Graphical abstract Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is widely used for the detection of disease biomarkers. However, it utilizes time-consuming procedures and expensive instruments, making it infeasible for point-of-care (POC) analysis especially in resource-limited settings. In this work, a multicolorimetric ELISA biosensor integrated on a paper/polymer hybrid microfluidic device was developed for rapid visual detection of disease biomarkers at point of care, without using costly equipment. This multicolormetric ELISA platform was built on multiple distinct color variants resulted from the catalytic oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and the etching of gold nanorods (AuNRs). The vivid color changes could be easily distinguished by the naked eye, and their red mean values allowed quantitative biomarker detection, without using any sophisticated instruments. When this multicolorimetric ELISA was integrated on a paper/polymer hybrid analytical device, it not only provided integrated processing and high portability but also enabled fast assays in about 50 min due to the unique advantages of paper/polymer hybrid devices. The limit of detection of 9.1 ng/μL of the hepatitis C virus core antigen, a biomarker for hepatitis C, was achieved using this multicolorimetric ELISA platform. This multicolor ELISA analytical device provides a new versatile, user-friendly, affordable, and portable immunosensing platform with high potential for on-site detections of various viruses, proteins, and biomarkers for low-resource settings such as at home, public venues, rural areas, and developing nations. Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) have developed rapidly in recent years, because of their advantages, such as small sample volume, rapid detection rates, low cost, and portability. Due to these characteristics, they can be used for in vitro diagnostics in the laboratory, or in the field, for a variety of applications, including food evaluation, disease screening, environmental monitoring, and drug testing. This review will present various detection methods employed by μPADs and their respective applications for the detection of target analytes. These include colorimetry, electrochemistry, chemiluminescence (CL), electrochemiluminescence (ECL), and fluorescence-based methodologies. At the same time, the choice of labeling material and the design of microfluidic channels are also important for detection results. The construction of novel nanocomponents and different smart structures of paper-based devices have improved the performance of μPADs and we will also highlight some of these in this manuscript. Additionally, some key challenges and future prospects for the use of μPADs are briefly discussed.

Compared with a single chemical indicator, the use of multivariate chemical indicators in aging status assessment of transformer cellulose paper insulation can improve the reliability of the evaluation. In this study, a non-destructive method based on multivariate chemical indicators was proposed to evaluate the remaining life of cellulosic paper insulation. The selected chemical indicators closely related to the aging of the insulating paper were analyzed. Additionally, by applying the subjective and objective weighting method, the evaluation information of each indicator was fully extracted to obtain reasonable comprehensive evaluation weights. Besides, the comprehensive evaluation index of multivariate chemical indicators was obtained by using the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution method, which is consistent with the deterioration law of paper insulation. Then, the correlation lifespan model between the comprehensive evaluation index of multivariate chemical indicators and the degree of polymerization of insulating paper under different aging stages was established. The effectiveness of the proposed model was verified by experiments. This promising model can increase the accuracy of the condition assessment for the transformer cellulosic paper insulation.

Process-monitoring laboratories in the pulp and paper industry generally use a combination of wet chemical analyses and physical measurements to certify the fitness of a production pulp for a specific end-use. These laboratory tests require time and the effort of trained personnel, limiting their utility for real-time process control. Here we show that Raman probes of unrefined cellulosic pulps, well-suited to the online measurement of in-process materials, can predict the quality attributes of manufactured papers. The accuracy of prediction improves when the covariance is modelled in a reduced measurement space selected by a data-driven, feature-selection technique referred to as a Template Oriented Genetic Algorithm (TOGA). TOGA, combined with discrete wavelet transform (DWT), isolates functional-group features that correlate best with mechanical properties paper derived from refined pulp. Paper makers refine market pulps to build sheet strength using a beating process that decreases freeness as it increases fibre-fibre bonding. Methods demonstrated here predict manufactured sheet properties obtainable after any specified degree of refining from the Raman spectrum of an unrefined pulp. This analysis capacity will enable both vendors of market pulp and makers of sheet paper to specify in advance the amount of beating required to produce a desired product, thereby saving cost and conserving resources.

This paper presents a new approach towards the design of paper based autonomous microfluidic devices. Autonomy in the device operation is achieved through the incorporation of mechanically actuated microfluidic switches that are versatile in their design and may be configured to be simple time triggered ON or OFF switches or more complex switches that can be timed to be in multiple states (timed ON, followed by timed OFF). These switches are self-contained and require no external power for their operation, deriving their functionality solely through stored elastic energy. This paper presents the design and fabrication of these switches as fluidic analogs of electronic transistors, and their integration into microfluidic paper based circuit demonstrating their operation as a programmable paper-based microfluidic device.

Analytical strategies to ensure the quality and safety of food products without the need for skilled personnel are highly required. The simplicity of glucose strips for diabetes monitoring should be translated to the agri-food sector, ensuring easy evaluation of certain molecules and/or the freshness of a beverage/foodstuff. In addition to the well-known advantages that are characteristic of electroanalytical methods over other methods, paper-based materials are being used to further reduce the gap between complex laboratory testing and simple point-of-need testing. This article highlights some of the most recent advances in the development of paper-based electrochemical approaches for food surveillance, specifically focusing on the use of novel paper-based materials. Two examples are discussed: the development of a miniaturized biosensor realized on copy paper for the quantification of ethanol in commercial beers, and the measurement of ascorbic acid in food supplements within printed electronics supports. Paper-based materials have the potential to lower economic costs, simplify the operative tasks, and most importantly reduce waste generation. The continued combination of manufacturing methods and functional (smart) materials will facilitate the implementation of food analysis at the point of need.

