Since financial assets on stock exchanges were created, investors have sought to predict their future values. Currently, cryptocurrencies are also seen as assets. Machine learning is increasingly adopted to assist and automate investments. The main objective of this paper is to make daily predictions about the movement direction of financial time series through classification models, financial time series preprocessing methods, and feature selection with genetic algorithms. The target time series are Bitcoin, Ibovespa, and Vale. The methodology of this paper includes the following steps: collecting time series of financial assets; data preprocessing; feature selection with genetic algorithms; and the training and testing of machine learning models. The results were obtained by evaluating the models with the area under the ROC curve metric. For the best prediction models for Bitcoin, Ibovespa, and Vale, values of 0.61, 0.62, and 0.58 were obtained, respectively. In conclusion, the feature selection allowed the improvement of performance in most models, and the input series in the form of percentage variation obtained a good performance, although it was composed of fewer attributes in relation to the other sets tested. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of global mortality and responsible for millions of deaths annually. The mortality rate and overall consequences of cardiac disease can be reduced with early disease detection. However, conventional diagnostic methods encounter various challenges, including delayed treatment and misdiagnoses, which can impede the course of treatment and raise healthcare costs. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, especially machine learning (ML) algorithms, offers a promising pathway to address these challenges. This paper emphasizes the central role of machine learning in cardiac health and focuses on precise cardiovascular disease prediction. In particular, this paper is driven by the urgent need to fully utilize the potential of machine learning to enhance cardiovascular disease prediction. In light of the continued progress in machine learning and the growing public health implications of cardiovascular disease, this paper aims to offer a comprehensive analysis of the topic. This review paper encompasses a wide range of topics, including the types of cardiovascular disease, the significance of machine learning, feature selection, the evaluation of machine learning models, data collection & preprocessing, evaluation metrics for cardiovascular disease prediction, and the recent trends & suggestion for future works. Stagnation at local optima represents a significant challenge in bio-inspired optimization algorithms, often leading to suboptimal solutions. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a hybrid model that combines the Orca predator algorithm with deep Q-learning. The Orca predator algorithm is an optimization technique that mimics the hunting behavior of orcas. It solves complex optimization problems by exploring and exploiting search spaces efficiently. Deep Q-learning is a reinforcement learning technique that combines Q-learning with deep neural networks. This integration aims to turn the stagnation problem into an opportunity for more focused and effective exploitation, enhancing the optimization technique's performance and accuracy. The proposed hybrid model leverages the biomimetic strengths of the Orca predator algorithm to identify promising regions nearby in the search space, complemented by the fine-tuning capabilities of deep Q-learning to navigate these areas precisely. The practical application of this approach is evaluated using the high-dimensional Heartbeat Categorization Dataset, focusing on the feature selection problem. This dataset, comprising complex electrocardiogram signals, provided a robust platform for testing the feature selection capabilities of our hybrid model. Our experimental results are encouraging, showcasing the hybrid strategy's capability to identify relevant features without significantly compromising the performance metrics of machine learning models. Many methods exist for solving the problem of evaluating efficiency in different processes. They are divided into two basic groups, parametric and non-parametric methods, which can have significant differences in the results. In this study, the authors consider the process of assessing the business climate depending on realized foreign investments. Due to the expected difference in efficiency assessment using different approaches, the goal of this paper is to create an optimization model of an ensemble for efficiency assessment that uses both types of methods with the aim of creating a symmetrical approach that achieves better results than each type of method individually. The proposed solution simultaneously analyzes the impact of different factors on foreign investments in order to determine the most important factors and thus enable each local government to ensure the best possible efficiency in this process. The innovative idea of this study is in the inclusion of classification and feature selection methods of machine learning to fulfill the set goal. Our research, focused on a specific case study in various cities across the Republic of Serbia, evaluated the effectiveness of that process. Recent advances in knowledge graphs show great promise to link various data together to provide a semantic network. Place is an important part in the big picture of the knowledge graph since it serves as a powerful glue to link any data to its georeference. A key technical challenge in constructing knowledge graphs with location nodes as geographical references is the matching of place entities. Traditional methods typically rely on rule-based matching or machine-learning techniques to determine if two place names refer to the same location. However, these approaches are often limited in the feature selection of places for matching criteria, resulting in imbalanced consideration of spatial and semantic features. Deep feature-based methods such as deep learning methods show great promise for improved place data conflation. This paper introduces a Semantic-Spatial Aware Representation Learning Model (SSARLM) for Place Matching. SSARLM liberates the tedious manual feature extraction step inherent in traditional methods, enabling an end-to-end place entity matching pipeline. Furthermore, we introduce an embedding fusion module designed for the unified encoding of semantic and spatial information. In the experiment, we evaluate the approach to named places from Guangzhou and Shanghai cities in GeoNames, OpenStreetMap (OSM), and Baidu Map. The SSARLM is compared with several classical and commonly used binary classification machine learning models, and the state-of-the-art large language model, GPT-4. The Internet of Vehicles(IoV) employs vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology to establish intricate interconnections among the Internet, the IoT network, and the Vehicle Networks (IVNs), forming a complex vehicle communication network. However, the vehicle communication network is very vulnerable to attacks. The implementation of an intrusion detection system (IDS) emerges as an essential requisite to ensure the security of in-vehicle/inter-vehicle communication in IoV. Within this context, the imbalanced nature of network traffic data and the diversity of network attacks stand as pivotal factors in IDS performance. On the one hand, network traffic data often heavily suffer from data imbalance, which impairs the detection performance. To address this issue, this paper employs a hybrid approach combining the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) and RandomUnderSampler to achieve a balanced class distribution. On the other hand, the diversity of network attacks constitutes another significant factor contributing to poor intrusion detection