Obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a condition linked to severe cardiovascular and neuropsychological consequences, characterized by recurrent episodes of partial or complete upper airway obstruction during sleep, leading to compromised ventilation, hypoxemia, and micro-arousals. Polysomnography (PSG) serves as the gold standard for confirming OSAHS, yet its extended duration, high cost, and limited availability pose significant challenges. In this paper, we employ a range of machine learning techniques, including Neural Networks, Decision Trees, Random Forests, and Extra Trees, for OSAHS diagnosis. This approach aims to achieve a diagnostic process that is not only more accessible but also more efficient. The dataset utilized in this study consists of records from 601 adults assessed between 2014 and 2016 at a specialized sleep medical center in Colombia. This research underscores the efficacy of ensemble methods, specifically Random Forests and Extra Trees, achieving an area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve of 89.2% and 89.6%, respectively. Additionally, a web application has been devised, integrating the optimal model, empowering qualified medical practitioners to make informed decisions through patient registration, an input of 18 variables, and the utilization of the Random Forests model for OSAHS screening. Electricity is crucial for daily life due to the number of activities that depend on it. To forecast future electric load, which changes over time and depends on various factors, grid operators (GOs) must create forecasting models for various time horizons with a high degree of accuracy because the results have a huge impact on their decision-making regarding, for example, the scheduling of power units to supply user consumption in the short or long term or the installation of new power plants. This has led to the exploration of multiple techniques like statistical models and Artificial Intelligence (AI), with Machine-Learning and Deep-Learning algorithms being the most popular in this latter field. This paper proposes a neural network-based model to forecast short-term load for a Colombian grid operator, considering a seven-day time horizon and using an LSTM recurrent neural network with historical load values from a region in Colombia and calendar features such as holidays and the current month corresponding to the target week. Unlike other LSTM implementations found in the literature, in this work, the LSTM cells read multiple load measurements at once, and the additional information (holidays and current month) is concatenated to the output of the LSTM. The result is used to feed a fully connected neural network to obtain the desired forecast. Due to social problems in the country, the load data presents a strange behavior, which, in principle, affects the prediction capacity of the model. Still, it is eventually able to adjust its forecasts accordingly. The regression metric MAPE measures the model performance, with the best predicted week having an error of 1.65% and the worst week having an error of 26.22%. The Caribbean is one of the world's most vulnerable regions to the projected impacts of climate change, and changes in coral reef ecosystems have been studied over the last two decades. Lately, new technology-based methods using satellites and unmanned vehicles, among others have emerged as tools to aid the governance of these ecosystems by providing managers with high-quality data for decision-making processes. This paper addresses the development of a Google Earth Engine (GEE)-based application for use in the management processes of shallow coral reef ecosystems, using images acquired with Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) known as drones, at the Old Providence McBean Lagoon National Natural Park; a Marine Protected Area (MPA) located northwest of Old Providence Island, Colombia. Image acquisition and processing, known as drone imagery, is first described for flights performed using an RTK multispectral drone at five different monitoring stations within the MPA. Then, the use of the GEE app is described and illustrated. The user executes four simple steps starting with the selection of the orthomosaics uploaded to GEE and obtaining the reef habitat classification for four categories: coral, macroalgae, sand, and rubble, at any of the five monitoring stations. Results show that these classes can be effectively mapped using different machine-learning (ML) algorithms available inside GEE, helping the manager obtain high-quality information about the reef. This remote-sensing application represents an easy-to-use tool for managers that can be integrated into modern ecosystem monitoring protocols, supporting effective reef governance within a digitized society with more demanding stakeholders. The use of sensors in different applications to improve the monitoring of a process and its variables is required as it enables information to be obtained directly from the process by ensuring its quality. This is now possible because of the advances in the fabrication of sensors and the development of equipment with a high processing capability. These elements enable the development of portable smart systems that can be used directly in the monitoring of the process and the testing of variables, which, in some cases, must evaluated by laboratory tests to ensure high-accuracy measurement results. One of these processes is taste recognition and, in general, the classification of liquids, where electronic tongues have presented some advantages compared with traditional monitoring because of the time reduction for the analysis, the possibility of online monitoring, and the use of strategies of artificial intelligence for the analysis of the data. However, although some methods and strategies have been developed, it is necessary to continue in the development of strategies that enable the results