The versification of Nigerian Civil War poetry which started during and immediately after the civil war in 1970 has continued to resonate in the writings of the Niger Delta poets even in the present twenty first century. In Nigeria as a whole, the pioneers in war poetry include Wole Soyinka, J. P. Clark, Christopher Okigbo and Essie Enekwe. Like the above poets, the poets from the Niger Delta area of Nigeria have also continued to vent their anger on the devastating effects of the war on the people of that region. These poets have shown their sense of history through the documentation of the harrowing and bitter experiences of the casualties of the war which has been aptly described as the ugliest episode in the history of postcolonial Nigeria. Not only that, its literature has been portrayed as the most recurring theme in Nigerian literature. This paper attempts to re-affirm that even in the new millennium, Niger Delta poets have, unabatedly, reminded us of the genocide, rape and torture that greeted the war. The paper also attempts to show that the present prevailing scenarios in that part of the country today, which have resulted into kidnapping, banditry, rape, protests, and all sorts, are echoes of an impending civil war, if not nipped in the bud. The poems of a selected Niger Delta poets: Ebi Yeibo, Hope Eghagha, Ekanpou Enewaridideke and others who write between the year 2000 and the present are used to justify the above. The paper argues that reference to the war and its antecedents is still part of the thematic directions of Nigerian, albeit Niger Delta poetry in the twenty first century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes Japanese Zen monk Sesson Yūbai’s (1290–1347) long poem Minzanka written in Chinese, especially focusing on the way its formal properties influence the way in which natural phenomena are described in it. Afterwards, these stylistic features are contrasted with Japanese language poetry of the period, including waka, renga, and wakan renku forms, and also with Tsurezuregusa, a prosaic Medieval Japanese text. The full working translation of Minzanka is included in the paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper is an attempt to disambiguate a set of phenomena forming a new Romantic paradigm in Adam Mickiewicz's Poezje (Poetry). It describes the mode in which, in connection with the constitutive occurrence of ballads, namely the breaking of empirical vision of the world, all the crucial (textual, imagery, existential, and subjective) phenomena of the work mingle into a multi-layer model to generate new relations and shapes. This event core of the ballads is also linked with developing a personal ethic horizon and individual romantic identity based on it. The paper reveals that this identity is substantially formed in the subjective sphere of the literary piece, on the level of the narrator and the author of Ballady i romanse (Ballads and Romances). Parallel phenomena are examined in the lyrical pieces of the Poetry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The extraction and construction of the knowledge graph related to the entity of ancient poems are helpful to excavate the connection between ancient poems, and it is of great significance to inherit the traditional Chinese culture. This paper proposes an Albert-BiLSTM-MHA-CRF model for entity extraction in ancient poems. Based on the BiLSTM-CRF model, the author introduces the Albert pretraining model and the multihead self-attention mechanism to extract character vectors and enhance the generalization ability of word embedding vectors and the potential semantics between characters of the model, depending on weight and other feature extraction capabilities. The experiment is carried out in the corpus of ancient poetry, and the model is compared with Bert-BiLSTM-CRF, BiLSTM-CRF, and CRF model. The results show that the entity extraction effect of ancient poetry is significantly improved, and the harmonic average value is 97.17%. Compared with Bert model as the pretraining model, Albert model reduces the time by 19.56%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

POETRY (Literary form) , *LITERARY criticism , *POETRY writing - Abstract
Critics often present Eliot as a poet who emphasizes subjective states or moods as concrete elements of a readily delineable interiority. Such a view suggests that Eliot perceives inwardness as a stable, substantive essence constitutive of individuals' sense of self. But to essentialize the self in this way necessarily constructs an oppositional relation between the self (the inner) and the "reality" external to that self (the outer). However, as his graduate work in philosophy and social theory makes clear, Eliot in fact perceives interiority and exteriority in mutually constitutive dialectical tension with one another. Neither term exists in isolation; each roots itself constitutively in relation to the other. Eliot's poetry from this early period reflects these views as well. In "Portrait of a Lady," one of his first mature poems, Eliot portrays subjectivity dialectically, as a product of subject/object interrelations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

POETICS ,LITERARY form ,QUALITATIVE research ,MARKETING research ,POETRY (Literary form) - Abstract
