A stylised fact in bibliometric research is that in the field of management studies, half or more of the papers published are never cited. If true, this implies that efforts and resources are considerably wasted because half of the academic work is not considered worthy by the same community that developed them. We studied a sample of 2777 papers published in 20 journals and representing different levels of quality. Of these, only 191 papers, representing 6.5% of the sample, were never cited, suggesting that the aforementioned stylised fact is a myth. We identified the factors that contribute to the level of citations, including the ranking of the journal in the quality list, time since last citation, and number of authors. The purpose of this study is to examine the altmetrics of academic papers highly cited in the social sciences and to assess whether the altmetrics show any correlation with the citations and open access status. To accomplish this goal, 638 highly cited articles from SCOPUS were extracted and PlumX metrics were used to measure the altmetrics (views, readers, blogs, Wikis, and Tweets). Then, the relationship among altmetrics, citation rates, and open access status was analyzed through Spearman correlation analysis and the Mann–Whitney test. In addition, with corresponding analysis, this study identified and visualized the differences in altmetrics between 10 social science sub-disciplines. As a result, the papers in the social sciences have greater than one altmetrics presence in greater than 30% of all altmetrics sources. In detail, greater than 90% of the papers had one or more readers in Mendeley, and 50% of the papers had one or more references in Wiki. There was also a strong correlation between the numbers of citations and readers, and open access papers showed a higher altmetrics presence than those that were closed. In terms of differences between disciplines, many psychology articles were registered as a reference on Wiki; many articles in the fields of humanity, society, and politics were drawn to popular discussions through Tweets; and the education field had the highest number of Mendeley readers. This study traced the social influence of highly cited papers in the social sciences that had not been understood before and then statistically interpreted the differences in social impact among the 10 social science disciplines. The number of citations that a published article has received reflects the importance that paper has on that area of practice. In hand surgery, it is unknown which journal articles are cited most frequently. The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the characteristics of the top 100 papers in the field of hand surgery. The 100 most cited papers were identified in the following journals; the Journal of Hand Surgery (American volume), the Journal of Hand Surgery (European volume), the Journal of Hand Surgery (British and European volume), The Scandinavian Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive and Hand Surgery, Hand Clinics, and the Journal of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery. The articles were ranked in order of the number of citations received. Aim. This study's purpose was to determine if there was a relationship between Nobel Laureates' awards and landmark papers and winning the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine during 1983-2012. Methods. The 66 Nobelists' awards and landmark papers in the period 1983-2012 were analyzed. Results. The results showed that the most Nobelists had won Gairdner, Lasker, Howitz or Wolf Award before they won Nobel Prize, indicating that Gairdner Award may be considered as a Nobel Prize's wind vane. A small number of landmark papers were indeed published in low impact factor journals (10.5% below impact factor 5.0) and some of their citation were low (23.2% below 400 times). There were 61 of 76 landmark papers published in the journals of JCR partition 1, reaching 80%, but 2 of 76 landmark papers were even outside of JCR partition, demonstrating that JCR partition acts as a reciprocal supplement with impact factor and citation times. The test period of Nobel Prize was substantially between 10 to 30 years. There were 5 persons whose landmark papers were cited all above 6000 times to get Nobel Prize within the test period of ten years, suggesting that there is a trend of certain inverse ratio between the citation and the test period of Nobel Prize. Citations are valuable capital in the academy as the number of citations is the most frequently used indicator in evaluating the quality of papers, journals, researchers, and universities. Thus, the characteristics of highly cited articles (HCA) have become a common research topic but the approach has been mainly descriptive with no profound critical reflection of what kind of research is cited, where the research is from, where the research is published, and what do these things mean for edtech research. This paper contributes to this need by providing a descriptive and critical analysis of 200 highly cited articles from 10 edtech journals. To summarize the key findings, a 'typical' edtech HCA is a Western-based review article or quantitative research paper reporting positive findings from higher education, published in a high-impact factor general edtech journal by a major publisher. Though protection of human research subjects is universally recognized as a critical requirement for the ethical conduct of research, few studies have examined retractions of medical articles through apparent noncompliance with that requirement. From our survey of 99 retracted papers published from 1981 to 2011, we found that the basis for those decisions was poorly explained in retraction notices and that most of the articles continued to be cited. Lean Supply Chain Management is an emerging