This document is a summary of a special issue on advanced machine learning and deep learning techniques for remote sensing. The issue includes 16 research papers that cover a range of topics, including hyperspectral image classification, moving point target detection, radar echo extrapolation, and remote sensing object detection. Each paper introduces a novel approach or model and provides extensive testing and evaluation to demonstrate its effectiveness. Coral reefs are an essential source of marine biodiversity, but they are declining at an alarming rate under the combined effects of global change and human pressure. A precise mapping of coral reef habitat with high spatial and time resolutions has become a necessary step for monitoring their health and evolution. This mapping can be achieved remotely thanks to satellite imagery coupled with machine-learning algorithms. In this paper, we review the different satellites used in recent literature, as well as the most common and efficient machine-learning methods. To account for the recent explosion of published research on coral reel mapping, we especially focus on the papers published between 2018 and 2020. Our review study indicates that object-based methods provide more accurate results than pixel-based ones, and that the most accurate methods are Support Vector Machine and Random Forest. We emphasize that the satellites with the highest spatial resolution provide the best images for benthic habitat mapping. We also highlight that preprocessing steps (water column correction, sunglint removal, etc.) and additional inputs (bathymetry data, aerial photographs, etc.) can significantly improve the mapping accuracy. Water constitutes an indispensable resource crucial for the sustenance of humanity, as it plays an integral role in various sectors such as agriculture, industrial processes, and domestic consumption. Even though water covers 71% of the global land surface, governments have been grappling with the challenge of ensuring the provision of safe water for domestic use. A contributing factor to this situation is the persistent contamination of available water sources rendering them unfit for human consumption. A common contaminant, pesticides are not frequently tested for despite their serious effects on biodiversity. Pesticide determination in water quality assessment is a challenging task because the procedures involved in the extraction and detection are complex. This reduces their popularity in many monitoring campaigns despite their harmful effects. If the existing methods of pesticide analysis are adapted by leveraging new technologies, then information concerning their presence in water ecosystems can be exposed. Furthermore, beyond the advantages conferred by the integration of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning (ML), and big data analytics, a notable outcome is the attainment of a heightened degree of granularity in the information of water ecosystems. This paper discusses methods of pesticide detection in water, emphasizing the possible use of electrochemical sensors, biosensors, and paper-based sensors in wireless sensing. It also explores the application of WSNs in water, the IoT, computing models, ML, and big data analytics, and their potential for integration as technologies useful for pesticide monitoring in water. Satellite remote sensing plays a significant role in the detection of smoke from forest fires. However, existing methods for detecting smoke from forest fires based on remote sensing images rely solely on the information provided by the images, overlooking the positional information and brightness temperature of the fire spots in forest fires. This oversight significantly increases the probability of misjudging smoke plumes. This paper proposes a smoke detection model, Forest Smoke-Fire Net (FSF Net), which integrates wildfire smoke images with the dynamic brightness temperature information of the region. The MODIS_Smoke_FPT dataset was constructed using a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), the meteorological information at the site of the fire, and elevation data to determine the location of smoke and the brightness temperature threshold for wildfires. Deep learning and machine learning models were trained separately using the image data and fire spot area data provided by the dataset. The performance of the deep learning model was evaluated using metric M A P , while the regression performance of machine learning was assessed with Root Mean Square Error ( R M S E ) and Mean Absolute Error ( M A E ). The selected machine learning and deep learning models were organically integrated. The results show that the Mask_RCNN_ResNet50_FPN and XGR models performed best among the deep learning and machine learning models, respectively. Combining the two models achieved good smoke detection results ( P r e c i s i o n smoke = 89.12 % ). Compared with wildfire smoke detection models that solely use image recognition, the model proposed in this paper demonstrates stronger applicability in improving the precision of smoke detection, thereby providing beneficial support for the timely detection of forest fires and applications of remote sensing. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is generating new horizons in one of the biggest challenges in the world's society—poverty. Our goal is to investigate utilities of AI in poverty prediction via finding answers to the following research questions: (1) How many papers on utilities of AI in poverty prediction were published up until March, 2022? (2) Which approach to poverty was applied when AI was used for poverty prediction? (3) Which AI methods were applied for predicting poverty? (4) What data were used for poverty prediction via AI? (5) What are the advantages and disadvantages of the created AI models for poverty prediction? In order to answer these questions, we selected twenty-two papers using appropriate keywords and the exclusion criteria and analyzed their content. The selection process identified that, since 2016, publications on AI applications in poverty prediction began. Results of our research illustrate that, during this relatively short period, the application of AI in predicting poverty experienced a significant progress. Overall, fifty-seven AI methods were applied during the analyzed span, among which the most popular one was random forest. It was revealed that with the adoption of AI tools, the process of poverty prediction has become, from one side, quicker and more accurate and, from another side, more advanced due to the creation and possibility of using different datasets. One of the ideas behind vegetation monitoring is the ability to identify different vegetation units, such as species, communities, habitats, or vegetation types. Remote sensing data allow for obtaining such information remotely, which is especially valuable in areas that are difficult to explore (such as mountains or wetlands). At the same time, such techniques allow for limiting field research, which is particularly important in this context. Remote sensing has been utilized for vegetation inventories for many decades, using airborne and spaceborne platforms. Developing newer tools, algorithms and sensors is conducive to more new applications in the vegetation identification field. The Special Issue "Remote Sensing Applications in Vegetation Classification" is an overview of the applications of remote sensing data with different resolutions for the identification of vegetation at different levels of detail. In 14 research papers, the most frequent different types of crops were analysed. In three cases, the authors recognised different types of grasslands, whereas trees were the object of the studies in two papers. The most commonly used sensors were Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2; however, to a lesser extent, MODIS, airborne hyperspectral and multispectral data, as well as LiDAR products, were also utilised. There were articles that tested and compared different combinations of datasets, different terms of data acquisition, or different classifiers in order to achieve the highest classification accuracy. These accuracies were assessed quite satisfactorily in each publication; the overall accuracy (OA) for the best result varied from 72% to 98%. In all of the research papers, at least one of the two commonly used machine learning algorithms, random forest (RF) and support vector machines (SVM), was applied. Additionally, one paper presented software ARTMO's machine-learning classification algorithms toolbox, which allows for the testing of 13 different classifiers. The studies published in this Special Issue can be used by the vegetation research teams and practitioners to conduct deeper analysis via the utilization of the proposed solutions. Snow detection is imperative in remote sensing for various applications, including climate change monitoring, water resources management, and disaster warning. Recognizing the limitations of current deep learning algorithms in cloud and snow boundary segmentation, as well as issues like detail snow information loss and mountainous snow omission, this paper presents a novel snow detection network based on Swin-Transformer and U-shaped dual-branch encoder structure with geographic information (SD-GeoSTUNet), aiming to address the above issues. Initially, the SD-GeoSTUNet incorporates the CNN branch and Swin-Transformer branch to extract features in parallel and the Feature Aggregation Module (FAM) is designed to facilitate the detail feature aggregation via two branches. Simultaneously, an