Fracture network fracturing is pivotal for achieving the economical and efficient development of shale gas, with the connectivity among fracture networks playing a crucial role in reservoir stimulation effectiveness. However, flow back data that reflect fracture network connectivity information are often ignored, resulting in an inaccurate prediction of the effective fracture network volume (EFNV). The accurate calculation of the EFNV has become a key and difficult issue in the field of shale fracturing. For this reason, the accurate shale gas effective fracture network volume inversion method needs to be improved. Based on the flow back characteristics of fracturing fluids, a tree-shaped fractal fracture flow back mathematical model for inversion of EFNV was established and combined with fractal theory. A genetic algorithm workflow suitable for EFNV inversion of shale gas was constructed based on the flow back data after fracturing, and the fracture wells in southern Sichuan were used as an example to carry out the EFNV inversion. The reliability of the inversion model was verified by testing production, cumulative gas production, and microseismic results. The field application showed that the inversion method proposed in this paper can obtain tree-shaped fractal fracture network structure parameters, fracture system original pressure, matrix gas breakthrough pressure, fracture compressibility coefficient, reverse imbibition index, equivalent main fracture half length, and effective initial fracture volume (EIFV). The calculated results of the model belong to the same order of magnitude as those of the HD model and Alkouh model, and the model has stronger applicability. With the increase of shale gas resource exploitation in our country during recent decades, the situations of low gas production, fast production decline rate, and low flowback rate have been appearing in field production. It is an urgent problem to be solved in shale gas production and it is therefore necessary to study the interaction of the shale gas reservoir and the detained fracturing fluid. In this paper, the Longmaxi Formation shale samples of Sichuan Basin were selected for a water invasion experiment. The fracture propagation law, the water invasion front location, and the water invasion thickness of deep and shallow shale reservoirs after water invasion were compared and analyzed by CT scanning technology. Based on the analysis of the experimental mechanism, a numerical simulation model was established. The dimensionless permeability and thickness of the fracturing fluid invasion layer were introduced to analyze the positive and negative effects of fracturing fluid retention on the reservoir. The results show that during the hydraulic fracturing of shale gas wells, fracturing fluid can quickly enter the complex fracture network, and then slowly enter the shale matrix under various mechanisms to form the fracturing fluid invasion layer. Compared with shallow shale reservoirs, deep shale reservoirs have lower porosity and permeability, which propagates microfractures in the matrix induced by fracturing fluid retention, and results in a smaller fracturing fluid invasion layer thickness. Both the negative effect of fracturing fluid retention on shale damage and the positive effect of microfracture formation and propagation exist simultaneously. The higher the dimensionless fracturing fluid invasion layer permeability, the more complex the fracture network formed in the fractured reservoir will be, resulting in a longer stable production period and a better development effect. When the dimensionless fracturing fluid invasion layer permeability is greater than 1, that is, when the positive effect of fracturing fluid retention is greater, and the thicker the dimensionless fracturing fluid invasion layer is, the better the development effect will be. Combining reservoir characteristics and fracture development, the key to obtaining high productivity of a shale gas well is to optimize the soaking time and the speed of flowback in order to extend the stable production period. In this paper, the characteristics of the fracturing fluid invasion layer and the influence of fracturing fluid retention on gas well productivity are deeply studied, which provides a certain theoretical basis for the optimization of shale gas extraction technology and the improvement of the gas–water two-phase productivity prediction method for fractured horizontal wells. The Sichuan Basin is a significant region for exploration and development of shale gas in China, and it is essential to clarify the impact of deep shale gas reservoir parameters on cost-effective development at scale to ensure national energy security. Rock physics modeling is a significant means of communicating the physical and elastic parameters of rocks. A rock physics modeling method applicable to fractured shale gas reservoirs is proposed for the current situation of complex fluid relationships in shale gas reservoirs and unclear characteristics of gas identification seismic response. In this paper, based on the Self Consistent Approximation (SCA) model and the differential effective medium (DEM) model, the anisotropic source of shale is used as a starting point to add bound water, kerogen, clay, and brittle minerals, the Schoenberg linear slip theory is used to add fracture disturbance effects, and then the Brown–Korringa model is used to perform fluid replacement under anisotropic conditions. Finally a rock physics model applicable to fractured shale gas reservoirs is obtained, and the established rock physics model is used for analysis of elastic parameters, Thomsen parameters, and fracture weakness parameters. Rock physics tests were performed on shale in southern Sichuan as an example. The experimental results show that the model established by the process can accurately invert the longitudinal and transverse wave velocities of the shale, which can provide a conceptual basis for the study of fractured shale gas reservoirs. The geological storage of CO2 is a critical technique for reducing emissions, which significantly contributes to the mitigation of the greenhouse effect. Currently, CO2 is often geologically stored in coal seams, hydrocarbon reservoirs, and saline aquifers in order to store CO2 and improve the oil and gas recovery simultaneously. Shale formations, as candidates for CO2 storage, are drawing more attention because of their rich volumes. CO2 storage through shale formations in the Sichuan Basin, China, has tremendous potential because of the readily available CO2 injection equipment, such as abandoned shale gas wells. Therefore, we review the potential of using these wells to store CO2 in this paper. Firstly, we review the status of the geological storage of CO2 and discuss the features and filed applications for the most studied storage techniques. Secondly, we investigate the formation properties, shale gas field development process, and characteristics of the abandoned wells in the Sichuan Basin. Additionally, after carefully studying the mechanism and theoretical storage capacity, we evaluate the potential of using these abandoned wells to store CO2. Lastly, recommendations are proposed based on the current technologies and government policies. Most scholars believe that transgression events can contribute positively to organic matter enrichment and shale gas sweet spot development, while whether or not regression events are conducive to shale gas sweet spot development remains to be further discussed. Variations in organic carbon content (TOC), and major and trace elements at the Rhuddanian–Aeronian stage in the Luzhou area, the southern margin of Sichuan Basin, were analyzed in this paper. We discuss differences in paleoenvironment organic matter enrichment and shale sweet spot development during transgression and regression. A transgressive system tract (TST) occurred during the early Rhuddanian stage, while early highstand system tracts (Ehst-1 and Ehst-2) occurred during the late Rhuddanian stage and Aeronian stage, and a late highstand system tract (LHST) developed during the late Aeronian stage. A rise in sea level during the TST in the upper Yangtze resulted in an anoxic environment, where a continuous upwelling current brought about a large number of nutrients in the seawater, significantly increasing paleoproductivity. Strong tectonic subsidence, weak chemical weathering, and a rising sea level together led to a low terrigenous debris supply in the catchment area. Therefore, paleoproductivity and redox conditions were the primary controlling factors of organic matter enrichment at the TST stage, with a clastic supply of secondary importance. With the advance of the Guangxi orogeny, the organic matter enrichment at the EHST-1, EHST-2, and LHST stages was mainly controlled by redox conditions and debris supply. A comparison of the key physical parameters and geochemical indicators of shale reservoirs from these four system tracts suggests that two shale sweet spot types (type I and II) were developed during the Rhuddanian–Aeronian stage, occurring in the TST and EHST-2 stages. High TOC and high microcrystalline quartz content are key to developing type I sweet spots, while enhanced anoxic conditions in the bottom water caused by ephemeral, small-scale sea level rises are the main determinant of class II sweet spots in the later EHST stage. The shale of the Wufeng–Longmaxi formation in the Sichuan Basin is the preferred layer for shale gas exploration in China, and its petrophysical characteristics are the key to geological and engineering sweet spot prediction. However, the characteristics and impact mechanisms of its acoustic wave velocity and elastic anisotropy are currently unclear. In this paper, the Wufeng–Longmaxi shale is taken as the research object, and the P-wave and S-wave velocities of the samples are tested under the loading and unloading processes of confining pressure. The stress sensitivity variations in parameters such as wave velocity, wave velocity ratio, and anisotropy are discussed. P-wave and S-wave anisotropy parameters are correlated under different pressure conditions. X-ray diffraction, casting thin sections, scanning electron microscopy, micron CT scanning, and other analytical techniques are used to explore the mechanisms of stress sensitivity of elastic parameters. The research results indicate that: (1) the acoustic velocities of samples from different angles are V90° > V45° > V0°, and there is a positive correlation between the wave velocity and the confining pressure. After unloading the confining pressure, irreversible plastic deformation occurs due to the closure of some microfractures in the rock core, causing the wave velocity to be higher than the initial value. (2) The stress sensitivity coefficient of the P-wave (The mean is 3.00 m·s−1·MPa−1) is higher than that of the S-wave (the mean is 1.23 m·s−1·MPa−1), and the stress sensitivity coefficient of the compacted stage (the mean is 3.02 m·s−1·MPa−1) is higher than that of the elastic stage (the mean is 1.21 m·s−1·MPa−1). (3) The anisotropy of the P-wave and S-wave is negatively correlated with the confining pressure. When the confining pressure is loaded to 65 MPa, the change rate of the P-wave anisotropy coefficient is 23%, and its stress sensitivity is higher than that of S-wave anisotropy coefficient (the