Blending green hydrogen within the gas infrastructure is seen as the first move towards Europe's climate neutrality by 2050. Especially, Europe and North African have privileged role in energy cooperation sharing a woven and complex set of natural resources, knowledge, infrastructure, clear goals towards sustainable development. Developing common projects about hydrogen can mutually help both Europe and North Africa to achieve more sustainable, reliable and modern energy systems. This paper simulates the Greenstream gas corridor (connecting Libya to Italy) under increasing hydrogen blending scenarios using a transient and multi-component fluid-dynamic model of the gas transmission system. The additional compression energy required and the compressors' operating hours are evaluated under the hypothesis that the energy content of the transported gas is maintained. The hydrogen profiles needed to generate the blends are obtained and used to optimally size a photovoltaic-powered electrolysis system, minimizing the compressed hydrogen storage. The results indicate that the additional energy costs of transporting hydrogen blends are up to 32.5% higher than natural gas transport, while negligibly impacting the overall efficiency of energy transport. This paper presents the results of excavations conducted at the Late Gravettian site of Lubná VI in 2012 and 2018. This site is an exceptional example of a short-term Late Gravettian campsite, occupied between 27.5 and 27.1 ka cal BP. Due to the specific location of this site, in an area situated far from lithic raw material sources, the archaeological remains offer a rare possibility to understand the subsistence strategy of highly mobile hunter-gatherers in the Late Pleistocene. The knapped lithic assemblage is composed of erratic Cretaceous flint imported over long distances, and the tool inventory is typical of Late Gravettian assemblages from Central Europe, with a dominance of burins and backed implements. However, the lack of chert and flint raw material in the vicinity of the site inspired the occupants to use bladelet blanks to make hunting weaponry from burin spalls. This specific behaviour is unique among Gravettian inventories known from the western Carpathians. Reindeer dominate the faunal assemblage over other species. The season of occupation at Lubná VI was probably early autumn, and may be associated with the maximum use of environmental resources by the hunter-gatherers. The small campsite was located at a convenient spot for processing reindeer carcasses, where some hearth stone constructions were arranged. Because there was no woody vegetation in the closest vicinity of the site, reindeer bones and fat were used as fuel in hearths. Given the lack of nearby flint raw materials, the accessibility of large numbers of reindeer near Lubná, probably present on a seasonal basis, explains the occurrence of Late Gravettian occupation in this micro-region. The United States Essential Air Service (EAS) programme and Europe's imposition of Public Service Obligation (PSO) air services are nationally funded and intended to increase access to remote areas. In 2018, the programmes together, involved subsidy payments in excess of US$590 million. Applying a generalized travel-cost-based methodology, this paper analyses to what extent 264 subsidized air services in 12 countries contribute to the locational accessibility of remote regions. It also assesses the routes' viability in the presence of transport alternatives at nearby airports. The results indicate that the accessibility contributions of subsidized services vary considerably across countries. More than 45 routes are identified for which no measurable accessibility improvements are found. In total, only 15% of all services appear to yield accessibility contributions sufficient to justify the corresponding subsidies. Policy recommendations based on unit labour costs (ULC) indices can lead to undesirable and counterproductive policies, because they do not reveal possible distortions in the base year. In this paper, we discuss the problems with the ULC-current account relation and provide an alternative measure for relative wage costs called Wage Competitive index (WCI) based on the assumption of convergence of the returns on capital. We show how to calculate it and that it is more efficient than traditional ULC and REER indicators. The implication is that policymakers should not focus on nominal wage setting only, but also more broadly on all factors which affect the return on capital. This implies that the well-known Rehn – Meidner rule , which underlies the Macroeconomic Dialogue should be modified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The role of environmental change in the evolution of cultural traits is a topic of long-standing scientific debate with strongly contrasting views. Major obstacles for assessing environmental impacts on the evolution of material culture are the fragmentary nature of archaeological and – to a somewhat lesser extent – geoscientific archives and the insufficient chronological resolution of these archives and related proxy data. Together these aspects are causing difficulties in data synchronization. By no means does this paper attempt to solve these issues, but rather aims at shifting the focus from demonstrating strict chains of causes and events to describing roughly contemporaneous developments by compiling and comparing existing evidence from archaeology and geosciences for the period between 40 and 15 ka in Central Europe. Analysis of the archaeological record identifies five instances at around 33, 29, 23.5, 19, and 16 ka, for which evidence suggests an increased speed of cultural evolution. By comparing data from different geoscientific archives, we discuss whether or not these instances have common characteristics. We stress that common characteristics per se are no proof of causality; repeated co-occurrences of certain features over long periods of time, however, suggest that certain explanations may be more plausible than others. While all five cases roughly coincide with pronounced and rapid environmental changes, it is also observed that such conditions do not necessarily trigger major changes in the material culture. Increases and decreases in the diversity of cultural traits seem to be rather correlated with the overall demographic development. In compiling and comparing our data, we also identify periods with high need and potential for future research regarding the relation between environmental change and cultural evolution. The stone hunting points have generated substantial interest and it is often used as a fossil guide to enable the identification and characterization of complex technologies or "cultures". However, the armatures remain poorly understood in Central Europe, despite various original types. This paper explains the key points from Unit K11 of Dolní Věstonice II (South Moravia, Czech Republic). The collection is not directly dated; however, through the typology, it is included in the Gravettian sensu lato. Despite the limited sample of 33 fragments of armatures, it is possible to identify recurrent features. These stone artifacts differ slightly from the other microliths of the Pavlovian sensu stricto , which are dated 27,500–25,500 uncal BP. • Targeted high-quality preschools improve development of disadvantaged children. • Little reliable evidence on benefits of universal high-quality preschools in the US. • More reliable evidence using quasi-experimental variation is available from Europe. • High-quality universal preschool benefits disadvantaged children but not more advantaged children. • The European findings have implications for US preschool policy. Public preschool programs can be universal , open to all age-eligible children, or targeted , with eligibility limited to children from lower-income families. The effects on children of targeted programs have been intensively studied in the US, with results showing substantial beneficial impacts on child development and subsequent adult outcomes for disadvantaged children. However, there is little reliable evidence on the medium and long run effects of universal preschool programs in the US. This paper reviews studies from Europe that have exploited quasi-experimental variation to estimate the causal impact of universal public preschool eligibility and enrollment on child and adult outcomes. The evidence shows that these programs provide substantial short and long run benefits to disadvantaged children, but relatively modest benefits to more advantaged children. Irrespective of initial treatment for congenital heart disease (CHD) in childhood, CHD is a lifelong condition, leaving patients at risk for complications. To support uninterrupted, age- and development-based care for young persons with CHD, guidelines and consensus papers emphasise the need for formal transition programmes, including transfer to adult CHD (ACHD) clinics. Here, we surveyed existing transfer and transition programmes in European ACHD centres. Our aims were to provide a contemporary view of transitional care for patients with CHD and to evaluate progress over the last decade. We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional survey in 96 ACHD centres in Europe. A specific survey form was developed that sampled the practices of transfer and/or transition. We used a transfer-transition index to quantify adherence to quality indicators of successful transfer and transition. Of the 96 ACHD centres, 40 (41.7%) offered a formal transition, and 85 (88.5%) had structured transfer from paediatric to ACHD care. Although 31% of the centres performed at a 'good' level on the transfer-transition index, only 4 (4.2%) satisfied all criteria. Most centres with a transition programme offered education and support through a dedicated transition specialist, who was a master's-prepared nurse in most centres. A minority of the ACHD centres offered a flexible transition process, starting at least two years before transfer. Nearly half of the included ACHD centres offered a formal transition programme, and