Background: Paper mulberry has been regarded as a potential protein resource for relieving the forage supply crisis, and ensiling has become the most important method for preserving it. An in-depth analysis of the fermentation characteristics of paper mulberry silage could provide a theoretical basis for producing high-quality silage. In this study, we aimed to investigate the dynamic fermentation quality and bacterial community of paper mulberry silages harvested from different regions in China. Results: The results showed an increased trend in ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) concentration, despite a decrease in pH with prolonged ensiling days. Furthermore, fermentation patterns varied among paper mulberry silages from three regions. Paper mulberry from Zhuozhou, Hebei (HZ) showed the highest dry matter (DM) content and a slight decrease in pH during ensiling. While the lowest DM content was observed in Hechi, Guangxi (GH), which exhibited abnormal fermentation in the silage. In particular, silage from Lankao, Henan (HL) exhibited the best fermentation quality, with lower pH and NH3-N concentration, and higher lactic acid concentration than others (P < 0.05). The bacterial richness and evenness also declined with prolonged ensiling. Among all samples, Enterobacter was the most abundant in all silages, with a trend of increasing and then decreasing during the fermentation process. Pseudocitrobacter dominated in GH silage with abnormal fermentation. Although the bacteria community during ensiling varied widely among silages from different regions, Enterobacter cloacae and Lactobacillus plantarum were the main differential bacteria in silage quality of paper mulberry. Conclusion: Ensiling days and regions had significant effects on the fermentation patterns and bacterial community of paper mulberry silage which might be due to the differences in DM content. Notably, silage quality showed a close relationship with Enterobacter cloacae and Lactobacillus plantarum. Inhibiting the proliferation of Enterobacter and Pseudocitrobacter could be critical for improving the fermentation quality of paper mulberry silage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Continuous enhancement of sustainable development capacity is one of the goals of building a well-off society. In order to understand the development of each region, it is necessary to make a comprehensive evaluation of their sustainable development capacity. This paper presents a study of the 11 regions of Hebei Province, China. Considering the influence of time on urban development, this paper comprehensively evaluates the sustainable development ability of each region in Hebei Province from three dimensions of society, economy and environment based on panel data. The evaluation results show that Shijiazhuang has the strongest sustainable development capacity. On this basis, the promoting factors and restricting factors of sustainable development in each region are found by using grey correlation analysis method. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei integration plan rose to the status of a national-level strategy in 2014. This paper provides a deep analysis of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area's inter-city commuter big data. This research analyzed the overview of spatial structure, polycentric structure, hierarchical structure and clustering characteristics of the BTH based on network analysis methods. It reveals that the inter-city commuter network exhibits clear polycentric characteristics, with Beijing acting as the central hub. The degree of network correlation between cities in Tianjin and Hebei is notably low, indicating that the flow of people primarily revolves around Beijing, while interactions between other cities remain limited. Therefore, it is necessary to further decentralize Beijing's non-capital core functions. The level of connectedness among the areas surrounding the Bohai Rim is not very high, and it has not developed the coastal advantage. The cooperation could be strengthed among the cities within Bohai Rim. The polycentric structure has initially taken shape, but it exhibits obvious polarization characteristics. Traditional settlements are vital carriers of Chinese history and culture, reflecting the direct and original needs of generations. However, the modernization of settlements will inevitably disrupt the spontaneous growth patterns inherent in traditional settlements. The degree of disorder of the settlement is not only the embodiment of its form, but also the concrete manifestation of its construction intention. We use the degree of disorder in settlements to assess the construction intentions of the settlements, the results allow us to assess whether new planning aligns with the original construction logic, thereby assessing the extent of interference by modernization in traditional villages. This can provide guidance and assistance for settlement conservation and future planning. By using the Delaunay triangulation network, street polar histogram and direction entropy, and comprehensibility of settlements, this paper quantitatively analyzes the degree of disorder in the three levels of architecture, street and local environment of the settlement. Liangjia Village, the example in this research, is divided into three areas—two new and one old. degree of disorders in architecture, streets, and local environment are calculated and compared with the overall settlement. The study finds that the construction logic for buildings and streets remains stable throughout development. However, notable differences exist in environmental construction principles between new and old sections. The analysis suggests that traditional settlements, guided by inherent principles, maintain stability under external influences, serving as a benchmark for future planning and modernization decisions. Studying the internal relationship between urbanization process and cultivated land change can reveal the differential law of different urbanization processes and effectively protect cultivated land resources. Using the land-use change analysis method, this paper analyzed the quantity and quality change of cultivated land during the process of urbanization in the Bohai Rim region from 1990 to 2020 and explored its driving mechanism. The results show that the urbanization level in the Bohai Rim region increases by 31.06%, and 120 km2 farmland will be occupied for every 1% increase in urbanization level. The level of urbanization is higher in Beijing and Tianjin, medium in Liaoning and Shandong, and lower in Hebei. The area of cultivated land decreased year by year, and the decrease in dry land was the largest, followed by paddy land. Hebei, Shandong, and Liaoning have a high contribution rate to the reduction in cultivated land around the Bohai Sea. Population urbanization, spatial urbanization, and other factors have a significant impact on the study area, while economic urbanization and life urbanization show different laws. It is suggested that the development of urbanization can be promoted in a timely and appropriate manner, and the harmonious development of urbanization can be promoted by optimizing the layout of land use and avoiding excessive occupation of cultivated land at the expense of food security and ecological environment. Air quality index (AQI) is an essential measure of air pollution evaluation, which describes the air pollution degree and its impact on health, so the