research field in Operations Management that is attracting growing attention from researchers and practitioners. This paper aims to present a comprehensive analysis of the Lean Supply Chain Management literature to understand the influence, basic research characteristics, interrelationships, and productivity of the research in this field. The present study uses BibExcel and VOSviewer software to conduct thorough bibliometric and network analyses of 715 papers published in the Web of Science database over the period 1996-2020. The use of bibliometric methods has enabled the identification of current and emerging research clusters to detect some key research topics, interrelations, and collaboration patterns. Moreover, this analysis has enabled to draw numerous conclusions and propose a roadmap for future research in the field. This paper, therefore, provides some new insights not previously evaluated in other reviews of Lean Supply Chain Management that can help researchers to understand the evolution of research trends through a proposed classification of the literature on this topic. Scientific publications with compromised integrity should be retracted. Papers citing retracted publications might need correction if findings depend on the retracted publication. While many studies have reported on post-retraction citations, few have focused on citations made before the retraction. We investigated the citation profile for a research group with 113 published concerns regarding publication integrity (CRPI). We identified 376 of their source publications that were cited by 5577 articles, and whether the source publication had a published CRPI. Of 6926 references to a source publication in these citing articles, for 3925 (57%) the source article had a published CRPI, while for 3001 (43%) it did not. Of these 3925 references, 3688 were in citing articles published before the source article CRPI was published. 166 citing articles containing 198 references to source publications were published after the corresponding source article CRPI was published (range 1–5 such references/article; 19/166 (11%) articles had >1 reference). In summary, many articles cite retracted publications, with the majority of these references occurring before the retraction. However, very few publications assess the impact of the retracted citations, even though the findings of many might be altered, at least in part, by removal of the retracted citation. Background: Reflection is well established as an important part of teacher education, but it is also the focus of critical enquiry. This means that reflection is of interest to those who wish to explore its use to produce ‘better’ teachers. It is also of interest to scholars who are interested in the wider implications of reflection, for example, in relation to power and social control. Academic articles are the primary medium through which ideas and practices are communicated. However, they can only contribute if they are accepted for publication on the basis of making a contribution to knowledge. To be seen in this way, a journal paper needs to cite earlier work to show understanding of this work and how this is being augmented. Purpose: This paper aims to initiate an academic debate of citation practices which, it argues, should be based on an awareness of current practices and a willingness to share, and even change, them. To facilitate the debate and the development of a better understanding of citing and its implications, the paper offers a tripartite citation framework. Sources of evidence: The extensive citation analysis literature is reviewed to provide a context for an examination of the variety of citation practices found in 24 papers, which all focus on initial teacher education and which cite the same critical paper (Fendler, L., Teacher reflection in a hall of mirrors: Historical influences and political reverberations.Educational Researcher, 32, no. 3: 16–25, 2003; doi: 10.3102/0013189X032003016). Main argument: This paper argues that there is value in differentiating three categories of citation, labelled ‘cameo’, ‘supporting role’ and ‘star’. These categories do not make judgements about what counts as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ referencing. Rather, they provide a way for authors to assess how they are citing and what the possible consequences may be. These can include an apparent lack of understanding not just of a cited paper but also of the wider literature. This means that citation that is not being carefully managed can undermine an argument. Conclusions: This paper concludes that there is there is a need to initiate an academic debate about citation which is premised on the development of self-awareness about current practice and its consequences. Such a debate could bring about a number of benefits. It would encourage individual scholars to develop self-aware and ethical citation; it would also clarify current expectations about citation and enable academic communities to reflect on whether enquiry is well served by them. Objective: The objective of the current study was to identify the 100 top-cited studies in cancer immunotherapy. Materials and methods: A retrospective bibliometric analysis was performed in March 2019. Studies were searched on the Web of Science to identify the 100 top-cited studies in cancer immunotherapy. Studies were identified and analysed for authorship, journal, study type, year of publication and institution. Results: The 100 top-cited papers were cited from 591 to 5332 times and were published between 1986 and 2016. They were published in 27 journals, and New England Journal of Medicine published most of the studies (n = 14), followed by Nature (n = 11) and Journal of Clinical Oncology (n = 10). They were published from 10 countries, and the USA published most of the