In the present study, adsorption of colour and other pollutants from agro-based paper mill effluent onto fabricated coal fly ash nanoparticles (CFA-N) have been investigated. Response surface methodology was applied to evaluate the operational conditions for maximum ouster of colour from effluent by nano structured CFA-N. Maximum reduction in colour (92.45%) and other pollutants were obtained at optimum conditions: 60 min interaction time, 60 g/L adsorbent dosage and 80 rpm agitation rate. The regression coefficient values (adjusted R2 = 0.7169; predicted R2 = 0.7539) established harmony between predicted and the experimental data. The adsorption equilibrium results matched perfectly with both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms with maximum adsorption capacity of 250 platinum–cobalt/g. Additionally, the efficacy of CFA-N was also assessed in a continuous column mode. Furthermore, the feasibility of treated effluent for irrigation purpose was checked by growing the plant Solanum lycopersicum. Overall, the findings demonstrated the outstanding role of inexpensive and abundantly available CFA-N in treatment of paper mill effluent to the required compliance levels. This study focuses on the mineral carbonation to capture CO2 using an alkaline industrial waste, the grits, formed during the kraft pulp production process. An indirect mineral carbonation route was adopted, composed by two steps: first the extraction of calcium from the grits and second the precipitation of calcium carbonate. Firstly, four solvents were analyzed (HNO3, CH3COOH, NaOH and NH4Cl). Only HNO3 and CH3COOH have shown significant extraction efficiencies of 79.4 and 73.2 %, respectively, after 2 h at 30 °C. Kinetic tests demonstrated that equilibrium conditions are reached after 60 min. Since the nitric acid is a corrosive acid and with high associated costs, the acetic acid was selected for the dissolution of grits and extraction of calcium. The optimal conditions determined were an acetic acid concentration of 2 M, solid/liquid ratio of 30 g/L and temperature of 45 °C with an efficiency approximately of 77 %. In the second step, carbonation experiments were performed contacting the Ca-rich liquor, obtained from the extraction step, with a flux of pure CO2 gaseous in a stainless inox reactor. The optimal conditions determined were 30 °C and 30 bar, reaching a carbonation efficiency of 74 %, corresponding a CO2 sequestration capacity of 460 kg CO2/ton of grits.

Paper sludge is the water treatment waste, which produced during paper production. Paper sludge (PS) waste utilization is the common problem in the EU and internationally. According to the waste management directive No. 2008/98/EC, paper sludge waste should not be utilized in landfills. In the European Union, alone 93 million tons of PS generated yearly. Nowadays most of the paper sludge waste used as fuel for incineration power plants (up to 55 %). According to waste management legislation such waste management should be avoided as well. Very small portion (10 %) of PS is used in construction sector. In construction, paper sludge used as additive in concrete composite materials. Such legislation of waste management generates the motivation of this study. In this study authors propose to produce composite panels in which PS is the main material of composite. As the binding material, clay proposed due to its good binding properties and therefore its natural material. Such produced panels proposed to use it for sound absorption applications. To determine composites sound absorption coefficient standard ISO 10534-2 method was used. The sound absorption coefficient in different octave bands reached up to 0.59.

A discussion is currently under way in the literature on the sustainable benefits of recycling material, particularly paper, which has high global consumption and polluting capacity. Optimized planning of waste paper recycling networks stimulates sustainable processing efficiency, motivating the investigation of quantitative methods to guide decision-making. The objective of this article is to review papers that present quantitative models for planning waste paper recycling networks considering optimization of the echelons of this process, to analyze the evolution of research, find research opportunities and contribute to future research. The article presents an analysis of five categories of the selected studies: I—evolution of publications; II—echelons considered in different waste paper recycling systems; III—the sustainability pillars considered in the objectives of the formulated model; IV—formulations and techniques used; and V—uncertainty analysis. The proposal for waste paper recycling networks involves summary of the echelons considered in selected articles, to help future analysis. Research suggestions involving sustainability objectives, especially considering social issues, using different solution techniques and considering uncertainty were identified. This study, by reviewing the articles and identifying possibilities for future research, contributes to the development of research using quantitative methods for the efficient management of waste paper recycling networks or similar arrangements.

Development of selective and sensitive methods for on-site assay of tetracycline (TC) is of great significance for public health and food safety. Herein, a valid ratiometric fluorescence strategy using g-C3N4 nanosheets coupled with Eu3+ is designed for the assay of TC. In this strategy, both Eu3+ and g-C3N4 nanosheets serve as the recognition units of TC. The blue fluorescence of g-C3N4 nanosheets can be quenched by TC via the inner filter effect (IFE); meanwhile, the red fluorescence of Eu3+ can be enhanced by TC through the antenna effect (AE). The synergistic effect of AE and IFE caused by TC makes the developed ratiometric fluorescent sensor display a wide linear range for TC from 0.25 to 80 μM with a detection limit of 6.5 nM and a significant fluorescence color evolution from blue to red. Given its simplicity, free-label, excellent selectivity, high sensitivity, and recognizable color change, point-of-care testing systems, including smartphones and test paper-based assays, are developed for the visual sensing of TC. The integration of smartphones and test paper on a ratiometric fluorescent sensor greatly reduces the detection cost and time, providing a promising method for the qualitative discernment and semi-quantitative assay of TC on-site. Moreover, the potential application of the approach is also verified by detecting TC in milk.

