As the main methods of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) transmission are air and physical contact, actions to mitigate and suppress its spread must be developed in order to change population dynamics and provide efficient control strategies. Here, these actions are described as a simple heuristic framework to establish public policies. Two control systems were studied: the first organized in the form of an algorithm stratified into three levels and the second as a minimization problem similar to optimal control strategies, applied to both social distancing and vaccination. The possible effects of these actions are modeled and applied to an extension of the Susceptible - Infected - Removed (SIR) compartmental model. The control system is developed, which is organized in the form of an algorithm stratified into three levels. These levels intend to represent social distancing strategies implemented by sanitary authorities around the globe, representing stronger or weaker grades of isolation intensity according to the ability of the healthcare system to cope with symptomatic individuals. The algorithm control is applied in a simulation, and the results give evidence of the effectiveness of the procedures adopted against the coronavirus. The model dynamics are analyzed and validated with simulations considering parameters obtained from epidemiological data from Brazil and Uruguay and in a more detailed way for three Brazilian states: São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. The model was validated using cumulative data on cases and deaths. For cases of death, the results were satisfactory, while for case data, the response was reasonable, considering the possibility of adding delays or variations in parameters in the model. In addition, the effective reproduction number was proposed for the cities studied in Brazil, the result being relevant because it has a qualitative behavior similar to that published by official centers. This paper also discusses the implementation and optimization of social distancing and vaccination control strategies, considering different parameters and their effects on reducing the number of cases and deaths. Since the onset of the coronavirus disease, COVID-19 pandemic, concern arose for those who might be at higher risk of a worse COVID-19 prognosis, such as those with cystic fibrosis (CF). In this context, we evaluated the features of hospitalized patients with CF due to severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) in Brazil and we also performed a systematic review including all the studies published from the beginning of the first case of COVID-19 (17 November 2019) to the date of this search (23 May 2022) which included, concomitantly, patients with CF and COVID-19 in the worldwide population. In our Brazilian data, we evaluated the period from December 2019 to March 2022, and we included 33 demographical and clinical patients' features. We classified the patients into groups: (G1) SARI due to another viral infection than severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (23; 5.4%), (G2) SARI due to an unknown etiological agent (286; 67.1%), and (G3) SARI due to SARS-CoV-2 infection (117; 27.5%). The individuals in G3 tended to be older, especially over 50 years old, and presented a higher prevalence of dyspnea, peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2) <95%, and cardiopathy. The highest prevalence for intensive care unit (ICU) treatment (52; 44.4%) and invasive mechanical ventilation (29; 24.8%) was for patients in G3. Almost half of the patients in G3 died (51; 43.6%); in contrast, none in G1 died. However, we observed 43 (15.0%) deaths in G2. In addition, 12 (4.2%) and one (0.9%) death not associated with SARI occurred, respectively, in the G2 and G3. The patients who died due to SARS-CoV-2 infection had a higher frequency of SpO2 <95% (46; 90.2%), ICU treatment (34; 66.7%), and invasive mechanical ventilation (27; 52.9%) when compared to those who recovered. The systematic review comprised a total of 31 papers published as observational studies. These studies comprised 661,386 patients in total, including children, adults, and elderly age groups. However, only 19,150 (2.9%) patients were diagnosed with CF and, from these patients, 2523 (0.4%) were diagnosed with both CF and COVID-19. It was observed that the most common outcome was the need for hospitalization (n = 322 patients with CF), and the need for oxygen support (n = 139 patients with CF). One hundred patients with CF needed intensive care units, fifty patients needed non-invasive mechanical ventilation support, and only three patients were described as receiving invasive mechanical ventilation support. Deaths were described in 38 patients with CF. Importantly, lung-transplanted patients with CF represented an increased risk of death in one publication; in accordance, another study described that lung transplantation and moderate to severe lung disease were independent risk factors for severe outcomes after SARS-CoV-2 infection. In contrast with the literature, in conclusion, Brazilian patients in G3 presented a severe phenotype, even though most of the other studies did not observe worse outcomes in patients with CF and COVID-19. Disease surveillance is used to monitor ongoing control activities, detect early outbreaks, and inform intervention priorities and policies. However, data from disease surveillance that could be used to support real-time decisionmaking remain largely underutilised. Using the Brazilian Amazon