In recent times, elevated urban linkages (EULs) have emerged as crucial components of urban development, cutting through the cities' urban fabric to accommodate the rapid expansion of urban cores and to facilitate traffic flow. However, these massive infrastructures have inadvertently given rise to urban lost spaces—vacant, inefficient areas within the urban fabric. Recognizing these lost spaces as untapped public assets, the paper explores sustainable development strategies to reclaim them into the urban fabric, transforming them into vibrant, multi-functional public spaces. The paper aims to achieve a set of urban design guidelines for rehabilitation design interventions which will be deduced into a comprehensive framework. This framework encompasses criteria for selecting appropriate approaches and types of rehabilitation design interventions, as well as design principles ensuring the desirability of the reclaimed space. The paper applies this framework to assess the El Sawy Cultural Wheel in Egypt, revealing it as a successful example of a reclaimed space. While positive aspects of rehabilitation design interventions are evident in terms of the approach and type of intervention in this case study, there are identified areas with shortcomings in fully implementing the design principles, if enhanced, could elevate the overall quality of the reclaimed space. In the process of global urban development, there are urgent ecological security and environmental pollution problems, green development is the fundamental way for urban sustainable development, economic transformation and mitigation of ecological and environmental problems. Based on the panel data of 283 cities at prefecture level and above in China from 2003 to 2017, this paper analyzes spatial–temporal evolution characteristics of urban green development efficiency (UGDE) and the peer effects of UGDE between cities of different grades. It is found that during the study period, in terms of temporal evolution, the average UGDE in China increased from 0.47 in 2003 to 0.61 in 2017, with a cumulative growth rate of 29.79%, showing a rising trend in general. In terms of spatial evolution, the number of low-efficiency cities and medium-efficiency cities continued to decrease. The eastern region has always been the main distribution area of higher-efficiency cities and high-efficiency cities; in the central region, UGDE in most cities improved significantly; in the western region, UGDE has always lagged behind that in the eastern and central regions. In addition, the center of gravity of UGDE presented a trend of northwest migration in general, with a total displacement of 100.07 km, and UGDE showed a spatial dispersion trend. The empirical results indicate that the improvement of UGDE in large cities has a driving effect on that in neighboring medium cities and small cities through the positive peer effect, and the growth of UGDE in medium cities has a promoting effect on that in neighboring small cities through the positive peer effect; the increase of UGDE in medium cities has a positive peer effect on that in neighboring large cities, and the growth of UGDE in small cities has a positive peer effect on that in neighboring medium cities; UGDE promotes each other between large cities through the positive peer effect. This paper examines poverty and inequality in Pakistan's mountains, using nationally representative data. Our analysis reveals that, despite a slight decline in poverty rates, overall rates remain alarmingly high, with significant variations across provinces and regions. Rural and mountain areas exhibit higher poverty rates (31% in rural areas, 13% in urban areas in 2015/16) compared to urban centers. The national incidence of multidimensional poverty in 2014/15 was 41%, surpassing monetary poverty rates. Notably, rural areas (47%) experienced significantly higher multidimensional poverty than urban centers (12%), with Balochistan's mountainous province recording the highest rates (63%). The four provinces display significant heterogeneity in multidimensional poverty, with district-level variations ranging from 10 to 90% in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The majority of districts with high poverty incidence are situated in mountainous regions, where people face multidimensional challenges in accessing basic facilities such as health and education, cooking fuel, and housing. To address this issue, Pakistan needs to prioritize mountain areas and implement targeted programs aimed at improving access to basic services, addressing gender inequalities, and promoting sustainable development. Global warming is a challenge to the sustainable development of all humanity. Innovation is the main driver of the world's development and a powerful response to economic development and environmental protection. In this paper, a bidirectional fixed effect model and spatial Durbin model are used to explore the impact mechanism, heterogeneity and spatial impact of the low-carbon effect of technological innovation based on panel data of 279 Chinese cities from 2010 to 2019. The findings indicate that (1) technological innovation significantly negatively impacts carbon intensity, while the impact of high-quality technological innovation is greater. After the robustness test with the instrumental variable method and DID method, the conclusion is still valid. (2) The low-carbon effect is stronger in cities where governments pay more attention to green development and in central China. (3) Technological innovation improves energy efficiency (direct mechanism) and optimizes energy and industrial structures (indirect mechanism), and the digital economy strengthens this effect. (4) Furthermore, innovation can negatively impact the carbon intensity of adjacent cities. This paper provides new evidence and perspectives on the impact of technological innovation on carbon emissions more precisely at the city level. The quality and stability of the ecological environment are inevitable requirements of sustainable development, and previous studies have confirmed that digital economy and technological innovation have a positive enabling effect on the