almost 90% offered structured transfer. Despite some improvements since 2009, most of the programmes lacked an age- and development-based approach. • The majority of CHD centres in Europe offer a structured transfer from paediatric to adult care. • Although the number of centres with formal transition increased over time, time, only a minority follows the recommendations to the fullest maximum. • All transition programmes included a dedicated transition specialist; the role is often taken up by nurses. In order to meet the increasingly complex requirements in the fields of logistics and transport, intensive development and application of intermodal transport is necessary, whereby the planning and development of efficient intermodal terminals (IT) as one of the key intermodal transport sub-systems is crucial. Accordingly, this paper deals with the definition of types of inland IT combining different structural elements and the selection of efficient terminal types (TT). For solving this problem, a novel approach for defining the types of inland IT and a hybrid model for evaluating their efficiency are developed in this paper. The model combines the fuzzy EDAS (Evaluation Based on Distance from Average Solution) method of multi-criteria decision-making, used for defining the input weight limits based on the requirements of the stakeholders, and the AR DEA (Assurance Region Data Envelopment Analysis) non-parametric method, used for evaluating the efficiency of the types of inland IT. The applicability of the proposed model is demonstrated by solving the problem of selecting the efficient TTs in the group of "small" inland ITs, based on the analysis of real ITs in Europe. For the most efficient TT, the "small" inland road-rail hub terminal, mainly performing basic, supplementary and accompanying functions, is selected. The selected TT represent the benchmark for the other ITs that have the potential to develop into them and become the important elements in the development of the transport networks, regionalization of the ports and geographic expansion of their hinterlands, which are the key initiators of the regions' macro-economic development. (a) To provide a state-of-the-art critical review of European dual career (DC) research (2015–2018, English language), (b) to position the current DC (psychological) research within the athlete career sport psychology discourse and within the European DC discourse, and (c) to identify research gaps and future challenges. These objectives were formulated after an appraisal of nine existing review-type papers contributed to the European DC discourse. This review has been informed by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta Analyses (Moher, Liberati, Tetzlaff, Altman, & The PRISMA group, 2010) and recommendations on presenting results of the state-of-the-art critical review by Grant and Booth (2009). Following an extensive literature search across several databases, 42 research papers were used for appraisal, synthesis, and critical analysis of the current DC research. Major tenets of the cultural praxis of athletes' careers (Stambulova & Ryba, 2013a , b ; 2014) were used as a critical lens in the analysis. DC research contributes to and connects the European DC discourse and the athlete career sport psychology discourse. DC in sport and work, DC "costs", DC development environments, DC athletes' mental health and well-being, DC support and training of the support providers constitute the major gaps in current DC research. Filling these gaps presents future challenges for DC research to adequately support practice and policy making within the European DC discourse. • Forty two peer-reviewed dual career (DC) articles from 2015–18 were reviewed. • Mapping and narrative syntheses revealed progress and gaps in current DC research. • Tenets of cultural praxis of athletes' careers were used as a lens for critical reflections. • European DC discourse and athlete career (psychology) discourse were found to overlap. • DC term has been established, and a holistic lifespan perspective informed most studies. A summary of published and unpublished data on the stratigraphy of the late Early Pleistocene (Eopleistocene) of the Southern Urals region is presented in this paper. The summary follows previous reviews about the characteristics of the Pleistocene deposits of the easternmost part of Europe. The improvement and unification of the regional Quaternary stratigraphic scheme is the main aim of these investigations. In this paper we describe deposits of different origin, which constitute the regional stratigraphic units (Tyulyan, Raevka, Udryak, Khlebodarovka, Dombarovka, Blagovar and Oktyabrsky Horizons), are characterized. During the late Early Pleistocene (Eopleistocene), the Southern Fore-Urals region was characterized by continental climate conditions and by four phases of incisions of the hydrographic network that were related to regional uplift, as well as to the lowering of the base level and the subsequent regression of the Late Akchagylian Sea. Fossil molluscs, ostracods, mammals and pollen are used for the reconstruction of the palaeoenvironmental conditions and the biostratigraphical positions of the main localities. During Raevka, Khlebodarovka and Blagovar times, the climate was cool, and forest-steppe landscapes with prevalent open spaces existed. The climate during the Tyulyan, Udryak, and Dombarovka and Oktyabrsky times was warm, and during these periods, the areas of deciduous and coniferous forests expanded in the forest-steppes. The molluscan fauna of the Early Eopleistocene was a transitional fauna from the Pliocene to the Quaternary because the wet and warm climate, which was favourable to the Pliocene mollusc species, continued in the Southern Fore-Urals during the Early Eopleistocene. The mammalian assemblages are the basis for the biostratigraphical subdivision. The deposits are biostratigraphically correlated to the Lower Eopleistocene on the basis of the appearance of the first unrooted voles Allophaiomys and Prolagurus together with late species of the Mimomys genus. At the end of the Eopleistocene, the unrooted voles Terricola and Lagurina were numerous , the first Microtus appeared , late species of Mimomys were not numerous, and Archidiskodon trogontherii appeared in the mammal faunas of the region. The small mammals of the Tyulyan and Udryak times represent the Odessa faunal assemblage. The mammal fauna of the Oktyabrsky time corresponds to the Tiraspol faunal assemblage. The units are correlated with the Upper Villafranchian – Galerian stages interval in the Western European stratigraphical timescale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Paediatric and adolescent gynaecology is a special field of interest within general gynaecology and obstetrics. The care for children and young people differs from adults. In gynaecology, children should not be treated like little adults. Within Europe, there is great variability in the provision of care, availability of clinical networks and lack of national standards within paediatric and adolescent gynaecology. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the current evidence regarding best clinical practice within Europe.Methods: A search was performed in Embase and Medline from 1974 onwards. Inclusion criteria were paediatric and adolescent population, gynaecology or reproductive health, care provision and evidence based clinical guidelines. In most papers recommendations were made, so no outcome measures could be used. It was, therefore, not possible to perform a meta-analysis. The risk of bias of the studies was assessed according to the GRADE and AGREE-2 guidelines.Results: 91 papers were identified and a total of 7 papers were included in the final analysis. The main recommendations are: - improvement for accessibility for healthcare facility, - training of healthcare staff in communication and examination according to developmental age, - develop evidence based clinical guidelines and standardize content of care delivered, - add training in general adolescent topics to training curriculum of paediatric and adolescent gynaecology.Conclusion and Implications: There is limited information about best clinical practice and low quality of evidence of healthcare service available in the field of Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology. As a result there is a need to refine standards of training and care. EURAPAG should encourage adaptation of the unified standards of care in each European country. Furthermore, at this moment, there is insufficient inclusion of curriculum related to PAG in the undergraduate and post graduate training for recognition of patterns and symptoms in young women. EURAPAG should not only take a lead to develop common curriculum for undergraduate and post graduate education and training to address this unmet need but should also lead on their implementation within Europe. Abstract The increasing global demand for food and the environmental effects of reactive nitrogen losses in the food production chain, increase the need for efficient use of nitrogen (N). Of N harvested in agricultural plant products, 80% is used to feed livestock. Because the largest atmospheric loss of reactive nitrogen from livestock production systems is ammonia (NH 3), the focus of this paper is on N lost as NH 3 during the production of animal protein. The focus of this paper is to understand the key factors explaining differences in Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) of animal production among various European countries. Therefore we developed a conceptual framework to describe the NUE defined as the amount of animal-protein N per N in feed and NH 3 N losses in the production of milk, beef, pork, chicken meat and eggs in The Netherlands, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Germany, Austria and Denmark. The framework describes how manure management and animal-related parameters (feed, metabolism) relate to NH 3 emissions and NUE. The results showed that the animal product with the lowest NUE had the largest