By interpreting the 2D/3D seismic survey data acquired in the surrounding ocean areas of the Northeast (NE) Japan Arc, we clarified the detailed geological structure and demonstrated that the basic structure in the hanging-wall plate of the subduction system consists of many structural blocks (segments) separated by NW–SE trending large transcurrent faults (strike-slip faults). This structural configuration showed a close relationship with the distribution of foreshocks, mainshock, and aftershocks, coseismic slip models of the 2011 M9.0 Tohoku-Oki megathrust earthquake, coseismic slip area of M-7 class earthquakes, quasi-static slip rates, back slip rate, and seismic tomography images. In addition, the coseismic slip models revealed that the trenchward forearc of the structural blocks between the Offshore Hidaka tectonic line and the Honjo-Sendai tectonic line fitted well with the coseismic slip area of the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. These findings suggest that the structural blocks bounded by these two tectonic lines slipped rapidly trenchward when the mainshock occurred. The M7 earthquakes were also concentrated along these two tectonic lines, thereby suggesting a close relationship between seismic activity and the inherited geological structure of the overriding plate in the NE Japan forearc. The M 7.3 Kumamoto earthquake that occurred at 1:25 JST on April 16, 2016, not only triggered aftershocks in the vicinity of the epicenter, but also triggered earthquakes that were 50-100 km away from the epicenter of the main shock. The active seismicity can be divided into three regions: (1) the vicinity of the main faults, (2) the northern region of Aso volcano (50 km northeast of the mainshock epicenter), and (3) the regions around three volcanoes, Yufu, Tsurumi, and Garan (100 km northeast of the mainshock epicenter). Notably, the zones between these regions are distinctively seismically inactive. The electric resistivity structure estimated from one-dimensional analysis of the 247 broadband (0.005-3000 s) magnetotelluric and telluric observation sites clearly shows that the earthquakes occurred in resistive regions adjacent to conductive zones or resistive-conductive transition zones. In contrast, seismicity is quite low in electrically conductive zones, which are interpreted as regions of connected fluids. We suggest that the series of the earthquakes was induced by a local accumulated stress and/or fluid supply from conductive zones. Because the relationship between the earthquakes and the resistivity structure is consistent with previous studies, seismic hazard assessment generally can be improved by taking into account the resistivity structure. Following on from the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake series, we suggest that there are two zones that have a relatively high potential of earthquake generation along the western extension of the MTL. The Pacific plate converges with northeastern Eurasia at a rate of 8-9 m per century along the Kamchatka, Kuril and Japan trenches[SUP1]. Along the southern Kuril trench, which faces the Japanese island of Hokkaido, this fast subduction has recurrently generated earthquakes with magnitudes of up to ∼8 over the past two centuries[SUP2-6]. These historical events, on rupture segments 100-200 km long, have been considered characteristic of Hokkai-do's plate-boundary earthquakes[SUP7,8]. But here we use deposits of prehistoric tsunamis to infer the infrequent occurrence of larger earthquakes generated from longer ruptures. Many of these tsunami deposits form sheets of sand that extend kilometres inland from the deposits of historical tsunamis. Stratigraphic series of extensive sand sheets, intercalated with dated volcanic-ash layers, show that such unusually large tsunamis occurred about every 500 years on average over the past 2,000-7,000 years, most recently ∼350 years ago. Numerical simulations of these tsunamis are best explained by earthquakes that individually rupture multiple segments along the southern Kuril trench. Non-volcanic tremor is a weak, extended duration seismic signal observed episodically on some major faults, often in conjunction with slow slip events. Such tremor may hold the key to understanding fundamental processes at the deep roots of faults, and could signal times of accelerated slip and hence increased seismic hazard. The mechanism underlying the generation of tremor and its relationship to aseismic slip are, however, as yet unresolved. Here we demonstrate that tremor beneath Shikoku, Japan, can be explained as a swarm of small, low-frequency earthquakes, each of which occurs as shear faulting on the subduction-zone plate interface.