Edge-enhanced Convolution (EeConv) is introduced to promote snow boundary contour extraction in the CNN branch. In particular, auxiliary geographic information, including altitude, longitude, latitude, slope, and aspect, is encoded in the Swin-Transformer branch to enhance snow detection in mountainous regions. Experiments conducted on Levir_CS, a large-scale cloud and snow dataset originating from Gaofen-1, demonstrate that SD-GeoSTUNet achieves optimal performance with the values of 78.08%, 85.07%, and 92.89% for I o U _ s , F 1 _ s , and M P A , respectively, leading to superior cloud and snow boundary segmentation and thin cloud and snow detection. Further, ablation experiments reveal that integrating slope and aspect information effectively alleviates the omission of snow detection in mountainous areas and significantly exhibits the best vision under complex terrain. The proposed model can be used for remote sensing data with geographic information to achieve more accurate snow extraction, which is conducive to promoting the research of hydrology and agriculture with different geospatial characteristics. Rapid urbanization and climate change exacerbate the urban heat island effect, increasing the vulnerability of urban residents to extreme heat. Although many studies have assessed urban heat vulnerability, there is a significant lack of standardized criteria and references for selecting indicators, building models, and validating those models. Many existing approaches do not adequately meet urban planning needs due to insufficient spatial resolution, temporal coverage, and accuracy. To address this gap, this paper introduces the U-HEAT framework, a conceptual model for analyzing urban heat vulnerability. The primary objective is to outline the theoretical foundations and potential applications of U-HEAT, emphasizing its conceptual nature. This framework integrates machine learning (ML) with remote sensing (RS) to identify urban heat vulnerability at both long-term and detailed levels. It combines retrospective and forward-looking mapping for continuous monitoring and assessment, providing essential data for developing comprehensive strategies. With its active learning capacity, U-HEAT enables model refinement and the evaluation of policy impacts. The framework presented in this paper offers a standardized and sustainable approach, aiming to enhance practical analysis tools. It highlights the importance of interdisciplinary research in bolstering urban resilience and stresses the need for sustainable urban ecosystems capable of addressing the complex challenges posed by climate change and increased urban heat. In view of the ecological threat posed by cyanobacteria blooms in Taihu Lake (China), this paper presents a study on the area of cyanobacteria extent based on MODIS data using the quantum particle swarm optimization–random forest (QPSO-RF) machine learning algorithm. This paper selects multiple remote sensing input indices that can represent the characteristics of the primary underlying type in Taihu Lake. The proposed method performs best, with an F1 score of 0.91–0.98. Based on this method, the spatio-temporal variation of cyanobacteria blooms in the Taihu Lake complex was analyzed. During 2010–2022, the average area of cyanobacteria blooms in Taihu Lake increased slightly. Severe-scale cyanobacteria blooms occurred in 2015–2019. Cyanobacteria blooms were normally concentrated from May to November. However, the most prolonged extended duration occurred in 2017, lasting for eight months. Spatially, cyanobacteria blooms were mainly identified in the northwestern part of Taihu Lake, with an average occurrence frequency of about 10.0%. The cyanobacteria blooms often began to grow in the northwestern part of the lake and then spread to the Center of the Lake, and also dissipated earliest in the northwestern part of the lake. Mussel platforms are big floating structures made of wood (normally about 20 m × 20 m or even a bit larger) that are used for aquaculture. They are used for supporting the growth of mussels in suitable marine waters. These structures are very common near the Galician coastline. For their maintenance and tracking, it is quite convenient to be able to produce a periodic census of these structures, including their current count and position. Images from Earth observation satellites are, a priori, a convenient choice for this purpose. This paper describes an application capable of automatically supporting such a census using optical images taken at different wavelength intervals. The images are captured by the two Sentinel 2 satellites (Sentinel 2A and Sentinel 2B, both from the Copernicus Project). The Copernicus satellites are run by the European Space Agency, and the produced images are freely distributed on the Internet. Sentinel 2 images include thirteen frequency bands and are updated every five days. In our proposal, remote-sensing normalized (differential) indexes are used, and machine-learning techniques are applied to multiband data. Different methods are described and tested. The results obtained in this paper are satisfactory and prove the approach is suitable for the intended purpose. In conclusion, it is worth noting that artificial neural networks turn out to be particularly good for this problem, even with a moderate level of complexity in their design. Forest biomass estimation is undoubtedly one of the most pressing research subjects at present. Combining multi-source remote sensing information can give full play to the advantages of different remote sensing technologies, providing more comprehensive and rich information for aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation research. Based on Landsat 8, Sentinel-2A, and ALOS2 PALSAR data, this paper takes the artificial coniferous forests in the Saihanba Forest of Hebei Province as the object of study, fully explores and establishes remote sensing factors and information related to forest structure, gives full play to the advantages of spectral signals in detecting the horizontal structure and multi-dimensional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in detecting the vertical structure, and combines environmental factors to carry out multivariate synergistic methods of estimating the AGB. This paper uses three variable selection methods (Pearson correlation coefficient, random forest significance, and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)) to establish the variable sets, combining them with three typical non-parametric models to estimate AGB, namely, random forest (RF), support vector regression (SVR), and artificial neural network (ANN), to analyze the effect of forest structure on biomass estimation, explore the suitable AGB of artificial coniferous forests estimation of machine learning models, and develop the method of quantifying saturation value of the combined variables. The results show that the horizontal structure is more capable of explaining the AGB compared to the vertical structure information, and that combining the multi-structure information can improve the model results and the saturation value to a great extent. In this study, different sets of variables can produce relatively superior results in different models. The variable set selected using LASSO gives the best results in the SVR model, with an R 2 values of 0.9998 and 0.8792 for the training and the test set, respectively, and the highest saturation value obtained is 185.73 t/ha, which is beyond the range of the measured data. The problem of saturation in biomass estimation in boreal medium- and high-density forests was overcome to a certain extent, and the AGB of the Saihanba area was better estimated. In the current context of carbon neutrality, afforestation is an effective means of absorbing carbon dioxide. Stock can be used not only as an economic value index of forest wood resources but also as an important index of biomass and carbon storage estimation in forest emission reduction project evaluation. In this paper, we propose a data-driven machine learning framework and method for predicting plantation stock based on airborne LiDAR + satellite remote sensing, and carried out experimental verification at the site of the National Forest emission reduction project in Southern China. We used step-up regression and random forest (RF) to screen LiDAR and Landsat 8 OLI multispectral indicators suitable for the prediction of plantation stock, and constructed a plantation stock model based on machine learning (support vector machine regression, RF regression). Our method is compared with traditional statistical methods (stepwise regression and partial least squares regression). Through the verification of 57 plantation field survey data, the accuracy of the stand estimation model constructed using the RF method is generally better (ΔR2 = 0.01~0.27, ΔRMSE = 1.88~13.77 m3·hm−2, ΔMAE = 1.17~13.57 m3·hm−2). The model evaluation accuracy based on machine learning is higher than that of the traditional statistical method, and the fitting R2 is greater than 0.91, while the fitting R2 of the traditional statistical method is 0.85. The best fitting models were all support vector regression models. The combination of UAV point clouds and satellite multi-spectral images has the best modeling effect, followed by LiDAR point clouds and Landsat 8. At present, this method is only applicable to artificial forests; further verification is needed for natural forests. In the future, the density and quality of higher clouds could be increased. The validity and accuracy of the method were further verified. This