Based on in-depth qualitative research, this paper compares and contrasts two different policy approaches to Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (P/CVE) within the European context. On the one hand, the Dutch case relies on a holistic and integrated approach in which a national framework underlies a targeted multi-stakeholder approach to preventing and countering manifestations of violent extremism. On the other hand, while lacking an overarching national policy framework, the Italian case study presents a range of mechanisms and projects aimed at combating violent extremism at the local level. The paper traces the different histories of terrorism and radicalization in the two countries to assess the emergence of these divergent approaches. Subsequently, regional case studies of the Delft and Milan areas are explored in-depth to illustrate how the respective policies are put into action, and to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. This paper evaluates the sustainable development graduation track at TU Delft. This track can be followed by all students of TU Delft. It consists of an interdisciplinary colloquium 'Technology in Sustainable Development', 300 h of self-chosen courses on sustainable development and a graduation project in which sustainable development is integrated. This paper deals with the numbers of students that follow the track, with the results of a questionnaire among the students, and with the jobs students have found after graduation. Our main conclusions are that about 50 students start the sustainable development track each year, which is more than initially intended; that two thirds of the sustainable development graduates completely integrate sustainable development into their graduation project; that the students feel that the sustainable development certificate adds value to their graduation and that many of them find jobs within the sustainable development field. The creative city concept is popular among researchers and policy-makers. On the one hand, academic literature elaborates, on a conceptual level, the importance of creativity and innovation for urban competitiveness; on the other, numerous cities develop and implement creative city policies in practice. The connection between these two is rather weak and, accordingly, creative city policy tends to be ad hoc. Our purpose in this paper is to narrow the above-mentioned gap between theory and practice, by addressing the question of how conceptual insights into the creative city can be converted into an elaborated operational approach for local policy practice. We propose a three-step approach: (1) to position a city's current creative places and communities within the context of social and economic structures, urban narratives and prevailing governance structures and style by means of a systematic analytical framework; (2) to assess the spatial, social and symbolic place qualities of the creative production and consumption; (3) to identify options for effective policy intervention. We further examine how these steps may be applied in practice, and use the city of Delft in the Netherlands as an example. This paper will first sketch some basic features of the engineering profession, and the need for change. It will analyse the political process that resulted in the decision at Delft University of Technology (DUT) to emphasise Sustainable Development (SD) in its curricula. The main goal of this education is to show that SD is not a burden, but a challenge to contribute to as an engineer. It will describe the changes in the engineering curriculum that were implemented and give a preliminary evaluation of these changes. The changes encompassed: a 3 ECTS compulsory training module “Technology in Sustainable Development”,implementing SD issues in existing courses and design work, andthe development of a special MSc graduation certificate. In his celebratory remarks, Professor Freestone observed, Few individuals have contributed more to the development of planning history than Professor Stephen Ward. Professor Carola Hein and Professor Ian Morley Chinese University of Hong Kong, were named as the new IPHS President and Vice President, respectively, and it was also announced that Professor Morley, along Professor Hendrik Tieben, will be the co-conveners of the 20th IPHS Conference in early July, 2024 in Hong Kong. Freestone also highlighted Professor Ward's contribution to the "international diffusion of modern planning ideas", which continue to inform the conceptual frameworks of a great portion of contemporary international planning history research. This study seeks answers to the research question 'How can walkability of urban spaces be analysed with a multidimensional approach by using mobile methods?' The research consists of a literature review, a field study in the city centre of Delft conducted as Go-Along walks, which provide better insight in capturing the experience of walking in situ, and evaluation of design scenarios that were developed according to the outcomes of the field study. Groundwater governance tends to be concerned with problems of over-extraction and pollution. Groundwater excess, which is increasingly becoming a problem in many places around the world, has largely been ignored. This article discusses groundwater excess and particularly the governance approach for engaging with groundwater excess. By discussing a case study in the Netherlands, we argue that groundwater excess has a varied impact on different actors. Scholarly research has described religious reactions to early modern disasters as ‘providential discourse’, in line with the theological term Divine Providence, and has claimed that the so-described ‘peccatogenic’ perception (from the Latin word ‘peccatum’ or sin) prevails in this discourse. This article reconsiders the concept of providential discourse in two respects. Firstly, its diversity is highlighted. Secondly, it argues that providential discourse, rhetorically charged as it was, often aimed to evoke collective emotions in its audiences, such as compassion with those affected. Owing to its beneficial effects, many governments encourage bicycle use for commuting. In search of effective strategies, they often study best practices from elsewhere. However, in order to assess the likely success of transferring measures from one city or country to another, an accurate comparison of the bicycling context is needed. This article explores the similarities and differences in attitudes and beliefs about the decision to commute by bicycle to work in two bicycling-oriented cities: Delft, the Netherlands, and Davis, California, in the U.S. Because bicycling conditions are good in both cities, it is possible to explore the role that attitudes play in the decision to cycle to work. Analyses indicate that beliefs about safety and the importance attached to environmental benefits differ between the cities. Social norms about cycling are important in both cities, but residents in Davis are more often confronted with negative reactions to cycling. Similarities are found in beliefs towards the health benefits of cycling. Strategies successful in one city in encouraging cycling by targeting or leveraging health therefore offer promise for the other city. The article "The Genesis of the Wall Chart" first discusses the author's contribution to the Vermeer and the Delft School exhibition catalogue (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2001). This contribution contained only a fraction of the data yielded by his archival research. After the newspaper the Delftsche Courant published his complete Dutch version of a large wall chart, he decided to publish privately an English version entitled Johannes Vermeer & the Delft School; A Chart of Homes of Delft Artists and Patrons in the Seventeenth Century. It pinpoints the whereabouts of some 120 artists, 120 patrons and 20 monumental buildings in Delft. On the reverse of the map an encyclopedic list of Delft artists and patrons is presented.
