Accompanying China's accession to the World Trade Organization, the rapid development of the Chinese economy has led to increasingly serious environmental issues. However, the inherent mechanisms underlying the impact of Environmental Information Disclosure (EID) policy and trade on the environmental effects of Chinese paper enterprises remain unclear in the context of the era's requirement for a resource-conserving and environmentally-friendly society. The pollution problem in the papermaking industry has received attention worldwide, and how to balance the environmental and development issues of papermaking enterprises is an urgent issue that needs to be solved in the academic community. This study explores the impact mechanisms of EID policy and trade on the environmental effects of enterprises from the perspective of financial constraints. Utilizing the PSM-DID model, the study investigates the moderating effects of financial constraints on the EID policy and import-export trade. The findings reveal that both external and internal financial constraints have negative, detrimental effects on the environmental effects of the EID policy and trade. These constraints impede research and development investment and technological upgrades, hinder productivity improvement, and hamper the realization of "regulatory and trade innovation effects". Secondary effluent from paper mill was characterized by poor biodegradability and containing recalcitrant compounds. In this study, four bioreactors, including a sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR), a stirred-tank reactor (STR) and two submerged aeration reactors (SAR) were used to treat secondary effluent from a recycled paper mill respectively. The results indicated that chemical oxygen demand (COD) was increased by SAR2 treatment and COD removal efficiency for SBBR, SAR1 and STR was 39.7%, 15.7% and 30.9% respectively. It is suggested that recalcitrant compounds were removed by SBBR, SAR1 and STR respectively. Total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) of wastewater were increased by treatments of each bioreactor, which suggested that endogenous respiration of biomass occurred during the treatment. Microbial analysis of sludge from different bioreactors suggested that the removal of recalcitrant compounds in SBBR and STR might be related to the presence of unique microorganisms in each reactor., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Objectives: To present the history and potential for development of evidence-based (EB) social work in China., Study Design and Setting: The conception and methodology of EB social work is a potential strategy to support high quality development of social work in China. This article documents and analyzes the progress of EB social work in China. We focus on current research, reasons, challenges, and strategies., Results: EB social work started late in China. The number of EB social work literature and systematic reviews has increased since 2004. The development of EB social work has been uneven nationally with few practitioners and decision makers involved. However, more and more social work researchers received training in evidence-based practice through national workshops and conferences., Conclusion: EB social work faced various challenges, but there are now more opportunities for EB social work development in China. Objective: This study collected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in the social sciences in China and assessed their risk of bias and reporting quality., Study Design and Setting: Three databases were systematically searched for publications from January 2000 to June 2020 for RCTs in the social sciences published by Chinese researchers. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias Tool, and reporting quality was assessed using the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials for Social and Psychological Interventions (CONSORT-SPI)., Results: A total of 316 RCTs were identified, including 204 articles in English and 112 articles in Chinese. The most frequently researched interventions focused on education (33.9%), and the most frequently studied population were students (32.9%). Eighty-seven percent of RCTs had intermediate reporting quality. Twenty-four of the 43 CONSORT-SPI sub-items had a compliance rate of less than 50%. Most RCTs had an unclear risk of bias for blinding outcome assessors (84.5%), blinding participants and personnel (82.9%), allocation concealment (73.1%), and random sequence generation (68.0%). A low proportion of CONSORT-SPI items were reported and, high proportion of the papers had unclear risk of bias., Conclusion: The quality and reporting of RCTs in the social sciences needs improvement in China, especially for reporting methods and results. Objectives: To examine the characteristics, methodological and reporting quality of systematic reviews and meta-analyses in social science journals in China., Study Design and Setting: The Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) databases were searched for systematic reviews and meta-analysis published between January 2000 and December 2019. We randomly selected 200 articles from the 401 identified in our search. The Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) checklists were used to assess the methodological and reporting quality, respectively., Results: The 200 articles we selected covered a wide range of research fields in 9 disciplines, most of which belonged to management, education and psychology. The mean AMSTAR score and PRISMA score was 8.99 ± 3.36 points and 14.74 ± 3.96 points, respectively. These findings indicated that the quality of the systematic reviews was below the average level. Meanwhile, year of publication was related to both methodological quality (P = 0.001) and reporting quality (P < 0.01)., Conclusion: Although many systematic reviews and meta-analysis have been published in top Chinese journals, the methodological and reporting quality is troubling. Thus, the most urgent task is to increase the standard of systematic reviews and meta-analysis of every discipline rather than continuing to publish them in great quantity., (Copyright © 2021. Objective: To assess the methodological and reporting quality of Chinese- and English -language systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRs/MAs) published by Chinese authors between 2016 and 2018., Study Design and Setting: We searched MEDLINE and Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD) for SRs/MAs led by Chinese authors published between 2016 and 2018. We used random sampling to select 10% of the eligible SRs/MAs published in each year from CSCD, and then matched the same number of SRs/MAs in MEDLINE. Reporting quality was evaluated using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and methodological quality using the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR-2) tool. Stratified analyses were conducted to compare the differences of quality between Chinese- and English language SRs/MAs., Results: We identified 336 SRs/MAs (168 in Chinese and 168 in English). The reporting quality in Chinese-language