During virus outbreaks in the recent past, web behavior mining, modeling, and analysis have served as means to examine, explore, interpret, assess, and forecast the worldwide perception, readiness, reactions, and response linked to these virus outbreaks. The recent outbreak of the Marburg Virus disease (MVD), the high fatality rate of MVD, and the conspiracy theory linking the FEMA alert signal in the United States on 4 October 2023 with MVD and a zombie outbreak, resulted in a diverse range of reactions in the general public which has transpired in a surge in web behavior in this context. This resulted in "Marburg Virus" featuring in the list of the top trending topics on Twitter on 3 October 2023, and "Emergency Alert System" and "Zombie" featuring in the list of top trending topics on Twitter on 4 October 2023. No prior work in this field has mined and analyzed the emerging trends in web behavior in this context. The work presented in this paper aims to address this research gap and makes multiple scientific contributions to this field. First, it presents the results of performing time-series forecasting of the search interests related to MVD emerging from 216 different regions on a global scale using ARIMA, LSTM, and Autocorrelation. The results of this analysis present the optimal model for forecasting web behavior related to MVD in each of these regions. Second, the correlation between search interests related to MVD and search interests related to zombies was investigated. The findings show that there were several regions where there was a statistically significant correlation between MVD-related searches and zombie-related searches on Google on 4 October 2023. Finally, the correlation between zombie-related searches in the United States and other regions was investigated. This paper is the first to study a comparatively new Environmental Kuznets Curve which traces empirically the relationship between environmental abatement and real GDP. Our model is a partial linear semi parametric model that allows for two way fixed effects to eliminate the bias arising from two sources. We use data for recycling and real GDP, for fifty states of the United States for the years between 1988 and 2017. We find evidence that this relationship is characterized by an increasing curve which confirms the existence of a J curve, a finding that agrees with the predictions from recent theoretical models. In this paper, we analyzed a dataset of over 2000 crypto-assets to assess their credit risk by computing their probability of death using the daily range. Unlike conventional low-frequency volatility models that only utilize close-to-close prices, the daily range incorporates all the information provided in traditional daily datasets, including the open-high-low-close (OHLC) prices for each asset. We evaluated the accuracy of the probability of death estimated with the daily range against various forecasting models, including credit scoring models, machine learning models, and time-series-based models. Our study considered different definitions of "dead coins" and various forecasting horizons. Our results indicate that credit scoring models and machine learning methods incorporating lagged trading volumes and online searches were the best models for short-term horizons up to 30 days. Conversely, time-series models using the daily range were more appropriate for longer term forecasts, up to one year. Additionally, our analysis revealed that the models using the daily range signaled, far in advance, the weakened credit position of the crypto derivatives trading platform FTX, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States on 11 November 2022. This paper extends the conditional autoregressive range (CARR) model to the multivariate CARR (MCARR) model and further to the two-stage MCARR-return model to model and forecast volatilities, correlations and returns of multiple financial assets. The first stage model fits the scaled realised Parkinson volatility measures using individual series and their pairwise sums of indices to the MCARR model to obtain the fitted volatilities. Then covariances are calculated to construct the fitted variance–covariance matrix of returns which are imputed into the stage-two return model to capture the heteroskedasticity of assets' returns. We investigate different choices of mean functions to describe the volatility dynamics. Empirical applications are based on the Standard and Poor 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average and Dow Jones United States Financial Service Indices. Results show that the stage-one MCARR models using asymmetric mean functions give better in-sample model fits than those based on symmetric mean functions. They also provide better out-of-sample volatility forecasts than those using CARR models based on two robust loss functions. We also find that the stage-two return models with constant means and multivariate Student-t errors give better in-sample fits than the Baba–Engle–Kraft–Kroner generalised autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity models. The estimates and forecasts of value-at-risk (VaR) and