The scope of the Nordtest method is to evaluate the moisture buffer value (MBV) of materials exposed to indoor air. The test is intended to simulate daily variations with relative humidity (RH) between 75 % during 8 hours and 33 % during 16 hours. The specimens follow a recipe that consists of waste paper, glue and water. Specimens made of paper plaster were covered with different colours. The results of the experiment showed that the type of paint used and the number of layers applied affected the MBV. Natural colours have a better moisture permeability than chemical paints, but the number of natural colour layers affects the MBV. The higher the number of layers, the lower the MBV.

Around 60% of the paper worldwide is made from recovered paper. Especially adhesive contaminants, so called stickies, reduce paper quality. To remove stickies but at the same time keep as many valuable fibers as possible, multi-stage screening systems with several interconnected pressure screens are used. When planning such systems, suitable screens have to be selected and their interconnection as well as operational parameters have to be defined considering multiple conflicting objectives. In this contribution, we present a Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Program to optimize system layout, component selection and operation to find a suitable trade-off between output quality and yield.

A series of industrial experimental tests on the freeze treatment of colloidal sludge lignin precipitates was carried out under natural conditions. Changes in the physical and chemical properties of the precipitates were studied. It is established that three fractions are formed following the freeze treatment of colloidal sludge lignin precipitates, including demineralized water (up to 25 %), mineralized water (up to 15 %) and a restructured colloidal precipitate (up to 60 %). The total volume of the precipitate is shown to decrease to 40 %. Freezing precipitation of colloidal lignin slurry of "the Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill" leads to a decrease in toxicity from the third to the fifth class of danger. On the basis of frozen sediments, the lignin sludge of OJSC Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill with the addition of other waste from the Baikal region, a fertile soil was obtained that corresponds to GOST R 54651-2011 "Organic fertilizers on the basis of sewage sludge. Specifications".

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have been fabricated in various ways to improve flexibility. Flexibility could be enhanced via active materials, separators, electrodes, and electrolytes, which could then be integrated to form flexible electronic devices with promising electrochemical properties compared to traditional non-flexible Li-ion batteries. Recent progress towards flexible Li- ion batteries fabrication, materials, and their electrochemical properties are investigated in this review. Additionally, recent developments in electronic devices utilizing flexible batteries and their future applications are explored. Portable and wearable electronics, as the primary beneficiaries of the flexible, rechargeable, and high-performance Li-ion batteries, are examined. In the end, various applications and challenges of flexible batteries in healthcare and various energy storage systems, considering practical implementation, are argued.

PurposeCorrect and well-planned maintenance based on modern global methods directly affects efficiency, quality, direct production costs, reliability and profitability. The selection of an optimal policy for maintenance can be a good solution for industrial units. In fact, by managing constraints such as costs, working hours and human workforce causing sudden equipment failure, production and performance can increase.Design/methodology/approachTherefore, in this research a model was presented to select the best maintenance strategy at Kaghaz Kar Kasra Co of Iran. In this study, it was tried to integrate the two techniques of goal programming and the technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) to prioritize maintenance strategies. First, all factors affecting maintenance were identified, and based on the Best Worst Method (BWM) the degree of their importance was determined.FindingsAfter the evaluation, only 14 criteria in the 4 dimensions of cost, added value, safety and feasibility were selected. The highest points were given to the criteria of equipment cost and depreciation, equipment and personnel performance, equipment installation time and technical feasibility, respectively. In the next stage, using the TOPSIS method the item of maintenance strategy was ranked, and the 3 strategies of preventive maintenance (PM), predictive maintenance (PDM) and corrective maintenance (CM) were chosen. Modeling was performed utilizing a goal programming approach to select the optimal maintenance strategy for 13 devices. All the technical specifications, cost limits and the device time were extracted. After the model was finished and solved the best item for each device was specified.Originality/value1. There is a growing interest on recycling of waste fibres as an alternative to landfill disposal. The aim of the study was to investigate the durability and mechanical properties of waste paper–cement composite panels reinforced with varying kenaf fibre content (FC, 2–10%). The panels produced were evaluated for properties including modulus of rupture (MOR) and apparent modulus of elasticity (MOE). The resistance of the panels was tested in the field for both termite damage and fungi decay for a period of 24 weeks. Accelerated decay test was also performed on selected samples. The results showed that the mean MOR ranged from 3.17 MPa for samples with 10% FC to 4.84 MPa for samples with 8% FC. The mean MOE ranged from 248 MPa for samples with 10% FC to 1298.1 MPa for samples with 8% FC. The Gaussian wiretap channel with noncausal state interference available at the transmitter, which is also called the dirty paper wiretap channel (DP-WTC), has been extensively studied in the literature. Recently, it has been shown that taking actions on the corrupted state interference of the DP-WTC (also called the action-dependent DP-WTC) helps to increase the secrecy capacity of the DP-WTC. Subsequently, it has been shown that channel feedback further increases the secrecy capacity of the action-dependent DP-WTC (AD-DP-WTC), and a sub-optimal feedback scheme is proposed for this feedback model. In this paper, a two-step hybrid scheme and a corresponding new lower bound on the secrecy capacity of the AD-DP-WTC with noiseless feedback are proposed. The proposed new lower bound is shown to be optimal (achieving the secrecy capacity) and tighter than the existing one in the literature for some cases, and the results of this paper are further explained via numerical examples.