studies (n = 82), followed by France (n = 5) and Netherlands (n = 3). National Cancer Institute in USA was the leading institution and Rosenberg, SA was the most productive author. Conclusions: This study provides insights into development and most important papers in cancer immunotherapy and will provide evidence for future research in cancer immunotherapy. Multiple inherent biases related to different citation practices (for e.g., self-citations, negative citations, wrong citations, multi-authorship-biased citations, honorary citations, circumstantial citations, discriminatory citations, selective and arbitrary citations, etc.) make citation-based bibliometrics strongly flawed and defective measures. A paper can be highly cited for a while (for e.g., under circumstantial or transitional knowledge), but years later it may appear that its findings, paradigms, or theories were untrue or invalid anymore. By contrast, a paper may remain shelved or overlooked for years or decades, but new studies or discoveries may actualize its subject at any moment. As citation-based metrics are transformed into “commercial activities,” the “citation credit” should be considered on a commercial basis too, in the sense that “citation credit” should be shared out as a “citation dividend” by shareholders (coauthors) averagely or proportionally to their contributions but not fully appropriated by each of them. At equal numbers of citations, the greater number of authors, the lower “citation credit” should be and vice versa. Overlooking the presence of distorted and subjective citation practices makes many people and administrators “obsessed” with the number of citations to such an extent to run after “highly cited” authors and to create specialized citation databases for commercial purposes. Citation-based bibliometrics, however, are unreliable and unscientific measures; citation counts do not mean that a more cited work is of a higher quality or accuracy than a less cited work because citations do not measure the quality or accuracy. Objective:We aimed to identify and analyze the characteristics of the 100 most highly-cited papers in the research field of deep brain stimulation (DBS). Methods:The Web of Science was searched for highly-cited papers related to DBS research. The number of citations, countries, institutions of origin, year of publication, and research area were noted and analyzed. Results:The 100 most highly-cited articles had a mean of 304.15 citations. These accrued an average of 25.39 citations a year. The most represented target by far was the subthalamic nucleus (STN). These articles were published in 46 high-impact journals, withBrain(n = 10) topping the list. These articles came from 11 countries, with the USA contributing the most highly-cited articles (n = 29); however, it was the University of Toronto (n = 13) in Canada that was the institution with the most highly-cited studies. Conclusions:This study identified the 100 most highly-cited studies and highlighted a historical perspective on the progress in the field of DBS. Is Kuhn's notion of exemplar applicable to ongoing biomedical sciences? Many philosophers may be skeptical because Kuhn's cases are mostly from physics and chemistry. However, how do philosophers test the above (non-)applicability directly? We will use examples to illustrate a scientometric approach to the integrated history and philosophy of science (SciHPS) and argue that SciHPS can provide an empirical basis to empirically test and revise a philosophical concept questioned for its applicability to biomedical sciences. This paper will build on Yan, K., M. L. Tsai, and T. R. Huang. [2021. "Improving the Quality of Case-Based Research in the Philosophy of Contemporary Sciences." Synthese 198 (10): 9591–9610. ] heart-rate variability (HRV) case study to examine the biomedical changes within the HRV community from 1970 to 2022. We will investigate how a task force standardises and entrenches methodological standardisations, and argue that some of the task force's methodological standardisations are tool-afforded by an algorithm. These tool-afforded aspects further explain why an HRV method is robustly dominant in the HRV community despite other HRV scholars having developed alternatives to compete with the dominant one. We will then show how to use SciHPS to empirically test and revise the Kuhnian concept of exemplar into a concept of citation-exemplar that better captures the above tool-afforded aspects of standardisations. This article describes a study of the two most popular plagiarism-detection software platforms available on today's market—Turnitin (http://www.turnitin.com/static/index.html) and SafeAssign (http://www.safeassign.com/). After a brief discussion of plagiarism's relevance to librarians, the authors examine plagiarism-detection methodology and conduct a review of the current literature regarding plagiarism-detection efficacy. To evaluate detection efficacy for Turnitin and SafeAssign, the authors constructed a brief study in which twenty sample papers containing portions of plagiarized material were submitted to each platform. The results show that Turnitin had the highest overall success at plagiarism detection with an 82.4 percent detection rate. Additionally, both platforms had a combined false-positive detection rate of 16.8 percent. Multidisciplinary electronic databases are increasingly relied upon to compile evidence for original research and systematic reviews; however, little is known about how these services influence the visibility of kinesiology research. Citation metrics, index coverage, and subject categories of 100 kinesiology-related journals were examined using the 2020 Journal Citation Reports™ service of Clarivate Web of Science™ (WoS). Most of the journals were assigned subject categories emphasizing biomedical