Approximately 700 ninth-grade students of each sex, representing the total population in that grade in agricultural towns in northern India and western United States, answered questionnaire items concerning family cohesiveness, decision-making, and autonomy. Results clearly showed adolescents perceived greater cohesiveness in India and more self-decisiveness in America. Fathers were seen as more influential in India than in the United States. Interviews with Indian fathers further confirmed the continued traditional orientation of the Hindu family. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