in the analysis of the data from electrochemical sensors to be improved. In this way, this paper explores the application of an electronic tongue system in the classification of liquor beverages, which was directly applied to an alcoholic beverage found in specific regions of Colombia. The system considers the use of eight commercial sensors and a data acquisition system with a machine-learning-based methodology developed for this aim. This paper presents a methodology to estimate the multidimensional poverty index using spatial data at the street block level. The data used in this study were obtained from Open Street Maps and ESA's land use cover, which are freely available sources of spatial information. The study employs five machine-learning algorithms, including Catboost, Lightboost, and Random Forest, to estimate the multidimensional poverty index with spatial granularity. The results indicate that these models achieve promising performance in predicting poverty levels in Medellín, Colombia. The results showed that the Random Forest algorithm achieved the highest performance, with an MAE of 0.07504. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of the multidimensional poverty estimate was highly correlated with the true values of the distribution. This work contributes to predicting multidimensional poverty by demonstrating the potential of machine learning algorithms to utilize accessible spatial data. By providing evidence of the feasibility of estimating poverty levels at a granular spatial level, this methodology offers a powerful tool for policymakers to make poverty social interventions with low-cost evidence. Power transformers' reliability is of the highest importance for distribution networks. A possible failure of them can interrupt the supply to consumers, which will cause inconvenience to them and loss of revenue for electricity companies. Additionally, depending on the type of damage, the recovery time can vary and intensify the problems of consumers. This paper estimates the maintenance required for distribution transformers using Artificial Intelligence (AI). This way the condition of the equipment that is currently in use is evaluated and the time that maintenance should be performed is known. Because actions are only carried out when necessary, this strategy promises cost reductions over routine or time-based preventative maintenance. The suggested methodology uses a classification predictive model to identify with high accuracy the number of transformers that are vulnerable to failure. This was confirmed by training, testing, and validating it with actual data in Colombia's Cauca Department. It is clear from this experimental method that Machine Learning (ML) methods for early detection of technical issues can help distribution system operators increase the number of selected transformers for predictive maintenance. Additionally, these methods can also be beneficial for customers' satisfaction with the performance of distribution transformers, which would enhance the highly reliable performance of such transformers. According to the prediction for 2021, 852 transformers will malfunction, 820 of which will be in rural Cauca, which is consistent with previous failure statistics. Grassland pastures are crucial for the global food supply through their milk and meat production; hence, forage species monitoring is essential for cattle feed. Therefore, knowledge of pasture above-ground canopy features help understand the crop status. This paper finds how to construct machine learning models to predict above-ground canopy features in Brachiaria pasture from ground truth data (GTD) and remote sensing at larger (satellite data on the cloud) and smaller (unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)) scales. First, we used above-ground biomass (AGB) data obtained from Brachiaria to evaluate the relationship between vegetation indices (VIs) with the dry matter (DM). Next, the performance of machine learning algorithms was used for predicting AGB based on VIs obtained from ground truth and satellite and UAV imagery. When comparing more than twenty-five machine learning models using an Auto Machine Learning Python API, the results show that the best algorithms were the Huber with R2 = 0.60, Linear with R2 = 0.54, and Extra Trees with R2 = 0.45 to large scales using satellite. On the other hand, short-scale best regressions are K Neighbors with an R2 of 0.76, Extra Trees with an R2 of 0.75, and Bayesian Ridge with an R2 of 0.70, demonstrating a high potential to predict AGB and DM. This study is the first prediction model approach that assesses the rotational grazing system and pasture above-ground canopy features to predict the quality and quantity of cattle feed to support pasture management in Colombia. This study investigates the application of machine learning techniques for cyberattack prevention in Internet of Things (IoT) systems, focusing on the specific context of cyberattacks in Colombia. The research presents a comparative perspective on cyberattacks in Colombia, aiming to identify the most effective machine learning methods for mitigating and preventing such threats. The study evaluates the performance of logistic regression, naïve Bayes, perceptron, and k-nearest neighbors algorithms in the context of cyberattack prevention. Remote sensing technologies have been successfully used for deforestation monitoring, and with the wide availability of satellite products from different platforms, forest monitoring applications have grown in recent years. The observed potential in these technologies motivates the development of forest mapping and monitoring tools that could also be used for neighboring applications like agriculture or land-use mapping. A literature review confirmed the research areas of interest in deforestation monitoring using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and data fusion techniques, which