NH 3 emissions and vice versa, which agrees with the reciprocal relationship between NUE and NH 3 within the conceptual framework. Across animal products for the countries considered, about 20% of the N in feed is lost as NH 3. The significant smallest proportion (12%) of NH 3 N per unit of N feed is from chicken production. The proportions for other products are 17%, 19%, 20% and 22% for milk, pork, eggs and beef respectively. These differences were not significantly different due to the differences among countries. For all countries, NUE was lowest for beef and highest for chicken. The production of 1 kg N in beef required about 5 kg N in feed, of which 1 kg N was lost as NH 3 N. For the production of 1 kg N in chicken meat, 2 kg N in feed was required and 0.2 kg was lost as NH 3. The production of 1 kg N in milk required 4 kg N in feed with 0.6 kg NH 3 N loss, the same as pork and eggs, but those needed 3 and 3.5 kg N in feed per kg N in product respectively. Except for beef, the differences among these European countries were mainly caused by differences in manure management practices and their emission factors, rather than by animal-related factors including feed and digestibility influencing the excreted amount of ammoniacal N (TAN). For beef, both aspects caused important differences. Based on the results, we encourage the expression of N losses as per N in feed or per N in product, in addition to per animal place, when comparing production efficiency and NUE. We consider that disaggregating emission factors into a diet/animal effect and a manure management effect would improve the basis for comparing national NH 3 emission inventories. A substantially updated version of the correlation table showing chronostratigraphical subdivisions of late Cenozoic geological time, spanning the last 2.7 million years is presented. It provides scientists, students, professionals and the general public with a ready reference to stratigraphical terms and schemes in use in different areas for similar periods. The updates comprised the status of Quaternary chronostratigraphic subdivision, the combined age-modelled geomagnetic and isotope records from ocean drilling records, and revised regional correlation schemes, notably for eastern Europe. The paper describes the chart in its 2019 QI-500 form and contains sections on its types of usage and formal subdivision status, besides reference and description of the contents of the various columns. Abstract The environmental context of cultural transformation' - frames the central issue of this paper – how were Neolithic and Chalcolithic landscapes in the Aegean, Balkan and Carpathian (ABC) zones shaped and transformed by climatic and anthropogenic impacts? The difficulties in interpreting proxy records for the middle, transitional stage of the Holocene aridification sequence, falling between the early wet stage and the late arid stage, have been created by the conjoint influence of two kinds of impact – climatic and anthropogenic. An unhelpful influence in this debate stems from Willis and Bennett's (1994) hypothesis of minimal human impact on the pre-Bronze Age landscapes of South East Europe. In this paper, two questions are posed: (1) what were the effects of the claimed global changes in Holocene climate at the regional and local scale in the ABC zones?; and (2) can we recognise human impact in these proxy records prior to the Bronze Age of our study regions? Following a discussion of general long-term climatic trends and RCCs (episodes of rapid climatic change), I base a discussion of the so-called 8200BP 'event' and pre-Bronze Age human impacts on a suite of 24 well-dated proxy records – mostly pollen sequences. The principal findings are that there is little evidence for impact from the 8200BP 'event' in these records, while there is substantial evidence for pre-Bronze Age human impacts on the landscapes of the Aegean, Balkan and Carpathian regions. European policy makers have shown a keen interest in the success of 5G because ubiquitous and high capacity electronic communication infrastructure is recognized as a cornerstone of economic development and productivity growth. The second generation, GSM, is considered the leading example, reaching its peak of deployment in 2015 with 3.83 billion subscribers served by over 700 operators in 219 countries and territories. With 5G rapidly shaping up in the R&D and standardization environments, and a call for leadership with 5G in Europe by policy makers, it is timely to investigate what lessons can be learned from the success of 2G that can be applied to 5G. More broadly, this calls for research into the commonalities and differences between successive generations of mobile technology, their introduction and the market adoption that followed. This also calls for an investigation into the possibility of multiple futures of 5G and how that impacts the opportunity for leadership. As one future may be more desirable than the other, depending on the perspective of the actor involved, a policy debate will be required to determine the most desirable future. As well as a discussion of the policy and regulatory actions required to enable a particular future. Hence, the two-part research question being addressed in this paper is: What explains the success of 2G-GSM and how can it be applied to create success with 5G in the European Union ? To respond to the research question this paper first identifies the leadership lessons to be drawn from the success of 2G-GSM in relation to its successors 3G and 4G. Secondly, the contribution describes two stylized images of possible futures of 5G, called “Evolution” and “Revolution”, as input to the policy debate on the options for leadership with 5G. These images reflect two extremes in terms of possible futures of 5G. “Evolution” follows the pattern of previous generations and current trends. “Revolution” represents a clear break with these trends and a path towards leadership with 5G, as it exploits the opportunities of standardized APIs for service creation, being enabled by network virtualization as an architectural foundation of 5G. These open and uniformly applied APIs allow the market entry of a multitude of virtual mobile network operators (VMNOs) serving particular industry verticals or economic sectors with tailored feature sets and qualities of services. Mental health disorders (MHD) in elite athletes is a topic that has received increased attention in recent years. The overall aim of this position statement is to enhance awareness of this important topic and to critically discuss optimal service provision for athletes who suffer from MHD. In the first part of the paper a short overview of the research on MHD in elite athletes is provided. Elite athletes seem to have comparable prevalence rates for the most common MHD when compared to non-athletic peers, but there are still many disorders that have not been investigated in athletes. Sport specific situations such as injuries, periods of overtraining and career termination may put athletes at an increased risk of developing MHD. In the second part of the paper, models of service provision for elite athletes suffering from MHD from six European countries are presented, focusing on 1) professional service providers, 2) support systems, 3) diagnostic assessment, 4) clinical treatment, 5) performance during treatment, 6) screening, and 7) education systems. It emerges that competencies, certification issues, and professional boundaries of the involved service providers, as well as the structure of the National Health Care systems differ strongly across European countries, which makes defining a golden standard difficult. In the third part of this paper, the authors provide general recommendations for athletes and coaches, clubs, federations, organizations and scholars that hopefully will inspire stakeholders to optimize their support systems. The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is a voluntary Regulation that defines the European Environmental Management System (EMS). Today the EMAS is undergoing a revision process, in order to fit the scheme to organizations and stakeholders’ requirements and increase its diffusion. Italy accounts for roughly 1,000 of the 4,000 certified European organizations and, especially during the last five years, a growing number of organizations have not renewed the certification. Thus, the aim of the survey is to investigate why many Italian organizations have dropped out of EMAS, and to identify which enabling measures would be more effective in order to encourage organizations to move back to the certification. The target of the questionnaire were the 339 Italian organizations that did not renew their EMAS registration between 2010 and 2015, and respondents were 99. In the first part of the paper, we present the general findings, while in the second one, certified Public Administrations and private-owned organizations are compared in order to delineate significant differences between the two groups. Concerning motivations for not renewing EMAS, implementation costs were the key reasons for both groups. Conversely, considering the possible enabling measures, while private-owned organizations demand long term tax benefits, Public Administrations prefer a greater consideration of EMAS in public funding. This paper systematically addresses this phenomenon through a survey, contributing to reduce the existing gap in literature and providing a useful input to decision-makers who are overseeing the EMAS revision process. Some recent European research claims that immigrants settle in urban areas with low scores on level-of-living conditions and a high prevalence of health-risk factors, and that these settlement patterns adversely affect their health. Other studies question the association between immigrant segregation and area deprivation on one hand, and negative health outcomes on the other hand, and identify possible beneficial effects of segregation, specifically the ethnic density effect . This paper aims to explore the possible ethnic density effect among refugees, a