conditional VaR based on the best MCARR-return models for each asset are provided and tested using backtests to confirm the accuracy of the VaR forecasts. Accurately capturing wind speed fluctuations and quantifying the uncertainties has important implications for energy planning and management. This paper proposes a novel hybrid machine learning model to solve the problem of probabilistic prediction of wind speed. The model couples the light gradient boosting machine (LGB) model with the Gaussian process regression (GPR) model, where the LGB model can provide high-precision deterministic wind speed prediction results, and the GPR model can provide reliable probabilistic prediction results. The proposed model was applied to predict wind speeds for a real wind farm in the United States. The eight contrasting models are compared in terms of deterministic prediction and probabilistic prediction, respectively. The experimental results show that the LGB-GPR model improves the point forecast accuracy (RMSE) by up to 20.0% and improves the probabilistic forecast reliability (CRPS) by up to 21.5% compared to a single GPR model. This paper describes the development of an optimized corn yield prediction model under extreme weather conditions for the Midwestern United States (US). We tested six different artificial intelligence (AI) models using satellite images and meteorological data for the dominant growth period. To examine the effects of extreme weather events, we defined the drought and heatwave by considering the characteristics of corn growth and selected the cases for sensitivity tests from a historical database. In particular, we conducted an optimization for the hyperparameters of the deep neural network (DNN) model to ensure the best configuration for accuracy improvement. The result for drought cases showed that our DNN model was approximately 51–98% more accurate than the other five AI models in terms of root mean square error (RMSE). For the heatwave cases, our DNN model showed approximately 30–77% better accuracy in terms of RMSE. The correlation coefficient was 0.954 for drought cases and 0.887–0.914 for heatwave cases. Moreover, the accuracy of our DNN model was very stable, despite the increases in the duration of the heatwave. It indicates that the optimized DNN model can provide robust predictions for corn yield under conditions of extreme weather and can be extended to other prediction models for various crops in future work. Forecasting construction spending is important for civil engineering practitioners to make business decisions. Currently, the main body of forecasting literature pertains exclusively to aggregate construction investment, such as total construction spending (TTLCON), private construction spending, or residential construction spending. But type-specific construction spending, such as that for education, healthcare, and religion, had yet to be explored using forecasting techniques. This case study presents a viable procedure by which aggregate and type-specific non-residential construction can be forecasted. The procedure that involves the use of the Granger causality test and the Vector Autoregression (VAR) model proved to be able to provide an accurate forecast pre-COVID-19, with some accuracy even during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Lessons learned include the following: (1) effort should be diverted towards model interpretation, as the impulse–response trial yields results conforming to current well-established empirical evidence; (2) a type-specific approach should be adopted when analyzing construction spending, as different types of construction spending react differently to potential indicators; and (3) complex models incorporating multiple indicators should be used to generate a forecast, as a complex model has a higher chance of containing parameters explanatory of the target variable's features during the testing period. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupts capital markets and confuses decision makers. This event represents an opportunity to better understand how financial analysts forecast earnings. We focus on forecasts for Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) in the United States, since REITs are relatively transparent during normal times, and since the real estate sector, as a whole, displays wide variations in forecasts during the pandemic. Using data between October 2018 and November 2020, our regression analysis finds that the severity of the pandemic increases analysts' forecast error and dispersion. Government interventions have an offsetting effect, which is relevant during the more severe times. These results are robust to various measures of the severity of the pandemic. We also find that the pandemic has differential effects across property types, where forecast error rises by more, for REITs, when focusing on Hospitality and Industrial properties, and dispersion rises by more, for REITs, when focusing on Hospitality, Retail, and Technology properties. Soil temperature (ST) plays a key role in the processes and functions of almost all ecosystems, and is also an