ecological environment. Against the background, clarify the current coordinated development relationship and level of digital economy, technological innovation, and ecological environment (DTE), and put forward policy recommendations to promote the coordinated development. This paper utilizes China's provincial panel data from 2013 to 2020 to construct a measurement index system for the levels of development in the digital economy, technological innovation, and ecological environment. The coupling coordination model is applied to evaluate the coordination relationship and level of the DTE system. Additionally, a principal component factor analysis is conducted to examine the driving factors of collaborative development level. Results show that (1) the coupling coordination relationship continues to improve, especially in cities like Guangzhou, Beijing, and Zhejiang. In 2020, most of the DTE systems' coupling coordination in China's 30 provinces were in the basic coordination stage. (2) Besides Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and other economically developed cities that lag behind in ecological environment, the rest lag in technological innovation. (3) The economic development level, technological innovation ability, and environmental forcing mechanism are the main driving forces for the development of the coupling and coordination degree of the DTE system in Chinese provinces and cities. Green economic development is an effective tactic for China to cope with the predicament of resources and the environment. As "smoke-free industries", producer services are becoming the main contributors to urban green economic development (UGED). The paper adopts the super-efficiency EBM model to estimate the UGED index of 268 Chinese cities from 2005 to 2019. Based on the theoretical analysis, econometric models are constructed to systematically test how the specialized and diversified agglomeration of producer services impacts UGED. The findings reveal that both agglomeration modes considerably enhance UGED in the local area and its surroundings. Diversified agglomeration exerts a stronger radiation and promotion effect than specialized agglomeration. In addition, the impact of the two agglomeration modes on UGED demonstrates pronounced heterogeneity in urban scales, economic development stages, and industries. Furthermore, mechanism studies suggest that agglomeration substantially boosts UGED by improving human capital, technological innovation, and upgrading industrial structure. As such, our findings serve as an empirical basis for understanding the mechanism of the impact of PSA on UGED and also offer significant insight for local governments to adopt differentiated industrial policies to enhance the positive agglomeration effect on UGED. How to maintain the balanced stability and resilient development of rural systems is an important issue that needs urgent attention in the field of sustainable rural development at present. In this paper, the entropy method, spatial autocorrelation model, and Geodetector were used to explore the rural resilience level, spatial distribution characteristics, and driving factors of 31 cities in the urban agglomerations in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River (UAMRYR), and to put forward corresponding policy suggestions. The results are as follows: (1) From 2005 to 2020, rural resilience in the UAMRYR showed an upward trend with an average annual growth rate of 8.26%. The ranking of the three major urban agglomerations is Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomerations > Wuhan urban agglomerations > Poyang Lake urban agglomerations. (2) During the study period, the spatial distribution of rural resilience gradually developed from a negative correlation to a strong positive correlation and generally showed the characteristics of high in the west and low in the east. (3) The urbanization rate, the size and structure of the economy, the difference in consumption and income between urban and rural areas, the local fiscal revenue, and the number of village committees are the key factors affecting the level of rural resilience. On this basis, we proposed policy recommendations to improve the economic, social, and ecological resilience of rural areas in the UAMRYR. Sustainability is indispensable for cities to achieve long-term positive development. This paper evaluated the sustainability of 14 cities in Liaoning province from 2015 to 2019. A new weighting method was proposed that combined the subjective dimensional weights derived from sentiment analysis with the objective indicator weights derived from the entropy weight method. Sentiment analysis was applied to process the text information in the government work reports for obtaining the sentiment scores of the three dimensions of the economy, society and environment. In addition, the raw data of the indicators were used to measure their importance of the indicators. The assessment results showed that Shenyang and Dalian had a much better level of sustainable development than other cities in Liaoning Province, with Shenyang and Dalian both having assessed values above 0.45. The three dimensions of sustainable development were unbalanced. Overall, the cities of Liaoning Province had a low level of sustainability and poor sustainability momentum. Finally, in response to the poor performance of economic and social sustainability, it is suggested that the authorities should take measures to boost domestic consumption and give more spending on health care and science and technology. Rapid urbanization has increased the demand for more urban water resources, and water scarcity has limited the sustainable development of cities and regions. In this paper, all prefecture-level cities in Shandong Province in the lower Yellow River region are studied, an evaluation index system is established based on the water poverty index, and the improved entropy value method is applied to determine the index weights. At the same time, this paper explores the indicator correlations using Pearson correlation analysis and further explores the main obstacle factors for improving water security. This study