accurate prediction of AQI is significant. This paper presents an AQI prediction model based on Convolution Neural Networks (CNN) and Improved Long Short-Term Memory (ILSTM), named CNN-ILSTM. ILSTM deletes the output gate in LSTM and improves its input gate and forget gate, and introduces a Conversion Information Module (CIM) to prevent supersaturation in the learning process. ILSTM realizes efficient learning of historical data, improves prediction accuracy, and reduces the training time. CNN extracts the eigenvalues of input data effectively. This paper uses air quality data from 00:00 on January 1, 2017, to 23:00 on June 30, 2021, in Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province, China, as experimental data sets, and compares this model with eight prediction models: SVR, RFR, MLP, LSTM, GRU, ILSTM, CNN-LSTM, and CNN-GRU to prove the validity and accuracy of CNN-ILSTM prediction model. The experimental results show the MAE of CNN-ILSTM is 8.4134, MSE is 202.1923, R2 is 0.9601, and the training time is 85.3 s. The goal of carbon peak and carbon neutralization puts forward higher requirements for the energy and electricity industry development in China. Jing-jin-ji region (short for Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Provinces) as an important economic growth pole in China, its electric power industry realizing low-carbon transformation can play a good exemplary role nationwide. To clarify the key factors affecting carbon dioxide emission from electric power industry and analyze the relationship between emission and regional economic growth, the paper established decoupling effort model based on LMDI two phases decomposition model and Tapio decoupling index. Firstly, we collected the data of Jing-jin-ji region from 2000 to 2017 and conducted factors decomposition. The results show that: among the ten key factors affecting electric power industry CO2 emission, power generation and consumption ratio, fossil energy consumption coefficient and industrial structure have the most significant effect on CO2 emission reduction, with contribution rates of − 23.27, − 16.50 and − 11.91%, respectively. Per capita GDP and total population are the main positive driving factors, with contribution rates of 132.20% and 23.38%, respectively. Then from the perspective of decoupling relationship, the electric power industry in Jing-jin-ji region has entered a weak decoupling state since the Eleventh Five Year Plan with the decoupling index declined from 0.85 in 2004 to 0.38 in 2017. Excluding the influence of economic development, there are six driving factors to realize the weak decoupling, including (1) Power generation and consumption ratio effect, (2) Industrial structure effect, (3) Industrial power consumption intensity effect, (4) Fossil energy consumption coefficient, (5) Thermal power proportion effect and (6) Fossil energy power generation structure effect, in which the decoupling degree decreases in turn. The total population effect, transmission and distribution loss effect and resident power consumption intensity effect have not achieved decoupling status. At last, based on the model calculation results, we put forward suggestions to promote the low-carbon development of power industry in Jing-jin-ji region, for example, accelerate industrial structure upgrading and the adjustment of power generation structure; Strengthen electricity demand side management; Promote the construction of ultra-high voltage and smart grid as a whole. The 2022 Winter Olympics were held in the three competition zones of Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou, China. The venues of this Winter Olympics were scattered and the terrain was complex. Moreover, the medical resources of Hebei and Beijing were relatively unbalanced. In the medical security of major events, the connection between first aid and in-hospital processes is of the utmost importance to rescue quality. 5th generation mobile network (5G) applications in medical scenarios are on the rise. It would be of great relevance to fully use 5G's low-latency and high-speed features to share the process information of patients, ambulance personnel, and the destination hospital's rescue team at emergency scenes and in transportation, improving rescue efficiency. This paper proposes a system scheme of cross-institutional emergency health information sharing based on 5G and augmented reality wearable devices. It also integrates the construction method of monitoring and other sign data sharing, in addition to testing the proposed scheme's service quality in 5G environments. In the deployment area of the 5G emergency medical rescue information sharing scheme for the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, we selected two designated medical support institutions for testing. The test adopted a combination of fixed-point and driving tests to experiment on the service data, voice service, and streaming media indicators. The 5G signal's coverage rate was close to 100%, the standalone connection's success rate was 100%, and the drop rate was 0. The average downlink rate of multiple scenarios was 620mbps, and the average uplink rate of 5G was over 71.8mbps, which is higher than the average 5G level in China. The downlink rate was more than 20 times larger than the 4th generation mobile network (4G) rate. This study's proposed scheme demonstrates the importance of 5G applications in emergency response and support, in addition to providing a suitable scheme for the integration of 5G networks in the medical scene. With economic development and the acceleration of urbanization, China's energy demand has gradually increased and brought a lot of energy-related CO2 emissions. Energy-related CO2 emissions are affected by a variety of factors. Quantifying the correlation between energy-related CO2 and driving factors and constructing the driving factor system are conducive to predict the future energy-related CO2 emissions and analyze the impact of driving factors. In this paper, the improved grey relational analysis (IGRA) was proposed to screen the influencing factors of energy-related CO2 emissions considering the sample difference, and the factor analysis (FA) was used to reduce dimensionality of the influencing factors. Then, a carbon dioxide emission forecasting model based on the bacterial foraging optimization algorithm (BFO) and the least square support vector machine (LSSVM) was proposed. Empirical analysis results of Hebei show that the LSSVM optimized BFO significantly improves the accuracy of energy-related CO2 emissions forecasting, and IGRA-FA-BFOLSSVM model is significantly better than BP, PSOBP, SVM, and LSSVM models. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of the proposed model is 0.374%. The forecasting results of the supplementary case show that the model has better generalization ability. In addition, education and technological progress have proven to be important drivers of energy-related CO2 emissions. Industrial spatial agglomeration is the most prominent geographical feature of economic activities. This paper examined the current situation of manufacturing industry agglomeration in Hebei Province by using the industrial location quotient and exploratory spatial data analysis. The results showed that (1) the industrial location quotient of 11 cities' 31 manufacturing industries in Hebei Province indicated that there was a significant difference among manufacturing industry agglomeration of the 11 cities in Hebei Province. (2) Global spatial autocorrelation of manufacturing industry agglomeration showed that TA (Manufacture of Textile, Apparel), T (Manufacture of Textile), PFM (Manufacture and Processing of Ferrous Metals), CF (Manufacture of Chemical Fibre), LFF (Manufacture of Leather, Fur, Feather and Its Products and Footwear), AAE (Manufacture of Articles for Culture, Arts and Crafts, Education, Sport Activities and Entertainment Goods) and RP (Manufacture of Rubber and Plastic) showed agglomeration characteristics. (3) According to the industrial location quotient and local spatial autocorrelation, the spatial cluster of manufacturing industry agglomeration in Hebei Province was divided into "Diffusion Centre", "Primary Diffusion Centre", "Polarization Centre" and "Less Developed Area". The use of Internet data to carry out geographic study has become an academic hotspot in recent years. We referred to the "Zhongke Beauty Index" and crawled 530 thousand POIs (POI: Point of interest) to carry out regional construction evaluation in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The results showed that: (1) Geographic big data provided detailed information for fine-grained regional research, and the POI evolution tree model revealed the shortcomings of regional development. (2) The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei comprehensive beauty index in 2019 was 0.21, and Beijing and Tianjin are far ahead of Hebei in terms of ecology and culture. Specifically, the POI types of eco-environment construction of research area were single; the industrial development construction presented a trend of multi-center gathering; the social harmony construction has formed a gathering circle in Beijing; the eastern and central regions were the dominant regions in terms of institutional improvement construction; and the cultural inheritance construction was the shortest board in research area. (3) The evaluation ranking was sensitive to the population and the size of the area in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. When evaluating, the uncertainty caused by the characteristics of indicators and POIs should be fully considered. China, the world's largest carbon emitter, has one of the most stringent provincial emissions reduction programs, incorporated into its Five-Year National Plan to reduce carbon emissions. However, the widening energy intensity gap between provinces poses a great challenge for carbon reduction. In this study, we analyze the convergence of Energy intensity (EIC), i.e., the time-dependent decrease of differences among regional energy intensity over time focusing on a data set of 30 Chinese provinces from 2000 to 2015. Our goal is to identify the provinces that are responsible for the observed divergence in energy intensity and identify the factors causing that divergence in each individual case. The Theil index is used to capture inter-provincial energy inequality. We use the LMDI decomposition analysis to identify the drivers of energy inequality (energy consumption structure, energy efficiency, and industrial structure). The results suggest that reducing energy intensity in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Hebei is the key to solving China's increasing energy intensity "gap" dilemma. The factors causing the energy intensity divergence in Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang are related to lagging economic growth and low energy efficiency, which impedes carbon emission reductions significantly. The factors causing the divergence of energy intensity in Hebei are rooted in its heavy industrial structure. As a politically and culturally important city cluster, the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region (BTH) has huge electricity and water consumption, while the local power generation capacity and water resources may not be sustainable long term according to the current power generation ratio. We introduced up-to-date strategic policies in China, carbon peaking and carbon neutrality (dual carbon goals), to assess their impact on environmental protection and economic development. Thus, we constructed a dynamic multi-regional computable general equilibrium model to simulate these changes in BTH. We designed four carbon reduction scenarios to explore the impact of policies including carbon taxes, investment, and renewable energy subsidies individually or combined. The findings reveal that implementing these policies together can increase the proportion of renewable energy in power generation to 17.2% (Beijing), 9.4% (Tianjin), and 33.2% (Hebei) by 2060. Under various policy scenarios, the Tax Scenario shows the largest water withdrawal savings, while the Investment Scenario shows the largest GDP growth by 2060. The combined implementation of these policies may minimize the negative impact on the economy while developing an environmentally friendly region. The results of the Combination Scenario are closest to carbon neutrality, narrowing the gap to 10.71%, 9.98%, and 9.85%, respectively. Conservation (water and electricity) and carbon reduction can provide significant support for carbon neutrality and sustainable development strategies. As a main type of urban construction land, urban-industrial land is used to provide the judging criteria for construction land scale in the planning period when urban population, industrial development, investment scale, and other conditions are uncertain in China; however, research on expected indicator such as urban-industrial land in overall land use plan mainly focuses on qualitative analysis; quantitative analysis research has not yet been carried out. Using MATLAB R2016a software modeling tools to establish GM (1, 1) model and RBF neural network model, respectively, this paper predicted the demand of urban-industrial land in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Urban Agglomeration. Comparing the predicated results with the actual value of urban-industrial land in Beijing, Tianjin, and 11 prefecture-level cities in Hebei Province, we determined the reasonable prediction model for urban-industrial land after testing the accuracy of the two prediction models. The results showed that the RBF neural network model was the more reasonable prediction model for urban-industrial land. Using the predicted results of the RBF neural network model, combining expected indicators of overall land use plan (2006–2020) in Beijing and Tianjin, as well as 11 prefecture-level cities in Hebei Province in the planning target year, determined remaining usable time of urban-industrial land. Finally, combined with the actual scale of urban-industrial land in 2015 and the predicated scale of urban-industrial land in 2020, the remaining usable time of each city's urban-industrial land was calculated in terms of the average annual growth rate of urban-industrial land from 2009 to 2015. According to the comparative relationship between the remaining usable time and the remaining time of the overall land use plan (5 years), urban-industrial lands were divided into three kinds of regulation zones: reasonable reduction zone, optimized adjustment zone, and core development zone. The policy implications for urban-industrial land in each regulation zone were also provided. Ecological security and sustainable utilization of water resources have become increasingly important focal areas in today's conversation about water resource management. Ecological footprint models of water resources are