Sweden is one of the largest exporters of pulp and paper products in the world. It follows that huge quantities of sludge rich in carbonaceous organic material and containing heavy metals are generated. This paper carried out a comparative environmental analysis of three different technologies, which can be adopted to produce biochar and recover energy from the biosludge, using landfilling as the reference case. These three thermochemical biosludge management systems—using incineration, pyrolysis, and hydrothermal carbonization (HTC)—were modeled using life cycle assessment (LCA). Heat generated in the incineration process (System A) was considered to be for captive consumption within the kraft pulp mills. It was assumed that the biochars—pyrochar and hydrochar—produced from pyrolysis (System B) and HTC (System C), respectively, were added to the forest soils. The LCA results show that all the alternative systems considerably improve the environmental performance of biosludge management, relative to landfilling. For all systems, there are net reductions in greenhouse gas emissions (–0.89, –1.43, and –1.13 tonnes CO 2 -equivalent per tonne dry matter biosludge in Systems A, B, and C, respectively). System B resulted in the lowest potential eutrophication and terrestrial ecotoxicity impacts, whereas System C had the least acidification potential. The results of this analysis show that, from an environmental point of view, biochar soil amendment as an alternative method for handling pulp and paper mill biosludge is preferable to energy recovery. However, an optimal biochar system needs to factor in the social and economic contexts as well.

International audience; An intertwined supply network (ISN) is an entirety of interconnected supply chains (SC) which, in their integrity secure the provision of society and markets with goods and services. The ISNs are open systems with structural dynamics since the firms may exhibit multiple behaviors by changing the buyer-supplier roles in interconnected or even competing SCs. From the positions of resilience, the ISNs as a whole provide services to society (e.g., food service, mobility service or communication service) which are required to ensure a long-term survival. The analysis of survivability at the level of ISN requires a consideration at a large scale as resilience of individual SCs. The recent example of coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak clearly shows the necessity of this new perspective. Our study introduces a new angle in SC resilience research when a resistance to extraordinary disruptions needs to be considered at the scale of viability. We elaborate on the integrity of the ISN and viability. The contribution of our position study lies in a conceptualization of a novel decision-making environment of ISN viability. We illustrate the viability formation through a dynamic game-theoretic modelling of a biological system that resembles the ISN. We discuss some future research areas.

Pollutants emerging from the effluents of paper mills eventually destroy the environment of our ecosystem. To find a proper solution of it, a cost-effective and environmentally benign technique is proposed here to remediate contaminants present in the effluent of paper mill in a sequential steps using advanced oxidation processes including Fenton reaction (FO) (Fe(II)/H2O2), modified Fenton oxidation (MFO) (Fe(II)/Zn(II)/H2O2) and biological flocculation process. A comparison and compilation among these techniques were carried out on the basis of the percentage removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) as well as the observed degradation pattern in gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Results revealed that MFO could remove ≥ 90% of COD at ~ 90 min, whereas FO could eliminate ≥ 80% COD at ~ 120 min. Further, the bioflocculation technique was found to reduce the heavy metal contents such as Fe, Mn, Zn, Co, Cd and Pb by ≥ 60%. In the sequential treatment process, lignin, phenolic and colour contents were also found to be reduced by ~ 84% ~ 97% and ~ 96%, respectively. Again, the bioassay tests were performed to verify the toxicity reduction in the industrial effluent after the application of the sequential treatment process. This study demonstrates that the sequential treatment technique could be an effective alternative for the treatment of paper mill effluent.

The aims of this study were to perform the anaerobic digestion of recycled pulp and paper sludge (RPPS) at laboratory scale, using a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) digester, to determine the methane yield of this type of waste, and to control the physico-chemical parameters to maintain its stability during the experiment. Recycled pulp and paper sludge has an important organic matter with a COD/BOD5 ratio of 1.94, which is easily degradable. The result of anaerobic digestion experiment has given a methane yield coefficient of 159 N mL CH4/g VS, while biodegradability was found around 77% (in VS). The results obtained from the kinetic models studied in this work, mainly the modified Gompertz, first-order, Richards, and Logistic kinetic models show that the difference between the predicted and measured methanogenic potentials was higher in the modified Gompertz kinetic model (0.25–12.94%) than in the Logistic model (0.18–2.69%). The Logistic model showed the best fit for the substrates used. The Logistic, the modified Gompertz, Richards models fitted adequately to cumulative methane production (R2 was 0.9744; 0.9597 and 0.9655, respectively). Specifically, the Logistic model predicted the methane production volume like the experimental within loads added of 2.5 g VS/L.

The recycling of waste paper has been an effective way to achieve the environmental-friendly growth of papermaking industry. Focusing on the mixed-pulping process which has been generally employed, to ensure the required properties of the deinking pulp (DIP) and minimize the purchase cost of waste paper, an intelligent model scheduling the mixing ratio of waste paper was developed in the study. Primarily, driven by the field data of mixing ratio of waste paper and DIP properties, the prediction models of DIP properties were developed by SVM, GA-SVM, and BP-NN algorithms. Subsequently, based on the best prediction model, the scheduling model for the mixing ratio of waste paper was set up by NSGAII algorithm. The experimental results showed that, based on the obtained best BP-NN prediction model of DIP properties, the developed NSGAII scheduling model for the ratio of waste paper could achieve excellent scheduling results under the rigorous constraints and multi-objective. Compared with the previous study, the developed prediction and scheduling models in this study reduced the purchase cost of waste paper by 2.16%, and improved the acceptable proportion of DIP property from 56.07% to 100%.