essential parameter for various applications such as agricultural production, geothermal development, and their utilization. Although numerous machine learning models have been used in the prediction of ST, and good results have been obtained, most of the current studies have focused on daily or monthly ST predictions, while hourly ST predictions are scarce. This paper presents a novel scheme for forecasting the hourly ST using weather forecast data. The method considers the hourly ST prediction to be the superposition of two parts, namely, the daily average ST prediction and the ST amplitude (the difference between the hourly ST and the daily average ST) prediction. According to the results of correlation analysis, we selected nine meteorological parameters and combined two temporal parameters as the input vectors for predicting the daily average ST. For the task of predicting the ST amplitude, seven meteorological parameters and one temporal parameter were selected as the inputs. Two submodels were constructed using a deep bidirectional long short-term memory network (BiLSTM). For the task of hourly ST prediction at five different soil depths at 30 sites, which are located in 5 common climates in the United States, the results showed the method proposed in this paper performs best at all depths for 30 stations (100% of all) for the root mean square error (RMSE), 27 stations (90% of all) for the mean absolute error (MAE), and 30 stations (100% of all) for the coefficient of determination (R2), respectively. Moreover, the method adopted in this study displays a stronger ST prediction ability than the traditional methods under all climate types involved in the experiment, the hourly ST produced by it can be used as a driving parameter for high-resolution biogeochemical models, land surface models and hydrological models and can provide ideas for an analysis of other time series data. Hydrological forecasting plays a crucial role in mitigating flood risks and managing water resources. Data-driven hydrological models demonstrate exceptional fitting capabilities and adaptability. Recognizing the limitations of single-model forecasting, this study introduces an innovative approach known as the Improved K-Nearest Neighbor Multi-Model Ensemble (IKNN-MME) method to enhance the runoff prediction. IKNN-MME dynamically adjusts model weights based on the similarity of historical data, acknowledging the influence of different training data features on localized predictions. By combining an enhanced K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) algorithm with adaptive weighting, it offers a more powerful and flexible ensemble. This study evaluates the performance of the IKNN-MME method across four basins in the United States and compares it to other multi-model ensemble methods and benchmark models. Studying the question of whether macroeconomic predictors play a role in forecasting stock-market volatility has a long and significant tradition in the empirical finance literature. We went beyond the earlier literature in that we studied whether the presidential approval rating can be used as a single-variable substitute in place of standard macroeconomic predictors when forecasting stock-market volatility in the United States (US). Political-economy considerations imply that the presidential approval rating should reflect fluctuations in macroeconomic predictors and, hence, may absorb or even improve on the predictive value for stock-market volatility of the latter. In the western United States, snow accumulation, storage, and ablation affect seasonal runoff. Thus, the prediction of snowmelt is essential to improve the reliability of water supply forecasts to guide water allocation and operational decisions. The current method used at the Colorado Basin River Forecast Center (CBRFC) couples the SNOW-17 temperature-index snow model and the Sacramento Soil Moisture Accounting (SAC-SMA) runoff model in a lumped approach. Limitations in parameter transferability and calibration requirements for changing conditions with the temperature-index model motivated this research, in which new avenues were investigated to assess and prototype the application of an energy-balance snow model in a distributed modeling approach. The Utah Energy Balance (UEB) model was chosen to compare with the SNOW-17 model because it is simple and parsimonious, making it suitable for distributed application with the potential to improve water supply forecasts. Each model was coupled with the SAC-SMA model and the Rutpix7 routing model to simulate basin snowmelt and discharge. All the models were applied on grids over watersheds using the Research Distributed Hydrologic Model (RDHM) framework. Case studies were implemented for two study sites in the Colorado River basin over a period of two decades. The model performance was evaluated by comparing the model output with observed daily discharge and snow-covered area data obtained from remote sensing sources. Simulated evaporative components of sublimation and evapotranspiration were also evaluated. The results showed that the UEB model, requiring calibration of only a