There is an increased need for accessible psychosocial interventions that support both people with dementia and their spouses. Recent research demonstrates the benefits of music therapy and caregiver-delivered music therapy for this population. This paper contributes to the emerging evidence base on telehealth music therapy for people with dementia outside of a COVID-19 era when in-person services were available. This exploratory phenomenological study explores the experiences of two couples who attended a six-week telehealth music therapy programme via two detailed case examples. Online semi-structured interviews with each couple were conducted pre and post intervention and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Three shared themes emerged from the data analysis including (1) social isolation and lack of confidence linked to dementia diagnosis is worsened in rural locations, (2) song singing and song writing enables us to revisit happy memories, and (3) telehealth delivery increases access due to geographical location. The findings are presented in a narrative case study format to provide rich detailed descriptions of the music therapy programme and to illuminate the experiences of the participants. In both examples, telehealth delivery expanded access to music therapy (which was otherwise unavailable) and stimulated reminiscence which in turn encouraged meaningful engagement between the couple. The delivery of music therapy via telehealth, alongside in-person delivery, has the potential to expand access to music therapy to those who may not have access to or are no longer able to attend community support services due to geographical location, increased cognitive decline or reduced mobility. The successful delivery of telehealth music therapy is dependent on several factors including digital literacy, access to appropriate technological devices, caregiver support and level of cognitive decline. Alternative education provision in Ireland is under-researched. This paper is a qualitative investigation of the perspectives of a purposive sample of ten teachers on curriculum, pedagogy and assessment in their respective alternative settings of a voluntary education centre, a Youthreach centre and a post-primary special school. Dual Sensory Loss and learning disability is a historically neglected area of social work practice. This paper presents one element of a research study conducted with a health and social care provider in Northern Ireland. It explored staff experiences of assessing adults and children with a dual sensory loss and learning disability. Two sensory disability team managers, eight social workers and two rehabilitation officers were interviewed across sensory disability, learning disability and children with disability teams. Current levels of engagement and ways in which more inclusive services and practices could be developed were explored. Staff views indicate that there is minimal engagement between staff and service users with unique, complex needs. Staff use a range of tools, resources and skills in an attempt to promote inclusion and engagement. The paper concludes that to promote engagement staff need to develop their practice, making effective use of tools and resources. Staff skills and knowledge can be enhanced through training which is targeted, relevant and specific. There needs to be commitment to sharing good practice and cascading learning throughout teams. Mental health nursing in the forensic services is perceived as stressful as there is often a tension between therapeutic and custodial processes. Clinical supervision has been discussed as a support strategy for nurses. The aim of this paper is to explore forensic mental health nurses understanding of clinical supervision and their perception of its utility within their practice. A qualitative descriptive method was used and 10 mental health nurses were interviewed with the aid of an interview guide. Qualitative data was analysed using a thematic approach culminating in the emergence of three themes. Participants talked about the tension between caring and custodial roles within the forensic services which was stressful and created difficulties in the maintenance of a therapeutic relationship. Clinical supervision was seen as a necessary support to assist nurses working in the forensic services. The findings support the premise that there is a tension between therapeutic and custodial practices. Acknowledgement of the complexities of working within the forensic services and the provision of clinical supervision within a confidential, non-judgemental relationship may assist nurses in the provision of care and the maintenance of therapeutic relationships. This paper provides an evaluation of the Heart of Living and Dying (HLD) Initiative. This initiative is a group process that attempts to bring Advance Care Planning (ACP) into the public domain. It encourages participants to consider what matters to them in their living along with their hopes, preferences, and wishes for their final years and end-of-life care. An inductive, interpretive, and naturalistic approach allowed the researcher to study these phenomena in their natural setting i.e., the community. This qualitative study used 5 focus groups with 17 people and employed thematic data analysis to identify key themes. All participants in the HLD speak from a personal perspective irrespective of any professional background. It transpired that 16 respondents worked in health and social care, which subsequently became noteworthy in the findings. Three key themes were identified: (a) feeling emotionally safe enough to have such sensitive conversations is vital; (b) participating in the HLD process increases the confidence of those participants who worked in health and social care, to undertake ACP conversations and (c) planning ahead is a complex, staged process rather than a single record-making event. The Covid-19 pandemic crisis reinforced the need to upstream ACP initiatives such as the HLD, as the norm for everyone, since all of us will one day die. It is recommended that the HLD be incorporated within ACP training given that the experiential nature of it and the use of groups was reported to build confidence in facilitating ACP conversations. Physical inactivity levels are rising