Development of wearable devices for in situ monitoring biological analytes in sweat has been fueled up in the past few years. Although microfluidic thread/paper-based analytical device (μTPAD) fulfills the requirements of wearable systems on flexibility and biocompatibility, it has not been employed as a sensing system for the in situ sweat analysis. In this work, we developed a wearable μTPAD containing a cotton thread and a functionalized filter paper for non-invasive, quantitative and in situ monitoring of human sweat glucose with the assistance of a smartphone. The oxygen plasma was applied to tailor the wicking property of the cotton thread. Amounts of enzymes and reagents on the filter papers were optimized to achieve the high-performance colorimetric sensing of glucose. The as-prepared device possesses a dynamic range of 50–250 μΜ and a detection limit of ~ 35 μΜ. Because of its great wearability and compatibility with conventional textile industry, the μTPAD was integrated with an arm guard to sensitively detect glucose in human sweat. This work may provide a low-cost, easy to use wearable device based on the cotton thread and filter paper for human sweat analysis.

Paper-based microfluidics is a rapidly developing field with applications for point-of-care disease and environmental diagnostics. In parallel, printed electronics has grown swiftly, particularly for wearable technologies. By combining these fields, fluidic sample processing and control, as well as automated sensing and readout can be integrated on a single device. Towards this goal, this work highlights the design, manufacture, and testing of paper-based electrochemical sensors, with focus on photo paper and chromatography paper substrates. These substrates are typically used for printed electronics and paper-based fluidics, respectively. The electrochemical sensors were screen printed using manual techniques. For chromatography paper sensors, wax-printed fluidic barriers were used to illustrate the potential integration of the sensors with typical paper-based microfluidic device formats. As an initial example, the detection of heavy metals (Cd(II) and Pb(II)) in buffer solution was demonstrated. Commercial DropSens sensors were used as reference with the limit of detection (LOD) of Cd(II) and Pb(II) on chromatography sensors showing comparable results to commercial DropSens sensors. It is worth noting that the chromatography paper sensors showed a higher repeatability than the commercial DropSens sensors. Tap water samples spiked with Cd(II) and Pb(II) were also tested and showed promising results. Future work will include sensor optimization and exploration of scale-up to provide low-cost solutions for effective point-of-need diagnostics—ranging from environmental monitoring to healthcare applications.

The urgent demand for portable electronics has promoted the development of high-efficiency, sustainable, and even stretchable self-charging power sources. In this work, we propose a flexible self-charging power unit based on folded carbon (FC) paper for harvesting mechanical energy from human motion and power portable electronics. The present unit mainly consists of a triboelectric nanogenerator (FC-TENG) and a supercapacitor (FC-SC), both based on folded carbon paper, as energy harvester and storage device, respectively. This favorable geometric design provides the high Young’s modulus carbon paper with excellent stretchability and enables the power unit to work even under severe deformations, such as bending, twisting, and rolling. In addition, the tensile strain can be maximized by tuning the folding angle of the triangle-folded carbon paper. Moreover, the waterproof property of the packaged device make it washable, protect it from human sweat, and enable it to work in harsh environments. Finally, the as-prepared self-charging power unit was tested by placing it on the human body to harvest mechanical energy from hand tapping, foot treading, and arm touching, successfully powering an electronic watch. This work demonstrates the impressive potential of stretchable self-charging power units, which will further promote the development of high Young’s modulus materials for wearable/portable electronics.

Conventional methods for extraction of DNA are expensive, time-consuming and tedious. To overcome these limitations, a paper-based DNA extraction device was developed that incorporates sponge-based buffer storage, a paper-based valve and channels of different length to autonomously direct the reagent and sample to the Fusion 5 disk for DNA capturing. With this device, DNA can be extracted within 2 min from only 30 μL samples of whole blood, serum, breast cancer cell, saliva, sputum and bacterial suspension. The device can also extract Hepatitis B Virus DNA from clinical blood samples and after quantification shows a detection limit as low as 104 copies⋅mL−1. This highlights its potential use in future diagnostics. The performance of the device was similar to that of the commercial QIAamp DNA micro kits and the FTA card. In our perception, this simple, inexpensive, portable and disposable device holds great promise in terms of POC testing in resource-poor settings.

Herein we report a quantitative, multiplex assay for disease markers in plasma based on an integrated setup of a portable scanner and a disposable paper-based analytical device (PAD). The quantitative analysis relies on the digital colorimetric reading of the three-layer PAD with 30 assay sites for performing respective chromogenic reactions for plasma uric acid, glucose, and triglyceride, which are considered as important risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. A portable scanner with WiFi transmission capability was used to produce high-quality color images of the PADs and wirelessly transfer them to a smartphone or other mobile devices for data processing. The concentrations of biomarkers in both standard solutions and plasma samples can be directly obtained using a custom-designed smartphone app that is also capable of constructing calibration curves. The detection limits of uric acid, glucose, and triglyceride were determined to be 0.50 mg/dL, 0.84 mmol/L, and 14 mg/dL, respectively, which are below the normal limits and adequate for clinical validation. Owing to the distinct advantages—simple, portable, and cost-effective—this mobile assay protocol can be used for point-of-care (POC) settings or resource-limited situations, and potentially for the diagnosis and prevention of infectious diseases.