SRs/MAs was slightly lower than English-language SRs/MAs (mean PRISMA scores: 20.58 vs. 21.71 in 2016, 19.87 vs. 21.24 in 2017, and 21.29 vs. 22.38 in 2018). Less than half of both Chinese- and English-language SRs/MAs complied with item 5 (protocol and registration), item 7 (information sources), item 8 (search) and item 27 (funding)). The methodological quality in Chinese -language SRs/MAs was also slightly lower than English -language SRs/MAs (mean AMSTAR-2 scores: 8.07 vs. 9.36 in 2016; 9.21 vs. 10.26 in 2017; 8.86 vs. 9.28 in 2018). Three items (item 2: established a protocol; item 4: use a comprehensive literature search; and item 10: report the sources of funding) were adhered to by less than 10% of both Chinese- and English -language SRs/MAs. Only one (0.6%) Chinese-language SRs/MA and nine (5.4%) English-language SRs/MAs were rated as high methodological quality., Conclusion: The reporting and methodological quality of English-language SRs/MAs conducted by authors from China between 2016 and 2018 were slightly better than those of Chinese -language SRs/MAs., (Copyright © 2021. Objective: This study aimed to systematically review the methodological and reporting quality of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) developed in China and published in medical journals between 2014 and 2018., Study Design and Setting: We conducted a comprehensive search in multiple databases: MEDLINE (via PubMed), Embase, CBM (China Biology Medicine), CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) and Wanfang Data. We included all clinical practice guidelines developed in China between 2014 and 2018. The AGREE II tool and the RIGHT checklist were used to appraise the methodological quality and reporting quality of the included guidelines, respectively., Results: We identified 17,188 records, and included finally 573 CPGs. Most (n=507, 88.5%) were published in Chinese, and 508 (88.7%) were about Western medicine. Only 62 (10.8%) of the guidelines used the GRADE approach. The mean overall score of methodological quality over all guidelines was 19.4%, and the mean scores for the AGREE II domains were 28.6% (Scope and purpose), 17.0% (Stakeholder involvement), 11.7% (Rigor of development), 32.2% (Clarity of presentation), 14.2% (Applicability) and 12.8% (Editorial independence). The mean overall score for reporting quality over all guidelines was 30.2%, with the following mean scores for each RIGHT domain: 55.6% (Basic information), 43.8% (Background), 14.5% (Evidence), 29.2% (Recommendations), 10.7% (Review and quality assurance), 12.6% (Funding and declaration of interest) and 8.4% (Other information). Objective: To share the experience of promoting GRADE in China., Study Design and Setting: We designed the study and collected data on the following three aspects of the GRADE in China: the key activities related to GRADE, the main achievements of the GRADE, and potential challenges and future opportunities., Results: Three GRADE centres have been established in China since 2011. Seventeen articles of the GRADE working group have been translated and published in Chinese, and 31 articles have been written by Chinese scientists in Chinese to introduce and interpret the GRADE approach so far. More than 50 GRADE workshops and meetings have been held by GRADE centres in China, covering two-thirds of all provinces and autonomous regions of China. The percentages of societies from the Chinese Medical Association (CMA) and the Chinese Medical Doctor Association (CMDA) that used the GRADE system to develop guidelines were 30% and 18%, respectively., Conclusion: Over the past decade, China has made progress in promoting the GRADE system and Chinese GRADE centres have made a significant contribution., (Copyright © 2021. Objective: To describe and record the evolution of EBM in China., Study Design and Setting: We conducted the study following the general methodology of oral history. The interviews were done at Lanzhou University, between 18 th and 22 nd April 2019 using pre-defined questions. All interviews were videorecorded. Two investigators extracted and analyzed the information from the interviews independently., Results: One international expert and ten Chinese experts participated in the interviews. After the introduction of EBM in China in the mid-1990s, more than 20 EBM centres have been established. According to the interviewees, Gordon Guyatt, David Sackett and Iain Chalmers are the international experts who played the most important role in the development of EBM in China. China has contributed to EBM on the international level by conducting systematic reviews, developing reporting checklists, and introducing the principles of EBM into Traditional Medicine. The Chinese Cochrane Centre and the EBM Centre of Lanzhou University were ranked the top two EBM Centres in China by the interviewees., Conclusion: EBM has been developing in China for nearly a quarter of a century. Objective: The objective of this study was to develop the first edition of a Chinese evidence-based position paper on the management of oral leukoplakia (OLK)., Study Design: The consultant group for drafting the position paper consisted of 31 oral medicine specialists and 2 evidence-based medicine specialists. English studies (searched in PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library) and Chinese studies (searched in China National Knowledge Infrastructure and WanFang) published before January 2018 were used. The quality of the study was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation grid, and the strength of the recommendations was determined based on the results of 3 rounds of voting among the consultant group members using the Delphi method., Results: Twenty-two evidence-based guidelines for clinical management and monitoring of OLK were established in this position paper. A clinical path diagram for oral health practitioners was constructed based on the recommendations., Conclusion: Current evidence suggests that management and monitoring of patients with OLK should be performed by experienced clinicians to control the lesion and for early detection of malignant transformation. Research dissemination is becoming more and more global. There is, however, limitation in allowing researchers who speak a language other than Chinese to follow the research trends in China, a country with the largest population in the world. Therefore, the purpose of this review article was to introduce the current research studies conducted in Mainland China. We limited our search of publications between 2012 and 2013 from three tier one Chinese mental health journals. Purpose: We propose to look at the quality of performance metrics reporting in papers comparing two or more treatments. Our goal is to provide additional context in the focus on evidence-based medicine., Methods: We reviewed papers (1082 papers with 98 papers meeting the inclusion criteria) from four important orthopaedic journals published in 2009 to quantify and analyse the quality of papers reporting performance metrics, defined as (1) radiographic evidence; (2) training/experience of surgeon(s); and (3) intra-operative