Curl propensity is a critical-to-quality (CTQ) property of paper, as it causes severe problems during printing and other final conversion operations. The main papermaking factor causing the curl phenomenon is the existence of a fiber orientation (FO) gradient across the thickness direction (or ZD), also known as two-sidedness. Therefore, a methodology that characterizes the FO across the ZD is fundamental for papermakers. In this work, we propose and validate an efficient and cost-effective protocol based on sheet splitting and image analysis. Besides assessing the level of FO two-sidedness, the methodology also provides insights into the flow dynamics in the draining zone of the forming section of the paper machine and the drying stresses built into the paper. Forensic document examination has been considered one of the most important fields in the forensic science. For this, a quick, effective, and cheap techniques for evaluation of forensic evidence is highly required. This study explores the comparison of A4 document paper by chemical and physical analysis. 16 of white A4 paper from different brands were analyzed by FTIR for investigation of structural characteristics. Video Spectral Comparator 8000 has been used to compare the A4 papers under different light source. The inorganic filler composition in the paper is also explored by ICP‐OES. The calcium carbonate content in document papers play a discriminant role which found to be between 16.02 % and 35.54 %. Also, water contact angle has been utilized in order to examine the surface of paper which is generally related to the inorganic filler and other additives. The WCA results ranged between 83° and 111° that enable quick and easy way to compare A4 document papers. The experimental results have demonstrated that besides FTIR methods, other methods such as ICP‐OES for elemental composition, WCA for wetting test, VSC for visualization under different light of source could have been applied for comparison of document papers in case of criminal cases. One of the most popular and well-established forms of payment in use today is paper money. Handling paper money might be challenging for those with vision impairments. Assistive technology has been reinventing itself throughout time to better serve the elderly and disabled people. To detect paper currency and extract other useful information from them, image processing techniques and other advanced technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning, etc., can be used. In this paper, we present a meticulously curated and comprehensive dataset named ‘NSTU-BDTAKA’ tailored for the simultaneous detection and recognition of a specific object of cultural significance - the Bangladeshi paper currency (in Bengali it is called ‘Taka’). This research aims to facilitate the development and evaluation of models for both taka detection and recognition tasks, offering a rich resource for researchers and practitioners alike. The dataset is divided into two distinct components: (i) taka detection, and (ii) taka recognition. The taka detection subset comprises 3,111 high-resolution images, each meticulously annotated with rectangular bounding boxes that encompass instances of the taka. These annotations serve as ground truth for training and validating object detection models, and we adopt the state-of-the-art YOLOv5 architecture for this purpose. In the taka recognition subset, the dataset has been extended to include a vast collection of 28,875 images, each showcasing various instances of the taka captured in diverse contexts and environments. The recognition dataset is designed to address the nuanced task of taka recognition providing researchers with a comprehensive set of images to train, validate, and test recognition models. This subset encompasses challenges such as variations in lighting, scale, orientation, and occlusion, further enhancing the robustness of developed recognition algorithms. The dataset NSTU-BDTAKA not only serves as a benchmark for taka detection and recognition but also fosters advancements in object detection and recognition methods that can be extrapolated to other cultural artifacts and objects. We envision that the dataset will catalyze research efforts in the field of computer vision, enabling the development of more accurate, robust, and efficient models for both detection and recognition tasks.

We have achieved a successful synthesis of a label-free, flexible, portable, and colour-indicating biosensor using cholesteric nanostructure liquid crystals (LCs), commonly referred to as cholesteric LCs (CLCs), on paper fibres. This innovative approach holds significant promise for rapid screening in precision medicine and other applications. We incorporated optically active nematic LCs in various configurations within CLCs, allowing them to rotate along different axes. When exposed to light, these LCs reflected light at specific wavelengths. By employing polarised optical microscopy and a charged couple device (CCD), we conducted titration experiments with bovine serum albumin (BSA) on the paper substrate and quantified protein concentrations based on the observed colour shifts. Utilising internal Python pixel analysis software, we evaluated the red, green, and blue colour components, which served as biomarkers for different BSA concentrations. Our results demonstrated a linear correlation between BSA concentration and colour variations. This CLC-based paper-substrate biosensor exhibits the potential to efficiently screen a large number of samples, thereby enhancing the diagnostic accuracy in clinical settings. Combining the colour-indicating and quantifiable attributes of CLCs with the affordability and portability of paper substrates, we have developed a versatile biosensor. BACKGROUND: This work proposes the use of a simple, inexpensive method for the hydrothermal synthesis of fluorescent carbon dot nanoparticles (CDs) from rice starch aimed at the determination of Hg2+ in water. The proposed method involved using a paper‐based analytical device coupled to a 3D plate, with a UV‐LED chamber and a smartphone for the acquisition and analysis of the fluorescence digital images of the CDs. RESULTS: The size of the carbon dots ranged from 0.5 to 3 nm, with an average particle size of ~1 nm. The functionalization of carbon dots with methimazole allowed a high selective for Hg2+ determination. The results obtained showed a linear response R2 of 0.997 and Hg2+ concentration in the range of 0.5–45.0 μmol L−1 