intends to assess the current situation of water security in Shandong Province and provide suggestions for the sustainable improvement of water resources and sustainable economic and social development in Shandong Province. The results show that (1) from 2000 to 2020, the water poverty index at all levels in Shandong Province showed an upward trend, and the overall water security situation in the province improved significantly, with the overall five subsystem values of the WPI system climbing significantly. (2) Water supply pipeline density and landscape area ratio are strongly positively correlated. The centralized sewage treatment rate is strongly negatively correlated with the water consumption of 10,000 Yuan GDP and the water consumption of 10,000 Yuan industrial added value. (3) The low percentage of ecological water usage is the primary barrier preventing WPI improvement, according to calculations using the barrier level model. In addition, the high water consumption of GDP of 10,000 Yuan and industrial value added of 10,000 Yuan are factors affecting urban water security. The area should work to increase the rate at which its water resources are utilized, particularly the ratio at which industrial water is used repeatedly. The free flow of factors resulting from regional integration affects not only economic and social activities between cities, but also climate and environmental changes. Under the goal of sustainable development, regional integration as a policy pathway to lower carbon intensity has rarely been clarified. In light of this, using panel data of 279 prefecture-level cities in China from 2006 to 2019, this paper treats city cluster planning as a quasi-natural experiment of regional integration and aims to discuss the impact and mechanism of regional integration on carbon intensity through difference-in-differences (DID) method, mediating effect model and moderating effect model. The following results are reached: (1) The implementation of regional integration policy effectively reduces carbon intensity, and the conclusion still holds after a series of robustness tests. (2) Total factor productivity (TFP) is the mediator of regional integration to reduce carbon intensity, and population density, technological innovation and industrial upgrading are the moderators. (3) The effect of regional integration in reducing carbon intensity varies from city location and city features. The proposed theoretical framework of regional integration affecting carbon intensity, containing mediator and moderators, not only enriches the theoretical research in the field of environment and region, but also provides a new policy path for exploring sustainable development. The traditional view is that local governments are inclined to ease environmental regulations in response to fiscal pressure (FP) and alleviate FP by sacrificing the environment for economic development (ED). This paper takes Chinese Mainland resource-based cities (RBC) as the research sample but draws different conclusions. The research results are as follows: firstly, for RBC, although FP reduces environmental pollution (EP), it is not conducive to ED. Compared with non-resource-based cities (NRBC), the economic negative effect of FP in RBC is more obvious. Secondly, FP is detrimental to ED by reducing EP, and RBC have not sacrificed the environment to promote ED in the context of FP. This paper summarizes that the development path of RBC should be "optimizing government behavior → increasing FP → improving environmental quality → reducing ED level." Thirdly, the impact of FP on cities with slower economic growth and smaller economic gap is greater, and the impact of FP on cities with better environment is more obvious. This paper argues that facing FP, RBC in China will not trade EP for ED; at the same time, we suggest RBC in other countries in the face of the FP, not only thinking of promoting ED at the expense of the EP and ease the FP, but also the development of green ecological requirement, overall consideration of the relationship between EP and ED, and then achieve green and sustainable ED without degrading the environment as far as possible. Cities located in the Arctic often have extreme geographic and environmental contexts and unique sociopolitical and economic trajectories that, when combined with amplified effects of climate change in the region, impact future sustainable development. Well-recognized and standardized sustainable development indicator (SDI) frameworks such as ISO 37120 or UN-Habitat City Prosperity Index are often used to compare data across cities globally using comprehensive sets of indicators. While such indexes help characterize progress toward development and guide short- and long-term decision-making, they often lack relevance to specific contexts or characterize future visions of urban growth. To evaluate the extent of these deficiencies and to provide a comparative analysis of approaches to sustainable urban growth in the Arctic, this paper analyzes city planning documents for five northern cities - Anchorage (USA), Utqiagvik (USA), Reyjavik (ISL), Iqaluit, (CAN), Whitehorse, (CAN) - for goals, targets, and indicators and compare these to thematic areas and indicators defined by ISO 37120:2018 Sustainable Cities and Communities. The results confirm that although international SDI frameworks may be useful for comparative analysis of cities across diverse regions, they exclude important local factors that influence goal-oriented urban sustainability planning strategies employed in the Arctic region. Sponge city construction is an ideal approach to mitigate the degradation of urban water environments. Among road materials, permeable concrete pavement stands out due to its unique structure that allows rainwater runoff to flow through its pores. This paper analyzes the current application status and the prospect of different permeable pavement designs in China's sponge cities, aiming to offer valuable insights for urban planning and construction. Statistical analysis summarizes the spatial-temporal distribution patterns of urban flooding disasters in China and their causes. By comparing the characteristics