Purpose: Narrative accounts of subjective consumer experience are, in one form or another, an essential of qualitative market research. Ethnographic research and ethnographic poetry have obvious connections with the literary form, yet this form has had limited application. Based on the assumption that poetry as a craft is a somewhat limited narrative in ethnographic studies and specifically in studies that attend a consumer vulnerability agenda, this paper aims to contribute to a literary-based perspective. This paper advocates for ethnographic poetry as a consideration of disseminating qualitative data for those researchers immersed in ethnographic research with diverse and vulnerable populations. Design/methodology/approach: The paper draws on a range of extant literature to draw out the distinguishing features of ethnographic poetry, in which to situate ethnographic narratives of two studies of consumer vulnerability. To assist in this, scholarly discussion in the paper is interposed with a series of interludes written in the ethnographic poetic style. These interludes are intended to epitomise merits of such an interpretive research approach. Findings: This is a research paper seeking to draw attention to, and develop a relatively neglected research approach, ethnographic poetry. Researcher reflections, drawn from two ethnographic studies, suggest some tangible consequences of this research to generate further discussion of consumer vulnerability. Research limitations/implications: The overall aim is to extend discussion of the particular qualities of ethnographic poetry that might contribute to better serve qualitative research approaches, when conducting ethnographic research. Practical implications: The paper advocates a stronger focus on ethnographic poetry to liberate the imagination of researchers and readers alike to enrich and compliment the analysis of narrative forms of qualitative data drawn from an ethnographic approach. Originality/value: This paper addresses the concept of ethnographic poetry, stemming from narrative-based qualitative research, which will be entirely new to many researchers and practitioners. It suggests tangible benefits that this new perception could bring to ethnographic research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trainers played an immensely important role in ancient sports. Yet, they often disappear in the descriptions of great athletic feats in epinician poetry, the poems of praise that celebrated great athletes in the ancient world. This paper examines the manner in which trainers fade from epinician narrative and argues that their disappearance may have to do with the nature of the body and the role of trainers and physicians in the Greek world. Admitting the importance of trainers might challenge the notion that the greatness of athletes stemmed from birth and breeding. The fact that trainers sold their services as commodities would exacerbate this. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper offers a fresh perspective on the representation of the Muse(s) in Pindar. Two recent studies addressing this issue have argued for a clear distinction between the epinikia and the cult songs. This paper aims to reassess this approach and to offer a different perspective on the problem, focusing on the metaphors applied to the relationship with the Muse(s). While the image as drawn by Kantzios and Maslov emerges as simplistic, some of the metaphors can be linked to the given genre because they are based on analogies to the context of performance, which also enhance the cognitive effect of the poems. This paper provides an unexpected and extraordinary example of research data from a Photovoice project conducted with ex-prisoners in South Australia. It focusses on the contribution made by one of the participants who chose the pseudonym 'Deer'. Deer joins me as a co-author, her voice shines in this paper, albeit through a pseudonym she chose for the project. Photovoice, a qualitative research method, uses a feminist framework and typically produces rich thick accounts of lives and experiences that cannot be adequately captured by quantitative research. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of research data collection each have merits, but qualitative approaches tend to engage the researcher, participant and later the reader on a more personal level. Moreover, unexpected findings are more likely to arise when researchers ask participants to express what they believe is important to their experience. This paper provides such an example, where the unexpected gift of poetry adds a deeper dimension to research findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FEMINISM in literature ,INDIC poetry (English) ,POETICS ,POETRY (Literary form) - Abstract
The paper attempts an analytical study of the poetics of Kamala Das through the specific prism of the feminist ideology. Das, with her novel spectrum of poetry, announced the arrival of a fresh and indomitable female voice on the Indian English literary scene. Debunking the artifice of patriarchy and its oppressive function, she set out to live her life on her own terms. Her writings speak volumes about her extremely free and courageous outlook on life. We barely meet any inhibitions or ambiguities in her. Her verse verily reflects what she felt, thought and actually lived out. She is India's answer to the American coterie of confessional poets as she limns a brutally honest portrait of her deeply felt angst, pain and bewilderment against the male-dominated superstructure in our society, in the most striking of confessional tones. A perusal of her ballistic verse opens floodgates to the understanding of the plight and predicament of the females' section entrenched against the particular backdrop of the stereotypical Indian set up. Her anger and exasperation become her panacea. The fire that she sets on the paper through her verse becomes a torch lighting up the pathway to a more dignified, humanistic and cohesive status for the female folk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Besides numerous positive transformations and unique opportunities in language pedagogy, the post-method era brought with itself several challenges for language teachers. After intensive research and empirical studies, the use of literature was welcomed in ELT classrooms. But the question arises as to what extent and in what ways does literature support language learning? In an attempt to answer these questions and fill this lacuna, the present paper highlights ways in which literature assist language teachers. Moreover, the paper presents resourceful strategies to frame exercises using poems