sub-population that often appears relatively vulnerable compared with immigrants in general. The data comprise 30 871 individuals, aged 20–69, with an (post-1989) officially registered refugee status from six major countries, including Vietnam, Somalia, Iran, Iraq, Sri Lanka and Bosnia. Two outcomes are analysed, covering the 2008–2011 period – the probability of being admitted at least once to a mental health institution and the number of bed days during that period. The results show that all immigrant clusters have relatively high concentrations of negative level-of-living conditions. Despite this finding, refugees living in clusters tend to have less use of mental healthcare services. The results suggest that for most refugee groups, living in clusters has positive health outcomes. Many countries use settlement policies to direct the inflow of refugees away from immigrant-dense areas. Norway's settlement policy is no exception, aiming at a geographic dispersal of refugees to avoid the emergence of socially segregated urban ethnic communities. • The CNOSSOS-EU method is not presently accurate for the assessment of railway noise, perhaps due to the contention that CNOSSOS-EU input values are limited and of variable quality [1]. • Acoustic modelling using the previously applied interim calculation method RMR-1996 compared to the new CNOSSOS-EU methodology produced estimates suggesting that 91,692 more persons may experience exposure to railway noise > 55 dB(A) L den . • Reviews should be conducted in respective EU nations, and a nationally applicable rail vehicle XML catalogue should be created to best represent national fleets in their entirety, and as recommended by the EU in the END. Since December 2018 a harmonised approach for the assessment of transportation noise, known as CNOSSOS-EU, became obligatory for EU Member States in the calculation of strategic noise mapping. This paper provides an assessment of rail-based environmental noise in Ireland via a comparative analysis of acoustic modelling for rail sources in the Irish context by comparing the CNOSSOS-EU method and the previously utilised interim method RMR-1996 with field measurements. The paper also presents comparative estimates of population exposure calculated using CNOSSOS-EU and RMR-1996. It was found that the results generated by the CNOSSOS-EU model were closer to field measurements when compared to the RMR-1996 model. Noise modelling also indicated that populations estimated to be exposed to levels of railway noise > 55 dB(A) generated by the national rail fleet were higher using CNOSSOS-EU (i.e. 91,692 more persons) relative to the RMR-1996 method. Rail noise generated by the Luas tram rail network generated marginally less population exposure for railway noise > 55 dB(A) (i.e. 2,905 less persons) relative to RMR-1996. As such, the paper contributes to the assessment of the new CNOSSOS-EU model for rail in the EU and addresses the relative lack of research focusing on rail modelling and population exposure estimation under the END. This paper examines the effect of spectators on women's football games. COVID-19 and related restrictions provide a unique opportunity with an adequate sample size to test the effect of lockdown on sports activities. Studies have recently exploited this opportunity for men's football to better understand the potential causes of home advantage and, more specifically, assess the psychological consequences when matches are played without supporters. Despite the increased scientific interest, there was only one paper that focused on women's football. Therefore, we aim to contribute to this research field by considering matches from four major European women's football leagues. The findings suggest that for three of these leagues, lockdown has a statistically significant effect on the sanctioned yellow cards by either reducing the number of yellow cards sanctioned to the away teams or increasing the number of yellow cards sanctioned to the home teams. Nonetheless, lockdown does not affect any final match outcomes; therefore, it does not significantly affect the magnitude of home advantage for women's games. • Referreing activities and home advantage of women's football for pre- and post-COVID-19 periods are investigated. • Lockdown does not affect the magnitude of home advantage for women's football. • Sanctioned yellow cards are significantly affected by lockdown in line with the literature for men's football. • Huge amounts of explosive remnants of war represent a unique and complex risk. • The current risk management approach is considered inappropriate. • Directives and regulations prohibit the use of more relevant methodologies. • This paper provides recommendations on revising existing risk assessment standards. For many countries, the legacy of armed conflict in the form of unexploded ordnance has a severe impact on society and daily life, as millions of tonnes of explosive remnants of war represent a grave threat to both the environment and societal safety and security. Recent and dramatic changes in the security situation in Europe sadly demonstrate that explosive remnants of war are not, however, only a thing of the past. This makes it especially relevant to evaluate how we assess and manage this risk today and how, if possible, this practice could be improved. In the present paper, we will outline some of the particularities that differentiate risk assessments of unexploded ordnance from other, more familiar, risks and discuss whether the current methodology can be considered relevant and appropriate. We find that the different risk assessment methodologies generally in use today, as described in applicable guidelines and regulations, are principally unsuitable for this use and, in addition, sometimes also ambiguous, inconsistent and incompatible. In particular, we find that any model based on a risk assessment that does not include an evaluation of background knowledge and associated uncertainties cannot be regarded as an optimal or appropriate risk assessment tool, when assessing a risk typically characterized by high complexity and uncertainty. The conclusion of this investigation is that the current risk assessment methodology for assessing risks related to unexploded ordnance and explosive remnants of war urgently needs to be revised, in order to improve the decision-making basis. The paper builds on the Environmental Kuznets Curve framework and leverages satellite data to build a set of environmental indicators as varied and as granular as possible. Evidence suggests that European cities are, on average, on track to sustainable development, meaning that the contribution of their economic growth to environmental degradation is already negative or close to becoming so. The paper also examines Transnational City Networks as accelerators of environmental transition. From the beginning of the 1990s, different types of quality management and evaluation systems have become integrated into higher education institutes throughout Europe due to the creation of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). This has meant that the university libraries have had to learn how to evaluate their services and improve their quality. Quality audits are one tool that can be used in quality management approaches to assess how well an organization is being managed. This paper describes and benchmarks the use of external and internal auditing in three European academic libraries, i.e. the Medical Library of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (Germany), the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Library (Spain) and the University of Eastern Finland Library (Finland). The results reveal the best practices of auditing in these institutions; and recommendations are provided for the further development of library auditing and ways to improve co-operation between libraries. The development of human papillomavirus (HPV)-based screening should detect more pre-cancerous changes and so reduce the incidence and mortality from cervical squamous carcinoma and cervical adenocarcinoma. However, many more women are high risk HPV (hrHPV) screen positive compared to cytology-based screening, especially in younger age-women. A variety of tests have become available which may triage into those hrHPV test-positive women who need immediate referral to colposcopy from those who need early repeat HPV tests or recall on the basis of their disease status. We performed a literature review of publications and a manual search from 2010, reporting cytology, HPV partial genotyping, dual-staining and DNA methylation for triage of hrHPV positive tests, including their comparative performance between these methods as well as the effectiveness of some triage combinations with reference to HPV-based screening services in Europe. Cost effectiveness and the structure of triage algorithms for colposcopists also have been considered. From one report evaluating four options for triage as single options or as combined algorithms, partial genotyping for HPV 16 and 18 with dual-staining yielded the highest risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade three or worse within an HPV positive population and with an acceptable colposcopy rate. From a separate paper, this option appeared cost effective. However, publications were difficult to compare objectively. All options have their merits but a combination triage involving any two of cytology, HPV partial genotyping or dual-staining seems most efficient at present. Radiation may cause long-term splenic dysfunction, risking potentially fatal late sepsis. We aimed to review this complication's magnitude in paediatric radiotherapy and gauge the level of awareness of the spleen as an organ at risk. Clinical trial protocols and radiotherapy guidelines, patient/parent information sheets, and professional guidance documents were reviewed to assess the perceived risk of radiotherapy-related splenic dysfunction. Paediatric oncologists and paediatric radiation oncologists across Europe were surveyed to estimate the level of understanding of this risk and