malaria surveillance dataset as a case study, in this paper we explore the potential for unsupervised anomaly detection machine learning techniques to discover signals of epidemiological interest. We found that our models were able to provide an early indication of outbreak onset, outbreak peaks, and change points in the proportion of positive malaria cases. Specifically, the sustained rise in malaria in the Brazilian Amazon in 2016 was flagged by several models. We found that no single model detected all anomalies across all health regions. Because of this, we provide the minimum number of machine learning models top-k models) to maximise the number of anomalies detected across different health regions. We discovered that the top three models that maximise the coverage of the number and types of anomalies detected across the thirteen health regions are principal component analysis, stochastic outlier selection, and the minimum covariance determinant. Anomaly detection is a potentially valuable approach to discovering patterns of epidemiological importance when confronted with a large volume of data across space and time. Our exploratory approach can be replicated for other diseases and locations to inform monitoring, timely interventions, and actions towards the goal of controlling endemic disease. Statistics show that an estimated 64 million people worldwide suffer from glaucoma. To aid in the detection of this disease, this paper presents a new public dataset containing eye fundus images that was developed for glaucoma pattern-recognition studies using deep learning (DL). The dataset, denoted Brazil Glaucoma, comprises 2000 images obtained from 1000 volunteers categorized into two groups: those with glaucoma (50%) and those without glaucoma (50%). All images were captured with a smartphone attached to a Welch Allyn panoptic direct ophthalmoscope. Further, a DL approach for the automatic detection of glaucoma was developed using the new dataset as input to a convolutional neural network ensemble model. The accuracy between positive and negative glaucoma detection, sensitivity, and specificity were calculated using five-fold cross-validation to train and refine the classification model. The results showed that the proposed method can identify glaucoma from eye fundus images with an accuracy of 90.0%. Thus, the combination of fundus images obtained using a smartphone attached to a portable panoptic ophthalmoscope and artificial intelligence algorithms yielded satisfactory results in the overall accuracy of glaucoma detection tests. Brazil has an extensive coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) area, which are of high economic and strategic importance. A Maritime Surveillance System becomes necessary to provide information and data to proper authorities, and target tracking is crucial. This paper focuses on a multitarget tracking application to a large-scale maritime surveillance system. The system is composed of a sensor network distributed over an area of interest. Due to the limited computational capabilities of nodes, the sensors send their tracking data to a central station, which is responsible for gathering and processing information obtained by the distributed components. The local Multitarget Tracking (MTT) algorithm employs a random finite set approach, which adopts a Gaussian mixture Probability Hypothesis Density (PHD) filter. The proposed data fusion scheme, utilized in the central station, consists of an additional step of prune & merge to the original GM PHD filter algorithm, which is the main contribution of this work. Through simulations, this study illustrates the performance of the proposed algorithm with a network composed of two stationary sensors providing the data. This solution yields a better tracking performance when compared to individual trackers, which is attested by the Optimal Subpattern Assignment (OSPA) metric and its location and cardinality components. The presented results illustrate the overall performance improvement attained by the proposed solution. Moreover, they also stress the need to resort to a distributed sensor network to tackle real problems related to extended targets.

In sucker-rod pumping wells, due to the lack of an early diagnosis of operating condition or sensor faults, several problems can go unnoticed. These problems can increase downtime and production loss. In these wells, the diagnosis of operation conditions is carried out through downhole dynamometer cards, via pre-established patterns, with human visual effort in the operation centers. Starting with machine learning algorithms, several papers have been published on the subject, but it is still common to have doubts concerning the difficulty level of the dynamometer card classification task and best practices for solving the problem. In the search for answers to these questions, this work carried out sixty tests with more than 50,000 dynamometer cards from 38 wells in the Mossoró, RN, Brazil. In addition, it presented test results for three algorithms (decision tree, random forest and XGBoost), three descriptors (Fourier, wavelet and card load values), as well as pipelines provided by automated machine learning. Tests with and without the tuning of hypermeters, different levels of dataset balancing and various evaluation metrics were evaluated. The research shows that it is possible to detect sensor failures from dynamometer cards. Of the results that will be presented, 75% of the tests had an accuracy above 92% and the maximum accuracy was 99.84%.