globally. In response, public health investigators have sought to design and implement effective interventions to raise levels of physical activity in populations, communities and individuals. Usually, such interventions are built around theories of behaviour change in which notions of motivation and incentivisation loom large. Drawing on focus group evidence derived in the context of a cluster RCT aimed at increasing levels of physical activity in the workplace, this paper offers a critical look at the factors that seemingly stimulate and sustain that activity. In particular, using novel methods of data analysis we illustrate how motives and motivation – often interpreted as a driving force 'in' individuals – can be more usefully seen as distributed; as a property of systems (incorporating technologies, organisational structures, and social interaction) rather than of persons. In our discussion, we outline various theoretical as well as empirical grounds for making such claims and conclude by drawing out the implications of our work for public health policy and research. Background: This paper reports on a research study to inform the development of a specialist role to support front line public health nurses (PHNs) working with vulnerable families and at risk children in Ireland. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the position of a leading role and explore the implications of such change. Methods: Focus group and semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with ten purposively selected participants in public health nursing, social work and a nongovernmental children's organisation working in disadvantaged areas in Dublin. Results: Assistant directors of public health nursing are in a key position to inform decisions regarding the children's services. Conclusion: Access to support and appropriate supervision are fundamental resource requirements for PHNs who work with vulnerable families and at risk children. The supervision of undergraduate social work students on placement is fundamental to their development as 50% of the BSc (Hons) social work degree in the UK comprises practice learning, which is widely acknowledged as the signature pedagogy of the profession. In Northern Ireland practice learning opportunities are supervised by practice teachers. To ensure a consistent quality and supply of practice teachers a Master's programme offering approximately 35 places per year is delivered at Ulster University. The trainee practice teachers had to navigate working on the front line through the COVID 19 pandemic, post graduate study and the professional supervision and assessment of undergraduate social work students on placement. This article presents evidence from a small scale qualitative study evaluating the practice teaching programme conducted with 22 trainee practice teachers. Respondents were asked to complete a semi structured online survey. The evaluation sought their perceptions regarding the duality of their unique experience as a gatekeeper to the profession and student managing the unprecedented challenges of assessing the competence of social work students on placement. Several themes emerged including assessing competence, the student experience and support from the practice assessor. A further outcome was the creation of a Peer Learning Bubble Model. Most initial teacher education (ITE) programmes claim to develop reflective practitioners. Peer review is one means of developing reflective practice. In this study, Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Physical Education (PE) students engaged in a process of peer review to investigate how reviewees used feedback from reviewers to inform their reflections. Eleven post-lesson feedback audio recorded discussions were collected along with 11 reflection templates and 2 focus group interviews. In response to both low-quality and high-quality feedback received, students' reflections were low-quality (pre-reflective and surface level) and/or high-quality (pedagogical). None reflected at the highest, critical, level. Students valued the peer review process, with some noting that the feedback often triggered deeper reflection, whilst for others the feedback was accepted uncritically. The process also allowed for sharing of ideas and for some reviewers, it triggered deeper thinking about their practice. Results are discussed in relation to developing students' reflective practice. This study analyses the experiences of youth workers in dealing with challenging behaviour among young people. The findings from a qualitative approach to the collection and analysis of data from 45 research participants are presented. The paper begins by briefly exploring the context of youth work in Ireland and outlining the research process. This is followed by a discussion of the nature of challenging behaviours experienced by youth workers including the emergent area of challenging behaviour involving new technology. Other significant themes arising from the research data are discussed. These include issues such as the audience factor, the importance of individual work, the significance of understanding background factors leading to difficult behaviour, and the need to support staff through challenging encounters. Vocal load related to heavy voice use in particular professions increases the risk of occupational voice disorders. Research on professional voice use has primarily focused on educators, singers, and call-centre advisors. This paper describes the daily experiences of professional soccer managers' occupational voice use through qualitative methods. Four global themes were identified: 1) voice uses, 2) factors affecting voice change, 3) impact of voice use, and 4) the importance of voice in soccer management. All describe the nature of soccer managers' vocal demands. Risk factors for voice disorders include intense and prolonged voice use in environments with adverse acoustic properties for speakers and poor phonation methods. Contemporary health policy increasingly positions responsibility for the management of health with the individual which reflects newer neo-liberal discourses of health. Such an approach can be seen as problematic in the context of men's health, with men tending to be seen as largely 'irresponsible' towards their own