guided the formulation of the method developed in this article consisting of a data preprocessing workflow for SAR (Sentinel-1) and multispectral (Sentinel-2) data and a procedure for the selection of a machine learning model for forest/nonforest segmentation evaluated in different combinations of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 bands. The selected model is a random forest algorithm that uses C-band SAR dual-polarimetric bands, intensity features, and vegetation indices derived from optical/multispectral data. The selected random forest classifier's balanced accuracies were 79–81%, and the f1-scores were 0.72–0.76 for the validation set. The results allow the obtention of yearly forest/nonforest and forest loss maps in the study area of Bajo Cauca in Colombia, a region with a documented high deforestation rate. In Colombia, the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed on 6 March 2020. On 13 March 2023, Colombia registered 6,360,780 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, representing 12.18% of the total population. The National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) in Colombia published in 2020 a COVID-19 vulnerability index, which estimates the vulnerability (per city block) of being infected with COVID-19. Unfortunately, DANE did not consider multiple factors that could increase the risk of COVID-19 (in addition to demographic and health), such as environmental and mobility data (found in the related literature). The proposed multidimensional index considers variables of different types (unemployment rate, gross domestic product, citizens' mobility, vaccination data, and climatological and spatial information) in which the incidence of COVID-19 is calculated and compared with the incidence of the COVID-19 vulnerability index provided by DANE. The collection, data preparation, modeling, and evaluation phases of the Cross-Industry Standard Process for Data Mining methodology (CRISP-DM) were considered for constructing the index. The multidimensional index was evaluated using multiple machine learning models to calculate the incidence of COVID-19 cases in the main cities of Colombia. The results showed that the best-performing model to predict the incidence of COVID-19 in Colombia is the Extra Trees Regressor algorithm, obtaining an R-squared of 0.829. This work is the first step toward a multidimensional analysis of COVID-19 risk factors, which has the potential to support decision making in public health programs. This paper presents an integrated model for seismic events detection in Colombia using machine learning techniques. Machine learning is used to identify P-wave windows in historic records and hence detect seismic events. The proposed model has five modules that group the basic detection system procedures: the seeking, gathering, and storage seismic data module, the reading of seismic records module, the analysis of seismological stations module, the sample selection module, and the classification process module. An explanation of each module is given in conjunction with practical recommendations for its implementation. Big data and artificial intelligence are currently two of the most important and trending pieces for innovation and predictive analytics in healthcare, leading the digital healthcare transformation. Keralty organization is already working on developing an intelligent big data analytic platform based on machine learning and data integration principles. We discuss how this platform is the new pillar for the organization to improve population health management, value-based care, and new upcoming challenges in healthcare. The benefits of using this new data platform for community and population health include better healthcare outcomes, improvement of clinical operations, reducing costs of care, and generation of accurate medical information. Several machine learning algorithms implemented by the authors can use the large standardized datasets integrated into the platform to improve the effectiveness of public health interventions, improving diagnosis, and clinical decision support. The data integrated into the platform come from Electronic Health Records (EHR), Hospital Information Systems (HIS), Radiology Information Systems (RIS), and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), as well as data generated by public health platforms, mobile data, social media, and clinical web portals. This massive volume of data is integrated using big data techniques for storage, retrieval, processing, and transformation. This paper presents the design of a digital health platform in a healthcare organization in Colombia to integrate operational, clinical, and business data repositories with advanced analytics to improve the decision-making process for population health management. This paper presents a general framework for modeling the growth of three important variables for cities: population distribution, binary urban footprint, and urban footprint in color. The framework models the population distribution as a spatiotemporal regression problem using machine learning, and it obtains the binary urban footprint from the population distribution through a binary classifier plus a temporal correction for existing urban regions. The framework estimates the urban footprint in color from its previous value, as well as from past and current values of the binary urban footprint using a semantic inpainting algorithm. By combining this framework with free data from the Landsat archive and the Global Human Settlement Layer framework, interested users can get approximate growth predictions of any city in the world. These predictions can be improved with the inclusion in the framework of additional spatially distributed input variables over time subject to availability. Unlike widely used growth models based on cellular automata, there are two main advantages of using the proposed machine