paper provides a method for predicting the accumulation of typical Chinese plantations at the forest farm scale based on the "airborne LiDAR + satellite remote sensing" data-driven machine learning modeling, which has potential application value for the current carbon neutrality goal of the southern plantation forest emission reduction project. When it comes to forest management and protection, knowledge is key. Therefore, forest mapping is crucial to obtain the required knowledge towards profitable resource exploitation and increased resilience against wildfires. Within this context, this paper presents a literature review on tree classification and segmentation using data acquired by unmanned aerial vehicles, with special focus on the last decade (2013–2023). The latest research trends in this field are presented and analyzed in two main vectors, namely: (1) data, where used sensors and data structures are resumed; and (2) methods, where remote sensing and data analysis methods are described, with particular focus on machine learning approaches. The study and review methodology filtered 979 papers, which were then screened, resulting in the 144 works included in this paper. These are systematically analyzed and organized by year, keywords, purpose, sensors, and methods used, easily allowing the readers to have a wide, but at the same time detailed, view of the latest trends in automatic tree classification and segmentation using unmanned aerial vehicles. This review shows that image processing and machine learning techniques applied to forestry and segmentation and classification tasks are focused on improving the accuracy and interpretability of the results by using multi-modal data, 3D information, and AI methods. Most works use RGB or multispectral cameras, or LiDAR scanners, individually. Motion blur recovery is a common method in the field of remote sensing image processing that can effectively improve the accuracy of detection and recognition. Among the existing motion blur recovery methods, the algorithms based on deep learning do not rely on a priori knowledge and, thus, have better generalizability. However, the existing deep learning algorithms usually suffer from feature misalignment, resulting in a high probability of missing details or errors in the recovered images. This paper proposes an end-to-end generative adversarial network (SDD-GAN) for single-image motion deblurring to address this problem and to optimize the recovery of blurred remote sensing images. Firstly, this paper applies a feature alignment module (FAFM) in the generator to learn the offset between feature maps to adjust the position of each sample in the convolution kernel and to align the feature maps according to the context; secondly, a feature importance selection module is introduced in the generator to adaptively filter the feature maps in the spatial and channel domains, preserving reliable details in the feature maps and improving the performance of the algorithm. In addition, this paper constructs a self-constructed remote sensing dataset (RSDATA) based on the mechanism of image blurring caused by the high-speed orbital motion of satellites. Comparative experiments are conducted on self-built remote sensing datasets and public datasets as well as on real remote sensing blurred images taken by an in-orbit satellite (CX-6(02)). The accuracy and rapidity of total iron content (TFE) analysis can accelerate iron ore production. Although the conventional TFE detection methods are accurate, its detection speed presents difficulties in meeting production requirements. Therefore, this paper proposes a method of TFE detection based on reflectance spectroscopy (wavelength range: 340–2500 nm) and remote sensing. Firstly, spectral experiments were conducted on iron ore using the HR SVC-1024 spectrometer to obtain spectral data for each sample. Then, the spectra were smoothed and dimensionally reduced by using wavelet transform and principal component analysis. To improve the detection accuracy of TFE, a two hidden layer extreme learning machine with variable neuron nodes based on an improved sparrow search algorithm and batch normalization optimization (MSSA-BNVTELM) is proposed. According to the experimental results, MSSA-BNVTELM exhibited superior detection accuracy in comparison to other algorithms. In addition, this research established a remote sensing detection model using Sentinel-2 data and MSSA-BNVTEM to detect the distribution of TFE in the mining area. The distribution of TFE in the mine area was plotted based on the detection results. Ocean sound speed is important for underwater acoustic applications, such as communications, navigation and localization, where the assumption of uniformly distributed sound speed profiles (SSPs) is generally used and greatly degrades the performance of underwater acoustic systems. The acquisition of SSPs is necessary for the corrections of the sound ray propagation paths. However, the inversion of SSPs is challenging due to the intricate relations of interrelated physical ocean elements and suffers from the high costs of calculations and hardware deployments. This paper proposes a novel sound speed inversion method based on multi-source ocean remote sensing observations and machine learning, which adapts to large-scale sea regions. Firstly, the datasets of SSPs are generated utilizing the Argo thermohaline profiles and the empirical formulas of the sound speed. Then, the SSPs are analyzed utilizing the empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) to reduce the dimensions of the feature space as well as the computational load. Considering the nonlinear regression relations of SSPs and the observed datasets, a general framework for sound speed inversion is formulated, which combines the designed machine learning models with the reduced-dimensional feature representations, multi-source ocean remote sensing observations and water temperature data. After being well trained, the proposed machine learning models realize the accurate inversion of the targeted ocean region by inputting the real-time ocean environmental data. Despite their importance to ecosystem services, wetlands are threatened by pollution and development. Over the last few decades, a growing number of wetland studies employed remote sensing (RS) to scientifically monitor the status of wetlands and support their sustainability. Considering the rapid evolution of wetland studies and significant progress that has been made in the field, this paper constitutes an overview of studies utilizing RS methods in wetland monitoring. It investigates publications from 1990 up to the middle of 2022, providing a systematic survey on RS data type, machine learning (ML) tools, publication details (e.g., authors, affiliations, citations, and publications date), case studies, accuracy metrics, and other parameters of interest for RS-based wetland studies by covering 344 papers. The RS data and ML combination is deemed helpful for wetland monitoring and multi-proxy studies, and it may open up new perspectives for research studies. In a rapidly changing wetlands landscape, integrating multiple RS data types and ML algorithms is an opportunity to advance science support for management decisions. This paper provides insight into the selection of suitable ML and RS data types for the detailed monitoring of wetland-associated systems. The synthesized findings of this paper are essential to determining best practices for environmental management, restoration, and conservation of wetlands. This meta-analysis establishes avenues for future research and outlines a baseline framework to facilitate further scientific research using the latest state-of-art ML tools for processing RS data. Underwater acoustic target recognition has always played a pivotal role in ocean remote sensing. By analyzing and processing ship-radiated signals, it is possible to determine the type and nature of a target. Historically, traditional signal processing techniques have been employed for target recognition in underwater environments, which often exhibit limitations in accuracy and efficiency. In response to these limitations, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) methods, particularly those leveraging machine learning and deep learning, has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Compared to traditional methods, these intelligent recognition techniques can autonomously, efficiently, and accurately identify underwater targets. This paper comprehensively reviews the contributions of intelligent techniques in underwater acoustic target recognition and outlines potential future directions, offering a forward-looking perspective on how ongoing advancements in AI can further revolutionize underwater acoustic target recognition in ocean remote sensing. Accurate estimation of soil moisture content (SMC) in the field is a critical aspect of precise irrigation management. The development of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms has provided an economically efficient means for field-scale SMC measurements. However, previous studies have mostly focused on single-sensor estimates of SMC. Additionally, the lack of differentiation between various crops and their growth stages has resulted in an unclear understanding of how crop types and growth stages affect the accuracy of SMC estimation at different soil depths. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to use UAV multimodal remote sensing and a machine learning algorithm to estimate the SMC in agricultural fields and investigate estimation's effectiveness under different scenarios. The results indicated the following: (1) The multispectral remote sensing method provided higher accuracy in SMC estimation compared to thermal infrared remote sensing. Moreover, the integration of multimodal data improved the accuracy of SMC estimation, enhancing the coefficient of determination (R2) by approximately 14% over that achieved through the use of multispectral data alone and 39% over that of thermal infrared data alone. (2) Across the entire growth period, the optimal soil depths of SMC estimation for soybean were 10 cm and 20 cm (average R2 were 0.81 and 0.82, respectively), while for corn, they were 10 cm, 20 cm, and 40 cm (average R2 were 0.59, 0.60, and 0.55, respectively). (3) The SMC estimation model performed better for both crops during the first three growth stages, with accuracy declining in the maturity stage. These results demonstrate that this approach can provide relatively accurate root zone SMC estimates for different crops throughout their main growth periods. This paper systematically reviews remote sensing technology and learning algorithms in exploring landslides. The work is categorized into four key components: (1) literature search characteristics, (2) geographical distribution and research publication trends, (3) progress of remote sensing and learning algorithms, and (4) application of remote sensing techniques and learning models for landslide susceptibility mapping, detections, prediction, inventory and deformation monitoring, assessment, and extraction and management. The literature selections were based on keyword searches using title/abstract and keywords from Web of Science and Scopus. A total of 186 research articles published between 2011 and 2024 were critically reviewed to provide answers to research questions related to the recent advances in the use of remote sensing technologies combined with artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) algorithms. This paper focuses on large-scale landslide susceptibility modelling in NW Croatia. The objective of this research was to provide new insight into stable and unstable area sampling strategies on a representative inventory of small and shallow landslides mainly occurring in soil and soft rock. Four strategies were tested for stable area sampling (random points, stable area polygon, stable polygon buffering and stable area centroid) in combination with four strategies for unstable area sampling (landslide polygon, smoothing digital terrain model derived landslide conditioning factors, polygon buffering and landslide centroid), resulting in eight sampling scenarios. Using Logistic Regression, Neural Network, Random Forest and Support Vector Machine algorithm, 32 models were derived and analysed. The main conclusions reveal that polygon sampling of unstable areas is an imperative in large-scale modelling, as well as that subjective and/or biased stable area sampling leads to misleading models. Moreover, Random Forest and Neural Network proved to be more favourable methods (0.804 and 0.805 AUC, respectively), but also showed extreme sensitivity to the tested sampling strategies. In the comprehensive comparison, the advantages and disadvantages of 32 derived models were analysed through quantitative and qualitative parameters to highlight their application to large-scale landslide zonation. The results yielded by this research are beneficial to the susceptibility modelling step in large-scale landslide susceptibility assessments as they enable the derivation of more reliable zonation maps applicable to spatial and urban planning systems. Effective planning and management strategies for restoring and conserving tropical peat swamp ecosystems require accurate and timely estimates of aboveground biomass (AGB), especially when monitoring the impacts of restoration interventions. The aim of this research is to assess changes in AGB and evaluate the effectiveness of restoration efforts in the North Selangor Peat Swamp Forest (NSPSF), one of the largest remaining peat swamp forests in Peninsular Malaysia, using advanced remote sensing techniques. A Random Forest machine learning method was employed to upscale AGB estimates, derived from a 'LiDAR AGB model', to larger landscape-scale areas with Sentinel-2 spectral and textural variables. The time period under investigation (2015–2018) marked a concentrated phase of restoration and regeneration efforts in NSPSF. The results demonstrate an overall increase in tropical peat swamp AGB during these years, where the total amount of estimated AGB stored in NSPSF increased from 19.3 Tg in 2015 to an estimated 19.8 Tg in 2018. The research found that a tailored variable selection approach improved predictions of AGB, with optimised input variables (n = 62) and parameter adjustments producing a good plausible result (R2 = 0.80; RMSE = 55.2 Mg/ha). Natural disasters pose significant threats to human life and property, exacerbated by their sudden onset and increasing frequency. This paper conducts a comprehensive bibliometric review to explore robust methodologies for post-disaster building damage assessment and reconnaissance, focusing on the integration of advanced data collection technologies and computational techniques. The objectives of this study were to assess the current landscape of methodologies, highlight technological advancements, and identify significant trends and gaps in the literature. Using a structured approach for data collection, this review analyzed 370 journal articles from the Scopus database from 2014 to 2024, emphasizing recent developments in remote sensing, including satellite and UAV technologies, and the application of machine learning and deep learning for damage detection and analysis. Our findings reveal substantial advancements in data collection and analysis techniques, underscoring the critical role of machine learning and remote sensing in enhancing disaster damage assessments. The results are significant as they highlight areas requiring further research and development, particularly in data fusion techniques, real-time processing capabilities, model generalization, UAV technology enhancements, and training for the rescue team. These areas are crucial for improving disaster management practices and enhancing community resilience. Combining remote sensing images with deep learning algorithms plays an important role in wide applications. However, it is difficult to have large-scale labeled datasets for remote sensing images because of acquisition conditions and costs. How to use the limited acquisition budget to obtaina better remote sensing image dataset is a problem worth studying. In response to this problem, this paper proposes a remote sensing image quality evaluation method based on node entropy, which can be combined with active learning to provide low-cost guidance for remote sensing image collection and labeling. The method includes a node selection module and a remote sensing image quality evaluation module. The function of the node selection module is to select representative images, and the remote sensing image quality evaluation module evaluates the remote sensing image information quality by calculating the node entropy of the images. The image at the decision boundary of the existing images has a higher information quality. To validate the method proposed in this paper, experiments are performed on two public datasets. As one of the earliest remote sensing indices, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) has been employed extensively for vegetation research. However, despite an abundance of NDVI review articles, these studies are predominantly limited to either one subject area or one area, with systematic NDVI reviews being relatively rare. Bibliometrics is a useful method of analyzing scientific literature that has been widely used in many disciplines; however, it has not yet been applied to comprehensively analyze NDVI research. Therefore, we used bibliometrics and scientific mapping methods to analyze citation data retrieved from the Web of Science during 1985–2021 with NDVI as the topic. According to the analysis results, the amount of NDVI research increased exponentially during the study period, and the related research fields became increasingly varied. Moreover, a greater number of satellite and aerial remote sensing platforms resulted in more diverse NDVI data sources. In future, machine learning methods and cloud computing platforms led by Google Earth Engine will substantially improve the accuracy and production efficiency of NDVI data products for more effective global research. The increasing frequency and magnitude of landslides underscore the growing importance of landslide prediction in light of factors like climate change. Traditional methods, including physics-based methods and empirical methods, are beset by high costs and a reliance on expert knowledge. With the advancement of remote sensing and machine learning, data-driven methods have emerged as the mainstream in landslide prediction. Despite their strong generalization capabilities and efficiency, data-driven methods suffer from the loss of semantic information during training due to their reliance on a 'sequence' modeling method for landslide scenarios, which impacts their predictive accuracy. An innovative method for landslide prediction is proposed in this paper. In this paper, we propose an innovative landslide prediction method. This method designs the NADE ontology as the schema layer and constructs the data layer of the knowledge graph, utilizing tile lists, landslide inventory, and environmental