and multidisciplinary sciences, rather than humanities and behavioral/social sciences by WoS. WoS journal citation data were substantially skewed and there was incomplete indexing of articles in these journals, with journal issues typically unindexed for 5–11 years and more. There were substantial differences in median citation rates across the subdisciplines and subject categories of these journals. There is bias in the WoS coverage, indexing, subject categories, and citations to research published in kinesiology journals. Multiple databases should be carefully searched to ensure scholars find and utilize the breadth and depth of evidence and knowledge published in kinesiology journals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractCustomer relationship management (CRM) describes the standards that a company adheres to when interacting with customers. This bibliometric analysis will draw the attention of researchers toward CRM. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, CRM has become a relevant topic for all marketers, whether online or offline. This study will also help to evaluate the relationships between various articles and the degree of cooperation among various authors, universities, and countries in the field of CRM studies to determine the sustainability and trending topics in various fields of CRM and CRM strategies on customers’ purchase intentions over the period 2000 to 2022. Biblioshiny, a web-based tool for bibliometric analysis, was used in this study to analyze a sample of 828 papers pulled from the Scopus database and the Web of Science between 2000 and 2022 that contained the keywords “customer relationship management,” “customer relationship management strategies” to identify the development and trending topics in customer relationships. The phrase “customer relationship management” is strongly connected to many other terms like “customer relationship management strategies,” “CRM,” “customer satisfaction,” “e-CRM,” “customer loyalty,” and many more that have emerged as important subtopics in this discipline over the past 2 decades. Understanding the scholarly impact of social work research can inform strategies to strengthen the profession's research foundations. This study examined research productivity and academic impact using h-indexes for a sample of 112 Australian social work researchers according to the stage of their career. Annual research output was calculated using Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) data. The average h-index for all social work researchers in the sample was 6.39 (Scopus) and 12.5 (Google Scholar). Web of Science was not used due to the number of inaccurate researcher profiles. One hundred and thirty-nine publications received 100 or more citations, but there were many never-cited publications. A social work benchmark for the number of publications is around 1.4 publications per year, depending upon a person's stage of career and workload profile. Citation analysis can supplement peer review in evaluating research quality, but there are disciplinary differences in publication and citation practices, so it is useful to know where social work is positioned. IMPLICATIONS Citation analysis is used to assess research productivity and quality alongside qualitative assessment, such as peer review. It is imperative for researchers to check, correct, and claim Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science records, and to link these to their ORCID profile. A citation benchmark for social work would be in the range of h-index 3.2 for early-career researchers to 15.8 for research-focused positions (Scopus) or h-index 6.1–25.0 (Google Scholar). Internet of Things (IoT) has gradually become one of the most popular topics among both academia and industry, and it is considered as a crucial part of future Internet. However, very few objective and systematic review was conducted to address high-value articles and summarize the intellectual components from journals for examination and identification of the intellectual core and structure of IoT. Therefore, this study conducted a co-citation analysis for IoT by using 68 high-value articles retrieved within 1457 source papers from Web of Science online database. By using factor analysis, ten critical factors were identified, which includes (1) frameworks and challenges of IoT; (2) current situation of IoT in different applications; (3) interactions of IoT; (4) security issues of IoT; (5) application domains of IoT; (6) data management of IoT; (7) IoT in product lifecycle management; (8) enabling technologies of IoT; (9) IoT in smart cities; (10) IoT in recommender systems. Hierarchical Custer Analysis and Multidimensional Scaling were used to graphically illustrate the intellectual elements of IoT. In the current findings, fundamental elements of IoT including architectural framework, enabling technologies, network communication, data management, and IoT interactions were discussed with a series of challenges for wider and deeper IoT applications. The Tourism Recreation Research (TRR) is a leading international journal in the domain of 'marketing', 'logistics' and 'tourism' since 1976. Using a bibliometric approach, the bibliographic data of all the documents (articles, notes, and reviews) published in TRR from 1976 to 2018 have been analysed. This study has primarily focused on the key indicators like the number of annual publications, citations, most cited papers, most productive authors, and the diversity of institutions and countries that have published documents in TRR. This paper considers how Liverpool's year of European Capital of Culture (ECoC) with a focus on altering the image and perceptions of place allowed a heightened sense of awareness of local identity. Drawing on data gathered through ethnographic approaches at a