and advantages of pervious concrete pavement with traditional concrete pavement, the potential of permeable concrete pavement in sponge city construction is summarized through case studies. The findings highlight that by adjusting the pore size, permeable concrete pavement can collect rainwater while filtering impurities, thereby purifying surface runoff. The range of the pervious coefficient should ideally fall within the range of 4~8 mm/s. In addition, the pavement's large contact area with the air and internal water evaporation contributes to its self-regulating capability, reducing the occurrence of extreme temperatures. Related experiments have shown that from 8 am to 12 pm, pervious concrete pavement can reduce the temperature by approximately 1 °C compared to conventional concrete. From 12 pm to 8 pm, this temperature difference increases to approximately 3 °C. With the rapid advancement of the deep integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and traditional industries, industrial intelligence has a greater influence on the economy and the environment, which is of great significance in promoting green development. However, the impact of industrial intelligence on green development and the mechanism of its impact are not yet clear. In light of this, this paper uses 284 Chinese cities as samples to examine the influence of industrial intelligence on green development, explores the impact path of industrial intelligence on green development through intra- and inter-industry linkage effects, and addresses the moderating role of environmental regulation intensity on the relationship between them. It is discovered that there is a U-shaped feature between industrial intelligence and green development, and environmental regulation intensity can smooth the curve relationship between them. Heterogeneity analysis found that regional characteristics, industry type, and city size will make the U-shaped impact different. Further mechanism testing reveals that the low level of industrial intelligence inhibits energy utilization efficiency and causes a low-end service industry structure, which is not conducive to green development. When the level of industrial intelligence is high, it promotes energy utilization efficiency and a high-end service industry structure, which is conducive to green development. The Chinese government seeks to promote economic growth and sustainable development while achieving carbon neutrality by establishing phased smart city pilots. Therefore, it is important to study whether smart city pilots can promote carbon emission efficiency (CEE). This paper constructs a multi-period difference-in-difference (DID) model based on panel data from 241 prefecture-level cities in China from 2007 to 2019, aiming to investigate the mechanism of the impact of smart city pilot policies (SCPP) on CEE and whether there is a rebound effect. The study found that smart city construction (SCC) significantly improves carbon efficiency, with pilot cities increasing their CEE by 1.4% compared to non-pilot cities. The conclusions remain robust under a variety of scenarios including the introduction of placebo tests, counterfactual tests, sample data screening, and omitted variable tests. The results of the mechanism test show that although the rebound effect can inhibit the improvement of CEE, the environment can be improved and the CEE can be enhanced through green technology innovation, industrial structure upgrading, energy structure optimization, environmental regulation effect, information technology support, and resource allocation effect. The heterogeneity results indicate that the SCPP is more effective in promoting CEE in cities in the eastern region, southern cities, environmentally friendly cities, large cities, and medium-sized cities. This study contributes to the existing literature in clarifying the environmental benefits of SCPP and provides valuable policy insights for cities to address climate change and sustainable development. Sponge cities are disaster-resilient and sustainable infrastructure, and the emergence of impervious surfaces hinders the construction of sponge cities. In response to the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, the study of the spatio-temporal evolution and influencing factors of impervious surfaces provides an effective basis for the construction of sponge cities. In this paper, multi-source remote sensing images (Landsat 4–5 TM was used in 2000 and 2010, Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS was used in 2020) were used as data sources to construct a multi-feature impervious surface estimation model. By combining and refining the advantages of MISI, NDBI, and BUAI feature indices, we obtained the impervious surface cover of Nanchang City in 2000, 2010, and 2020. And its spatio-temporal evolution characteristics were analyzed by using the ESDA. The main factors of the impervious surface were analyzed by using the ordinary panel data model and the spatial durbin model. Results: (1) From 2000 to 2020, the impervious surface area of Nanchang City increased from 516.13 to 1075.12 km2. The overall impervious surface distribution in Nanchang City expressed a significant neighborhood distribution; (2) socio-economic factors had a positive role in promoting the impervious surface of Nanchang City. Among them, the correlation coefficient of the economic development index (0.2332), real estate investment (0.1518), and gross industrial output value (0.0453) were the most significant in the local areas; (3) the economic development index (0.2307), real estate investment (0.0251), and passenger volume (0.1679) stimulated the growth of impervious surfaces in adjacent areas, and the total population (-0.8074) had a buffering effect on adjacent areas. In order to promote the sustainable development of the region, it is necessary to propose corresponding measures and suggestions based on the impervious surface of Nanchang City. Technological progress in favor of cleaner production is the key to achieving low-carbon development in China. The Ambient Air Quality Standard (AAQS) issued by the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) in 2012 was an essential policy for the central government to implement vertical environmental regulation. Therefore, based on the city-level panel data, this paper examines the impact of the central vertical regulation on urban environment-biased technological progress using the difference-in-differences method. The results show that central vertical regulation can significantly promote urban environment-friendly technological progress. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the driving effect of the central vertical regulation on urban environment-friendly technological progress is more obvious in the eastern regions, non-resource-based cities, large cities, and high-grade cities. Moreover, the channel analysis shows that the central vertical regulation mainly boosts the urban environmental technology progress toward cleaner production by strengthening government environmental governance, raising public environmental concern, and improving energy structure. Low carbon sustainable development (LCSD) has become an inevitable choice, for which China has put forward a "dual-carbon" policy. The purpose of this study is to capture the interaction between the environment and the economy in the context of this goal, thus evaluating LCSD level from a systematic perspective. This paper proposes a super slack based measurement (SBM) model with a non-equal weight structure to assess the LCSD level. Firstly, a maximum influence minimum redundancy (MIMR) index selection algorithm is designed to establish input and output index systems, which avoids redundancy indexes. Secondly, the objective function of the original super SBM employs an equal weight structure, which leads results inadequately reflect the research preferences. Therefore, the weights of indexes are introduced to form an improved super SBM. Finally, 40 cities along the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) are selected for empirical analysis. Results show that (1) the LCSD level of YRBE decreases from downstream to upstream to midstream; (2) Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Sichuan provinces have higher LCSD levels, while Hunan and Jiangxi provinces have lower levels; and (3) up to 2021, there are 32 effective cities and 8 ineffective cities. The research implies that balancing the economy-environment relationship is crucial for higher efficiency. The LCSD evaluation method not only reflects the coordination level between the economy and the environment, but also integrates the research preference into the results, providing decision support for the government to formulate carbon reduction policies and allocate resources. Realizing the coordination between the economic and environmental systems through a green growth model is an important goal for China to enter the high-quality development stage. Meanwhile, financial technology (fintech) is rapidly developing in China. To explore the relationship between the two, this research uses panel data from 276 cities in China from 2011 to 2022 and empirically tests through constructing econometric models and machine learning algorithms. The empirical result shows that fintech has an impact on green growth. Specifically, there is a U-shaped relationship between fintech and green growth, meaning that before a certain stage, fintech may have a certain inhibitory effect on green growth. After fintech exceeds a certain development level, it will promote the improvement of green growth. Further mediation tests show that innovation plays a mediating role in the impact of fintech on green growth. Additionally, this research also conducts consistency tests based on different criteria including the location, scale, and financial development level of cities. Based on the research findings, policy suggestions are proposed in this paper to promote the development of fintech and stimulate the growth of the green economy. Overall, our research sheds more light on the fintech-green growth linkage and provides new insights into comprehending the role of fintech in advancing towards a low-carbon economy. Enhancing resource cities' resilience and advancing their sustainable development are imperatives, particularly in light of the "dual-carbon" agenda. Double-difference and spatial double-difference models are developed based on the panel data of 281 Chinese cities from 2005 to 2020 to investigate the effects of implementing the National Plan for the Sustainable Development of Resource-Based Cities on the level of ecological resilience in Chinese cities. This paper found that the National Sustainable Development Plan for Resource-Based Cities significantly improves the ecological resilience level of Chinese cities, and the findings are robust. The impacts of implementing the Plan on the ecological resilience of cities of different growth types, regions, and resource types are heterogeneous. Further study finds a spatial spillover effect of implementing the Plan on the ecological resilience of cities, which can improve the ecological resilience level of neighboring cities through spillover effects while improving the ecological resilience level of cities in the region. This study explores the readiness of eight large Hungarian cities to adopt electric bike sharing systems as a sustainable transportation mode. By assessing 25 indicators related to infrastructure, safety, demographics, legislation, and transportation systems, we comprehensively understand each city's current situation and readiness level. By engaging experts, we derived weighted scores for key indicators to provide a comprehensive analysis of each city's potential. The results reveal varied readiness across cities, offering targeted insights for policymakers to enhance urban mobility sustainably. Our analysis reveals that certain cities, such as Budapest and Gyor, are better prepared for sustainable transportation than others. However, every city has positive and negative aspects that must be considered. Establishing infrastructure for cycling and connectivity to public transportation systems should be prioritized in Hungarian cities. Additionally, safety action plans should be implemented to address road