model performance. Most current machine learning-based IDSs mainly perform binary classification, while poorly dealing with multiclass classification. This paper proposes an adaptive tree-based ensemble network as the intrusion detection engine for the IDS in IoV. This engine employs a deep-layer structure, wherein diverse ML models are stacked as layers and are interconnected in a cascading manner, which enables accurate and efficient multiclass classification, facilitating the precise identification of diverse network attacks. Moreover, a machine learning-based approach is used for feature selection to reduce feature dimensionality, substantially alleviating the computational overhead. Finally, we evaluate the proposed IDS performance on various cyber-attacks from the in-vehicle and external networks in IoV by using the network intrusion detection dataset CICIDS2017 and the vehicle security dataset Car-Hacking. The experimental results demonstrate remarkable performance, with an F1-score of 0.965 on the CICIDS2017 dataset and an F1-score of 0.9999 on the Car-Hacking dataset. Real-time monitoring of rock stability during the mining process is critical. This paper first proposed a RIME algorithm (CCRIME) based on vertical and horizontal crossover search strategies to improve the quality of the solutions obtained by the RIME algorithm and further enhance its search capabilities. Then, by constructing a binary version of CCRIME, the key parameters of FKNN were optimized using a binary conversion method. Finally, a discrete CCRIME-based BCCRIME was developed, which uses an S-shaped function transformation approach to address the feature selection issue by converting the search result into a real number that can only be zero or one. The performance of CCRIME was examined in this study from various perspectives, utilizing 30 benchmark functions from IEEE CEC2017. Basic algorithm comparison tests and sophisticated variant algorithm comparison experiments were also carried out. In addition, this paper also used collected microseismic and blasting data for classification prediction to verify the ability of the BCCRIME-FKNN model to process real data. Learning-based classifiers are found to be vulnerable to attacks by adversarial samples. Some works suggested that ensemble classifiers tend to be more robust than single classifiers against evasion attacks. However, recent studies have shown that this is not necessarily the case under more realistic settings of black-box attacks. In this paper, we propose a novel ensemble approach to improve the robustness of classifiers against evasion attacks by using diversified feature selection and a stochastic aggregation strategy. Our proposed scheme includes three stages. Firstly, the adversarial feature selection algorithm is used to select a feature each time that can trade-offbetween classification accuracy and robustness, and add it to the feature vector bank. Secondly, each feature vector in the bank is used to train a base classifier and is added to the base classifier bank. Finally, m classifiers from the classifier bank are randomly selected for decision-making. In this way, it can cause each classifier in the base classifier bank to have good performance in terms of classification accuracy and robustness, and it also makes it difficult to estimate the gradients of the ensemble accurately. Thus, the robustness of classifiers can be improved without reducing the classification accuracy. Experiments performed using both Linear and Kernel SVMs on genuine datasets for spam filtering, malware detection, and handwritten digit recognition demonstrate that our proposed approach significantly improves the classifiers' robustness against evasion attacks. Feature selection aims to select crucial features to improve classification accuracy in machine learning and data mining. In this paper, a new binary grasshopper optimization algorithm using time-varying Gaussian transfer functions (BGOA-TVG) is proposed for feature selection. Compared with the traditional S-shaped and V-shaped transfer functions, the proposed Gaussian time-varying transfer functions have the characteristics of a fast convergence speed and a strong global search capability to convert a continuous search space to a binary one. The BGOA-TVG is tested and compared to S-shaped and V-shaped binary grasshopper optimization algorithms and five state-of-the-art swarm intelligence algorithms for feature selection. Efficient monitoring of water quality parameters (WQPs) is crucial for environmental health. Drone hyperspectral images have offered the potential for the flexible and accurate retrieval of WQPs. However, a machine learning (ML)-based multi-process strategy for WQP inversion has yet to be established. Taking a typical urban river in Guangzhou city, China, as the study area, this paper proposes a machine learning-based strategy combining spectral preprocessing and ML regression models with ground truth WQP data. Fractional order derivation (FOD) and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) methods were used to explore potential spectral information. Then, multiple methods were applied to select sensitive features. Three modeling strategies were constructed for retrieving four WQPs, including the Secchi depth (SD), turbidity (TUB), total phosphorus (TP), and permanganate index (CODMn). The highest R2s were 0.68, 0.90, 0.70, and 0.96, respectively, with corresponding RMSEs of 13.73 cm, 6.50 NTU, 0.06 mg/L, and 0.20 mg/L. Decision tree regression (DTR) was found to have the potential with the best performance for the first three WQPs, and eXtreme Gradient Boosting Regression (XGBR) for the CODMn. Moreover, tailored feature selection methods emphasize the importance of fitting processing strategies for specific parameters. This study provides an effective framework for WQP inversion that combines spectra mining and extraction based on drone hyperspectral images, supporting water quality monitoring and management in urban rivers. This article introduces an algorithm for detecting glucose and silicon levels in solution. The research focuses on addressing the critical need for accurate and efficient glucose monitoring, particularly in the context of diabetic management. Understanding and monitoring silicon levels in the body is crucial due to its significant role in various physiological processes. Silicon, while often overshadowed by other minerals, plays a vital role in bone health, collagen formation, and connective tissue integrity. Moreover, recent research suggests its potential involvement in neurological health and the prevention of certain degenerative diseases. This paper explores the energy-intensive cement industry, focusing on a plant in Greece and its mill and kiln unit. The data utilized include manipulated, non-manipulated, and uncontrolled variables. The non-manipulated variables are computed based on the machine learning (ML) models and selected by the minimum value of the normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) across nine (9) methods. In case the distribution of the data displayed in the user interface changes, the user should trigger the retrain of the AI models to ensure their accuracy and robustness. To form the objective function, the expert user should define the desired weight for each manipulated or non-manipulated variable through the user interface (UI), along with its corresponding constraints or target value. The user selects the variables involved in the objective function based on the optimization strategy, and the evaluation is based on the comparison of the optimized and the active value of the objective function. The differential evolution (DE) method optimizes the objective function that is formed by the linear combination of the selected variables. The paper presents a novel approach for predicting battery energy consumption in electric city buses (e-buses) by means of a