small-scale arts workshop in the city centre and through considering visual imagery, stereotypes and myths of the city, the paper argues that image and identity are relationally different. Using theories of performativity and performance it finds that local people, due to the rebranding of the city and concerted efforts of promoting Liverpool during this year, are able to cite aspects of their cultural identity whilst leaving space for creativity and improvisation. The emergent process of identity performance and imaging a city are able to reflect upon one another creating a nuanced understanding of lived identities in the midst of a large-scale cultural event. Publications on rankings are often found in journals from various fields, including tourism and hospitality. A few scholars have written articles that include league tables for ranking individual researchers, apart from research papers, on their theoretical or methodological contributions. These articles rank the most prolific or top-cited authors on a list based on the publication or citation frequency of individuals in a set of selected journals and within a specific time period. This paper examines Samsung Electronics' catch-up with Sony in terms of technological capabilities and investigates the various aspects of the change in the two firms' technological characteristics in the course of the catch-up. Using the US patents of the two firms as a basis, this paper finds that in terms of the quantity of patents, Samsung Electronics' catch-up with Sony happened around the mid-1990s, and in terms of the quality of patents, Samsung Electronics' catch-up occurred earlier, at the beginning of the 1990s. In addition, Samsung Electronics has come to be more independent from Sony, proving that Samsung Electronics has gone beyond simply imitating and applying Sony's technology. This paper also analyzes the other aspects of catch-up, namely the generality and the originality of the knowledge base, technology cycle and appropriability. Samsung Electronics caught up with Sony in terms of sales, corporate value and brand value only after the 2000s. Our study shows that technological catch-up precedes the catch-up in other dimensions. The valuation of intangible assets, such as patents, has recently been considered an important technique for R&D strategies. This paper proposes a citation analysis as a method of valuation on patent clusters having patent networks. A citation analysis is a method that examines the value of a patent on the basis of the number of citations of references. In particular, a co-citation analysis is used for coupling patents as the patent cluster and valuating the patent cluster. While the co-citation analysis is of great interest as a method of valuation, this analysis has not been fully examined and does not define any framework for a technology transition and patent strategy. Therefore, in this paper, the conventional co-citation analysis for evaluating the patent clusters is enhanced and frameworks for the technology transition and patent strategy are proposed by analysing citation routes in a co-citation analysis. Purpose: There is an abundance of articles published on low–grade glioma. The aim of this study was to identify and review the 50 most-cited articles on low-grade glioma, and to perform a bibliometric analysis. Methods: In June 2017, we performed a basic search of the Web of Science database using "low-grade glioma management and/or treatment" as our search terms without publication date restrictions. The top 50 most-cited articles were obtained and reviewed. Results: The top 50 most-cited articles received a mean 195 citations per paper, with 571 citations being the most and 81 citations being the least. Publication dates ranged from 1992 to 2013. The articles were published in 17 journals and Journal of Neurosurgery published the greatest number of articles (10 of 50), followed by Journal of Clinical Oncology (9 of 50). The most frequent study categories were natural history studies (19 of 50) and laboratory studies (13 of 50). Neurosurgery as a specialty contributed to 22 articles. The majority of the articles originated in the United States (44%). Conclusion: We identified the top 50 most-cited articles on low-grade glioma and the level of knowledge about this topic has been increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper questions the current concept of quality as used in research assessment rankings and peer review, with special reference to the link often established between impact and the way this impact is measured in the form of citation counting. Taking translation studies as a case study, we will offer a two-level approach to reveal both the macro- and micro-level biases that exist in this regard. We will first review three key aspects related to the idea of the quality of publications, namely peer review, journal indexing, and journal impact factor. We will then pinpoint some of the main macro-level problems regarding current practices and criteria as applied to translation studies, such as Thomson Reuters World of Science's journal coverage, citation patterns, and publication format. In order to discuss how to advance sustainability in engineering, it is necessary to be clear as to what exactly is the science of sustainability. The linkage between sustainability philosophy and scientific principles has, in some ways, been acknowledged in the wider literature. Moreover, the recent scholarship on sustainability in international literature has focused on providing definitions, policies and methods, though from an engineering perspective, there is an obvious need for clarity on how the engineering and science community can integrate the science of sustainability into practice. Prima facie, this article provides an overview of the development of sustainability