A pulp and paper industry generates a large amount of industrial solid wastes, which are mostly wet sludge, basically composed by kaolin and pulp. The National Solid Waste Policy in force in Brazil instituted as mandatory to provide the adequate destination of this material and to improve the costs involved in the process. The purpose of this work was to analyze the feasibility of incorporating sludge from the pulp and paper industry in soil-cement blocks using 10% cement and 90% compensated soil. In the composition of this compensated soil, typical from the region where the research was performed, sand and 5%, 10%, and 15% of waste were incorporated in the clay mass. Compressive strength, water absorption and durability tests were carried out with loss of mass. The results indicate that blocks produced with waste incorporation of up to 10% meet the technical requirements set by the main international standards, enabling them to be used in civil construction and thus contributing to reduce the environmental impacts regarding the waste disposal.

We have studied the surface structure of tamper-proof paper with positive and negative watermarks at different scales ‒ from a micrometer to a nanometer level, by using the methods of contact profilometry and atomic force microscopy. Experimental research has confirmed that the structural parameters of the tamper-proof paper's surface differ at regions with and without watermarks. The results of measurements by a contact profilometer have made it possible to trace a correlation between values of the profile's mean arithmetic deviation and the presence of watermarks. It was determined that the value for the profile's largest height does not depend on a measurement region, which could be related to the chaotic arrangement of fibers and particles of the filler in the paper bulk that protrude above the profile's line. By analyzing the value of the profile's mean arithmetic deviation obtained by using a method of atomic-force microscopy, it was found that for regions with negative watermarks it is larger than that for regions with positive watermarks. The dependence of the profile's largest height on measurement region is not clearly observed. This may be due to that the size of the examined region (3,000×3,000 nm) covers only part of the pulp fibers. Thus, the results of our analysis allow us to argue that both methods are suitable for estimating the characteristics of paper's surface, and determine the character of interaction between a given type of paper and printing inks during printing process. In particular, it has been established that the method of profilometry makes it possible to determine parameters of the paper's surface profile, formed in a certain way, while the atomic force microscopy method allows analysis of the morphology of its components, located at the surface (fibers, filler's particles, etc.). The availability of information on the structural properties of paper makes it possible to predict the quality of printing reproduction, specifically clearness of reproduction of thin guilloche lines on watermarks, which is relevant because it prevents flaws in printing products for special purposes.

Paper waste in the mockups design with regular, irregular, and amorphous patterns is a critical problem in digital printing presses. Paper waste reduction directly impacts production costs, generating business and environmental benefits. This problem can be mapped to the two-dimensional irregular bin-packing problem. In this paper, an iterated local search algorithm using a novel neighborhood structure to detect overlaps between amorphous shapes is introduced. This algorithm is used to solve the paper waste problem, modeled as one 2D irregular bin-packing problem. The experimental results show that this approach works efficiently and effectively to detect and correct the overlaps between regular, irregular, and amorphous figures.

The study aims to explore the beneficial use of fly ash and its effectiveness as low cost adsorbent for wastewater treatment of Pulp and paper industry. A comparative study was also carried out for the better colour reduction of industrial effluent using fly ash and commercial activated carbon. Batch mode adsorption experiments were carried out to optimize the different experimental conditions like adsorbent dose, contact time, rotation per minute (RPM) and pH. The treatment showed that the removal efficiency of colour increased to 86 % with the increase in adsorbent dose (0.5 – 10 g), time (30–240 min), RPM (50 - 150) and pH (4–12) of pulp and paper industry wastewater. The removal efficiency of activated carbon was found to be 100 % using 1 g adsorbent dose of commercial grade activated carbon. The Scan Electron Microscope (SEM) results of the fly ash showed that the particles looked like somewhat spherical large particles. It was concluded that though the activated carbon was very efficient adsorbent in comparison to fly ash, the better solution for disposal of solid waste such as fly ash can be good a substitute as the adsorbent for the colour reduction of the paper mill wastewater.

Environmental risks connected with the combustion of paper/cardboard briquettes are still not sufficiently known. This paper aims to bring attention to the risks related to the utilisation of paper briquettes in local boilers and to characterise these risks by means of the identification of organic compounds in deposits from exhaust flues. The identification of the chemical compounds was performed by pyrolysis gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. Paper/cardboard briquettes contain 119 compounds of biogenic origin derived from major biomass components and 53 additives. Additives are used both for improving the properties of paper and in printing inks. By burning the paper briquettes, the same 53 compounds from the additive group were caught in the deposits from the flue gas pathway, occurring in the range of 1–10% of the concentration of individual compounds (additives) contained in the input fuel. Compounds that are very stable during the combustion process have an enrichment factor (EF) > 30, which corresponded to approximately 3% of the additive capture in deposits. The highest values were found for plasticisers (phthalates). Many of the primary organic compounds contained in the input raw material do not decompose during combustion and can have adverse effects on human health.

This study's focus was to develop a potential pathway for recycling of the paper mill sludge compost (PMSC) in brick making. Composting reduces the paper mill sludge (PMS) moisture content considerably and shredding becomes easier. The addition of PMSC leads to an increase of porosities in bricks and makes them lighter, besides delivering energy to the firing process from burning organics. Lighter construction materials help minimize construction outlay by reducing labour and transportation costs and lesser expense on foundation construction. The variability in the experimental data and the brick properties were investigated for two types of soils, typical in the brick industry of India (alluvial and laterite soil), blended with PMSC in five mix ratios (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%). The samples of oven-dried bricks were fired at two different temperatures (850 and 900 °C) in an electrically operated muffle furnace representing typical conditions of a brick kiln. Various properties of bricks were analyzed which included linear shrinkage, bulk density, water absorption and compressive strength. Conclusions were drawn based on these properties. It was found that the addition of PMSC to the alluvial and laterite soil by up to 10% weight yield mechanical properties of fired bricks compliant with the relevant Indian and ASTM codes. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) tests showed that PMSC incorporated fired bricks are safe to use in regular applications as non-load-bearing and infill walls. This study is timely in light of the European Green Deal putting focus on circular economy. Besides, it fulfills the objective of UN sustainable development goals (SDG). © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