data to enhance the representation of complex landslide scenarios. Furthermore, the transformation of the landslide prediction task into a link prediction task is carried out, and a knowledge graph embedding model is trained to achieve landslide predictions. Experimental results demonstrate that the method improves the F1 score by 5% in scenarios with complete datasets and 17% in scenarios with sparse datasets compared to data-driven methods. Additionally, the application of the knowledge graph embedding model is utilized to generate susceptibility maps, and an analysis of the effectiveness of entity embeddings is conducted, highlighting the potential of knowledge graph embeddings in disaster management. This paper explores the application and advantages of remote sensing, machine learning, and mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR) as a popular proximal sensing spectroscopy tool in the estimation of soil organic carbon (SOC). It underscores the practical implications and benefits of the integrated approach combining machine learning, remote sensing, and proximal sensing for SOC estimation and prediction across a range of applications, including comprehensive soil health mapping and carbon credit assessment. These advanced technologies offer a promising pathway, reducing costs and resource utilization while improving the precision of SOC estimation. We conducted a comparative analysis between MIR-predicted SOC values and laboratory-measured SOC values using 36 soil samples. The results demonstrate a strong fit (R² = 0.83), underscoring the potential of this integrated approach. While acknowledging that our analysis is based on a limited sample size, these initial findings offer promise and serve as a foundation for future research. We will be providing updates when we obtain more data. Furthermore, this paper explores the potential for commercialising these technologies in Australia, with the aim of helping farmers harness the advantages of carbon markets. Based on our study's findings, coupled with insights from the existing literature, we suggest that adopting this integrated SOC measurement approach could significantly benefit local economies, enhance farmers' ability to monitor changes in soil health, and promote sustainable agricultural practices. The objects in remote sensing images have large-scale variations, arbitrary directions, and are usually densely arranged, and small objects are easily submerged by background noises. They all hinder accurate object detection. To address the above problems, this paper proposes an object detection method combining feature enhancement and hybrid attention. Firstly, a feature enhancement fusion network (FEFN) is designed, which carries out dilated convolution with different dilation rates acting on the multi-layer features, and thus fuses multi-scale, multi-receptive field feature maps to enhance the original features. FEFN obtains more robust and discriminative features, which adapt to various objects with different scales. Then, a hybrid attention mechanism (HAM) module composed of pixel attention and channel attention is proposed. Through context dependence and channel correlation, introduced by pixel attention and channel attention respectively, HAM can make the network focus on object features and suppress background noises. Finally, this paper uses box boundary-aware vectors to determine the locations of objects and detect the arbitrary direction objects accurately, even if they are densely arranged. The development of remote sensing technology has redefined the approaches to the Earth's surface monitoring. The Copernicus Programme promoted by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Union (EU), through the launch of the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Sentinel-1 and the multispectral Sentinel-2 satellites, has provided a valuable contribution to monitoring the Earth's surface. There are several review articles on the land use/land cover (LULC) matter using Sentinel images, but it lacks a methodical and extensive review in the specific field of land consumption monitoring, concerning the application of SAR images, in particular Sentinel-1 images. In this paper, we explored the potential of Sentinel-1 images to estimate land consumption using mathematical modeling, focusing on innovative approaches. Therefore, this research was structured into three principal steps: (1) searching for appropriate studies, (2) collecting information required from each paper, and (3) discussing and comparing the accuracy of the existing methods to evaluate land consumption and their applied conditions using Sentinel-1 Images. Mine pollution from mining activities is often widely recognised as a serious threat to public health, with mine solid waste causing problems such as tailings pond accumulation, which is considered the biggest hidden danger. The construction of tailings ponds not only causes land occupation and vegetation damage but also brings about potential environmental pollution, such as water and dust pollution, posing a health risk to nearby residents. If remote sensing images and machine learning techniques could be used to determine whether a tailings pond might have potential pollution and safety hazards, mainly monitoring tailings ponds that may have potential hazards, it would save a lot of effort in tailings ponds monitoring. Therefore, based on this background, this paper proposes to classify tailings ponds into two categories according to whether they are potentially risky or generally safe and to classify tailings ponds with remote sensing satellite images of tailings ponds using the DDN + ResNet-50 machine learning model based on ML.Net developed by Microsoft. In the discussion section, the paper introduces the environmental hazards of mine pollution and proposes the concept of "Healthy Mine" to provide development directions for mining companies and solutions to mine pollution and public health crises. Crop identification at the field level using remote sensing data is a very important task. However, the use of multispectral data for the construction of vegetation indices is sometimes impossible or limited. For such situations, solutions based on the use of time series of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) indices are promising, eliminating the problems associated with cloudiness and providing an assessment of crop development characteristics during the growing season. We evaluated the use of time series of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) indices to characterize crop development during the growing season. The use of SAR imagery for crop identification addresses issues related to cloudiness. Therefore, it is important to choose the SAR index that is the most stable and has the lowest spatial variability throughout the growing season while being comparable to the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The presented work is devoted to the study of these issues. In this study, the spatial variabilities of different SAR indices time series were compared for a single region for the first time to identify the most stable index for use in precision agriculture, including the in-field heterogeneity of crop sites, crop rotation control, mapping, and other tasks in various agricultural areas. Seventeen Sentinel-1B images of the southern part of the Khabarovsk Territory in the Russian Far East at a spatial resolution of 20 m and temporal resolution of 12 days for the period between 14 April 2021 and 1 November 2021 were obtained and processed to generate vertical–horizontal/vertical–vertical polarization (VH/VV), radar vegetation index (RVI), and dual polarimetric radar vegetation index (DpRVI) time series. NDVI time series were constructed from multispectral Sentinel-2 images using a cloud cover mask. The characteristics of time series maximums were calculated for different types of crops: soybean, oat, buckwheat, and timothy grass. The DpRVI index exhibited the highest stability, with coefficients of variation of the time series that were significantly lower than those for RVI and VH/VV. The main characteristics of the SAR and NDVI time series—the maximum values, the dates of the maximum values, and the variability of these indices—were compared. The variabilities of the maximum values and dates of maximum values for DpRVI were lower than for RVI and VH/VV, whereas the variabilities of the maximum values and the dates of maximum values were comparable for DpRVI and NDVI. On the basis of the DpRVI index, classifications were carried out using seven machine learning methods (fine tree, quadratic discriminant, Gaussian naïve Bayes, fine k nearest neighbors or KNN, random under-sampling boosting or RUSBoost, random forest, and support vector machine) for experimental sites covering a total area of 1009.8 ha. The quadratic discriminant method yielded the best results, with a pixel classification accuracy of approximately 82% and a kappa value of 0.67. Overall, 90% of soybean, 74.1% of oat, 68.9% of buckwheat, and 57.6% of timothy grass pixels were correctly classified. At the field level, 94% of the fields included in the test dataset were correctly classified. The paper results show that the DpRVI can be used in cases where the NDVI is limited, allowing for the monitoring of phenological development and crop mapping. Remote sensing technology has been modernized by artificial intelligence, which has made it possible for deep learning algorithms to extract useful information from images. However, overfitting and lack of uncertainty quantification, high-resolution