measurements., Results: Our research revealed that only 32 papers (33%) reported performance metrics. There were no significant differences in the rate of performance metrics reporting amongst the journals included or amongst the different orthopaedic subspecialties topics; however, papers from South Korea and China reported both performance metrics in general and radiographic measurements specifically at a higher rate than papers from the western world., Conclusions: The low rate of performance metric reporting could have an impact on the reader's ability to determine the reproducibility of the results published. With the rise of the aging population, the demand for adult incontinence products keeps increasing in developing countries. The increasing market demand for adult incontinence products will inevitably drive up upstream production, leading to more resources and energy consumption, carbon emissions, and heavier environmental pollution. It is imperative to explore the environmental impact of those products and seek opportunities to reduce the environmental impact, which is insufficient. This study aims to fill the gap in research on comparative analysis of energy consumption, carbon emissions, and the environmental impact of adult incontinence products from a life cycle perspective under different energy saving and emission reduction scenarios in the context of aging in China. Based on empirical data from a top papermaking manufacturer in China, this study applies Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method to analyze the impact of adult incontinence products from cradle to grave. Then different scenarios in the future are set to explore the potential of and the possible pathways for energy-saving and emission-reduction of adult incontinence products from the perspective of the whole life cycle. The results indicate that the energy and materials inputs are the environmental hotspots of adult incontinence products. Under the future trend of the aging population, the predictable optimization of energy structure, optimization of material composition, and final disposal methods are far from being able to cope with the enormous environmental burden brought by the increase in the consumption of adult incontinence products, especially in 2060 which shows 3.33 to 18.40 times the annual environmental burden under the optimal energy saving and emission reduction scenario, compared to the base year 2020. Introduction: Previous studies have examined family socioeconomic status (SES) and regional-level factors that predict adolescents' present subjective wellbeing (SWB). However, as adolescents' SWB tends to be future-oriented, this study examined the relationships between family SES and provincial-level economic, educational, and health-related factors and adolescents' present- and future-oriented SWB., Methods: The sample includes 17,341 12- to 17-year-old adolescents (M age  = 13.86; SD age  = 0.79; 9056 girls and 8285 boys) from 31 different provinces of China. Multilevel modeling was used to analyze the data at two levels., Results: The findings showed that family SES (Level-1) was positively correlated with present life satisfaction (LS-P), present positive affect (PPA), hopeful future expectations (HFE), and positive affect toward future life (FPA), but negatively correlated with present negative affect (PNA) and negative affect toward future life (FNA). Provincial-level (Level-2) years of education per capita, average life expectancy, and human development index (HDI) were positively associated with LS-P, PPA, FPA, and HFE, and negatively associated with PNA; only average life expectancy was negatively associated with FNA. There was no association between gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and SWB. Simple slope analyses demonstrated that, in provinces with relatively less or short years of education per capita, GDP per capita, average life expectancy, or HDI, the correlations between family SES and present- and future-oriented negative affect were stronger., Conclusions: The present- and future-oriented SWB of adolescents from families with low SES in underdeveloped areas was relatively poor. This article describes the first two years of Norplant implants use among 1560 acceptors in four counties of rural north China. Continuation of use was high, 88.4% after two years. Disruption of the menstrual cycle was the predominant side effect and the predominant reason for termination. Clinical performance among the four counties was diverse, with two-year continuation rates ranging from 73.9% to 95.3%. Factors that may contribute to the diversity among study sites and the overall high continuation rate are discussed in the context of Chinese family planning.

The results of a prospective longitudinal controlled study comparing some metabolic effects of a low-dose levonorgestrel-ethinyl oestradiol combined oral contraceptive (Microgynon 30), a desogestrel-ethinyl oestradiol-containing pill (Marvelon) and a levonorgestrel-ethinyl oestradiol triphasic preparation (Triquilar) after one year of treatment in ethnic Chinese women are presented. Serum cholesterol levels are similar for the three pills at 6 and 12 months of treatment. Marvelon and Triquilar users showed rises in triglyceride levels while Microgynon 30 users had no change after one year of treatment. Lipoprotein fractions showed favourable changes in Triquilar and Marvelon users with significant rise in HDL fractions at 6 and 12 months; Microgynon 30 users had equivocal changes in HDL fractions. Carbohydrate metabolism as reflected by glucose tolerance showed deterioration with all 3 pills, being least with Microgynon 30 and greatest with Marvelon at 12 months.

Mycorrhizae and their hyphae play critical roles in soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation. However, their individual contributions to SOC components and stability under climate warming conditions remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of warming on the SOC pools of Picea asperata (an ectomycorrhizal plant) and Fargesia nitida (an arbuscular mycorrhizal plant) mycorrhizae/hyphae on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. The results indicated that mycorrhizae made greater contributions to SOC accumulation than hyphae did by increasing labile organic carbon (LOC) components, such as particle organic carbon (POC), easily oxidizable organic carbon, and microbial biomass carbon, especially under warming conditions. Plant species also had different effects on SOC composition, resulting in higher mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) contents in F. nitida plots than in P. asperata plots; consequently, the former favored SOC stability more than the latter, with a lower POC/MAOC. Partial least-squares path modelling further indicated that mycorrhizae/hyphae indirectly affected LOC pools, mainly by changing soil pH and enzyme activities. Warming had no significant effect on SOC content but did change SOC composition by reducing LOC through affecting soil pH and iron oxides and ultimately increasing SOC stability in the presence of mycorrhizae for both plants. Anthropogenic eutrophication is known to impair the diversity and stability of aboveground community, but its effects on the diversity, composition and stability of belowground ecosystems are not yet fully understood. In this study, we conducted a 9-year nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) addition experiment in a semi-arid grassland of Northern China to elucidate the impacts of nutrients addition on soil fungal diversity, functional guilds, and co-occurrence networks. The results showed that N addition significantly decreased soil fungal diversity and altered fungal community composition, whereas P addition had no impact on them. The relative abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and leaf&#95;saprotroph were reduced by N and P addition, but P addition enhanced the abundance of saprotrophic fungi. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that N addition destabilized fungal network complexity and stability, while P addition slightly increased the network complexity. Additionally, the network analysis of N × P interaction revealed that P addition mitigated negative effects of N addition on network complexity and stability. Structural equation modeling (SEM) results suggested that nutrients addition directly or indirectly influenced the fungal community structure through the loss of plant richness and the increase of perennial grass biomass. These findings indicate that in comparison to P addition, N addition exhibits a pronounced negative effect on soil fungal communities. Two main challenges which human society faces for sustainable development goals are the maintenance of food security and mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Here, we examined the impacts of six fertilization treatments including unfertilized control (CK), mineral nitrogen (N, 90 kg N ha -1 ), mineral N plus 30 kg P ha -1 phosphorus (NP), NP combined with 3.75 Mg ha -1 straw (NP + Str), farmyard manure (Man, 75 Mg ha -1 ), and NP combined with manure (NP + Man) on crop productivity and carbon emissions (soil GHG emission; GHGI, yield-based GHG intensity; NGHGB, net GHG balance; carbon footprint, CF) in a maize-wheat cropping system during two years (April 2018-June 2020) in a semi-arid continental climate after 40 years of fertilization in the Northwest China. Manure and straw increased total GHG by 38-60 % compared to the mineral fertilizers alone, which was mainly due to the 49-80 % higher direct emissions of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) rather than nitrous oxide (N 2 O). Compared to the N fertilizer alone, organic amendments and NP increased cumulative energy yield by 134-202 % but decreased GHGI by 38-55 %, indicating that organic fertilizers increased crop productivity at the cost of higher GHG emissions. When the soil organic carbon changes (ΔSOC) were accounted for in the C emission balance, manure application acted as a net C sink due to the NGHGB recorded with -123 kg CO 2 -eq ha -1  year -1 . When producing the same yield and economic benefits, the manure and straw addition decreased the CF by 59-85 % compared to N fertilization alone. Uncovering the spatiotemporal features of ecosystem services (ESs) and their intricate interrelations in large lake basins can facilitate the development of scientific management measures for various ESs. Previous studies have focused less on watershed units and their historical dynamics, and the ecosystem service (ES) driving mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we focused on Hunan Province-the main coverage area of the Dongting Lake Basin (China's second largest freshwater lake), investigated the spatiotemporal characteristics of seven typical ESs and their interactions, identified the ecosystem service bundle (ESB) historical spatial patterns and revealed the socio-ecological driving mechanisms of these ES changes. Results showed that: (1) the spatial distribution of most ESs remained stable in the basin. Food production (FP), water yield (WY), soil conservation (SC) and net primary productivity (NPP) improved over time, whereas nitrogen retention (NR), habitat quality (HQ) and outdoor recreation (OR) declined; (2) tradeoffs were observed between food production and most ESs, whereas synergistic relationships between all ESs except food production. The tradeoff relationship between food production and water yield increased significantly over time, while the synergistic relationship between water yield and nitrogen retention decreased significantly; (3) five ecosystem service bundles were identified. And the transformation of soil conservation area into integrated ecological regulation area mainly occurred from 2000 to 2020, resulting in an increase in the function of ecological regulation services; (4) natural conditions such as precipitation, topography and vegetation, as well as socio-economic factors such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and population, were key factors affecting ESs. The interactions among most of these drivers can further elucidate the ES changes. China faces a serious challenge with water pollution posed by potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Comprehensive and reliable environmental risk assessment is paramount for precise pollution prevention and control. Previous studies generally focused on a single environmental compartment within small regions, and the uncertainty in risk calculation is not fully considered. This study revealed the current exposure status of 11 PTEs in surface water and sediment across China using previously reported concentration data in 301 well-screened articles. Ecological and human health risks were evaluated and the uncertainty related to calculation parameters and exposure dataset were quantified. PTEs of high concern were further identified. Results showed Mn and Zn had the highest concentration levels, while Hg and Cd had the lowest concentrations in both surface water and sediment. Risk assessment of individual PTE showed that high-risk PTEs varied by risk receptors and environmental compartments. Nationwide, the probability of aquatic organisms being affected by Mn, Zn, Cu, and As in surface water exceeded 10 %. In sediment, Cd and Hg exhibited high and considerable risk, respectively. As was identified as the major PTE threatening human health as its carcinogenic risk was 1.45 × 10 -4 through direct ingestion. Combined risk assessment showed the PTE mixture in surface water and sediment posed medium and high ecological risk with the risk quotient and potential ecological risk index of 1.76 and 558.36, respectively. Adverse health effects through incidental ingestion and dermal contact during swimming were negligible. The use of reclaimed water for urban river replenishment has raised concerns regarding its impact on water quality and aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to reveal the improvements seen in an urban river undergoing a practical water eco-remediation after being replenished with reclaimed water. A one-year monitoring of water quality, phytoplankton, and zooplankton was carried out in Dongsha River undergoing eco-remediation in Beijing, China. The