The construction industry uses a large amount of natural virgin material for differentgeotechnical structures. In Europe alone, 11 million tonnes of solid waste is generated per year asa result of the production of almost 100 million tonnes of paper. The objective of this research is todevelop a new geotechnical composite from residues of the deinking paper industry and to present itspractical application, e.g., as a backfill material behind a retaining structure. After different mixtureswere tested in a laboratory, the technology was validated by building a pilot retaining wall structurein a landslide region near a railway line. It was confirmed that a composite with 30% deinking sludgeand 70% deinking sludge ash had a high enough strength but experienced some deformations beforefailure. Special attention was paid to the impact of transport, which, due to the time lag betweenthe mixing and installation of the composite, significantly reduced its strength. In this early study, new cement-bonded bi-composite fibreboard (FB) was made from water hyacinth (WaHy) and waste paper (WP). Ordinary Portland cement (PdCe) used as a binder was mixed with other two additives: gypsum plasters (GyPl) and wood ash (WdAh), in defined proportions to form bonding matrices. The WP and WaHy were pre-treated and a linked process was developed for the mixing and consolidation steps. The FBs produced were based on different proportions of composites, binder, and additives mixed. The FBs produced were made from different proportions of composites, binders, and additives. Improved tensile strength was observed for bi-composite FB from WaHy mixed with WP. In general, FBs having densities in the range of 0.50–0.57 g cm−3 were compared favourably with the ASTM and ANSI standards (95%), thus making the FBs a potential alternative for building and construction purposes. More elaborate research with advanced analytical techniques is hereby suggested.

Coater sections are examples of multi-span web transporting systems, with dynamic characteristics related to the sheet properties and control schemes. This paper first describes and analyzes a set of field records of a production 2-coater section paper machine. Then, extending the 1-coater section model developed in a related paper, a precise simulation model of a 2-coater section is implemented. This model is used to evaluate the beginning of the coating process and the effect on the section responses of different bandwidth settings in the tension and speed controllers. Results show agreement with the field records and demonstrate that the developed model is a powerful tool to analyze and understand the behavior of coater sections during both, transient and steady state conditions.

Researchers from academia and the corporate-sector rely on scholarly digital libraries to access articles. Attackers take advantage of innocent users who consider the articles' files safe and thus open PDF-files with little concern. In addition, researchers consider scholarly libraries a reliable, trusted, and untainted corpus of papers. For these reasons, scholarly digital libraries are an attractive-target and inadvertently support the proliferation of cyber-attacks launched via malicious PDF-files. In this study, we present related vulnerabilities and malware distribution approaches that exploit the vulnerabilities of scholarly digital libraries. We evaluated over two-million scholarly papers in the CiteSeerX library and found the library to be contaminated with a surprisingly large number (0.3-2%) of malicious PDF documents (over 55% were crawled from the IPs of US-universities). We developed a two layered detection framework aimed at enhancing the detection of malicious PDF documents, Sec-Lib, which offers a security solution for large digital libraries. Sec-Lib includes a deterministic layer for detecting known malware, and a machine learning based layer for detecting unknown malware. Our evaluation showed that scholarly digital libraries can detect 96.9% of malware with Sec-Lib, while minimizing the number of PDF-files requiring labeling, and thus reducing the manual inspection efforts of security-experts by 98%.

When the inner insulation of oil-impregnated paper bushing breaks down in service, gases decomposed by oil and paper may cause an explosion. The explosion of bushing occurs from time to time because of the lack of an effective monitoring method. In order to provide an effective online monitoring method for the bushing to avoid explosion, this paper presents a method to monitor the PD defect in bushing by measuring the inner pressure of bushing. In this paper, the relationship of variation between characteristic gases content and inner pressure is studied, the effect of inner temperature on inner pressure is analyzed and the method for reducing this effect is also presented, and the monitoring method is proved to be useful by PD tests on a real bushing. The results show that the inner pressure increases obviously due to the generation of characteristic gases by internal discharge in oil-impregnated paper bushing, and the pressure increases with the deterioration of the discharge; although the inner pressure has a great influence on the inner pressure, the influence can be reduced or eliminated greatly by the method of common-mode rejection. According to the results, the internal discharge defect of the oil-impregnated paper bushing can be detected by monitoring the pressure, and the bushing explosion can be avoided.