Paper is a widely used support for use in devices for point-of-care testing (POCT) in clinical diagnosis, food safety monitoring and environmental pollution. Paper is inexpensive, biocompatible, biodegradable and allows a sample fluid to flow by capillary force. Numerous method have been developed recently for chemical modification of papers in order to introduce different functionalities. This review (with 148 refs.) summarizes the recent progress in paper-based POCT devices. The introduction summarizes the state of the art of paper-based POCT devices and the physicochemical properties of existing unmodified materials (including cellulose, cellulose-based composites, cotton fibers, glass fibers, nitrocellulose, thread). Methods for paper modification for sample pretreatment are summarized next, with subsections on sample storage and collection, sample separation, nucleic acid extraction and sample preconcentration. Another main section covers approaches for paper modification for improving POCTs, with subsections on assays for proteins, nucleic acids, drugs, ion and organic molecules. The advantages and disadvantages of these approaches are compared. Several tables are presented that summarize the various modification techniques. A concluding section summarizes the current status, addresses challenges and gives an outlook on future perspectives of POCTs. A hot topic in paper-based microfluidics is the achievement of capillary-driven flows much faster than the ones theoretically allowed by the hydrodynamic permeability of common filter papers. Recent works have experimentally shown that the flow rates can be substantially improved by using multilayer paper systems instead of single-layer papers. The present work discusses a theoretical assessment of fluid transport in multilayer paper-based microfluidic devices. The proposed model effectively predicts a series of experimental observations, namely: the occurrence of fluid velocities 2 orders of magnitudelarger than those measured in single-layer paper; the variation of fluid velocity as a function of the gap thickness, whichpresents a particular maximum; the effects of gravity on the filling dynamics, which is unexpected for single-layer paper; and the effect of the sample volume size, which leads to non-trivial filling dynamics. It is worth mentioning that these effects cannot be described by Lucas?Washburn model for single layers, because they arise from the interplay among the coupled flow domains in the multilayer system, together with the action of the gravitational force. The proposed model provides clues to understand the fundamentals behind the capillary-driven flow in multilayer systems, and hence to better design paper-based microfluidics devices for specified flow rates and time-stepped functions. This paper presents an innovative method devised to study some of the harmful effects of moisture on power transformers, considering the possible formation of bubbles and free water. Its novelty stems from the fact that it comprises: (a) a rating system from “A” to “E” and their respective recommended actions and (b) an analysis that involves varying the different levels of electrical loads applied to the equipment. The importance of this work is confirmed when power transformers are exposed to unfavorable conditions that can critically affect their insulation. To this end, a tool to study moisture was developed, which uses the finite difference method, based not only on the experience of experts/analysts but also on existing studies in the area and on the analysis of a database of actual field tests. The contribution of this work is an efficient method, implemented via a computational algorithm, which provides a technique for the real-time or offline rating of power transformers, helping maintenance teams to diagnose problems and decide whether or not to repair the equipment. The tool provided the satisfactory results, which are presented in a case study of a real transformer operating at the local electric utility company. These results were obtained by applying different levels of electrical loads, for which thermal simulations were performed.

Application of optically superior, tunable fluorescent nanotechnologies have long been demonstrated throughout many chemical and biological sensing applications. Combined with microfluidics technologies, i.e. on lab-on-a-chip platforms, such fluorescent nanotechnologies have often enabled extreme sensitivity, sometimes down to single molecule level. Within recent years there has been a peak interest in translating fluorescent nanotechnology onto paper-based platforms for chemical and biological sensing, as a simple, low-cost, disposable alternative to conventional silicone-based microfluidic substrates. On the other hand, smartphone integration as an optical detection system as well as user interface and data processing component has been widely attempted, serving as a gateway to on-board quantitative processing, enhanced mobility, and interconnectivity with informational networks. Smartphone sensing can be integrated to these paper-based fluorogenic assays towards demonstrating extreme sensitivity as well as ease-of-use and low-cost. However, with these emerging technologies there are always technical limitations that must be addressed; for example, paper’s autofluorescence that perturbs fluorogenic sensing; smartphone flash’s limitations in fluorescent excitation; smartphone camera’s limitations in detecting narrow-band fluorescent emission, etc. In this review, physical optical setups, digital enhancement algorithms, and various fluorescent measurement techniques are discussed and pinpointed as areas of opportunities to further improve paper-based fluorogenic optical sensing with smartphones.

Rewritable paper has recently become prevalent in both academic research and marketplace due to the potential environmental advantages, including forest conservation, pollution reduction, energy saving and resource sustainability. However, its real-life applications are limited by a lack of effective strategy to realize multicolour and water-jet printing on rewritable paper with long legible image-lasting times. Herein, we report an effective strategy to construct rewritable paper based on colour or luminescence switching induced by dynamic metal–ligand coordination. This type of rewritable paper can be conveniently utilized for multicolour water-jet printing by using aqueous solutions containing different metal salts as ink. In addition, the printed images on the water-jet rewritable paper can be retained for a long time (> 6 months), which shows great progress compared to previous work. We believe that this type of rewritable paper could be considered as a prototype for multicolour water-jet printing to meet the practical needs., Rewritable paper is environmentally favourable, but its practical realization is stifled by limited ink colour versatility and poor image retention times. Here, the authors exploit the relatively stable but reversible nature of metal–organic coordination bonds to produce long-lasting and multicoloured inks for rewritable paper.

In automata networks, it is well known that the way entities update their states over time has a major impact on their dynamics. In particular, depending on the chosen update schedule, the underlying dynamical systems may exhibit more or less asymptotic dynamical behaviours such as fixed points or limit cycles. Since such mathematical models have been used in the framework of biological networks modelling, the question of choosing appropriate update schedules has arised soon. In this note, focusing on Boolean networks, our aim is to emphasise that the adequate way of thinking regulations and genetic expression over time is certainly not to consider a wall segregating synchronicity from asynchronicity because they actually complement rather well. In particular, we highlight that specific update schedules, namely block-parallel update schedules, whose intrinsic features are still not known from a theoretical point of view, admit realistic and pertinent properties in the context of biological modelling and deserve certainly more attention from the community.