to ascertain current practice. Spleen doses received in practice were examined. A systematic review of relevant publications was undertaken. The risk is not mentioned in most clinical trials, patient information leaflets, or professional guidance documents. When mentioned, a threshold dose of 40 Gy is cited. The survey showed only limited awareness. More than half of patients assessed received spleen doses in excess of 10 Gy. The systematic review identified one paper reporting a relative mortality risk of 5.5 with spleen doses in the 10–20 Gy range. The risk of mortality from overwhelming infection is poorly recognised. We therefore recommend routine delineation of the spleen. Protocols and guidelines should give a spleen dose objective as low as reasonably achievable, ideally mean <10 Gy without compromise to target volumes. Revised evidence-based guidelines and continuing professional development activities should inform oncologists. Patient/parent information should mention the risk and the dose received be communicated to colleagues. Antibiotic prophylaxis and/or (re)vaccination should be considered if the mean spleen dose is ≥10 Gy. • Incidental irradiation may impair splenic function in children. • This may be associated with a late risk of death due to overwhelming sepsis. • We demonstrate that this risk is not always recognised. • We make recommendations to increase awareness of the risk. • We recommend ways to mitigate this risk. • A new adjacent accumulation non-homogeneous discrete grey model is proposed. • The proposed model was superior to the other four comparative models. • The consumption of renewable energy throughout Europe and the world was predicted. In this paper, a new adjacent non-homogeneous grey model was proposed to predict renewable energy consumption in Europe. Based on the principle of adjacent accumulation, the proposed model emphasizes the weight relationship between the latest value and the historical data. Meanwhile, the heuristic algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of the proposed model. The model's performance was tested by the examples from four central European countries, including Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. Ionospheric estimation is becoming more and more important for the new multifrequency positioning algorithms, since they can help to improve greatly the convergence time for acquiring a good positioning error. In this paper, an open source tool to estimate precise ionospheric estimates is presented, namely ESA UGI (Unified-GNSS-Ionosphere). The presentation is done jointly with a methodology to test ionospheric model using a modified NeQuick to generate synthetic data. The results with different option of the ESA UGI shows that it has a good performance below 1 TECU (Total Electron Content Units) in vTEC (vertical Total Electron Content) RMS (Root Mean Squared) for European networks, around 2 TECU in a well-covered African region and between 1 and 6 TECU globally with this synthetic data. It shows as well the capability of changing between different ionosphere models (voxel, multilayer and spherical harmonics) and configuration options. Finally, a test with uncombined PPP actual data is presented showing that instantaneous convergence below 30 cm in 3D RMS position error are achievable in a well sounded area in Europe. In this paper, we present the lessons learned from a multi-method, multi-mockup probabilistic radiological characterization exercise conducted within the EU project CHANCE "Characterization of Conditioned Nuclear Waste for its Safe Disposal in Europe". A Bayesian approach that accounts for uncertainty in the measurement efficiencies is used to interpret combinations of (i) open geometry gamma spectrometry (OGGS), (ii) passive neutron coincidence counting (PNCC) and (iii) large-volume calorimetry (LVC) measurements, performed on five different combinations of mockup drum and source position. The used approach treats uncertainty in the measurement efficiencies by doing multilinear interpolation between reference efficiencies representing potential "end-member" matrices with respect to both composition and density, for the considered drum. The end-member proportions are then jointly inferred with the other unknowns. Our results indicate that the success of this method critically depends on the accuracy of the set of reference end-member efficiencies obtained from physics-based Monte Carlo particle transport modeling. We find that Bayesian inversion of OGGS data alone can recover reasonably accurate nuclide masses, with relatively high precision and low bias. Furthermore, when little prior information about the drum is available then jointly inverting OGGS and PNCC data is found to allow for a much higher precision compared to inverting OGGS data alone. In addition, calorimetry appears to be a promising method and brings some added value to OGGS as well in certain cases. In some setups and for some nuclides, errors in the reference efficiencies cause the marginal posterior distribution to be fairly biased. We thus design a simple approach to increase posterior uncertainty (that is, decrease precision) such that the true mass values are included in the bulk of the posterior distribution, in a controlled way. Ammonia is a promising alternative for the storage and transport of renewable hydrogen over long distances. In this paper, a techno-economic assessment was conducted to evaluate the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) produced from renewable ammonia feedstocks. Both thermal and electrochemical pathways were analyzed. For the thermal pathway we investigated the decomposition using fixed bed reactor and membrane technology, while alkaline electrolysis was studied for the electrochemical route. We evaluated different process scales corresponding to stationary reconversion in a hydrogen refueling station (1000 kgH 2 /day) or an ammonia import terminal (1500 tNH 3 /year) and mobile on-board reconversion for a heavy-duty truck (22 kgH 2 /day). The results show that currently the cheapest option to produce hydrogen from ammonia is the thermal decomposition with membrane technology for import terminal, fixed bed for the hydrogen refueling station, and electrolysis on-board a truck. The levelized cost of hydrogen for the thermal decomposition methods in an ammonia import terminal lie in the range of hydrogen prices produced from today's mix of renewable energy and water as feedstock in Europe. A sensitivity analysis shows that, regardless of the process scale, the parameters with the highest impact on the levelized cost of hydrogen are the reactor temperature for the membrane technology, and ammonia price for fixed bed and electrolysis technologies. The reconversion costs in the latter case are most sensitive to the cell voltage. A future scenario analysis indicates that ammonia electrolysis reconversion costs can be reduced between 14% and 44%, depending on the process scale. With increased digitalization and e-government services, Artificial Intelligence (AI) gained momentum. This paper focuses on AI-governance in Child Social Care field, exploring how aspects of individual, family/community factors are embedded in organizational level, especially when dealing with children resilience and wellbeing. A three-level based review has been conducted. In the first part we explored the interlink between individual factors associated to either resilience or wellbeing are connected to community and governance level where a new conceptual model is provided. In the second phase, we conducted an in-depth systematic literature review using PRISMA review protocol where new categorizations of identified literature with respect to individual, family and community levels in child social care field were suggested, while in the third phase, a review of relevant AI-initiatives in Europe and USA was performed. This study examines the predictive impact of weather conditions and electricity demand on hourly spot prices of emissions allowances during the first three phases of the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) (2005–2019). We propose an original methodology for constructing European-scale electricity demand and weather indices and characterize the relationship between those indices and emissions allowances prices by means of an advanced predictive modeling technique (Extreme Gradient Boosting). Empirical findings assert that electricity demand and the weather variables under study were of importance for estimating EUA prices during the first three phases of the EU ETS, with air temperature and electricity demand being most relevant to emissions allowances prices. Conversely, total precipitation and relative humidity proved to be the least relevant variables to the outcome. The results also indicate that the relationship between emissions allowances prices and their weather-related predictors was not linear in the studied period. The paper contributes to the growing body of literature on the structural determinants of carbon prices in the EU ETS and enhances our understanding of the impact of climate and weather variability – in the provision of renewable energy production – on the most prominent market-based measure to reduce CO 2 emissions in Europe. Despite the long history of debating its meaning and its current unprecedented ubiquity both in scholarly and popular discourses, little is systematically known about how "culture" is conceived by ordinary people. This paper examines how evaluations of the contents and boundaries of expressive culture are patterned among people in and across present-day European societies, and to what degree these evaluations associate with sociodemographic and politico-cultural divisions. Using survey data collected in 2021 in nine European countries and applying latent class and multinomial regression methods, the analysis reconstructs Europeans' boundaries of the concept of culture – which objects, places and practices they see as belonging or not belonging to culture, and with which objects they remain ambivalent. The results show that the