results showed that compared to the unrestored river, the concentrations of COD, NH 4 + -N, TP, and TN decreased by 28.22 ± 7.88 %, 40.24 ± 11.77 %, 44.17 ± 17.29 %, and 28.66 ± 10.39 % in the restoration project area, respectively. The concentration of Chlorophyll-a in the restoration area was maintained below 40 μg/L. During summer, when algal growth is vigorous, the density of Cyanophyta in the unrestored river decreased from 46.84 × 10 4 cells/L to 16.32 × 10 4 cells/L in the restored area, while that of Chlorophyta decreased from 41.61 × 10 4 cells/L, a reduction of 65.16 % and 71.47 %, respectively. The dominant phytoplankton species were replaced with Bacillariophyta, such as Synedra sp. and Nitzschia sp., indicating that the restoration of aquatic plants reduces the risk of Cyanophyta blooms. Zooplankton species also changed in the restoration area, especially during summer. The density of pollution-tolerant Rotifer and Protozoa decreased by 31.06 % and 27.22 %, while the density of clean water indicating Cladocera increased by 101.19 %. We further calculated the diversity and evenness index of phytoplankton and zooplankton within and outside the restoration area. The results showed that the Shannon-Weaver index for phytoplankton and zooplankton in the restoration area was 2.1 and 1.91, which was higher than those in the river (1.84 and 1.82). This further confirmed that aquatic plant restoration has positive effects. Anthropogenic Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) in marine environments have raised significant concerns. Yet, analyses detailing their origins, fate, and environmental effects are limited. This study employs an integrated non-target screening methodology to elucidate CECs existence across 46 sampling sites in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) of the South China Sea. Assisted by advanced liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry, we discovered 208 chemicals in six usage categories, with pesticides (33 %) and pharmaceuticals (29 %) predominating. Several CECs drew attention for their consistent detections, profound abundance, and significant ecotoxicities. The wide detection of them at offshore sites further implies that anthropogenic activities may contribute to large-scale contamination. Meanwhile, distinct distribution patterns of CECs across PRE are evident in semi-quantitative results, indicating regional anthropogenic influences. Identified transformation products may establish a novel and non-negligible negative contribution to ecology through elevated environmental toxicities, exemplified by HMMM and atrazine. Based on the ecological risks, we compiled a prioritized list of 21 CECs warranting intensified scrutiny. A remarkable progress has been made toward the air quality improvements over the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) of China from 2017 to 2020. In this study, for the first time, the emission reductions of regional control measures together with the COVID-19 pandemic were considered simultaneously into the development of the GBA's emission inventories for the years of 2017 and 2020. Based on these collective emission inventories, the impacts of control measures, meteorological variations together with temporary COVID-19 lockdowns on the five major air quality index pollutants (SO 2 , NO 2 , PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and O 3 , excluding CO) were evaluated using the WRF-CMAQ and SMAT-CE model attainment assessment tool over the GBA region. Our results revealed that control measures in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region affected significantly the GBA, resulting in pollutant reductions ranging from 48 % to 64 %. In contrast, control measures in Hong Kong and Macao contributed to pollutant reductions up to 10 %. In PRD emission sectors, stationary combustion, on-road, industrial processes and dust sectors stand out as the primary contributors to overall air quality improvements. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic during period I (Jan 23-Feb 23) led to a reduction of NO 2 concentration by 7.4 %, resulting in a negative contribution (disbenefit) for O 3 with an increase by 2.4 %. Algal blooms have been increasingly prevalent in recent years, especially in lakes and reservoirs; their accurate prediction is essential for preserving water quality. In this study, the observed chlorophyll a (chl-a) levels were assimilated into the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) of algal bloom dynamics by using a particle filter (PF), and the state variables of water quality and model parameters were simultaneously updated to achieve enhanced algal bloom predictive performance. The developed data assimilation system for algal blooms was applied to Xiangxi Bay (XXB) in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). The results show that the ensemble mean accuracy and reliability of the confidence intervals of the predicted state variables, including chl-a and indirectly updated phosphate (PO 4 ), ammonium (NH 4 ), and nitrate (NO 3 ) levels, were considerably improved after PF assimilation. Thus, PF assimilation is an effective tool for the dynamic correction of parameters to represent their inherent variations. Anthropogenic activities over the past half-century have had a negative impact on the wetland ecosystem in the Nile Delta, which provides essential provisioning and regulating services. Therefore, it is crucial to systematically investigate pollution levels and their ecological consequences at both spatial and temporal scales in order to promote sustainable development. In this study, data on metal pollution in the Manzala Lake were compiled through a systematic review of all published literature from 1968 to 2020. Additionally, agricultural data (including land use, pesticide and fertilizer usage, and discharge) and economic data for the same time period were collected to identify the main drivers of pollution. The results indicated an overall increasing trend in heavy metal concentrations during the study period. The average concentrations of metals, arranged in descending order, were as follows: Fe (15,115.5 μg/g) > Mn (722 μg/g) > Zn (115.4 μg/g) > Cu (65.9 μg/g) > Ni (62.5 μg/g) > Cr (58.1 μg/g) > Pb (54.1 μg/g) > Cd (4.7 μg/g) > Hg (0.1 μg/g). A linear regression model revealed that wastewater discharge, water reuse, and the use of pesticides and fertilizers are the main sources of heavy metal pollution in the Manzala Lake. Consequently, there has been a dramatic decrease in the biodiversity of fish and molluscan communities. Climate change can significantly alter phytoplankton growth and proliferation, which would counteract restoration efforts to control algal blooms. However, the knowledge is limited about the quantitative evaluation of the causal effect of algal biomass resurgence in large shallow lakes where there is no significant improvement after long term lake restoration. Here, a bucket process-based phytoplankton dynamic model is developed to quantify the contributions of climate change and nutrients concentration changes to phytoplankton biomass resurgence