health. This paper addresses this question by drawing on qualitative data on how men conceptualise responsibility for health. Whilst the desire to be responsible for health was borne by most of the men in the study, this was not always reflected in practice. There was also evidence of strategies that men adopted for either divesting themselves of responsibility for health or for legitimising lack of responsibility. In some instances, acting 'irresponsibly' was what defined participants as 'real men'. The implications of these findings for men's health policy are discussed with specific reference to the recent publication of Ireland's National Men's Health Policy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of our research is to analyse career dissatisfaction through the psychoanalytical lens of Jacques Lacan. Taking a multiple-case study approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven male, senior managers working in the highly competitive technology industry. We found that respondents are defining satisfaction against a socially constructed career system that obliterates the concept of an agentic self. By grounding our qualitative investigation in the research fields of career and career dissatisfaction in the under-researched realm of Lacanian theory, we extend career theory to include a psychodynamic lens. We also contribute to practice by providing an alternative approach to career counselling that encourages the client to co-construct a sense of liberation and empowerment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A high prevalence of smoking has been reported among people receiving care within inpatient and forensic mental health services. An Irish inpatient mental health service introduced a "smoke free campus" policy in 2018. Six semi-structured interviews were completed with patients within this setting in 2019. Using thematic analysis, five themes were identified: Experience of stakeholder support, routine, experience of being an inpatient, the meaning of smoking, and the experience and perception of the smoking policy and governing bodies. To address the lack of research on the information needs of spinal cord injured (SCI) patients and family members in acute care, in order to inform the provision of appropriate information supports. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven traumatic SCI patients and six family members. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyse and interpret the data. Five themes were generated: (1) "You were lying in limbo and you knew nothing" describes how being situated in non-specialist acute care limited participants' access to information; (2) "You'll never walk again" is not enough describes the need for information about the effects of SCI and the management of secondary conditions; (3) "The delivery was awful" demonstrates the importance of information being explained clearly and empathically; (4) "It was going in one ear and out the other" highlights the need for ongoing conversations with healthcare professionals, as retaining information provided in the early stages post-injury is often difficult; and (5) "Hope" not "false hope" discusses the importance of giving patients and family members hope while simultaneously being realistic about potential recovery. SCI patients and family members had significant unmet information needs in acute care. SCI patients and family members had significant unmet information needs while in acute care. Being in non-specialist acute care significantly limited most participants' access to information. During the acute phase of care, most patients and family members would like to know the patient's recovery prognosis, the impact of SCI on the patient's functional independence, how to manage secondary complications, and what to expect in rehabilitation. As patients and family members often had difficulty absorbing information in the early stages post-injury, information should be continuously repeated, reinforced and clarified. HCPs should promote realistic hope for SCI patients and family members even in the absence of neurological recovery, by focusing on what the patient is still capable of while being honest about their prognosis. This qualitative study explored healthcare professionals' views in relation to the potential expansion of cardiac rehabilitation services to include stroke patients, thereby becoming a cardiovascular rehabilitation model. 23 semi-structured interviews were completed with hospital and community-based stroke and cardiac rehabilitation professionals in Switzerland (n = 7) and Ireland (n = 19). The sample comprised physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, stroke physicians, cardiologists, psychologists, dieticians and nurses. Interviews were audio-recorded and the transcripts were analysed in NVivo using inductive Thematic Analysis. Barriers and facilitators to cardiovascular rehabilitation were captured under four broad themes; (i) Cardiac rehabilitation as "low-hanging fruit," (ii) Cognitive impairment ("the elephant in the room"), (iii) Adapted cardiac rehabilitation for mild stroke, and (iv) Resistance to change. Hybrid cardiac rehabilitation programmes could be tailored to deliver stroke-specific education, exercises and multidisciplinary expertise. Post-stroke cognitive impairment was identified as a key barrier to participation in cardiac rehabilitation. A cognitive rehabilitation intervention could potentially be delivered as part of cardiac rehabilitation, to address the cognitive needs of stroke and cardiac patients. The cardiac rehabilitation model has the potential to be expanded to include mild stroke patients given the commonality of secondary prevention needs. Up to half of stroke survivors are affected by post-stroke cognitive impairment, consequently mild stroke patients may not be such an "easy fit" for cardiac rehabilitation. A cardiovascular programme which includes common rehabilitation modules, in addition to stroke- and cardiac-specific content is recommended. A cognitive rehabilitation module could potentially be added as part of the cardiac rehabilitation programme to address the cognitive needs of stroke and cardiac patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This qualitative study explored the digital communication skills