Ethanol is one of the most used fuels in Brazil, which is the second-largest producer of this biofuel in the world. The uncertainty of price direction in the future increases the risk for agents operating in this market and can affect a dependent price chain, such as food and gasoline. This paper uses the architecture of recurrent neural networks—Long short-term memory (LSTM)—to predict Brazilian ethanol spot prices for three horizon-times (12, 6 and 3 months ahead). The proposed model is compared to three benchmark algorithms: Random Forest, SVM Linear and RBF. We evaluate statistical measures such as MSE (Mean Squared Error), MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error), and accuracy to assess the algorithm robustness. Our findings suggest LSTM outperforms the other techniques in regression, considering both MSE and MAPE but SVM Linear is better to identify price trends. Concerning predictions per se, all errors increase during the pandemic period, reinforcing the challenge to identify patterns in crisis scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a big data analytics-based model developed for electric distribution utilities aiming to forecast the demand of service orders (SOs) on a spatio-temporal basis. Being fed by robust history and location data from a database provided by an energy utility that is using this innovative system, the algorithm automatically forecasts the number of SOs that will need to be executed in each location in several time steps (hourly, monthly and yearly basis). The forecasted emergency SOs demand, which is related to energy outages, are stochastically distributed, projecting the impacted consumers and its individual interruption indexes. This spatio-temporal forecasting is the main input for a web-based platform for optimal bases allocation, field team sizing and scheduling implemented in the eleven distribution utilities of Energisa group in Brazil. Over the years, electricity consumption behavior in Brazil has been analyzed due to financial and social problems. In this context, it is important to simulate energy prices of the energy efficiency auctions in the Brazilian electricity market. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method generated simulations; thus, several samples were generated with different sizes. It is possible to say that the larger the sample, the better the approximation to the original data. Then, the Kernel method and the Gaussian mixture model used to estimate the density distribution of energy price, and the MCMC method were crucial in providing approximations of the original data and clearly analyzing its impact. Next, the behavior of the data in each histogram was observed with 500, 1000, 5000 and 10,000 samples, considering only one scenario. The sample which best approximates the original data in accordance with the generated histograms is the 10,000th sample, which consistently follows the behavior of the data. Therefore, this paper presents an approach to generate samples of auction energy prices in the energy efficiency market, using the MCMC method through the Metropolis–Hastings algorithm. The algorithms for determining sugarcane harvest dates are proposed; the algorithms allow the ability to monitor large areas and are based on the publicly available Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical satellite data. Algorithm 1 uses the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) time series derived from Sentinel-2 data. Sharp and continuous decrease in the NDVI values is the main sign of sugarcane harvest. The NDVI time series allows the ability to determine most harvest dates. The best estimates of the sugarcane areas harvested per month have been obtained from March to August 2018 when cloudy pixel percentage is less than 45% of the image area. Algorithm 2 of the harvest monitoring uses the coherence time series derived from Sentinel-1 Single Look Complex (SLC) images and optical satellite data. Low coherence, demonstrating sharp growth upon the harvest completion, corresponds to the harvest period. The NDVI time series trends were used to refine the algorithm. It is supposed that the descending NDVI trend corresponds to harvest. The algorithms were used to identify the harvest dates and calculate the harvested areas of the reference sample of 574 sugarcane parcels with a total area of 3745 ha in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The harvested areas identified by visual interpretation coincide with the optical-data algorithm (algorithm 1) by 97%; the coincidence with the algorithm based on SAR and optical data (algorithm 2) is 90%. The diffuse attenuation coefficient of downwelling irradiance ( K d ) is an essential parameter for inland waters research by remotely sensing the water transparency. Lately, K d semi-analytical algorithms substituted the empirical algorithms widely employed. The purpose of this research was to reparametrize a semi-analytical algorithm to estimate K d and then apply it to a Sentinel-2 MSI time-series (2017–2019) for the Três Marias reservoir, Brazil. The results for the K d semi-analytical reparametrization achieved good accuracies, reaching mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE) for bands B2, B3 and B4 (492, 560 and 665 nm), lower than 21% when derived from in-situ remote sensing reflectance ( R r s ), while for MSI Data, a derived MAPE of 12% and 38% for B2 and B3, respectively. After the application of the algorithm to Sentinel-2 images time-series, seasonal patterns were observed in the results, showing high K d values at 492 nm during the rainy periods, mainly in the tributary mouths, possibly due to an increase in the surface runoff and inflows and outflow rates in the reservoir watershed. The main objective of this study is to assess the ability of several high-resolution satellite-based precipitation estimates to represent the Precipitation Diurnal Cycle (PDC) over Brazil during the 2014–2018 period, after the launch of the Global Precipitation Measurement satellite (GPM). The selected algorithms are the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP), The Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) and Climate Prediction Center (CPC) MORPHing technique (CMORPH). Hourly rain gauge data from different national and regional networks were used as the reference dataset after going through rigid quality control tests. All datasets were interpolated to a common 0.1° × 0.1° grid every 3 h for comparison. After a hierarchical cluster analysis, seven regions with different PDC characteristics (amplitude and phase) were selected for this study. The main results of this research could be summarized as follow: (i) Those regions where thermal heating produce deep convective clouds, the PDC is better represented by all algorithms (in term of amplitude and phase) than those regions driven by shallow convection or low-level circulation; (ii) the GSMaP suite (GSMaP-Gauge (G) and GSMaP-Motion Vector Kalman (MVK)), in general terms, outperforms the rest of the algorithms with lower bias and less dispersion. In this case, the gauge-adjusted version improves the satellite-only retrievals of the same algorithm suggesting that daily gauge-analysis is useful to reduce the bias in a sub-daily scale; (iii) IMERG suite (IMERG-Late (L) and IMERG-Final (F)) overestimates rainfall for almost all times and all the regions, while the satellite-only version provide better results than the final version; (iv) CMORPH has the better performance for a transitional regime between a coastal land-sea breeze and a continental amazonian regime. Further research should be performed to understand how shallow clouds processes and convective/stratiform classification is performed in each algorithm to improve the representativity of diurnal cycle.
