This paper presents a novel approach to sentiment analysis specifically customized for predicting stock market movements, bypassing the need for external dictionaries that are often unavailable for many languages. Our methodology directly analyzes textual data, with a particular focus on context-specific sentiment words within neural network models. This specificity ensures that our sentiment analysis is both relevant and accurate in identifying trends in the stock market. We employ sophisticated mathematical modeling techniques to enhance both the precision and interpretability of our models. Through meticulous data handling and advanced machine learning methods, we leverage large datasets from Twitter and financial markets to examine the impact of social media sentiment on financial trends. We achieved an accuracy exceeding 75%, highlighting the effectiveness of our modeling approach, which we further refined into a convolutional neural network model. This paper presents the results of a study on data preprocessing and modeling for predicting corrosion in water pipelines of a steel industrial plant. The use case is a cooling circuit consisting of both direct and indirect cooling. In the direct cooling circuit, water comes into direct contact with the product, whereas in the indirect one, it does not. In this study, advanced machine learning techniques, such as extreme gradient boosting and deep neural networks, have been employed for two distinct applications. Firstly, a virtual sensor was created to estimate the corrosion rate based on influencing process variables, such as pH and temperature. Secondly, a predictive tool was designed to foresee the future evolution of the corrosion rate, considering past values of both influencing variables and the corrosion rate. The results show that the most suitable algorithm for the virtual sensor approach is the dense neural network, with MAPE values of (25 ± 4)% and (11 ± 4)% for the direct and indirect circuits, respectively. In contrast, different results are obtained for the two circuits when following the predictive tool approach. For the primary circuit, the convolutional neural network yields the best results, with MAPE = 4% on the testing set, whereas for the secondary circuit, the LSTM recurrent network shows the highest prediction accuracy, with MAPE = 9%. The rapidly evolving field of Virtual Reality (VR)-based Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) presents a significant demand for robust and accurate hand tracking solutions. Current technologies, predominantly based on single-sensing modalities, fall short in providing comprehensive information capture due to susceptibility to occlusions and environmental factors. In this paper, we introduce a novel sensor fusion approach combined with a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)-based algorithm for enhanced hand tracking in VR-based HCI. Our system employs six Leap Motion controllers, two RealSense depth cameras, and two Myo armbands to yield a multi-modal data capture. This rich data set is then processed using LSTM, ensuring the accurate real-time tracking of complex hand movements. This paper presents a method for the transparent, robust, and highly capacitive watermarking of video signals using an information mapper. The proposed architecture is based on the use of deep neural networks to embed the watermark in the luminance channel in the YUV color space. An information mapper was used to enable the transformation of a multi-bit binary signature of varying capacitance reflecting the entropy measure of the system into a watermark embedded in the signal frame. To confirm the effectiveness of the method, tests were carried out for video frames with a resolution of 256 × 256 pixels, with a watermark capacity of 4 to 16,384 bits. Forecasting algorithms have been used to support decision making in companies, and it is necessary to apply approaches that facilitate a good forecasting result. The present paper describes assessments based on a combination of different neural network models, tested to forecast steel production in the world. The main goal is to find the best machine learning model that fits the steel production data in the world to make a forecast for a nine-year period. The study is important for understanding the behavior of the models and sensitivity to hyperparameters of convolutional LSTM and GRU recurrent neural networks. The results show that for long-term prediction, the GRU model is easier to train and provides better results. Nowadays, wireless communication technology is evolving towards high data rates, a low latency, and a high throughput to meet increasingly complex business demands. Key technologies in this direction include multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). This research is based on our previous work DMCNet. In this article, we focus on studying the deep learning (DL) application of neural networks to solve the reception of single-antenna OFDM signals. Specifically, in multi-antenna scenarios, the channel model is more complex compared to single-antenna cases. By leveraging the characteristics of DL, such as automatic learning of parameters using deep neural networks, we treat the reception process of MIMO-OFDM signals as a black box and utilize neural networks to accomplish the signal reception task. Moreover, we propose a data-driven multi-pilot convolution