Purpose: The paper aims to present key insights for achieving a sustainable competitive advantage from implementing data analytics solutions and artificial intelligence (AI). Design/methodology/approach: This conceptual paper builds on prior empirical and conceptual research, and it offers anecdotal evidence from a best-practice case study of Liverpool Football Club. Findings: Beyond the well-known companies in profiting from AI, such as Amazon, this paper presents a surprising best-practice example for achieving a competitive advantage from combining data analytics and AI with human expertise. Liverpool Football Club is a leading soccer club from England, and it has experienced a major revival in terms of sporting success and financial performance in recent years. The club's emphasis on data analytics and AI only contributed to this impressive evolution when it was complemented with the emotional intelligence and people skills of its present manager Juergen Klopp. Along with new conceptual arguments, this example of integrated intelligence offers important insights for managers and executives in companies from many industries – far beyond sports management. Originality/value: The conceptual arguments and case example illustrate that the competitive benefits of implementing standardized AI solutions in an isolated way will often be relatively limited. Many AI solutions will be standardized in the near future, and they may easily be applied by many firms. Thus, even those companies that are considered as AI pioneers may not be able to sustain their competitive advantage unless they develop an integrated intelligence architecture, which combines human and AI. This integration of data analytics and AI with the human intelligence and expertise of a firm's employees offers the basis for a sustainable advantage because it is difficult to match for competitors. This paper examines approaches to innovation as theoretical background to systems development life cycle (SDLC) practices employed during open source software development using MOODLE to implement a new virtual learning environment (VLE) for an e-learning project at the University of East London (UEL). The School of Computing, Information Technology and Engineering (CITE) and UELconnect, UEL's distance learning arm, have worked together to develop and implement the new VLE. The paper argues that the emerging Adaptive Innovation Approach, when used as a broad SDLC framework and inclusive of the respective work done by Eric von Hippel on Distributed Innovation and Henry Chesbrough on Open Innovation, can support a practitioner-oriented and a user-centred SDLC to better account for new cultural necessities and new economic realities dominating our dynamic global era. The paper takes a closer look at the development of UEL's MOODLE-based VLE for its adaptive innovation qualities and offers various lessons from the validation of a Fully Online MSc Business Information Technology (BIT) that was developed alongside with the VLE. Finally, the paper offers some additional observations from testing MOODLE's eMail Block installed in the new VLE to accommodate internal communication for the newly validated MSc. This paper sets out to report upon the findings of a case study of an 'innovative' school in England. Specifically, the research focusses upon the way in which the school has engaged with the neoliberal policy context in which increased autonomy and diversification of provision is promoted in England as a driver of standards. Using Bourdieu's conceptualisation of symbolic capital, the findings suggest that within this autonomous system, 'innovative' localised policy-making can arguably misrecognise the role such 'innovation' plays in helping to maintain structures, which may contribute to ensuring the field, and its competitive nature, is protected rather than challenged. Purpose - The purpose of this paper was to examine the effects of size, strategic orientation and market orientation on innovation. Design/methodology/approach - A mail survey was conducted on a random sample of 60 South Yorkshire non-high-tech small, medium-sized manufacturing enterprises. A hypothesised model, stating company size, strategic and market orientation affect innovation was tested using multiple linear regression analysis. Findings - The results confirm customer orientation has a positive effect on innovation at product, process and organisational level. While it was found size and strategic orientation have an effect on process innovation. Size also has an impact on strategic orientation and strategic orientation on market orientation. Overall, medium-sized firms are prospectors and small firms, defenders. Prospectors are customer focused while defenders are competitors and environmental/technology-led. Process innovation is important to defenders. The findings reiterate that customers are the drivers for organisational innovation; while firms' strategic orientation determines their market orientation. Originality/value - This paper addresses a gap in the literature by that showing size, strategic orientation and market orientation are interrelated and, that customer orientation has a direct impact on innovation the most. This paper reviews the concept and practice of “Healthy Working Centres” within the context of new forms of work organisation. New forms of work organisation can be within enterprises, or it can take the form of collaborative engagement in new working practices among enterprises. The paper explores what constitutes a Healthy Working Centre, and identifies what would differentiate such centres from other existing facilities in the South East of England. It concludes that Healthy Working Centres are potentially powerful new forms of work organisation, which would develop social capital and alliances among organisations. In time, they could create innovation systems and regional developmental