Lateral flow assays (LFAs) have been extensively used as point-of-care testing platforms because they are inexpensive, portable, simple, and rapid, which particularly improve their availability in resource-poor settings. However, the poor sensitivity of LFAs restricts their further applications. Herein, we proposed a novel and simple method to enhance the detection sensitivity of LFAs by embedding cotton thread-based barriers into paper and further integrating them into strips to decrease the flow rate of sample and extend the reaction time. The number and hydrophilicity of the embedded cotton threads were sequentially optimized. The flow rate of liquid in cotton thread-embedded LFAs was mathematically simulated using a circuit-like model and the simulation results are consistent with the experimental results. With using human immunodeficiency virus nucleic acid as a model target, the cotton thread-embedded LFAs presented a fourfold enhancement in detection sensitivity compared to that of the unmodified LFAs. The strategy of embedding cotton threads into paper possesses great potential for fabricating other paper-based microfluidic devices in the future.

An automated, portable, and integrated paper-based microfluidic system has been developed for influenza A detection with smartphone at point-of-care (POC) settings. The low-cost paper-based microfluidic chip consists of a reagent storage and reaction modules. The storage module, which consists of a couple of reagent chambers with dispensation channels, is responsible for reagent storage and release. The reaction module consists of an absorbent pad and a nitrocellulose (NC) membrane which is functionalized with specific monoclonal antibodies on a test and control spots for immunoassay detection. Microfluidic Dot-ELISA is performed when the dispensed reagent flows through the NC membrane at a controllable speed and reaches the absorbent pad because of the gravity and capillary force without active pumping. A smartphone is used to capture image from the NC membrane with its own camera and process the image with an intelligent algorithm of custom application software which is developed with Java. With a smartphone, the detection result can be displayed and transmitted to other medical agencies if necessary. Experimental results show that, compared with the traditional methods, more convenient and efficient influenza A detection can be achieved with the developed paper-based POC microfluidic chip with the assistance of smartphone.

The uncontrolled volume of sample has a significant influence on the outcome of the colorimetric detection method performed on paper-based microfluidic devices. In a reliable colorimetric assay, the results should be completely dependent on the concentration of analyte in the sample rather than its volume. However, this effect is usually overlooked in the development of paper-based microfluidic devices as a simple, inexpensive, portable and user-friendly medical diagnostic system. In this work, a volume-independent micro paper-based analytical device has been introduced in which the need for precise controlling of sample volume is eliminated. We have shown that the proposed device is only sensitive to the concentration of analyte (glucose) in the sample instead of its volume. We have also demonstrated that the proposed device addresses the reported problem of colour heterogeneity and is relatively insusceptible to the variation of reagents volume. An inexpensive smart phone camera is used for capturing the images and a portable 3D printed tool is designed to eliminate the environmental illuminations. To simulate the real condition, human plasma samples are used throughout the experiments.

Paper-based generators are essential elements for building all paper-based systems. To obtain robust paper-based generators with outstanding high power outputs, this paper introduced a new type of double-folding paper-based generator by folding two paper components together. The output performance levels of the double-folding generator were twice higher than that of the single-folding and parallel-plate generators. A peak power of ~3.24 mW was achieved under a stimulating frequency of 3 Hz. Furthermore, 47 light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were lit directly by a double-folding paper-based generator assembled to the crack of a door that opens and closes. This finding indicated the potential applications of the double-folding generator in the production of door ornaments or for security in places where doors frequently open and close.

In this paper, a new programmable structure of paper-based analytical devices and its programming method are represented to be used for the purpose of rapid prototyping without involving the fabrication process. The proposed ready-to-program structure is prefabricated by the screen-printing method before rendering it to the end user. The users can prototype the device rapidly for their specific applications simply by programming the prefabricated device. The proposed programmable device is composed of three different layers patterned on the filter paper substrate including a hydrophobic barrier layer, a path-blocking layer and a heater network layer. The device programming procedure is totally electrical and it is implemented by applying proper DC voltages to several predetermined heater lines. This procedure is applicable manually or automatically using a programmer setup connected to a personal computer (PC). Therefore, the user can configure the device by selecting appropriate heater lines in a simple firmware through the PC. The proposed programmable structure is implemented in four different µPAD patterns for different applications. Biochemical assays of glucose, total protein and albumin are performed on the programmable devices to verify their applicability for bioassays.

Paper-like materials have found widespread applications in various fields, especially recently emerging applications in biomedicine as paper-based devices, where liquid wicking behavior plays a significant role. Although tremendous experimental evidence has indicated that fluid control is a key technology to improve the performance of these paper-based devices, the underlying mechanisms of liquid wicking behavior in paper-like materials remain unclear. Numerical and mathematical techniques provide effective strategy and great potential in understanding the liquid flowing process in the complex fibrous structure of paper-like materials. In this review, we first present the basic physical process and key factors of liquid wicking behavior in paper-like materials. Furthermore, we review various macroscopic and mesoscopic mathematical models on fluid flow in porous materials, focusing on each model’s advantages and challenges, and summarize their related biomedical applications. The aims are to better understand the underlying mechanisms of liquid wicking behavior in paper-like materials through mathematical models and to provide guidance in the design and optimization of paper-based biomedical devices.

