The introduction to this theme issue discusses a series of papers examining the increasing marketisation of social reproduction and its effects on systems that sustain human and social life. This is done by examining the frontiers, framings, and frictions that arise when market systems are constructed to enable capital accumulation in the realm of social reproduction. Frontiers identify the expansion of market logic into new areas, framings explore how financial actors attempt to bring the logic of social reproduction within the purview of market competition, and frictions highlight the various tensions that generate resistance to the roll out of market logics. Through establishing these three areas, we argue that both market structures and systems of social reproduction should be understood as geographically variegated and, at times, uncertain. This variegation necessitates an understanding of marketised social reproduction as forged through complex articulations of market and non-market logics. Using cases from surrogacy to smart electricity meters, the papers in this theme issue illustrate that while these articulations may generate benefits for some individuals, households and communities, such processes of marketisation can introduce new layers of inequity and undermine the ethical relations and social commitments that sustain life—in the service of enabling accumulation. This study examines the quantitative conditions under which an energy metering pricing model is proposed to increase both gas merchant profits and gas customer consumer surplus compared to a volumetric pricing model. The quantitative condition is found to be related to factors such as the standard unit calorific value of natural gas prescribed by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and other relevant government departments under the energy metering pricing model. This paper establishes a mathematical model based on optimization theory to explore the operational decisions of city gas suppliers in the volumetric and energy metering and pricing modes, respectively, under the condition of relatively stable natural gas sales price. The results of the study show that DAC and other authorities can regulate the standard unit calorific value of natural gas under the energy metering and pricing model by regulating the standard unit calorific value of natural gas. This affects the incentives of gas dealers to produce and operate, guides the preference of gas users for natural gas energy metering and pricing, and results in the derivation of formulas for a reasonable range of standard unit calorific values for natural gas. The findings of this paper provide theoretical support to promote the reform of natural gas energy measurement and pricing, and contribute to the development of the natural gas industry. Energy efficiency is an important issue in industry, especially with the ever-increasing consumption of electrical energy. The power quality and the traceability of metering devices are essential when integrating energy metering systems for energy efficiency. This management requires an understanding of electrical current events such as pulse and transient currents. Current transducers are widely used to measure these electrical current events up to a few megahertz. Their use makes it possible to measure not only the main current flowing through the transducer, but also the bypass current that affects electrical equipment. Calibration of these sensors up to a few megahertz then becomes an essential step. Currently, most calibration methods are limited to 100 kHz frequency for a current of 10 A. This paper presents an improvement of a traceable calibration methodology for current transducers up to 10 A and 1 MHz, thus increasing, by 10 times, the current level for such high frequency applications. This calibration methodology is based on a metrological traceability chain (uninterrupted link to the International System of Units) with respect to a calculable current shunt and is currently the only traceable method for calibrating current transducers at 10 A and up to 1 MHz. The uncertainty obtained for the transimpedance ratio is less than 0.2%, which is considerably reduced with respect to the existing capabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the European Union, increasing attention is already being paid not only to the development of renewable energy sources, but also to the establishment of solutions to achieve local energy self-sufficiency while increasing the role of citizens in managing the energy they generate. This approach is expected both to have a positive impact on the environment and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and to enhance energy security—both in economic and civic terms by, i.a., combating energy poverty. The development of local energy communities promoted in the EU is supported i.a. by energy cooperatives. These contribute to the efficient harnessing of renewable energy potential in rural and urban-rural areas, and have been developing in Poland for several years now. In their previous studies, the authors of this research paper attempted to verify the generation (number, type and capacity of installed sources) and consumption (energy demand) configurations in which an energy cooperative would be a viable solution for prosumers who might establish it. However, over the past few years, the conditions for prosumers and the method of their accounting with the electricity seller have changed radically in Poland (shift from net metering to net billing). This situation has opened up space for further research and encouraged the authors to revisit the problem of analyzing the viability of establishing energy cooperatives in relation to the rules of operation of individual prosumers. This research was carried out for three scenarios, and the horizon of the analyses conducted and described extends to 2045. The comparative analysis included energy consumers without their own generation sources, prosumers with a photovoltaic generation installation covered by the net billing model, as well as a scenario involving prosumers' cooperation within an energy cooperative, which by law is settled in the net metering model. Conclusions from the research and simulations made it possible to confirm the