The article presents a discussion on the recent changes in the Canadian immigration regulations. The public discussions in Canada which ensued as a result of the White Paper on immigration are in a great measure responsible for the revised immigration regulations which came into force on October 1, 1967. The new regulations are based on the government White Paper. The regulations set up three categories of immigrants: sponsored, nominated and independent. Sponsorship rights previously limited in cases of applicants from certain countries, will apply on equal terms to all areas of the world, and thus, in future, as it were, no area of the world is "off limits" for sponsorship of immigrants by their relatives in Canada. This means that a close family relationship with a Canadian citizen or resident will make it easier for a potential immigrant to gain admission to Canada. For others, the current standards of education and professional skill are revised with the application of objective tests and point ratings in nine categories. Immigrants in this category, most of whom will have no relatives in Canada, will qualify for entry if they can compile 50 "assessment units" based on their education, skill, age, and six other factors.

The article presents information on ethnicity and occupational mobility. The article compares the degree of upward occupational mobility of the Greek and Slowak immigrants in Ontario city. Sociological studies have shown that most of the minority groups (racial and ethnic) in Canada tend to have low socioeconomic status. Canada indicated that ethnic differences have been important in building up the bottom layer of the stratification system in both agricultural and industrial settings. The occupations that most of the immigrant groups enter are those, which require little or no skill, have low wage levels, and make few linguistic demands. A review of sociological literature indicates that sociological research on the occupational mobility of Greek and Slowak immigrants in Canada is limited. A comparative study demonstrates accurate but different results concerning the occupational mobility of Greek and Slovak immigrants since each of the two ethnic groups is characterized by distinctive socioeconomic values in their former countries.

This articles discusses sociological evolution in Canada. The latest resources of modern civilisation are found close beside the forest primeval and the untilled prairie. The electric tramway runs out into the forest which is just cleared: in the shack built of rough logs, still surrounded by huge tree-stumps which have not been burnt, there are the electric light and the telephone. There are some facts and figures which must first be stated in order that the magnitude of the social evolution may be realised and its future possibilities recognised. The distribution of the population in the ten provinces, and the increase in each case in ten years, gives evidence of where the evolution is going on most rapidly. One may at least raise the question whether this concentration in one city is a desirable feature of the social evolution. It is the opinion of those who know their resources and possibilities that these provinces are being unduly neglected by immigrants, who are nearly all pushing westwards. Industry and commerce must depend on the development of natural resources in filed, forest, mine, or fishery; and one may be doubtful whether the proportion of the middlemen is not too great, whether the new society is not imitating too closely the older for its best development.

The article presents information on the implementation and exemptions of the Chinese Immigration Act of 1885 in Canada. The Act imposes $50 as tax on Chinese for entering Canada by ship or otherwise. It also restricts the number of Chinese to one for fifty tons in a ship. The Act exempts the suite and servants of the diplomats, and those who bring certain documentary evidence of their identity. According to the Section 17 of the Act that the tribunals composed of Chinese for hearing any offense of Chinese people should be suppressed. The Chinese Regulation Act of 1884 imposed $10 annually on every Chinese above the age of fourteen.

A sample survey of post-war immigrants in Canada, undertaken in 1961, showed significant differences between immigrants from Great Britain and those from other countries in the occupations of fathers, immigrants' occupations in former country, first occupation in Canada and occupation at the time of the survey. Immigration tended to reinforce the existing tendency for Canadians of British origin or descent to have a higher social status than others. Patterns of intergenerational and intragenerational mobility were examined. It was found that at the time of the survey, 15 per cent of the immigrants had the same social status as the fathers, the remainder having raised and fallen in almost equal proportions. Compared with the occupation in the former country, 15 per cent had risen in status in their first employment in Canada and 31 per cent had risen at the time of the survey. Forty-four per cent fell in status in their first employment and 27 per cent were still below the level of their former occupation at the time of the survey. However, only 14 per cent felt that their position in the community had fallen and 7 per cent that their standard of living had declined.