trip-based data-driven regression model. The model was parameterized based on the data collected by running a physical experimentally validated e-bus simulation model, and it consists of powertrain and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system submodels. The main advantage of the proposed approach is its reliance on readily available trip-related data, such as travel distance, mean velocity, average passenger count, mean and standard deviation of road slope, and mean ambient temperature and solar irradiance, as opposed to the physical model, which requires high-sampling-rate driving cycle data. Additionally, the data-driven model is executed significantly faster than the physical model, thus making it suitable for large-scale city bus electrification planning or online energy consumption prediction applications. The data-driven model development began with applying feature selection techniques to identify the most relevant set of model inputs. Machine learning methods were then employed to achieve a model that effectively balances accuracy, simplicity, and interpretability. The validation results of the final eight-input quadratic-form e-bus model demonstrated its high precision and generalization, which was reflected in the R2 value of 0.981 when tested on unseen data. The rapid proliferation of new technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, virtualization, and smart devices has led to a massive annual production of over 400 zettabytes of network traffic data. As a result, it is crucial for companies to implement robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard sensitive data from intrusion, which can lead to significant financial losses. Existing intrusion detection systems (IDS) require further enhancements to reduce false positives as well as enhance overall accuracy. To minimize security risks, data analytics and machine learning can be utilized to create data-driven recommendations and decisions based on the input data. This study focuses on developing machine learning models that can identify cyber-attacks and enhance IDS system performance. This paper employed logistic regression, support vector machine, decision tree, and random forest algorithms on the UNSW-NB15 network traffic dataset, utilizing in-depth exploratory data analysis, and feature selection using correlation analysis and random sampling to compare model accuracy and effectiveness. The performance and confusion matrix results indicate that the Random Forest model is the best option for identifying cyber-attacks, with a remarkable F1 score of 97.80%, accuracy of 98.63%, and low false alarm rate of 1.36%, and thus should be considered to improve IDS system security. Federated learning (FL) is a privacy-preserving collective machine learning paradigm. Vertical federated learning (VFL) deals with the case where participants share the same sample ID space but have different feature spaces, while label information is owned by one participant. Early studies of VFL supported two participants and focused on binary-class logistic regression problems, while recent studies have put more attention on specific aspects such as communication efficiency and data security. In this paper, we propose the multi-participant multi-class vertical federated learning (MMVFL) framework for multi-class VFL problems involving multiple parties. By extending the idea of multi-view learning (MVL), MMVFL enables label sharing from its owner to other VFL participants in a privacy-preserving manner. To demonstrate the effectiveness of MMVFL, a feature selection scheme is incorporated into MMVFL to compare its performance against supervised feature selection and MVL-based approaches. The proposed framework is capable of quantifying feature importance and measuring participant contributions. It is also simple and easy to combine with other communication and security techniques. The experiment results on feature selection for classification tasks on real-world datasets show that MMVFL can effectively share label information among multiple VFL participants and match the multi-class classification performance of existing approaches. Elevators have become an integral part of modern buildings, and technological advances have enabled the monitoring of their operational status through sensor technology. In response to the development of the elevator industry and the need for practical elevator operation risk evaluation, this paper proposes an elevator risk evaluation method based on fuzzy theory and machine learning methods. The method begins by establishing an elevator operation risk evaluation index system. The traditional fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is then employed to evaluate the risk levels of the 50 elevators studied. The collected index data and labels (fuzzy comprehensive evaluation results) are used as inputs to train the support vector machine (SVM) model. To optimize the SVM model, the maximum information coefficient method, enhanced by the correlation-based feature selection (MIC-CFS) method, is employed to select features for the index input to the SVM model. The improved gray wolf algorithm (IGWO) method optimizes the SVM. Finally, the model's performance is verified using new index data. The experimental results demonstrate that introducing machine learning methods for elevator risk evaluation saves time and effort while providing good accuracy compared to the traditional expert evaluation method. The optimization of the SVM model by IGWO and feature selection by the MIC-CFS method results in a more concise SVM model that converges faster during training, exhibits better stability, and achieves higher accuracy. The feature selection problem focuses on the selection of the small, necessary, and sufficient subset of features that represent the general set of features, eliminating redundant and irrelevant information. Given the importance of the topic, in recent years there has been a boom in the study of the problem, generating a large number of related investigations. Given this, this work analyzes 161 articles published between 2019 and 2023 (20 April 2023), emphasizing the formulation of the problem and performance measures, and proposing classifications for the objective functions and evaluation metrics. Furthermore, an in-depth description and analysis of metaheuristics, benchmark datasets, and practical real-world applications are presented. The presence of malicious software (malware), for example, in Android applications (apps), has harmful or irreparable consequences to the user and/or the device. Despite the protections app stores provide to avoid malware, it keeps growing in sophistication and diffusion. In this paper, we explore the use of machine learning (ML) techniques to detect malware in Android apps. The focus is on the study of different data pre-processing, dimensionality reduction, and classification techniques, assessing the generalization ability of the learned models using public domain datasets and specifically developed apps. We find that the classifiers that achieve better performance for this task are support vector machines (SVM) and random forests (RF). We emphasize the use of feature selection (FS) techniques to reduce the data dimensionality and to identify the most relevant features in Android malware classification, leading to explainability on this task. Our approach can identify the most relevant features to classify an app as malware. Namely, we conclude that permissions play a prominent role in Android malware detection. Accurate land use and land cover (LULC) mapping is essential for scientific and decision-making purposes. The objective of this paper was to map LULC classes in the northern region of Mozambique between 2011 and 2020 based on Landsat time series processed by the Random Forest classifier in the Google Earth Engine platform. The feature selection method was used to reduce