claim that, despite changes in the rules of prosumer billing, developing energy independence in the energy community formula results in a significant reduction in the cost of purchasing electricity (even several times lower purchase costs in the timeframe analyzed) and can lead to a reduction in the payback time of investments in generation sources even by a factor of two. The results presented in this research paper open up space for further research. The outcomes allow us to assume that energy cooperatives—in the organizational and institutional model in Poland—are a good tool for reducing the phenomenon of energy poverty on a local scale. This paper presents the development, design, and implementation of a SCADA monitoring power meter system for RF and IoT networks. The system collects, measures, stores, and visualizes energy data such as voltage, current, power, energy, reactive power, reactive energy, and power factor, as well as appropriate process data in two remote industrial plants. The first energy measuring point is the MASTER station and it is in the first plant, while the second energy measuring point is the SLAVE station and it is in the second plant. The SCADA monitoring system is built into the MASTER station, and the SLAVE station is connected to it by an RF radio frequency connection. Both stations contain microcomputers, energy measurement units, and appropriate RF modules. The microcomputer in the MASTER station is serially connected to the IoT microcomputer for the transfer of measurement data in the Internet network. Featured Application: Improving the measurement of electricity consumption by reducing errors is the main objective of this article. As a concrete application, the presented algorithm is used for the determination of electricity meters by the end user. With minimal costs, a correct assessment of energy consumption can be made, and therefore the calculated electricity costs should be accurate. Although data acquisition is a very usual technique, several aspects are not always considered, such as the synchronization of the acquired measures and the evaluation of the resulting errors. This paper aims to highlight this fact by the mathematical determination of the necessary correction and the implementation of software meant to evaluate the performances of acquisition systems. As an example, a three-phased acquisition system was developed in order to monitor the currents and voltages on the three phases. Also, other measures were performed, such as of power and phase. The components on each phase did not have to be fully identified because a whole system calibration could be performed in the first stage. The calibration consisted in finding the weighting coefficients for each measured quantity. The implemented solution for three-phased measure acquisition started from the hypothesis of a sampling frequency that respected the Shannon theorem. The distance between two samples was small enough to consider a linear evolution between two moments for the same measure. Errors that affected the above-mentioned measures, due to the fact that the samples were examined in different moments, were analyzed and brought to the minimum value. With the rapid development of the information age, smart meters play an important role in the smart grid. However, there are more and more attacks on smart meters, which mainly focus on the identity authentication of smart meters and the security protection of electricity consumption data. In this paper, an efficient lightweight smart meter authentication scheme is proposed based on the Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT), which can realize the revocation of a single smart meter user by publishing a secret random value bound to the smart meter identity. The proposed scheme not only protects the security of smart meter electricity consumption data by using encryption, but also resists identity attacks from both internal and external adversaries by using hash functions and timestamps. Experiment shows that the proposed scheme has lower computation overhead and communication overhead than other authentication schemes and is more suitable for smart meter authentication. Faced with the pressure of energy conservation and emission reduction, the power industry is urgently requires low-carbon transformation. The carbon flow calculation theory redistributes the actual carbon generated by the power plant to the branch and loads customers with the power flow. This paper first introduces the theory of carbon flow calculation and the carbon metrics corresponding to the electricity metrics. Second, a time-synchronous technology is introduced for the carbon flow calculation of transmission, transformation, and distribution networks, and a time-synchronous-based carbon metering system is conceived. The impact of time deviation on carbon metering is elucidated through simulation experiments of IEEE14 standard nodes, and finally, relevant suggestions are made for future research ideas and technical routes. A monitoring system is needed to determine the performance of an off-grid solar power plant. This paper presents a monitoring system design for an off-grid solar power plant with a capacity of 4 kWp. This off-grid solar power plant system was built on campus 2 of Institut Teknologi Nasional Malang. The purpose of a monitoring system is to collect and present information systematically about the state of the off-grid solar power plant system. This information can be accessed anywhere and anytime by users. Hardware used includes SPM91 to read energy meters digitally, PZEM-017 as a Modbus-based measuring instrument, and communication devices to send data to a database server. The monitoring system dashboard was built using Haiwell SCADA software. The result was a monitoring system that can display parameter data, data loggers, and graphs of the condition of the off-grid solar power plant. The PZEM-017 has an accuracy rate of 99.48% for voltage readings and 98.76% for current readings. Metrological characterisation of static energy meters under realistic low power quality conditions is a basic requirement for proper grid control and fair energy billing. The paper reports about a new proposed methodology, where the meters are tested under conditions directly