images, information loss in traditional feature extraction, and background information retrieval for detected objects limit the use of deep learning models in various remote sensing applications. This paper proposes a Bayes by backpropagation (BBB)-based system for scene-driven identification and information retrieval in order to overcome the above-mentioned problems. We present the Bayes R-CNN, a two-stage object detection technique to reduce overfitting while also quantifying uncertainty for each object recognized within a given image. To extract features more successfully, we replace the traditional feature extraction model with our novel Multi-Resolution Extraction Network (MRENet) model. We propose the multi-level feature fusion module (MLFFM) in the inner lateral connection and a Bayesian Distributed Lightweight Attention Module (BDLAM) to reduce information loss in the feature pyramid network (FPN). In addition, our system incorporates a Bayesian image super-resolution model which enhances the quality of the image to improve the prediction accuracy of the Bayes R-CNN. Notably, MRENet is used to classify the background of the detected objects to provide detailed interpretation of the object. Our proposed system is comprehensively trained and assessed utilizing the state-of-the-art DIOR and HRSC2016 datasets. Remote sensing methods have the potential to improve lake water quality monitoring and decision-making in water management. This review discusses the use of remote sensing methods for monitoring and assessing water quality in lakes. It explains the principles of remote sensing and the different methods used for retrieving water quality parameters in complex waterbodies. The review highlights the importance of considering the variability of optically active parameters and the need for comprehensive studies that encompass different seasons and time frames. The paper addresses the specific physical and biological parameters that can be effectively estimated using remote sensing, such as chlorophyll-α, turbidity, water transparency (Secchi disk depth), electrical conductivity, surface salinity, and water temperature. It further provides a comprehensive summary of the bands, band combinations, and band equations commonly used for remote sensing of these parameters per satellite sensor. It also discusses the limitations of remote sensing methods and the challenges associated with satellite systems. The review recommends integrating remote sensing methods using in situ measurements and computer modelling to improve the understanding of water quality. It suggests future research directions, including the importance of optimizing grid selection and time frame for in situ measurements by combining hydrodynamic models with remote sensing retrieval methods, considering variability in water quality parameters when analysing satellite imagery, the development of advanced technologies, and the integration of machine learning algorithms for effective water quality problem-solving. In satellite imagery, clouds obstruct the ground information, directly impacting various downstream applications. Thus, cloud annotation/cloud detection serves as the initial preprocessing step in remote sensing image analysis. Recently, deep learning methods have significantly improved in the field of cloud detection, but training these methods necessitates abundant annotated data, which requires experts with professional domain knowledge. Moreover, the influx of remote sensing data from new satellites has further led to an increase in the cost of cloud annotation. To address the dependence on labeled datasets and professional domain knowledge, this paper proposes an automatic cloud annotation method for satellite remote sensing images, CloudAUE. Unlike traditional approaches, CloudAUE does not rely on labeled training datasets and can be operated by users without domain expertise. To handle the irregular shapes of clouds, CloudAUE firstly employs a convex hull algorithm for selecting cloud and non-cloud regions by polygons. When selecting convex hulls, the cloud region is first selected, and points at the edges of the cloud region are sequentially selected as polygon vertices to form a polygon that includes the cloud region. Then, the same selection is performed on non-cloud regions. Subsequently, the fast KD-Tree algorithm is used for pixel classification. Finally, an uncertainty method is proposed to evaluate the quality of annotation. When the confidence value of the image exceeds a preset threshold, the annotation process terminates and achieves satisfactory results. When the value falls below the threshold, the image needs to undergo a subsequent round of annotation. Through experiments on two labeled datasets, HRC and Landsat 8, CloudAUE demonstrates comparable or superior accuracy to deep learning algorithms, and requires only one to two annotations to obtain ideal results. An unlabeled self-built Google Earth dataset is utilized to validate the effectiveness and generalizability of CloudAUE. To show the extension capabilities in various fields, CloudAUE also achieves desirable results on a forest fire dataset. Advancements in imaging, computer vision, and automation have revolutionized various fields, including field-based high-throughput plant phenotyping (FHTPP). This integration allows for the rapid and accurate measurement of plant traits. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) have emerged as a powerful tool in FHTPP, particularly in crop segmentation—identifying crops from the background—crucial for trait analysis. However, the effectiveness of DCNNs often hinges on the availability of large, labeled datasets, which poses a challenge due to the high cost of labeling. In this study, a deep learning with bagging approach is introduced to enhance crop segmentation using high-resolution RGB images, tested on the NU-Spidercam dataset from maize plots. The proposed method outperforms traditional machine learning and deep learning models in prediction accuracy and speed. Remarkably, it achieves up to 40 % higher Intersection-over-Union (IoU) than the threshold method and 11 % over conventional machine learning, with significantly faster prediction times and manageable training duration. Crucially, it demonstrates that even small labeled datasets can yield high accuracy in semantic segmentation. This approach not only proves effective for FHTPP but also suggests potential for broader application in remote sensing, offering a scalable solution to semantic segmentation challenges. Machine learning models are used to identify crops in satellite data, which achieve high classification accuracy but do not necessarily have a high degree of transferability to new regions. This paper investigates the use of machine learning models for crop classification using Sentinel-2 imagery. It proposes a new testing methodology that systematically analyzes the quality of the spatial transfer of trained models. In this study, the classification results of Random Forest (RF), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and a Majority Voting of all models and their spatial transferability are assessed. The proposed testing methodology comprises 18 test scenarios to investigate phenological, temporal, spatial, and quantitative (quantitative regarding available training data) influences. Results show that the model accuracies tend to decrease with increasing time due to the differences in phenological phases in different regions, with a combined F1-score of 82% (XGBoost) when trained on a single day, 72% (XGBoost) when trained on the half-season, and 61% when trained over the entire growing season (Majority Voting). The value of artificial intelligence and machine learning applications for use in heritage research is increasingly appreciated. In specific areas, notably remote sensing, datasets have increased in extent and resolution to the point that manual interpretation is problematic and the availability of skilled interpreters to undertake such work is limited. Interpretation of the geophysical datasets associated with prehistoric submerged landscapes is particularly challenging. Following the Last Glacial Maximum, sea levels rose by 120 m globally, and vast, habitable landscapes were lost to the sea. These landscapes were inaccessible until extensive remote sensing datasets were provided by the offshore energy sector. In this paper, we provide the results of a research programme centred on AI applications using data from the southern North Sea. Here, an area of c. 188,000 km2 of habitable terrestrial land was inundated between c. 20,000 BP and 7000 BP, along with the cultural heritage it contained. As part of this project, machine learning tools were applied to detect and interpret features with potential archaeological significance from shallow seismic data. The output provides a proof-of-concept model demonstrating verifiable results and the potential for a further, more complex, leveraging of AI interpretation for the study of submarine palaeolandscapes. With the increase in the amount and variety of data that are constantly produced, collected, and exchanged between systems, the efficiency and accuracy of solutions/services that use data as input may suffer if an inappropriate or inaccurate technique, method, or tool is chosen to deal with them. This paper presents a global overview of urban data sources and structures used to train machine learning (ML) algorithms integrated into urban planning decision support systems (DSS). It contributes to a common understanding of choosing the right urban data for