neural network for MIMO-OFDM receivers (DMCNet). By incorporating complex convolution and complex fully connected structures, we design a receiver network to recover the transmitted signals from the received signals. We validate the accuracy and robustness of DMCNet under different channel conditions, comparing the bit error rates with different schemes. Additionally, we discuss the factors influencing various channel effects. At the same time, we also propose a model-driven scheme, DMCNet-pro, which has a higher accuracy and fewer parameters in some scenarios. The experimental results demonstrate that the DL-based reception scheme exhibits promising feasibility in terms of accuracy and interference resistance when compared to traditional approaches. COVID-19 is a transferable disease inherited from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. A total of 594 million people have been infected, and 6.4 million human beings have died due to COVID-19. The fastest way to diagnose the disease is by radiography. Deep learning has been the most popular technique for image classification during the last decade. This paper aims to examine the contributions of machine learning for the detection of COVID-19 using Deep Learning and explores the overall application of convolutional neural networks of some famous state-of-the-art deep learning pre-trained models. In this research, our objective is to explore the various image classification strategies for CXIs and the application of deep learning models for optimization and feature selection. While thunderstorms can pose severe risks to property and life, forecasting remains challenging, even at short lead times, as these often arise in meta-stable atmospheric conditions. In this paper, we examine the question of how well we could perform short-term (up to 180 min) forecasts using exclusively multi-spectral satellite images and past lighting events as data. We employ representation learning based on deep convolutional neural networks in an "end-to-end" fashion. Here, a crucial problem is handling the imbalance of the positive and negative classes appropriately in order to be able to obtain predictive results (which is not addressed by many previous machine-learning-based approaches). The resulting network outperforms previous methods based on physically based features and optical flow methods (similar to operational prediction models) and generalizes across different years. A closer examination of the classifier performance over time and under masking of input data indicates that the learned model actually draws most information from structures in the visible spectrum, with infrared imaging sustaining some classification performance during the night. Accurate flow forecasting may support responsible institutions in managing river systems and limiting damages due to high water levels. Machine-learning models are known to describe many nonlinear hydrological phenomena, but up to now, they have mainly provided a single future value with a fixed information structure. This study trains and tests multi-step deep neural networks with different inputs to forecast the water stage of two sub-alpine urbanized catchments. They prove effective for one hour ahead flood stage values and occurrences. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) perform better when only past information on the water stage is used. Long short-term memory nets (LSTMs) are more suited to exploit the data coming from the rain gauges. Predicting a set of water stages over the following hour rather than just a single future value may help concerned agencies take the most urgent actions. The automatic classification of fish species appearing in images and videos from underwater cameras is a challenging task, albeit one with a large potential impact in environment conservation, marine fauna health assessment, and fishing policy. Deep neural network models, such as convolutional neural networks, are a popular solution to image recognition problems. However, such models typically require very large datasets to train millions of model parameters. Because underwater fish image and video datasets are scarce, non-uniform, and often extremely unbalanced, deep neural networks may be inadequately trained, and undergo a much larger risk of overfitting. In this paper, we propose small convolutional neural networks as a practical engineering solution that helps tackle fish image classification. The concept of "small" refers to the number of parameters of the resulting models: smaller models are lighter to run on low-power devices, and drain fewer resources per execution. This is especially relevant for fish recognition systems that run unattended on offshore platforms, often on embedded hardware. Here, established deep neural network models would require too many computational resources. We show that even networks with little more than 12,000 parameters provide an acceptable working degree of accuracy in the classification task (almost 42% for six fish species), even when trained on small and unbalanced datasets. If the fish images come from videos, we augment the data via a low-complexity object tracking algorithm, increasing the accuracy to almost 49% for six fish species. We tested the networks with images obtained from the deployments of an experimental system in the Mediterranean sea, showing a good level of accuracy given the