recorded at installation sites. The waveforms of voltages and currents are sampled using a portable instrument; they are reproduced in laboratory conditions with a phantom power generator, with a bandwidth covering up to the 40th harmonic. The recording site is a photovoltaic energy production facility, having a a nominal power of 50 kW, at the coupling section to the grid. These waveforms were then reproduced in the laboratory, and tested on different models of single- and three-phase commercial static energy meters; the models chosen represent both energy meters used by energy providers at the point of common-coupling, and also meters typically used for in-line monitoring by end users. The quantity of interest is the reading error of the measured energy, when tested with the conditions reproduced from the on-field measurements, in comparison with a reference meter. All tested energy meter models comply with the present international documentary standards, which require tests under low power quality conditions; nevertheless, there are models that show unacceptable errors (up to 25%) in the measurement of active energy when tested with the on-field recorded waveforms. This paper deals with an energy metering system for electricity monitoring for each and every household that is different from the conventional energy meter. This proposed design is meant to be a better alternative for an efficient and more secure line for energy usage by the consumer without any illegal access to their connections so that they don't have to pay for something they aren't accountable for in the first place and protect the supplier/provider, which is the government, from incurring any losses from the theft as well as from customers who tamper with the meter values. These things are vital in today's world. So, we are taking this into account and designing a smart meter with the IoT technology for monitoring data values at the tip of our fingers, readily available at any moment. It serves many purposes, from the monitoring of energy consumption to easily using mobile phones to work on managing the energy usage according to their budget. It is also easy for the supplier to monitor without manually inspecting the location. The WiFi module ESP8266 is used for the purpose of transmitting the energy data to the server. This paper also deals with a smart grid system in which energy meters are used as a two-way communication system as opposed to conventional meters with one-way communication, which will be a more efficient system. This IoT is good in terms of its development towards an easy and advanced metering infrastructure, which also needs secure communication between the supplier and consumer to protect that data. The measuring accuracy of the electric energy meter, voltage transformer and current transformer shows a dynamic state under the influence of its factors and external factors. The error of the voltage transformer and current transformer cannot be measured by traditional method. This paper establishes a multidimensional error analysis and fault diagnosis system for power metering based on Hadoop architecture and Spark memory calculation. The platform extracted the error signal from the measurement data and calculated the characteristic value of the error signal. Then, dependent cloud and dynamic time rules are used to estimate the transformer's and voltage transformer's continuity. Then, a half-step membership degree cloud generation algorithm is constructed to overcome the error bias randomness and fuzzy characteristics under the influence factors. Finally, the system uses the dynamic correction method to estimate the similarity of error timing and quantitative factors to realize the error calculation of the current transformer and voltage transformer. The power metering error processing system was built with the support of Hadoop and Spark. The timing increment is introduced in the process of data collection. Dependent cloud and dynamic time-repair methods can improve the accuracy of diagnosing errors in electric energy metering. The metering mode is gradually changing from volumetric metering to energy metering under the open-access operation of gas pipelines. The gas component tracking by operating simulation is an effective method to realize the energy metering of gas networks. In this paper, coupling and decoupling transient component tracking models of gas networks are proposed. The pipeline governing equations, compressor equations, valve equations, and node relationship equations are considered in the proposed models. The implicit central difference method and the damped Newtonian method are adopted to solve the models. The coupling model considers the component tracking part and hydraulic-thermal simulation as a whole, while the decoupling model splits the whole process into the gas component tracking part, the parameters calculation part, and the hydraulic-thermal simulation part. In the component tracking part, the spatiotemporal variation of the gas mass fraction and density can be obtained through the input velocity of each node. Then, the parameters in the gas state equation can be solved, the hydraulic-thermal simulation can be performed, and the new velocity of each node can be calculated. The iteration for each time step ends if the deviation of flow velocity in the component tracking process and the hydraulic-thermal process satisfies the requirements. Two cases are studied to verify the effectiveness of the proposed models, and the boundary condition adaptability of the transient simulation models is analyzed. The proposed models can efficiently simulate the spatiotemporal variation of the operating variables and gas components, providing a reference in the operation of natural gas pipeline networks. Estimating line impedance is relevant in transmission and distribution networks, in particular for planning and control. The large number of deployed PMUs has fostered the use of passive indirect methods based on network model identification. Electrified railways are a particular example of a distribution network, with moving highly dynamic loads, that would benefit from line impedance information for energy efficiency and optimization purposes, but for which many of the methods used in industrial applications cannot