learning-based framework. Firstly, it does not require to define rules a priori because the model learns the dynamics of growth directly from the historical data. Secondly, it is very easy to train new machine learning models using different explanatory input variables to assess their impact. As a proof of concept, we tested the framework in Valledupar and Rionegro, two Latin American cities located in Colombia with different geomorphological characteristics, and found that the model predictions were in close agreement with the ground-truth based on performance metrics, such as the root-mean-square error, zero-mean normalized cross-correlation, Pearson's correlation coefficient for continuous variables, and a few others for discrete variables such as the intersection over union, accuracy, and the f 1 metric. In summary, our framework for modeling urban growth is flexible, allows sensitivity analyses, and can help policymakers worldwide to assess different what-if scenarios during the planning cycle of sustainable and resilient cities. Hydrologic modeling is trending toward larger spatial and temporal domains, higher resolutions, and less extensive local calibration and validation. Thorough calibration and validation are difficult because the quantity of observations needed for such scales do not exist or is inaccessible to modelers. We present the Stream Analysis for Bias Estimation and Reduction (SABER) method for bias correction targeting large models. SABER is intended for model consumers to apply to a subset of a larger domain at gauged and ungauged locations and address issues with data size and availability. SABER extends frequency-matching postprocessing techniques using flow duration curves (FDC) at gauged subbasins to be applied at ungauged subbasins using clustering and spatial analysis. SABER uses a "scalar" FDC (SFDC), a ratio of simulated to observed FDC, to characterize biases spatially, temporally, and for varying exceedance probabilities to make corrections at ungauged subbasins. Biased flows at ungauged locations are corrected with the scalar values from the SFDC. Corrected flows are refined to fit a Gumbel Type 1 distribution. We present the theory, procedure, and validation study in Colombia. SABER reduces biases and improves composite metrics, including Nash Sutcliffe and Kling Gupta Efficiency. Sentiment analysis is a relevant area in the natural language processing context–(NLP) that allows extracting opinions about different topics such as customer service and political elections. Sentiment analysis is usually carried out through supervised learning approaches and using labeled data. However, obtaining such labels is generally expensive or even infeasible. The above problems can be faced by using models based on self-supervised learning, which aims to deal with various machine learning paradigms in the absence of labels. Accordingly, we propose a self-supervised approach for sentiment analysis in Spanish that comprises a lexicon-based method and a supervised classifier. We test our proposal over three corpora; the first two are labeled datasets, namely, CorpusCine and PaperReviews. Further, we use an unlabeled corpus conformed by news related to the Colombian conflict to understand the university journalistic narrative of the war in Colombia. Obtained results demonstrate that our proposal can deal with sentiment analysis settings in scenarios with unlabeled corpus; in fact, it acquires competitive performance compared with state-of-the-art techniques in partially-labeled datasets. Agricultural activity has always been threatened by the presence of pests and diseases that prevent the proper development of crops and negatively affect the economy of farmers. One of these pests is Coffee Leaf Rust (CLR), which is a fungal epidemic disease that affects coffee trees and causes massive defoliation. As an example, this disease has been affecting coffee trees in Colombia (the third largest producer of coffee worldwide) since the 1980s, leading to devastating losses between 70% and 80% of the harvest. Failure to detect pathogens at an early stage can result in infestations that cause massive destruction of plantations and significantly damage the commercial value of the products. The most common way to detect this disease is by walking through the crop and performing a human visual inspection. As a result of this problem, different research studies have proven that technological methods can help to identify these pathogens. Our contribution is an experiment that includes a CLR development stage diagnostic model in the Coffea arabica, Caturra variety, scale crop through the technological integration of remote sensing (through drone capable multispectral cameras), wireless sensor networks (multisensor approach), and Deep Learning (DL) techniques. Our diagnostic model achieved an F1-score of 0.775. The analysis of the results revealed a p-value of 0.231, which indicated that the difference between the disease diagnosis made employing a visual inspection and through the proposed technological integration was not statistically significant. This article contains methods, results, and analysis agreed for the development of an application based on the internet of things and making use of machine learning techniques that serves as a support for the identification of the saline wedge in the Magdalena River estuary, Colombia. As a result of this investigation, the process of identifying the most suitable telecommunications architecture to be installed in the estuary is shown, as well as the characteristics of the software developed called SISME (Estuary Monitoring System), and the results obtained after the implementation of prediction techniques based on time series. This implementation supports the maritime security of the port of Barranquilla since it can support decision-making related to the estuary. Early detection of grapevine viral diseases is critical