after 2014 in hypereutrophic Lake Taihu, China. Compared to 2008-2014, the mean water temperature (WT) and the mean phosphate are higher, the mean photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), the mean total suspended solids (TSS), and the mean dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) are lower, during 2015-2020. Their contribution to algal biomass resurgence during 2015-2020 is WT (+58.7 %), PAR (-2.6 %), TSS (+23.2 %), DIN (-22.1 %) and phosphate (+42.7 %), respectively. Wastewater surveillance enables rapid pathogen monitoring and community prevalence estimation. However, how to design an integrated and tailored wastewater surveillance framework to monitor major health threats in metropolises remains a major challenge. In this study, we first analyzed the historical clinical data of Xi'an city and designed a wastewater surveillance framework covering five key endemic viruses, namely, SARS-CoV-2, norovirus, influenza A virus (IAV), influenza B virus (IBV), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and hantavirus. Amplicon sequencing of SARS-CoV-2, norovirus and hantavirus was conducted biweekly to determine the prevalent community genotypes circulating in this region. The results showed that from April 2023 to August 2023, Xi'an experienced two waves of SARS-CoV-2 infection, which peaked in the middle of May-2023 and late August-2023. The sewage concentrations of IAV and RSV peaked in early March and early May 2023, respectively, while the sewage concentrations of norovirus fluctuated throughout the study period and peaked in late August. The dynamics of the sewage concentrations of SARS-CoV-2, norovirus, IAV, RSV, and hantavirus were in line with the trends in the sentinel hospital percent positivity data, indicating the role of wastewater surveillance in enhancing the understanding of epidemic trends. Amplicon sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 revealed a transition in the predominant genotype, which changed from DY.1 and FR.1.4 to the XBB and EG.5 subvariants. Amplicon sequencing also revealed that there was only one predominant hantavirus genotype in the local population, while highly diverse genotypes of norovirus GI and GII were found in the wastewater. In conclusion, this study provided valuable insights into the dynamics of infection trends and predominant genotypes of key pathogens in a city without sufficient clinical surveillance, highlighting the role of a tailored wastewater surveillance framework in addressing public health priorities. The detrimental effects of heavy metal accumulation on both ecosystems and public health have raised widespread concern. Source-specific risk assessment is crucial for developing effective strategies to prevent and control heavy metal contamination in surface water. This study aims to investigate the contamination characteristics of heavy metals in the Yangtze River Basin, identifying the pollution sources, assessing the risk levels, and further evaluating the health risks to humans. The results indicated that the average concentrations of heavy metals were ranked as follows: zinc (Zn) > arsenic (As) > copper (Cu) > chromium (Cr) > cadmium (Cd) > nickel (Ni) > lead (Pb), with average concentrations of 38.02 μg/L, 4.34 μg/L, 2.53 μg/L, 2.10 μg/L, 1.17 μg/L, 0.84 μg/L, and 0.32 μg/L, respectively, all below the WHO 2017 standards for safe drinking water. The distribution trend indicates higher concentrations in the upper and lower reaches and lower concentrations in the mid-reaches of the river. By integrating the Absolute Principal Component Scores-Multiple Linear Regression (APCS-MLR) receptor model and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model, the main sources of heavy metals were identified as industrial activities (APCS-MLR: 41.3 %; PMF: 42.1 %), agricultural activities (APCS-MLR: 30.1 %; PMF: 27.4 %), and unknown mix sources (APCS-MLR: 29.1 %; PMF: 30.4 %). The calculation of the hazard index (HI) for both children and adults was <1, indicating no non-carcinogenic or carcinogenic risks. Based on the source-specific risk assessment, agricultural activities contribute the most to non-carcinogenic risks, while industrial activities pose the greatest contribution to carcinogenic risks. Research on High Spatial-Resolved Source-Specific Exposure and Risk (HSRSSER) was conducted based on multiple-year, multiple-site synchronous measurement of PM 2.5 -bound (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter<2.5 μm) toxic components in a Chinese megacity. The developed HSRSSER model combined the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) and Land Use Regression (LUR) to predict high spatial-resolved source contributions, and estimated the source-specific exposure and risk by personal activity time- and population-weighting. A total of 287 PM 2.5 samples were collected at ten sites in 2018-2020, and toxic species including heavy metals (HMs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) were analyzed. The percentage non-cancer risk were in the order of traffic emission (48 %) > industrial emission (22 %) > coal combustion (12 %) > waste incineration (11 %) > resuspend dust (7 %) > OPE-related products (0 %) ≈ secondary particles (0 %). Similar orders were observed in cancer risk. Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are industrial chemicals that have potential adverse effects in the environment and on human health. This study investigated CPs in apiary environment, honeybees, and bee products from two rural areas of Beijing, China. The median concentrations of short-chain CPs (SCCPs) and medium-chain CPs (MCCPs) were 22 and 1.6 ng/m 3 in the ambient air, 1350 and 708 ng/g dry mass (dw) in bees, 1050 and 427 ng/g dw in flowers, 37 and 54 ng/g in honey, 78 and 53 ng/g dw in bee pollen, 36 and 30 ng/g dw in soil, and 293 and 319 ng/g dw in bee wax. C 10 Cl 6-7 and C 14 Cl 7-8 dominated SCCPs and MCCPs in these samples, respectively. The concentrations and distributions of CPs in samples from apiaries located in the two regions varied. Long-range transportation of air masses was identified as an important source of CPs in apiaries. A close relationship between CPs in bees and the apiary environment indicated that bees could act as bioindicators for CP contamination in the environment. Parabens and triclocarban are widely applied as antimicrobial preservatives in foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and personal care products. However, few studies have been conducted on large-scale biomonitoring of parabens and triclocarban in the Chinese general population. In the present study, there were 1157 urine samples collected from 26 Chinese provincial capitals for parabens and triclocarban measurement to evaluate the exposure levels, spatial distribution, and influencing factors, as well as associated health risks in the Chinese population. The median concentrations of Σparabens and triclocarban were 14.0 and 0.03 μg/L, respectively. Methyl paraben was the predominant compound. Subjects in western China were more exposed to parabens, possibly due to climate differences resulting in higher consumption of