Background: Infrared reflectography (IRR) remains an important method to visualize underdrawing and compositional changes in paintings. Older IRR camera systems are being replaced with near-infrared cameras consisting of room temperature infrared detector arrays made out of indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) that operate over the spectral range of similar to 900 to 1700 nm. Two camera types are becoming prevalent. The first is staring array infrared cameras having 0.25-1 Megapixels where the camera or painting is moved to acquire tens of individual images that are later mosaicked together to create the infrared reflectogram. The second camera type is scanning back cameras in which a small InGaAs array (linear or area array) is mechanically scanned over a large image formed by the camera lens to create the reflectogram, typically 16 Megapixels. Both systems have advantages and disadvantages. The staring IR array cameras offer more flexible collection formats, provide live images, and allow for the use of spectral bandpass filters that can provide reflectograms with better contrast in some cases. They do require a mechanical system for moving the camera or the artwork and post-capture image mosaicking. Scanning back cameras eliminate or reduce the amount of mosaicking and movement of the camera, however the need to minimize light exposure to the artwork requires short integration times, and thus limits the use of spectral bandpass filters. In general, InGaAs cameras are not sensitive in the 1700 to similar to 2300 nm spectral region, which has been identified in prior studies as useful for examining paintings with copper green pigments or thick lead white paints. Prior studies using cameras with sensitivity from 1000 to 2500 nm have found in general the performance at wavelengths longer than 1700 nm degraded relative to the performance at shorter wavelengths. Thus, there is interest in a camera system having improved performance out to 2500 nm that can utilize spectral bandpass filters. Methods: Design requirements for such an improved IRR camera system were determined by first re-examining the optimal spectral window for detecting underdrawing. Thus the wavelength dependence of the clarity of carbon black underdrawings on a chalk ground covered by various paint swatches was measured from 750 to 2500 nm. Second, analysis of the loss of light transmission (1000-2500 nm) and the impact of thermal radiation (3000-5000 nm) on the performance of IR arrays sensitive to the 1000-5000 nm region was analyzed. From the results of these studies, a high sensitivity, near-infrared (1000-2450 nm) indium antimonide (InSb) staring array camera with a cold filter that blocked light >2450 nm was constructed with a color-corrected macro lens capable of holding interference filters. The camera system was characterized in three spectral bands (1100-1400, 1500-1800, and 2100-2400 nm) using test targets and art objects. Results: The experimental results of the contrast difference between the model underdrawing on the chalk ground showed the optimal spectral window for a given pigment varied over the range from 700 to 2300 nm. The contrast in all cases was found to be low from 2300 to 2600 nm and even lower from 2600 to 5000 nm. This is attributable in part to broad absorption by the drying oil paint binder. Performance testing of the IRR camera found high signal-to-noise was observed in all three spectral bands due to the optimized macro lens having high transmission from 1000 to 2600 nm, a 100% efficiency cold stop, and a cold filter that blocks light >2450 nm. The camera was found to have high light sensitivity, requiring only similar to 30 to 50 lx from incandescent lamps having a color temperature of similar to 2060 K. The images produced in each spectral band were sharp, and the modulation at Nyquist (1/2 the sampling frequency) was 20%. IRR images of Old Master paintings, works on paper, and a warped panel painting were collected to test the practical utility of the camera system. Conclusions: The IR camera system presented here was found to produce a variety of high-resolution image products. The ability to extend image collection over the 1700-2450 nm spectral range was found in some examples to provide improved visibility of underdrawing. The ability to register the resulting multi-band IRR images with the color image offers opportunities to produce new image products such as false-color images and principal component images. These image products were found to give new insights into the construction of works of art. A collection scheme based on a 'Z-stack' method was found to solve the problem of producing high-resolution IRR images of highly warped panel paintings.

In the paper we present an approach to the automatic detection and identification of important elements in paper documents. This includes stamps, logos, printed text blocks, signatures and tables. Presented approach consists of two stages. The first one includes object detection by means of AdaBoost cascade of weak classifiers and Haar-like features. Resulting image blocks are, at the second stage, subjected to verification based on selected features calculated from recently proposed low-level descriptors combined with certain classifiers representing current machine-learning approaches. The training phase, for both stages, uses bootstrapping, i.e., integrative process, aiming at increasing the accuracy. Experiments performed on large set of digitized paper documents showed that adopted strategy is useful and efficient.

Paper-based chips (PB-chips; also referred to as lab-on-paper chips) are using patterned paper as a substrate in a lab-on-a-chip platform. They represent an outstanding technique for fabrication of analytical devices for multiplex analyte assays. Typical features include low-cost, portability, disposability and small sample consumption. This review (with 211 refs.) gives a comprehensive and critical insight into current trends in terms of materials and techniques for use in fabrication, modification and detection. Following an introduction into the principles of PB-chips, we discuss features of using paper in lab-on-a-chip devices and the proper choice of paper. We then discuss the versatile methods known for fabrication of PB-chips (ranging from photolithography, plasma treatment, inkjet etching, plotting, to printing including flexographic printing). The modification of PB-chips with micro- and nano-materials possessing superior optical or electronic properties is then reviewed, and the final section covers detection techniques (such as colorimetry, electrochemistry, electrochemiluminescence and chemiluminescence) along with specific (bio)analytical examples. A conclusion and outlook section discusses the challenges and future prospectives in this field.

In this attractive paper (Battiato et al. in Transp Porous Media, 2019), the authors review different methods of upscaling heterogeneous media descriptions to continuous macroscopic equivalent descriptions. I would like to introduce some comments to complete the presentation of the homogenisation theory in Section 7.

The prediction of the imbibition into two-dimensional geometries is extremely important to develop new paper-based microfluidics design principles. In this regard, a two-dimensional model using Richard’s equation, which has been extensively applied in soil mechanics, is applied in this work to model the imbibition into paper-based networks. Compared to capillary-based models, the developed model is capable of predicting the imbibition into two-dimensional domains. The numerical solution of the proposed model shows a good agreement with the experimental measurements of water imbibition into different chromatography paper-based designs. It is expected that this framework can be applied to develop new design rules for controlling the flow in paper-based microfluidics devices.