assistance provided by young adults in the age range 18 to 25 years to older family members during the period of the first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in Ireland in 2020. Data were collected from a sample of young adults (n = 248) using an online survey instrument to explore their learnings from the intergenerational exchange. The study found that young adults who assisted their older family members considered the learning experience to be successful and were rewarded with reciprocal benefits. This study contributes to the field of intergenerational research by exploring the perspectives of young adults involved in an intergenerational exchange to support the digital skills of their older adult family members in Ireland. Background. Dealing with work related stress is a declared priority of European Union mental health policy. A particularly under-researched sector in this regard is the community vocational support sector for people with mental health and intellectual disability problems. Aims. To report on the organisational profile of the vocational support and rehabilitation sector forpeople with mental health and intellectual disabilities as this relates to occupational stress, in five European countries (Austria, Ireland, Italy, Romania and UK). Methods. A sector profile questionnaire was distributed to representative organisations in five countries and a short face-to-face survey was conducted with 25 local managers (five from each country) to draw up a profile and facilitate a comparative description and analysis. Results. It was found that there is no national and European data collected at any level in this sector upon which to base effective policy interventions to combat occupational stress specific to professionals working in this sector. Results indicate that the sector in a number of the countries sampled does not have effective mechanisms in place to deal with occupational stress. Conclusion. Developing effective transnational occupational stress management policy that supports staff working in this sector and measuring its success is greatly impaired by a failure to effectively define the purpose of the sector and collect and collate national data to support it. Short-term study abroad programs are increasingly embraced by Australian schools of social work. These programs improve access to international experiences and have a demonstrable impact on academic outcomes. However, little is known about the factors that influence students who decide to participate in such programs. Using a qualitative semistructured design, eight Australian social work students were interviewed about their perspectives on the pre-application phase of a short-term study abroad program to Ireland that was advertised in early 2018. The findings reveal a number of multilevel structural, institutional, and personal enablers and barriers that impacted their decision to participate. Implications for future research, the tertiary education sector, and social work educators are identified, especially in terms of broader economic and political issues that contradict social justice and render the future of these programs precarious. IMPLICATIONS Short-term study abroad programs offer important learning opportunities for students, but there is a need to understand the dimensions that can impact the decisions of students to participate in these programs. The qualitative findings indicate that various factors impact on the participation of students, especially financial and caring responsibilities. Background: The World Health Organization has launched a program to promote Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology (GATE) to implement those parts of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) referring to assistive technology and products. A particular vulnerable group deeply affected by health inequity affecting access to assistive products are people with intellectual disabilities. Objective: The objective of this study is to understand the barriers and facilitators to effectively access and continuously use essential assistive products for people with intellectual disabilities. Materials and methods: Face-to-face interviews with 15 adults with a mild to profound intellectual disability and 15 providers of assistive products were conducted to gain insights about current use, needs, knowledge, awareness, access, customization, funding, follow-up, social inclusion, stigma and policies around assistive products and intellectual disability. The technique of constant comparative analysis was used to analyze the data. Results and conclusion: An overview of factors is presented that fit within seven domains for access and eight domains for continuous use of assistive products for people with intellectual disabilities. It illustrates that access and continuous use are influenced by different barriers and facilitators. These different influences should be taken into account in country policies and frameworks that seek to implement the UNCRPD through assistive technology. Proactive assessment for assistive products by health professionals is rare and the vast majority of people with intellectual disabilities depend on carers to signal the need. A lack of education for carers around available assistive products and the benefits of assistive products for people with intellectual disabilities may lead to an underutilization for this group. The paternalistic attitude of care providers towards people with intellectual disabilities limits access and use to certain (high-tech) assistive products. The segmented and disjointed aspect of public funding to support assistive products found in this study is a key issue for policymakers who aspire to adhere to implementing the UNCRPD equally in all areas of their country. In this article, we examine the social construction of the home care worker from the perspective of various professionals in the elder care sector in Ireland. The research, using the Grounded Theory method, involved focus groups with 31 participants comprising health and social work professionals as well as care agency managers and policy planners. The social construction of the elder care worker is characterised by ambivalence. We connect the concept of ambivalence at the micro level of human relationships