The Huangpu River, which flows into the Yangtze Estuary, runs through Shanghai Municipality in China. During the flood season, typhoon-induced surges result in extremely high water levels in the Huangpu River, which is the main factor threatening flood control safety in Shanghai. Based on observations of water levels at three stations along the Huangpu River from 2008 to 2021, together with wind and rainfall, this paper investigates: the trends of the annual highest storm surges; the differences in periodic variation and magnitude of surges during the spring-neap cycle; the longitudinal variation of surges; and the impact of rainfall. The results show that the annual highest surges at three stations all show a significant increasing trend, which is caused by the increasing wind speed, and the intensity and duration of rainfall during typhoon events, induced by the increasing frequency of landfall and close-to-YE (Yangtze Estuary) typhoon events, and strong and very strong typhoon events. The periodic variation and magnitude of surges show clear differences during the spring-neap cycle, resulting from the largest nonlinear surge-tide interaction during spring tide and the smallest during neap tide. Heavy rainfall can reduce the probability of 6–7 h and 2.7–3.3 h periods, and change the phase of the periodic variation, inducing partial main peaks and maximum surges during ebb or low tide. The longitudinal variation of storm surge along the Huangpu River can be divided into three types: decreasing upstream, first increasing then decreasing, and increasing upstream. Heavy and long-duration rainfall increases the water discharge from the basin to the river, amplifying the surge, with the largest impact in the upper reach and the smallest in the lower reach, which is the main factor inducing the latter two types, particularly the third type. • Typhoon-induced surge heights show a significant increasing trend in recent years. • Periodic variation and magnitude of surges show clear differences during a spring-neap cycle. • The longitudinal variations of storm surge show different characteristics. • Heavy rainfall amplifies the storm surge, changes its phase, and influences its longitudinal variation. Cities have become significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Effective land management may be the solution to carbon neutrality targets for megacities with limited land resources. This paper takes Shanghai as a case study to investigate the regional land use dynamics and its impact on carbon emissions following the implementation of land conservation and intensive use policy. During 2010–2020, the land use pattern in Shanghai changed from the previous urban land expansion to a combination of industrial land reduction and woodland expansion. Meanwhile, the area proportion of land-use mixture grids increased from 90.50% to 92.28% with the spatial pattern of mixed types also changing. Furthermore, the notable land-use mixture does not necessarily lead to carbon emission reduction, but it can reduce carbon emission hotspots in industrial agglomerations by promoting the mixed use of industrial land and other land use types. However, megacities cannot achieve carbon balance through land use management alone. Due to the increasing carbon emission density of hybrid industrial land, the joint implementation of a land conservation and intensive use strategy with industrial and energy structure adjustments may be an effective way forward. Previous research papers on urban water resources accounting were confined to the perspectives of production and consumption, ignoring the perspective of income. This paper proposes a systems framework to analyze the income, production, and consumption-based water uses and underlying driving forces of a city based on the methods of multi-scale input-output analysis and structural decomposition analysis. A case study is performed for Shanghai as a megacity. The results show that the income, production and consumption-based water uses of Shanghai had decreased from 5.70 billion m3, 10.85 billion m3 and 28.45 billion m3 in 2007 to 2.80 billion m3, 6.20 billion m3 and 24.10 billion m3 in 2017, respectively. Domestic imported primary inputs had emerged as an important virtual water supplier of Shanghai and its share of total supply-side water use had increased from 23.92% in 2007 to 42.95% in 2017. Meanwhile, about 46% and 40% of Shanghai's total consumption-based water use had been imported from other Chinese regions and foreign countries in 2017, respectively. It is revealed that trade played an important role in relieving water use pressure in Shanghai. The factors that had increased the uses of water resources in Shanghai include population, per capita value-added, per capita output, final consumption structure, and per capita final consumption. The factors that had reduced the water uses in Shanghai include technology, value added mix, output structure, value added structure, domestic import, commodity mix, and foreign import. During the three-month long Sino-Japanese hostilities in the summer of 1937, Shanghai industries suffered the heaviest loss ever sustained during any previous military conflict in the city. Yet as has been shown in a previous study, local industries seem to have recovered fairly quickly. All statistics point to a return to pre-war levels of production in most sectors by the end of 1938 in some cases and during 1939 for most industrial branches. The purpose of this paper is to try to highlight the spatial dynamics at work in this recovery process. It relies not just on original sources, but on the unique capabilities GIS offers in processing large amounts of historical data and exploring connected issues in land use, demography, and urban life. The paper argues that Shanghai industries went through a thorough phase of relocation and migration within the city, but also of inbound migration from the surrounding regions. This study is based on a particular set of documents produced by the Shanghai Municipal Council, the largely independent body that administered the International Settlement. In this study, therefore, I shall argue that what happened in the territory of the International Settlement mirrored what happened next door and possibly in other parts of the Chinese-administered/Japanese-occupied areas. Farmer-led agricultural innovation is increasingly viewed as a potential approach to sustainable agriculture especially promoting rural revitalization as well as mitigating agricultural non-point source pollution. However, little research has yet been paid to evaluating