classical distinction between narrow (exclusive) and broad (inclusive) notions still structures Europeans' evaluations of expressive culture, but it operates in several modes and with national and sociodemographic variations. In contrast to traditional assumptions, the narrow evaluations are associated with lower-status groups, while the upper-status groups embrace broad notions of culture. Moreover, the broad evaluations are associated with factors such as cultural cosmopolitanism and liberal-progressive political attitudes, highlighting the potential of extending cultural stratification research by the "bottom-up" study of patterned evaluations and understandings of the concept of culture itself. Sustainability-Oriented Innovation (SOI) is recognized as a way to address agrifood system sustainability challenges. Because of its complexity, SOI requires inter-organizational collaboration between actors within and around value chains. Since farming practices account for a large part of the environmental impact of food products, farmer involvement in SOI processes is key. However, there is a lack of evidence on the degree of farmer engagement in inter-organizational collaboration, as well as the diversity of partners involved. Moreover, our understanding of the heterogeneity of collaboration in relation to the sustainability dimensions of the innovation SOI processes is limited. The objectives of our research are twofold. First, to propose a novel conceptualization of SOI, converging the sustainability specificities of the innovation process and the characteristics of the collaboration supporting the innovation process. Second, to unpack heterogeneous forms of collaboration in SOI with attention to farmer engagement in these forms. We developed the SOI framework and analyzed SOI processes in the fruit and vegetable sector across Europe. A multiple correspondence statistical analysis was carried out based on data from more than one hundred value chains that have implemented a SOI process. A hierarchical clustering analysis was performed to reveal patterns of collaboration in SOI. The results show different patterns of collaborative SOI in European fruit and vegetable chains. The SOI differ as regards to three specific dimensions: the diversity, the direction, and the distribution; and they rely on various collaboration forms. Seven clusters are analyzed and discussed, with specific attention to the farmer engagement in the collaboration forms. We differentiated between 1) Intermediary-led farm & food innovation with farmer collaboration; 2) Intermediary-led short food supply chain innovation with farmer collaboration; 3) Processor-led green food product innovation without farmer collaboration; 4) Farmer-led sustainable agricultural practices innovation with a collaborative network; 5) Farmer-led coupled innovation with downstream integration; 6) value chain actor-led coupled innovation with farmer collaboration; 7) Retailer-led distribution innovation without farmer collaboration. The relationship between diverse collaboration forms and SOI dimensions is discussed. Revealing the heterogeneity of collaboration forms in SOI processes is important for developing sound policies. Given the significant role of farmers in sustainable agrifood system transitions, this paper reveals various levels of farmer engagement in collaborative SOI processes in value chains. Climate change impacts in one country can lead to impacts in distant locations, for example, via internationally traded crops. Previous work has highlighted a need to include cross-border climate change impacts in climate risk assessments, to describe the exposure and transmission of cross-border climate risk across actors, and understand options for managing this risk. In a case study of the Brazil-Europe soy supply chain, this paper aims to explore how stakeholders perceive past and future shocks, how climate change impacts affect stakeholders differently, and how they might respond. Soy is a key internationally traded commodity and Europe relies on imports for the majority of its soy consumption, used widely in livestock feed. Via 96 semi-structured expert interviews, we found different stakeholder groups are vulnerable to different types of weather shocks, experience different price and supply consequences, and have different capacities to respond. While some responses can reduce risk of impacts across the supply chain (e.g. new soy cultivars, improving transport infrastructure), we also identified examples where responses exacerbate risk for other stakeholders (e.g. export bans, changing demand). A holistic cross-border approach to analysing risk in the soy supply chain can help avoid maladaptation and offer opportunities for more collaborative adaptation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To mitigate the effects of climate change, energy systems are becoming increasingly reliant on renewable energy sources. Since these energy sources are typically dependent on the prevailing weather, renewable energy systems are susceptible to shortages during certain weather conditions. As renewable sources become larger contributors to the energy mix, the risks associated with these shortages, referred to as energy droughts, increase. Techniques are therefore required that can help policymakers to understand and mitigate the impacts associated with energy droughts. In this paper, two standardised indices are introduced to monitor droughts in renewable energy systems. The indices incorporate energy demand and renewable energy production, and constitute analogues to the standardised precipitation index (SPI) and standardised precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), two indices regularly employed operationally to monitor meteorological droughts. The indices are straightforward to construct, can be defined on any timescale, and facilitate comparisons between regions with different climates and installed capacities. We demonstrate how the standardised energy indices proposed herein can be used to define renewable energy droughts, and illustrate the practical utility of these indices in an application to reconstructed time series of electricity demand and wind and solar power generation across Europe. During recent decades, there has been a growing consideration of the role of blue and green spaces on mental health of children, but there is insufficient attention in the literature to the mental health of children with disabilities. This paper presents an overview of the evidence on how blue and green spaces affect the mental health of children with various disabilities. A database search found twenty studies eligible for the review, after several consecutive screening stages. Most studies used a cross-sectional design and were carried out in Europe. The results consistently indicate that blue and green space can reduce emotional, behavioral, and social problems in disabled children. A protective association was found between the level of blue or greenness and depressive and anxiety symptoms. Moreover, in most of the studies there were no significant changes in the result after adjusting for socioeconomic confounders. Generally, there is an identified need for more short-term exposure studies in this area, focusing on the impact of landscape design elements on mental health of disabled children. The findings of this scoping review call on urban planners, health care workers and decision makers to consider appropriate measures and interventions providing more blue and green space exposure to disabled children. Despite the significant emphasis placed on incorporating 21st century skills into the educational framework, particularly at the primary level, recent scholarly works indicate considerable variation in the implementation of these skills across different countries and regions, suggesting a demand for further research specifically focusing on primary education. The indications of the Digicomp framework and 21st-century skills in Europe have outlined the key competences for lifelong learning needed for all citizens, including teachers and students. In this perspective, Education plays a fundamental role in ensuring that citizens acquire the required skills. The objective in the common European framework is clear: to initiate a transition from the culture of knowledge to the culture of competence. Nowadays, technological advancement allows the researchers to create and combine different frameworks with the perspective of an even more tailored, and engaged education, some examples derived from the implementation of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), in the combination of Gamification and AI, or the development of Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) to foster and create an even more personalized learning and teaching. Following these premises, in this paper, we want to point out new research reflections and perspectives that could help researchers, teachers, educators (and consequently students) to reflect on the introduction of new technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence, robot tutors) and on how these can affect on human behavioral development and on the acquisition of new skills and competences (Specifically: Creativity, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Computational Thinking) for the educational context. Precipitable water vapor (PWV), as the most abundant greenhouse gas, significantly impacts the evapotranspiration process and thus the global climate. However, the applicability of mainstream satellite PWV products is limited by the tradeoff between spatial and temporal resolutions, as well as some external factors such as cloud contamination. In this study, we proposed a novel PWV spatio-temporal fusion framework based on the zero-shot super-resolution and the multivariate autoregression models (ZSSR-ARF) to improve the accuracy and continuity of PWV. The framework is implemented in a way that the satellite-derived observations (MOD05) are fused with the reanalysis data (ERA5) to generate accurate and seamless PWV of high spatio-temporal