with a limit of detection and limit of quantitation of 0.23 and 0.62 μmol L−1, respectively. The results of the study show that there were no significant differences, at 95% confidence level, between the data obtained from the application of the proposed method and the reference method. CONCLUSION: The proposed method is in line with the principles of green chemistry, as it involves the use of renewable sources for starch extraction and a hydrothermal synthesis process that does not employ toxic reagents. A user-friendly, cost-effectively, portable, and environmentally friendly colorimetric sensor for the quantitative determination of formaldehyde was developed based on the combining of microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD), headspace microextraction (HSME), and digital image colorimetry. Coupling HSME and μPAD led to enhancements in selectivity and sensitivity of the sensor through sample cleanup and analyte enrichment. To construct the μPAD-HSME device, two pieces of paper as the sample and detection zone were placed facing each other so that a small common and sealed space was created between them. The color change occurred when the analyte in the gaseous form crossed this gap and reached the detection zone. Colorimetric sensing in the detection zone was performed based on the Hantzsch reaction. The color change in the detection zone was recorded by a smartphone and digital images were processed using image analysis software based on the RGB model. The influence of some key variables on the sensitivity of the method including derivatization reagent composition, sample volume, extraction temperature, and extraction time was studied and optimized. The linear dynamic range of the method was obtained in two ranges of 0.10–0.75 and 0.75–5.0 mg L−1 with a limit of detection of 0.03 mg L−1. Flow and spontaneous imbibition phenomena in porous media are important for various industrial applications, including printing and medical lateral flow assays. Their quantitative characterization is important to better understand and select the appropriate raw materials. However, standard methods often require time-consuming tests, and/or expensive equipment. Different time scales must be considered, limiting the range of possible characterization tools. A novel experimental approach based on image analysis for characterizing spontaneous imbibition processes is presented. Hence, ultra-fast diffusion may be quantitatively characterized. Models are issued from the literature to consider physical phenomena at small (milliseconds) and medium range (seconds) of time scales. The obtained experimental data fit with theoretical results, providing valuable insights into the understanding of fluid flow behavior at different time scales. Furthermore, the identification of some physical properties for either the fluid, or the substrate, based on the theoretical models are possible, as the contact angle, which remains to be otherwise challenging. This study contributes to bridging the gap between spontaneous imbibition and capillary phenomena at different time scales, their modeling, and a characterization of material and/or fluid properties paving the way for enhanced understanding and control of fluid behavior in porous media. Sensor arrays, which draw inspiration from the mammalian olfactory system, are fundamental concepts in high-throughput analysis based on pattern recognition. Although numerous optical sensor arrays for various targets in aqueous media have demonstrated their diverse applications in a wide range of research fields, practical device platforms for on-site analysis have not been satisfactorily established. The significant limitations of these sensor arrays lie in their solution-based platforms, which require stationary spectrophotometers to record the optical responses in chemical sensing. To address this, this review focuses on paper substrates as device components for solid-state sensor arrays. Paper-based sensor arrays (PSADs) embedded with multiple detection sites having cross-reactivity allow rapid and simultaneous chemical sensing using portable recording apparatuses and powerful data-processing techniques. The applicability of office printing technologies has promoted the realization of PSADs in real-world scenarios, including environmental monitoring, healthcare diagnostics, food safety, and other relevant fields. In this review, we discuss the methodologies of device fabrication and imaging analysis technologies for pattern recognition-driven chemical sensing in aqueous media. This article introduces a novel approach by coupling paper points with hollow fiber membrane for electroextraction (PP–HF-EE). The method was innovatively applied to extract methylene blue (MB) from large water volumes (up to 580 mL). A comprehensive study of six key parameters – organic filter, acceptor and donor phase composition, extraction time, applied voltage, and sample volume – was conducted using conventional flatbed scanning and digital image analysis. Our results revealed that extraction performance was primarily influenced by time, with low voltages (50 V) and low-conductivity organic filters (1-decanol) yielding comparable results to higher settings (300 V or 1-pentanol). Under optimized conditions (50 V, 60 min, 1-decanol as the organic filter), analytical performance parameters were assessed, demonstrating acceptable precision (RSD <18% for intra- and inter-day measurements) within a linear range of 5–100 μg L−1 (r = 0.98). PP–HF–EE demonstrated reliability through stable and reproducible electric current measurements during all extraction studies. Utilizing an extremely cost-effective detection system, PP–HF–EE achieved detection limits in the low ppb range, highlighting its potential as a promising variation of electromembrane extraction for environmental sample analysis. Wearable eye‐tracking technology is an essential component in AR/VR devices. Conventional Pupil‐Corneal Reflection (PCR) eye‐tracking technology often presents challenges due to high costs and bulky designs, particularly for compact AR and smart glasses. To overcome these limitations, our next‐generation eyetracking technology relies on AI image analysis, significantly reducing the number of required IR LEDs and image sensors. This simplification enhances flexibility and lowers production costs while maintaining accuracy. Because the human eye cannot visually detect the results of direct bilirubin test papers accurately and quantitatively, this