a given urban planning issue, i.e., their type, source and structure, for more efficient use in training ML models. For the purpose of this study, we conduct a systematic literature review (SLR) of all relevant peer-reviewed studies available in the Scopus database. More precisely, 248 papers were found to be relevant with their further analysis using a text-mining approach to determine (a) the main urban data sources used for ML modeling, (b) the most popular approaches used in relevant urban planning and urban problem-solving studies and their relationship to the type of data source used, and (c) the problems commonly encountered in their use. After classifying them, we identified the strengths and weaknesses of data sources depending on several predefined factors. We found that the data mainly come from two main categories of sources, namely (1) sensors and (2) statistical surveys, including social network data. They can be classified as (a) opportunistic or (b) non-opportunistic depending on the process of data acquisition, collection, and storage. Data sources are closely correlated with their structure and potential urban planning issues to be addressed. Almost all urban data have an indexed structure and, in particular, either attribute tables for statistical survey data and data from simple sensors (e.g., climate and pollution sensors) or vectors, mostly obtained from satellite images after large-scale spatio-temporal analysis. The paper also provides a discussion of the potential opportunities, emerging issues, and challenges that urban data sources face and should overcome to better catalyze intelligent/smart planning. This should contribute to the general understanding of the data, their sources and the challenges to be faced and overcome by those seeking data and integrating them into smart applications and urban-planning processes. The lack of high-resolution training sets for intelligent landslide recognition using high-resolution remote sensing images is a major challenge. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method for reconstructing low-resolution landslide remote sensing images based on a Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network (SRGAN) to fully utilize low-resolution images in the process of constructing high-resolution landslide training sets. First, this paper introduces a novel Enhanced Depth Residual Block called EDCA, which delivers stable performance compared to other models while only slightly increasing model parameters. Secondly, it incorporates coordinated attention and redesigns the feature extraction module of the network, thus boosting the learning ability of image features and the expression of high-frequency information. Finally, a residual stacking-based landslide remote sensing image reconstruction strategy was proposed using EDCA residual blocks. This strategy employs residual learning to enhance the reconstruction performance of landslide images and introduces LPIPS for evaluating the test images. The experiment was conducted using landslide data collected by drones in the field. The results show that compared with traditional interpolation algorithms and classic deep learning reconstruction algorithms, this approach performs better in terms of SSIM, PSNR, and LPIPS. Remote sensing (RS) technology has significantly contributed to geological exploration and mineral resource assessment. However, its effective application in vegetated areas encounters various challenges. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities associated with RS-based lithological identification in vegetated regions which includes the extensively reviewed prior research concerning the identification of lithology in vegetated regions, encompassing the utilized remote sensing data sources, and classification methodologies. Moreover, it offers a comprehensive overview of the application of remote sensing techniques in the domain of lithological mapping. Notably, hyperspectral RS and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) have emerged as prominent tools in lithological identification. In addition, this paper addresses the limitations inherent in RS technology, including issues related to vegetation cover and terrain effects, which significantly impact the accuracy of lithological mapping. To propel further advancements in the field, the paper proposes promising avenues for future research and development. These include the integration of multi-source data to improve classification accuracy and the exploration of novel RS techniques and algorithms. The rapid advancement of remote sensing technology has significantly enhanced the temporal resolution of remote sensing data. Multitemporal remote sensing image classification can extract richer spatiotemporal features. However, this also presents the challenge of mining massive data features. In response to this challenge, deep learning methods have become prevalent in machine learning and have been widely applied in remote sensing due to their ability to handle large datasets. The combination of remote sensing classification and deep learning has become a trend and has developed rapidly in recent years. However, there is a lack of summary and discussion on the research status and trends in multitemporal images. This review retrieved and screened 170 papers and proposed a research framework for this field. It includes retrieval statistics from existing research, preparation of multitemporal datasets, sample acquisition, an overview of typical models, and a discussion of application status. Finally, this paper discusses current problems and puts forward prospects for the future from three directions: adaptability between deep learning models and multitemporal classification, prospects for high-resolution image applications, and large-scale monitoring and model generalization. Cloud detection is one of the critical tasks in remote sensing image preprocessing. Remote sensing images usually contain multi-dimensional information, which is not utilized entirely in existing deep learning methods. This paper proposes a novel cloud detection algorithm based on multi-scale input and dual-channel attention mechanisms. Firstly, we remodeled the original data to a multi-scale layout in terms of channels and bands. Then, we introduced the dual-channel attention mechanism into the existing semantic segmentation network, to focus on both band information and angle information based on the reconstructed multi-scale data. Finally, a multi-scale fusion strategy was introduced to combine band information and angle information simultaneously. Overall, in the experiments undertaken in this paper, the proposed method achieved a pixel accuracy of 92.66% and a category pixel accuracy of 92.51%. For cloud detection, the proposed method achieved a recall of 97.76% and an F1 of 95.06%. The intersection over union (IoU) of the proposed method was 89.63%. Soil moisture (SM) is an important parameter in water cycle research. Rapid and accurate monitoring of SM is critical for hydrological and agricultural applications, such as flood detection and drought characterization. The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) uses L-band microwave signals as carriers, which are particularly sensitive to SM and suitable for monitoring it. In recent years, with the development of Global Navigation Satellite System–Reflectometry (GNSS-R) technology and data analysis methods, many studies have been conducted on GNSS-R SM monitoring, which has further enriched the research content. However, current GNSS-R SM inversion methods mainly rely on auxiliary data to reduce the impact of non-target parameters on the accuracy of inversion results, which limits the practical application and widespread promotion of GNSS-R SM monitoring. In order to promote further development in GNSS-R SM inversion research, this paper aims to comprehensively review the current status and principles of GNSS-R SM inversion methods. It also aims to identify the problems and future research directions of existing research, providing a reference for researchers. Firstly, it introduces the characteristics, usage scenarios, and research status of different GNSS-R SM observation platforms. Then, it explains the mechanisms and modeling methods of various GNSS-R SM inversion research methods. Finally, it highlights the shortcomings of existing research and proposes future research directions, including the introduction of transfer learning (TL), construction of small models based on spatiotemporal analysis and spatial feature fusion, and further promoting downscaling research. Cloud cover assessment is crucial for meteorology, Earth observation, and environmental monitoring, providing valuable data for weather forecasting, climate modeling, and remote sensing activities. Depending on the specific purpose, identifying and accounting for pixels affected by clouds is essential in spectral remote sensing imagery. In applications such as land monitoring and various remote sensing activities, detecting/removing cloud-contaminated pixels is crucial to ensuring the accuracy of advanced processing of satellite imagery. Typically, the objective of cloud masking is to produce an image where every pixel in a satellite spectral image is categorized as either clear or cloudy. Nevertheless, there is also a prevalent approach in the literature that yields a multi-class output. With the progress in Machine and Deep Learning, coupled with the accelerated capabilities of GPUs, and the abundance of available remote sensing data, novel opportunities and methods for cloud detection