change rate is 13.7%). After unloading the confining pressure, the degree of anisotropy is reduced due to the closure of some microfractures. The empirical formula of P-wave and S-wave anisotropy parameters under different pressures is established through linear regression, which can provide a reference for mutual predictions. (4) The variation in wave velocity anisotropy with stress can be divided into stress and material anisotropy, which are related to the directional arrangement of microfractures and clay minerals, respectively. The quantitative characterization of shale anisotropy can be realized by evaluating the development degree of reservoir fractures and mineral components, providing a reference for logging interpretations, sweet spot prediction, and fracturing construction of shale gas reservoirs. The sedimentary environment and organic matter enrichment relationship of the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation black shale, Guanyinqiao mudstone, and Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation black shale in the Sichuan Basin of Weiyuan are analyzed using geochemical methods such as organic carbon, sulfur, major elements, and trace elements. The experimental results illustrate that the upper section of the Wufeng Formation and the lower section of the Longmaxi Formation are organic matter enrichment layers. The presence of P indicates a high productivity level in the Sichuan Basin from the Late Ordovician to the Early Silurian. In addition, indicators such as V/Cr, Ni/Co, and S/C suggest that the Wufeng Formation was deposited under anoxic reductive conditions, that the ice age Guanyinqiao segment was in an oxygen-rich to oxygen-poor environment, and that the Longmaxi Formation was in a sulfidic environment. Mo/TOC indicates that the Wufeng Formation shale was controlled by a restricted basin and that the Guanyinqiao segment and the Longmaxi Formation were in a medium-to-weak retention environment. The weak correlation of TOC with P/Al and Al indicates that the level of primary productivity and terrigenous detritus had a minor effect on the organic matter enrichment of the Wufeng and Longmaxi Formation black shale. Conversely, the positive correlation of TOC with V/Cr and Ni/Co illustrates that the anoxic reductive sedimentary environment is the main factor affecting the organic matter enrichment of the Wufeng and Longmaxi Formation black shale. Based on these studies, the development model of organic-rich shales of the Ordovician–Silurian in Weiyuan, Sichuan Basin is proposed. Microfractures can connect isolated pores within shale, significantly increasing the shale's storage capacity and permeability, and benefiting shale gas exploitation. Therefore, the quantitative characteristics of microfractures are important parameters for shale reservoir evaluation. In this paper, taking the Jurassic Da'anzhai Member (J1z4) lacustrine shale in the Yuanba area of the northern Sichuan Basin as an example, we propose a method for comprehensive and quantitative characterization of shale microfractures that combines rock thin section (RTS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations. The different magnifications of RTSs and SEM images lead to the identification and characterization of microfractures of different scales using these two methods. RTSs are mainly used to characterize microfractures with widths larger than 10 μm, while SEM is mainly used to characterize microfractures with widths smaller than 10 μm. These techniques can be combined to comprehensively and quantitatively characterize microfractures of different scales in shale. The microfracture characterization results show that the average total porosity of the J1z4 shale is 4.46%, and the average microfracture surface porosity is 1.20% in the Yuanba area. The calculated average percentage of microfracture porosity to total porosity is 21.09%, indicating that the J1z4 shale reservoir space is dominated by pores and has the conditions for stable shale gas production and potential for shale gas exploration. However, the percentage of microfracture porosity to total porosity of shale near faults and fold zones approaches or exceeds 50%, which may lead to the loss of shale gas. The entire process of shale gas generation, migration, and accumulation involves the diffusion of shale gas, and it is impossible to disregard the harm that gas diffusion does to gas reservoirs. The research object for this paper is the Longmaxi Formation shale gas reservoir in the Weiyuan area of the Sichuan Basin. Based on Fick's diffusion law, an innovative mathematical model of shale gas diffusion is established, and it is clarified that the diffusion amount mainly depends on the free gas content and the diffusion coefficient. Based on the theory of fluid dynamics, the calculation equation of formation paleo-pressure is innovatively deduced. The equation fully considers gas migration, temperature and pressure changes, and the pressure control effect of organic matter gas generation, and restores the evolution history of free gas content in the reservoir. The evolution process of temperature, pressure and stratigraphic physical properties in the study area is the first to calculate the diffusion evolution history and cumulative diffusion amount of shale gas reservoirs in the study area, the reliability of the calculation results is verified by geochemical parameters. Studies have revealed that the existing Longmaxi Formation shale in the Weiyuan area of Sichuan Basin varies from 14.10 to 16.50 × 104 m3/m2 per unit area, with an average diffusion loss of 0.30 × 1012 m3 gas in the positive part and 0.30 × 1012 m3 in the negative part. The total lost gas accounts for around 1.72 times the present recappable reserves and is estimated to be 0.43 × 1012 m3 in volume. Brittleness is important in the evaluation of the fracturing ability of shale reservoir and has a significant impact on shale gas exploration and development. This paper discusses the characteristics and controlling factors of brittleness of continental shale in the Da'anzhai Member of the Ziliujing Formation of Lower Jurassic age in the northeast Sichuan Basin. Continental shale lithofacies and their associations were grouped into four main rock types: clayey shale, silty shale, shell calcareous clayey shale, and silty clayey shale, characterized by the high clay content and local enrichment of carbonate minerals as a whole. Compared with the marine shale, the continental shale contained a low content of siliceous minerals, a high content of carbonate minerals, and a large number of shell limestone interlayers. Carbonate minerals play an important role in controlling the brittleness of continental shale. The shale interlayers were mainly shell limestone interlayers with a thickness of several centimeters and a large number of shell laminates with thicknesses of several millimeters were also observed. The shell laminates were mainly filled with calcite. Due to the dissolution process, a large number of bedding joints and corrosion joints were formed in the calcite shell layers. In the interlayers with a high shell content, a large number of microfractures developed. Electrical exploration has become an important means of shale gas reservoir exploration and evaluation, and is expected to play a key role in the later stages of reservoir fracturing and development. At present, the research on the electrical response characteristics of shale gas reservoirs and their relationship with reservoir parameters is extensive and in-depth, but there is little research on their complex resistivity anisotropy characteristics and influencing factors, which restricts petrophysical modeling and reservoir parameter prediction, and reduces the reliability of shale gas exploration and reservoir evaluation by electromagnetic methods. In this paper, shale samples from the Longmaxi Formation and the Wufeng Formation of shale gas wells in southern Sichuan were collected, the complex resistivity of 34 shales in bedding direction and vertical bedding direction were measured, and the induced polarization (IP) parameters of shales were extracted by inversion. The electrical anisotropy response characteristics under different temperature and pressure conditions were analyzed, and the influencing factors and laws of complex resistivity anisotropy of shales were revealed. Combined with the test results of shale porosity and permeability, the evaluation model of resistivity, polarizability and porosity and permeability parameters was established. The research results have formed a set of testing methods and analysis techniques for electrical anisotropy of shale reservoirs, which are mainly based on complex resistivity parameter testing. It is helpful to understand the electrical anisotropy characteristics of shale gas reservoirs in southern Sichuan; this will provide the theoretical and physical basis for shale gas reservoir evaluation and fracturing monitoring by electrical exploration. Shale gas reservoirs are unconventional resources with great potential to help meet energy demands. Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing have been extensively used for the exploitation of these unconventional resources. According to engineering practice, some shale gas wells with low flowback rate of fracturing fluids may obtain high yield which is different from the case of conventional sandstone reservoirs, and fracturing fluid absorbed into formation by spontaneous imbibition is an important mechanism of gas production. This paper integrates NMR into imbibition experiment to examine the effects of fractures, fluid salinity, and surfactant concentration on imbibition recovery and performance of shale core samples with different pore-throat sizes acquired from the Longmaxi Formation in Luzhou area, the Sichuan Basin. The research shows that the right peak of T2 spectrum increases rapidly during the process of shale imbibition, the left peak increases rapidly at the initial stage and changes gently at the later stage, with the peak of the left peak shifting to the right. The result indicates that water first enters the fracture system quickly, then enters the small pores near the fracture wall due to the effect of the capillary force, and later gradually sucks into the deep and large pores. Both imbibition rate and capacity increase with increased fracture density, decreased solution salinity, and decreased surfactant concentration. After imbibition flowback, shale permeability generally increases by 8.70–17.88 times with the average of 13.83 times. There are also many microcracks occurring on the end face and surface of the core sample after water absorption, which may function as new flowing channels to further improve reservoir properties. The dynamic characteristics of shale gas wells are complexly affected by the gas–water two-phase flow. Based on the special flow mechanism of gas–water two-phase flow in shale gas reservoir, this paper establishes a mathematical model for gas–water two-phase flow in shale gas multi-stage fractured horizontal wells, introduces the eigenvalue method and orthogonal transformation, and obtains the analytical solution of the two-phase flow model. The gas–water two-phase flow rules and main influence factors of shale gas wells were identified, further combined with the flowback test characteristics and data