science through a textual analysis to collate the underlying discourse and ideology cited in literature. While the number one sustainability challenge is to mitigate climate change, compiling a definition genesis of sustainability will assist the engineering community in gaining an understanding in the underlying philosophical frames. Patent citation data are used in a growing body of economics and business research on technological diffusion. Until now, there exists little evidence on whether patent citations are a good measure of knowledge flows. Our paper assesses the legitimacy of using European patent citations as a measure of technology flows. It uses information from the Community Innovation Survey collected by the French Service des Statistiques Industrielles (SESSI), which contain firms’ responses to questions about their innovative activity. We show that patent citations are indeed related to firms’ statements about their acquisition and dispersion of new technology, but that the strength and statistical significance of this relationship varies across geographical regions and across channels of knowledge diffusion. The growth of mega-journals has also brought about changes in authorship. This study uses collected data to identify the transitions of mega-journal publishing and changes of authorship. For authors interested in publishing in mega-journals, the publication of South Korean authors in these mega-journals is specifically sampled and checked, revealing that mega-journals are increasingly the targets for publication. Some mega-journals have an impact factor even if they have only been publishing for 5–10 years. Ten out of 12 SCIE mega-journals collected in this study show a high impact factor, which is above average. Furthermore, the number of articles published by South Korean authors in major mega-journals is also on the rise. The result of this study will be useful for mega-journal editors, who are keen to know what factors influence author choice of journals, and for those who attempt to predict what impact mega-journals will have on scholarly journal publishing in the future. The transition from further to higher education is marked by a series of challenges for the new student, not least the requirement to learn the discourse of academic practice, and referencing as a part of that. By perceiving what it means to reference, students should also come to understand what it means to write, including the problematic areas of authorship and ownership of ideas. Academic writing and paraphrasing are demanding concepts that require the student writer to enter into the academic discourse and relinquish their hold on the worlds of a text and embrace instead the argument behind them, in a form of ‘language-game’. Taking an interpretative, dialogic approach to referencing, the inherent playfulness of learning is emphasised through the use of Lego, used as a metaphor for the students' construction of meaning and to exemplify the discipline of citation and attribution. This paper outlines a method that metaphorically and literally enables students to construct and make visible the underlying theoretical philosophy of referencing and plagiarism by using Lego as a mode of authorship, in the context of the nature of academic discourse and what it means to write. Narratives express and constrain what we might say about experience. In this paper, I want to explain how Janet Frame (1924–2004) was conditioned by her mother to learn and use pre-agreed narratives of family history, the accurate performance of which became the condition of the author's validity as a family member. Drawing on the work of Judith Butler on the citational self, I aim to show the tension between Frame's desire to become a writer of her own making and the constraint found in her early environment, in particular her mother's wish that her daughter should stick to ritualistic repetitions of established narratives. To do so, I will chronicle Frame's developmental journey, described in her autobiography, and using a Butlerian framework, I will explain how Frame finds a distinctive way to cite her own subjectivity. Two main streams of research performance evaluation rely on quantitative measurement of research output and citation count. Although research output counting has achieved a certain degree of success, such an approach cannot assess the impact of a publication on knowledge development. A citation count, in contrast, measures the influence of a publication on subsequent research efforts. Citation count has thus become an important way to represent research performance. This study analyzes the uncited articles published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research and the Journal of Travel & Tourism Marketing in the period 1996–2005. In this paper I argue that the visual discourse of archaeological illustration tends to present a specific perspective of the relationship between aesthetics and memory and that this determines how we conceptualize these issues in relation to archaeological artefacts. I examine the historical background of this discourse and offer an alternative conceptualization of the relationship between aesthetics and memory by drawing on the twin concepts of citation and oeuvre. As a means of examining the relationship between contemporary practices and those of the past I discuss the similarities and differences between the production of archaeological illustrations and their dissemination in the archaeological corpus and the production and deposition of a series of artefacts from Earlier Bronze Age Scotland. This paper argues that Ben Lerner's discussions of poetry and poetics in his two acclaimed novels,Leaving the Atocha Stationand10.04, have not received the serious attention they deserve. Here, I examine the novels as clear extensions of Lerner's