for ELT classroom. Shakespeare's Sonnet 65 is used to illustrate some vital themes explored in this paper. In spite of the observed difficulty level of the sonnet and the layers of meaning it encapsulates, dynamic and engaging activities can be crafted out of this poem. Since the elements discussed in this study are ubiquitous to the genre of poetry, therefore the use of the presented methodology would also be universal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores what light an examination of the poetry of witness to trauma can shed on the treatment of trauma victims. In particular it looks at how the cultural act of writing poetry can restore a sense of a third to traumatized people. The paper examines in detail: "Dedication" by Czeslaw Milosz. Two aspects of the author's approach to the subject emerge: (1) the author links the details of the trauma experience to details in the non-traumatized world, and (2) the author describes his own limitations and inadequacy as witnesses. A case example is offered of a couple where one partner suffered an extremely traumatic childhood is described. In the end, the therapist and the husband admit their helplessness in the face of the wife's trauma, and this provides a kind of healing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

England's ambassador in Madrid from 1620 to 1624 and from 1635 to 1638, Sir Walter Aston was a fluent speaker of Castilian and convert to Catholicism. His interest in Spanish literary culture, in circulation of poetry in manuscript, and in translation played a key role in his negotiation of the religious and political differences that affected him and his circle personally and divided the state he served. The Astons' ambivalent position made them valuable intermediaries and at the same time vulnerably peripheral. Alexander Samson identifies a key performance witnessed by Aston in Spain on the eve of the Spanish match that is linked with a sonnet found in Secretary of State Edward Conway's papers and with the later translation by Aston's secretary, Sir Richard Fanshawe, of Antonio Hurtado de Mendoza's play Querer por sólo querer. This paper explores the performance of spoken word poetry at three venues in East London through an attention to the ways in which participants experience and conceptualize these expressive events. Drawing from observation at events and interviews with performers, this paper illuminates the most commonly reported motivations behind the uptake of this genre of performance: achieving emotional healing and providing coping tools to others. By investigating these motivations, this paper considers how spoken word performance can become a personal and collective process of care, where performers overcome individual struggle through shifting bodily orientations and attitudes, while attuning affectively with others through pedagogical caretaking relations. There is a long‐standing debate about whether poetry can make a substantive contribution to philosophy with compelling arguments to show that poetry and philosophy involve distinct modes of thought and aims, albeit with similar concerns. This paper argues that reading lyric poetry can play a substantive role in philosophy by helping the philosopher understand how to forge connections with the perspectives of others. The paper takes the view that poetry is not directly philosophical but can play an important role in developing the philosopher's awareness of how perspective shapes beliefs and thought processes. Following Robert Nozick, David Lewis, and Helen Beebee, it argues for the need to broaden our conception of the aims of philosophy beyond aiming for conclusive proof, at the least where philosophical inquiry is focused on questions of value. It then shows how poetry cultivates an intellectual virtue essential to philosophy aimed at uncovering equilibria and collective understanding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is about poetry and pilgrimage in Tembilahan, Indragiri Hilir, where Abdurrahman Siddiq, a prominent alim who lived in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, is buried. In addition to his treatises on theology, mysticism, and ethics, Abdurrahman Siddiq is also renowned for his contribution to Islamic literature in Sumatra. He is a famous Islamic scholar and is respected in Indragiri Hilir for his spiritual messages delivered in the form of sya'ir (poetry). Malay Muslims have preserved the saint's legacy through the act of pilgrimage and various cultural events and festivals. This paper argues that the recitation of Abdurrahman Siddiq's poems during the pilgrimage to Tembilahan and Islamic festivals shows how Malay Muslims honor their respected saint. Set within the frame of World Literature, and dwelling on the multifaceted concept of networking, this paper aims to provide a temporal pattern concerning the transfer/import of postwar North American poetic trends within the Romanian poetry of the 1980s. By relating the aestheticized model of Romanian (neo)modernism to the more direct, biographical discourse of the Beat poetry, the influence of which emerged upfront in Romanian poetry starting from the late 1970s, as well to the Confessional model the paper explores overlapping temporalities within the two literary systems, whereby the paradigms of (neo)modernism and postmodernism, respectively, clashed, due to the homogenizing effect of the communist context. Along these lines, I outline the notion of diachrony in synchrony of the Romanian poetry of the early 1980s, when several poetic patterns pertaining to different stages of North American poetry exerted a simultaneous influence during a very short time interval. The attempts made by Romanian poets to synchronize with, or borrow from Anglo-American literature, also involved relaying certain attitudes, views, and values – both aesthetic and largely ideological – that were specific to the source culture. MACHINE learning ,POETRY (Literary form) - Abstract