of the shale gas wells in southern Sichuan, the characteristic parameters for the evaluation of the gas well flowback effect were determined, and an index system was established for the evaluation of shale gas well flowback. The analysis result shows that the shale gas well flowback effect has a good relationship with its production capacity, which is mainly reflected in the flowback characteristic parameters such as gas breakthrough time, gas breakthrough flowback rate, 30 d flowback rate, and maximum production flowback rate. The shale gas wells with lower flowback factors have a better production capacity than those with higher flowback factors. The flowback evaluation index system can accurately forecast the shale gas well production capacity in its initial stage, and furthermore offer guidance to promptly ascertaining the block development potential and formulating the development schemes. The Lower Paleozoic marine shale in southern China has undergone several strong tectonic transformations in an extensive region outside the Sichuan Basin. Although some shale strata underwent strong deformation, they still contain a significant amount of shale gas. The gas preservation mechanism in the strongly deformed shale has become the focus of attention. In this paper, the Lower Cambrian gas-bearing shale samples with a strong deformation taken from an exploration well in northern Chongqing, China, were investigated on their pore types and structure, with the aim to reveal the reason for the gas preservation. The pore types of the Lower Cambrian shale are dominated by microfractures and interparticle (interP) pores occurring mainly between clay minerals and between organic matter (OM) and clay minerals, while pores within OM that can be observed by FE-SEM (field emission-scanning electron microscopy) are rare. The shale has a low porosity, with an average of 1.56%, which is mainly controlled by the clay mineral content. The adsorption experiments of low pressure N2 (LPNA) and CO2 (LPCA) indicate that the shale is rich in micropores and small mesopores (<2–3 nm) provided mainly by OM, but mesopores with a size range of 3–50 nm are underdeveloped. The shale, as revealed by LPNA data, has dominant slit-like or plate-like pores and an obvious low-pressure hysteresis (LPH), indicating a low gas diffusion. The deformed shale samples with a removal of OM by oxidation and their isolated kerogen further indicate that the LPH is completely related to OM, without any relationship with minerals, while an undeformed shale sample, taken from another well for a comparison, has no obvious LPH for both of its OM-removed sample and kerogen. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the relative data, it is suggested that the nanopores related to OM and clay minerals in the shale were significantly altered owing to the deformation, with a result of the pores being squeezed into the slit-like shape and converted into micropores. This paper documents depositional structures and their reservoir characteristics in the Wufeng–Longmaxi shale from outcrops and cores using thin sections, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis, carbon–sulfur analyzer, helium porosimeter, decay permeameter, and focused ion beam scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM). In the study area, clayey and silty laminae abound in the shale. Clayey laminae are rich in bedding parallel fractures, microfractures, and organic pore networks. Silty laminae are rich in isolated inorganic pores and limited amounts of bedding non-parallel fractures. Various inter-lamination of clayey and silty laminae form five depositional structure types which are closely related to the ancient hydrodynamics, paleoredox condition, and sedimentation rate and have significant impacts on shale fractures, microfractures, pore types, pore-size distribution, and porosity. For the paper lamination (PL) and grading lamination composed of siltstone and claystone (GL-SC), organic pores account for 71.6% and 61.4% of the total, and dense bedding parallel and non-parallel fractures intersect to form connective networks. In the interlaminated lamination composed of siltstone and claystone (IL), grading lamination composed of claystone (GL-C) and structureless beds (SB), organic pores merely account for 20% to 51.8% of the total and minor isolated bedding parallel fractures occur. Among five depositional structure types, the PL and GL-SC have the highest porosity, permeability, TOC content, siliceous content, organic pore proportions, and ratios of horizontal to vertical permeability, which help them become shale gas exploration and development targets. Deep and ultra-deep shale gas resources have great potential, but well drilling faces many challenges. The Polycrystalline Diamond Compact (PDC) bit has become the primary rock-breaking instrument for oil and gas drilling. Reasonable bit structure designs can promote rock-breaking efficiency and extend service life. In this study, reverse modeling technology is used to analyze the structural characteristics of PDC bits collected in the field, and the influence of the structural characteristics of the bit at a specific interval on the rate of penetration (ROP) and drill footage is investigated using the Spearman rank correlation coefficient method. The number of blades, cutting angle of the cutters, crown rotation radius, internal cone angle, and diameter of the cutters are discovered to be the main structural characteristics that affect the ROP and footage of the bits, and the degree of influence varies depending on the formation conditions. The number of blades, crown rotation radius, inner cone angle, and cutting angle of the cutters have a significant impact on the ROP, whereas blade thickness, gauge length, gauge width, nozzle equivalent diameter have a significant impact on the bit footage. In addition, a back propagation (BP) neural network is utilized to build a prediction model of bit footage and ROP over a certain interval based on the structural characteristics of the bit. The goodness of fit of the model is greater than 85%, and its accuracy is high. Based on the usage of the bit, the evaluation and prediction of the bit can provide a reference for the structural design and optimization of the bit in a specific interval, guide the bit selection work, rationally plan the drilling operation, and reduce the drilling cost. In recent years, the rapid expansion and development of the shale gas industry in the Sichuan Basin has coincided with a series of unexpected moderate-sized earthquakes. Given that the Sichuan Basin is situated within a stable interior block, the focal mechanism of the 2019 earthquake sequence (ML4.7, ML5.4, and ML5.2) in the Weiyuan-Rongxian area remains a subject of debate. In this study, we propose a joint InSAR- and PCA- based inversion method utilizing the distributed Mogi model to investigate the spatial-temporal characteristics of a gas reservoir and evaluate the induced Coulomb stress change. The surface deformation derived from Sentinel-1 data between 2015 and 2021 was consistent with the spatial distribution of production wells, and it correlated with the temporal changes in reservoir volume associated with the shale gas operating process. The Coulomb stress loading on the regional faults suggests that human activities associated with shale gas operation likely triggered the three moderate earthquakes. Furthermore, our results indicate Coulomb stress loadings of 10 kPa, 15 kPa, 5 kPa, 3 kPa, and 87 kPa on the Dongxingchang fault, Gaoqiao fault, Dayaokou fault, Niujingao fault, and Lijiachang fold, respectively. Marine–continental transitional shale has become a new field for shale gas exploration and development in recent years. Its reservoir characteristics analysis lags significantly behind that of marine shale, which restricts the theoretical research on the accumulation of marine–continental transitional shale and the progress of exploration and development. The shale pore system is complex and has strong heterogeneity, which restricts the fine evaluation and optimization of the reservoir. Based on nitrogen adsorption–desorption experiments, the morphology and structural characteristics of coal-bearing shale pores were analyzed, and then the micro-pore structure heterogeneity was quantitatively characterized based on fractal theory and nitrogen adsorption–desorption data, and the relationship between pore structure parameters and their influence on fractal characteristics were discussed. The hysteresis loop of nitrogen desorption isotherm mainly belongs to type B, indicating ink bottle, flat plate, and slit are the main pore shapes. The pore size distribution curves are left unimodal or multimodal, with the main peak around 4 nm and 20–60 nm. Smaller pores develop a larger specific surface area, resulting in a high value of fractal dimension (2.564 to 2.677). The rougher the pore surface and the larger the specific surface area provide an adequate adsorption site for shale gas adsorption and aggregation. We aimed to investigate the corrosion patterns and the main controlling factors of N80 steel and P110 steel tubing under different sections. Conducting weight loss corrosion experiments for 168 h using high-temperature and high-pressure autoclaves to simulate the corrosion behavior of two types of casing materials, N80 steel and P110 steel, in different well sections under specific conditions of CO2 content, chloride ion concentration, temperature, pressure, and sulfate-reducing bacteria population in highly mineralized formation water. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to analyze the corrosion products, surface morphology, and elemental composition of the two steel pipes. Additionally, 3D microscopy was employed to observe the morphology and measure the dimensions of localized corrosion pits. Under different well sections, the corrosion products formed on N80 steel and P110 steel mainly consist of FeCO3, and crystalline salts of chlorides present in the solution medium. Under low-water-cut conditions, narrow and deep corrosion defects were observed, while narrow and shallow corrosion defects were found under high-water-cut conditions. In the upper wellbore section, both steel pipes exhibited dispersed and thin corrosion product films that suffered from rupture and detachment, resulting in severe localized corrosion. In the middle wellbore section, the corrosion product film on N80 steel comprised irregularly arranged polygonal grains, some of which exhibited significant gaps, leading to extremely severe corrosion. For P110 steel, the corrosion product film was also dispersed and thin, with extensive detachment and extremely severe corrosion. In the lower wellbore section, both steel pipes were covered with a dense layer of grains, with smaller gaps between them, effectively protecting the metal matrix from corrosion. Consequently, the corrosion rate decreased compared to the middle section but still exhibited severe corrosion. In low-water-cut conditions, attention should be given to the risk of column safety due to corrosion from condensate water and CO2, as well as the size of narrow and deep corrosion defects in the middle wellbore section. In high-water-cut conditions, it is recommended to use corrosion inhibitors in combination while focusing on SRB bacteria corrosion in the upper