The 2019 outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) in Wuhan (Hubei province of China) has given rise to a pandemic spread of virus, more than 240 million incidences and a death toll larger than 5 million people. COVID‐19 has set off large efforts in research, therapy and patient care, as well as public and private debates in every imaginable form. A number of scientists used the publication platforms provided by the Federation of the European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) to present their research data, reviews, opinions and other contributions relating to COVID‐19 and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2). Here, I highlight the recent COVID‐19 papers which have been published and collected in a Virtual Issue in FEBS Letters, and discuss their implications towards understanding the molecular, biochemical and cellular mechanisms of SARS‐CoV‐2 infections, vaccine development and antiviral discovery strategies. Predicting carbon prices is crucial for the growth of China's carbon trading industry. This paper proposes a residual correction model that considers multiple influencing factors. First, the best historical data and main external factors input by the model are determined by using the partial autocorrelation function and Spearman correlation analysis, and the carbon price forecasting index system is constructed. Second, the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is utilized to determine the optimal parameters of the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and the WOA‐XGBoost model is built to perform preliminary carbon price forecasts and obtain the residual series. Finally, the carbon price residual series undergoes decomposition into multiple components utilizing the complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition for subsequent forecasting and the aggregation of outcomes. Experiments are conducted to predict two carbon trading markets in Hubei and Guangzhou, and a feature importance analysis is performed. The results indicate that the proposed hybrid model consistently outperforms the comparative models in terms of prediction accuracy. Furthermore, it is revealed that historical carbon prices and European Union carbon prices are the key factors influencing the prediction of carbon market prices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Yeast extract (YE) is a kind of umami additives used in fermented condiments, it also has special yeasty flavour (YF), which is not widely accepted by some consumers. In this paper, the technology of mixed microbial transformation was applied to eliminate or cover up YF during mixed fermentation. FG10, which is produced by Hubei Angel Yeast Co. Ltd, is a kind of YE that has the distinctive YF and has been applied to the market. It had good sensory evaluation after 6 h with Saccharomycopsis fibuligera and Lactococcus lactis. At 6 h, compared with single fermentation, the number of bacteria of L. lactis was enhanced by 34.28%, and the number of bacteria of S. fibuligera was reduced by 47.93%. The yeasty flavoured substances propionic acid and butyric acid were completely removed. The result of GC‐MS showed that acetal, phenyl acetaldehyde, 2,4‐dimethylbenzaldehyde, benzaldehyde, isoamyl alcohol, 5‐methyl‐2‐furan methanol, phenylethanol were generated or increased. Furthermore, the amino acids of YE were significantly different after fermentation by different microorganisms (P < 0.05), The flavour compounds and amino acids in YE before and after fermentation had closely correlation (r = 0.94), the consumption of amino acids in mixed fermentation promoted the variety of corresponding flavour compounds, which boosted the formation of free YF YE. In addition, taste substances lactic acid generated 6.27 ± 0.115 g L−1 and nucleotides improved 15.05%, which were beneficial to natural YF free seasoning with YE as raw material. The relationship between labor migration and the medical benefits of migrant children (MC) has long been a focus of empirical research. Based on the dynamic monitoring data of the migrant population in Hubei Province by the National Health and Family Planning Commission of China in 2014 and the characteristic data of prefecture‐level cities, this paper studies the impact of labor migration on the medical benefits of MC. The major findings of this paper are that in China, due to the huge spatial differences in medical services, the migration of labor to urban areas with better public services helps to improve the medical benefits of women during pregnancy and lying‐in period, and at the same time significantly enhances the medical benefits of the MC. In contrast, due to the relative lag of the reform in social security system such as household registration and medical care, in the long run, labor migration is not conducive to the improvement of the medical benefits of MC. Based on the above findings, this paper suggests that in the short‐term, more public resources should be allocated to the urban medical supply, especially at the primary level, and in the long‐term, the adjustment of public policies should be aimed at eliminating urban‐rural differences. Wushi Powder initially was used as medicine for typhoid fever in ancient China. In the Wei, Jin and Northern and Southern dynasties, Wushi Powder became fashionable among the upper classes. However, because of the limitation of documentary evidence, it is difficult to find the true identity of Wushi Powder. Little archaeological evidence has been discovered to date, and no scientific analysis have been performed for Wushi Powder. This paper focuses on the suspected items of Wushi Powder from the Xiangyang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology. X‐ray diffraction (XRD), X‐ray fluorescence (XRF), polarized optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and atomic fluorescence spectrophotometry (AFS) were employed to characterize the compositions. The results show that the granular suspected items consist of quartz (SiO2), magnesium calcite [(Mg0.03Ca0.97)CO3], muscovite [KAl (Si3AlO10)(OH,F)2], alum [KAl (SO4)2(OH)6], sulfur (S8), chlorite or clinochlore [(MgAl)6(Si,Al)4O10(OH)8], kaolinite [Al2Si2O5(OH)4] and albite (NaAlSi3O8). According to the mineral paragenetic relationship and modern knowledge of mineral medicine, the granules contain quartz, alum, kaolinite, sulfur, stalactite and lapis chloriti. They are probably the famous Wushi Powder from history. These findings provide further new clues for the study of Chinese medical history. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The targets of limiting global warming levels below 2°C or even 1.5°C set by Paris Agreement heavily rely on bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), which can remove carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. Biomass and coal co‐firing with CCS is one of BECCS technologies, as well as a pathway to achieve low carbon transformation and upgrading through retrofitting coal power plants. However, few studies have considered co‐firing ratio of biomass to coal based on each specific coal power plant's characteristic information such as location, installed capacity, resources allocation, and logistic transportation. Therefore, there is a need to understand whether it is worth retrofitting any individual coal power plant for the benefit of GHG emission reduction. It is also important to understand which power plant is suitable for retrofit and the associated co‐firing ratio. In order to fulfill this gap, this paper develops a framework to solve these questions, which mainly include three steps. First, biomass resources are assessed at 1 km spatial resolution with the help of the Geography Information Science method. Second, by setting biomass collection points and linear program model, resource allocation and supply chain for each power plants are complete. Third, is by assessing the life‐cycle emission for each power plant. In this study, Hubei Province in China is taken as the research area and study case. The main conclusions are as follows: (a) biomass co‐firing ratio for each CCS coal power plant to achieve carbon neutral is between 40% and 50%; (b) lower co‐firing ratio sometimes may obtain better carbon emission reduction benefits; (c) even the same installed capacity power plants should consider differentiated retrofit strategy according to their own characteristic. The preparation and characterisation of certified reference materials of four selenium‐rich rocks (GBW07397 to GBW07400) are described in this paper. The raw materials were derived from selenium‐rich rocks in two famous seleniferous regions, Enshi Prefecture, Hubei Province and Ziyang County, Shaanxi Province, China. Sample homogeneity and stability were tested by inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry and atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The determined element mass fractions included selenium, arsenic, copper, zinc, molybdenum, cadmium, lead, vanadium and silver. Except for silver, the results of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the relative standard deviations of the element mass fractions showed that the four materials exhibited good homogeneity and stability. Ten laboratories were involved in an interlaboratory comparison scheme for certification. Eight element mass fractions in the selenium‐rich rocks were assigned as certified values, while only indicative values were obtained for Ag mass fractions. The certified values and expanded uncertainties for the selenium mass fractions in GBW07397–GBW07400 are 0.96 ± 0.05, 1.03 ± 0.05, 49 ± 4 and 38.5 ± 1.9 μg g−1, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In China, there are places that are rich in gem-quality turquoise resources, including north-west Hubei Province and the nearby Baihe County in Shaanxi Province, and many ancient mining sites, although the mining history remains a mystery. Based on the compositional data from reference samples of known deposits, a comparison of the major and trace element contents of archaeological turquoise may help with determination of artefact provenance. This paper discusses new evidence of provenance-tracking of turquoise in this area, obtained from geochemical analyses using REE and other trace elements of 22 turquoises and their surrounding rock samples from six ancient mines and three archaeological sites. The results indicate that the three archaeological turquoises from the tomb of the Middle Spring and Autumn Period (580-560 bc) and the Warring States Period (476-221 bc) in Hubei Province were made of raw material from north-west Hubei Province and the nearby Baihe County in Shaanxi Province. The relationship between rural labour transfer and cultivated land use has always been a hot topic in academic field and government management. Here, by using the large‐scale survey data of 1,868 farmers from 37 villages in Jianghan Plain and the low‐hill areas in southeastern Hubei province, we investigated the relationship between rural labour force transfer and decision‐making in cultivated land use from the perspective of terrain heterogeneity. The findings indicate that under different terrain conditions, there are significant differences in the decision‐making of farmers concerning cultivated land use, leading to different land use efficiencies in different areas. Specifically, rural labour force transfer enhances land use efficiency in plain areas; however, it does not affect that in the low‐hill areas. In addition, we found that in the plain areas, improving the quality of rural household labour can increase the cultivated land use efficiency, while in low‐hill areas, enhancement of geographical accessibility is the key to improving land use efficiency. The article focuses on a research paper on the genesis of the Tieshan iron-copper skarn deposit in Hubei Province, China. It presents the textural and geochemical analysis of magnetite from the deposit. It also suggests that oscillatory zoning in magnetite results from the dissolution-reprecipitation process (DRP) in magnetite.

The article focuses on the blight on the leaves of garlic observed in Dangyang County in Hubei Province, China from autumn 2004 to spring 2007. The plant disease initially manifested small and white lesions which eventually progressed to apical necrosis that lasted until the leaves withered. Using potato sugar agar (PSA), isolations were made. Pieces of autoclaved filter paper were placed on the agar to induce sporulation. The fungus was identified as Stemphylium solani based on Elli. Sequences in GenBank were compared based on the genomic data extracted from three isolates which showed 99% similarity with S. solani. Pathogenicity tests indicate that the leaf blights were caused by S. botryosum, S. vesicarium (Boiteux et al, 1994) or Cladosporuim echinulatum (Pal and Basuchaudry, 1976).