redundant data. The final maps comprised five LULC classes (non-vegetated areas, built-up areas, croplands, open evergreen and deciduous forests, and dense vegetation) with an overall accuracy ranging from 80.5% to 88.7%. LULC change detection between 2011 and 2020 revealed that non-vegetated areas had increased by 0.7%, built-up by 2.0%, and dense vegetation by 1.3%. On the other hand, open evergreen and deciduous forests had decreased by 4.1% and croplands by 0.01%. The approach used in this paper improves the current systematic mapping approach in Mozambique by minimizing the methodological gaps and reducing the temporal amplitude, thus supporting regional territorial development policies. The rising interest in the security of network infrastructure, including edge devices, the Internet of Things, and smart grids, has led to the development of numerous machine learning-based approaches that promise improvement to existing threat detection solutions. Among the popular methods to ensuring cybersecurity is the use of data science techniques and big data to analyse online threats and current trends. One important factor is that these techniques can identify trends, attacks, and events that are invisible or not easily detectable even to a network administrator. The goal of this paper is to suggest the optimal method for feature selection and to find the most suitable method to compare results between different studies in the context of imbalance datasets and threat detection in ICT. Furthermore, as part of this paper, the authors present the state of the data science discipline in the context of the ICT industry, in particular, its applications and the most frequently employed methods of data analysis. Based on these observations, the most common errors and shortcomings in adopting best practices in data analysis have been identified. The improper usage of imbalanced datasets is one of the most frequently occurring issues. This characteristic of data is an indispensable aspect in the case of the detection of infrequent events. Lithium-ion batteries play a vital role in many systems and applications, making them the most commonly used battery energy storage systems. Optimizing their usage requires accurate state-of-health (SoH) estimation, which provides insight into the performance level of the battery and improves the precision of other diagnostic measures, such as state of charge. In this paper, the classical machine learning (ML) strategies of multiple linear and polynomial regression, support vector regression (SVR), and random forest are compared for the task of battery SoH estimation. These ML strategies were selected because they represent a good compromise between light computational effort, applicability, and accuracy of results. The best results were produced using SVR, followed closely by multiple linear regression. This paper also discusses the feature selection process based on the partial charging time between different voltage intervals and shows the linear dependence of these features with capacity reduction. With the massive, worldwide, smart metering roll-out, both energy suppliers and users are starting to tap into the potential of higher resolution energy readings for accurate billing, improved demand response, improved tariffs better tuned to users and the grid, and empowering end-users to know how much their individual appliances contribute to their electricity bills via nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM). A number of NILM approaches, based on machine learning (ML), have been proposed over the years, focusing on improving the NILM model performance. However, the trustworthiness of the NILM model itself has hardly been addressed. It is important to explain the underlying model and its reasoning to understand why the model underperforms in order to satisfy user curiosity and to enable model improvement. This can be done by leveraging naturally interpretable or explainable models as well as explainability tools. This paper adopts a naturally interpretable decision tree (DT)-based approach for a NILM multiclass classifier. Furthermore, this paper leverages explainability tools to determine local and global feature importance, and design a methodology that informs feature selection for each appliance class, which can determine how well a trained model will predict an appliance on any unseen test data, minimising testing time on target datasets. We explain how one or more appliances can negatively impact classification of other appliances and predict appliance and model performance of the REFIT-data trained models on unseen data of the same house and on unseen houses on the UK-DALE dataset. Experimental results confirm that models trained with the explainability-informed local feature importance can improve toaster classification performance from 65% to 80%. Additionally, instead of one five-classifier approach incorporating all five appliances, a three-classifier approach comprising a kettle, microwave, and dishwasher and a two-classifier comprising a toaster and washing machine improves classification performance for the dishwasher from 72% to 94% and the washing machine from 56% to 80%. Human-to-human communication via the computer is mainly carried out using a keyboard or microphone. In the field of virtual reality (VR), where the most immersive experience possible is desired, the use of a keyboard contradicts this goal, while the use of a microphone is not always desirable (e.g., silent commands during task-force training) or simply not possible (e.g., if the user has hearing loss). Data gloves help to increase immersion within VR, as they correspond to our natural interaction. At the same time, they offer the possibility of accurately capturing hand shapes, such as those used in non-verbal communication (e.g., thumbs up, okay gesture, ...) and in sign language. In this paper, we present a hand-shape recognition system using Manus Prime X data gloves, including data acquisition, data preprocessing, and data classification to enable nonverbal communication within VR. We investigate the impact on accuracy and classification time of using an outlier detection and a feature selection approach in our data preprocessing. To obtain a more generalized approach, we also studied the impact of artificial data augmentation, i.e., we created new artificial data from the recorded and filtered data to augment the training data set. With our approach, 56 different hand shapes could be distinguished with an accuracy of up to 93.28%. With a reduced number of 27 hand shapes, an accuracy of up to 95.55% could be achieved. The voting meta-classifier (VL2) proved to be the most accurate, albeit slowest, classifier. A good alternative is random forest (RF), which was even able to achieve better accuracy values in a few cases and was generally somewhat faster. outlier detection was proven to be an effective approach, especially in improving the classification time. In the food industry, quality and safety issues are associated with consumers' health condition. There is a growing interest in applying various noninvasive sensorial techniques to obtain quickly quality attributes. One of them, hyperspectral/multispectral imaging technique has been extensively used for inspection of various food products. In this paper, a stacking-based ensemble prediction system has been developed for the prediction of total viable counts of microorganisms in beef fillet samples, an essential cause to meat spoilage, utilizing multispectral imaging information. As the selection of important wavelengths from the multispectral imaging system is considered as an essential stage to the prediction scheme, a features fusion approach has been also explored, by combining wavelengths extracted from various feature selection techniques. Ensemble sub-components include two advanced clustering-based neuro-fuzzy network prediction models, one