snow drift factor, achieves a comparable performance to the calibrated SNOW-17 model, and both provided reasonable basin snow and discharge simulations in the two study sites. The UEB model had the additional advantage of being able to explicitly simulate sublimation for different land types and thus better quantify evaporative water balance components and their sensitivity to land cover change. UEB also has a better transferability potential because it requires calibration of fewer parameters than SNOW-17. The majority of the parameters for UEB are physically based and regarded as constants characterizing spatially invariant properties of snow processes. While the use of crime data has been widely advocated in the literature, its availability is often limited to large urban cities and isolated databases that tend not to allow for spatial comparisons. This paper presents an efficient machine learning framework capable of predicting spatial crime occurrences, without using past crime as a predictor, and at a relatively high resolution: the U.S. Census Block Group level. The proposed framework is based on an in-depth multidisciplinary literature review allowing the selection of 188 best-fit crime predictors from socio-economic, demographic, spatial, and environmental data. Such data are published periodically for the entire United States. The selection of the appropriate predictive model was made through a comparative study of different machine learning families of algorithms, including generalized linear models, deep learning, and ensemble learning. The gradient boosting model was found to yield the most accurate predictions for violent crimes, property crimes, motor vehicle thefts, vandalism, and the total count of crimes. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets of crimes reported in 11 U.S. cities demonstrated that the proposed framework achieves an accuracy of 73% and 77% when predicting property crimes and violent crimes, respectively. The WRF-Solar Ensemble Prediction System (WRF-Solar EPS) and a calibration method, the analog ensemble (AnEn), are used to generate calibrated gridded ensemble forecasts of solar irradiance over the contiguous United States (CONUS). Global horizontal irradiance (GHI) and direct normal irradiance (DNI) retrievals, based on geostationary satellites from the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB) are used for both calibrating and verifying the day-ahead GHI and DNI predictions (GDIP). A 10-member ensemble of WRF-Solar EPS is run in a re-forecast mode to generate day-ahead GDIP for three years. The AnEn is used to calibrate GDIP at each grid point independently using the NSRDB as the "ground truth". Performance evaluations of deterministic and probabilistic attributes are carried out over the whole CONUS. The results demonstrate that using the AnEn calibrated ensemble forecast from WRF-Solar EPS contributes to improving the overall quality of the GHI predictions with respect to an AnEn calibrated system based only on the deterministic run of WRF-Solar. In fact, the calibrated WRF-Solar EPS's mean exhibits a lower bias and RMSE than the calibrated deterministic WRF-Solar. Moreover, using the ensemble mean and spread as predictors for the AnEn allows a more effective calibration than using variables only from the deterministic runs. Finally, it has been shown that the recently introduced algorithm of correction for rare events is of paramount importance to obtain the lowest values of GHI from the calibrated ensemble (WRF-Solar EPS AnEn), qualitatively consistent with those observed from the NSRDB. Since May 2022, over 64,000 Monkeypox cases have been confirmed globally up until September 2022. The United States leads the world in cases, with over 25,000 cases nationally. This recent escalation of the Monkeypox outbreak has become a severe and urgent worldwide public health concern. We aimed to develop an efficient forecasting tool that allows health experts to implement effective prevention policies for Monkeypox and shed light on the case development of diseases that share similar characteristics to Monkeypox. This research utilized five machine learning models, namely, ARIMA, LSTM, Prophet, NeuralProphet, and a stacking model, on the Monkeypox datasets from the CDC official website to forecast the next 7-day trend of Monkeypox cases in the United States. The result showed that NeuralProphet achieved the most optimal performance with a RMSE of 49.27 and R 2 of 0.76. Further, the final trained NeuralProphet was employed to forecast seven days of out-of-sample cases. On the basis of cases, our model demonstrated 95% accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New York state is among the largest producers of table beets in the United States, which, by extension, has placed a new focus on precision crop management. For example, an operational unmanned aerial system (UAS)-based yield forecasting tool could prove helpful for the efficient management and harvest scheduling of crops for factory feedstock. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of predicting the weight of table beet roots from spectral and textural features, obtained from hyperspectral images collected via UAS. We identified specific wavelengths with significant predictive ability, e.g., we down-select >200 wavelengths to those spectral indices sensitive to root yield (weight per unit length). Multivariate linear regression was used, and the accuracy and precision were evaluated at different growth stages throughout the season to evaluate temporal plasticity. Models at each growth stage exhibited similar results (albeit with different wavelength indices), with the LOOCV (leave-one-out cross-validation) R2 ranging from 0.85 to 0.90 and RMSE of 10.81–12.93% for the best-performing models in each growth stage. Among visible and NIR spectral regions, the 760–920 nm-wavelength region contained the most wavelength indices highly correlated with table beet root yield. The sudden onset of the COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges for forecasting professionals worldwide. This article examines the early forecasts of COVID-19 transmission, using the context of the United States, one of the early epicenters of the crisis. The article compares the relative accuracy of selected models from two forecasters who informed government policy in the first three months of the pandemic, the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) and Columbia University. Furthermore, we examine whether the forecasts improved as more data became available in the subsequent months of the pandemic, using the forecasts from Los Alamos National Laboratory and the University of Texas, Austin. The analysis focuses on mortality estimates and compares forecasts using epidemiological and curve-fitting models during the first wave of the pandemic from March 2020 to October 2020. As health agencies worldwide struggled with uncertainty in models and projections of COVID-19 caseload and mortality, this article provides important insights that can be useful for crafting policy responses to the ongoing pandemic and future outbreaks. Organizations with large facility and infrastructure portfolios have used asset management databases for over ten years to collect and standardize asset condition data. Decision makers use these data to predict asset degradation and expected service life, enabling prioritized maintenance, repair, and renovation actions that reduce asset life-cycle costs and achieve organizational objectives. However, these asset condition forecasts are calculated using standardized, self-correcting distribution models that rely on poorly-fit, continuous functions. This research presents four stepwise asset condition forecast models that utilize historical asset inspection data to improve prediction accuracy: (1) Slope, (2) Weighted Slope, (3) Condition-Intelligent Weighted Slope, and (4) Nearest Neighbor. Model performance was evaluated against BUILDER SMS, the industry-standard asset management database, using data for five roof types on 8549 facilities across 61 U.S. military bases within the United States. The stepwise Weighted Slope model more accurately predicted asset degradation 92% of the time, as compared to the industry standard's continuous self-correcting prediction model. These results suggest that using historical condition data, alongside or in-place of manufacturer expected service life, may increase the accuracy of degradation and failure prediction models. Additionally, as data quantity increases over time, the models presented are expected to improve prediction skills. It is challenging to obtain accurate and efficient predictions in short-term load forecasting (STLF) systems due to the complexity and nonlinearity of the electric load signals. To address these problems, we propose a hybrid predictive model that includes a sliding-window algorithm, a stacking ensemble neural network, and a similar-days predictive method. First, we leverage a sliding-window algorithm to process the time-series electric load data with high nonlinearity and non-stationarity. Second, we propose an ensemble learning scheme of stacking neural networks to improve forecasting performance. Specifically, the stacking neural networks contain two types of networks: the base-layer and the meta-layer networks. During the pre-training process, the base-layer network integrates a radial basis function (RBF), random vector functional link (RVFL), and backpropagation neural network (BPNN) to provide a robust predictive model. The meta-layer network utilizes a deep belief network (DBN) and the improved broad learning system (BLS) to enhance predictive accuracy. Finally, the similar-days prediction method is developed to extract the relationship of electric load data in different time dimensions, further enhancing the robustness and accuracy of the model. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our model, it is evaluated using real data from five regions of the United States in three consecutive years. We compare our method with several state-of-the-art and conventional neural-network-based models. Our proposed algorithm improves the prediction accuracy by 16.08%, 16.83%, and 22.64% compared to DWT-EMD-RVFL, SWT-LSTM, and EMD-BLS, respectively. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States, accounting for 602,350 deaths in 2020. Cancer-related death rates have declined by 27% over the past two decades, partially due to the identification of novel anti-cancer drugs. Despite improvements in cancer treatment, newly approved oncology drugs are associated with increased toxicity risk. These toxicities may be mitigated by pharmacokinetic optimization and reductions in off-target interactions. As such, there is a need for early-stage implementation of pharmacokinetic (PK) prediction tools. Several PK prediction platforms exist, including pkCSM, SuperCypsPred, Pred-hERG, Similarity Ensemble Approach (SEA), and SwissADME. These tools can be used in screening hits, allowing for the selection of compounds were reduced toxicity and/or risk of attrition. In this short commentary, we used PK prediction tools in the optimization of mitogen activated extracellular signal-related kinase kinase 1 (MEK1) inhibitors. In doing so, we identified MEK1 inhibitors with retained activity and optimized predictive PK properties, devoid of hERG inhibition. Research on forecasting the seasonality and growth trend of natural gas (NG) production and consumption will help organize an analysis base for NG inspection and development, social issues, and allow industrials elements to operate effectively and reduce economic issues. In this situation, we handle a comparison structure on the application of different models in monthly NG production and consumption forecasting using the cross-correlation function and then analyze the association between exogenous variables. Moreover, the SARIMA-X model is tested for US monthly NG production and consumption prediction via the proposed method for the first time in the literature review in this study. The performance of that model has been compared with SARIMA (p, d, q) * (P, D, Q)s. The results from RMSE and MAPE indicate that the superiority of the best model. By applying this method, the US monthly NG production and consumption is forecast until 2025. The success of the proposed method allows the use of seasonality patterns. If this seasonal approach continues, the United States' NG production (16%) and consumption (24%) are expected to increase by 2025. The results of this study provide effective information for decision-makers on NG production and consumption to be credible and to determine energy planning and future sustainable energy policies. A task for environmental health research is to produce complete pollution exposure maps despite limited monitoring data. Satellite-derived aerosol optical depth (AOD) is frequently used as a predictor in various models to improve PM2.5 estimation, despite significant gaps in coverage. We analyze PM2.5 and AOD from July 2011 in the contiguous United States. We examine two methods to aid in gap-filling AOD: (1) lattice kriging, a spatial statistical method adapted to handle large amounts data, and (2) random forest, a tree-based machine learning method. First, we evaluate each model's performance in the spatial prediction of AOD, and we additionally consider ensemble methods for combining the predictors. In order to accurately assess the predictive performance of these methods, we construct spatially clustered holdouts to mimic the observed patterns of missing data. Finally, we assess whether gap-filling AOD through one of the proposed ensemble methods can improve prediction of PM2.5 in a random forest model. Our results suggest that ensemble methods of combining lattice kriging and random forest can improve AOD gap-filling. Based on summary metrics of performance, PM2.5 predictions based on random forest models were largely similar regardless of the inclusion of gap-filled AOD, but there was some variability in daily model predictions. Simple Summary: Cancer prevalence estimates are used to guide policymaking, from prevention to screening programs. However, these data are only available for 28% of the U.S. population. We used deep learning to analyze satellite imagery in order to predict cancer prevalence with a high spatial resolution. This method explained up to 64.37% of the variation of cancer prevalence. It could potentially be used to map cancer prevalence in entire regions for which these estimates are currently unavailable. The worldwide growth of cancer incidence can be explained in part by changes in the prevalence and distribution of risk factors. There are geographical gaps in the estimates of cancer prevalence, which could be filled with innovative methods. We used deep learning (DL) features extracted from satellite images to predict cancer prevalence at the census tract level in seven cities in the United States. We trained the model using detailed cancer prevalence estimates from 2018 available in the CDC (Center for Disease Control) 500 Cities project. Data from 3500 census tracts covering 14,483,366 inhabitants were included. Features were extracted from 170,210 satellite images with deep learning. This method explained up to 64.37% (median = 43.53%) of the variation of cancer prevalence. Satellite features are