low quality of the dataset. First-order algorithms have long dominated the training of deep neural networks, excelling in tasks like image classification and natural language processing. Now there is a compelling opportunity to explore alternatives that could outperform current state-of-the-art results. From the estimation theory, the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) arose as a viable alternative and has shown advantages over backpropagation methods. Current computational advances offer the opportunity to review algorithms derived from the EKF, almost excluded from the training of convolutional neural networks. This article revisits an approach of the EKF with decoupling and it brings the Fully Decoupled Extended Kalman Filter (FDEKF) for training convolutional neural networks in image classification tasks. The FDEKF is a second-order algorithm with some advantages over the first-order algorithms, so it can lead to faster convergence and higher accuracy, due to a higher probability of finding the global optimum. In this research, experiments are conducted on well-known datasets that include Fashion, Sports, and Handwritten Digits images. The FDEKF shows faster convergence compared to other algorithms such as the popular Adam optimizer, the sKAdam algorithm, and the reduced extended Kalman filter. Finally, motivated by the finding of the highest accuracy of FDEKF with images of natural scenes, we show its effectiveness in another experiment focused on outdoor terrain recognition. The accurate classification of brain tumors is an important step for early intervention. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based diagnostic systems have been utilized in recent years to help automate the process and provide more objective and faster diagnosis. This work introduces an enhanced AI-based architecture for improved brain tumor classification. We introduce a hybrid architecture that integrates vision transformer (ViT) and deep neural networks to create an ensemble classifier, resulting in a more robust brain tumor classification framework. The analysis pipeline begins with preprocessing and data normalization, followed by extracting three types of MRI-derived information-rich features. The latter included higher-order texture and structural feature sets to harness the spatial interactions between image intensities, which were derived using Haralick features and local binary patterns. Additionally, local deeper features of the brain images are extracted using an optimized convolutional neural networks (CNN) architecture. Finally, ViT-derived features are also integrated due to their ability to handle dependencies across larger distances while being less sensitive to data augmentation. The extracted features are then weighted, fused, and fed to a machine learning classifier for the final classification of brain MRIs. The proposed weighted ensemble architecture has been evaluated on publicly available and locally collected brain MRIs of four classes using various metrics. This study introduces a novel approach for fault classification in bearing components utilizing raw accelerometer data. By employing various neural network models, including deep learning architectures, we bypass the traditional preprocessing and feature-extraction stages, streamlining the classification process. Utilizing the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) bearing dataset, our methodology demonstrates remarkable accuracy, particularly in deep learning networks such as the three variant convolutional neural networks (CNNs), achieving above 98% accuracy across various loading levels, establishing a new benchmark in fault-detection efficiency. Notably, data exploration through principal component analysis (PCA) and t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) provided valuable insights into feature relationships and patterns, aiding in effective fault detection. This research not only proves the efficacy of neural network classifiers in handling raw data but also opens avenues for more straightforward yet effective diagnostic methods in machinery health monitoring. Web 2.0 technology enables customers to share electronic word of mouth (eWOM) about their experiences. eWOM offers great market insights to the organization, and important for organization’s success. eWOM monitoring and management is one of the major contemporary challenges for the organization, because of high volume and frequency of the content. It is nearly impossible for an organization to manually monitor content generated by each user. In this paper, we propose sentiment analysis as an alternative method for analysis of emotions and behavioral intentions in real-time data. Sentiment analysis is performed on women’s e-clothing reviews collected from the Kaggle data repository. The dataset consists of 23,486 reviews, comprising ten feature variables. This study applied artificial neural network techniques to determine polarity of the data in terms of positive or negative. Sentiment analysis was performed by using two artificial neural networks, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), to classify the review as recommended (positive) or not recommended (negative). The proposed models have been evaluated on these performance measuring parameters: accuracy, recall, specificity, F1-score and roc-curve. The LSTM method outperformed CNN and