poetic project as seen in his three volumes of ‘verse', and link them to the theoretical discussions of poetics one finds in the prose of poets like Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Dickinson, or Pound. This in turn opens the way to seeing Lerner as engaged in an ongoing project in which neither prose nor poetry is privileged, but each dialogues with the other in what must be considered a serial prosimetrum. Following from this, I examine how the prose writings illuminate and enact the poetics of virtuality which Lerner favours and explores in many ways, not least of which being the displacement of poetry and poetics into novels, and the disturbing of the claims generally made for each genre. Ultimately, Lerner's opposition to ‘mere actuality’ or ‘mere positivity’ can only be understood if his novels are allowed to be disturbed by the volumes of poetry that surround them, rather than being left to stand as copious containers that might bound the poetic impulse. Scholars from many fields have been writing about homosexual interpretations of Batman for more than 60 years. This research investigates the relationship between scholarly writing on the subject and the comics, films and other media that make up the Batman franchise. The analysis is done through the lens of a bibliographic citation analysis. The goal is to investigate which portions of the franchise influence discussion most and better understand how authors approached the subject from a research perspective. The results revealed that the writing on the topic is focused on a very small subset of materials, and materials reprinted in a few bound editions played an oversized role. It was also discovered that this phenomenon is largely about comics. Authors did not figure newer media forms such as animation and videogames into their writing. Other trends were discovered, such as a move towards better citation in scholarly writing in more recent work, and evidence was discovered that points towards a relationship between the accessibility of material and its influence. This essay reviews the changing functions, and effects, of citation systems in scholarly research as they move from a range of uses primarily oriented around knowledge networking and epistemic validation, to their use as a set of metrics oriented around evaluating and rewarding certain kinds of academic performance (e.g. “impact factors”). It is argued that this shift of emphasis has a distorting effect on the uses of citations, and that the more important these metrics become, the more distorting it is. Specifically, it is argued that rewarding certain kinds of citational practices leads to “gaming” the system: this makes the use of these metrics actually less reliable – and in some cases counterproductive – and leads to what in the author’s view are self-serving and sometimes unethical behaviours. This article examines the teaching of information literacy skills to accounting students through a case study in which the authors, an accounting professor and a business librarian, collaborated to address students’ lack of knowledge about finding and incorporating credible, valid, and accurate sources of information into their research. Together, the authors developed a class project that required students in a governmental and nonprofit accounting class to identify a critical issue in the field, research the background of the issue, form an opinion, and, ultimately, select information sources that support their findings and arguments. The students then participated in a peer review process where they evaluated the work of their classmates. Using an information literacy score computed based on an analysis of student bibliographies, a statistically significant improvement from students’ first to final drafts was found. In addition, it was found that students became more comfortable evaluating the credibility, accuracy, and validity of sources over the course of the project. Despite the tremendous economic potential of the Brazilian, Russian, Indian, and Chinese (BRIC) economies, few studies have compared technological innovation in these countries. This study investigates three main issues related to technological innovation in BRICs: 1) indicators of technological innovation were evaluated and used to compare capability of technological innovation between the four countries; 2) differences in innovative configurations were mapped based on constructs of "fundamental vs. applied innovation "and "incremental vs. radical innovation "; 3) the absolute and relative innovative strengths of these four countries were examined in 31 different technological fields. The empirical findings are based on analysis of a patent and citation data set comprising all utility patents granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to BRIC inventors from 1976 to 2006. Targeted instruction that teaches international students about plagiarism is an important service that academic libraries can offer. Offering such instruction as an asynchronous, online workshop has distinct benefits in terms of flexibility and ease of learning, but it must be designed with the needs of international students in mind. This study describes one library's online anti-plagiarism workshop, as well as the results of a qualitative study to determine how such a workshop can best be designed to meet the needs of international students. Although rarely considered within the existing scholarship on social movements, even a cursory analysis of protest activity suggests that movements regularly invoke historical citations (whether consciously or not) while working to clarify aims and mobilize constituencies. In order to make sense of this process, and to account for the variations that arise among the different citation modalities favored by movements on opposite ends of