utilizing information from average reflectance values, while the other one from the standard deviation of the pixels' intensity per wavelength. The performances of neurofuzzy models were compared against established regression algorithms such as multilayer perceptron, support vector machines and partial least squares. Obtained results confirmed the validity of the proposed hypothesis to utilize a combination of feature selection methods with neurofuzzy models in order to assess the microbiological quality of meat products. Feature selection metrics are commonly used in the machine learning pipeline to rank and select features before creating a predictive model. While many different metrics have been proposed for feature selection, final models are often evaluated by accuracy. In this paper, we consider the relationship between common feature selection metrics and accuracy. In particular, we focus on misorderings: cases where a feature selection metric may rank features differently than accuracy would. We analytically investigate the frequency of misordering for a variety of feature selection metrics as a function of parameters that represent how a feature partitions the data. Our analysis reveals that different metrics have systematic differences in how likely they are to misorder features which can happen over a wide range of partition parameters. We then perform an empirical evaluation with different feature selection metrics on several real-world datasets to measure misordering. Our empirical results generally match our analytical results, illustrating that misordering features happens in practice and can provide some insight into the performance of feature selection metrics. The Internet of Things (IoT) and network-enabled smart devices are crucial to the digitally interconnected society of the present day. However, the increased reliance on IoT devices increases their susceptibility to malicious activities within network traffic, posing significant challenges to cybersecurity. As a result, both system administrators and end users are negatively affected by these malevolent behaviours. Intrusion-detection systems (IDSs) are commonly deployed as a cyber attack defence mechanism to mitigate such risks. IDS plays a crucial role in identifying and preventing cyber hazards within IoT networks. However, the development of an efficient and rapid IDS system for the detection of cyber attacks remains a challenging area of research. Moreover, IDS datasets contain multiple features, so the implementation of feature selection (FS) is required to design an effective and timely IDS. The FS procedure seeks to eliminate irrelevant and redundant features from large IDS datasets, thereby improving the intrusion-detection system's overall performance. In this paper, we propose a hybrid wrapper-based feature-selection algorithm that is based on the concepts of the Cellular Automata (CA) engine and Tabu Search (TS)-based aspiration criteria. We used a Random Forest (RF) ensemble learning classifier to evaluate the fitness of the selected features. The proposed algorithm, CAT-S, was tested on the TON_IoT dataset. Breast cancer is a common cause of female mortality in developing countries. Early detection and treatment are crucial for successful outcomes. Breast cancer develops from breast cells and is considered a leading cause of death in women. This disease is classified into two subtypes: invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). The advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques have made it possible to develop more accurate and reliable models for diagnosing and treating this disease. From the literature, it is evident that the incorporation of MRI and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is helpful in breast cancer detection and prevention. In addition, the detection strategies have shown promise in identifying cancerous cells. The CNN Improvements for Breast Cancer Classification (CNNI-BCC) model helps doctors spot breast cancer using a trained deep learning neural network system to categorize breast cancer subtypes. However, they require significant computing power for imaging methods and preprocessing. Therefore, in this research, we proposed an efficient deep learning model that is capable of recognizing breast cancer in computerized mammograms of varying densities. Our research relied on three distinct modules for feature selection: the removal of low-variance features, univariate feature selection, and recursive feature elimination. The craniocaudally and medial-lateral views of mammograms are incorporated. We tested it with a large dataset of 3002 merged pictures gathered from 1501 individuals who had digital mammography performed between February 2007 and May 2015. In this paper, we applied six different categorization models for the diagnosis of breast cancer, including the random forest (RF), decision tree (DT), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), logistic regression (LR), support vector classifier (SVC), and linear support vector classifier (linear SVC). The increasing penetration of distributed generation (DG) to power distribution networks mainly induces weaknesses in the sensitivity and selectivity of protection systems. In this manner, conventional protection systems often fail to protect active distribution networks (ADN) in the case of short-circuit faults. To overcome these challenges, the accurate detection of faults in a reasonable fraction of time appears as a critical issue in distribution networks. Machine learning techniques are capable of generating efficient analytical expressions that can be strong candidates in terms of reliable and robust fault detection for several operating scenarios of ADNs. This paper proposes a deep group method of data handling (GMDH) neural network based on a non-pilot protection method for the protection of an ADN. The developed method is independent of the DG capacity and achieves accurate fault detection under load variations, disturbances, and different high-impedance faults (HIFs). To verify the improvements, a test system based on a real distribution network that includes three generators with a capacity of 6 MW is utilized. The extensive simulations of the power network are performed using DIgSILENT Power Factory and MATLAB software. The obtained results reveal that a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 3.51% for the GMDH-network-based protection system is accomplished thanks to formulation via optimized algorithms, without requiring the utilization of any feature selection techniques. The proposed method has a high-speed operation of around 20 ms for the detection of faults, while the conventional OC relay performance is in the blinding mode in the worst situations for faults with HIFs. In the era of healthcare and its related research fields, the dimensionality problem of high-dimensional data is a massive challenge as it is crucial to identify significant genes while conducting research on diseases like cancer. As a result, studying new Machine Learning (ML) techniques for raw gene expression biomedical data is an important field of research. Disease detection, sample classification, and early disease prediction are all important analyses of high-dimensional biomedical data in the field of bioinformatics. Recently, machine-learning techniques have dramatically improved the analysis of high-dimension biomedical data sets. Nonetheless, researchers' studies on biomedical data faced the challenge of vast dimensions, i.e., the vast features (genes) with a very low sample space. In this paper, two-dimensionality reduction methods, feature selection, and feature extraction are introduced with a systematic comparison of several dimension reduction techniques for the analysis of high-dimensional gene expression biomedical data. We presented a systematic review of some of the most popular nature-inspired