Sandwich panels with honeycomb filler based on polymer paper "Nomex" is widely used in crucial structures for various purposes. In the process of manufacturing such panels, some factors of the technological process, such as the application of the binder on a honeycomb filler, the temperature modes of drying and polymerization of the applied layer, most significantly affect physical-mechanical characteristics of finished products. A specific factor of production of a honeycomb filler from polymer paper is its multi-stage impregnation with the dressing composition, and then by the binder during the final operations with subsequent drying and heat treatment of the honeycomb units. These operations result into non-uniform heat and mass transfer (migration) of the binder from the central part of the panel to its peripheral end areas. The regularities of this non-uniform heat and mass transfer of the binder along the length of a honeycomb channel were explored. It was shown that these phenomena are conditioned by hydrodynamic motion of the binder, caused by temperature gradient, its density and surface tension coefficient. Based on this, we designed the method for determining the thickness of the binder layer along honeycomb channels at the known (assigned) law of the change in density and surface tension along the length of the cell of a honeycomb filler. The method makes it possible to reduce the non-uniformity of mass transfer by technological means, ensuring the necessary tolerance for physical-mechanical characteristics of honeycomb fillers from polymer paper. The problem of mass transfer enabled deeper revealing the mechanisms of the formation of the non-uniform impregnation layer at the stages of the drying process during the production of a honeycomb filler from polymer paper. Using the obtained mechanisms and technological possibilities of the regulation of characteristics of binders, it is possible to improve the non-uniformity of the layer thickness along the honeycomb channels to the values that ensure the necessary tolerance for physical-mechanical characteristics of a honeycomb filler, Сендвічеві панелі зі стільниковим заповнювачем на основі полімерного паперу «Nomex» широко використовуються у відповідальних конструкціях різноманітного призначення. В результате этих операций имеет место неравномерной тепло- и массоперенос (миграция) связывающего от центральной части панели к периферийным торцевым ее зонам. Исследованы закономерности этого неравномерного тепло- и массопереноса связующего вдоль длина сотового канала. Показано, что эти явления обусловлены гидродинамическим движением связующего, вызванным градиентом температуры, его плотности и коэффициента поверхностного натяжения. На основе этого разработан метод определения толщина слоя связующего вдоль каналов сотов при известном (заданном) законе изменения плотности и поверхностного натяжения вдоль длины ячейки сотового заполнителя. Метод позволяет технологическими средствами снизить неравномерность массопереноса, обеспечив потребный допуск на физико-механические характеристики сотовых заполнителей из полимерной бумаги. Рассмотренная задача массопереноса позволила глубже вскрыть механизмы формирования неравномерного слоя пропитки на этапах процесса сушки при производстве сотового заполнителя из полимерной бумаги. Используя полученные механизмы и технологические возможности регулирования характеристик связующих, возможно улучшить равномерность толщины слоя вдоль каналов сотов до значений, обеспечивающих потребный допуск на физико-механические характеристики сотового заполнителя

Building bricks were produced by utilizing deinking paper mill sludge (DPMS) and alluvial soil by varying percentage of sludge at different firing temperatures. Different mix proportions were prepared with 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% of DPMS incorporation in alluvial soil by weight. Three firing temperatures of 900 °C, 950 °C and 1000 °C were investigated to simulate the typical condition of kiln. The density, firing shrinkage, water absorption, efflorescence, apparent porosity, compressive strength and thermal conductivity of the bricks were determined. The XRD and microstructural analysis of brick specimens were also studied. The optimum firing temperature was 950 °C. The thermal conductivity decreases with increase in percentage of deinking paper mill sludge. It was found that 15% deinking paper mill sludge gives optimum strength at firing temperature of 950 °C. Developed bricks satisfy the requirements of class 10 of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), in terms of efflorescence, compressive strength and water absorption. Thermal conductivity results show that the developed brick was thermally more insulated than the conventional bricks and can be used as alternative to conventional bricks. This will address the issue of waste management through cleaner production and show the ways towards sustainable, economical and energy efficient construction.

Dirty paper coding is an interference pre-cancellation method for known interference at the transmitter and serves as a basic building block in the digital watermarking system. In this letter, we investigate the dirty paper model in the simplest digital communication system, where both the codeword and the interference are binary. For watermark embedment, we derive the relevant coding, the constant coding, and the symmetric relevant coding when the encoder focuses on the binary codeword and interference. The channel capacity is analyzed and the optimal parameter is discussed in the case.

Continuous production of an integrated pulp and paper mill depends on the availability of paper machines. Reliability and maintainability are essential for accomplishing the availability of paper machines. This study investigates the reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM) characteristics of a 120 tonnes per day paper machine from a paper mill in southern region of India. The paper machine is divided into five subsystems for failure analysis. The data was analyzed for trend and serial correlation tests for validating the inference of independent and identical distribution of failure and repair information before each sub system is best fitted to the theoretical probability distributions. Reliability and maintainability of the paper machine has been evaluated at various times which are useful for establishing the preventive maintenance schedules for improving availability of the paper machine. Wire part is found to be more critical subsystem from all points of view and require improvement by 4% and 1.5% in maintainability and availability point of view. This study aims to improve the sales business processes of paper manufacturing industry. While manual systems are still used in the company operations utilized today, this study would enhance the business process with the ERP system approach. This analysis uses methods of exploration, interviews, and literature reviews on business process growth. The findings of this study include a new design of business processes and suggestions for business processes that meet the needs of the paper manufacturing ERP system.

PurposeThis position paper urges a drive towards clarity in the key definitions, terminologies and habits of speech associated with digital engineering and building information modelling (BIM). The ultimate goal of the paper is to facilitate the move towards arriving at an ideal definition for both concepts.Design/methodology/approachThis paper takes the “explanation building” review approach in providing prescriptive guidelines to researchers and industry practitioners. The aim of the review is to draw upon existing studies to identify, describe and find application of principles in a real-world context.FindingsThe paper highlights the definitional challenges surrounding digital engineering and BIM in Australia, to evoke a debate on BIM and digital engineering boundaries, how and why these two concepts may be linked, and how they relate to emerging concepts.Originality/valueThis is the first scholarly attempt to clarify the definition of digital engineering and address the confusion between the concepts of BIM and digital engineering.