study proposes four different highly collimated mini light-emitting diodes (HC mini-LEDs) as light sources for detection. First, different concentrations of bilirubin were oxidized to biliverdin by FeCl3 on the test paper, and pictures were obtained with a smartphone. Next, the red, green, and blue (RGB) channels of the pictures were separated to average grayscale values, and their linear relationship with the direct bilirubin concentration was analyzed to detect bilirubin on the test paper noninvasively and quantitatively. The experimental results showed that when green HC mini-LEDs were used as the light sources and image analysis was performed using the G channel, for a direct bilirubin concentration range of 0.1–2 mg/dL, the G channel determination coefficient (R2) reached 0.9523 and limit of detection was 0.459 mg/dL. The detection method proposed herein has advantages such as rapid analysis, noninvasive detection, and digitization according to RGB grayscale changes in the images of the detection test paper. These papers demonstrate the potential of AI in improving accuracy, efficiency, and personalized treatment in medical image analysis. In insecure communication environments where the communication bandwidth is limited, important image data must be compressed and encrypted for transmission. However, existing image compression and encryption algorithms suffer from poor image reconstruction quality and insufficient image encryption security. To address these problems, this paper proposes an image-compression and encryption scheme based on a newly designed hyperchaotic system and two-dimensional compressed sensing (2DCS) technique. In this paper, the chaotic performance of this hyperchaotic system is verified by bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov diagrams, approximate entropy, and permutation entropy, which have certain advantages over the traditional 2D chaotic system. The new 2D chaotic system as a pseudo-random number generator can completely pass all the test items of NIST. Meanwhile, this paper improves on the existing 2D projected gradient (2DPG) algorithm, which improves the quality of image compression and reconstruction, and can effectively reduce the transmission pressure of image data confidential communication. In addition, a new image encryption algorithm is designed for the new 2D chaotic system, and the security of the algorithm is verified by experiments such as key space size analysis and encrypted image information entropy. With the continuous progress of science and technology, image processing techniques have been used increasingly in recent years. Image processing plays an indispensable role in the fields of computer vision, artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, and related fields. Improvements in basic algorithms and the development of new algorithms have resulted in considerable innovation and progress. This paper is devoted to finding new game applications in a branch of image processing. It introduces an analysis model proposed by the author and discusses the relationship between roughness in the frequency domain and visual image interpretation. By using the concept of roughness, we separated the image features into meaningful information and residual information and analysed the image in the frequency domain. The results were compared with those of traditional image processing methods. The starting point is the visual identification of a feature based on human interpretation. The image information was separated into meaningful features and the residual component to reduce the redundancy of the model. This allowed for a sparse representation of the feature information in the image. By analysing the meaningful features and residual components of an image separately, we established a relationship between the results and the original images. Parameters such as texture, morphology, and the degree of blurring were considered and we developed a parameter called "frequency roughness". The algorithm incorporates the concepts of frequency and roughness and the roughness is determined in the frequency domain. The frequency roughness algorithm successfully separated the rough features in the frequency domain and calculated the residual value in an image. This model provided more accurate image processing results than comparable methods. This paper includes an analysis and game applications of the proposed model for de-blurring, image enhancement, recognition, and other image processing tasks. A semi-hydroponic system was developed to assess canola (Brassica napus L.) root architectural traits. Four cultivars were grown under controlled conditions in germination paper rolls immersed in half-strength Hoagland's solution. Eight parameters, including total root length, total root surface area, average root diameter, tip number, total primary root length, total lateral root length, total tertiary root length, and basal link length, were analyzed using the WinRHIZO software after 7, 14, and 21 days. The results suggested that 14 days in the semi-hydroponic system were optimal for accurate root trait assessment, as clear differences were observed while maintaining ease of handling and scanning. The visual signal object detection technology of deep learning, as a high-precision perception technology, can be adopted in various image analysis applications, and it has important application prospects in the utilization and protection of marine biological resources. While the marine environment is generally far from cities where the rich computing power in cities cannot be utilized, deploying models on mobile edge devices is an efficient solution. However, because of computing resource limitations on edge devices, the workload of performing deep learning-based computationally intensive object detection on mobile edge devices is often insufficient in meeting high-precision and low-latency requirements. To address the problem of insufficient computing resources, this paper proposes a lightweight process based on a neural structure search and knowledge distillation using deep learning YOLOv8 as the baseline model. Firstly, the neural structure search algorithm was used to compress the YOLOv8 model and reduce its computational complexity. Secondly, a new knowledge distillation architecture was designed, which distills the detection head output layer and NECK feature layer to compensate for the accuracy loss caused by model reduction. When compared to YOLOv8n, the computational complexity of the lightweight model optimized in this study (in terms of floating point operations (FLOPs)) was 7.4 Gflops, which indicated a reduction of 1.3 Gflops. The multiply–accumulate operations (MACs) stood at 2.72 G, thereby illustrating a decrease of 32%; this saw an increase in the AP50, AP75, and mAP by 2.0%, 3.0%, and 1.9%, respectively. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is becoming one of the major causes of morbidity and mortalities in 21st century. We have developed a bioengineered cellulosic paper device for the quantification of albumin (ALB) in physiological samples. The paper surface was activated and antibodies specific to target biomarker was immobilized on engineered paper surface. Every step after modification was characterized by FTIR, XPS, SPM and optical analysis. Further, the device model was designed using CAD file, and a 3-D cascade device was fabricated with in-built constant light source to provide proper and controlled environment for in-situ image analysis. After adding the sample on the bioengineered paper, the antigen-antibody reaction takes place, after that addition of dye results in change of color from yellow to blueish-green within 40 s. An optical method was employed for the analysis of the images by recognizing the specific area and the color intensity. Additionally, the immunosensor specificity was evaluated on number of molecules that are usually found in the serum sample. The linear dynamic range of the developed immunosensor has been reported to be 1–60 mg/mL, covering the normal as well as clinical range of ALB in physiological samples with a detection limit of 0.049(±0.002) mg/mL. With good precision and recovery, the device was able to successfully determine the ALB concentrations in serum sample. The deep sea has abundant resources and is regarded as the "sixth continent" that humans can use. Although research on the deep sea has made some progress, its exploration is not deep enough. The acquisition and analysis of deep-sea images can provide important technical means for deep-sea exploration and the acquisition of information. However, there is currently no complete underwater image dataset. For this reason, this paper is the first deep-sea visual dataset of the South China Sea, contains over 100 TB videos and 1 million high quality images. This paper also applies the dataset to underwater image enhancement and image superresolution, and the experiment proves the effectiveness of the dataset. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Video processing is the most emergent area of image processing in Research and Development. This paper, we present some advanced technology interrelated to video and image processing, which will provide a super-resolution high-quality most prominent visible light video for better human visualization and background motions or gesticulations of the human brain. There are two approaches for increasing the current resolution level of an image. The first one is the improvement of spatial resolution by reducing the size of pixels through the techniques of sensor manufacturing by about 40 $ {\mathcal{M}}{\textrm{m}^2} $ M m 2 for a 0.35 $ {\mathcal{M}}\textrm{m} $ M m CMOS process and the second approach is the enhancement of chip size that also enhances the capacitance. In video processing, we mainly focus on object images, i.e. any form of signal processing in which the input is an image and the output is a photograph or a frame of video. So, it will be better to converge over techniques of digital image processing. In the proposed algorithm (MHI Simulink model), edge extraction is performed to find the precious area of MRI and CT-Scan images. Using FPGA, edge detection methods have been implemented over scanned images to get better accuracy. The accuracy of the proposed method has been compared with Prewitt and Sobel's edge detection techniques. The proposed method has given better accuracy than Prewitt and Sobel methods. Retained surgical items (RSIs) pose significant risks to patients and healthcare professionals, prompting extensive efforts to reduce their incidence. RSIs are objects inadvertently left within patients' bodies after surgery, which can lead to severe consequences such as infections and death. The repercussions highlight the critical need to address this issue. Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) have displayed considerable potential for enhancing the prevention of RSIs through heightened precision and decreased reliance on human involvement. ML techniques are finding an expanding number of applications in medicine, ranging from automated imaging analysis to diagnosis. DL has enabled substantial advances in the prediction capabilities of computers by combining the availability of massive volumes of data with extremely effective learning algorithms. This paper reviews and evaluates recently published articles on the application of ML and DL in RSIs prevention and diagnosis, stressing the need for a multi-layered approach that leverages each method's strengths to mitigate RSI risks. It highlights the key findings, advantages, and limitations of the different techniques used. Extensive datasets for training ML and DL models could enhance RSI detection systems. This paper also discusses the various datasets used by researchers for training the models. In addition, future directions for improving these technologies for RSI diagnosis and prevention are considered. Recent research has documented the relationship between the promotion of 'ideal', 'fit' bodies in social media, body image and associated body concerns and conditions. This article expands this scholarship, focusing specifically on gender, body disaffection and social media. Thus far, body disaffection has mostly been understood through a psychological framing, as a pathology residing within an individual and strongly associated with poor body image because of internalizing media images. In this paper, drawing on feminist new materialism, I offer a framing of body disaffection as a relational phenomenon. The paper draws on a mixed method study in England, with over 1000 young people examining their experiences with a range of digital health technologies. I focus specifically on their engagement with social media, to explore the relationship between ideal images and body concerns. Far from being a simple process of internalization of negative perceptions or image one has of their body, disaffection is formed through the body via a