resolution (0.01°, daily) across the European continent from 2001 to 2021. Firstly, the ZSSR approach is used to enhance the spatial resolution of ERA5 PWV based on the internal recurrence of image information. Secondly, the optimal ERA5-MOD05 image pairs are selected based on the image similarity as inputs to improve the fusion accuracy. Thirdly, the framework develops a multivariate autoregressive fusion approach to allocate weights adaptively for the high-resolution image prediction, which primely addresses the non-stationarity and autocorrelation of PWV. The results reveal that the accuracies of fused PWV are consistent with those of the GPS retrievals (r = 0.82–0.95 and RMSE = 2.21–4.01 mm), showing an enhancement in the accuracy and continuity compared to the original MODIS PWV. The ZSSR-ARF fusion framework outperforms the other methods with R2 improved by over 24% and RMSE reduced by over 0.61 mm. Furthermore, the fused PWV exhibits similar temporal consistency (mean difference of 0.40 mm and DSTD of 3.22 mm) to the reliable ERA5 products, and substantial increasing trends (mean of 0.057 mm/year and over 0.1 mm/year near the southern and western coasts) are observed over the European continent. Barley is one of the most relevant crops worldwide and an essential component of agriculture in Europe in general, and in the Mediterranean region in particular. As cropping areas will hardly rise in the future, yield must be improved to enhance global crop production. Naturally, understanding how yield is affected by environmental and genetic factors in two- and six-rowed barley can help us to develop more efficient management and breeding strategies to increase current yield gains. We aimed to determine the relative importance of genetic and environmental factors on numerical and physiological components of GN for two- and six-rowed barley types. To generate a large and unbiased database, we compiled data of yield and its numerical and physiological components from crop-based experiments (i.e., excluding controlled-conditions experiments and/or approaches using isolated plants) reported in figures and tables in every single paper having the word "barley" in the title published over 25 years in four rigorous and prestigious international journals: Field Crop Research, European Journal of Agronomy, Crop Science and Crop and Pasture Science (formerly Australian Journal of Agricultural Research) between January 1996 and December 2021, both inclusive. Spike number (SN) was the most relevant numerical component explaining GN regardless of the source of variation. Regarding physiological components, it seemed that when the driving force was environmental factors, spike dry weight at flowering (SDW F) was more relevant than fruiting efficiency (FE); whilst when the differences were due to genotypic factors, clearly the FE was the component mostly responsible for the changes in GN. When the analysis was restricted to two- and six-rowed barley types, GN improvements were mainly explained by changes in SN for both two- and six-rowed barley types. However, when the physiological components were considered, the responsiveness of GN was more related to SDW F than to FE in two-rowed genotypes, while the opposite was true for the six-rowed type. In barley, SN always explained the responses of GN better than grain number per spike (GNS), regardless the source of variation and the type of barley. Respect to the physiological components, environmental factors affected GN mainly through affecting SDW F , while genotypic factors affected GN through affecting FE. SDW F and FE were more relevant for explaining changes in GN two- and six-rowed barleys, respectively. This paper presents a comprehensive taxonomy and assessment of existing and emerging space cooling technologies in Europe. The study aims to categorize 32 alternative space cooling technologies based on eight scouting parameters (physical energy form, basic working/operating principle, refrigerant or heat transfer medium, phase of the working fluid, specific physical process/device, type of space cooling technology, fuel type and technology readiness level) and evaluate their key characteristics and development trends. The increasing demand for space cooling in Europe necessitates a thorough understanding of these technologies and their potential for energy efficiency. The majority of space cooling demand in Europe is currently met by conventional vapour compression systems, while a small portion is covered by thermally-driven heat pumps. The study reveals that several alternative space cooling technologies show promise for energy-efficient cooling but are not yet competitive with vapour compression systems in terms of efficiency and cost in the short-term and medium-term. However, technologies such as membrane heat pumps, thermionic systems, thermotunnel systems, and evaporative liquid desiccant systems demonstrate cost-competitiveness and energy efficiency in specific applications. The findings highlight the need for further research and development to improve the efficiency, costs, and market competitiveness of alternative space cooling technologies. In the last decades, a risk-based approach has been identified as a step forward in modernising meat safety system in Europe. Risk categorisation of abattoirs based on their process hygiene and the appropriate use of harmonised epidemiological indicators (HEIs) has been suggested as one essential component of the risk-based meat safety assurance system. However, to date, only a limited number of papers have investigated abattoir risk categorisation. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to (i) provide an overview of the use of risk categorisation systems in poultry, pig, cattle and small ruminant abattoirs in Europe and (ii) explore the criteria, relevance and applicability of risk categorisation systems for competent authorities (CAs). To that aim, a questionnaire was designed and sent to representatives of 35 European CAs. Of the 18/35 respondents (51%), 14 (78%) indicated that abattoirs in their country are categorised according to their food safety risk in a systematic way, whilst four countries (22%) do not categorise abattoirs according to their food safety risk. The main reported purpose of categorising abattoirs is to adapt the frequency of official controls. Major differences in the described categorisation systems were found between countries, particularly in their complexity and the criteria used. The number of included criteria ranged from 1 to 10, the main ones being the outcomes of the CA's official audits (78% of the 14 countries), the size of abattoirs (64%), the relevance and credibility of HACCP plans (57%) and export agreements of abattoirs (43%). Less than a third of the surveyed countries indicated they utilise results of microbiological testing as a basis for risk categorisation of abattoirs, and no country has formally included HEIs in its risk categorisation system. The effectiveness of the implemented risk categorisation systems was assessed in five countries only (36%), but with the use of unclear methodology and assessment criteria. More than 80% of respondents expressed their wish to be provided with a practical method for categorising abattoirs according to their pertained food safety risks. Rapid cooling during the Eocene-Oligocene transition resulted in a vegetation shift in southern France, from warm, humid vegetation to open savannah-like vegetation; however, the precise nature of this shift is uncertain. In this paper, we study the latest Eocene flora from the Saint-Chaptes and Alès basins (southern France) and compare it with other well-known southern European localities to evaluate vegetation changes near the Eocene-Oligocene boundary. Five plant communities are recognised: 1) hydrophytic vegetation dominated by water lilies and a Limnobiophyllum -like plant; 2) reeds that formed a palustrine belt around the lake; 3) ferns with Osmunda aff. parschlugiana and Pronephrium stiriacum , conifers with Doliostrobus taxiformis , a Sequoia -like plant, angiosperms with Daphnogene sp. , Byttneriopsis sp., Myrica sp., Comptonia difformis and palms, which inhabited the lake shores and constituted the riparian vegetation; 4) Tetraclinis , which grew just behind the riparian vegetation but not far from watercourses, forming open landscapes and 5) Zizyphus ziziphoides , Fabaceae, and probably Ailanthus sp. and Tetraclinis forming an open woodland distal to the lake. The flora of the Saint-Chaptes and Alès basins resembles coeval floras from Sarral (Catalonia, Spain) that are characteristic of Southern Europe, although riparian vegetation is more diverse in the Saint-Chaptes and Alès basins, and Fabaceae diversity is higher at Sarral. We hypothesise that vegetation composition was mainly controlled by (1) basin architecture, allowing for a variety of wetland habitats and (2) climate. The coexistence of genera that are restricted to Central Europe (e.g., Byttneriopsis or Doliostrobus), together with genera more typical of Southern Europe (e.g., diversity of Fabaceae, C. difformis and Z. ziziphoides) suggests that the Saint-Chaptes and Alès basins contain latest Priabonian floras that are transitional between these two regions. • Plant paleoecology at the EOT is studied in the Alès and Saint-Chaptes basins (France). • Plant communities range from lacustrine, wetlands to savannah-like woodlands. • The riparian vegetation is more diverse than in other coeval South European plant sites. • Alès and Saint-Chaptes flora shows taxa characteristic either South or Central Europe. • These plants represent a transitional flora between the two main European vegetations. Covid-19 outbreak has mostly affected people in the second half of their lives, at risk of isolation and loneliness; in fact, the impact of the pandemic was even more severe for the well-being of the elderly. Such a recent event has to be framed within the challenge of the demographic increase of people aged 65 years or older, which is particularly relevant in the European context. This paper explores which gaps