or passive function). Following the review of the papers, a total of 22 studies contained specific methods for evaluating functional outcome in the upper limb. Discussion Three different patient-focused methods to evaluate functional outcome following focal spasticity intervention using BoNT have been identified: 1) use of patient report of upper-limb items (including the Leeds Adult Spasticity Impact Scale and the Disability Assessment Scale), 2) use of a composite measure of function incorporating functional items and 3) Goal Attainment Scaling. None of these methods fully address evaluation of functional outcome in this context but may go some way to recording these improvements. An alternative or complementary measure, recently published, is the Arm Activity Measure for evaluation of active and passive function in this context. The Arm Activity Measure addresses active and passive function changes from the perspective of patients and carers and has been developed for application in this context. Background: Adults with an intellectual disability (ID) have much lower rates of employment than their counterparts without intellectual disability, which increases their risk of poverty and social exclusion. Differential treatment of people with intellectual disability in welfare and training policies suggests an expectation they will be passive welfare recipients rather than productive employees. Methods: This paper aims to examine occupational activities by older people with intellectual disability in Ireland, exploring factors influencing outcomes using data from the IDS‐TILDA study (n = 708). Results: Most people were unemployed but engaged in regular occupational activity. Occupational activity was associated with better emotional/mental health. Activities of Daily Living (ADL) functioning was associated with an active occupational status, while social supports most strongly predicted high occupational engagement across a range of activities. Conclusions: A focus on the individual meaning derived from a broad range of engagement may better support people with intellectual disabilities to benefit from regular occupational activity. Aim: To develop a detailed priority list of family-centred rehabilitation goals on the activity level within the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) chapters d4 'Mobility' and d5 'Self-care' in a paediatric population with a broad range of health conditions.Method: Twenty-two months after implementing a systematic, family-centred, goal-setting process, the rehabilitation goals of 212 inpatients were retrospectively allocated to the most detailed level of ICF categories by two independent researchers. The overall frequencies of these goals were calculated and stratified by health condition, functional independence, and age.Results: Ninety-three females and 119 males were included in the study (mean age 10y 9mo, SD 4y 5mo, range 2y 1mo-21y 5mo). The five most frequent rehabilitation goals were ICF codes d4500 'Walking short distances' (11%), d4200 'Transferring oneself while sitting' (9%), d5400 'Putting on clothes' (7%), d451 'Going up and down stairs' (6%), and d4153 'Maintaining a sitting position' (5%). These top goals varied in the subgroups with regard to the underlying health condition, functional independence, and age.Interpretation: The findings of this study are not generalizable due to the large heterogeneity in priorities. However, they can be used to incorporate families' needs into future research designs and the development of new technologies.What This Paper Adds: Walking short distances is the most frequent mobility/self-care goal of paediatric rehabilitation. The top goals depend on health condition, functional independence, and age. Priorities vary considerably between children undergoing rehabilitation.