[EN] In order to mitigate climate change, reductions of energy consumption are required on heating systems for residential and non-residential buildings. Despite radiant floor heating systems are being widely used due to their high thermal efficiency and comfort, further improvements are necessary to reduce the carbon footprint of the mortars used. This paper studies the use of lime mud, a by-product of the paper industry, as a partial replacement of cement to reduce the environmental impact of the resulting mortar. For that purpose, a reference cement mortar is compared to mortars with 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% of cement replacement by weight. Physical, thermal and mechanical properties showed that up to 20% of cement could be replaced by lime mud while maintaining thermal properties of the mortar. Despite the reduction of the mechanical resistance, mortars with up to 20% of cement replacement fulfilled the requirements of EN 1264-4:2010 standard. Finally, tests on laboratory-made radiant floor heating slabs proved that slabs with reference mortar had a similar stationary behaviour to that of the slabs with mortar containing 20% of lime mud, but the latter reach stationary faster due to the lower thermal inertia of its mortar. In this paper, we report the performance of paper pulp as an innovative viscosity modifying admixture (VMA) for cement composites. Two different levels of fineness were obtained by mechanical milling of the same source of paper pulp. Their effects on viscosity modification, hydration kinetics, autogenous shrinkage, and compressive strength of cement grouts were measured, and their structural integrity at high pH was assessed. A new parameter was proposed to quantify nonlinearity induced by VMAs. Results showed that the hierarchical structure of paper pulp makes it possible to activate bridging flocculation and swelling mechanisms of hydrophile paper pulp fibers at different levels to produce versatile VMAs. The coarser milled paper pulp fibers mainly influences the plastic viscosity. By contrast, the milled paper pulp consisting of ultra-fine fibers significantly modifies both plastic viscosity and dynamic yield stress, induces more nonlinearity in the mixtures, and increases compressive strength of mortars at low dosages.

This paper deals with the valorization of waste paper fly ash (WPFA) as a binder for soil stabilization. The mineralogical characterization shows the presence of free lime, as well as some non-reactive and cementitious phases. The hydration of lime is an expansive reaction and can be problematic in soil stabilization. Therefore, to study its effect on stabilized soil, an in-house experimental set-up is proposed to measure the possible expansion. Furthermore, to study the effect of water reduction and delay time on strength, unconfined compressive strength with different mixes is conducted. The obtained results showed that using WPFA causes expansion in stabilized soil, but a delay time of 30 min, after mixing the material with water and then compacting it, can decrease the expansion. Additionally, decreasing the water content by a point of Proctor can be essential for improving the strength in soil samples, even reaching the same strength values as control samples cured at 7 days. Finally, all the results obtained in this study have shown that WPFA is a suitable material for use as a binder for soil stabilization while reducing its optimum water content, adding a proper delay time, and taking into consideration WPFA&rsquo, s expansive behavior at the moment of its use.

The development and production of new materials requires advanced analytical characterisation to explain the relation between the physico-chemical structure of the material and its properties. Highly integrated microelectronic structure analysis of surfaces with laser beams and X-ray fluorescence aided devices are found to be helpful for providing important information, including the interrelationships between physical, chemical, mechanical and durability characteristics of the new developed products. In most instances no single technique provides all the needed information and hence simultaneous application of several techniques becomes necessary. This study was aimed for hydration analysis, characterization and evaluation of a new novel non-Portland binder (NPB) with waste paper sludge ash (PSA) using FTIR and TG/DTA. The progressive formation of hydration products within the non-Portland binder was identified and their microstructural characteristics were analysed. The stable and non-expansive nature of secondary ettringite formation was also identified after a period of 365 days curing.

This review paper encompasses the inclusive approach of lime sludge valorization in construction materials. Research studies based on cement and aggregate replacement by lime sludge concludes that 10–30% lime sludge is gainfully utilized in sustainable concrete and mortar. Additional prospect for lime sludge application in construction material is the production of cement and ceramics. Significant use of lime sludge in combination with supplementary cementitious materials such as silica fume, nanosilica and fly ash is recommended for the production of cement components and ceramics. The recommendations are also suggested in accordance with the outcome of the study.

The objective of this paper is to study the deterioration of impregnated kraft papers immersed in dielectric liquids under the chemical stress conditions by furan analysis according to ASTM D5837 and IEC 61198. Mineral oil and natural ester (FR3) were liquid used in this study. Kraft paper samples, 3 pieces per each case study, are prepared in rectangle shape with 25.4 ± 0.5 millimeters (1.00 ± 0.02 inches) wide and approximately 254 millimeters (10.0 inches) long according to the ASTM D828 standard. The paper and liquid insulation are heated to dehydrate at 80 °C for 12 hours with 200 mbar pressure, and then they are filled in 200 milliliter bottles and heated with 5 different temperatures being 60 °C, 80 °C, 100 °C, 120 °C and 140 °C respectively. In the case of 120 °C and 140 °C are only conducted with FR3 due to its thermal characteristics. After that, 98% concentration of acetic acid of 2 quantities, 0.04 and 0.08 milliliters, and oxygen (O2) at 1 psi for 1,200 ml, are used for the chemical aging process for 9 days of the test samples before being tested to find furanic compounds. According to the test result, it can be concluded that all 4 factors, temperature, acetic volume, oxygen and moisture, effect on generated furanic compounds of aging paper insulation.