achieved classification accuracy of 91.69%, specificity 92.81%, sensitivity 76.95%, and 56.67% F1-score. The transit method allows the detection and characterization of planetary systems by analyzing stellar light curves. Convolutional neural networks appear to offer a viable solution for automating these analyses. In this research, two 1D convolutional neural network models, which work with simulated light curves in which transit-like signals were injected, are presented. One model operates on complete light curves and estimates the orbital period, and the other one operates on phase-folded light curves and estimates the semimajor axis of the orbit and the square of the planet-to-star radius ratio. Both models were tested on real data from TESS light curves with confirmed planets to ensure that they are able to work with real data. The results obtained show that 1D CNNs are able to characterize transiting exoplanets from their host star's detrended light curve and, furthermore, reducing both the required time and computational costs compared with the current detection and characterization algorithms. Crowdsourcing is a new mode of value creation in which organizations leverage numerous Internet users to accomplish tasks. However, because these workers have different backgrounds and intentions, crowdsourcing suffers from quality concerns. In the literature, tracing the behavior of workers is preferred over other methodologies such as consensus methods and gold standard approaches. This paper proposes two novel models based on workers' behavior for task classification. These models newly benefit from time-series features and characteristics. The first model uses multiple time-series features with a machine learning classifier. The second model converts time series into images using the recurrent characteristic and applies a convolutional neural network classifier. The proposed models surpass the current state of-the-art baselines in terms of performance. At present, convolutional neural networks (CNN) have been widely used in building extraction from remote sensing imagery (RSI), but there are still some bottlenecks. On the one hand, there are so many parameters in the previous network with complex structure, which will occupy lots of memories and consume much time during training process. On the other hand, low-level features extracted by shallow layers and abstract features extracted by deep layers of artificial neural network cannot be fully fused, which leads to an inaccurate building extraction from RSI. To alleviate these disadvantages, a dense residual neural network (DR-Net) was proposed in this paper. DR-Net uses a deeplabv3+Net encoder/decoder backbone, in combination with densely connected convolution neural network (DCNN) and residual network (ResNet) structure. Compared with deeplabv3+net (containing about 41 million parameters) and BRRNet (containing about 17 million parameters), DR-Net contains about 9 million parameters; So, the number of parameters reduced a lot. The experimental results for both the WHU Building Dataset and Massachusetts Building Dataset, DR-Net show better performance in building extraction than other two state-of-the-art methods. Experiments on WHU building data set showed that Intersection over Union (IoU) increased by 2.4% and F1 score increased by 1.4%; in terms of Massachusetts Building Dataset, IoU increased by 3.8% and F1 score increased by 2.9%. The classification and recommendation system for identifying social networking site (SNS) users' interests plays a critical role in various industries, particularly advertising. Personalized advertisements help brands stand out from the clutter of online advertisements while enhancing relevance to consumers to generate favorable responses. Although most user interest classification studies have focused on textual data, the combined analysis of images and texts on user-generated posts can more precisely predict a consumer's interests. Therefore, this research classifies SNS users' interests by utilizing both texts and images. Consumers' interests were defined using the Curlie directory, and various convolutional neural network (CNN)-based models and recurrent neural network (RNN)-based models were tested for our user interest classification system. In our hybrid neural network (NN) model, CNN-based classification models were used to classify images from users' SNS postings while RNN-based classification models were used to classify textual data. The results of our extensive experiments show that the classification of users' interests performed best when using texts and images together, at 96.55%, versus texts only, 41.38%, or images only, 93.1%. Our proposed system provides insights into personalized SNS advertising research and informs marketers on making (1) interest-based recommendations, (2) ranked-order recommendations, and (3) real-time recommendations. This study compares the performance of three different neural network models to estimate daily streamflow in a watershed under a natural flow regime. Based on existing and public tools, different types of NN models were developed, namely, multi-layer perceptron, long short-term memory, and convolutional neural network. Precipitation was either considered an input variable on its own or combined with air temperature as another input variable. Different periods of accumulation, average, and/or delay were