In this paper, we proposed a new method for image-based grammatical inference of deterministic, context-free L-systems (D0L systems) from a single sequence. This approach is characterized by first parsing an input image into a sequence of symbols and then, using a genetic algorithm, attempting to infer a grammar that can generate this sequence. This technique has been tested using our test suite and compared to similar algorithms, showing promising results, including solving the problem for systems with more rules than in existing approaches. Optimisation of three-dimensional (3D) underground stope layouts is a computationally complex process since it involves the modelling of many variables and constraints. As the number of variables and constraints increases to reflect the actual mining practice, the model complexity and solution time tend to increase exponentially, making the optimisation problem intractable. Metaheuristic approaches have therefore been used predominantly to solve the problem, but do not guarantee 'true' optimality. To minimise this limitation, a dual interchange algorithm (DIA) was developed by combining the strengths of two metaheuristic generic algorithms, namely the particle swarm optimisation (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA). The DIA performance was compared to that of the Mineable Shape Optimizer (MSO) on four different design scenarios. The DIA generated stope layout economic values (SLEV) for three scenarios which were 0.3%, 3.4%, and 8.3% higher than for MSO under fixed and variable stope width conditions, while MSO produced a SLEV which was 9.7% higher than the DIA for a fixed stope width. This paper investigated the flexible job-shop scheduling problem with the heat treatment process. To solve this problem, we built an unified mathematical model of the heat treatment process and machining process. Up to now, this problem has not been investigated much. Based on the features of this problem, we are intended to minimize C m a x , maximize the space utilization rate of heat treatment equipment, and minimize the total delay penalty to optimize the scheduling. By taking the dynamic process arrival under consideration, this paper proposed a set of decoding rules based on the heat treatment equipment volume and job delivery date to achieve a hybrid dynamic scheduling solution during one scheduling procedure. When the utilization rate of heat treatment equipment volume is maximized, and the job delivery date is taken under consideration, it is preferred to minimize the number of workpiece batches in the same job, and reduce the waiting time of the pending job. In combination with the improved adaptive non-dominated genetic algorithm, we worked out the solution. Furthermore, we verified the effectiveness of the proposed decoding rules and improved algorithm through algorithm comparison and calculation results. Logistics plays an important role in the field of global economy, and the storage and retrieval of tasks in a warehouse which has symmetry is the most important part of logistics. Generally, the shelves of a warehouse have a certain degree of symmetry and similarity in their structure. The storage and retrieval efficiency directly affects the efficiency of logistics. The efficiency of the traditional storage and retrieval mode has become increasingly inconsistent with the needs of the industry. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a greedy algorithm based on cost matrix to solve the path planning problem of the automatic storage and retrieval system (AS/RS). Firstly, aiming at the path planning mathematical model of AS/RS, this paper proposes the concept of cost matrix, which transforms the traditional storage and retrieval problem into the element combination problem of cost matrix. Then, a more efficient backtracking algorithm is proposed based on the exhaustive method. After analyzing the performance of the backtracking algorithm, combined with some rules, a greedy algorithm which can further improve efficiency is proposed; the convergence of the improved greedy algorithm is also proven. Finally, through simulation, the time consumption of the greedy algorithm is only 0.59% of the exhaustive method, and compared with the traditional genetic algorithm, the time consumption of the greedy algorithm is about 50% of the genetic algorithm, and it can still maintain its advantage in time consumption, which proves that the greedy algorithm based on cost matrix has a certain feasibility and practicability in solving the path planning of the automatic storage and retrieval system. There are increasing challenges for optimally distributing fresh products while adequately considering the uncertain demand of customers and maintaining the freshness of products. Taking the nature of fresh products and the characteristics of urban logistics systems into consideration, this paper proposes an improved genetic algorithm for effectively solving this problem in a computationally efficient manner. Such an algorithm can adequately account for the uncertain demand of customers to select the optimal distribution route to ensure the freshness of the product while minimizing the total distribution cost. Iterative optimization procedures are utilized for determining the optimal route by reducing the complexity of the computation in the search for an optimal solution. An illustrative example is presented that shows the improved algorithm is more effective with respect to the distribution cost, the distribution efficiency, and the distribution system's reliability in optimally distributing fresh products. In solving classification problems in the field of machine learning and pattern recognition, the pre-processing of data is particularly important. The processing of high-dimensional feature datasets increases the time and space complexity of computer processing and reduces the accuracy of classification models. Hence, the proposal of a good feature selection method is essential. This paper presents a new algorithm for solving feature selection, retaining the selection and mutation operators from traditional genetic algorithms. On the one hand, the global search capability of the algorithm is ensured by changing the population size, on the other hand, finding the optimal mutation probability for solving the feature selection problem based on different population sizes. During the iteration of the algorithm, the population size does not change, no matter how many transformations are made, and is the same as the initialized population size; this spatial invariance is physically defined as symmetry. The proposed method is compared with other algorithms and validated on different datasets. The experimental results show good performance of the algorithm, in addition to which we apply the algorithm to a practical Android software classification problem and the results also show the superiority of the algorithm. Transmission expansion planning (TEP), the determination of new transmission lines to be added to an existing power network, is a key element in power system planning. Using classical optimization to define the most suitable reinforcements is the most desirable alternative. However, the extent of the under-study problems is growing, because of the uncertainties introduced by renewable generation or electric vehicles (EVs) and the larger sizes under consideration given the trends for higher renewable shares and stronger market integration. This means that classical optimization, even using efficient techniques, such as stochastic decomposition, can have issues when solving large-sized problems. This is compounded by the fact that, in many cases, it is necessary to solve a large number of instances of a problem in order to incorporate further considerations. Thus, it can be interesting to resort to metaheuristics, which can offer quick solutions at the expense of an optimality guarantee. Metaheuristics can even be combined with classical optimization to try to extract the best of both worlds. There is a vast literature that tests individual metaheuristics on specific case studies, but wide comparisons are missing. In this paper, a genetic algorithm (GA), orthogonal crossover based differential evolution (OXDE), grey wolf optimizer (GWO), moth–flame optimization (MFO), exchange market algorithm (EMA), sine cosine algorithm (SCA) optimization and imperialistic competitive algorithm (ICA) are tested and compared. The algorithms are applied to the standard test systems of IEEE 24, and 118 buses. Results indicate that, although all metaheuristics are effective, they have diverging profiles in terms of computational time and finding optimal plans for TEP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