wellbore section, condensate water in the middle section, CO2 content and chloride ion coupling in the lower section, and the size of narrow and shallow corrosion defects causing column safety risks. The Permian shale in Northeast Sichuan is an important shale oil and gas resource potential area, and the study of its organic matter characteristics and paleoenvironmental analysis is of great significance for revealing the shale oil and gas formation mechanism and resource evaluation. In this study, the organic matter of Permian shales in northeast Sichuan was carefully studied based on various analytical tools, such as petrology, laser Raman, microscopy, and principal trace elements, and the paleoenvironmental parameters of the shales were comprehensively analysed. A detailed study of the organic matter characteristics of Permian shales in northeast Sichuan reveals important features such as organic matter fractions, structural characteristics, maturity and sources. The results show that the organic matter of the shale consists mainly of solid bitumen, putrescine group, specular group and multicellular planktonic algae. Petrological observations and laser Raman analyses indicate a high maturity of the organic matter and a high content of organic carbon (TOC), showing good hydrocarbon potential. In this study, we reconstructed the palaeoenvironmental parameters and inferred the palaeoenvironmental evolution through palaeoenvironmental analyses of Permian shales in northeast Sichuan. The results of the comprehensive multi-indicator study show that the type of palaeoenvironment at the time of shale deposition was mainly an anoxic-reducing environment, and the depositional conditions were favourable to the enrichment and preservation of organic matter. In summary, the organic matter characteristics and paleoenvironmental analyses of the Permian shales in Northeast Sichuan provide important geological background information for an in-depth understanding of the formation mechanism, exploration potential and development prospect of shale hydrocarbons in this area. Large-scale volumetric fracturing is generally used during shale gas development. The return rate of fracturing fluid is low, and a large amount of slickwater is retained in the reservoir. The adsorption and desorption of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM), an additive commonly used in slickwater, on the surface of shale was studied using Longmaxi shale from the Sichuan Basin. The experimental results showed that the mass ratio of the HPAM solution to shale reached saturation adsorption at 20:1 when the concentration of HPAM solution was 1000 mg/L and 25:1 when the concentration of HPAM solution was 500 mg/L. The mass ratio of the HPAM solution to shale was fixed at 25:1, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached at a HPAM concentration of 1000 mg/L when the aqueous solution temperature was 30 °C and 800 mg/L when the aqueous solution temperature was 60 °C. The Langmuir adsorption model yielded a better fit than the Freundlich adsorption model. The adsorption equilibrium time at 30 °C was at 60 min for a HPAM concentration of 500 mg/L, while for a concentration of 1000 mg/L, it was at 90 min. The adsorption equilibrium time at 60 °C was 40 min for a HPAM concentration of 500 mg/L, whereas it was 60 min for a HPAM concentration at 1000 mg/L. The pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetics model yielded better fits than the pseudo-first order (PFO) kinetics model. The adsorption of HPAM on shale was strong, and the adsorbed HPAM resembled cobwebs adhering to the shale surface. HPAM on the surface of shale after adsorption was able to resist the desorption capacity of water. However, when the amount of adsorbed HPAM on shale increased significantly, the amount of residual HPAM on the surface of the shale decreased rapidly during desorption in deionized water. The desorption of HPAM on the shale surface followed a modified desorption model. Casing deformation is evident during the development of shale oil and gas wells in the Sichuan and Junggar Basins in China. Their casing deformation characteristics, distribution law of deformation points, and main controlling factors were analyzed. According to the analysis results, shear is the main cause of casing deformation of shale oil and gas wells in the Sichuan and Junggar Basins in China and has the characteristics of "a dense heel end and a sparse toe end". Faults account for 75% of casing deformation points, and fault slip caused by multi-stage fracturing is the primary factor responsible. The calculation model for fault slip that takes into account fracturing fluid invasion was established, and the dynamic variation law of fault slip was clarified: the fracturing fluid intruded into the fault, the relative dislocation of the damaged fault was caused by gravity, and the fault slippage was caused by the increase in fault activation length. This resulted in a linear increase in fault slippage, and the slippage reached its maximum when the fracturing fluid completely penetrated the fault and reached the fault boundary. The slip amount has a positive correlation with the fault length and the in situ stress difference; it increases first and then decreases with the increase in the fault dip angle. The overpressure phenomenon is a widespread occurrence in unconventional shale gas reservoirs. Multiple overpressure shale gas fields were discovered in southern China, and there is no doubt that the gas production per well increases with increasing pressure coefficient (the ratio of the reservoir fluid pressure to the corresponding normal hydrostatic pressure). Thus, successful evaluation and production strategies of organic-rich shale deposits require an understanding of the evolution of the pressure coefficient and its controlling factors in these deposits. In this paper, drilling engineering data of a typical well were collected, and clay mineral tests and overburden diffusion coefficient experiments were conducted. Based on multiphysics simulations, this paper analyzes the overpressure characteristics and formation mechanisms of overpressure in the Longmaxi Formation shale, as well as its geological evolution and controlling factors. The results show that the large amount of shale gas is the cause of overpressure formation rather than disequilibrium compaction. The simulation results show that pressure coefficients of the typical well range from 0.84 to 1.49. The current pressure coefficient increases with increasing pressure coefficient after the last hydrocarbon generation. A large initial pressure coefficient (>1.9), short lifting time (<100 Ma) and small lifting amplitude (<4000 m) are favorable for the preservation of shale gas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Against the backdrop of the national strategic goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, the imperative for China's low-carbon new energy transformation is evident. Emerging as an efficient and clean new energy source, the coal-based "three gases" (coalbed methane, tight sandstone gas, and shale gas) have gained prominence. Nevertheless, the current exploration of the coal-based "three gases" is limited to individual reservoirs, posing challenges to achieving overall extraction efficiency. The primary obstacle lies in the conspicuous disparities in gas content among different reservoirs, with the causes of such disparities remaining elusive. To address this issue, this study focused on the Permian Longtan Formation (coal, shale, and tight sandstone) in the southeastern Sichuan Basin. Through a comparative analysis of the mineral composition, organic geochemical features, and pore structure characteristics, this study aimed to delineate reservoir variations and establish a foundation for the simultaneous exploration and exploitation of the coal-based "three gases". The research findings revealed that the differences in reservoir characteristics account for the variations in gas content among coal, shale, and tight sandstone. The mineral composition of the rock formations in the study area primarily consists of quartz, feldspar, clay minerals, pyrite, calcite, and dolomite. The deep shale of the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation in the southern Sichuan Basin has high gas potential. The development characteristics of lamination could significantly impact reservoir property. Samples were investigated using microscopic observation, element analysis, organic petrology analysis, mineralogy analysis, and pore structure analysis to determine the types of laminae and laminasets, clarify the formation conditions of argillaceous lamina and silty lamina as well as their relationships with the sedimentary environment, and explore the influence of laminae on shale reservoir property. Results indicate that the Wufeng Formation shale exhibits weak development of laminae due to bioturbation, while the Longmaxi Formation shale develops continuous, parallel, and plate-like laminae. Compared with light silty lamina-rich shale, dark argillaceous lamina-rich shale usually develops in an anoxic reduction environment, with higher total organic carbon content, porosity, pore volume, specific surface area, and more developed organic matter pores, which can provide greater space for shale gas adsorption and storage. Shales in the middle section of the Longmaxi Formation are characterized by the development of silty-argillaceous interbedded type laminaset, which have good reservoir performance, making them the primary target for deep shale gas exploration and development. When the thermal maturity of the Longmaxi Formation in the southern Sichuan Basin is too high, the pore structure of shale becomes poor. Therefore, to investigate the effect of organic matter thermal maturity on shale pore structure, a study was conducted. Using the Longmaxi Formation shale in the southern Sichuan Basin as an example, the intrinsic relationship between shale porosity, pore structure parameters, organic matter laser Raman maturity, and organic matter graphitization degree was examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, particle helium porosity measurement, organic matter micro-laser Raman spectroscopy, and gas adsorption experiments. The results indicate that thermal maturity is the macroscopic manifestation of the graphitization degree of organic matter, and the correlation coefficient between the two is 0.85. A thermal maturity of 3.5% (with a corresponding organic matter graphitization degree of 17%) aligns with the highest values of shale porosity, pore volume, and pore-specific surface area across all pore size conditions. The evolution model of shale pore structure can be divided into two stages. The first stage is characterized by a thermal maturity between 2.0% and 3.5% (with a corresponding degree of graphitization of organic matter between 0% and 17%). During this stage, the number and connectivity of micro-macropores increase with increasing thermal maturity. The second stage is marked by a thermal maturity between 3.5% and 4.3% (with a corresponding degree of graphitization of organic matter between 17% and 47.32%). Basement faults are present, leading to abnormally high thermal maturity, poor preservation conditions, continuous generation of micropores, better connectivity, and a reduced number of pores. Medium