Paper sludge is the water treatment waste, which produced during paper production. Paper sludge (PS) waste utilization is the common problem in the EU and internationally. According to authors Frias et al. paper sludge is the main waste in the paper processing factories, the percentage reach 35% of product volume. According to the waste management directive No. 2008/98/EC, paper sludge waste should not be utilised in landfills. Such legislation generates the motivation of this study. This study deals with paper sludge as sound absorbing material. In this paper panels made of paper sludge is studied. Sound absorption coefficient of the panels predicted with Horoshenkov and Swift acoustic model for granular media. In many of machine parts and structural components, materials surface would be worked. In this study, residual stresses on the surfaces were measured by X-ray diffraction method, and effects of surface working on the residual stresses were examined. In case of lathe machining of type 304 stainless steel bar, the residual stresses in circumferential directions are tensile, and those in axial directions are almost compressive. Highly tensile residual stresses in the circumferential directions were improved by emery paper polishing. 10 to 20 times of polishing changes high tensile residual stresses to compressive residual stresses. In the case of shot peening on a type 304 stainless steel plate, the compressive residual stress inside is several hundred MPa lower than that on the surface. By applying the emery paper polishing to the shot peened surface 10 or 20 times, the residual stress on the surface is improved to &minus, 700 MPa. While fatigue strength at 288 &deg, C in the air of the shot peened material is 30 MPa higher than solution heat treated and electro-polished material, the fatigue strength of the shot peened and followed by emery paper polished material is 60 MPa higher. Thus, the emery paper polishing is simple and a very effective process for improvement of the residual stresses.

Due to the high demand of paper and related items, pulp and paper industry is flourishing day by day. With increased production, come the hazards associated with the toxic elements present in the effluents. Various microorganisms are currently employed in the remediation of these toxic effluents. In addition, various techniques like ozonation, electrocoagulation, UV treatment, Fenton's reagent, and photo-Fenton based techniques are used in advanced oxidation processes to reduce these toxins from effluents. This review highlights various above mentioned advanced techniques and innovative processes along with the biological remediation of these toxic effluents with the help of some potential microbial consortia or their combinatory effects. Moreover, the present review will also disclose the ideas on utilizing the tools of metabolic engineering, systems biology, and artificial intelligence towards microbial engineering for relatively better bioremediation processes. In the future, these techniques might be helpful in increasing the capability of microbial consortia towards detoxification of effluents to make them environmentally safe. Finally, this review gives well-synchronized approaches to get more insights into these innovative methodologies and techniques and their use for various industrial applications.

Antibiotic resistance (AR) is becoming a worldwide threat due to the increasing occurrence of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic bacterial strains. There is a general consensus about the potential implications of the use of antibiotics in livestock on the onset of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB), mainly through meat consumption. However, the ever-increasing use of reclaimed wastewater (RWW) in agriculture may also contribute significantly to the non-accounted exposure to antibiotics, ARB, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This position paper aims at evaluating the current knowledge concerning the occurrence of antibiotics, ARBs, and ARGs in edible parts of different common crops irrigated with RWW. Madagascar undergoes, like all countries in the world, the effects of climate change. in fact, since the last 5 years, in the coastal regions and the basins, the temperature has raised from 2 to 2.5 ° and varies between 34 to 36 ° in the shadow during the rainy season and on the high hills, the temperature diminishes from 2 to 2.5 ° during the dry period and varies from 4 ° to 8 °. However, the structure of lodging of 60% of the people are not adapted to this temperature change. Particularly, in the coastal regions, the walls of the houses are made of sheet iron. The inside of these houses is very hot when the weather is hot and very cold when it is cold. The inhabitants can’t afford the houses made in bricks or breeze block and the natural sources of aggregates are in the process of exhaustion. In the other part, we have seen that tons of paper are ready to be burned at the administrative services (public treasury, public financing, universities, ...) and the newspaper publishers. So, it becomes a must to find another way to the construction materials, justifying in that case our research axis. This study aims at the developing of construction material based on recycled paper, binder and aggregate. It deals of picking up or gathering all waste of papers and outdates newspapers and transforming them into brick for building constructions. What’s more, papers have prominent thermal insulating properties. Our work is focused on the study of variants on the different manufacturing processes, the choice of binder, the preparation of the specimens with different binders and different dosages, the mechanical compression tests for different binders, the evaluation of thermal conductivity for different binders and the numerical simulation of the thermo mechanical behavior of samples. The result is a lightweight brick with good thermal insulation. Tests have also made it possible to declare that the material has acceptable mechanical properties : the compressive strength is 1.56 [N/mm2], higher than the value prescribed by the standard for lightweight concrete blocks for construction of 1.1 [N/mm2], the value of thermal conductivity is 0.114 [W/mK], ten times less conductive heat than concrete and it can replace glass wool for a double its thickness. The specific weight is 57.5 [kg/m2].The practical results were confirmed by finite element simulations.

In the present review, the suitability of adsorption process using low cost adsorbent for the treatment of pulp and paper mill effluent has been discussed. It is clear that adsorption processes are appropriate for the removal of recalcitrant compounds such as surfactants and pesticides, among others biodegradable or non-biodegradable compound present in pulp and paper mills effluents. The importance of the adsorption is to improvement of the removal of various physico- chemical (biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), colour, suspended solids, lignin), heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Fe, Zn, Ni and Mn etc) organochlorine compounds, all recalcitrant pollutant, reduce toxicity, enhance colour removal by using different cost effective adsorbents. The effective use of the different adsorbents developed from different adsorbent media such as activated carbon, agriculture by product and industrial wastes and sludge as adsorbents for the removal of different pollutants from the various processes and operations of pulp and paper mill as potential alternatives to different treatment process and received widespread attention. Adsorption necessity is a novel treatment option to improve the efficiency of removal within the discharge limits of wastewaters into the receiving bodies without causing any damage of the environment. However, still there is a need to find out the practical usefulness of such low cost adsorbent at industrial scale with the special reference to metals.