highly correlated with individual socioeconomic and health measures that are linked to cancer prevalence (age, smoking and drinking status, and obesity). A higher similarity between two environments is associated with better generalization of the model (p = 1.10–6). Italian ryegrass (Lolium perenne ssp. multiflorum (Lam) Husnot) is a troublesome weed species in wheat (Triticum aestivum) production in the United States, severely affecting grain yields. Spatial mapping of ryegrass infestation in wheat fields and early prediction of its impact on yield can assist management decision making. In this study, unmanned aerial systems (UAS)-based red, green and blue (RGB) imageries acquired at an early wheat growth stage in two different experimental sites were used for developing predictive models. Deep neural networks (DNNs) coupled with an extensive feature selection method were used to detect ryegrass in wheat and estimate ryegrass canopy coverage. Predictive models were developed by regressing early-season ryegrass canopy coverage (%) with end-of-season (at wheat maturity) biomass and seed yield of ryegrass, as well as biomass and grain yield reduction (%) of wheat. Italian ryegrass was detected with high accuracy (precision = 95.44 ± 4.27%, recall = 95.48 ± 5.05%, F-score = 95.56 ± 4.11%) using the best model which included four features: hue, saturation, excess green index, and visible atmospheric resistant index. End-of-season ryegrass biomass was predicted with high accuracy (R2 = 0.87), whereas the other variables had moderate to high accuracy levels (R2 values of 0.74 for ryegrass seed yield, 0.73 for wheat biomass reduction, and 0.69 for wheat grain yield reduction). The methodology demonstrated in the current study shows great potential for mapping and quantifying ryegrass infestation and predicting its competitive response in wheat, allowing for timely management decisions. Precipitation estimates from numerical weather prediction (NWP) models are uncertain. The uncertainties can be reduced by integrating precipitation observations into NWP models. This study assimilates Version 04 Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) (IMERG) Final Run into the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model data assimilation (WRFDA) system using a four-dimensional variational (4D-Var) method. Three synoptic-scale convective precipitation events over the central United States during 2015–2017 are used as case studies. To investigate the effect of logarithmically transformed IMERG precipitation in the WRFDA system, this study reports on several experiments with six-hour and hourly assimilation windows, regular (nontransformed) and logarithmically transformed observations, and a constant observation error in regular and logarithmic spaces. Results show that hourly assimilation windows improve precipitation simulations significantly compared to six-hour windows. Logarithmically transformed precipitation does not improve precipitation estimations relative to nontransformed precipitation. However, better predictions of heavy precipitation can be achieved with a constant error in the logarithmic space (corresponding to a linearly increasing error in the regular space), which modifies the threshold of rejecting observations, and thus utilizes more observations. The widespread increase in global temperature is driving more frequent and more severe local heatwaves within the contiguous United States (CONUS). General circulation models (GCMs) show increasing, but spatially uneven trends in heatwave properties. However, the wide range of model outputs raises the question of the suitability of this method for indicating the future impacts of heatwaves on human health and well-being. This work examines the fitness of 32 models from CMIP5 and their ensemble median to predict a set of heatwave descriptors across the CONUS, by analyzing their capabilities in the simulation of historical heatwaves during 1950–2005. Then, we use a multi-criteria decision-making tool and rank the overall performance of each model for 10 locations with different climates. We found GCMs have different capabilities in the simulation of historical heatwave characteristics. In addition, we observed similar performances for GCMs over the areas with a partially similar climate. The ensemble model showed better performance in simulation of historical heatwave intensity in some locations, while other individual GCMs represented heatwave time-related components more similar to observations. I analyze damage from hurricane strikes on the United States since 1955. Using machine learning methods to select the most important drivers for damage, I show that large errors in a hurricane's predicted landfall location result in higher damage. This relationship holds across a wide range of model specifications and when controlling for ex-ante uncertainty and potential endogeneity. Using a counterfactual exercise I find that the cumulative reduction in damage from forecast improvements since 1970 is about $82 billion, which exceeds the U.S. government's spending on the forecasts and private willingness to pay for them.
