The aging of the population is associated with an increase in the prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia. Our research aim was to determine how technology can help to improve the support for behavioral and psychological challenges of dementia. A systematic review of the literature was performed following PRISMA guidelines. Papers meeting the inclusion criteria and reporting technological devices aimed to the management of these challenges. After screening 1085 papers, 18 studies were eligible for inclusion in the review. Technologies identified in this search (e.g., robots, mobile, apps, computer, software, GPS, wearables, assistive technology) suggest that this non-pharmacological approach may be useful in projects aimed to the management and control of behavioral and psychological manifestations in people living with Alzheimer. The manifestations that are most successfully supported by means of technological applications and devices are depression, sleep disorders, anxiety, apathy, motor activity, and agitation. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, a pediatric hospice in Ottawa, Ontario, implemented a Virtual Bereavement Group Program, necessitating a reorganization of care delivery during the global crisis. This paper outlines the program and assesses the feedback of families who participated in the program following the death of a child or grandchild. Participants expressed high levels of satisfaction, indicating its potential as an effective approach for pediatric bereavement care beyond the pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As policymakers globally recognize aging in place as the preferred option for most adults, there is a growing need to supplement family or informal caregiving for frail older adults with formal homecare services, particularly for those who require 24/7 care due to significant physical and/or cognitive impairment. The core objective of this qualitative study was to explore family members' experiences in employing live-in care workers, particularly the nature of their engagement and the quality of their relationships with these care workers. Our analysis of semi-structured interviews with 35 family caregivers revealed four themes: 1) challenges in acquiring support and developing dependency; 2) negotiation of roles, responsibilities, and moral dilemmas; 3) shifting emotions between trust and suspicion; and 4) role confusion, expectations, and disappointments. The study suggests that families might benefit from formal guidance regarding fostering and maintaining positive relationships in the homecare environment. Alcohol Use Disorder is a complex and broad condition with multiple pathways to resolution. Only a small proportion of people with AUD seek formal treatment or support, whilst lower severity AUD is particularly under-addressed. In part, this reflects common misconceptions about AUD as an always severe condition requiring lifelong abstinence. The present study sought to investigate the impact of an online programme focused on supporting participants (n = 928) looking to change their drinking behaviors on outcomes of self-reported happiness with drinking and other well-being outcomes. Results showed that post-intervention, all participants reported significantly increased happiness with their drinking, greater drink-refusal self-efficacy, and improvements in how drinking impacted multiple well-being domains such as sleep and emotions. Importantly, it was found that all participants were happier with their drinking regardless of whether their goal was to abstain from drinking or to reduce their drinking. These results add to evidence highlighting the need to broaden the accessibility and range of options available to support a wider range of people with AUD, particularly via increasing understanding and acceptance of non-abstinent routes to AUD resolution. Increasing scholarly attention has been paid to the reproductive injustices experienced by Indigenous women. However, the breastfeeding experiences of Indigenous women have infrequently been explored. This study uses a qualitative description research approach to explore the breastfeeding experiences of Indigenous women members of a non-federally recognized tribe in the Gulf South. Key themes included: 1) Shifting generational practices; 2) Lack of institutional resources; 3) Inadequate support from healthcare providers; and 4) Institutional and community supports for breastfeeding. These findings highlight the need for increased institutional and community support, and breastfeeding education, so that Indigenous women can reach their breastfeeding goals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hospital-based chaplains provide crucial spiritual and emotional care to patients, families, and staff during times of intense life changes and crises. Chaplains are regularly exposed to suffering and their work may result in personal mental and emotional health challenges. To understand chaplains' perceptions of the impact of their work and methods to cope, a secondary analysis of a mixed-methods study on chaplain well-being was undertaken. Qualitative interviews were conducted with nine hospital-based chaplains and data were coded and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results revealed that participants perceive their work as offering both trials and rewards, and their efforts to cope with trials include interpersonal support, intrapersonal resources, and spiritual resilience. Personal insights into chaplains' experiences may help inform organizational interventions to support these essential members of the care team. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

How does the American public understand the term chaplain? What fraction interact with chaplains and in what settings? What is the content of those interactions and do care recipients find them valuable? We answer these questions with data from a nationally representative survey (N = 1096) conducted in March 2022 and interviews with a subset (N = 50) of survey recipients who interacted with chaplains. We find that people in the United States do not have a consistent understanding of the term chaplain. Based on our definition, at least 18% of Americans have interacted with a chaplain. Among those who interacted with a chaplain as defined in the survey, the majority did so through healthcare organizations. Care recipients include people who were ill and their visitors/caregivers. The most common types of support received were prayer, listening and comfort. Overall, survey respondents found chaplains to be moderately or very valuable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports empirical outcomes of an ongoing transdisciplinary participatory community action research project that implements behavioral activation in homeless shelters. The overall goal of this Project is twofold: (1) to improve psychosocial functioning of shelter residents and enhance their opportunities to overcome homelessness; and (2) to enhance civic development of service-learning students who assist in Project implementation. Two studies are reported, representing these goals. Study 1 found that residents of a men's shelter (n = 892), women's shelter (n = 433), and transitional housing (n = 40) perceived behavioral activation sessions as immediately beneficial (i.e., important, meaningful, worthy of repeating, and enjoyable), and over the course of shelter stay, they perceived behavioral activation as contributing to their hope, empowerment/self-sufficiency, quality of life, purpose/meaning in life, wellbeing, social support, shelter social climate, and relationships with staff. Quantitative findings are supported by qualitative data (comments by residents on forms). Study 2, which replicates and extends past research on civic-development in service-learning students, used a new quasi-experimental design to compare service-learning students (n = 41) in an interdisciplinary course on homelessness versus non-service-learning students (n = 16) in a psychology course. Service-learning students showed pre- to post-semester improvements in community service self-efficacy, decreases in stigmatizing attitudes, and increases in awareness of privilege and oppression, but students not engaged in service-learning did not show these civic-related changes. These quantitative results are supported by qualitative data (written reflections by students). Results and implications are discussed within the context of the concept of psychopolitical validity.