be directly applied. The estimate is carried out onboard using a passive method in a single-point perspective, suitable for implementation with energy metering onboard equipment. A comparison of two methods is carried out based on the non-linear least mean squares (LMS) optimization of an over-determined system of equations and on the auto- and cross-spectra of the pantograph voltage and current. The methods are checked preliminarily with a simulated synthetic network, showing good accuracy, within 5%. They are then applied to measured data over a 20 min run over the Swiss  16.7  Hz railway network. Both methods are suitable to track network impedance in real time during the train journey; but with suitable checks on the significance of the pantograph current and on the values of the coefficient of determination, the LMS method seems more reliable with predictable behavior. Given the rapid advancement in the natural gas market, the existing volume-based trading system falls short of accurately valuing this commodity. This study focuses on addressing the economic challenges in pipeline operations resulting from transitioning from volume to energy metering for natural gas. Based on the actual situation of China's natural gas market, a model is established for optimizing the operation of a multigas source pipe network under the energy metering system and volume metering system by considering the implementation plan of the energy metering system and the demand for natural gas from special users, and taking maximizing the profit of pipe operation as the goal, and taking the volume of gas supplied by the gas source and the way of boosting the pressure of the whole pipe as the decision-making variables. The model was applied to a long-distance pipe in China and solved by the GAMS/ANTIGONE solver. The results showed that the optimization results under different energy metering system implementation schemes were better than the actual operation schemes in the field, with a maximum profit increase of about 17.42%. User demand sensitivity analysis reveals that the highest profit difference under various user demand scenarios can reach 9%, and the profit variance under different gas source quality combinations can reach up to 10.56%. The major component of the smart grid (SG) is the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), which monitors and controls the existing power system and provides interactive services for invoicing and electricity usage management with the utility. Including a cyber-layer in the metering system allows two-way communication but creates a new opportunity for energy theft, resulting in significant monetary loss. This article proposes an approach to detecting abnormal consumption patterns using energy metering data based on the ensemble technique AdaBoost, a boosting algorithm. Different statistical and descriptive features are retrieved from metering data samples, which account for extreme conditions. The model is trained for malicious and non-malicious data for five different attack scenarios, which are analyzed on the Irish Social Science Data Archive (ISSDA) smart meter dataset. In contrast to prior supervised techniques, it works well even with unbalanced data. The efficacy of the proposed theft detection method has been evaluated by comparing the accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score with the other well-known approaches in the literature. The continuous improvement of the energy and sustainability performances of buildings is stimulated by mandatory rules, economic incentives and voluntary sustainability pathway of which energy efficiency is one of the most important components. The tools to evaluate the energy, sustainability, automation and energy metering performances of buildings, to check the status and lead the investments, are often complex, slow, expensive and related to the specific Countries, making difficult the job for the facility management departments of national or international organizations in EU. The present paper wants to give a contribute to existing literature by providing a new energy, sustainability, automation and energy metering label system to quickly, simply and economically evaluate the performances of office buildings in Europe. This tool has been tested on a case study, a research center of the European Space Agency (ESA-ESRIN) in Rome, Italy. The results of the test show that the tool has been successfully applied on the buildings of the research center using the data provided by the facility management department of ESA-ESRIN and the energy audit of the center. The labels can correctly represent the state of the buildings in a more cost-effective way if compared to the national energy certification and to international sustainability protocols. This study provides the facility management departments of public and private companies in EU - especially if they manage buildings in different EU nations - a reliable tool to quicky evaluate the energy, sustainability, automation and energy metering performances of their buildings. The operating environment greatly influences the accuracy of power metering devices, resulting in variations and inconsistencies in measurement results across different working situations. A calibration model for power metering devices is proposed in this study, considering a range of environmental circumstances. The first step involves investigating the environmental conditions that impact the accuracy of power metering devices. The mutual information approach is utilized to identify environmental disturbances affecting device accuracy. A machine learning-driven symmetry attention Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network addresses measurement errors, capitalizing on the network's symmetry data knowledge. Ultimately, the efficacy of the suggested approach is substantiated through the utilization of performance indicators, namely, Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Error (MAE). The results show that the proposed method can effectively reduce the errors of the power measurement device in all quarters, and the error reduction effect is over 10% in the spring, which is better than other models, demonstrating exemplary performance in correcting the calibration errors of the