macropores with good connectivity suffer from gas loss in the fracture network, leading to the collapse and disappearance of pores. The economic exploitation of unconventional gas and oil in deep shale relies closely on effective hydraulic fracturing stimulations. However, the fracturing operations of deep shale reservoirs face challenges of insufficient fracture growth and a rapid decline in productivity due to the increasing in situ stress level. In addition, the shale strata on the margin of the Sichuan Basin are frequently folded and faulted, and the change in bedding inclinations significantly complicates the process of hydraulic fracturing. The investigation of the combined effect of the in situ stress level and bedding anisotropy on the hydraulic fracture configuration is vital for fracturing engineering design. To analyze this, we conducted hydraulic fracturing tests on shale cores to simulate the hydraulic fracture initiation and growth from a horizontally positioned perforation. By using acoustic emission detection and CT scans, the influence of natural stress levels and the angle of the shale's bedding on the process of hydraulic fracturing in shale and the resulting fracture geometry were analyzed. The results showed that the area of hydraulic fracture under a higher stress level (σ1 = 50 MPa, σ3 = 40 MPa) was about 13%~23% smaller than that created under the lower stress level (σ1 = 30 MPa, σ3 = 20 MPa) when the bedding angle was smaller than 60°. With the increase in bedding angle, the curves of the fracture area and fracture network index under two different stress levels presented similar decreasing trends. Also, the time from micro-crack generation to sample breakdown was significantly reduced when the bedding orientation changed from the horizontal to vertical position. The increasing stress level significantly increased the breakdown pressure. In particular, the fracturing of shale samples with bedding angles of 0° and 30° required a higher fluid pressure and released more energy than samples with larger bedding inclinations. Additionally, the measurement of the sample radial deformation indicated that the hydraulic fracture opening extent was reduced by about 46%~81% with the increasing stress level. The interaction between shale and various fluids is crucial as it modifies pore structures, which govern the effective development of shale gas and the geological storage of carbon dioxide in shale formations. In this study, samples from the Longmaxi Formation shale in Sichuan Basin of China were exposed to different fluids, including 6 MPa CO2, 12 MPa CO2, 6 MPa CO2+brine, and 12 MPa CO2+brine, at 45 °C for 100 days. Various methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and the low-pressure gas adsorption (N2) test, were adopted to evaluate chemical and structural changes during the exposure process. After being treated with supercritical CO2+brine and subcritical CO2+brine, the shale underwent significant changes in its major element composition. The content of Ca, Al, and K in shale saturated with supercritical CO2+brine decreased from 13.00% to 10.34%, from 3.65% to 3.36%, and from 1.56% to 1.37%, respectively. Meanwhile, the content of Si and Na in the same shale increased slightly after saturation. The amount of quartz and dolomite increased, while the levels of clay and calcite slightly decreased. The surface of the shale sample became rougher and small bumps and cracks appeared after saturation with different fluids, as shown by the FESEM analysis results. Furthermore, the changes in both the total pore volume and pore size followed a similar pattern to the alterations in the specific surface areas. The highest level of variation occurred with the shale that was saturated with 12 MPa of CO2, indicating that gas pressure and CO2 phase state have a significant influence on the shale's pore structure. In addition, the distribution of pore sizes showed a bias towards larger sizes across all diameters; this suggests that the reaction resulted in a decrease in the number of micropores. This also highlights that the impact of varying fluid saturation was primarily focused on micropores and macropores. Thermal maturity of the shales from the Ziliujing Formation of the Jurassic age in the Sichuan Basin is in the hydrocarbon generation window, which makes it a candidate for shale oil and gas development. The meso- and macropore characteristics and heterogeneity of shales are important factors affecting the occurrence and development of oil and gas. However, the meso- and macropores of the Ziliujing shales have not been systematically studied. Thus, the mineral compositions and total organic carbon (TOC) of samples from this formation, as well as its pore structure, are analyzed by low-temperature N2 adsorption technique. Moreover, the heterogeneity of the pores was determined by multifractal analysis. The results show that the Ziliujing shales can be classified into three types according to the distributions of mineral compositions of carbonate and mixed and argillaceous shales. Results revealed that the smallest meso- and macropore volume (PV), the smallest specific surface area (SSA), and the largest average pore diameter (APD) occur in the carbonate shales. However, the largest PV and SSA and the smallest APD are observed in the argillaceous shales. The porosity of carbonate shales is mainly concentrated between 5 nm and 30 nm. Compared with carbonate shales, the porosity with pore sizes less than 30 nm of mixed and argillaceous shales shows a rapid increase. Furthermore, inorganic minerals are the main factors affecting the pore distributions, while TOC shows a weak effect. Herein, clay minerals significantly increase the mesopore volume and the pore number with a size of less than 30 nm. The Dq-q curves reveal that the meso- and macropore distributions of Ziliujing shales show multifractal behavior, but the multifractal characteristics of pores of various shales are distinctly different. The information dimension D1, the Hurst exponent H, and the width of the right side D0–D10 are key indicators to distinguish the local variations within the pore structure of different types of shales. The carbonate shales have the largest multifractal spectra width and the smallest D1 and H, while the opposite trend is found for the argillaceous shales. Clay minerals reduce the heterogeneity of the meso- and macropore distributions and increase the pore connectivity. Nevertheless, the carbonate minerals exhibit a reverse trend. Finally, it was found that TOC does not impact pore complexity as much. Collectively, this study supports our understanding of the occurrence of shale oil within various reservoir facies, thereby providing a guideline for future explorations in the Ziliujing Formation of the Jurassic age in the Sichuan Basin. The microscopic pore throat structure of shale reservoir rocks directly affects the reservoir seepage capacity. The occurrence and flow channels of shale gas are mainly micron–nanometer pore throats. Therefore, to clarify the microstructural characteristics and influencing factors of the deep organic-rich shales, a study is conducted on the marine shale from the Upper Silurian to Lower Ordovician Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation in the southern Sichuan Basin. Petrographic lithofacies division is carried out in combination with petro-mineralogical characteristics, and a high-resolution scanning electron microscope, low-temperature nitrogen and low-temperature carbon dioxide adsorption, and micron-computed tomography are used to characterize the mineral composition and pore structure qualitatively and quantitatively, upon which the influencing factors of the microstructure are further analyzed. The results show that with the increase in burial depth, the total organic carbon content and siliceous mineral content decrease in the Wufeng formation to Long-11 subsection deep shale, while clay mineral content increases, which corresponds to the change in sedimentary environment from anoxic to oxidizing environment. Unexpectedly, the total pore volume of deep shale does not decrease with the increase in burial depth but increases first and then decreases. Using total organic carbon (TOC), siliceous mineral content showed a good correlation with total pore volume and specific surface area, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.7, confirming the predominant role of these two factors in controlling the pore structure of deep shales. This is mainly because the Longmaxi shale is already in the late diagenetic stage, and organic matter pores are generated in large quantities. Clay minerals have a negative correlation with the total pore volume of shale, and the correlation coefficient is 0.7591. It could be that clay minerals are much more flexible and are easily deformed to block the pores under compaction. In addition, the longitudinal heterogeneity of the deep shale reservoir structure in southern Sichuan is also controlled by the thermal effect of the Emei mantle plume on hydrocarbon generation of organic matter and the development of natural microfractures promoted by multistage tectonic movement. Overall, the complex microstructure in the deep shales of the Longmaxi Formation in the southern Sichuan Basin is jointly controlled by multiple effects, and the results of this research provide strong support for the benefit development of deep shale gas in southern Sichuan Basin. Recently, shale gas exploration of the Wufeng-Longmaxi formations (WF-LMX) in the Sichuan Basin has gradually stepped into deep to ultra-deep layers, but the pore types and characteristics of ultra-deep shale still remain unclear. In this study, the WF-LMX ultra-deep organic-rich shale samples in the Eastern Sichuan Basin were collected, and the types and development characteristics of shale pores were investigated by using high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Our results showed that the pores of the WF-LMX ultra-deep shale reservoirs mainly included organic pores, mineral matrix pores (interparticle pores and intraparticle pores), and micro-fractures, which were dominated by organic pores, displaying oval, slit, and irregular shapes and a diameter of mainly 5–45 nm. Organic pores were poorly developed in primary organic matter (e.g., graptolite and radiolarian), while they were well developed in solid bitumen, being the most important nanopore type in shale. The pore development of ultra-deep shale was mainly controlled by the contents of organic matter and brittle minerals. Higher contents of organic matter and quartz are conducive to the development and preservation of organic pores, which are also favorable for ultra-deep shale gas exploration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, new breakthroughs have been made in the field of shale oil and gas exploration in the Lower Jurassic Lianggaoshan Formation in Sichuan Basin. At present, there is a lack of systematic studies on reservoir properties and sedimentary facies of the Lianggaoshan Formation shale. Therefore, in this study, taking the Lianggaoshan Formation in Sichuan Basin as an example, the sedimentary facies types of shale reservoirs and their control over shale oil and gas are systematically studied, based on a large number of outcrops, experimental testing, logging, and seismic interpretation methods. The