personal care products. Subjects who were female, aged 18-44 years, or had a higher education level were found to have higher paraben concentrations. The frequency of drinking bottled water was positively associated with paraben exposure. The assessment of health risk based on urinary paraben concentrations indicated that 0.8 % of the subjects had a hazard index exceeding one unit, while Monte Carlo analysis suggested that 3.6 % of the Chinese population exposure to parabens had a potential non-carcinogenic risk. Decentralized agriculture, improper monitoring of cultivation conditions, and leaching of contaminants into lands led to the contamination of crops with various potentially toxic elements (PTEs). However, it is essential to know more about the profile level and associated risk of these contaminants and their origin, especially in high-water content crops. This study aimed to investigate the concentration of PTEs in melons of one of Iran's southern cities and follow that health risk assessment in the target population for the first time. Results of the present study confirmed that although the mean concentration of some metals was lower than the safety standard (Cr: 4.6 ± 2 mg/kg and Pb: 7.4 ± 4 mg/kg), their nutritional value was unfavorable regarding some micronutrients (Cu: 88.8 ± 27 mg/kg and Zn: 480 ± 275 mg/kg). The highest metal concentration in cantaloupe was iron (1706.47 mg/kg, p-value<0.05), and nitrate concentration in all melon types was 2.59-524.54 mg/kg (p-value<0.05). Principal component analysis (PCA) with K-means clustering and the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model have shown that contaminants in melons originated from human activities. So, excessive use of agricultural fertilizers is a possible source of nitrates in melons, which have 93 % of factor loading values. The health risk assessment also showed that melons' carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk using the deterministic method was lower than the permissible limit (HQ < 1, ILCR 1 in the children group for the 95th percentile. Furthermore, the level of certainty in the carcinogenesis risk for children, women, and men was estimated at 86.48 %, 64.67 %, and 61.30 %, respectively. Also, the consumption rate was determined as the most important parameter in the sensitivity analysis. Estuarine-offshore sediments accumulate substantial particulate organic matter, containing organic sulfur as a key component. However, the distribution and sources of organic sulfur in such environments remain poorly understood. This study investigated organic sulfur in the Yangtze River Estuary and adjacent East China Sea. Dissolved organic sulfur varied from 0.65 to 1.99 μmol/L (molar S:C 0.006-0.018), while particulate organic sulfur ranged from 0.42 to 2.69 μmol/L (molar S:C 0.007-0.082). Sedimentary organic sulfur exhibited a similar molar S:C ratio (0.014-0.071) to particulate organic sulfur in bottom water, implying that particulate matter deposition is a potential source. Furthermore, sediments exposed to frequent hypoxia harbored significantly higher organic sulfur and S:C values compared to non-hypoxic areas. Laboratory incubation experiments revealed the underlying mechanism: sustained activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria in hypoxic sediments led to a substantial increase in sedimentary organic sulfur (from 15 to 53 μmol/g) within 600 days. This microbially driven sulfurization rendered over 90 % of the organic sulfur resistant to acid hydrolysis. Therefore, this study demonstrates that, alongside particle deposition, microbial sulfurization significantly contributes to organic sulfur enrichment and likely promotes organic matter preservation in estuarine-offshore sediments, particularly under hypoxic conditions. Iron-bound organic carbon (OC-Fe R ) is important for the stability of soil organic carbon (SOC) in salt marshes, and the Spartina alterniflora invasion reshaped local salt marshes and changed the SOC pool. To evaluate the effects of S. alterniflora invasion on the contribution of OC-Fe R to SOC, we determined the OC-Fe R content and soil characteristics in the 0-50 cm soil profile along the vegetation sequence, including mudflats (MF), S. alterniflora marshes established in 2003 (SA03) and 1989 (SA89), the ecotone of S. alterniflora and Phragmites australis (SE), S. salsa marsh (SS), and P. australis marsh (PA). The SOC content was 6.55-17.5 mg g -1 in the S. alterniflora marshes. Reactive iron oxides (Fe d , Fe o , Fe p ) accumulated significantly in the S. alterniflora and P. australis salt marshes. PA and S. alterniflora marshes had higher DOC contents of 0.28-0.77 mg g -1 . The OC-Fe R content in the 0-50 cm soil profile in these ecosystems ranged from 0.3 to 3.29 mg g -1 , with a contribution to the SOC content (f OC-FeR ) of approximately 11 %, which was highest in SA03 (16.3 % ~ 18.8 %), followed by SA89, SE, and PA. In addition, the molar ratios of OC-Fe R to Fe d were <1, indicating that the iron oxides were associated with SOC through sorption more than coprecipitation. According to the structural equation model, SOC, DOC and iron oxides were the direct driving factors of OC-Fe R formation, while the vegetation zone indirectly functioned by regulating organic C inputs, iron oxide formation, and pH. Steroid hormones are highly potent compounds that can disrupt the endocrine systems of aquatic organisms. This study explored the spatiotemporal distribution of 49 steroid hormones in agricultural soils, ditch water, and sediment from suburban areas of Guangzhou City, China. The average concentrations of Σsteroid hormones in the water, soils, and sediment were 97.7 ng/L, 4460 ng/kg, and 9140 ng/kg, respectively. Elevated hormone concentrations were notable in water during the flood season compared to the dry season, whereas an inverse trend was observed in soils and sediment. These observations were attributed to illegal wastewater discharge during the flood season, and sediment partitioning of hormones and manure fertilization during the dry season. Correlation analysis further showed that population, precipitation, and number of slaughtered animals significantly influenced the spatial distribution of steroid hormones across various districts. Moreover, there was substantial mass transfer among the three media, with steroid hormones predominantly distributed in the sediment (60.8 %) and soils (34.4 %). Risk quotients, calculated as the measured concentration and predicted no-effect concentration, exceeded 1 at certain sites for some hormones, indicating high risks. The role of forest ecosystems in the global mercury (Hg) biogeochemical cycle is widely recognized; however, using litterfall as a surrogate to assess the Hg sink function of forests encounters limitations. We investigated the accumulation characteristics and influencing factors of Hg in mosses from two remote subalpine forests in southwestern China. The results indicated that there was high Hg accumulation in subalpine forest mosses, with average concentrations of 82 ± 49 ng g -1 for total mercury (THg) and 1.3 ± 0.8 ng g -1 for methylmercury (MeHg). We