power measurement device. We face a decentralized renewable energy production scenario, where a large number of small energy producers, i.e., prosumers, contribute to a common distributor entity, who resells energy directly to end-users. A major challenge for the distributor is to ensure power stability, constantly balancing produced vs consumed energy flows. In this context, being able to provide quick restore actions in response to unpredictable unbalancing events is a must, as fluctuations are the norm for renewable energy sources. To this aim, the high scalability and diversity of sources are crucial requirements for the said balancing to be actually manageable. In this study, we explored the challenges and benefits of adopting a blockchain-based software architecture as a scalable, trustless interaction platform between prosumers' smart energy meters and the distributor. Our developed prototype accomplishes the energy load balancing service via smart contracts deployed in a real blockchain network with an increasing number of simulated prosumers. The article is concerned with the operation of electric power quality meters and analyzers when incorrectly installed on a three-phase electrical network. An analytical study of the meter's errors under the conditions of faulty installation was carried out. All possible types of installation errors are considered according to the proposed classification, as well as possible combinations of a pair of installation faults simultaneously. Classification of installation faults is also proposed. Matrix expressions are derived that allow modeling of any type of installation faults to quantify power and symmetry measurement errors. The proposed method allows to obtain quantitative signs that can identify a specific installation fault. The results of this study can help the development of an algorithm for the automatic detection of installation faults and their correction. The analytical results were confirmed by simulation studies on a three-phase network model in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. In the electrical installations of buildings, there is an increasing number of non-linear energy receivers, which introduce strong distortions of the load current of electronic energy meters. Since the readings of these meters are the basis for financial settlements of electricity consumers, it is very important to determine how much the distortion of the receiver current affects the correct operation of commonly used electronic energy meters. This paper presents the design and implementation of a low-cost system oriented to the synchronised and real-time surveillance and monitoring of electrical parameters of different computer devices. To measure energy consumption in a computer system, it is proposed to use, instead of a general-purpose wattmeter, one designed ad-hoc and synchronously collects the energy consumption of its various nodes or devices. The implementation of the devised system is based on the confluence of several technologies or tools widely used in the Internet of Things. Thus, this article the intelligent objects are the power meters, whose connections are based on the low-cost ESP32 microcontroller. The message transmission between devices is carried out with the standard message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol, the measurements are grouped in a database on an InfluxDB server that store the sensor data as time series, and Grafana is used as a graphical user interface. The efficiency of the proposed energy monitoring system is demonstrated by the experimental results of a real application that successfully and synchronously records the voltage, current, active power and cumulative energy consumption of a distributed cluster that includes a total of 60 cores. The IoT-based Smart Energy Meter, powered by the ESP32-C3 microcontroller, is an innovative solution for monitoring and controlling electricity consumption for both residential and commercial utilization. Smart meters are devices that provide detailed information about the energy consumed by specific electricity supply points, such as homes, offices, and businesses. Data from smart meters are useful for modeling energy systems, predicting electricity consumption, and understanding human behavior. We present the first smart meter dataset from Spanish electricity supply points, expanding the geographic diversity of available data on energy consumption at the household level and reducing biases in existing data, which typically come from a limited number of countries. The dataset consists of 25,559 raw hourly time series with an average length of nearly three years, spanning from November 2014 to June 2022. It also includes three subsets obtained by segmenting and cleaning the raw time series data, each focusing on the periods before, during, and after the COVID-19 lockdowns in Spain. This dataset is a valuable resource for studying electricity consumption patterns and behaviors that emerge in response to different natural experiments, such as nationwide and regional lockdowns, nighttime curfews, and changes in electricity pricing. Internet of Things (IoT) is the amalgamation of hardware, like sensors and trackers, which monitor several parameters of the environment or physical objects, and software that processes all the data gathered by hardware. Globally, the IoT market is anticipated to reach 53.8 billion USD by 2025. This enhancing demand is due to its innate ability to automate, which drives several industries to adopt IoT. In addition, minimum memory cost, processing, and storage with an increase in Big Data (BD), cloud, and conjunction of industrial networks and the internet are the added factors for the increase in IoT development. Due to this significance, IoT has applications in numerous areas like medical management, farming, wearable technology, smart energy meters, smart cities, etc. The applications are not limited to the examples mentioned above. Considering this, existing studies have considered different applications and attempted to execute them. As different applications have been focused on by these studies, the present review intends to provide a compilation of potential applications of IoT as considered by conventional research between 2018 and 2022.
