The article presents proceedings of the Annual meeting of the Phycological Society of America at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Massachusetts, held between June 17-22, 1973. All sessions of the program at which contributed papers were presented are joint sessions of the Phycological Society of America and the Phycological Section of the Botanical Society of America. Various topics were covered in different sessions. Session one was on Taxonomy and Morphology while sessions two was on Physiology and Biochemistry.

Aspects of the educational, financial and administrative problems faced by the colleges in the U.S.; Plan of modernizing the educational curriculum by developing Courses in history, social science and political economy; View that education is a means of growth; Support of the trustees of the college to the plan laid out by Meiklejohn; View of faculties on the plan designed by Meiklejohn; Lack of support by the faculty members; Opposition of older alumni's to the plan; Intention of Meiklejohn to make students independent in his intellectual life; Protests against the resignation by undergraduates; Refusal to accept degrees form the college which had repudiated Meiklejohn.