safety concerns. Promoting cycling culture and electric vehicles is also essential to encourage the adoption of sustainable transportation modes. Sustainable development is a common goal across the world. As the core force to promote economic growth and enhance national competitiveness, the sustainable development of urban agglomeration is a key component of national strategy. This study explored the scale optimization in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration (YRDUA) under the framework of sustainable development. Results showed that the sustainability of the overall urban agglomeration development is not optimal. With the increase in cities, the sustainability of the city combination formed with Shanghai as the seed point showed a trend of increasing at first and then decreasing. When the number of city group is 6, the sustainable development goal (SDG) index score is the highest. It indicated that the combination formed by some cities may be superior to urban agglomeration in sustainability. Therefore, the concept of pan-metropolitan area was proposed, and at current stage, the pan-metropolitan area should be developed first to achieve sustainable development within a smaller urban group, and then to build high-quality and coordinated development at the entire urban agglomeration. To objectively and fairly evaluate the level of urban smart growth (USG) in Chinese cities from a fair perspective, it is necessary to use an internationally recognized and mature framework to quantify it. This research builds a USG evaluation index system by selecting 31 indicators from three dimensions based on the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from 2005 to 2019. Real-coded accelerated genetic algorithm–projection pursuit (RAGA-PP) techniques and exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) models are applied to examine the temporal and spatial gaps in USG levels among Chinese provinces. The results are as follows: (1) China's USG level exhibited a rising trend and obvious regional differences during the study period. (2) The USG level in China displays a spatial pattern that is high in the east and low in the west. High–high (H–H) and low–low (L–L) are the leading types of local spatial autocorrelation, and an inverted U-shaped distribution exists in the north–south direction. (4) Goal A is the key driver of improvements in the target USG level, while goals B and C are the main barriers to reaching the target USG level. These results are helpful for quantifying the level and spatial distribution of USG in China and expanding the theoretical connotation and application scope of the theoretical SDG framework. With the rapid development of the digital economy, its environmental impact, particularly on carbon dioxide emissions in resource-based cities, has emerged as a vital research topic. Resource-based cities, often central to traditional industries, are confronted with the dual challenges of environmental pollution and economic transformation. This study employs empirical analysis to examine the influence of the digital economy on carbon dioxide emissions in these cities. The findings reveal that the digital economy significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions, with this impact being more pronounced in the early stages of digital economic development and gradually diminishing thereafter. In the mechanism analysis, we found that the digital economy can reduce carbon dioxide emissions in resource-based cities by raising public concern about the environment. Moreover, the study highlights significant variations in carbon reduction effects among different types of resource-based cities, noting that stronger environmental regulations further enhance these effects. These insights not only provide a new theoretical perspective but also offer practical guidance for policymakers in promoting sustainable development within the digital economy. Sustainable development issues require comprehensive actions to achieve them – from national governments to local municipalities. There is a special need to form a comprehensive and balanced policy of sustainable socio-economic development at the municipal level. The article reveals the concept of sustainable development and key approaches to ensuring the management of the development of municipalities in Russia, taking into account the global principles of sustainable development. The hypothesis is put forward that the choice of a sustainable development strategy by municipal leaders largely depends on the economic state of the municipality, the political goals of municipal leaders-managers and the activity of the population. The research summarizes the materials of the study of the practice of municipal management in the municipality of one of the cities of the Moscow region. The current foreign experience of strategic documents developing focused on the active implementation of the principles of sustainable development is presented. This was done in order to study the "best practices" to activate the process of transition to sustainable development in Russia. The approach proposed by the authors to the development of a socio-economic development strategy is described in detail on the example of a Russian municipality – the "Stupino" urban district. Green infrastructure networks enhance the protection and improvement of urban ecological environments, augment the efficiency and quality of ecosystem services, and furnish residents with healthier and more comfortable living conditions. Although previous research has investigated the construction or optimization methods of green infrastructure networks, these studies have been relatively isolated and lacking in case studies for mountainous cities. In the development of green infrastructure, mountainous cities must specifically consider the impact of terrain on network construction. Taking Fuzhou, a mountainous city in China, as an example, this study constructs and optimizes the green infrastructure network by employing morphological spatial pattern analysis, connectivity analysis, the Minimum Cumulative Resistance model, and circuit theory. These methodologies increase