complex process of entanglement with social media and other elements. I outline how disaffection materialises as part of an assemblage of elements, including discourses, humans, bodies, digital objects and platforms. The paper reveals how entanglements with social media can generate powerful affects such as shame, pleasure and belonging along gendered lines, which may have significant implications for young people's relationships with their bodies. I analyse how social media events focused on the 'transformation' of bodies generate powerful affects, which open or limit capacities for what 'boys' or 'girls' bodies might become in deeply gendered and sometimes harmful ways. Nevertheless, because of the distinct qualities of remote sensing, including expansive scenes and small, densely packed targets, there are many challenges in detecting remote sensing objects. Those challenges lead to insufficient accuracy in remote sensing object detection. Consequently, developing a new model is essential to enhance the identification capabilities for objects in remote sensing imagery. To solve these constraints, we have designed the OD-YOLO approach that uses multi-scale feature fusion to improve the performance of the YOLOv8n model in small target detection. Firstly, traditional convolutions have poor recognition capabilities for certain geometric shapes. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce the Detection Refinement Module (DRmodule) into the backbone architecture. This module utilizes Deformable Convolutional Networks and the Hybrid Attention Transformer to strengthen the model's capability for feature extraction from geometric shapes and blurred objects effectively. Meanwhile, based on the Feature Pyramid Network of YOLO, at the head of the model framework, this paper enhances the detection capability by introducing a Dynamic Head to strengthen the fusion of different scales features in the feature pyramid. Additionally, to address the issue of detecting small objects in remote sensing images, this paper specifically designs the OIoU loss function to finely describe the difference between the detection box and the true box, further enhancing model performance. Experiments on the VisDrone dataset show that OD-YOLO surpasses the compared models by at least 5.2% in mAP50 and 4.4% in mAP75, and experiments on the Foggy Cityscapes dataset demonstrated that OD-YOLO improved mAP by 6.5%, demonstrating outstanding results in tasks related to remote sensing images and adverse weather object detection. An edge-cloud computing collaborative dust concentration detection architecture is proposed for real-time operation of intelligent algorithms to reduce the warning delay. And, an end-to-end three-channel convolutional neural network (E2E-SCNN) method is proposed in the paper to facilitate intelligent monitoring and management of dust concentration in tobacco production workshops. This model, which includes three sub-networks-a local feature branch, a global feature branch, and a spatial feature branch, learns the detail texture, overall layout, and spatial distribution information of the input image respectively. A fusion of the three complementary features is performed at the end of the network for the final dust concentration regression prediction. The design, when compared with the single network structure that directly regresses the entire image, is shown to more fully represent the overall information of the image and enhance monitoring performance. A richly annotated image dataset of tobacco production workshops is constructed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The prediction error of E2E-SCNN is compared with existing image estimation algorithms, dual-channel networks, and other methods on this dataset using indicators such as Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and R 2 . It is shown by the results that excellent performance is achieved by the E2E-SCNN algorithm, significantly surpassing other comparison methods. The paper demonstrates that the accuracy and robustness of dust concentration prediction can be greatly improved by using a three-channel convolutional neural network spatial information monitoring framework. The process of image fusion is the process of enriching an image and improving the image's quality, so as to facilitate the subsequent image processing and analysis. With the increasing importance of image fusion technology, the fusion of infrared and visible images has received extensive attention. In today's deep learning environment, deep learning is widely used in the field of image fusion. However, in some applications, it is not possible to obtain a large amount of training data. Because some special organs of snakes can receive and process infrared information and visible information, the fusion method of infrared and visible light to simulate the visual mechanism of snakes came into being. Therefore, this paper takes into account the perspective of visual bionics to achieve image fusion; such methods do not need to obtain a significant amount of training data. However, most of the fusion methods for simulating snakes face the problem of unclear details, so this paper combines this method with a pulse coupled neural network (PCNN). By studying two receptive field models of retinal nerve cells, six dual-mode cell imaging mechanisms of rattlesnakes and their mathematical models and the PCNN model, an improved fusion method of infrared and visible images was proposed. For the proposed fusion method, eleven groups of source images were used, and three non-reference image quality evaluation indexes were compared with seven other fusion methods. This paper follows a detection-theoretic approach for using synthetic-aperture measurements, made at multiple moving passive receivers, in order to form an image showing the locations of stationary sources that are radiating unknown electromagnetic or acoustic waves. The paper starts with a physics-based model for the propagating fields, and, following the general approach of McWhorter et al (2023 arXiv:2302.06816, IEEE Open J. Signal Process. 