results show that five sedimentary microfacies are developed in the Lianggaoshan Formation in the study area, namely, semi-deep lake mud, shallow lake mud, wave-influenced shallow lake mud, delta-influenced shallow lake mud, and underwater interbranch bay microfacies. The stratum thickness of the Lianggaoshan Formation is in the range of 26–315 m, and mainly distributed in the eastern region, but rapidly thinned in the northwestern region. The sedimentary sequence framework of the Lianggaoshan Formation has been constructed. Moreover, the lithology of the Lianggaoshan Formation shale has been divided into three types, including shale, massive mudstone and silty mudstone. The brittleness index and total organic carbon (TOC) value of three types of shale show a negative correlation. Silty mudstone has the highest brittleness, while that of black shale is the lowest. For porosity and permeability, massive mudstone is better than silty mudstone, and silty mudstone is better than black shale. There are many kinds of matrix pores in the Lianggaoshan Formation shale, and the development degree of inorganic pores is higher than that of organic pores. Finally, based on the analysis of oil-bearing, pore types, physical properties and productivity, it is considered that black shale facies is the most favorable lithofacies type. Here, we present a detailed comparison of the differences in shale gas between the Sichuan Basin and North America from multiple dimensions, explain how and to what extent recent advances have been made, discuss the current challenges, and provide strategies to deal with these challenges. We demonstrate that a total of 13 graptolite zones developed in the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formations, achieved by representative cores from 32 coring wells and 7 outcrop profiles, can establish the chronostratigraphic framework in the Sichuan Basin, which leads to the potential impact of high-quality reservoir distribution and shale gas production. Shale gas is still faced with the challenges of complex underground and surface conditions, low single-well EUR, and immature deep development engineering technology. To circumvent these issues, here, we propose several strategies, including sweet-spot optimization, low-cost drilling techniques, and efficient fracturing technologies. Our results strengthen the importance of adopting fundamental theoretical research and practical and feasible development goals to realize more commercial discoveries of shale gas of diverse types and higher growth of shale gas reserves and production. In contrast to the widely used sequence stratigraphic models for passive continental margins, the stacking patterns of strata within epeiric seas, which are influenced by regional tectonic activity, may display opposing characteristics during the same geological period. These variations serve as a record of basin evolution and also affect the accumulation of hydrocarbons within the strata. Our study investigated the development potential of the deep Longmaxi Shale in the southern Sichuan Basin by examining the sequence stratigraphy and sedimentary fill patterns. Using a combination of core observation, well-logging data analysis, and 3D seismic profile interpretation, we aimed to gain an understanding of the sedimentary fill history of the Longmaxi Shale during the Early Silurian. Our analysis revealed that deglaciation and regional tectonic events affected the sequence stratigraphy, resulting in unconformities that were identifiable using seismic data and wireline logs. Through an analysis of thirty wireline logs and two seismic profiles, we identified two third-order sequences suggested in the Lower Longmaxi Formation. Within the two third-order sequences were five systems tracts, with the first exhibiting a complete cycle of sea-level change and the second cycle being incomplete due to regional tectonic events. The graptolite succession on the upper Yangtze Platform provided a temporal view of the sequence stratigraphy and sedimentation rates of the Longmaxi Shale. The thickness trends of the systems tracts reflected the interplay of short-term eustasy fluctuations, subsidence, and uplift. Our analysis suggests that regional subsidence played a significant role in the deposition of the second transgressive systems tract (TST) in the Weiyuan and Luzhou areas, which represents a promising target for shale gas exploration, in addition to the first TST. However, the Changning area experienced a relative sea-level decrease due to the intense uplift of the Qianzhogn Paleo-uplift and the increased supply of sediment and is interpreted as a highstand systems tract (HST); it is not considered to have shale gas exploration potential. The Lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi formation and the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation are the two most important shale strata. Although differences between these two shales have become the focus of current research, a comparative study of the depositional environments has not been performed. Using cores of both Longmaxi and Qiongzhusi formations of well W201, the in situ comparison of the sedimentary environment was realized, and the interference of other factors was eliminated, which made the results more reliable. In this study, 72 samples from both formations were collected from well W201, Weiyuan shale gas field, Sichuan Basin. A systematic study, including total organic carbon (TOC) content, mineral composition, and major/trace elemental analyses, was conducted to elucidate the paleoenvironments of the Qiongzhusi and Longmaxi formations. The results show both formations were deposited in non-sulfidic environments. The depositional conditions of the Longmaxi formation varied from reducing to oxidizing from bottom to top. The detrital flow happened during the deposition of the Qiongzhusi formation, which resulted in three stages of the redox conditions, from anoxic to oxic and then to anoxic from bottom to top of the Qiongzhusi formation. The anoxic conditions of the Qiongzhusi formation were considerably stronger than those of the Longmaxi formation. Both formations were deposited in warm and humid climates. Ratios of Eu/Eu*, Y/Y*, LaN/YbN, light rare earth element (LREE) and heavy rare earth element (HREE) revealed that the Longmaxi formation was primarily controlled by seawater, whereas the Qiongzhusi formation was jointly influenced by seawater and hydrothermal fluid. The organic matter enrichment for the Longmaxi and Qiongzhusi formations was controlled by paleoproductivity and redox conditions. Due to the slightly lower paleoproductivity and influence of detrital input, the degree of organic matter enrichment in the Qiongzhusi formation was lower than that in the Longmaxi formation. Marine organic-rich shale is widely distributed in the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation (WF-F) and Silurian Longmaxi Formation (LMX-F), making it an important target for shale gas exploration and development. In order to clarify the paleoenvironment evolution characteristics and the effect of depositional environment on organic matter (OM) accumulation of the marine shale in the Wufeng and Longmaxi Formations, a series of geochemical and petrological experiments were carried out, including TOC, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, XRD, and major and trace element analyses. Research results show that based on the variation characteristics of TOC, mineral composition, and paleoenvironment evolution characteristics, four units can be identified from bottom to top: Wufeng Formation (WF-F), Lower Longmaxi Formation (L-LMX-F), Middle Longmaxi Formation (M-LMX-F) and Upper Longmaxi Formation (U-LMX-F). The high-quality marine shale developed in WF-F and LMX-F in the Zigong area (TOC: 0.65–4.56%, avg. 2.15%) contains type I kerogen (kerogen type index: 86.0–98.3, avg. 92.7) and OM in mature stage (average of Rb and Tmax are 2.94%, 646 °C, respectively). Clay minerals (avg. 42.5%) and quartz (avg. 37.7%) dominate the mineral compositions, with subordinated dolomite (avg. 6.3%), feldspar (avg. 6.0%), calcite (avg. 4.0%), and pyrite (avg. 3.5%). Paleoenvironment indicators suggest that during the sedimentary period of WF-F and L-LMX-F, the paleoclimate condition was humid; the weathering condition, paleosalinity, and redox conditions were the strongest; and there was a relatively high level of paleoproductivity and a relatively low level of terrigenous detritus influx. However, during the period of M-LMX-F and U-LMX-F, the climate gradually changed from warm and humid to hot and dry; the intensity of weathering conditions, paleosalinity, and redox conditions was relatively reduced; terrigenous detritus influx increased; and the paleoproductivity decreased. Relationships between TOC and paleoclimate condition, paleosalinity, redox condition, paleoproductivity, and terrigenous detritus influx suggest that redox condition is most important controlling factor for OM enrichment. A combination of anoxic bottom water conditions and high primary productivity and a relatively low terrigenous input resulted in the enrichment of OM in the WF-F and L-LMX-F, making it a potential exploration and development target. Marine–continental transitional shale is one of the most promising targets for shale gas exploration in the Lower Yangtze region. To investigate the sedimentary environments and the regularity of the enrichment of the Longtan shale, multiple techniques including core and thin-section observations, geochemical and elemental analyses, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and low-pressure nitrogen adsorption (LPNA) were used to analyze the sedimentology, mineralogy, and pore structure of the Longtan shale. The core descriptions and thin-section observations showed that the Longtan shale was deposited in marine–delta transitional environments including delta-front, shore swamp, mixed tidal flat and shallow shelf environments. The Sr/Cu, V/Cr, CIA, EF (Mo), EF (U), and other major and trace element results indicated warm and moist climates and water-reducing conditions in the Longtan period. Both the climate and water conditions were favorable for organic matter production and preservation. The geochemical results showed that the Longtan shale was in the overmature stage (Ro values ranging from 2.4% to 3.57%) and that the average total organic carbon (TOC) content was 5.76%. The pore system of the Longtan shale consisted of inorganic pores with a small number of organic pores and microfractures. The porosity and specific surface area were mainly affected by the TOC and clay mineral contents. An effective combination of brittle mineral particles, organic matter, and clay minerals provided the necessary conditions for pore preservation. The organic pores, intergranular pores in clay minerals, and brittle mineral pores formed the main network system for the Longtan shale. Reservoir characteristics and the occurrence mechanism of shale gas outside of the Sichuan Basin are the research hotspots of normally pressured shales in China. Taking shales on the Anchang syncline from the periphery of the Sichuan Basin as an example, X-ray diffraction, organic geochemistry, and rock physical experiments were carried out to analyze the reservoir characteristics and their main geological controls on the normally