algorithms and analyzed them. The paper is mainly focused on the original principles behind each of the algorithms and their applications for cancer classification and prediction from gene expression data. Due to increasing demands for ensuring the safety and reliability of a system, fault detection (FD) has received considerable attention in modern industries to monitor their machines. Bulk materials are transported worldwide using belt conveyors as an essential transport system. The majority of conveyor components are monitored continuously to ensure their reliability, but idlers remain a challenge to monitor due to the large number of idlers (rollers) distributed throughout the working environment. These idlers are prone to external noises or disturbances that cause a failure in the underlying system operations. The research community has begun using machine learning (ML) to detect idler's defects to assist industries in responding to failures on time. Vibration and acoustic measurements are commonly employed to monitor the condition of idlers. However, there has been no comprehensive review of FD for belt conveyor idlers. This paper presents a recent review of acoustic and vibration signal-based fault detection for belt conveyor idlers using ML models. It also discusses major steps in the approaches, such as data collection, signal processing, feature extraction and selection, and ML model construction. Additionally, the paper provides an overview of the main components of belt conveyor systems, sources of defects in idlers, and a brief introduction to ML models. This article is the third paper in a series aimed at the establishment of the authorship of Russian-language texts. This paper considers methods for determining the authorship of classical Russian literary texts, as well as fanfiction texts. The process of determining the author was first considered in the classical version of classification experiments using a closed set of authors, and experiments were also completed for a complicated modification of the problem using an open set of authors. The use of methods to identify the author of the text is justified by the conclusions about the effectiveness of the fastText and Support Vector Machine (SVM) methods with the selection of informative features discussed in our past studies. In the case of open attribution, the proposed methods are based on the author's combination of fastText and One-Class SVM as well as statistical estimates of a vector's similarity measures. The feature selection algorithm for a closed set of authors is chosen based on a comparison of five different selection methods, including the previously considered genetic algorithm as a baseline. The regularization-based algorithm (RbFS) was found to be the most efficient method, while methods based on a complete enumeration (FFS and SFS) are found to be ineffective for any set of authors. The accuracy of the RbFS and SVM methods in the case of classical literary texts averaged 83%, which outperforms other selection methods by 3 to 10% for an identical number of features, and the average accuracy of fastText was 84%. For the open attribution in cross-topic classification, the average accuracy of the method based on the combination of One-Class SVM with RbFS and fastText was 85%, and for in-group classification, it was 75 to 78%, depending on the group, which is the best result among the open attribution methods considered. The protection of users of ICT networks, including smart grids, is a challenge whose importance is constantly growing. Internet of Things (IoT) or Internet of Energy (IoE) devices, as well as network resources, store more and more information about users. Large institutions use extensive security systems requiring large and expensive resources. For smart grid users, this becomes difficult. Efficient methods are needed to take advantage of limited sets of traffic features. In this paper, machine learning techniques to verify network events for recognition of Internet threats were analyzed, intentionally using a limited number of parameters. The authors considered three machine learning techniques: Long Short-Term Memory, Isolation Forest, and Support Vector Machine. The analysis is based on two datasets. In the paper, the data preparation process is also described. Eight series of results were collected and compared with other studies. The results showed significant differences between the techniques, the size of the datasets, and the balance of the datasets. We also showed that a more accurate classification could be achieved by increasing the number of analyzed features. Unfortunately, each increase in the number of elements requires more extensive analysis. The work ends with a description of the steps that can be taken in the future to improve the operation of the models and enable the implementation of the described methods of analysis in practice. Lithium-ion batteries are a key technology for the electrification of the transport sector and the corresponding move to renewable energy. It is vital to determine the condition of lithium-ion batteries at all times to optimize their operation. Because of the various loading conditions these batteries are subjected to and the complex structure of the electrochemical systems, it is not possible to directly measure their condition, including their state of charge. Instead, battery models are used to emulate their behavior. Data-driven models have become of increasing interest because they demonstrate high levels of accuracy with less development time; however, they are highly dependent on their database. To overcome this problem, in this paper, the use of a data augmentation method to improve the training of artificial neural networks is analyzed. A linear regression model, as well as a multilayer perceptron and a convolutional neural network, are trained with different amounts of artificial data to estimate the state of charge of a battery cell. All models are tested on real data to examine the applicability of the models in a real application. The lowest test error is obtained for the convolutional neural network, with a mean absolute error of 0.27%. Early disease detection using microarray data is vital for prompt and efficient treatment. However, the intricate nature of these data and the ongoing need for more precise interpretation techniques make it a persistently active research field. Numerous gene expression datasets are publicly available, containing microarray data that reflect the activation status of thousands of genes in patients who may have a specific disease. These datasets encompass a vast number of genes, resulting in high-dimensional feature vectors that present significant challenges for human analysis. Consequently, pinpointing the genes frequently associated with a particular disease becomes a crucial task. In this paper, we present a method capable of determining the frequency with which a gene (feature) is selected for the classification of a specific disease, by incorporating feature discretization and selection techniques into a machine learning pipeline. The experimental results demonstrate high accuracy and a low false negative rate, while significantly reducing the data's dimensionality in the process. Photoacoustic (PA) imaging can be used to monitor high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapies because ablation changes the optical absorption spectrum of the tissue, and this change can be detected with PA imaging. Multi-wavelength photoacoustic (MWPA) imaging makes this change easier to detect by repeating PA imaging at multiple optical wavelengths and sampling the optical absorption spectrum more thoroughly. Real-time pixel-wise classification in MWPA imaging can assist clinicians in monitoring HIFU lesion formation and will be a crucial milestone towards full HIFU therapy automation based on artificial intelligence. In this paper, we present