Significant progress has been achieved using paper-based microfluidics to provide low-cost analytical tools for point-of-care testing. To satisfy minimized liquid handling and biohazard contamination risks, we have innovatively integrated microfluidic paper-based analytical devices with a standard micropipette tip to build an economical “sample-in, answer-out” device, namely “strips-in-tip.” The device was assembled by loading multiple chromatography filter paper strips into a micropipette tip. One aspiration action of the pipette can accurately transfer solution samples into the paper strip, and the visual colorimetric results can be read by the naked eye. The multiplexing capability of the strips-in-tip device was demonstrated by assaying glucose, protein, and pH in a urine sample by one aspiration action. Owing to the simplicity of its fabrication and usage, it is anticipated that the strips-in-tip device can be used for biological and chemical assays to avoid contamination and infection.

We report the transient memory device by means of a water soluble SSG (solid sodium with glycerine) paper. This material has a hydroscopic property hence it can be soluble in water. In terms of physical security of memory devices, prompt abrogation of a memory device which stored a large number of data is crucial when it is stolen because all of things have identified information in the memory device. By utilizing the SSG paper as a substrate, we fabricated a disposable resistive random access memory (RRAM) which has good data retention of longer than 106 seconds and cycling endurance of 300 cycles. This memory device is dissolved within 10 seconds thus it can never be recovered or replicated. By employing direct printing but not lithography technology to aim low cost and disposable applications, the memory capacity tends to be limited less than kilo-bits. However, unlike high memory capacity demand for consumer electronics, the proposed device is targeting for security applications. With this regards, the sub-kilobit memory capacity should find the applications such as one-time usable personal identification, authentication code storage, cryptography key, and smart delivery tag. This aspect is attractive for security and protection system against unauthorized accessibility.

The paper “State-of-the-art of research on seismic pounding between buildings with aligned slabs” (by Kharazian and Lopez-Almansa) has recently been published in the journal of Archives of Computational Methods in Engineering. It can be considered as a kind of continuation of previous ‘state-of-the-art’ publications, including two papers and a book. Unfortunately, the paper contains a number of misleading or wrong statements as well as mistakes. The aim of the present paper is to discuss the controversial statements and to correct the mistakes.

In February 2014, we had the honor of organizing the eighth installment of the conference series “Learning and Intelligent Optimization” (LION) in Gainesville, Florida, USA. As always, the work presented was at the forefront of research performed between the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Mathematical Programing and Optimization, and Algorithmic Design. The conference was very successful in attracting researchers from around the world who have been pushing the boundaries in the intersection of the above fields, among others. As has become tradition from the earlier, very successful LION conferences, we are happy to dedicate this special issue to extended versions of a selected sample of the work presented in LION 8 in February 2014. For the remainder of the contributions submitted and presented during LION 8, we refer the interested reader to [1]. The spectrum of the topics covered in this special issue ranges from facility location and routing, to job scheduling and robotics, while the techniques and approaches come from fields as diverse as algorithm portfolio techniques, evolutionary algorithms, and hybrid metaheuristics. More specifically this special issue contains the following contributions. Thermo-mechanical finite element (FE) models predict the thermal behavior of machine tools and the associated mechanical deviations. However, one disadvantage is their high computational expense, linked to the evaluation of the large systems of differential equations. Therefore, projection-based model order reduction (MOR) methods are required in order to create efficient surrogate models. This paper presents a parametric MOR method for weakly coupled thermo-mechanical FE models of machine tools and other similar mechatronic systems. This work proposes a reduction method, Krylov Modal Subspace (KMS), and a theoretical bound of the reduction error. The developed method addresses the parametric dependency of the convective boundary conditions using the concept of system bilinearization. The reduced-order model reproduces the thermal response of the original FE model in the frequency range of interest for any value of the parameters describing the convective boundary conditions. Additionally, this paper investigates the coupling between the reduced-order thermal system and the mechanical response. The necessity of image fusion is growing in recently in image processing applications due to the tremendous amount of acquisition systems. Fusion of images is defined as an alignment of noteworthy Information from diverse sensors using various mathematical models to generate a single compound image. The fusion of images is used for integrating the complementary multi-temporal, multi-view and multi-sensor Information into a single image with improved image quality and by keeping the integrity of important features. It is considered as a vital pre-processing phase for several applications such as robot vision, aerial, satellite imaging, medical imaging, and a robot or vehicle guidance. In this paper, various state-of-art image fusion methods of diverse levels with their pros and cons, various spatial and transform based method with quality metrics and their applications in different domains have been discussed. Finally, this review has concluded various future directions for different applications of image fusion.

This paper addresses a real-life personnel scheduling problem in the context of Covid-19 pandemic, arising in a large Italian pharmaceutical distribution warehouse. In this case study, the challenge is to determine a schedule that attempts to meet the contractual working time of the employees, considering the fact that they must be divided into mutually exclusive groups to reduce the risk of contagion. To solve the problem, we propose a mixed integer linear programming formulation (MILP). The solution obtained indicates that optimal schedule attained by our model is better than the one generated by the company. In addition, we performed tests on random instances of larger size to evaluate the scalability of the formulation. In most cases, the results found using an open-source MILP solver suggest that high quality solutions can be achieved within an acceptable CPU time. We also project that our findings can be of general interest for other personnel scheduling problems, especially during emergency scenarios such as those related to Covid-19 pandemic.