4 437–51), derives a detection statistic that is used for the image formation. This detection statistic is a quadratic function of the data. Each point in the scene is tested as a possible hypothesized location for a source, and the detection statistic is plotted as a function of location. Because this image formation process is nonlinear, the standard linear methods for determining resolution cannot be applied. This paper shows how to analyze the detection image by first writing the noiseless image as a coherent sum of shifted complex ambiguity functions of the source waveform. The paper then develops a technique for calculating image resolution; resolution is found to depend on the sensor-source geometry and also on the properties (bandwidth and temporal duration) of the source waveform. Optimal filtering of the image is given, but a simple example suggests that optimal filtering may have little effect. Analysis is also given for the case in which multiple sources are present. This paper proposes a digital camouflage generation method based on an improved CycleGAN to produce camouflage patterns with a high degree of fusion with the background and realistic texture details. Firstly, a SE-ResNet network structure is constructed by combining the residual network ResNet with the channel attention mechanism SENet, enabling flexible adjustment of channel weights to effectively extract crucial channel features and enhance the network's perception capability of important information in images. Secondly, a color preservation loss is introduced to improve the adversarial loss function, thereby avoiding training instability and fluctuation in pattern quality. Experimental results demonstrate that the camouflage patterns generated using the proposed method achieve a Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) of 0.77 and a Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) of 18.9, representing improvements of 0.27 and 3.3, respectively, compared to the original CycleGAN. Structural planes decrease the strength and stability of rock masses, severely affecting their mechanical properties and deformation and failure characteristics. Therefore, investigation and analysis of structural planes are crucial tasks in mining rock mechanics. The drilling camera obtains image information of deep structural planes of rock masses through high-definition camera methods, providing important data sources for the analysis of deep structural planes of rock masses. This paper addresses the problems of high workload, low efficiency, high subjectivity, and poor accuracy brought about by manual processing based on current borehole image analysis and conducts an intelligent segmentation study of borehole image structural planes based on the U2-Net network. By collecting data from 20 different borehole images in different lithological regions, a dataset consisting of 1,013 borehole images with structural plane type, lithology, and color was established. Data augmentation methods such as image flipping, color jittering, blurring, and mixup were applied to expand the dataset to 12,421 images, meeting the requirements for deep network training data. Based on the PyTorch deep learning framework, the initial U2-Net network weights were set, the learning rate was set to 0.001, the training batch was 4, and the Adam optimizer adaptively adjusted the learning rate during the training process. A dedicated network model for segmenting structural planes was obtained, and the model achieved a maximum F-measure value of 0.749 when the confidence threshold was set to 0.7, with an accuracy rate of up to 0.85 within the range of recall rate greater than 0.5. Overall, the model has high accuracy for segmenting structural planes and very low mean absolute error, indicating good segmentation accuracy and certain generalization of the network. In this paper, we discuss the implementation of artificial self-awareness mechanisms and self-reflection abilities in deep neural networks. While the current limitations of research prevent achieving cognitive capabilities on par with natural biological entities, the incorporation of basic self-awareness and self-reflection mechanisms in deep learning architectures offers substantial advantages in tackling specific problems across various scientific fields, including geosciences. In the first section, we outline the foundational architecture of our deep learning approach termed Self-Aware Learning (SAL). The subsequent part of the paper highlights the practical benefits of this machine learning methodology through synthetic tests and applications addressed to automatic classification and image analysis of real petrological data sets. Diagnosing a disease requires observing the affected tissues and drawing conclusions based on specific known features. Conventionally, a pathologist would diagnose the sample manually by placing it on a glass slide and viewing it under the microscope. These microscopes existed 400 years ago, but over the years, there have been modifications aimed at digitizing every possible diagnostic test. One of the major advantages of digitizing the process is the reduced time consumption for acquiring, processing, and analyzing the slides. Another positive aspect is the reduction in subjectivity achieved by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to classify and diagnose specific diseases. This is achieved by attaching a digital camera to the microscope, which captures images of the glass slides for subsequent processing and diagnosis. There has been a lot of research in this field, but its implementation has been hindered by challenges such as interoperability and high-resolution data, resulting in large file sizes. Various applications for whole slide imaging, such as disease diagnosis techniques, whole slide imaging (WSI) scanners, digital slide scanners, the Internet of Things (IoT), and AI, have been explored in this study. Cables are vital load-bearing components of cable-stayed bridges. Surface defects can lead to internal corrosion and fracturing, significantly impacting the stability of the bridge structure. The detection of surface defects from bridge cable images faces numerous challenges, including shadow disturbances due to uneven lighting and difficulties in addressing multiscale defect features. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel and cost-effective deep learning segmentation network, named Trans-DCN, to detect defects in the surface of the bridge cable. The network leverages an efficient Transformer-based encoder and integrates multiscale features to overcome the limitations associated with local feature inadequacy. The decoder implements an atrous Deformable Convolution (DCN) pyramid and dynamically fuses low-level feature information to perceive the complex distribution of defects. The effectiveness of Trans-DCN is evaluated by comparing it with state-of-the-art segmentation baseline models using a dataset comprising cable bridge defect images. Experimental results demonstrate that our network outperforms the state-of-the-art network SegFormer, achieving a 27.1% reduction in GFLOPs, a 1.2% increase in mean Intersection over Union, and a 1.5% increase in the F1 score. Ablation experiments confirmed the effectiveness of each module within our network, further substantiating the significant validity and advantages of Trans-DCN in the task of bridge cable defect segmentation. Topological data analysis (TDA) is a method of feature extraction based on data topological structure. Image feature extraction using TDA has been shown to be superior to other feature extraction techniques in some problems, so it has recently received the attention of researchers. In this paper, clothing image retrieval based on topology features and color texture features is studied. The main work is as follows: (1) Based on the analysis of image data by persistent homology, the feature construction method of a topology feature histogram is proposed, which can represent the ruler of image local topological data, and make up for the shortcomings of traditional feature extraction methods. (2) The improvement of Wasserstein distance is presented, while the similarity measure method named topology feature histogram distance is proposed. (3) Because the single feature has some problems such as the incomplete description of image information and poor robustness, the clothing image retrieval is realized by combining the topology feature with the color texture feature. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm, namely topology feature histogram + corresponding distance, can effectively reduce the computation time while ensuring the accuracy. Compared with the method using only color texture, the retrieval rate of top5 is improved by 14.9%. The accurate distribution of joints on the tunnel face is crucial for assessing the stability and safety of surrounding rock during tunnel construction. This paper introduces the Mask R-CNN image segmentation algorithm, a state-of-the-art deep learning model, to achieve efficient and accurate identification and extraction of joints on tunnel face images. First, digital images of tunnel faces were captured and stitched, resulting in 286 complete images suitable for analysis. Then, the joints on the tunnel face were extracted using traditional image processing algorithms, the commonly used U-net image segmentation model, and the Mask R-CNN image segmentation model introduced in this paper to address the lack of recognition accuracy. Finally, the extraction results obtained by the three methods were compared. The comparison results show that the joint extraction method based on the Mask R-CNN image segmentation deep learning model introduced in this paper achieved the best joint extraction effect with a Dice similarity coefficient of 87.48%, outperforming traditional methods and the U-net model, which scored 60.59% and 75.36%, respectively, realizing accurate and efficient acquisition of tunnel face rock joints. Image classification is a critical task in the field of computer vision, and its importance has significantly increased over the past few years. Machine learning and deep learning techniques have demonstrated immense potential in this field. To overcome this limitation, researchers are turning to few-shot learning, which aims to classify images with limited training samples. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the field of image classification using few-shot learning. First, it investigates the use of data augmentation, transfer learning, and meta-learning methods in this field. The airlift pump is a key part of wastewater treatment and is employed as an innovative and feasible collection tool. However, as one of the key factors in the lifting capability of airlift pumps, film thickness in the gas–liquid two-phase flow operating in pumps is still an unknown topic because it is difficult to measure. This paper proposes a visualization method for measuring film thickness and investigates the film thickness when operating under gas flow with a high rate in airlift pumps using experiments. Firstly, a simulation experiment platform was built, and the images of the film structure were acquired by a high-speed camera. Then, image-processing technology and an image distortion correction were proposed to extract the gas–liquid interface for studying the thickness of the film. The experimental results demonstrated that a large film thickness ranging from 0.15 D to 0.24 D was found in airlift pumps and that its film thickness kept a constant value, even under a high gas superficial velocity, maintaining a large output liquid flow from airlift pumps. As wastewater was carried by wastewater treatment, a larger film thickness of the annular film will benefit the high lifting rate of wastewater. Over the past decade, AI has experienced exponential growth and proven its effectiveness in processing massive datasets and optimizing decision-making. The main content of this review paper emphasizes the active utilization of AI in the field of stem cells. Stem cell therapies use diverse stem cells for drug development, disease modeling, and medical treatment research. However, cultivating and differentiating stem cells, along with demonstrating cell efficacy, require significant time and labor. In this review paper, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are widely used to overcome these limitations by analyzing stem cell images, predicting cell types and differentiation efficiency, and enhancing therapeutic outcomes. In the biomedical sciences field, AI algorithms are used to automatically screen large compound databases, identify potential molecular structures and characteristics, and evaluate the efficacy and safety of candidate drugs for specific diseases. Also, AI aids in predicting disease occurrence by analyzing patients' genetic data, medical images, and physiological signals, facilitating early diagnosis. To address the issue of the lack of specialized data filtering algorithms for dataset production, we proposed an image filtering algorithm. Using feature fusion methods to improve discrete wavelet transform algorithm (DWT) and enhance the robustness of image feature extraction, a weighted hash algorithm was proposed to hash features to reduce the complexity and computational cost of feature comparison. To minimize the time cost of image