commonly used to analyze these factors; however, traditional models do not consider regional and interannual differences. Here, an improved model by calculating water resource equilibrium factors (γw) was used to simulate the water resources ecological footprint (EFw) and water resources ecological carrying capacity (ECw) of Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei. Ecological deficit and surplus (EDS), water load index (WRL), and ecological footprint of water resources per 104 Chinese yuan (WFG) were used to evaluate sustainable water usage. The findings reveal that γw is discrepant in across regions and years, as were EFw and ECw. Over the course of the study, EFw and ECw of Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei increased by > 25 and 46%, respectively. The sustainable utilization of water resources in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region was found to be poor, but the utilization efficiency had improved through time. Finally, an uncertainty analysis was performed to determine how to improve sustainable development of water resources in Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei. Results suggested that reducing the discharge of sewage could reduce EFw and reducing the water consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP could reduce WRL. Projecting the future extreme high-temperature risk under the background of global warming and urbanization is essential to the collaborative development of Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei (BTH). In this study, based on the global climate simulation data from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) and the fine land-cover data, we use the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model coupled with the building effect parameterization (BEP) and building energy model (BEM) at 3-km grid spacing to project the changes in the intensity, frequency, and risk of extreme high temperature over the BTH urban agglomeration. The results show that under the future shared socioeconomic pathway scenario (SSP245), the average extreme high-temperature intensity (EHI) in the BTH will increase by 0.71 °C and 2.12 °C in the middle and late twenty-first century, respectively, compared with that in the reference period (2005–2014), which are 0.23 ℃ and 0.58 ℃ more than that only considering global warming, respectively. The average extreme high-temperature frequency (EHF) will increase by 99 h and 200 h, 53 h and 72 h more than that considering only climate change, respectively. The average high-temperature risk in the BTH for 20-year and 50-year return periods will increase by 1.9 times and 2.4 times in the middle twenty-first century, respectively, and expand to 8.0 times and 12.9 times in the late twenty-first century, respectively. As a model of the combination of nostalgia and creative products, ethnic cultural heritage carry the function of shaping and spreading geo-culture. Its unique geo-cultural context, as a link, shows the historical inheritance of local culture. The deep deconstruction of its emotional identity helps to strengthen this identity and stimulate more cultural and creative designs with national and local characteristics. While culture prospers, the local cultural and creative economy is strengthened and cultural confidence and national self-confidence are further enhanced. Based on the New Year paintings of Wuqiang in Hebei, which have a strong folk vernacular and geo-cultural character in northern China, in the process of using the reconstructed pattern elements for clothing design, 156 questionnaires were collected through questionnaire interviews and fsQCA was used to analyze the emotional identity of products with high geo-cultural recognition. The study finds that while the injection of regional culture plays a role in the development of products, people's emotional identification with vernacular cultural and creative products actually depends on a combination of causal paths, with beauty and elegance more important than place and humanity as commonly believed to reflect geographic cultural identity. fsQCA was used to analyze the emotional identity of products with high geo-cultural recognition. To evaluate the implementations of Cancer Screening Program in Urban Hebei and to model the cost-effectiveness of a risk-based breast Cancer Screening Program. Women aged 40–74 years were invited to participate the Cancer Screening Program in Urban Hebei form 2016 to 2020 by completing questionnaires to collect information about breast cancer exposure. Clinical screening including ultrasound and mammography examination were performed. We developed a Markov model to estimate the lifetime costs and benefits, in terms of quality-adjusted life years (QALY), of a high-risk breast Cancer Screening Program. Nine screening strategies and no screening were included in the study. The age-specific incidence, transition probability data and lifetime treatment costs were derived and adopted from other researches. Average cost-effectiveness ratios (ACERs) were estimated as the ratios of the additional costs of the screening strategies to the QLYG compared to no screening. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were calculated based on the comparison of a lower cost strategies to the next more expensive and effective strategies after excluding dominated strategies and extendedly dominated strategies. ICERs were used to compare with a willingness-to-pay (WTP) threshold. Sensitivity analysis was explored the influence factors. A total of 84,029 women completed a risk assessment questionnaire, from which 20,655 high-risk breast cancer females were evaluated, with a high-risk rate of 24.58%. There were 13,392 high-risk females completed the screening program, with participation rate was 64.84%. Undergoing ultrasound, mammography and combined screening, the suspicious positive detection rates were 15.00%, 9.20% and 19.30%, and the positive detection rates were 2.11%, 2.76% and 3.83%, respectively. According to the results by Markov model, at the end of 45 cycle, the early diagnosis rates were 55.53%, 60.68% and 62.47% underwent the annual screening by ultrasound, mammography and combined, the proportion of advanced cancer were 17.20%, 15.85% and 15.36%, respectively. Different screening method and interval yield varied. In the exploration of various scenarios, annual ultrasound screening is the most cost-effective strategy with the ICER of ¥116,176.15/QALY. Sensitivity analyses demonstrated that the results are robust. Although it was not cost effective, combined ultrasound and mammography screening was an effective strategy for higher positive detection rate of breast cancer. High-risk population-based breast cancer screening by ultrasound annually was the most cost-effective strategy in Urban Hebei Province. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to examine the effect of spatial scale and building exposure distribution on the pure rate of earthquake catastrophe insurance, this study described three modules for rate determination, put forward the general assumptions and principles for calculating the pure insurance rate, and introduced three types of building distribution and their calculation. Taking Tangshan City of Hebei Province in China as an example, we analyzed the pure rate of regional earthquake insurance in terms of spatial scale and building exposure distribution by using the method of control variables. The results show that for districts (or counties) with large differences in seismic risk, the risk areas can be further divided to apply differential rates. In areas with a diverse distribution of potential earthquake source areas and large differences in building density, there is a risk of overestimating or underestimating the pure rate of earthquake insurance when buildings are distributed evenly or partially evenly. This violates the break-even principle of rate setting. This study also provides a reference for earthquake catastrophe insurance companies to choose the spatial scale and the detailed level of exposure distribution in rate determination. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, with the capital Beijing as the core, carries a profound geo-culture and gathers numerous intangible cultural heritages. Studying the spatial distribution characteristics and influencing factors of intangible cultural heritage can help to propose positive suggestions for protection and development from the perspective of sustainable development. Taking 329 national intangible cultural heritages in Beijing-Tianjin—Hebei as the research objects, and using ArcGIS spatial analysis technology, combined with methods such as kernel density analysis, standard deviation ellipse and geographical detector, to visualize the spatial distribution of intangible cultural heritages and explore the influencing factors of their distribution. The results show that: (1) the distribution of intangible cultural heritage in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei is not balanced, mainly concentrated in the central and southern regions, and three high-density core circles are formed in Beijing, Tianjin, and Handan-Xingtai in Hebei Province, showing large differences in spatial distribution density; (2) Traditional techniques, traditional arts, dramatic balladry, sports, music, and medicine show the characteristics of aggregated distribution. folkways, dance, and drama show the characteristics of random distribution. Folk literature shows the characteristics of uniform distribution; (3) The Cultural Development Period is an important evolutionary turning point in the spatial and temporal distribution of intangible cultural heritage in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, as well as an accelerating period in the development of intangible cultural heritage, and completes the transformation from decentralized distribution to localized aggregation distribution. In The Period of Regional Cultural Integration, the peak value is reached; (4) Economic development and social culture have the greatest influence on the spatial distribution of intangible cultural heritage in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, while the influence of physical environment is relatively small. Drought stress is a major environmental limiting factor for grape growth in the Bohai Rim Region (BRR) in China. The investigation of process-based meteorological evaluation indicators is of particular interest to precisely understand the spatiotemporal characteristics of grape drought processes, providing substantial support for grape drought monitoring, prevention, and mitigation. In this study, a daily grape drought index (GDI) was constructed based on a rolling calculation of water profit and deficit. The characteristics of the GDI in historical drought disaster samples were analyzed and drought evaluation level indicators were constructed, facilitating the assessment of process-based grape drought risk. The results showed that duration days with GDI < − 0.4 could be used as drought level indicators, and the thresholds of grape drought in germination to new shoot (P1), flowering to fruit setting (P2), fruit expansion (P3), and coloring to maturity (P4) were 14, 13, 12, and 13 days with GDI < − 0.4, respectively. The identification results calculated by grape drought indicators were basically consistent with historic occurrence levels of grape drought, with 76.9% of the calculated grape level being completely consistent with the historical records and 15.4% being within one level. The process-based grape drought risk gradually decreased with the advancement of grape process, with grape drought risk in the order of P1 > P2 > P3 > P4. The spatial distribution of the urban agglomeration population has changed increasingly in rapid urbanization. It affects the urban economy, environment, transportation, and so on. Therefore, it is of great significance to understand the changes in the spatial distribution of population in urban agglomerations. This study used methods such as population center of gravity migration and Gini coefficient to explore changes in the spatial distribution of urban populations. The study found that the population center of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration first migrated toward Beijing and then away from Beijing. During this process, the Gini coefficient increased from 0.62 to 0.64 and then decreased to 0.58, indicating that the population balance of the urban agglomeration firstly increased and then decreased. This result is consistent with the conclusion that we have established a simulated urban agglomeration for theoretical derivation. That is: in the early stage of urban agglomeration development, the population migrated to the central city; as the population of the central city became saturated, the urban agglomeration developed to a mature stage, and the population began to migrate to the peripheral cities. In this process, the population distribution center of urban agglomeration gradually shifted from central towns to peripheral towns. Previous studies indicate that the incidence of bacillary dysentery is closely related to meteorological factors. However, the impact of temperature and the spatial heterogeneity of the disease in regions of unbalanced socioeconomic development remains unclear. Therefore, this research collected data for 29,639 daily bacillary dysentery cases in children under 5 years of age, as well as the meteorological variables from China's Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region, to analyze the spatial pattern of bacillary dysentery and reveal its nonlinear association with temperature. The SatScan method was employed first, to detect the spatial heterogeneity of the disease risk, and then the distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was used to analyze the relationships between the daily minimum, mean, and maximum temperatures and bacillary dysentery in the stratified heterogeneous regions. The results indicated that bacillary dysentery incidence presented statistically significant spatial heterogeneity. The area of highest risk was found to be Beijing and its neighboring regions, which have high population densities. There was also a positive association between bacillary dysentery and temperature. Hotter temperatures were accompanied by higher relative risks. In the most likely spatial cluster region, the excess risk (ER) values for a 1°C rise in minimum, mean, and maximum temperatures above the median were 4.65%, 11.30%, and 19.21%, respectively. The effect of temperature on bacillary dysentery peaked at a lag of 3 to 4 days. The findings of this study will aid risk assessments and early warning systems for bacillary dysentery. Frequent occurrences of late spring frost disaster create severe agricultural/forest damage, even given the background of global warming. In the warm temperate zone of China, which is the largest planting