the environmental contribution caused by these emerging agricultural innovations. Using data generated in the Qingpu District of Shanghai, this paper focuses on the new agri-business entities and evaluates the impact of agricultural innovation on changes in their use of chemical fertilizers. The findings indicate that different forms of agricultural innovation have radically different outcomes. Innovation of new production technologies and sales tend to have negative impacts on the environment, while both vertical integration with manufacturing-processing-sales activities, and horizontal integration with service activities, are found to make a positive environmental contribution. The paper argues that the different sources of value added generated by innovation provide different incentives for farmers. Those with a narrow concentration on efficiency and market scale tend to intensify their output-maximized production, while those shifting to processing and service activities rely more on the quality and service centered production, which tends to create less damage to the environment. • Agricultural innovation is becoming a critical part of sustainable agriculture, but little has been known about the environmental contributions. • Agricultural Innovation with a narrow concentration on production efficiency and market scales is found with negative environmental contributions. • Both vertical and horizontal agricultural Integrations contribute to the reduction of chemical fertilizer use. • Supporting policies are required to guide behavior changes of new agri-business entities for sustainable agricultural development. Few studies were conducted for associations of home environment with childhood health by on-site inspection in China. During 2013–2014, we conducted a case-control study with home inspection among 454 children (186 asthma children and 268 non-asthma children) in Shanghai, China. In this paper, we detailedly described the inspected methods and analyzed the preliminarily collected data. Except in winter, most residences meet the national standard for indoor temperature and relative humidity. Most living rooms had ≤1000 ppm CO 2 , whereas over half of the child's bedrooms had slightly >1000 ppm CO 2 during night. Most residences had notably lower than 2500 cfu/m 3 airborne culturable fungi and ≤100 μg/m 3 formaldehyde. More than 70% of the child's bedrooms had ≤75 μg/m 3 PM 2.5 and ≤150 μg/m 3 PM 10 . Indoor and outdoor concentrations of particulate matters had strong linear correlations ( r =0.891–0.922; p -value <0.001). Most differences between cases and controls were not significant with respect to CO 2 , culturable fungi, formaldehyde, and particulate matters. Before and after adjusted for potential confounders, indoor averaged concentration of CO 2 and particulate matters generally had negative associations with childhood history of doctor-diagnosed asthma in spring, summer, and autumn. Only in winter, indoor CO 2 concentration was significantly associated with the increased odds of childhood asthma. Our results indicated that air quality among most residences in Shanghai could meet the national standard for indoor air quality in warm seasons; but household air quality and ventilation status in winter should be greatly improved. We suspected that those “unexpected” negative associations could exist due to changes in lifestyle behaviors regarding indoor air quality after the child being diagnosed asthma by a doctor. China has begun a new round of electricity market reform since 2015, aiming to transform the regulated form into a competitive one. Since the generation cost of clean energy is still relatively high compared to coal-fired power plants, the major source of the energy sector in China, the environmental outcomes from market reform would remain uncertain. Therefore, green policies play a critical role during the process of reform and hence would determine whether China can achieve the goal of carbon-neutral in 2060. In light of these concerns, this paper performed a simulation study based on the agent-based model (ABM) to analyze the market performance and environmental conditions after reform. Our results demonstrate that given current cost disadvantages, the market share will flow to coal-fired power plants in the competitive electricity market without the support of green policies, resulting in the increase of CO2, NOX, SO2, and smoke emissions by 4.85 %, −1.7 %, 6.48 %, and 6.86 %. Further scenario analysis shows that to improve such environmental outcomes, policies should focus on pushing the replacement of coal-fired energy, either by renewable or gas energy. The simulation results of green policy scenarios demonstrate significant co-benefits, that carbon and other pollution emissions will decrease simultaneously. Despite the environmental gain from green policies, results of the policy efficiency analysis indicates that the FIT on renewable energy is the least effective, while pollution tax turns to be the most effective. Our results imply that green policies should be well considered when constructing the competitive electricity market in China, to effectively achieve both the national carbon-neutral and local environmental goals. • Green policies should be well designed during electricity market reform. • The environmental condition may get worse without green policies. • Green policies in the electricity market in China should focus on the replacement of coal-fired energy. • Green policies demonstrate significant environmental co-benefits on carbon and pollution control in the energy sector. • Pollution tax in the electricity market shows the highest efficiency. The Suzhou Creek Rehabilitation Project (SCRP) is one of the largest water-related environmental rehabilitation schemes ever undertaken in the vicinity of Shanghai, China. This paper details the development and application of a River Environmental Decision Support System (REDSS) for scientific planning and decision-making on the Suzhou Creek project, and illustrates the flexibility of the REDSS framework. We developed the following components: (1) a GIS-based analysis employing Component technology; (2) a “data mart” for multi-dimensional, multi-level, integrated, dynamic, and flexible data querying; and (3) a set of hydrodynamic and water quality models which can simulate complex tidal river networks. In addition, we detail how a water quality assessment model is embedded into the REDSS by employing an Identification Index Method. With the REDSS, all GIS and non-GIS components are integrated seamlessly and data from different