filtering as much as possible, a fast distance calculation method was also proposed to calculate the similarity of images. The experimental results showed that compared with other advanced methods, the algorithm proposed in this paper had an average accuracy improvement of 3% and a speed improvement of at least 30%. Compared with traditional manual filtering methods, while ensuring accuracy, the filtering speed of a single image is increased from 9.9s to 0.01s, which has important application value for dataset production. Due to the advantages of coastal areas in the fields of agriculture, transport, and fishing, increasingly more people are moving to these areas. Sea level information is important for these people to survive after extreme sea level events. With the recent improvements in computing and storage capacities, image analysis as a new measuring method is being rapidly developed and widely applied. In this paper, a multi-camera-based sea level height measuring system was built along Japan's coast and a deep-learning-based stereo matching method has been proposed for this system to complete 3D measurements. In this system, cameras are set with long base distances to ensure the long-distance monitoring system's precision, which causes a huge difference between the fields of view of the left and right cameras. Since most common network structures complete stereo matching by depth-wise cross-correlation between left and right images, they rely too much on the high-quality rectification of two images and fail on our long-distance sea surface images. We established a feature detection and matching network to realize sea wave extraction and sparse stereo matching for the system. Based on our previous result using the traditional method, the initial disparity was computed to reduce the search range of stereo matching. A training set with 785 pairs of sea surface images and 10,172 pairs of well-matched sea wave images was constructed to supervise the network. The experimental results verified that the proposed method can realize sea wave extraction and mask generation. Technological advances in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) pursued by artificial intelligence (AI) are improving remote sensing applications in smart agriculture. These are valuable tools for monitoring and disease identification of plants as they can collect data with no damage and effects on plants. However, their limited carrying and battery capacities restrict their performance in larger areas. Therefore, using multiple UAVs, especially in the form of a swarm is more significant for monitoring larger areas such as crop fields and forests. The diversity of research studies necessitates a literature review for more progress and contribution in the agricultural field. In this review, the comparative analysis of existing literature surveys is explored. This paper aims to provide an overview of AIbased UAV swarms, different cameras and sensors, image processing, and machine learning (ML) algorithms for image analysis having the purpose of monitoring and disease identification. Brassica plants are focused as they are grown on wider scales globally. Brassica species, the commonly infected diseases, and different types of disease detectionmethods are discussed. Investigations show the significance of using UAV swarms for growthmonitoring growth for yield estimation, health monitoring, water status monitoring and irrigation management, nutrition disorders monitoring, pest and disease detection, and pesticide and fertilizer spraying in Brassica plants. Finally, some challenges of swarm-based applications are also addressed that require future consideration. With the increase in the amount of images online, the whole Internet is becoming an image database. Since there are so many available images, it is difficult for users to find the desired images. Unlike text search engines, image search engines cannot fully recognize the visual meaning of an image. In addition, it is difficult to obtain the desired images from the keywords provided by the user, since a keyword may contain multiple meanings. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a psychological intention diagram of past users, if inquiring using a keyword, to predict the images that these users want. Based upon the novel psychological diagram, this paper proposes a search engine that analyzes images in the sequential probing of the current user if he/she inquires after the same keywords as previous users. Moreover, this paper also constructs a psychological intention diagram of the designers of the web pages containing the keyword. This type of psychological intention diagram is used when a query is not issued by past users. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first one considering the psychological viewpoint of users and web designers in guiding the retrieval of the search engine. Plastic pollution in the ocean is a severe environmental problem worldwide because rivers carry plastic waste from human activities, harming the ocean's health, ecosystems, and people. Therefore, monitoring the amount of plastic waste flowing from rivers and streams worldwide is crucial. In response to this issue of river-floating waste, our present research aimed to develop an automated waste measurement method tailored for real rivers. To achieve this, we considered three scenarios: clear visibility, partially submerged waste, and collective mass. We proposed the use of object detection and tracking techniques based on deep learning architectures, specifically the You Only Look Once (YOLOv5) and Simple Online and Realtime Tracking with a Deep Association Metric (DeepSORT). The types of waste classified in this research included cans, cartons, plastic bottles, foams, glasses, papers, and plastics in laboratory flume experiments. Our results demonstrated that the refined YOLOv5, when applied to river-floating waste images, achieved high classification accuracy, with 88% or more for the mean average precision. The floating waste tracking using DeepSORT also attained F1 scores high enough for accurate waste counting. Furthermore, we evaluated the proposed method across the three different scenarios, each achieving an 80% accuracy rate, suggesting its potential applicability in real river environments. These results strongly support the effectiveness of our proposed method, leveraging the two deep learning architectures for detecting and tracking river-floating waste with high accuracy.