area for fresh apricot, late spring frost disaster has become one of the major meteorological hazards during flowering. To prevent cold weather–induced apricot frost disaster and reduce potential losses in related fruit economic value, it is vital to establish a meteorological indicator for timely and accurate identification of cold weather process–based apricot frost disaster, to provide support for timely apricot frost monitoring and warning in late spring. In this study, daily minimax temperature ( T min ) and apricot frost disaster data during flowering were combined to establish meteorological identification indicators of apricot frost based on cold weather processes. A process-based apricot frost model f (D , T cum) was firstly constructed, and characteristics of T cum (accumulated harmful temperature) were explored under different D (duration days) based on the representation of historical apricot frost processes. Thresholds for the T cum for apricot frost in 1, 2, 3, 4, and more than 5 days of apricot frost process were determined as − 1.5, − 2.9, − 4.4, − 5.8, and − 7.3 °C, respectively. Validation results by reserved independent disaster samples were generally consistent with the historical records of apricot frost disasters, with 89.00% accuracy for indicator-based identification results. Typical process tracking of the proposed identification indicator to an apricot frost event that occurred in North Hebei during April 3–9, 2018, revealed that the indicator-based identification result basically coincides with the historical disaster record and can reflect more detailed information about the apricot frost process. It is of great importance to explore the future spatiotemporal dynamics of key meteorological hazard factors in Xiongan New Area, an area of great strategic significance under construction in China. Based on 6.25 km high-resolution downscaling projection data under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, Mann–Kendall trend and linear trend were analyzed, and then stationary generalized extreme value (GEV) and time-varying GEV methods were determined to calculate the extremes of four key meteorological hazard factors with return periods of 10, 20, 30, 50 and 100 years during the projection period 1991–2050. Results show that extremes of annual maximum daily precipitation and annual maximum amount of consecutive precipitation under two climate scenarios will not increase too much. Extremes of annual maximum temperature will increase by above 1.5 °C under RCP4.5 scenario in most grids and above 1.9 °C under RCP8.5 scenario. Extremes of annual longest consecutive high-temperature days will increase by above 0.9d under RCP4.5 scenario and above 1.6d under RCP8.5 scenario. On the whole, the hazard of flood disaster will hardly show any change up to 2050, but there will be relatively higher flood hazard in Xiongxian county and its adjacent region. The risk of urban waterlogging is increasing with global climate change and rapid urbanization, especially for urban agglomeration like Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region. In this study, we obtain the urban waterlogging risk index of the BTH urban agglomeration and considering the hazard, exposure, and vulnerability factors, we assess waterlogging risks in the built-up area of the BTH for two periods (1961–1990 and 1991–2019). We analyze the economic and social data as well as the climate data from 149 meteorological observation stations in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei provinces. The results showed that for the two considered periods, the area with the lowest (level 1) waterlogging risk has decreased by nearly 50%, and the second-lowest (level 2) ones have increased by nearly 55%. Although the area higher risk has decreased by 17%, the difference among each city is quite large. Among them, the areas at level 3 have increased by 52% and 51% in Beijing and Handan, respectively. During the years 1991–2019, the areas with risks of level 3 and above are mainly found in Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Qinhuangdao, Handan, and Xingtai. Among them, Beijing has the highest waterlogging risk. In particular, the areas with risk of level 3 and above have increased by 76% in the past 30 years. The areas with the highest risk level (level 4) of waterlogging in Beijing were mostly found in the downtown areas (Haidian, Chaoyang, Dongcheng, and Xicheng districts). This study provides a scientific background for urban waterlogging risk management and implementation of the national and regional strategy for the development of the BTH region. Particulate matter (PM) is the primary air pollutant in northern China. The PM2.5/PM10 ratio has been used increasingly as an indicator to reflect anthropogenic PM pollution, but its advantages compared with individual PM2.5 or PM10 concentrations have not been proven sufficiently by experimental data. By dividing Hebei Province (China) into seven natural ecological regions, this study investigated the spatial characteristics of the PM2.5/PM10 ratio and its relationships with PM2.5, PM10, economic density, and wind speed. Results showed that the PM2.5/PM10 ratio decreased from east to west and from south to north, with an annual average value in 2019 of 0.439–0.559. The characteristics of the spatial variation of the PM2.5/PM10 ratio were different to those of either PM2.5 or PM10 concentration, indicating that PM pollution reflected by the PM2.5/PM10 ratio is not entirely consistent with that by PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations. In comparison with PM2.5 or PM10 concentration, the PM2.5/PM10 ratio had higher (lower) correlation with economic density (wind speed), indicating that the PM2.5/PM10 ratio is a better indicator used to reflect the intensity of anthropogenic emissions of PM pollutants. According to the characteristics of the spatial variations of the PM2.5/PM10 ratio and the PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations, the seven ecological regions of Hebei Province were categorized into four different types of atmospheric PM pollution: "three low regions," "three high regions," "one high and two low regions," and "one low and two high regions." Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), predominantly occurs among infants and children. Previous studies have shown that suitable, stable temperatures favor HFMD virus reproduction; however, temperature fluctuations also affect virus transmission, and there are, so far, no studies concerning the association between such fluctuations and the incidence of HFMD. The objective of this study was to map the spatial-temporal distribution of HFMD incidence and quantify the long-term effects of temperature fluctuations on HFMD incidence in children. HFMD cases in children under five, from January 2009 to December 2013, in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei provinces of China, were used in this study. The GeoDetector and Bayesian space-time hierarchy models were employed to explore the spatial-temporal association between temperature fluctuations and HFMD incidence. The results indicate that HFMD incidence had significant spatial stratified heterogeneity (GeoDetector q-statistic = 0.83, p < 0.05), and that areas with higher risk mainly appeared in metropolises and their adjacent regions. HFMD transmission was negatively associated with temperature fluctuations. A 1 °C increase in the standard deviation of maximum and minimum temperatures was associated with decreases of 8.22% and 11.87% in the risk of HFMD incidence, respectively. The study suggests that large temperature fluctuations affect virus growth or multiplication, thereby inhibiting the activity of the virus and potentially even leading to its extinction, and consequently affecting the spatial-temporal distribution of HFMD. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region experienced the most rainfall in 1994 and the least rainfall in 1997 during the last 20 years. Utilizing the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with a single-layer urban canopy model (UCM), we investigate the possible effects of urbanization on summer precipitation under different climate backgrounds using the two extreme years. By comparing the results of control and sensitivity runs, we find totally different effects in the 2 years. In 1994, the rainfall and rainfall frequency decrease in most areas due to urbanization, and decreases in the rainfall intensity occur in urban areas of Beijing, Tangshan, and Shijiazhuang. In 1997, the rainfall, rainfall frequency, and intensity are reduced in southwest of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, while the change is opposite in northeast. Urbanization alters the diurnal distribution of rainfall, the energy budget, and the water vapor content in the atmosphere. Due to the decrease in city evaporation and transpiration, the surface latent heat flux is reduced. The water vapor mixing ratio in urban area decreases apparently from surface to 850 hPa, while it increases from 850 to 600 hPa. Overall, the reduction of water vapor mixing ratio in 1994 is more than that in 1997, which implies that the “dry island effect” caused by urbanization is stronger in the wet year than that in the dry year. The impacts of emissions from industry, power plant, transportation, residential, and biogenic sources on daily maximum surface ozone (O) over the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region in North China in the summer of 2007 were examined in a modeling study. The modeling system consisted of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and the photochemical dispersion model, CAMx. The factor separation technique (FST) was used to quantify the effect of individual emission source types and the synergistic interactions among two or more types. Additionally, the effectiveness of emission reduction scenarios was explored. The industry, power plant, and transportation emission source types were found to be the most important in terms of their individual effects on ODM. The key contributor to high surface O was power plant emissions, with a peak individual effect of 40 ppbv in the southwestern BTH area. The individual effect from the biogenic emission category was quite low. The synergistic effects from the combinations of each pair of anthropogenic emission types suppressed O formation, while the synergistic effects for combinations of three were favorable for O formation when the industrial and power plant emission source types coexisted. The quadruple synergistic effects were positive only with the combination of power plant, transportation, residential, and biogenic sources, while the quintuple synergistic effect showed only minor impacts on O concentrations. A 30% reduction in industrial and transportation sources produced the most effective impacts on O concentrations, with a maximum decrease of 20 ppbv. These results suggested that the synergistic impacts among emission source types should be considered when formulating emission control strategies for O reduction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies of the modern relationship between pollen, vegetation and land-use are essential to infer past human impact on vegetation from pollen records. Nevertheless, such investigations are relatively few in China. We present here a study of pollen assemblages from sediment samples collected from irrigation pools in the Tuoliang and Qipanshan catchments in northern China. Pollen and spores from natural vegetation such as Artemisia, Chenopodiaceae, Pinus and Selaginella sinensis dominate the pollen assemblages, while pollen types which could be from crops such as cereals, Brassicaceae, Fabaceae, Solanaceae, Apiaceae and Cucurbitaceae are common but not abundant. Pollen percentages of Artemisia and Chenopodiaceae become less with decreasing altitude, while Pinus and S. sinensis percentages increase, indicating that saccate Pinus pollen and S. sinensis spores are transported further than non-saccate Artemisia and Chenopodiaceae pollen, and differential sorting of pollen is occurring during transport in river water. Proportions of pollen from farmland and crops increase with decreasing altitude, showing that pollen percentages of crops might be a good indicator of the extent of farmland. A linear correlation analysis between pollen percentages and vegetation proportions shows that pollen percentages of crops are positively correlated with proportions of farmland, while correlation between pollen percentages of trees, shrubs and herbs and proportions of woodland, scrubland and grassland respectively is poor. This study indicates that the relationship between pollen percentages and vegetation proportions can be explained by the differences of pollen productivity, dispersal and deposition, and might be the basis for a modelling approach to infer past vegetation cover in northern China. Determining whether air temperatures recorded at meteorological stations have been contaminated by the urbanization process is still a controversial issue at the global scale. With support of historical remote sensing data, this study examined the impacts of urban expansion on the trends of air temperature at 69 meteorological stations in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei Province over the last three decades. There were significant positive relations between the two factors at all stations. Stronger warming was detected at the meteorological stations that experienced greater urbanization, i.e., those with a higher urbanization rate. While the total urban area affects the absolute temperature values, the change of the urban area (urbanization rate) likely affects the temperature trend. Increases of approximately 10% in urban area around the meteorological stations likely contributed to the 0.13°C rise in air temperature records in addition to regional climate warming. This study also provides a new approach to selecting reference stations based on remotely sensed urban fractions. Generally, the urbanization-induced warming contributed to approximately 44.1% of the overall warming trends in the plain region of study area during the past 30 years, and the regional climate warming was 0.30°C (10 yr) in the last three decades. Traditional statistics, geostatistics, fractal dimensions, and geographic information systems (GIS) were employed to study the temporal-spatial variability of soil total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) levels in Xinji District, Hebei Province area of the North China Plain from 1980 to 2007. The results indicate that nutrient levels follow normal or lognormal distributions. The TN content was 0.59 ±0.155 g kg in 2007, an increase of 0.44 g kg compared with that of 1980. In 2007, the TP content was 1.21 ±0.227 g kg, an increase of 0.01 g kg from 1980. The geostatistical analysis showed that the distribution of these soil nutrients in the study area exhibits a trend