considered. The models' structures were optimized and automatically showed that CNN performed best, reaching, for example, a Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency of 0.86 and a root mean square error of 4.2 m3 s−1. This solution considers a 1D convolutional layer and a dense layer as the input and output layers, respectively. Between those layers, two 1D convolutional layers are considered. Skin detection involves identifying skin and non-skin areas in a digital image and is commonly used in various applications, such as analyzing hand gestures, tracking body parts, and facial recognition. The process of distinguishing between skin and non-skin regions in a digital image is widely used in a variety of applications, ranging from hand-gesture analysis to body-part tracking to facial recognition. Skin detection is a challenging problem that has received a lot of attention from experts and proposals from the research community in the context of intelligent systems, but the lack of common benchmarks and unified testing protocols has hampered fairness among approaches. Comparisons are very difficult. Recently, the success of deep neural networks has had a major impact on the field of image segmentation detection, resulting in various successful models to date. In this work, we survey the most recent research in this field and propose fair comparisons between approaches, using several different datasets. The main contributions of this work are (i) a comprehensive review of the literature on approaches to skin-color detection and a comparison of approaches that may help researchers and practitioners choose the best method for their application; (ii) a comprehensive list of datasets that report ground truth for skin detection; and (iii) a testing protocol for evaluating and comparing different skin-detection approaches. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of a machine learning algorithm to classify breast cancer solely by the presence of soft tissue opacities in mammograms, independent of other morphological features, using a deep convolutional neural network (dCNN). Soft tissue opacities were classified based on their radiological appearance using the ACR BI-RADS atlas. We included 1744 mammograms from 438 patients to create 7242 icons by manual labeling. The icons were sorted into three categories: "no opacities" (BI-RADS 1), "probably benign opacities" (BI-RADS 2/3) and "suspicious opacities" (BI-RADS 4/5). A dCNN was trained (70% of data), validated (20%) and finally tested (10%). A sliding window approach was applied to create colored probability maps for visual impression. Diagnostic performance of the dCNN was compared to human readout by experienced radiologists on a "real-world" dataset. The accuracies of the models on the test dataset ranged between 73.8% and 89.8%. Compared to human readout, our dCNN achieved a higher specificity (100%, 95% CI: 85.4–100%; reader 1: 86.2%, 95% CI: 67.4–95.5%; reader 2: 79.3%, 95% CI: 59.7–91.3%), and the sensitivity (84.0%, 95% CI: 63.9–95.5%) was lower than that of human readers (reader 1:88.0%, 95% CI: 67.4–95.4%; reader 2:88.0%, 95% CI: 67.7–96.8%). In conclusion, a dCNN can be used for the automatic detection as well as the standardized and observer-independent classification of soft tissue opacities in mammograms independent of the presence of microcalcifications. Motor function assessment is crucial in quantifying motor recovery following stroke. In the rehabilitation field, motor function is usually assessed using questionnaire-based assessments, which are not completely objective and require prior training for the examiners. Some research groups have reported that electroencephalography (EEG) data have the potential to be a good indicator of motor function. However, those motor function scores based on EEG data were not evaluated in a longitudinal paradigm. The ability of the motor function scores from EEG data to track the motor function changes in long-term clinical applications is still unclear. In order to investigate the feasibility of using EEG to score motor function in a longitudinal paradigm, a convolutional neural network (CNN) EEG model and a residual neural network (ResNet) EEG model were previously generated to translate EEG data into motor function scores. To validate applications in monitoring rehabilitation following stroke, the pre-established models were evaluated using an initial small sample of individuals in an active 14-week rehabilitation program. Longitudinal performances of CNN and ResNet were evaluated through comparison with standard Fugl–Meyer Assessment (FMA) scores of upper extremity collected in the assessment sessions. The results showed good accuracy and robustness with both proposed networks (average difference: 1.22 points for CNN, 1.03 points for ResNet), providing preliminary evidence for the proposed method in objective evaluation of motor function of upper extremity in long-term clinical applications. The main goal of any classification or regression task is to obtain a model that will generalize well on new, previously unseen data. Due to the recent rise of deep learning and many state-of-the-art results obtained with deep models, deep learning architectures have become one of the most used model architectures nowadays. To generalize well, a deep model needs to learn the training data well without overfitting. The latter