the connectivity of the Green Infrastructure within the study area, thereby promoting the health of the local ecosystem and creating conducive circumstances for the city's sustainable development. The findings reveal that: (1) Green infrastructure in Fuzhou takes up 5366.38 ha, constituting 21.76% of the study area, primarily situated in the northwest and south; (2) Fuzhou's Green Infrastructure network comprises 10 hubs and 17 corridors with a hub area of 1306.98 ha, predominantly distributed in the mountains encircling the city, including Meifeng Mountain, Gaogai Mountain, and Qingliang Mountain; (3) Based on optimization, the circuit centrality index categorizes hub importance into three protection levels, pinpointing nine crucial protected areas in the corridors and 680 areas requiring enhancement, including 68 areas for first-level improvement, 149 areas for second-level improvement, and 463 areas for third-level improvement. This research offers a methodological reference for constructing and optimizing green infrastructure networks in mountainous cities, providing both theoretical and practical foundations for optimizing green infrastructure networks in Fuzhou City. Urban trees and forests show a better ecosystem with many benefits, including pure air quality. The development of urban green infrastructure (UGI) creates a better management system that greatly impacts social values in an urban system. The UGI and construction activities are receiving much attention for their effectiveness in addressing various urban ecological, social and economic issues. Using green infrastructure in stormwater management can reduce the influence on urban sewerage systems and, eventually, on building water resources. The main goal of the research is to optimize the green infrastructure to provide a less-pollution, well-organized, and pleasurable environment for the inhabitants. Various models are used to study the present rainfall-runoff scenario, but the stormwater management model (SWMM) is the most preferable and suggested model. Once the parameters are accessed, optimizing the green infrastructure (GI) will be easy. A complete SWMM model is evaluated over the complete surface, and a hydrological measurement is presented. The evaluation study presents various component percentages: asphalt (37%), green (27%), ceiling (21%), grit (12%), and cemented area (2%), which provides rainproof coverage of approximately 60%. A design is developed about the diverse events of GI in urban exploiting the SWMM and demonstrates its stimulus on the rainfall-runoff behaviour. In recent years, very little attention has been given to green spaces in urban areas, which not only increases pollution but also decreases the urbanization. Therefore, urban green spaces are more important to improve air quality and resident living standards. Over the given scenario and the rainfall event, a decline of the quantitative discharge parameters is evident, such as discharge volume (i.e., from 3.6 to 61.8) and the peak discharge rate (i.e., from 5.4 to 62.7%). The simulation results show that green areas give high satisfaction with low construction costs, which shows the superlative performance ratio of the examined measures. The development of a city's green infrastructure is increasingly being driven by low-carbon innovation (LCI). However, knowledge of how LCI affects green economic efficiency (GEE) in China is largely unknown. This study investigates the spatial effects of LCI on GEE in 285 Chinese prefecture-level cities. The empirical findings show that LCI exerts significant beneficial effects on its GEE but negative effects on its neighbors. The positive direct effects on GEE are offset by negative indirect effects due to the lack of spatial linkage effect and the existence of the siphon and crowding-out effects among cities. Using a mediating effect model, we have identified three channels of LCI that affect GEE: industrial structure, energy consumption structure, and human capital. A further heterogeneity analysis indicates that the impacts of LCI on GEE differ by region and city development level. Furthermore, LCI in the building, greenhouse gas treatment, transportation, and sewage and pollutant treatment categories could greatly enhance local GEE. The findings herein provide an empirical experience for accurately accessing the spatial effect of LCI on GEE, and offer a critical decision-making reference for implementing a cross-city green linkage development mechanism. Developing countries such as the Philippines have an increasing urbanization rate, resulting in both the positive and negative effects of socioeconomic growth, including environmental degradation. Thus, the emergence of research on the ecological interactions in urban ecosystems has been given more attention throughout the years. This systematic review gathered relevant studies from research platforms such as Web of Science, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and Google Scholar to assess the trends in urban ecology research based on publication date, study area, number of citations, methods employed, and most used keywords. 105 were recorded from 1982 to 2023, with 2022 having the most published studies. Most studies were conducted in Metropolitan Manila, Luzon Island, a region with high population density and economic activity. Employing survey questionnaires (21.4%), GIS and remote sensing techniques (16.8%), and biodiversity assessments (18.3%) were the methods that were mainly used in the studies recorded. The thematic analysis has subdivided the studies into urban landscape, urban systems, bio-ecological, and human ecology-based approaches in the context of the Philippines. Science-based solutions integrated each fundamental disciplines of urban ecology in studying Philippine cities can address the gaps exhibited. Although the country's scientific knowledge in urban ecology has evolved, this comprehensive review exposes the knowledge gaps in a temporal manner, especially in further studying Visayas and Mindanao islands and smaller peri-urban areas. Expanding to multidisciplinary approaches is recommended for more thorough understanding of