and anisotropy. The range and [ C/( C + C)] of TN and TP in 1980 were all less than in 2007. The ordinary kriging interpolation method was used to analyze the nutrient contents differences between 1980 and 2007. The results indicate that soil TN levels have increased over the 27-year period, and the area where the TN level had increased by at least 0.4 g kg was about 61.7% of the district. The area where the TP content increased covered about 58.4% of the district. The variance analysis indicated that land-use type had a clear influence on the distribution and change in TN and TP content. Using the 3-D box-counting dimension method combined with GIS, the fractal dimension of soil nutrient spatial distribution over the two periods showed that in 27 years, the fractal dimension of TN increased from 1.95 to 2.02, and the fractal dimension of TP increased from 1.89 to 2.01, indicating that the complexity of the spatial distribution of all nutrient contents had increased. The endophytic bacterial diversity in the roots of rice ( Oryza sativa L.) growing in the agricultural experimental station in Hebei Province, China was analyzed by 16S rDNA cloning, amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA), and sequence homology comparison. To effectively exclude the interference of chloroplast DNA and mitochondrial DNA of rice, a pair of bacterial PCR primers (799f–1492r) was selected to specifically amplify bacterial 16S rDNA sequences directly from rice root tissues. Among 192 positive clones in the 16S rDNA library of endophytes, 52 OTUs (Operational Taxonomic Units) were identified based on the similarity of the ARDRA banding profiles. Sequence analysis revealed diverse phyla of bacteria in the 16S rDNA library, which consisted of alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon subclasses of the Proteobacteria, Cytophaga/Flexibacter/Bacteroides (CFB) phylum, low G+C gram-positive bacteria, Deinococcus-Thermus, Acidobacteria, and archaea. The dominant group was Betaproteobacteria (27.08% of the total clones), and the most dominant genus was Stenotrophomonas. More than 14.58% of the total clones showed high similarity to uncultured bacteria, suggesting that nonculturable bacteria were detected in rice endophytic bacterial community. To our knowledge, this is the first report that archaea has been identified as endophytes associated with rice by the culture-independent approach. Background: The People's Republic of China (PRC) has conducted several different population policies since its establishment. Although fertility has declined dramatically in the past three decades, the degree to which this was the result of the different population policies is still under debate. Purpose: We attempt to evaluate the effect of the different formal population policies conducted in the PRC by looking at the fertility behavior of rural women. Unlike urban women, rural women experienced less social control (in the absence of a work unit) and received fewer benefits from adhering to the one-child policy. Data: The data analyzed were collected from a stratified sample of households from 288 villages in 9 counties of Hebei Province, PRC, between 1996 and 1999. The number of children ever born was reported by 4,168 ever-married women aged 25 and over who had had at least one birth. Findings: Our analysis indicates that the formal population policies of the PRC had little effect on the number of children ever born to rural women in Hebei. These retrospective data, by cohort, indicate consistently declining fertility since the revolution (1949). Limited child bearing was associated with age and the level of education. Controlling for the effect of age and education, women born after 1960, at whom the one-child policy was directed, actually had more children than older women. Conclusions: The Chinese fertility decline, at least as reflected in the experience of rural women in Hebei Province, derived mainly from secular changes in women's access to education and other social resources rather than from the direct effects of population policies. Background: Quantifying CO2 emissions from cities is of great importance because cities contribute more than 70% of the global total CO2 emissions. As the largest urbanized megalopolis region in northern China, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Jing-Jin-Ji, JJJ) region (population: 112.7 million) is under considerable pressure to reduce carbon emissions. Despite the several emission inventories covering the JJJ region, a comprehensive evaluation of the CO2 emissions at the prefectural city scale in JJJ is still limited, and this information is crucial to implementing mitigation strategies. Results: Here, we collected and analyzed 8 published emission inventories to assess the emissions and uncertainty at the JJJ city level. The results showed that a large discrepancy existed in the JJJ emissions among downscaled country-level emission inventories, with total emissions ranging from 657 to 1132 Mt CO2 (or 849 ± 214 for mean ± standard deviation (SD)) in 2012, while emission estimates based on provincial-level data estimated emissions to be 1038 and 1056 Mt. Compared to the mean emissions of city-data-based inventories (989 Mt), provincial-data-based inventories were 6% higher, and national-data-based inventories were 14% lower. Emissions from national-data-based inventories were 53–75% lower in the high-emitting industrial cities of Tangshan and Handan, while they were 47–160% higher in Beijing and Tianjin than those from city-data-based inventories. Spatially, the emissions pattern was consistent with the distribution of urban areas, and urban emissions in Beijing contributed 50–70% of the total emissions. Higher emissions from Beijing and Tianjin resulted in lower estimates of prefectural cities in Hebei for some national inventories. Conclusions: National-level data-based emission inventories produce large differences in JJJ prefectural city-level emission estimates. The city-level statistics data-based inventories produced more consistent estimates. The consistent spatial distribution patterns recognized by these inventories (such as high emissions in southern Beijing, central Tianjin and Tangshan) potentially indicate areas with robust emission estimates. This result could be useful in the efficient deployment of monitoring instruments, and if proven by such measurements, it will increase our confidence in inventories and provide support for policy makers trying to reduce emissions in key regions. The study aimed to investigate the effect of five inactive yeasts on the metabolites of Chardonnay dry white wines vinified in 2016 in Shacheng Manor Wine Co. Ltd., Hebei province, China. In this research, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy coupled multivariate analysis (1H NMR-PCA/PLS-DA) were applied to identify and discriminate the different wine products. The results of principle component analysis (PCA) showed that there was significant difference between the metabolites of sample wines with different inactive yeasts, among them, the content of polyols, organic acids, amino acids and choline was notably influenced. The results of partial least squares discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) confirmed that the metabolites contributed to the discrimination of the wines were 2,3-butanediol, ethyl acetate, malic acid, valine, succinic acid, lactic acid, tartaric acid, glycerol, gallic acid, choline, proline, and alanine.