implies a correlation of deep model optimization and regularization with generalization performance. In this work, we explore the effect of the used optimization algorithm and regularization techniques on the final generalization performance of the model with convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture widely used in the field of computer vision. Eye tracking is a useful technique for detecting autism spectrum disorder (ASD). One of the most important aspects of good learning is the ability to have atypical visual attention. The eye-tracking technique provides useful information about children's visual behaviour for early and accurate diagnosis. It works by scanning the paths of the eyes to extract a sequence of eye projection points on the image to analyse the behaviour of children with autism. In this study, three artificial-intelligence techniques were developed, namely, machine learning, deep learning, and a hybrid technique between them, for early diagnosis of autism. The first technique, neural networks [feedforward neural networks (FFNNs) and artificial neural networks (ANNs)], is based on feature classification extracted by a hybrid method between local binary pattern (LBP) and grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) algorithms. This technique achieved a high accuracy of 99.8% for FFNNs and ANNs. The second technique used a pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) model, such as GoogleNet and ResNet-18, on the basis of deep feature map extraction. The GoogleNet and ResNet-18 models achieved high performances of 93.6% and 97.6%, respectively. The third technique used the hybrid method between deep learning (GoogleNet and ResNet-18) and machine learning (SVM), called GoogleNet + SVM and ResNet-18 + SVM. This technique depends on two blocks. The first block used CNN to extract deep feature maps, whilst the second block used SVM to classify the features extracted from the first block. Simple Summary: Diseases in dairy livestock farming can lead to important economic losses. Several studies have been conducted to identify illness such as lameness by using MIR spectrometry data and relying on partial least squares discriminant analysis. However, this method suffers some limitations. In this study, random forest, support vector machine, neural network, convolutional neural network and ensemble models were used to test the feasibility of identifying cow sickness among 1909 milk sample MIR spectra from Holstein-Friesian, Jersey and Holstein-Friesian × Jersey crossbreed cows. The results obtained show that it is possible to identify a health problem with a reasonable level of accuracy using a neural network. The early detection of health problems in dairy cattle is crucial to reduce economic losses. Mid-infrared (MIR) spectrometry has been used for identifying the composition of cow milk in routine tests. As such, it is a potential tool to detect diseases at an early stage. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) has been widely applied to identify illness such as lameness by using MIR spectrometry data. However, this method suffers some limitations. In this study, a series of machine learning techniques—random forest, support vector machine, neural network (NN), convolutional neural network and ensemble models—were used to test the feasibility of identifying cow sickness from 1909 milk sample MIR spectra from Holstein-Friesian, Jersey and crossbreed cows under grazing conditions. PLS-DA was also performed to compare the results. The sick cow records had a time window of 21 days before and 7 days after the milk sample was analysed. NN showed a sensitivity of 61.74%, specificity of 97% and positive predicted value (PPV) of nearly 60%. Although the sensitivity of the PLS-DA was slightly higher than NN (65.6%), the specificity and PPV were lower (79.59% and 15.25%, respectively). Adenoid hypertrophy may lead to pediatric obstructive sleep apnea and mouth breathing. The routine screening of adenoid hypertrophy in dental practice is helpful for preventing relevant craniofacial and systemic consequences. The purpose of this study was to develop an automated assessment tool for adenoid hypertrophy based on artificial intelligence. A clinical dataset containing 581 lateral cephalograms was used to train the convolutional neural network (CNN). According to Fujioka's method for adenoid hypertrophy assessment, the regions of interest were defined with four keypoint landmarks. The adenoid ratio based on the four landmarks was used for adenoid hypertrophy assessment. Another dataset consisting of 160 patients' lateral cephalograms were used for evaluating the performance of the network. Diagnostic performance was evaluated with statistical analysis. The developed system exhibited high sensitivity (0.906, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.750–0.980), specificity (0.938, 95% CI: 0.881–0.973) and accuracy (0.919, 95% CI: 0.877–0.961) for adenoid hypertrophy assessment. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.987 (95% CI: 0.974–1.000). These results indicated the proposed assessment system is able to assess AH accurately. The CNN-incorporated system showed high accuracy and stability in the detection of adenoid hypertrophy from children' lateral cephalograms, implying the feasibility of automated adenoid hypertrophy screening utilizing a deep neural network model.