for early interventions in order to prevent the disease from spreading to the entire vineyard. Hyperspectral remote sensing can potentially detect and quantify viral diseases in a nondestructive manner. This study utilized hyperspectral imagery at the plant level to identify and classify grapevines inoculated with the newly discovered DNA virus grapevine vein-clearing virus (GVCV) at the early asymptomatic stages. An experiment was set up at a test site at South Farm Research Center, Columbia, MO, USA (38.92 N, −92.28 W), with two grapevine groups, namely healthy and GVCV-infected, while other conditions were controlled. Images of each vine were captured by a SPECIM IQ 400–1000 nm hyperspectral sensor (Oulu, Finland). Hyperspectral images were calibrated and preprocessed to retain only grapevine pixels. A statistical approach was employed to discriminate two reflectance spectra patterns between healthy and GVCV vines. Disease-centric vegetation indices (VIs) were established and explored in terms of their importance to the classification power. Pixel-wise (spectral features) classification was performed in parallel with image-wise (joint spatial–spectral features) classification within a framework involving deep learning architectures and traditional machine learning. The results showed that: (1) the discriminative wavelength regions included the 900–940 nm range in the near-infrared (NIR) region in vines 30 days after sowing (DAS) and the entire visual (VIS) region of 400–700 nm in vines 90 DAS; (2) the normalized pheophytization index (NPQI), fluorescence ratio index 1 (FRI1), plant senescence reflectance index (PSRI), anthocyanin index (AntGitelson), and water stress and canopy temperature (WSCT) measures were the most discriminative indices; (3) the support vector machine (SVM) was effective in VI-wise classification with smaller feature spaces, while the RF classifier performed better in pixel-wise and image-wise classification with larger feature spaces; and (4) the automated 3D convolutional neural network (3D-CNN) feature extractor provided promising results over the 2D convolutional neural network (2D-CNN) in learning features from hyperspectral data cubes with a limited number of samples. This study proposes a climate service named Smart Climate Hydropower Tool (SCHT) and designed as a hybrid forecast system for supporting decision-making in a context of hydropower production. SCHT is technically designed to make use of information from state-of-art seasonal forecasts provided by the Copernicus Climate Data Store (CDS) combined with a range of different machine learning algorithms to perform the seasonal forecast of the accumulated inflow discharges to the reservoir of hydropower plants. The machine learning algorithms considered include support vector regression, Gaussian processes, long short-term memory, non-linear autoregressive neural networks with exogenous inputs, and a deep-learning neural networks model. Each machine learning model is trained over past decades datasets of recorded data, and forecast performances are validated and evaluated using separate test sets with reference to the historical average of discharge values and simpler multiparametric regressions. Final results are presented to the users through a user-friendly web interface developed from a tied connection with end-users in an effective co-design process. Methods are tested for forecasting the accumulated seasonal river discharges up to six months in advance for two catchments in Colombia, South America. Results indicate that the machine learning algorithms that make use of a complex and/or recurrent architecture can better simulate the temporal dynamic behaviour of the accumulated river discharge inflow to both case study reservoirs, thus rendering SCHT a useful tool in providing information for water resource managers in better planning the allocation of water resources for different users and for hydropower plant managers when negotiating power purchase contracts in competitive energy markets. Leishmaniasis is a parasitic morbid/fatal disease caused by Leishmania protozoa. Twelve million people worldwide are appraised to be currently infected, including ca. two million infections each year, and 350 million people in 88 countries are at risk of becoming infected. In Colombia, cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a public health problem in some tropical areas. Therapeutics is based on traditional antileishmanial drugs, but this practice has several drawbacks for patients. Thus, the search for new antileishmanial agents is a serious need, but the lack of adequately funded research programs on drug discovery has hampered its progress. Some Colombian researchers have conducted different research projects focused on the assessment of the antileishmanial activity of naturally occurring and synthetic compounds against promastigotes and/or amastigotes. Results of such studies have separately demonstrated important hits and reasonable potential, but a holistic view of them is lacking. Hence, we present the outcome from a systematic review of the literature (under PRISMA guidelines) on those Colombian studies investigating antileishmanials during the last thirty-two years. In order to combine the general efforts aiming at finding a lead against Leishmania panamensis (one of the most studied and incident parasites in Colombia causing CL) and to recognize structural features of representative compounds, fingerprint-based analyses using conventional machine learning algorithms and clustering methods are shown. Abstraction from such a meta-description led to describe some function-determining molecular features and simplify the clustering of plausible isofunctional hits. This systematic review indicated that the Colombian efforts for the antileishmanials discovery are increasingly intensified, though improvements in the followed pathways must be definitively pursued.