This paper presents the study of the author's style of A.S. Pushkin based on the comparison of his poetic texts with the texts of contemporary poets. The purpose of this study is to determine the features of the author's style of A.S. Pushkin using machine learning methods. This paper describes the construction of several classifications based on different groups of features, as well as the classification based on a combined set of features from different groups. The quality of all constructed classifications is also analyzed; special attention is paid to the interpretation of the neural network solution and the identification of features of the author's style. For the past four decades, biomedical science has transformed clinical outcomes for HIV and AIDS. However, the social, economic and gendered determinants of HIV remain largely intact. The social science and humanities offer concepts and methods for articulating why these remain intractable. I used poetic inquiry – an arts-based, qualitative approach – as I reviewed literature on the "end of AIDS, and post-AIDS". As I did so, I considered what contribution the social sciences and humanities could make in moving us closer to these ideals. Several themes and found poems emerged in this reading: (1) how language oversimplifies complex social realities; (2) the voices of people living with HIV and AIDS must be included; (3) HIV and AIDS intersects with social inequalities; (4) social and structural issues are no barrier to HIV prevention and (5) the need for radical interdisciplinarity. The paper concludes that the end of AIDS requires responses that are integrated, holistic and that radically challenge our silo'd disciplinary boundaries and frames. The social sciences and humanities are key to this charge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper argues that two crucial episodes of Odysseus' life from Homer's Odyssey are resonant with Iliadic scenes highlighting the fail0d leadership of Hector, Agamemnon, and Achilles. These resonances invited ancient audiences of the Homeric poems to see moments of failure in Odysseus' leadership, and to criticize his desire for revenge and military glory at the end of the Odyssey. This paper reexamines the literary influence of Nicander's Theriaca on the snake episode in Lucan's Bellum civile Book 9. Although often cited as an early zoological source, Nicander's contributions to the aesthetic and thematic aspects of Lucan's epic have gone largely overlooked. While his zoological knowledge drew mostly from intermediary sources such as Aemilius Macer, Lucan's use of venomous serpents as disruptive, destabilizing forces closely follows the poetic innovations of the Theriaca. Contrasting the unknowable, unpredictable threat of venomous creatures with horrifyingly graphic depictions of their bites, both authors construct poetic works that challenge and subvert contemporary literary and intellectual conventions. POETRY (Literary form) ,LANGUAGE & languages ,AUTHORS - Abstract
In this paper, we are interested in pointing out the importance of Pythagoreanism as a possible philosophical path to sustain Western thought, according to María Zambrano’s criteria. In her El hombre y lo divino, Zambrano questions the decisions that philosophy has adopted in its origin and proposes an integrative reason that is capable of including the feeling and the becoming of life in consideration of thought. From this perspective, we will point out the original contribution of Pythagoreanism, its dependence on the “sacred core,” and its expression through alternative forms of language that reflect perceived but not generated harmonies. We will highlight the Orphic basis of thought since its fundamental notions serve the meanings Zambrano prioritizes. We will also point out the consonances between Pythagoreanism and poetic reason, on which the author proposes a different way of thinking from current European systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Greek manuscript tradition transmits various fragments of works with the title Περὶ ποιητῶν, composed by both philosophers and grammarians from the Classical to the Imperial periods. The aim of this paper is to analyse these surviving fragments with a view to delineating the contents, forms, and characteristics of this type of literature. In the first part, I propose a survey of all authors and fragments of ancient Greek works On Poets. The second section outlines their literary-historical profile. Based on comparison with ancient works treating similar topics, I suggest a unitary reading of the writings Περὶ ποιητῶν. Through a combination of biographical, exegetical, theoretical, and (perhaps) technical information, this type of literature appears to have comprised the earliest "histories" of ancient poetry. In an autobiographical exploration, this paper seeks out the journalist, writer, and publisher Juan Cruz to analyze the shaping of his own editorial poetry. In doing so, this article pictures the author’s hermeneutical portrait drawing on the discursive regularities within his own writings. Light is shed on the features and characteristics defining the good publisher and the codes that govern the publishing field. In a personal paper about the author's animus, Watsky explores his fascination with Louise Glück, after attempting to solicit first her poetry for Jung Journal and then an interview about her voice in her poetry shortly after her death. He realized he had projected his anima onto a complete stranger known only through her writing. Suspicious of his motives, he proceeds to read her entire oeuvre during a two-week period, exploring their intersections and their divergences. Watsky then narrates a previous projection onto the writer Joanna Field who turned out to be the Freudian analyst Marion Milner. After reading all of her work and convinced that she had been influenced by Jung, he sought her out in Hamstead, England. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