a deep-learning-based approach to segment HIFU lesions in MWPA images. Ex vivo bovine tissue is ablated with HIFU and imaged via MWPA imaging. The acquired MWPA images are then used to train and test a convolutional neural network (CNN) for lesion segmentation. Traditional machine learning algorithms are also trained and tested to compare with the CNN, and the results show that the performance of the CNN significantly exceeds traditional machine learning algorithms. Feature selection is conducted to reduce the number of wavelengths to facilitate real-time implementation while retaining good segmentation performance. Internet of Things (IoT) enables day-to-day objects to connect with the Internet and transmit and receive data for meaningful purposes. Recently, IoT has resulted in many revolutions in all sectors. Nonetheless, security risks to IoT networks and devices are persistently disruptive due to the growth of Internet technology. Phishing becomes a common threat to Internet users, where the attacker aims to fraudulently extract confidential data of the system or user by using websites, fictitious emails, etc. Due to the dramatic growth in IoT devices, hackers target IoT gadgets, including smart cars, security cameras, and so on, and perpetrate phishing attacks to gain control over the vulnerable device for malicious purposes. These scams have been increasing and advancing over the last few years. To resolve these problems, this paper presents a binary Hunter–prey optimization with a machine learning-based phishing attack detection (BHPO-MLPAD) method in the IoT environment. The BHPO-MLPAD technique can find phishing attacks through feature selection and classification. In the presented BHPO-MLPAD technique, the BHPO algorithm primarily chooses an optimal subset of features. The cascaded forward neural network (CFNN) model is employed for phishing attack detection. To adjust the parameter values of the CFNN model, the variable step fruit fly optimization (VFFO) algorithm is utilized. This paper aims to develop a machine-learning model based on a gradient-boosting algorithm to predict the energy-saving awareness of households using a questionnaire survey and 11-month energy data collected from more than 200 smart houses in Kitakyushu, Japan. We utilize the LightGBM (light gradient boosting machine) classifier to perform feature selection for the prediction. By using this approach, we demonstrate that the key features are the standard deviations of electricity purchased between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. and electricity consumed between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Next, by using k-means clustering we split the households based on the obtained features into three groups. Finally, by using statistical hypothesis testing, we prove that these three groups have statistically distinct levels of energy-saving awareness. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) refers to impairment of the kidneys that may worsen over time. Early detection of CKD is crucial for saving millions of lives. As a result, several studies are currently focused on developing computer-aided systems to detect CKD in its early stages. Manual screening is time-consuming and subject to personal judgment. Therefore, methods based on machine learning (ML) and automatic feature selection are used to support graders. The goal of feature selection is to identify the most relevant and informative subset of features in a given dataset. This approach helps mitigate the curse of dimensionality, reduce dimensionality, and enhance model performance. The use of natural-inspired optimization algorithms has been widely adopted to develop appropriate representations of complex problems by conducting a blackbox optimization process without explicitly formulating mathematical formulations. Recently, snake optimization algorithms have been developed to identify optimal or near-optimal solutions to difficult problems by mimicking the behavior of snakes during hunting. The objective of this paper is to develop a novel snake-optimized framework named CKD-SO for CKD data analysis. To select and classify the most suitable medical data, five machine learning algorithms are deployed, along with the snake optimization (SO) algorithm, to create an extremely accurate prediction of kidney and liver disease. The end result is a model that can detect CKD with 99.7% accuracy. These results contribute to our understanding of the medical data preparation pipeline. Microarray gene expression-based detection and classification of medical conditions have been prominent in research studies over the past few decades. However, extracting relevant data from the high-volume microarray gene expression with inherent nonlinearity and inseparable noise components raises significant challenges during data classification and disease detection. The dataset used for the research is the Lung Harvard 2 Dataset (LH2) which consists of 150 Adenocarcinoma subjects and 31 Mesothelioma subjects. The paper proposes a two-level strategy involving feature extraction and selection methods before the classification step. The feature extraction step utilizes Short Term Fourier Transform (STFT), and the feature selection step employs Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Harmonic Search (HS) metaheuristic methods. The classifiers employed are Nonlinear Regression, Gaussian Mixture Model, Softmax Discriminant, Naive Bayes, SVM (Linear), SVM (Polynomial), and SVM (RBF). Relevant attribute selection in machine learning is a key aspect aimed at simplifying the problem, reducing its dimensionality, and consequently accelerating computation. This paper proposes new algorithms for selecting relevant features and evaluating and selecting a subset of relevant objects in a dataset. Both algorithms are mainly based on the use of a fuzzy approach. The research presented here yielded preliminary results of a new approach to the problem of selecting relevant attributes and objects and selecting appropriate ranges of their values. Detailed results obtained on the Sonar dataset show the positive effects of this approach. Moreover, the observed results may suggest the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of identifying a subset of truly relevant attributes from among those identified by traditional feature selection methods. The Internet of Things (IoT) has brought significant advancements that have connected our world more closely than ever before. However, the growing number of connected devices has also increased the vulnerability of IoT networks to several types of attacks. In this paper, we present an approach for detecting attacks on IoT networks using a combination of two convolutional neural networks (CNN-CNN). The first CNN model is leveraged to select the significant features that contribute to IoT attack detection from the raw data on network traffic. The second CNN utilizes the features identified by the first CNN to build a robust detection model that accurately detects IoT attacks. The proposed approach is evaluated using the BoT IoT 2020 dataset. The results reveal that the proposed approach achieves 98.04% detection accuracy, 98.09% precision, 99.85% recall, 98.96% recall, and a 1.93% false positive rate (FPR). Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks pose a significant cybersecurity threat to software-defined networks (SDNs). This paper proposes a feature-engineering- and machine-learning-based approach to detect DDoS attacks in SDNs. First, the CSE-CIC-IDS2018 dataset was cleaned and normalized, and the optimal feature subset was found using an improved binary grey wolf optimization algorithm. Next, the optimal feature subset was trained and tested in Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Decision Tree, and XGBoost machine learning algorithms, from which the best classifier was selected for DDoS attack detection and deployed in the SDN controller. The results show that RF performs best when compared across several performance metrics (e.g., accuracy, precision, recall, F1 and AUC values). We also explore the comparison between different models and algorithms. The results show that our proposed method performed the best and can effectively detect and identify DDoS attacks in SDNs, providing a new idea and solution for the security of SDNs. The prompt and accurate diagnosis of breast lesions, including the distinction between cancer, non-cancer, and suspicious cancer, plays a crucial role in the prognosis of breast cancer. In this paper, we introduce a novel method based on feature extraction and reduction for the detection of breast cancer in mammography images. First, we extract features from multiple pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) models, and then concatenate them. The most informative features are selected based on their mutual information with the target variable. Subsequently, the selected features can be classified using a machine learning algorithm. We evaluate our approach using four different machine learning algorithms: neural network (NN), k-nearest neighbor (kNN), random forest (RF), and support vector machine (SVM). Our results demonstrate that the NN-based classifier achieves an impressive accuracy of 92% on the RSNA dataset. This dataset is newly introduced and includes two views as well as additional features like age, which contributed to the improved performance. We compare our proposed algorithm with state-of-the-art methods and demonstrate its superiority, particularly in terms of accuracy and sensitivity. For the MIAS dataset, we achieve an accuracy as high as 94.5%, and for the DDSM dataset, an accuracy of 96% is attained. Motion blur recovery is a common method in the field of remote sensing image processing that can effectively improve the accuracy of detection and recognition. Among the existing motion blur recovery methods, the algorithms based on deep learning do not rely on a priori knowledge and, thus, have better generalizability. However, the existing deep learning algorithms usually suffer from feature misalignment, resulting in a high probability of missing details or errors in the recovered images. This paper proposes an end-to-end generative adversarial network (SDD-GAN) for single-image motion deblurring to address this problem and to optimize the recovery of blurred remote sensing images. Firstly, this paper applies a feature alignment module (FAFM) in the generator to learn the offset between feature maps to adjust the position of each sample in the convolution kernel and to align the feature maps according to the context; secondly, a feature importance selection module is introduced in the generator to adaptively filter the feature maps in the spatial and channel domains, preserving reliable details in the feature maps and improving the performance of the algorithm. In addition, this paper constructs a self-constructed remote sensing dataset (RSDATA) based on the mechanism of image blurring caused by the high-speed orbital motion of satellites. Comparative experiments are conducted on self-built remote sensing datasets and public datasets as well as on real remote sensing blurred images taken by an in-orbit satellite (CX-6(02)). For permanent magnet DC motors (PMDCMs), the amplitude of the current signals gradually decreases after the motor starts. In this work, the time domain features and time-frequency-domain features extracted from several successive segments of current signals make up a feature vector, which is adopted for fault diagnosis of PMDCMs. Many redundant features will lead to a decrease in diagnosis efficiency and increase the computation cost, so it is necessary to eliminate redundant features and features that have negative effects. This paper presents a novel supervised filter feature selection method for reducing data dimension by employing the Gaussian probability density function (GPDF) and named Gaussian vote feature selection (GVFS). To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed GVFS, we compared it with the other five filter feature selection methods by utilizing the PMDCM's data. In this paper, a machine learning-based system for the prediction of the required level of respiratory support in COVID-19 patients is proposed. The level of respiratory support is divided into three classes: class 0 which refers to minimal support, class 1 which refers to non-invasive support, and class 2 which refers to invasive support. A two-stage classification system is built. First, the classification between class 0 and others is performed. Then, the classification between class 1 and class 2 is performed. The system is built using a dataset collected retrospectively from 3491 patients admitted to tertiary care hospitals at the University of Louisville Medical Center. The use of the feature selection method based on analysis of variance is demonstrated in the paper. Furthermore, a dimensionality reduction method called principal component analysis is used. XGBoost classifier achieves the best classification accuracy (84%) in the first stage. It also achieved optimal performance in the second stage, with a classification accuracy of 83%. In today's world, heart disease is the leading cause of death globally. Researchers have proposed various methods aimed at improving the accuracy and efficiency of the clinical diagnosis of heart disease. Auxiliary diagnostic systems based on machine learning are designed to learn and predict the disease status of patients from a large amount of pathological data. Practice has proved that such a system has the potential to save more lives. Therefore, this paper proposes a new framework for predicting heart disease using the smote-xgboost algorithm. First, we propose a feature selection method based on information gain, which aims to extract key features from the dataset and prevent model overfitting. Second, we use the Smote-Enn algorithm to process unbalanced data, and obtain sample data with roughly the same positive and negative categories. Finally, we test the prediction effect of Xgboost algorithm and five other baseline algorithms on sample data. The results show that our proposed method achieves the best performance in the five indicators of accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score and AUC, and the framework proposed in this paper has significant advantages in heart disease prediction. The past few years have witnessed a substantial increase in cyberattacks on Internet of Things (IoT) devices and their networks. Such attacks pose a significant threat to organizational security and user privacy. Utilizing Machine Learning (ML) in Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) has proven advantageous in countering novel zero-day attacks. However, the performance of such systems relies on several factors, one of which is prediction time. Processing speed in anomaly-based NIDS depends on a few elements, including the number of features fed to the ML model. NetFlow, a networking industry-standard protocol, offers many features that can be used to predict malicious attacks accurately. This paper examines NetFlow features and assesses their suitability in classifying network traffic. This paper proposes a novel network anomaly detection framework based on data balance and feature selection. Different from the previous binary classification of network intrusion, the network anomaly detection strategy proposed in this paper solves the problem of multiple classification of network intrusion. Regarding the common data imbalance of a network intrusion detection set, a resampling strategy generated by random sampling and Borderline SMOTE data is developed for data balance. According to the features of the intrusion detection dataset, feature selection is carried out based on information gain rate.