This paper presents a foresight perspective of nanotechnology in South Africa based on a 20-year period scientometric analysis of the country's nanotechnology publications on the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection. Firstly, publication trends are reported; then, possible socio-economic relevant sectors arising from this information are determined. Lastly, indicators that can be used in foresight exercises to evaluate the potential nanotechnology research areas in South Africa are examined. The 20-year review is also compared with the recent past year, 2019, to identify any changing trends. South Africa's nanotechnology publications per year grew exponentially from 68 papers in 2000 to 1672 in 2019, an increase of 2459%. The total share of nanotech publications increased from 1.4% in 2000 to 6.6% in 2019, thus a 0.52% increase per year. Compared with Brazil, Russia, India and China, the BRICS countries, South Africa has the lowest nanotechnology productivity with an activity index of 0.68. Over the last 5 years, South Africa nanotech publications had a Hirsch-index of 94 and an average citations rate of 12.76 per paper. Universities are the most prominent publishers, and there are very few publications from the private sector, which can negatively impact the commercialisation of nanotechnology research. The top 10 most prolific researchers, author or co-author over 20% of the nanotechnology papers are reported. A mixture of old and new top researchers' names suggests succession planning in the system as the years progress. The emergence of computer science as one of the top 20 subjects publishing in nanotech in 2019 and a high level of researcher collaboration suggests possible convergence of nanotech, information technology and artificial intelligence in South Africa. The strategic socio-economic-focused nanotechnology research areas identified for South Africa include material science, photoluminance and optics, medicine, catalysis, electronics, energy, biotech, magnetism, sensors, water and communicable diseases. The top collaborating countries, top researchers, top institutions and nanotechnology economic hubs are reported for each strategic research area. The level of innovation was evaluated using the nanotechnology value chain, and there is a meagre 3.5% of papers reporting on nano-enabled products.

Many visual analytics have been developed for examining scientific publications comprising wealthy data such as authors and citations. The studies provide unprecedented insights on a variety of applications, e.g., literature review and collaboration analysis. However, visual information (e.g., figures) that is widely employed for storytelling and methods description are often neglected. We present VIStory, an interactive storyboard for exploring visual information in scientific publications. We harvest a new dataset of a large corpora of figures, using an automatic figure extraction method. Each figure contains various attributes such as dominant color and width/height ratio, together with faceted metadata of the publication including venues, authors, and keywords. To depict these information, we develop an intuitive interface consisting of three components: (1) Faceted View enables efficient query by publication metadata, benefiting from a nested table structure, (2) Storyboard View arranges paper rings—a well-designed glyph for depicting figure attributes, in a themeriver layout to reveal temporal trends, and (3) Endgame View presents a highlighted figure together with the publication metadata. We illustrate the applicability of VIStory with case studies on two datasets, i.e., 10-year IEEE VIS publications, and publications by a research team at CVPR, ICCV, and ECCV conferences. Quantitative and qualitative results from a formal user study demonstrate the efficiency of VIStory in exploring visual information in scientific publications. Stretchable electronics is a new innovation and becoming popular in various fields, especially in the healthcare sector. Since stretchable electronics use less printed circuit boards (PCBs), it is expected that the environmental performance of a stretchable electronics-based device is better than a rigid electronics-based device that provides the same functionalities. Yet, such a study is rarely available. Thus, the main purpose of this research is to perform a comparative life cycle analysis of stretchable and rigid electronics-based devices. This research combines both the case study approach and the research review approach. For the case study, a cardiac monitoring device with both stretchable and rigid electronics is used. The ISO 14044:2006 standard's prescribed LCA approach and ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (Hierarchist) are followed for the impact assessment using the SimaPro 9.1 software. The LCA results show that the stretchable cardiac monitoring device has better environmental performance in all eighteen impact categories. This research also shows that the manufacturing process of stretchable electronics has lower environmental impacts than those for rigid electronics. The main reasons for the improved environmental performance of stretchable electronics are lower consumption of raw material as well as decreased energy consumption during manufacturing. Based on the LCA results of a cardiac monitoring device, the study concludes that stretchable electronics and their manufacturing process have better environmental performance in comparison with the rigid electronics and their manufacturing process.

Graphical abstract P-graph causality maps were recently proposed as a methodology for systematic analysis of intertwined causal chains forming network-like structures. This approach uses the bipartite representation of P-graph to distinguish system components (“objects” represented by O-type nodes) from the functions they perform (“mechanisms” represented by M-type nodes). The P-graph causality map methodology was originally applied for determining structurally feasible causal networks to enable a desirable outcome to be achieved. In this work, the P-graph causality map methodology is extended to the analysis of vicious networks (i.e., causal networks with adverse outcomes). The maximal structure generation algorithm is first used to assemble the problem elements into a complete causal network; the solution structure generation algorithm is then used to enumerate all structurally feasible causal networks. Such comprehensive analysis gives insights on how to deactivate vicious networks through the removal of keystone objects and mechanisms. The extended methodology is illustrated with an ex post analysis of the 1984 Bhopal industrial disaster. Prospects for other applications to sustainability issues are also discussed.

Graphical abstract The effective application of the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/Cas9 system in biology, medicine and other fields is hindered by the off-target effects and loci-affinity of Cas9-sgRNA, especially at a genome-wide scale. In order to eliminate the occurrence of off-target effects and evaluate loci-affinity by CRISPR/Cas9 site-specific detection and screening of high-affinity sgRNA sequences, respectively, we develop a CRISPR/Cas9-assisted reverse PCR method for site-specific detection and sgRNA sequence validation. The detection method based on PCR can be used directly in the laboratory with PCR reaction conditions, without the need for an additional detection system, and the whole process of detection can be completed within 2 h. Therefore, it can be easily popularized with a PCR instrument. Finally, this method is fully verified by detecting multiple forms of site mutations and evaluating the affinity of a variety of sgRNA sequences for the CRISPR/Cas9 system. In sum, it provides an effective new analysis tool for CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing-related research. A CRISPR/Cas9-assisted reverse PCR method was developed for Cas9/sgRNA site-specific detection and sgRNA sequence validation. The technique detects target DNA in three steps: (1) target DNA is specifically cut by a pair of Cas9/sgRNA complexes; (2) the cleaved DNA is rapidly linked by T4 DNA ligase; (3) the ligated DNA is efficiently amplified by PCR (PCR or qPCR). Engineering cyber-physical systems inhabiting contemporary urban spatial environments demands software engineering facilities to support design and operation. Tools and approaches in civil engineering and architectural informatics produce artifacts that are geometrical or geographical representations describing physical spaces. The models we consider conform to the CityGML standard; although relying on international standards and accessible in machine-readable formats, such physical space descriptions often lack semantic information that can be used to support analyses. In our context, analysis as commonly understood in software engineering refers to reasoning on properties of an abstracted model—in this case a city design. We support model-based development, firstly by providing a way to derive analyzable models from CityGML descriptions, and secondly, we ensure that changes performed are propagated correctly. Essentially, a digital twin of a city is kept synchronized, in both directions, with the information from the actual city. Specifically, our formal programming technique and accompanying technical framework assure that relevant information added, or changes applied to the domain (resp. analyzable) model are reflected back in the analyzable (resp. domain) model automatically and coherently. The technique developed is rooted in the theory of bidirectional transformations, which guarantees that synchronization between models is consistent and well behaved. Produced models can bootstrap graph-theoretic, spatial or dynamic analyses. We demonstrate that bidirectional transformations can be achieved in practice on real city models.