the political spectrum, I draw upon the theoretical contributions of Marxist cultural critic Walter Benjamin and, in particular, on his exploration of 'wish images' and 'dialectical images,' their attributes, and their interrelationship. According to Benjamin, such images summoned the past either to project visions of future happiness (as with the wish image) or to deposit the witness before a moment of decisive, present-tense reckoning. After outlining the role of historical citation in social movements and in the broader cultural field through which these movements find expression, I analyze two recent protest events – the 'Unite the Right' rally in Charlottesville, VA, in which wish images were actively deployed, and the 2017 Women's Strike in New York City, where a dialectical image arose from the constellated nodes of the march's route – to consider the relationship between citation modality and protest outcome. Following from this analysis, and in keeping with the unapologetically partisan nature of my investigation, I conclude by advancing some strategic recommendations for movements seeking – as Benjamin once enjoined – to 'improve our position in the struggle against Fascism.' This study examines the trajectory of inline and block quotation over the period in which HTML has undergone standardisation, from the introduction of the blockquote element to the HTML 1.0 specification (1993) to the current HTML 5 standard. The focus of the study is the distinct difference between the web's current quotation practices and the legacy rule for short versus longer quotations as mandated by the body of academic style guides that began to emerge from the early 20th century. Working from a wide range of heterogeneous sources, the academic length-differentiated quotation rule is tracked from its inception, through its establishment as the academic norm in print, through its faithful remediation for digital workflows by the proximate antecedent of HTML, the leading SGML applications in text processing of the nineteen-eighties and early nineties. The consecutive hybridisation of block quotation with the text elements of the epigraph and the pullquote in the course of HTML's standardisation process is treated as a misremediation that needlessly abandons continuity and vitiates the academic legacy's virtues of clarity and coherence. Thirty years ago the Women and Criminal Justice (WCJ) journal was founded to provide a venue for the publication of articles by and about women as they interacted with the criminal justice system. A particular focus was given to how patriarchy defined that experience for women caught up in the system as the victimized, accused and convicted, women professionals who worked in the system and women (and men) academics who studied both groups. In our research we reviewed nearly 30 years of articles with special attention to their treatment of gender, feminism, and intersectionality. We found that from the first WCJ was open to the "intersectional" lives of women, and that race, class, and gender influenced the experiences of women as offenders, victims, and practitioners. The objective of this study is to compare the quantity of citations that retracted and nonretracted articles received in engineering based on articles indexed in the Web of Science database and published between 1945 and 2015. For data analysis, the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences was used along with the Kolmogorov–Smirnov, Mann–Whitney, Tukey–Kramer tests and descriptive statistics. The data set included 238 retracted and 236 nonretracted articles, with the retracted articles cited 2,348 times and nonretracted articles cited 2,957 times. As such, they represent a powerful way in which practitioners constitute themselves and others within a scholarly field. This article studies the citational practices of articles published in the Journal of Jewish Education over a 10-year period in order to discover how scholars have constituted the field of research in Jewish Education. Using social network analysis and qualitative examination, this article presents an unprecedented portrait of the field of knowledge including its strengths and new directions for scholarly investigation and analysis of how the field of research in Jewish education has been formed, and how citational references have shaped how scholars and practitioners understand what we know about Jewish education. Analysis of how cultural heritage institutions' (CHI) digital assets are being cited on Wikipedia can be beneficial to understanding user needs and interests as well as priorities for collection development and digitization. This case study details an analysis of Wikipedia links to online resources from Louisiana cultural heritage institutions in order to determine what types of cultural heritage resources users are citing on Wikipedia, what is the content of the Wikipedia articles with Louisiana CHI citations, and how this can influence the work of CHI. The results of the study include findings that digital library items and archival finding aids are the most cited sources from cultural heritage institutions on Wikipedia and are particularly popular for Louisiana-specific Wikipedia articles on society and the social sciences and culture and the arts. This essay analyzes Lyle Ashton Harris's large-format Polaroid, Billie #21, as a site to think about the epistemological transformations that surface thinking or thinking with the flesh enables. It does so by focusing on the surface aesthetics of shine, Harris's citation of Holiday, and the politics of engaging with black femininity. These surface tensions, the essay argues, show us ways to think about the relationship between self, performativity, and brown jouissance - that mysterious fleshiness that resists legibility but hovers on the surface.