to structural factors that are driving the ambivalence. Ambivalence towards home care workers is shaped by structural factors including the precariousness of care work, the commodification of time, and the stipulated personalisation of services. The irreconcilable contrasts between portrayals of care workers as both 'good' and 'bad' are indicative of deep contradictions in the expectations that contemporary care systems direct at paid caregivers. Ambivalence arises from the commodified and dispensable status of care workers, and fundamental transformations in their training, working conditions and pay are required to move away from this ambivalence and towards care workers' equal status with professionals in the care sector. Using an experiential qualitative design, this study explored 11 female prisoners' perspectives of problems living in prison. The findings reflected the immediate impact of the physical, social, and institutional environment. Problems with drug detoxification and bullying were prevalent. Prisoners were outward-looking and future-focused. Some feared substance-abuse relapse on release while mothers persistently worried about family outside prison. Many used maladaptive strategies to cope with their problems and most used activities to remain occupied. The study recommended creating supportive prison environments and interventions that enable women to manage the everyday problems they experience living in prison. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the extensive literature on the tobacco industry, there has been little attempt to study how transnational tobacco companies (TTCs) coordinate their political activities globally, or to theorise TTC strategies within the context of global governance structures and policy processes. This article draws on three concepts from political science - policy transfer, multi-level governance and venue shifting - to analyse TTCs' integrated, global strategies to oppose augmented packaging requirements across multiple jurisdictions. Following Uruguay's introduction of extended labelling requirements, Australia became the first country in the world to require tobacco products to be sold in standardised ('plain') packaging in 2012. Governments in the European Union, including in the United Kingdom and Ireland, adopted similar laws, with other member states due to follow. TTCs vehemently opposed these measures and developed coordinated, global strategies to oppose their implementation, exploiting the complexity of contemporary global governance arrangements. These included a series of legal challenges in various jurisdictions, alongside political lobbying and public relations campaigns. This article draws on analysis of public documents and 32 semi-structured interviews with key policy actors. It finds that TTCs developed coordinated and highly integrated strategies to oppose packaging restrictions across multiple jurisdictions and levels of governance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reports on findings from a study with recently qualified social workers on the use of social media in their practice. The findings reported here are drawn from a broader study on the use of electronic communications conducted with both newly qualified teachers and social workers. The focus group data reported here provide an insight into the practice realities associated with the use of social media by clients and social workers. The qualitative methodology employed helps to reveal the richness and complexity of technology use in practice. This rich picture reveals multi-directional surveillance, by clients and social workers, facilitated by social media. This includes surveillance by clients taking videos of meetings without consent. The article also highlights situations when social workers themselves consider it acceptable to gather information on clients through social media. The research identifies a range of ethical issues for social workers to navigate and highlights their need for support and guidance in the form of standards, codes, and education and training. The surveillance lens illuminates the ethical dilemmas being faced with reference to concepts such as power, privacy and consent as well as the broader debate of care and control in social work. Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are frequently prescribed for those at risk of malnutrition. Palatability is an important factor in long-term compliance. ONS selection is typically dietitian led, but the degree to which individual perceptions of palatability influence dietitian clinical decision making is unclear. This study aimed to explore factors that influence dietitians' ONS clinical practice, evaluate dietitian hedonic preferences and overall impression of specific ONS products, and study phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) sensitivity in relation to ONS hedonic ratings. Dietitians were recruited from six urban teaching hospitals. They completed a 10-item Clinical Practices Questionnaire prior to taste testing five samples of three ONS products. A 7-point hedonic Likert scale recorded ONS palatability ratings. A PTC test was conducted. Thirty-one dietitians were recruited. Nutritional value, patient palatability, patient acceptability, tolerance and hospital contracts were the factors identified as most likely to influence ONS prescription. All ONS were consistently highly rated for overall impression. The high-protein ONS was most highly rated for all hedonic characteristics. Taste was the highest rated hedonic characteristic across all products. No statistically significant relationship was found between PTC sensitivity and ONS overall impression. The key drivers of ONS dietitian clinical practice were identified. ONS hedonic characteristics and overall impression were highly rated, which suggested this range of products had wide appeal for dietetic professionals. ‘Individualised funding’, which is rooted in the Independent Living Movement, has formed part of a global paradigm shift in support services for disabled people. Against the backdrop of international experience, a political system aligned with the United Kingdom and emergent critics of individualised funding, this article presents findings from an evaluation of four pilot programmes in