sources can be queried simultaneously. This allows for various scenarios to be simulated and analyzed in advance to predict and assess the effects of proposed engineering and management measures. Generated information can thus support effective decisions. All operations of the REDSS can be implemented conveniently through user-friendly interfaces. The function of the REDSS framework is demonstrated through an application to Suzhou Creek. Because the REDSS characteristics are quite general, it may be applied in different geographic regions. In this paper we conducted a hypothetical choice experiment in Shanghai, China, to examine whether the China Energy Efficiency Label influences consumers'' choices of air conditioners and refrigerators. A latent class approach was applied to observe both heterogeneities among the respondents and product brands. Our results suggested that consumers in Shanghai were well aware of the China Energy Efficiency Label and tended to pay more attention to products with such labels. In addition, air conditioners and refrigerators affixed with a hypothetical label that indicates saving in electricity bills compared with a standard model received significant preferences, which suggested that the more information manufacturers provide, the more their products would be preferred by consumers. Finally, weighted by class probability, the willingness to pay values for more energy efficient refrigerators were higher than those for more energy efficient air conditioners, implying that Shanghai consumers have greater incentive to pay more for appliances they use more frequently. Abstract: Shanghai is a cosmopolitan city and one of the most important economic centers in China, but is saddled with serious environmental problems resulting from a recent industrial transformation. This paper examines the interactive relationships between economic growth, eco-efficiency of urban metabolism, and environmental performance of the Shanghai metropolitan area since the 1990s using 15 indicators. This study has revealed an enhanced eco-efficiency of water and energy use as well as an improved overall environmental quality in the central urban districts of Shanghai. Both TGDP (total GDP) and GDP per capita increased rapidly at the annual rate of 16.28% and 15.91%, respectively. In contrast, energy consumed per 10000RMB YUAN GDP (ECG), water consumed per 10000RMB YUAN GDP (WCG), wastewater discharged per 10000RMB YUAN GDP (WWDG), and waste gases emitted per 10000RMB YUAN GDP (WGEG) decreased at the annual rate of 9.34%, 10.69%, 14.57%, and 8.52%, respectively. The rapid decline in ECG, WCG, WWDG, and WGEG indicates an enhanced eco-efficiency of urban metabolism. However, uncontrolled emission of wastes from domestic instead of industrial sources adversely affected the overall environmental quality. In addition, suburban areas have undergone rapid economic growth at the cost of human health deterioration, as measured by mortalities and relative mortality ratios of three major diseases (tumor, respiratory disease, and trauma/toxicosis). With Shanghai serving as the “locomotive” driving the economy of the Yangtze River Basin, effective pollution control policies and a network of regional coordination are urgently needed in the globalization and ecological security of the entire area. The impact of mandatory policies on residents' willingness to separate waste and how they respond to such measures is not clearly understood. To answer this question, based on deterrence theory, theories of belief change, the theory of rational behavior, and the theory of cognitive consistency, this paper established a mechanism model for the impact of mandatory policies on residents' willingness to separate waste, and analyzed the roles of attitude, subjective norms, and new ecological paradigms. Through a questionnaire survey of 442 ordinary residents in Shanghai, hierarchical regression and bootstrapping analysis were used to verify the above model. The results showed that:(1) mandatory policies positively affected residents' attitude and subjective norms toward waste separation; (2) through the mediation of attitude and subjective norms, mandatory policies positively affected residents' willingness to separate waste; and (3) the new ecological paradigm moderated the above effects. For residents with higher ecological paradigm, the positive influence of mandatory policies on attitudes and subjective norms was stronger, and the mediation effect of attitude and subjective norms was also stronger. • Mandatory policy can improve residents' willingness to waste separation. • Attitudes and subjective norms play a mediation role. • The impact of mandatory policy is moderated by the new ecological paradigm. Based on the diffusion of innovation theory (DOI), this paper aims to explore the potential factors that influence user satisfaction with new energy vehicles (NEVs). Furthermore, we introduce the term "personal environmental awareness" (PEA) and attempt to examine its contingent effects. A moderated hierarchical linear regression analysis (MHLRA) method is conducted to analyze the data collected from a field survey of 335 early-drivers of NEVs. Empirical results show that experiences related to usefulness, experience of ease-of-use, total cost, driving range, and infrastructure readiness are important factors that influence user satisfaction with NEVs. In the case of moderating effects, we found that PEA might strengthen the positive effects of experienced usefulness, experienced ease-of-use, driving range, and infrastructure readiness in terms of user satisfaction with NEVs. However, the moderating role of PEA in the relationship between total cost and user satisfaction is not statistically significant. With prices soaring in Chinese superstar cities (i.e., Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen), housing is becoming increasingly unaffordable. This paper investigates whether housing unaffordability crowds out elites in Chinese superstar cities. Using both micro- and macro-level data from China's Urban Household Survey and China Statistical Yearbook for Regional Economy, we find that, in general, elites still prefer superstar cities. However, there is evidence that the attractiveness of superstar cities has declined over time. In addition, we find that the next-tier cities (i.e., alternative cities) become increasingly attractive to elites. These findings provide strong evidence of the crowding out effect on elites in Chinese superstar cities due to their housing unaffordability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