demonstrated that the accumulation capacity of Hg in mosses was significantly dependent on species and substrates (micro-habitats), the mosses on tree trunks exhibited significantly elevated Hg accumulation levels (THg 132 ± 56 ng g -1 , MeHg 1.6 ± 0.2 ng g -1 ) compared to mosses in other substrates. The surface morphologies and biochemical components of leaf (phyllidia), such as cation exchange capacity (CEC), pectin, uronic acid, and metallothionein, play a crucial role in the accumulation of Hg by mosses. These findings provide valuable insights into Hg accumulation in forest mosses. Contaminants may induce immune response polarization, leading to immune diseases, such as allergic diseases. Evidence concerning the effects of chlorinated paraffins (CPs), an emerging persistent organic pollutant, on immune system is scarce, particularly for epidemiological evidence. This study explores the association between CPs exposure and allergic diseases (allergic rhinitis, atopic eczema, and allergic conjunctivitis) in children and adolescents in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in China. Herein, 131,304 children and adolescents from primary and secondary schools in the PRD were included and completed the questionnaire survey. The particulate matter (PM) samples were collected in the PRD and the PM 2.5 -bound CP concentrations were analyzed. In the multivarious adjustment mixed effect model (MEM), an IQR increase in ∑CPs was significantly associated with allergic diseases (rhinitis, eczema, and conjunctivitis) with the estimated odds ratios (ORs) for 1.11 (95% CI: 1.10, 1.13), 1.17 (95% CI: 1.15, 1.19), and 1.82 (95% CI: 1.76, 1.88), respectively. Interaction analysis indicated that overweight and obese individuals might have greater risk. Similar effect estimates were observed in several sensitivity analyses. This study provided epidemiological evidence on the immunotoxicity of CPs. Background: Compare the differences between normal newborns and high-risk children with inherited metabolic diseases. The disease profile includes amino acidemias, fatty acid oxidation disorders, and organic acidemias., Methods: Data was collected on newborns and children from high-risk populations in Shanghai from December 2010 to December 2020., Results: 232,561 newborns were screened for disorders of organic, amino acid, and fatty acid metabolism. The initial positive rate was 0.66 % (1,526/232,561) and the positive recall rate was 77.85 %. The positive predictive value is 4.71 %. Among them, 56 cases were diagnosed as metabolic abnormalities. The total incidence rate is 1:4153. Hyperphenylalaninemia and short-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase are the most common diseases in newborns. In addition, in 56 children, 39 (69.42 %) were diagnosed by genetic sequencing. Some hotspot mutations in 14 IEMs have been observed, including PAH gene c.728G > A, c.611A > G, and ACADS gene c. 1031A > G, c.164C > T. A total of 49,860 symptomatic patients were screened, of which 185 were diagnosed with IEM, with a detection rate of 0.37 %. The most commonly diagnosed diseases in high-risk infants aremethylmalonic acidemia and hyperphenylalaninemia., Conclusion: There are more clinical cases of congenital metabolic errors diagnosed by tandem mass spectrometry than newborn screening. Objective: To investigate the effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) on puberty in boys., Methods: 695 subjects were selected from four primary schools in Chongqing, China. 675 urine samples from these boys were collected four PAH metabolites: 1-hydroxypyrene, 2-hydroxynaphthoic, 2-hydroxyfluorene, and 9-hydroxyphenanthrene. Pubertal development of 695 boys was assessed at follow-up visits starting in December 2015 and occurring every six months thereafter until now, data used in this article ending in June 2021. A total of 12 follow-up visits were performed. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to analyze the relationship between PAH metabolite concentrations and indicators of pubertal timing., Results: The mean age at puberty onset of testicular volume, facial hair, pubic hair, first ejaculation, and axillary hair in boys was 11.66, 12.43, 12.51, 12.72 and 13.70 years, respectively. Background: Exposure to PM 2.5 has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases, with limited understanding of constituent-specific contributions., Objectives: To explore the associations between long-term exposure to PM 2.5 constituents and neurodegenerative diseases., Methods: We recruited 148,274 individuals aged ≥ 60 from four cities in the Pearl River Delta region, China (2020 to 2021). We calculated twenty-year average air pollutant concentrations (PM 2.5 mass, black carbon (BC), organic matter (OM), ammonium (NH 4 + ), nitrate (NO 3 - ) and sulfate (SO 4 2- )) at the individuals' home addresses. Neurodegenerative diseases were determined by self-reported doctor-diagnosed Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Generalized linear mixed models were employed to explore associations between pollutants and neurodegenerative disease prevalence., Results: PM 2.5 and all five constituents were significantly associated with a higher prevalence of AD and PD. The observed associations generally exhibited a non-linear pattern. For example, compared with the lowest quartile, higher quartiles of BC were associated with greater odds for AD prevalence (i.e., the adjusted odds ratios were 1.81; 95% CI, 1.45-2.27; 1.78; 95% CI, 1.37-2.32; and 1.99; 95% CI, 1.54-2.57 for the second, third, and fourth quartiles, respectively)., Conclusions: Long-term exposure to PM 2.5 and its constituents, particularly combustion-related BC, OM, and SO 4 2- , was significantly associated with higher prevalence of AD and PD in Chinese individuals., Environmental Implication: PM 2.5 is a routinely regulated mixture of multiple hazardous constituents that can lead to diverse adverse health outcomes. In lake ecosystems, pelagic-benthic coupling strength (PBCS) is closely related to foodweb structure and pollutant transport. However, the trophic transfer of antibiotics in a benthic-pelagic coupling foodweb (BPCFW) and the manner in which PBCS influences the trophic magnification factor (TMFs) of antibiotics is still not well understood in the whole lake. Herein, the trophic transfer behavior of 12 quinolone antibiotics (QNs) in the BPCFW of Baiyangdian Lake were studied during the period of 2018-2019. It was revealed that 24 dominant species were contained in the BPCFW, and the trophic level was 0.42-2.94. Seven QNs were detected in organisms, the detection frequencies of ofloxacin (OFL), flumequine (FLU), norfloxacin (NOR), and enrofloxacin (ENR) were higher than other QNs. The ∑QN concentration in all species was 11.3-321 ng/g dw. The TMFs for ENR and NOR were trophic magnification, while for FLU/OFL it was trophic dilution. The PBCS showed spatial-temporal variation, with a range of 0.6977-0.7910. The TMFs of ENR, FLU, and OFL were significantly positively correlated with PBCS. Phytoplankton and macrophyte biomasses showed indirect impact on the TMFs of QNs by directly influencing the PBCS.