have to be filled up in order to make cities a suitable place for the elderly to live in, particularly after any emergence of dysfunction and fragility in health, employment, transportation and welfare systems due to the pandemic. We assess the relative contribution of each regressor to the explained variance, that may advise policy makers about which urban features are perceived to be the most relevant for the elderly, even before the pandemic, and must be implemented. Our results have several policy implications. Hydrological events associated with climate change, i.e. floods and droughts, have reached extreme levels in recent years. Researchers warn that these phenomena will continue to intensify. According to recent reports, the number of extreme weather events, including hydrological phenomena, has increased by 60% in Europe over the last three decades. Both water shortages and water surpluses affect the soil environment and its functions. This in turn has a direct impact on crops and agriculture. For example, in the US alone, droughts and floods were responsible for more than 70% of the decline in cereal yields in 2011 alone. However, the soil environment is a complex ecosystem that is not yet fully understood, making it difficult to predict the impact of climate change on its quality and functioning. In this paper, we discuss the effects of floods and droughts on the soil microbiome and the implications of these changes for agriculture. As the demand for index insurance in Europe remains low, the use of satellite-retrieved data has received considerable research attention because it can reduce the basis risk, increase hedging effectiveness and thus potentially increase the attractiveness of index insurance to farmers. However, there is limited knowledge on farmers' demand and specific preferences for satellite-based index insurance. This study aims to obtain initial insights into farmers' preferences for satellite-based index insurance. In particular, farmers' overall preferences for satellite-based compared to precipitation-based index insurance are investigated. The objective is further deepened by investigating the effect of partially subsidizing index insurance. Finally, we focus on differences in preferences caused by the farmer's individual specific factors as this allows to identify the potential target groups for satellite-based index insurance. As satellite-based index insurance is still hard to find in Europe, a discrete choice experiment has been conducted with 127 German farmers. In a hypothetical scenario, farmers had to choose whether or not to insure themselves against drought by purchasing hypothetical index insurance products. Specifically, based on a labeled design, they had to choose between a satellite-based and a precipitation-based index insurance, or could choose not to use either alternative (opt-out). We include other insurance attributes such as premium, strike level and payout as they were rated as important by the farmers. Mixed logit model results show a preference for both index insurance products against no insurance. Particularly, the average farmer has a statistically significant higher preference for the satellite-based index insurance. In addition, subsidizing satellite-based index insurance has a higher effect on farmers' preferences. Moreover, the latent class model identifies heterogeneous preferences among farmers. Insurers can be advised to incorporate satellite data into the design of index insurance. By integrating them into existing index insurance products or by developing purely satellite-based index insurance, insurers could tailor index insurance better to farmers' preferences. Policymakers can be advised that farmers are differentially sensitive to subsidies. Especially farmers with a stronger preference for the satellite-based index insurance derive a huge increase in utility from subsidies. The study provides initial insights into farmers' preferences for satellite-based index insurance that can guide insurers regarding the design of index insurance products and give policymakers insights into how governmental support would change farmers' demand for index insurance. This paper presents a systematic literature review on both the risks affecting wood supply security and risk mitigation strategies by quantitative and qualitative data analysis. It describes wood-specific supply chain risks, thereupon resulting impacts and counteracting strategies to ensure supply. Risks, impacts, and strategies are documented as basis for a comparative analysis, discussion of results, challenges and research gaps. Finally, the suitability and the limitations of the chosen methodology and the achieved results are discussed. Scanning wood supply chain risks and supply strategies, most of the reviewed papers focus on wood supply for bioenergy generation and only a few studies investigate wood supply chain risk issues for the sawing, wood panel, pulp and paper industries, or biorefineries. This review differs significantly from other reviews in this field as it considers the entire wood value chain including recent studies on new chemical wood-based products and thus provides a more complete picture of the wood-based bioeconomy. Consequently, it contributes to the literature by providing an overarching investigation of the risks affecting wood supply security and possible side effects of a growing wood-based bioeconomy. It was found that comprehensive value chain analyses considering established wood products, large-volume bioenergy products, as well as established and new chemical wood-based products in the context of wood supply security are missing. Methods and approaches that can be used in toxicology and safety assessment are changing at a faster pace than ever. Members of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Europe have formed an expert group to review possibilities, opportunities and challenges for the potential use of non-animal testing strategies in food safety and nutrition research, which can ultimately be used in support of regulatory submissions for pre-market authorisation. For the different areas of food improvement agents, genetically modified foods and novel foods, the acceptability of non-animal strategies is evaluated in comparison to legislative requirements in Europe. Current hazard and risk assessment tools that do not require additional animal testing are reviewed and emerging tools and methodologies considered, covering advanced in vitro methods, in silico and system biology approaches and high-throughput methods for mode-of-action assessment. The paper highlights the great potential for research strategies to be developed that reduce or avoid the use of animal tests, with the generation of more human-relevant data from multiple sources. It also shows the discordance in current legislation: on one hand saying non-animal strategies should be used, but on the other hand not providing sufficient guidance, leading in practice to lack of use of these non-animal testing strategies. This emphasizes the need for scientific developments and acceptability to be more reflected in legislation (e.g. guidance). There have been major reforms of the financial system within Europe over the past two decades. These reforms were initiated to enhance the competitiveness and sustainable economic growth of economies in this region. This paper investigates the inter-relationships between the reforms undertaken in the financial sector (banking sector, stock market, and insurance industries) and economic growth in Europe. More specifically, this study examines whether there are Granger causal relationships between banking competition, stock-market development, insurance market development, and economic growth, using a panel dataset covering European countries over the period from 1996 to 2016. Utilizing a multivariate framework, the study's results show that all the variables are cointegrated. The findings reveal a network of Granger causal associates between the variables, including short-run bidirectional causality between stock market development and insurance market development. In the long run, there is compelling evidence of Granger causality from banking competition, insurance market development, and stock market development to economic growth. The results provide valuable insights into the types of financial sector reforms that will enhance sustainable economic growth in Europe. In the 21st century, the urban systems in most countries have undergone constant change, ranging between shrinkage, growth, and non-linear trajectories. All trends have an effect on the hinterland and are discussed in the context of agglomeration effects or hinterland shrinkage due to reurbanization. Thus, cities' population trajectories are not independent but rather is reinforced or runs contrary to the hinterland development. In order to simultaneously capture trends in cities and their hinterlands, urban life-cycle models are used. Using a systematic differentiation between the trend in the core and the hinterland, it is possible to distinguish between a stronger population growth of core cities and a situation in which the hinterland is growing faster – labeled centralization and decentralization, respectively. Developed in the 1980s, the widely used model of van den Berg reveals, however, some major drawbacks. Against this background, the paper will revisit van den Berg's et al. model and test it against the urban conditions in Europe between 1990 and 2010 by asking whether cities are decentralizing or centralizing and whether there are differences between growing and shrinking cities. The paper develops a city delineation, covering large and small cities, uses data about age structure, and applies an adapted model by measuring the intensity of the trends. The rapidly changing population trends since the beginning of the global economic crisis and its effects in Europe since 2008 require that more attention be paid to changing configurations between cities and processes beyond cities' borders, which is essential for both scholars and urban planners.