Philippine urban ecology, which will help in decision-making toward a more sustainable future for Philippine cities. Using panel data for Chinese prefecture-level and above cities from 2003 to 2017, we employed the difference-in-differences (DID) method to explore whether innovative city constructions reduced carbon emissions. The results show that innovative city constructions significantly curb carbon emissions in Chinese cities, which is supported by a series of robustness tests. Specifically, we found that innovative city constructions could reduce carbon emissions by 5.21%, which is equivalent to a total of about 5.46 million tons. In addition, we provided evidence that innovative city constructions curb carbon emissions by promoting technological innovation, industrial upgrading and industrial green development, ecological improvement, and government intervention. Furthermore, heterogeneous results indicate that the carbon reduction effect of innovative city constructions is mainly found in eastern cities and cities with better industrial development and human capital base. Our findings further enrich the study on the environmental benefits of national innovation incentives and public policies and provide important insights in carbon neutrality and achieving sustainable development, especially for developing and emerging market countries. The evaluation of the sustainable development of resource-based cities is still one of the hotspots in today's social research. Taking Jining, Shandong Province, as the research object, this work combines a relevant emergy evaluation index system with system dynamics, establishes a resource-based city emergy flow system dynamics model, and studies sustainable development path in the next planning year. In the work, the key factors affecting the sustainable development of Jining are obtained through the coupling of regression and SD sensitivity analysis, and some scenarios are set up by combining them with the local 14th Five-year plan. Besides, the appropriate scenario (M–L–H–H) for Jining's future sustainable development is chosen in accordance with regional circumstances. That is, during the 14th Five-year Plan period, the appropriate development ranges for the growth rate of social fixed assets investment, the growth rate of raw coal emergy, the growth rate of grain emergy and the reduction rate of solid waste emergy are 17.5–18.3%, − 4.0 to − 3.2%, 1.8–2.6% and 4–4.8%. The methodology system constructed in this article can serve as a reference for similar studies, and the research findings can aid the government in formulating pertinent plans for resource-based cities. Western cities have been confronted with the challenges of 'urban shrinkage' as changes in economic and production models have caused population migrations. China, in its recent history, has experienced rapid and dynamic growth in its cities. However, as its economy is evolving, it too is being confronted with 'urban shrinkage' challenges. Populations have been shifting inside small and medium sized cities in response to problems created during this rapid growth period. Most heritage areas have suffered from depopulation, neglect and disinvestment. The historic Puhuiquan neighborhood in Yulin City is a classic example of the current Chinese version of 'urban shrinkage'. Yulin City, founded as a military city five centuries ago, has shifted its focus away from its historic purpose into a resource-based city. Yulin's planning developed new areas, drawing population out of the historic Puhuiquan neighborhood. This area is the home to a unique urban cultural landscape where land and architecture have merged to create the development of various types of 'cave' houses. Suffering from the effects of 'urban shrinkage', this research explores the causes and potential solutions for the area employing both 'smart shrinkage' and 'urban renewal' strategies, informed by local resident participation, to develop a sustainable renewal strategy for this heritage area. The aim of this study is to provide effective solutions to promote the transition of resource-based cities to low carbon and sustainable development. Firstly, this study investigates the background of low-carbon transformation of resource-based cities. Secondly, it introduces the application method of Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) in detail. Finally, this study proposes a comprehensive application of ChatGPT and artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm. The results show that the average energy utilization efficiency improvement index of the group using ChatGPT is 0.11. The average energy efficiency improvement index of the group using ABC algorithm is 0.02 higher than that of the control group. The integrated application of ChatGPT and ABC algorithm can further improve the low-carbon transformation effect of resource-based cities and achieve the goal of green development. As an essential section of the modern economic system, the tourism industry plays a crucial role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using the panel data of 284 Chinese cities, this study empirically explores whether and how the tourism economy (TE) can promote sustainable urban development (SUD). We first chose eco-efficiency to evaluate the level of SUD, which was assessed based on multi-source data and the super-EBM model. Then, a structural equation model including multiple pathways was introduced to reveal the TE's direct and indirect impact on SUD for the whole sample and sub-samples. Relevant policy recommendations were proposed based on spatial heterogeneity results. The main results are as follows: (1) The eco-efficiency shows a trend of improvement over the study period, and its spatial pattern has a strong path dependence. (2) The results of the whole sample indicate that the total effect of TE on SUD is significantly positive. (3) TE can affect SUD through multiple pathways. The single mediation pathways are TE → Economic Development (ED) → SUD, TE → Industrial Structure (IND) → SUD and TE → Environmental Regulation (ER) → SUD, and dual mediation pathways as TE → Opening-up (OPEN) → ED → SUD and TE → ER → IND → SUD.
