Aim This paper intends to compare quality of life (QoL) and mental health among pregnant women with and without previous pregnancy loss. Methods An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 409 women between the 16th and 30th weeks of gestation in health centers in Ahvaz, Iran, including 145 women with prior pregnancy loss (group 1) and 264 women without such history (group 2). Data were collected using the QoL Short Form-36 questionnaire, the Mental Health Questionnaire 25 and a questionnaire for assessing sociodemographic variables. Data were analyzed using spss version 22. Results were analyzed using the χ2-test, the Student's t-test and logistic regression. P < 0.05 was defined as statistically significant. Results There was a significant difference between the two groups in respect to QoL and mental health. Women with previous pregnancy loss had lower scores in total and in all subscales of the QoL Short Form-36 ( P < 0.001) and higher scores in total and in six out of the nine subscales of the Mental Health Questionnaire 25 compared to women without these histories. Conclusion Women with history of spontaneous abortion and stillbirth seem to have poorer QoL and mental health during their subsequent pregnancy than those without such experience. The aims of the study were to translate the Kidney Disease Quality of Life - Short Form version 1.3 (KDQOL-SF ver. 1.3) questionnaire into Iranian (Farsi), and to then assess it in terms of validity and reliability on Iranian patients. The questionnaire was first translated into Farsi by two independent translators, and then subsequently translated back into English. After translation disparities had been reconciled, the final Iranian questionnaire was tested. An initial test-retest reliability evaluation was performed over a 10 day period on a sample of 20 patients recruited from a larger group (212 patients with end-stage renal disease on haemodialysis). Afterwards, reliability was estimated by internal consistency, and validity was assessed using known group comparisons and constructs for the patient group as a whole. Finally, the factor structure of the questionnaire was extracted by performing exploratory factor analysis. All of the scales in the questionnaire showed good test-retest reliability (i.e. intraclass correlations between test and retest scores were >0.7). All of the scales met the minimal criteria (0.7) for internal consistency and Cronbach's-α ranged 0.71-0.93. Furthermore, results from a discriminate validity evaluation showed that the questionnaire could be used to discriminate between subgroups of the patients. Finally, a principal component analysis of the disease-specific scales indicated that this part of the questionnaire could be summarized into an 11 factor structure that jointly accounted for 79.81% of the variance. The Iranian version of the KDQOL-SF questionnaire is both highly reliable and valid for use with Iranian patients on haemodialysis. This study aimed to examine the role of attitudes towards psychotherapy and countertransference dimensions as predictors of professional quality of life and burnout among psychotherapists in Iran. Participants were 259 psychotherapists who worked in mental health centres in Tehran (Iran), and they completed the Professional Quality of Life questionnaire, the Therapist Response Questionnaire and the Therapist Attitudes Scale. Professional quality of life was associated with countertransference dimensions and attitude towards psychotherapy. This study concludes that psychotherapists can benefit from working on their specific countertransference issues and re‐evaluating their basic attitudes towards psychotherapy to achieve the highest levels of professional satisfaction. Background: Employee bullying and burnout are two crucial, prevalent and challenging concepts that adversely affect organizational staff behaviours. Also, adverse patient care is associated with nurse bullying and burnout. Aim: This study aimed to assess the incidence and association between workplace bullying and occupational burnout among nurses in critical care units in Iran. Study design: A cross‐sectional descriptive study. Methods: The subjects were 184 nurses from critical care units in 6 teaching hospitals in Iran. Three questionnaires were distributed among the study population; (a) demographic characteristics questionnaire, (b) Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and (c) bullying at Workplace Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to present the workplace bullying and occupational burnout status among nurses. Linear and logistic regression analyses were conducted to estimate the relationship between workplace bullying with MBI and nurses' demographic characteristics, respectively. Results: 62% of the nurses had moderate emotional exhaustion, 59.8% had moderate depersonalization and 46.2% had a moderate individual achievement. 75.5% faced workplace bullying. There was a positive and significant association between bullying scores and burnout in total (Pearson's r = 0.598, p < 0.001). Linear regression test showed a positive and significant relationship between bullying with MBI dimensions (R = 0.613, p < 0.001) for emotional exhaustion, (R = 0.679, p < 0.001) for depersonalization and (R = −0.417, p < 0.001) for individual achievement. Conclusions: Among Iranian nurses, bullying is a prominent and substantial issue that significantly correlates with their negative performance by enhancing job burnout. Relevance to Clinical Practice: It is suggested that some measures are adopted to avoid workplace bullying and to reduce occupational burnout for nurses. Managers should create an environment that encourages nurses to voice their concerns – informing nurses about their rights and creating a positive atmosphere in the hospital. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This study investigated the impact of spiritual intelligence and demographic factors in the prediction of occupational stress, quality of life and coronavirus anxiety among nurses. Design: A cross‐sectional study was planned. Methods: The study was conducted among full‐time nurses who were employed in two teaching hospitals of Babol city which were referral centres for caring patients infected with COVID‐19 from February–May 2021. One hundred and twenty‐nine nurses completed five questionnaires including the demographic questions, Quality of life (WHOQOL‐BRIF), Occupational Role Questionnaire (ORQ), Spiritual Intelligence and Coronavirus Anxiety Scale. Results: The findings revealed that 69% of the nurses experienced moderate occupational stress, moderate quality of life and low coronavirus anxiety. Spiritual intelligence was the only significant negative predictor of occupational stress (β = −0.517, p = <0.001). The only positive predictor of quality of life was perceived income adequacy. Predicting factors of coronavirus anxiety were the perceived income adequacy as protective (β = −0.221, p = 0.022) and the number of children as predisposing (β = 0.401, p = 0.004) factors. These findings should be considered when planning nursing interventions for improvement of occupational stress, quality of life and anxiety especially during crises like the COVID‐19 pandemic. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between identity crisis and suicide resilience and quality of life in adolescents with burns in Iranian society. Design: A cross‐sectional study. Methods: Four hundred thirty adolescents with burn in three hospitals were selected via convenience sampling. They completed questionnaires online. Data were analysed by SPSS software version 22. Results: Findings showed a strong and inverse correlation between identity crisis with suicide resilience (r = −.92, p <.001) and quality of life (r = −.87, p <.001). Variables of suicide resilience, being a child of a divorced family, cause of burns, extent of burn, financial situation, gender and age can predict 68.74% of the variance in identity crisis in these patients. Patient or Public Contribution: Adolescents with burns suffer from an identity crisis, and although they report high resilience to suicide, they have a mediocre quality of life. Therefore, it is suggested that basic planning and extensive support be taken to improve physical and mental health, promote the quality of life and consequently reduce the identity crisis in these adolescents. Spatial modeling of migration and the identification of the effective parameters are imperative for planning and managing demographic, economic, social, and environmental changes on various geographical scales. The recent climate change stressors as well as inequality in terms of education and life quality have triggered internal mass migrations in Iran, causing pressure on housing, the job market, and potential slums around large cities. This study proposes a new approach to modeling migration patterns in Iran based on multi‐criteria decision analysis. For this purpose, a total of 23 individual criteria embedded within four criteria groups (economic, socio‐cultural, welfare, and environmental) affecting national migration were used. The analytic hierarchy process was employed to determine weights for the input factors and the weighted linear combination (WLC) model was used for the integration of criteria, based on which maps of migration potential were produced. The model applied was evaluated based on the correlation coefficient between migration potential values obtained from the WLC model and the actual net migration rate. Among the input individual criteria, unemployment, higher education centers, number of physicians, and dust storms were found to influence national migration. Furthermore, our findings reveal that the potential for migration across Iranian provinces is heterogeneous, with the spatial potential for emigration being the highest and lowest in the border and central provinces, respectively. The correlation coefficient calculated between outputs from the WLC model and the net migration rate from 2011 to 2016, was.81, indicating the relatively high performance of the proposed model in producing a migration spatial potential map. Our proposed approach, along with the results achieved, can be useful to decision‐makers and planners in designing data‐driven policies against inequality‐ and climate‐induced stressors. Objectives: To evaluate the relationship between a number of prevalent foot problems in older people and their history of falls and quality of life. To examine the relationship between timed up and go (TUG) test time and ankle muscles' strength. Method: In this cross‐sectional observational study on a convenient sample of 350 people 65 years and older, direct logistic and hierarchical regressions were used to assess the relation of self‐reported falls and quality of life with hallux valgus, oedema, sensory loss and callus. The correlation coefficients were calculated to measure the relationship between TUG test time and ankle muscle strength. Results: Moderate negative correlations were measured between ankle muscles' strength and TUG time (rDorsiflexors = −0.42 p = 0.000, rPlantar flexors = −0.45 p = 0.000). The odds ratio extracted from logistic regression for foot pain was 3.05 (p = 0.000, 95% CI: 1.8–5.1). The results of the hierarchical regression showed that oedema had the highest contribution to depicting the quality of life (standardised B = −0.22, p = 0.001), followed by foot pain (beta = −0.178, p = 0.004) and plantar sensory loss (beta = −0.143, p = 0.019). Conclusion: The results of this study highlight the importance of foot problems in older people. Foot pain showed relationship with self‐reported fall experience. Oedema and foot pain had negative impact on quality of life. Ankle muscles' strength may affect balance in older people. Patients with ostomy are faced with several physical, psychological, and social challenges and need to be prepared to overcome these challenges. Studies have shown that training plays an important role in helping patients to adapt with ostomy, live with it, and improve their psychological well‐being and quality of life (QOL). Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the effect of structured ostomy care training on QOL and anxiety of the patients with permanent ostomy. In this randomised clinical trial study, 60 eligible participants were recruited from the only ostomy clinic in Kerman, Iran. They were selected using a purposive sampling method and randomly assigned to either a control group that received routine ostomy care or an intervention group that attended oral and practical training and a question and answer session by a trained ostomy nurse and received an ostomy information booklet besides their routine care. Outcome variables were anxiety and QOL in general and its physical, mental, social, and spiritual dimensions in detail. By using the anxiety subscale of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and City of Hope‐quality of life [COH‐QOL], data were collected before and 2 months after intervention in both groups. Data were analysed by SPSS version 19 using χ², analysis of variance (ANOVA), independent t, and paired t test and multiple regression analysis. The results showed that the intervention group had significantly lower mean scores in anxiety (P =.001) and a higher mean score in overall QOL (P =.009) compared with the control group. The most significant increase was observed for psychological, social, and physical aspects, and the least was in the spiritual aspect, all of which improved after intervention. After controlling the effects of confounding variables such as age, ostomy period, and number of children, the structured training programme still had a positive effect on QOL. Structured ostomy care training, including face‐to‐face education and personal practice of using ostomy equipment, along with written material provided by the ostomy nurse specialist, may lead to an increase in the overall QOL and a decrease in the perceived anxiety level in patients. This type of training is not routinely delivered to ostomy patients in our health care setting, so it is feasible to prepare surgical wards and to educate nurses to work with their patients before and after ostomy creation. Furthermore, to ease patients' religious concerns, we recommend counselling, and the support of religious leaders in the Muslim community may play a key role to adaptation regarding religious matters after ostomy surgeries and alleviate patients' concerns. ABSTRACT Benign prostatic hyperplasia ( BPH) is a common problem of the elderly population. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Urtica dioica on the clinical symptoms of BPH. This double-blind clinical trial included 248 patients with symptomatic BPH in Shohada Ashayer Hospital of Khorramabad. The patients were randomly divided into four groups of treatment with U. dioica 3 g, U. dioica 5 g, U. dioica 7 g and treatment with prazosin 1 mg alone as the control group. The clinical symptoms, patients' quality of life and level of serum prostate-specific antigen ( PSA) were measured before and 2 months after the intervention. The results of the study showed significant differences between the four groups after the intervention for the scores of clinical symptoms and patients' quality of life, while no significant differences were found for serum PSA levels. Sheffe post hoc comparisons showed significant improvements in the scores of the patients' clinical symptom in the U. dioica 5 g/d and U. dioica 7 g/d groups. The results of the study showed that simultaneous consumption of higher doses of U. dioica, up to 7 g/d, plus prazosin, compared with the consumption of prazosin alone, resulted in significant improvements in the clinical symptoms of BPH. Aim To evaluate the association between health-related quality of life and glucose metabolism status in a study population in Qazvin, Iran. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in 1044 people (aged 20-78 years old) between September 2010 and April 2011 in Qazvin, Iran. An oral glucose tolerance test was performed for each participant who had never been diagnosed with diabetes. Participants were characterized as having normal glucose metabolism, pre-diabetes or diabetes according to American Diabetes Association criteria. The short-form 36 questionnaire was used to measure quality of life. Data were analysed using a chi-squared test, anova and ancova. Results A total of 530 (51.7%) of the participants were women, and 24.1 and 11.6% of the participants were categorized as having prediabetes and diabetes mellitus, respectively. Except for the role emotional domain, there was a gradual decrease in the mean scores of every domain of the short-form 36 scale across the three study groups. The mean scores in the physical domains were significantly different among the participants with normal glucose metabolism and those with diabetes. After adding age as covariate, there were no significant differences between the categories in any of the domains. Conclusion There is no association between quality of life domains and glucose metabolism status in Iranian subjects. More longitudinal studies are necessary to investigate the natural history of pre-diabetes, diabetes and quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives The long and demanding course of medical education may be accompanied by distress with serious consequences. This study was conducted to assess the multidimensional health-related quality of life ( HR- QoL) in medical students in different stages of medical education and its associations with behavioural and social factors. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in medical students at three medical schools at, respectively, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Aja University of Medical Sciences and Baghiyatalah Medical School, in November and December 2011 using stratified sampling. Data were obtained on participants' characteristics, including gender, current education stage, living situation, smoking status, physical activity, and membership of associations or teams. Health-related QoL was measured using the Persian version of the 36-item Short Form Health Survey ( SF-36), which generates a physical component score ( PCS) and a mental component score ( MCS). Logistic regression was applied to measure the adjusted associations between variables. Results Of the 1350 students invited, 1086 individuals completed the survey to give a response rate of 80.4%. Logistic regression showed male gender (odds ratio [ OR] = 2.88, p < 0.001), living with family versus in a dormitory ( OR = 2.72, p < 0.001) and participation in daily physical activity ( OR = 16.96, p < 0.001) to be significantly associated with a higher PCS. Being in an internship versus in the basic sciences stage of medical education showed a significant association with a lower PCS ( OR = 0.12, p < 0.001). Similarly, male gender ( OR = 1.67, p < 0.05), living with family rather than in a dormitory ( OR = 16.91, p < 0.001), daily physical activity ( OR = 25.36, p < 0.001), and membership of associations or teams ( OR = 3.67, p < 0.001) were associated with a higher MCS. Likewise, studying in internship rather than in the basic sciences stage was accompanied by a lower MCS ( OR = 0.12, p < 0.001). Conclusions This large, multi-institution study, despite its limitations, indicates that medical students in internships show lower scores in all domains of QoL. Social engagement is an important associate of higher HR-QoL. Further studies should address the efficacy of interventions, such as self-awareness programmes and initiatives to encourage students to be more physically and socially active, in improving students' health. The primary objective of the study was to translate and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ (PedsQL™) Oral Health Scale in over 1000 Iranian children. Methods. A standard forward and backward translation procedure was used to convert the US English dialect version of the PedsQL™ Oral Health Scale into the Iranian language (Persian). The Iranian version of the PedsQL™ Oral Health Scale, in combination with the PedsQL™ 4.0 Generic Core Scales, was then subsequently administered to 1053 Iranian children and 1026 parents. The reliability of the PedsQL™ Oral Health Scale was evaluated using internal consistency and test-retest methods. Known-groups discriminant validity, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of the Oral Health and the four Generic Core Scales combined, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the Oral Health Scale alone were conducted. The Benjamini-Hochberg procedure was used to correct P-values for multiple comparisons. Results. Good to excellent internal consistency and test-retest reliabilities were demonstrated. The PedsQL™ Oral Health Scale demonstrated discriminant validity for subgroups of children across different decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) index categories and gender. The EFA supported the a priori factor model of the combined five scales. The CFA analysis confirmed the unidimensional factor structure of the Oral Health Scale. Conclusions. The PedsQL™ Oral Health Scale demonstrated excellent psychometric properties in combination with the PedsQL™ 4.0 Generic Core Scales. International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry 2011 Background. Functional and headgear are two well-known approaches in the treatment of skeletal class II malocclusion in preadolescent children. Assessment of psycho-social impacts of wearing devices during the treatment period is central to enhancing the quality of healthcare services. Aim. This study aimed to compare oral-health-related quality of life in two groups consisting of children wearing headgear or functional appliances. We also compared these groups with a non-malocclusion group. Design. The study population consisted of 187, 11- to 14-year-old children in three groups of functional ( n = 67), headgear ( n = 67) and nonmalocclusion ( n = 53). Children were asked to complete the translated version of the short form of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire. Total scores and subscale scores of the three clinical groups were compared through ANOVA. Results. There was no significant difference in mean total scale score and subscale scores between functional and headgear groups ( P > 0.05). Significant differences were found in both mean total and subscale scores between the malocclusion and nonmalocclusion groups ( P < 0.001) except oral symptoms subscale ( P > 0.05). Conclusions. The results of this study reveal that functional and headgear appliances do not differ in terms of impact on daily life during the treatment.