pressured shales. The mineralogical results show that the studied shales from the Anchang syncline are mainly siliceous shales with a high quartz content (average of 57%). The quartz content of these normally pressured shales is of biological origin, as shown by the positive correlation between the quartz and organic carbon (TOC) contents. The average porosity of the studied shales is about 2.9%, which is lower than shales inside the Sichuan Basin. Organic matter pores are likely the primary storage space of the normally pressured shale gas, as shown by the positive relationship between the TOC content and porosity. However, scanning electron microscopy observations on the studied shales show that the pores in these normally pressured shales are poorly preserved; many pores have been subjected to compression and deformation due to tectonic movements. Compared to shales inside the Sichuan Basin, the effective thickness of shales outside of the Sichuan Basin is thin and the stratum dip is large. Thus, shale gas outside of the Sichuan Basin is apt to escape laterally along the bedding of the strata. After losing a significant amount of shale gas, the gas pressure decreases to normal pressure, which makes it difficult for the pores to resist compaction from the overlying strata. This is probably why most shale gas reservoirs outside of the Sichuan Basin are normally pressured, while the shale strata inside the Sichuan Basin are commonly overpressured. In recent years, the shale gas in the southern Sichuan Basin has achieved great commercial development, and the Silurian Longmaxi Formation is the main development stratum. In order to solve the problems of great difference production and inaccurate gas content of the Longmaxi Formation shale gas field in the southern Sichuan Basin, based on thin section identification, argon ion polishing-field emission scanning electron microscopy, high pressure mercury injection, low temperature nitrogen adsorption and the fractal method, the micropore structural heterogeneity of the siliceous shale reservoir of the Longmaxi Formation has been studied. The results show the following: The pores of siliceous shale are mainly intergranular pores and organic pores. Image analysis shows that there are obvious differences in size and distribution of shale pores among different types. The micropore structural heterogeneity is as follows: intragranular pore > intergranular pore > organic pore. In the paper, the combination of low temperature nitrogen adsorption method and high-pressure mercury injection method is proposed to characterize the micropore size distribution and fractal dimension, which ensures the credibility of pore heterogeneity. The shale pores are mainly composed of mesopores (2–20 nm), followed by macropores (100–300 nm). For different pore sizes, the fractal dimension from large to small is mesopore, micropore and macropore. Shale pore structure and fractal dimension are correlated with mineral composition and total organic carbon (TOC) content, but the correlation is significantly different in different areas, being mainly controlled by the sedimentary environment and diagenesis. The effective utilization of shale bedding fractures is of great significance to improve shale gas recovery efficiency. Taking the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation shale in Sichuan Basin as the research object, the formation process and mechanism of bedding fractures in marine shale are discussed, based on field observation and description, high-resolution electron microscope scanning, fluid inclusion detection, and structural subsidence history analysis. The results show that the formation of bedding fractures is jointly controlled by sedimentary characteristics, hydrocarbon generation, and tectonic movement: the development degree of bedding (fractures) is controlled by the content of shale organic matter and brittle minerals, and bedding fractures formed in the layers with high organic matter; tectonic movement created stress environment and space for bedding fractures and promoted the opening of bedding fractures; the time for calcite vein to capture fluid is consistent with the time of oil-gas secondary pyrolysis stage. The formation of the calcite vein is accompanied by the opening of fractures. The acid and oil-gas generated in the hydrocarbon generation process occupied the opening space and maintained the bedding fractures open. The study of the formation process of bedding fractures is helpful to select a suitable method to identify bedding fractures, and then effectively use it to form complex fracture networks in the fracturing process to improve shale oil and gas recovery. The porous and low-permeability characteristics of a shale gas reservoir determine its high gas storage efficiency, which is manifested in the extremely high breakthrough pressure of shale. Therefore, the accurate calculation of breakthrough pressure is of great significance to the study of shale gas preservation conditions. Based on a systematic analysis of a low-field NMR experiment on marine shales of the Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin, a shale gas breakthrough pressure determination technique different from conventional methods is proposed. The conventional methods have low calculation accuracy and are a tedious and time-consuming process, while low-field NMR technique is less time-consuming and of high accuracy. Firstly, the NMR T2 spectrum of shale core sample in different states is measured through low-field NMR experiment. The NMR T2 spectra of sample in water-saturated state and dry state are combined to model the mathematical relationship between shale gas breakthrough pressure and NMR T2 spectrum. It is found that the gas breakthrough pressure is power-exponentially related to the geometric mean of NMR T2 spectrum and positively related to the proportion of micropores. Accordingly, the shale gas breakthrough pressure is quickly and accurately calculated using continuous NMR logging data and then the sealing capacity of the shale caprocks is evaluated, providing basic parameters for analyzing unconventional hydrocarbon accumulation, preservation and migration. This technique has been successfully applied with actual data to evaluate the sealing capacity of shale caprock in a shale gas well in the Sichuan Basin. As a kind of clean energy, shale gas has attracted much attention, and the exploration and development potential of shale gas resources in the middle and deep layers is huge. However, due to the changeable geological and burial conditions, complex geophysical responses are formed. Therefore, studying the characteristics of reservoir rock minerals and their complex resistivity response characteristics is helpful to deepen the understanding of the electrical characteristics of shale gas reservoirs and provide theoretical basis and physical basis for exploration and development. The study is based on shale samples from the Longmaxi Formation to the Wufeng Formation of a shale gas well in southern Sichuan, China, and the mineral composition and complex resistivity of shale are measured. Through inversion of complex resistivity model, four IP parameters, namely zero-frequency resistivity, polarizability, time constant and frequency correlation coefficient, are extracted, and the relationship between mineral components of rock samples and IP parameters is analyzed. It is found that the polarizability gradually increases and the resistivity gradually decreases with the increase in borehole depth. With the increase in pyrite content, the polarization increases and the resistivity decreases. The corresponding relational model is established, and it is found that the polarizability is highly sensitive to the characteristic mineral pyrite, which provides more effective data support for the subsequent deep shale gas exploration. The marine shale of the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation–Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation is the main source rock and the target of shale gas exploration in the southern Sichuan Basin. The maturity of organic matter (OM) is a vital indicator for source rock evaluation. Due to the lack of vitrinite, the organic matter maturity of the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formations in the southern Sichuan Basin is difficult to accurately evaluate. In total, 33 core samples of the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formations in the southern Sichuan Basin were selected to observe the optical characteristics of solid bitumen and graptolites and measure their random reflectance. Simultaneously, Raman spectroscopic parameters of kerogen were also used to quantitatively analyze the change in maturity. By using Raman spectroscopic parameters as mediators, conversion equations between graptolite random reflectance (GRor) and equivalent vitrinite reflectance (EqVRo) were established. Taking the calculation results of EqVRo as constraints, the tectono-thermal evolution history of Wufeng–Longmaxi Shale in the southern Sichuan Basin is constructed through basin modelling. The results show that the maturity of Wufeng–Longmaxi Shale in the western Changning, Luzhou-western Chongqing, eastern Changning and Weiyuan areas decreases successively. The EqVRo falls in the ranges of 3.61%~3.91%, 2.92%~3.57%, 3.08%~3.25%, 2.41%~3.12%, and the average EqVRo is 3.73%, 3.30%, 3.18% and 2.80%, respectively. Thermal evolution in western Changning was controlled by the thermal effect of the Emeishan mantle plume and paleo-burial depth, while the thermal evolution of other areas was mainly controlled by paleo-burial depth. This study provides a reliable parameter for the evaluation of thermal maturity and makes a more accurate calibration of the maturity of the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formations in the southern Sichuan Basin; it also expounds the factors for the differences in thermal evolution in different parts of the area. Natural fractures caused by tectonic stress in shale can not only improve the seepage capacity of shale, but also become the migration and loss channel of free gas. Calcite, quartz and other minerals in shale fracture veins record the fluid evolution information of the shale. Through the analysis of different types of fracture cements in the shale of the Silurian–Ordovician Wufeng–Longmaxi Formations in the southern Sichuan Basin, the effect of different fractures on shale gas construction or destruction was clarified. Geochemical investigations included the diagenetic mineral sequences in the hole–cavity veins, paleo-pressure recovery by Raman quantitative analysis, and the environments of diagenetic fluids traced by rare earth elements (REE) signatures. The density, composition, pressure, and temperature properties of CH4-bearing fluid inclusions were determined by Raman quantitative measurement and thermodynamic simulations to establish the trapping condition of the geo-fluids, and so constrain the periods of gas accumulation. The diagenetic sequences in the fracture veins can be summarized as follows: Cal-I→Qz-II→Cal-III. The Cal-I in the bedding fracture veins crystallized in the late Jurassic (~180 Ma), and originated from hydrothermal origin and diagenetic fluid; the Qz-II veins crystallized in the middle Jurassic (~190 Ma); the Cal-III veins in the high-angle