During major infectious disease outbreak, such as COVID-19, the goods and parcels supply and distribution for the isolated personnel has become a key issue worthy of attention. In this study, we propose a delivery problem that arises in the last-mile delivery during major infectious disease outbreak. The problem is to construct a Hamiltonian tour over a subset of candidate parking nodes, and each customer is assigned to the nearest parking node on the tour to pick up goods or parcels. The aim is to minimize the total cost, including the routing, allocation, and parking costs. We propose three models to formulate the problem, which are node-based, flow-based and bilevel programing formulations. Moreover, we develop a variable neighborhood search algorithm based on the ideas from the bilevel programing formulations to solve the problem. Finally, the proposed algorithm is tested on a set of randomly generated instances, and the results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Approximate analytical methods, such as the multiple scales (MS) and direct normal form (DNF) techniques, have been used extensively for investigating nonlinear mechanical structures, due to their ability to offer insight into the system dynamics. A comparison of their accuracy has not previously been undertaken, so is addressed in this paper. This is achieved by computing the backbone curves of two systems: the single-degree-of-freedom Duffing oscillator and a non-symmetric, two-degree-of-freedom oscillator. The DNF method includes an inherent detuning, which can be physically interpreted as a series expansion about the natural frequencies of the underlying linear system and has previously been shown to increase its accuracy. In contrast, there is no such inbuilt detuning for MS, although one may be, and usually is, included. This paper investigates the use of the DNF detuning as the chosen detuning in the MS method as a way of equating the two techniques, demonstrating that the two can be made to give identical results up to \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\varepsilon ^2$$\end{document}ε2 order. For the examples considered here, the resulting predictions are more accurate than those provided by the standard MS technique. Wolfram Mathematica scripts implementing these methods have been provided to be used in conjunction with this paper to illustrate their practicality. The NISTmAb is a monoclonal antibody Reference Material from the National Institute of Standards and Technology; it is a class-representative IgG1κ intended serve as a pre-competitive platform for harmonization and technology development in the biopharmaceutical industry. The publication series of which this paper is a part describes NIST’s overall control strategy to ensure NISTmAb quality and availability over its lifecycle. In this paper, the development and qualification of methods for monitoring NISTmAb charge heterogeneity are described. Capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and capillary isoelectric focusing (CIEF) assays were optimized and evaluated as candidate assays for NISTmAb quality control. CIEF was found to be suitable as a structural characterization assay yielding information on the apparent pI of the NISTmAb. CZE was found to be better suited for routine monitoring of NISTmAb charge heterogeneity and was qualified for this purpose. This paper is intended to provide relevant details of NIST’s charge heterogeneity control strategy to facilitate implementation of the NISTmAb as a test molecule in the end user’s laboratory. Hashtag data are common and easy to acquire. Thus, they are widely used in studies and visual data storytelling. For example, a recent story by China Central Television Europe (CCTV Europe) depicts Brexit as a hashtag movement displayed on an animated bubble chart. However, creating such a story is usually laborious and tedious, because narrators have to switch between different tools and discuss with different collaborators. To reduce the burden, we develop a prototype system to help explore the bubbles' movement by automatically inserting animations connected to the storytelling of the video creators and the interaction of viewers to those videos. In this work, we propose a parameter estimation framework for fracture propagation problems. The fracture problem is described by a phase-field method. Parameter estimation is realized with a Bayesian approach. Here, the focus is on uncertainties arising in the solid material parameters and the critical energy release rate. A reference value (obtained on a sufficiently refined mesh) as the replacement of measurement data will be chosen, and their posterior distribution is obtained. Due to time- and mesh dependencies of the problem, the computational costs can be high. Using Bayesian inversion, we solve the problem on a relatively coarse mesh and fit the parameters. In several numerical examples our proposed framework is substantiated and the obtained load-displacement curves, that are usually the target functions, are matched with the reference values.

Cities are important barriers to protect people's lives and property in the face of natural disasters, economic fluctuations and epidemic diseases. The evaluation of urban resilience is a hybrid multiple attribute group decision-making problem involving both crisp and fuzzy indicators. In order to evaluate the urban resilience reasonably and quantitatively, an urban resilience evaluation index system is established, including four primary indicators of ecological environment, municipal facilities, economic development and social development, and 28 secondary indicators. An evaluation model based on the theory of intuitionistic fuzzy set and TOPSIS method is proposed. The intuitionistic trapezoidal fuzzy number is used to quantify the fuzzy index and determine the weights of experts. The weight of each index is determined based on the maximizing deviation method. The relevant data of Dalian City from 2013 to 2017 are collected to evaluate the city resilience, and a sensitivity analysis is carried out based on the proposed model. The results may provide insights for the further urban resilience promotion.