have emerged, improving the accuracy and the efficiency of the algorithms. This paper provides a review of these last methods for cloud masking in multispectral satellite imagery, with emphasis on the Deep Learning approach, highlighting their benefits and challenges. The accurate estimation of forest aboveground biomass is of great significance for forest management and carbon balance monitoring. Remote sensing instruments have been widely applied in forest parameters inversion with wide coverage and high spatiotemporal resolution. In this paper, the capability of different remote-sensed imagery was investigated, including multispectral images (GaoFen-6, Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8) and various SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data (GaoFen-3, Sentinel-1, ALOS-2), in aboveground forest biomass estimation. In particular, based on the forest inventory data of Hangzhou in China, the Random Forest (RF), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Convolutional Neural Networks Long Short-Term Memory Networks (CNN-LSTM) algorithms were deployed to construct the forest biomass estimation models, respectively. The estimate accuracies were evaluated under the different configurations of images and methods. The results show that for the SAR data, ALOS-2 has a higher biomass estimation accuracy than the GaoFen-3 and Sentinel-1. Moreover, the GaoFen-6 data is slightly worse than Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 optical data in biomass estimation. In contrast with the single source, integrating multisource data can effectively enhance accuracy, with improvements ranging from 5% to 10%. The CNN-LSTM generally performs better than CNN and RF, regardless of the data used. The combination of CNN-LSTM and multisource data provided the best results in this case and can achieve the maximum R2 value of up to 0.74. It was found that the majority of the biomass values in the study area in 2018 ranged from 60 to 90 Mg/ha, with an average value of 64.20 Mg/ha. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Efficient monitoring of water quality parameters (WQPs) is crucial for environmental health. Drone hyperspectral images have offered the potential for the flexible and accurate retrieval of WQPs. However, a machine learning (ML)-based multi-process strategy for WQP inversion has yet to be established. Taking a typical urban river in Guangzhou city, China, as the study area, this paper proposes a machine learning-based strategy combining spectral preprocessing and ML regression models with ground truth WQP data. Fractional order derivation (FOD) and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) methods were used to explore potential spectral information. Then, multiple methods were applied to select sensitive features. Three modeling strategies were constructed for retrieving four WQPs, including the Secchi depth (SD), turbidity (TUB), total phosphorus (TP), and permanganate index (CODMn). The highest R2s were 0.68, 0.90, 0.70, and 0.96, respectively, with corresponding RMSEs of 13.73 cm, 6.50 NTU, 0.06 mg/L, and 0.20 mg/L. Decision tree regression (DTR) was found to have the potential with the best performance for the first three WQPs, and eXtreme Gradient Boosting Regression (XGBR) for the CODMn. Moreover, tailored feature selection methods emphasize the importance of fitting processing strategies for specific parameters. Deep learning, which is a dominating technique in artificial intelligence, has completely changed image understanding over the past decade. As a consequence, the sea ice extraction (SIE) problem has reached a new era. We present a comprehensive review of four important aspects of SIE, including algorithms, datasets, applications and future trends. Our review focuses on research published from 2016 to the present, with a specific focus on deep-learning-based approaches in the last five years. We divided all related algorithms into three categories, including the conventional image classification approach, the machine learning-based approach and deep-learning-based methods. We reviewed the accessible ice datasets including SAR-based datasets, the optical-based datasets and others. The applications are presented in four aspects including climate research, navigation, geographic information systems (GIS) production and others. Wildfires are important natural drivers of forest stands dynamics, strongly affecting their natural regeneration and providing important ecosystem services. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of spatiotemporal burnt area (BA) patterns in the Middle Volga region of the Russian Federation from 2000 to 2022, using remote sensing time series data and considering the influence of climatic factors on forest fires. To assess the temporal trends, the Mann–Kendall nonparametric statistical test and Theil–Sen's slope estimator were applied using the LandTrendr algorithm on the Google Earth Platform (GEE). The accuracy assessment revealed a high overall accuracy (>84%) and F-score value (>82%) for forest burnt area detection, evaluated against 581 reference test sites. The results indicate that fire occurrences in the region were predominantly irregular, with the highest frequency recorded as 7.3 over the 22-year period. The total forest BA was estimated to be around 280 thousand hectares, accounting for 1.7% of the land surface area or 4.0% of the total forested area in the Middle Volga region. Coniferous forest stands were found to be the most fire-prone ecosystems, contributing to 59.0% of the total BA, while deciduous stands accounted for 25.1%. Insignificant fire occurrences were observed in young forests and shrub lands. On a seasonal scale, temperature was found to have a greater impact on BA compared with precipitation and wind speed. This paper combines feature selection with machine learning algorithms to achieve object-oriented classification of crops in Gaofen-6 remote sensing images. The study provides technical support and methodological references for research on regional monitoring of food crops and precision agriculture management. "Staple-food-shifting" refers to the planting of other cash crops on cultivated land that should have been planted with staple crops such as wheat, rice, and maize, resulting in a change in the type of arable land cultivated. An accurate grasp of the spatial and temporal patterns of "staple-food-shifting" on arable land is an important basis for rationalizing land use and protecting food security. In this study, the Shihezi Reclamation Area in Xinjiang is selected as the study area, and Gaofen-6 satellite images are used to study the changes in the cultivated area of staple food crops and their regional distribution. Firstly, the images are segmented at multiple scales and four types of features are extracted, totaling sixty-five feature variables. Secondly, six feature selection algorithms are used to optimize the feature variables, and a total of nine feature combinations are designed. Finally, k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Random Forest (RF), and Decision Tree (DT) are used as the basic models of image classification to explore the best combination of feature selection method and machine learning model suitable for wheat, maize, and cotton classification. The results show that our proposed optimal feature selection method (OFSM) can significantly improve the classification accuracy by up to 15.02% compared to the Random Forest Feature Importance Selection (RF-FI), Random Forest Recursive Feature Elimination (RF-RFE), and XGBoost Feature Importance Selection (XGBoost-FI) methods. Among them, the OF-RF-RFE model constructed based on KNN performs the best, with the overall accuracy, average user accuracy, average producer accuracy, and kappa coefficient reaching 90.68%, 87.86%, 86.68%, and 0.84, respectively. High dynamic range imaging (HDRI) is an essential task in remote sensing, enhancing low dynamic range (LDR) remote sensing images and benefiting downstream tasks, such as object detection and image segmentation. However, conventional frame-based HDRI methods may encounter challenges in real-world scenarios due to the limited information inherent in a single image captured by conventional cameras. In this paper, an event-based remote sensing HDR imaging framework is proposed to address this problem, denoted as ERS-HDRI, which reconstructs the remote sensing HDR image from a single-exposure LDR image and its concurrent event streams. The proposed ERS-HDRI leverages a coarse-to-fine framework, incorporating the event-based dynamic range enhancement (E-DRE) network and the gradient-enhanced HDR reconstruction (G-HDRR) network. Specifically, to efficiently achieve dynamic range fusion from different domains, the E-DRE network is designed to extract the dynamic range features from LDR frames and events and perform intra- and cross-attention operations to adaptively fuse multi-modal data. A denoise network and a dense feature fusion network are then employed for the generation of the coarse, clean HDR image. Then, the G-HDRR network, with its gradient enhancement module and multiscale fusion module, performs structure enforcement on the coarse HDR image and generates a fine informative HDR image. In addition, this work introduces a specialized hybrid imaging system and a novel, real-world event-based remote sensing HDRI dataset that contains aligned remote sensing LDR images, remote sensing HDR images, and concurrent event streams for evaluation. Comprehensive experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method.
