From the moment stationer Thomas Thorpe introduced Shakespeare's Sonnets with a dedication to "THE. ONLY. BEGETTER ... Mr. W.H.," readers have been encouraged to read these lyrics as the fruit of a monogamous reproductive relationship between the poet and a more powerful patron. Yet when we turn to John Donne's contemporaneous manuscript sonnets to young men (verse letters rarely paired with Shakespeare's printed poems), we find a series of queer lyrics that hail a "begetter" while also practicing more promiscuous modes of collaborative lyric making. Placing Donne's and Shakespeare's male-addressed sonnets alongside one another, this essay proposes that the framework of poet and "begetter" offers a cover for a range of alternate poetic partnerships. To glimpse these sensuous communal relations at work is to see the Sonnets as less exclusive, and more invested in shared modes of composition and circulation, than we have presumed. The article discusses the date of an unnamed sonnet by poet George Wyatt of Boxley, which is contained in the collection British Library, Additional Manuscripts 62135-8. The poem, identified as part of Add. MS 62135 (item 21), is confirmed to be by Wyatt via testimony from his nephew William Scott. Scott's references to the second Earl of Essex indicate that Wyatt's poem was written before 1599, while his quotations of works written in the 1590s, as well as the 1582 publication of the translation Douay Rheims Bible to which he refers, mean that it was written after those works.

The article focuses on the sonnet "Grandeza en la humildad," written by nineteenth-century English poet Gerard Manley Hopkins in honor of the 1888 canonization of Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez. Topics discussed include the letter written by Hopkins to fellow poet Robert Bridges about this poem, the probable recitation of the poem at an event organized by the Asociación de Seglares Católicos, and the modifications to the title of the poem.

In her Elegiac Sonnets, Charlotte Smith presents the reader with a suffering poetic persona, one heavily burdened by a melancholic longing for death as a release from the ills of the world. Although this image of a despairing sentimental heroine cultivates a perception that this persona, or even Smith herself, harbours suicidal intentions, this essay argues that such desires remain inert throughout the sonnet sequence. In comparing Smith's imagining of Werther's suicidal experience - as articulated in a five-sonnet sequence within the Elegiac Sonnets - with the envisioned dejection of Smith's poetic persona, it is arguable that Smith is, instead, careful to delineate the ways in which these respective experiences diverge, and how the persistence of reason in particular, as both a blessing and a curse, prevents Smith's speaker from following Werther to the grave. Finally, it is a further reminder that (literary) suicide, often seen as the quintessentially transcendent Romantic destiny, was not a viable option for Romantic female writers who aspired to sympathetic identification and elegiac remembrance. This article reevaluates Shakespeare's sonnets 153 and 154 within the context of the 1609 Quarto, suggesting that only one of these anacreontics properly belongs to the sequence. The article first considers other moments of unintentional repetition in Shakespeare's corpus to provide evidence that Shakespeare's manuscript cancellations may have been overlooked by printers. Using 1) the bibliographic features of the Quarto, 2) Sonnet 153's thematic and formal linkages to the preceding sequence, and 3) the aptness of 153 rather than 154 as a bridge to A Lover's Complaint, the article argues that Shakespeare's likely cancellation of 154 was ignored in Eld's print shop for convenience or aesthetic concerns. While we may never know what shape Shakespeare's Sonnets took in manuscript, this article reclaims 153 as an important conclusion to the sequence, challenging a tradition of criticism in which the curious doubling of these two sonnets has often removed them from serious consideration. The article studies voluntary human suffering as the sacrament of salvation from a perspective of English poet Gerard Manley Hopkins. It explains how Hopkins has sacrificed his love and passion for sensuous beauty and pleasure for spiritual perfection. It also examines the use of conflict and suffering, which emerge from his fundamental belief in natural individuality, as themes of his sonnets.

The article presents an examination of the Holy Sonnets written by English Renaissance poet and divine John Donne. While previous research has examined the sonnets from a religious and theological perspective, the author attempts to explore the psychological context of Donne's writing by examining them in relation to other early modern texts that focused on the passions. In order to do so, the author examines "The Passions of the Minde in Generall," by Thomas Wright and "A Treatise of the Passions and Faculties of the Soule of Man," by Edward Reynolds.