fractures precipitated during the early Eocene (~12 Ma), and derived from atmospheric freshwater leaching. Pore fluid pressure gradually increased. The pressure coefficient of the shale gas reservoir gradually increased to strong overpressure from 160 Ma to 86 Ma. Between 75 Ma and the present day, the pore fluid pressure and the pressure coefficient in the shale reservoirs, having been affected by tectonic activities and strata uplift-erosion, have significantly reduced. Bedding slippage fractures play a constructive role in the enrichment of shale gas, and fracture slip can significantly improve fracture permeability. High-angle shear fractures usually cut through different strata in areas with strong tectonic activity, and destroy the sealing of the shale. The entrapment of primary methane gas inclusions recorded the process of excess reservoir pressure reduction, and indicated the partial loss of shale free gas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shale in the Wufeng Formation of the upper Ordovician and Longmaxi Formation of lower Silurian in the Sichuan Basin and its surrounding area is widespread. Shale gas resources are abundant. Shale gas in the Wufeng Formation and the Longmaxi Formation in the basin has been a major breakthrough. The basin margin transition zone in southeastern Chongqing is in an intense tectonic activity area, which is more complicated and special than the stable stratum in the basin. Therefore, it is necessary to put forward higher requirements for preservation conditions and enrichment pattern evaluation of shale gas. Therefore, in view of the complicated structural pattern of the basin margin transition zone in southeastern Chongqing, the preservation conditions and reservoir forming patterns are analyzed through structural evolution, uplift and denudation, fault development, structural styles, roof and floor conditions, and formation pressure. The results show that the main reason for the formation of normal pressure is the late uplift, denudation and fault development. The pressure coefficient from the basin to the outer layer is changed from overpressure to normal pressure, and structural transformation forms the preservation form of shale gas with narrow and steep residual anticline, wide residual syncline and residual slope. The preservation condition evaluation of normal shale gas should be based on structural factors such as structural evolution, structural style, uplift and denudation degree and fault development degree, with formation pressure coefficient as reference condition, combined with material basic conditions such as roof and floor conditions and formation thickness. Shale gas gathering and transportation pipeline poses significant risk due to special geographical conditions and different climatic conditions in high consequence areas such as Sichuan and Chongqing. The risks become critical as gas pipelines run through high consequence areas such as hospital, market, and scenic areas. This study presents a risk classification method for the pipelines running through high consequence areas. The proposed method considers different failure scenarios including third-party damage, corrosion, design and construction defects, mis-operation, and natural disasters. The method uses subjective and objective data from different sources. To minimize the subjectivity and data uncertainty, an improved fuzzy analytic hierarchy process was used to process data. The estimated risk is used to classify different risk zones. After the failure of shale gas pipelines in HCAs, in order to reduce the adverse impact of emergencies, personnel should immediately organize an evacuation to a safe area, focusing on the diagnosis and analysis of risk factors that are more likely to lead to pipeline leakage. The developed classes are verified using field data. The study observes that risk levels classified using the proposed method provide realistic assessments of hazard zoning. The permeability characteristics of natural fracture systems are crucial to the production potential of shale gas wells. To investigate the permeability behavior of a regional fault that is located within the Wufeng Formation, China, the gas permeability of shale samples with natural micro-fractures was measured at different confining pressures and complemented with helium pycnometry for porosity, computed micro-tomographic (µCT) imaging, and a comparison with well testing data. The cores originated from a shale gas well (HD-1) drilled at the Huayingshan anticline in the eastern Sichuan Basin. The measured Klinkenberg permeabilities are in the range between 0.059 and 5.9 mD, which roughly agrees with the permeability of the regional fault (0.96 mD) as estimated from well HD-1 productivity data. An extrapolation of the measured permeability to reservoir pressures in combination with the µCT images shows that the stress sensitivity of the permeability is closely correlated to the micro-fracture distribution and orientation. Here, the permeability of the samples in which the micro-fractures are predominantly oriented along the flow direction is the least stress sensitive. This implies that tectonic zones with a large fluid potential gradient can define favorable areas for shale gas exploitation, potentially even without requirements for hydraulic fracture treatments. Recently, deep and ultra-deep shales (depth >3500 m) of the Lower Paleozoic Wufeng–Longmaxi formations (WF–LMX) have become attractive targets for shale gas exploration and development in China, and their gas contents may be influenced by the occurrence of water to some extent. However, the water content and its distribution in the different nanopores of the deep and ultra-deep shales have rarely been reported. In this study, a suite of the WF–LMX ultra-deep shale samples (5910–5965 m depth) from the Well PS1 was collected for water content measurements, and low-pressure CO2 and N2 adsorption experiments of both as-received and experimentally dried shale samples were carried out to investigate the distribution of water in the different nanopores. Since the studied ultra-deep shales are characterized by higher thermal maturity (equivalent vitrinite reflectance (EqVRo) > 2.5 %) and ultra-low water saturation, the pore water is generally dominated by irreducible water. The content of irreducible water of the studied shales varies from 1.57 to 13.66 mg/g, averaging 6.74 mg/g. Irreducible water may mainly occur in the clay-hosted pores, while it could also be hosted in parts of organic pores of organic-rich shales. Irreducible water is primarily distributed in non-micropores rather than in micropores of the studied shales, which mainly occurs in micopores with a diameter of 0.4–0.6 nm and mesopores with a diameter of 2–10 nm. Very low contents of irreducible water could reduce the specific surface area and volume of non-micropores of the shales to some extent, but the effect of irreducible water on the specific surface area of non-micropores was more significant than the volume of non-micropores, especially for organic-rich shale samples. The ultra-deep shale gas may be predominately composed of free gas, so low contents of irreducible water may play a limited role in its total gas contents. Overall, our findings can be helpful for a better understanding of water distribution in the highly-matured shales, and provide a scientific basis for ultra-deep shale gas exploration. Featured Application: This article demonstrates the seismic fluid mobility attribute technology based on a modified matching pursuit (MP) scheme to determine shale gas reservoir. Paleozoic marine shale gas resources in Southern China present broad prospects for exploration and development. However, previous research has mostly focused on the shale in the Sichuan Basin. The research target of this study is expanded to the Lower Silurian Longmaxi shale outside the Sichuan Basin. A prediction scheme of shale gas reservoirs through the frequency-dependent seismic attribute technology is developed to reduce drilling risks of shale gas related to complex geological structure and low exploration level. Extracting frequency-dependent seismic attribute is inseparable from spectral decomposition technology, whereby the matching pursuit algorithm is commonly used. However, frequency interference in MP results in an erroneous time-frequency (TF) spectrum and affects the accuracy of seismic attribute. Firstly, a novel spectral decomposition technology is proposed to minimize the effect of frequency interference by integrating the MP and the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD). Synthetic and real data tests indicate that the proposed spectral decomposition technology provides a TF spectrum with higher accuracy and resolution than traditional MP. Then, a seismic fluid mobility attribute, extracted from the post-stack seismic data through the proposed spectral decomposition technology, is applied to characterize the shale reservoirs. The application result indicates that the seismic fluid mobility attribute can describe the spatial distribution of shale gas reservoirs well without well control. Based on the seismic fluid mobility attribute section, we have learned that the shale gas enrich areas are located near the bottom of the Longmaxi Formation. The inverted velocity data are also introduced to further verify the reliability of seismic fluid mobility. Finally, the thickness map of gas-bearing shale reservoirs in the Longmaxi Formation is obtained by combining the seismic fluid mobility attribute with the inverted velocity data, and two favorable exploration areas are suggested by analyzing the thickness, structure, and burial depth. The present work can not only be used to evaluate shale gas resources in the early stage of exploration, but also help to design the landing point and trajectory of directional drilling in the development stage. The effect of clay minerals on the methane adsorption capacity of shales is a basic issue that needs to be clarified and is of great significance for understanding the adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of shale gas. In this study, a variety of experimental methods, including XRD, LTNA, HPMA experiments, were conducted on 82 marine shale samples from the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation of 10 evaluation wells in the southern Sichuan Basin of China. The controlling factors of adsorption capacities were determined through a correlation analysis with pore characteristics and mineral composition. In terms of mineral composition, organic matter (OM) is the most key methane adsorbent in marine shale, and clay minerals have little effect on methane adsorption. The ultra-low adsorption capacity of illite and chlorite and the hydrophilicity and water absorption ability of clay minerals are the main reasons for their limited effect on gas adsorption in marine shales. From the perspective of the pore structure, the micropore and mesopore specific surface areas (SSAs) control the methane adsorption capacity of marine shales, which are mainly provided by OM. Clay minerals have no relationship with SSAs, regardless of mesopores or micropores. In the competitive adsorption process of OM and clay minerals, OM has an absolute advantage. Clay minerals become carriers for water absorption, due to their interlayer polarity and water wettability.