Ireland. Exemplified by independent-skills development and community integration, these initiatives have been welcomed as a progressive development beyond traditional service provision, with perceived improvements across a range of organisational, personal, health and social care domains. The article explores the importance of ‘natural supports’ and how overly protective behaviour may unintentionally act as a barrier to full implementation. The findings also indicate that unnecessarily complex systems can lead to individual burn-out. Furthermore, a national resource allocation system working in partnership with existing social care professionals and the wider community is recommended, as is learning from overly simplified, group-based ideologies. Background: The School of Nursing at Dublin City University offered a new blended learning Bachelor of Nursing Studies programme in the academic year 2011. Aim: To document the experiences of the academic team making the transition from a face-to-face classroom-delivered programme to the new blended learning format. Method: Academics who delivered the programme were asked to describe their experiences of developing the new programme via two focus groups. Results: Five dominant themes were identified: Staff Readiness; Student Readiness; Programme Delivery and Student Engagement; Assessment of Module Learning Outcomes and Feedback; and Reflecting on the First Year and Thinking of the Future. Face-to-face tutorials were identified as very important to both academics and students. Reservations about whether migrating the programme to an online format encouraged students to engage in additional practices of plagiarism were expressed by some. Student ability/readiness to engage with technology-enhanced learning was an important determinant of their own success academically. The article focuses on challenges faced by people living with HIV in Ireland. Topics discussed include criticism concerning efforts to characterize HIV as a long-term chronic treatable illness; social work services offered to HIV patients who were intravenous drug users (IDUs); and contribution of social workers in hospitals, community care and addiction services to work with and save people diagnosed with HIV.

The social work profession in the United Kingdom is criticized for its reluctance to engage with spirituality. Its absence in Northern Ireland is particularly significant given the role of religion in its political conflict. Drawing upon qualitative research with mental health service users and social workers about religion, spirituality, and mental distress, this article explores the ambivalence that exists around this subject in mental health social work practice. It appears that the political conflict continues to impact social work provision. Support is needed for practitioners and service users to give voice to this aspect of mental well-being. This study comprised one-to-one interviews with 12 mental health social workers and 12 mental health service users. Half of the participants from each group were invited to take part in a telephone interview. Background: Selection tools for medicine must achieve political validity and enjoy stakeholder acceptability. This qualitative study aimed to establish the perspectives of doctors, from various clinical specialities, on HPAT-Ireland, a new selection tool for undergraduate medical students. Methods: Fifteen doctors participated over three iterative cycles of recruitment, interviewing and analysis. Prior to interview, participants sat a practice HPAT-Ireland test. HPAT-Ireland has three sections: (1) Logical reasoning/problem solving; (2) Interpersonal understanding and (3): Non-verbal reasoning. Summary of results: Three themes emerged: job relatedness; utility of HPAT-Ireland and diversity. Sections 1 and 2 were considered very job related however Section 3 was widely criticised for lacking clinical relevance. Doctors did not think that the test would reliably predict future performance. However, one-third felt it was acceptable as a selection tool in conjunction with academic record. Those who found it unacceptable were influenced by its perceived narrow focus, limited job relatedness, potential for socioeconomic bias, impact on gender and potential for negative influence on student diversity. Conclusions: A selection tool that does not enjoy the confidence of the medical profession is unlikely to achieve political validity and may ultimately fail, regardless of other objective measures of its effectiveness such as predictive validity. A national clinical leadership development programme was instituted for Irish nurses and midwives in 2010. Incorporating a development framework and leadership pathway and a range of bespoke interventions for leadership development, including workshops, action-learning sets, mentoring and coaching, the programme was introduced at seven pilot sites in the second half of 2011. The programme pilot was evaluated with reference to structure, process and outcomes elements, including individual-level programme outcomes. Evaluation data were generated through focus groups and group interviews, individual interviews and written submissions. The data provided evidence of nurses' and midwives' clinical leadership development through self and observer-reported behaviours and dispositions including accounts of how the programme participants developed and displayed particular clinical leadership competencies. A key strength of the new programme was that it involved interventions that focussed on specific leadership competencies to be developed within the practice context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article aims to theorize how a sample of menopausal women, lesbian and heterosexual, construct the ending of their periods, and what the experience means for them. Findings indicate that for most of the lesbian participants (who were in a sizeable minority), emotions of loss at the ending of periods were simultaneously expressed alongside positive feelings, and they engaged in greater introspection around the issue than did heterosexual women. However, lesbians did not all take up a singular subject position in relation to menstruation, indicating that there is fragmentation and plurality in how the body is experienced across a group.