coalitions. Participative action research interventions during the feasibility study in a number of sub-regional networks illustrate that centres would have to meet the needs of the community using them, and they would therefore have to develop specific norms, structures and communication conventions. The success of the Healthy Working Centre concept is dependent upon a culture of co-operation and collaboration in the region, which is at present largely absent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The emerging interest in creativity and innovation subjects have increased attention to the exploration of their relationship with organization culture, entrepreneurship, leadership, and education. The current bibliometric study was employed to identify and synthesize the results from studies exploring domains of creativity and innovation. Authors analyzed the papers published in highly ranked and cited by the journals which indexed and ranked in Web of Science Core Collection, in the period of 2010 to 2019. Major findings in this study include: (a) the number for journals published in 2010 significantly increased by 2019; (b) there are three leading countries publishing research in the creativity and innovation field, including the USA, PR China and England; (c) there are three prominent fields by subject category, including the management and business, leading field with 58.92% articles, a psychological area with 15.14% articles, and engineering and environmental studies 8.65% articles; (d) Creativity and Innovation Management Journal is leading in publishing studies on creativity and innovations (11 records, 6% of published studies). Although findings were dispersed widely in sub-contexts, the review suggests that there are strong relationships between creativity and innovations, along with concepts and environment, culture, organizational characteristics, individual features, entrepreneurship, and leadership. This paper puts forth a theory of the Industrial Revolution whereby an economy transitions from Malthusian stagnation to modern economic growth as firms implement cost-reducing production technologies. This take-off of industry occurs once the market reaches a critical size. The mechanism by which market size affects process innovation relies on two overlooked facts pre-dating England's Industrial Revolution: the expansion in the variety of consumer goods and the increase in firm size. We demonstrate this mechanism in a dynamic general equilibrium model calibrated to England's long-run development, and explore how various factors affected the timing of its industrialization. Common sense would seem to indicate that the best practice learning placements for UK student social workers are those in mainstream state-regulated agencies where they are supervised, taught and assessed by experienced professionals. In this paper, the assumptions on which ‘common sense’ is based are critically examined and an alternative framework proposed for assessing the quality of practice learning environments. State-regulated agencies in the UK comprise a diversity of settings, structures, activities and professional groupings and it is not uncommon for students to be supervised by unqualified staff or professions other than social work. This tradition of students representing the social work profession resonates with some international practices and has the potential to inform both educational and professional practice development. Growing global and economic pressures mean that social workers need to be prepared to respond to rapidly changing circumstances. The model proposed allows for this to be possible both within and outside mainstream practice settings. Drawing on wider work-based learning literature, a generative and constructive approach is proposed for evaluating increasingly diverse social work practice learning opportunities and their potential contribution to professional practice. Background: Over a decade ago, the Hill report argued that a shift in vision was required to change the perception of National Health Service (NHS) Library and Knowledge Services (LKS) in England from "book repositories" to essential services that underpin clinical decision-making by patients, carers, and health care professionals. Health Education England's Knowledge for Healthcare: A Development Framework for Library and Knowledge Services in England 2015-2020 advocates embedding librarians within clinical and management teams in order to provide access to high-quality evidence at the point of need. Case Presentation: In April 2019, Royal Papworth Hospital relocated twelve miles from its historic village location in Papworth Everard to its new state-of-the-art hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The design for this new hospital did not accommodate a traditional library space and therefore necessitated a transformation of the LKS. The organization opted to embed the LKS staff into the clinical setting and relegate 80% of the print collection to off-site storage. This project and its associated steps are presented as an example of health care library transformation. Conclusion: Embedding the LKS team in the clinical setting, engaging in proactive outreach activity, and improving our marketing led to a 44% increase in literature searches requested compared to the same eleven-month period in the previous year. A 40% decrease in our print book loans indicates additional barriers to using a click-and-collect service and the need for greater investment in our e-book provision. However, early outcomes for our best-fit service transformation are positive. Having an open, dual mindset has enabled the service to embrace change and maximize emerging opportunities to collaborate with clinical staff on new projects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Open University has gained considerable experience in the use of computer-mediated communication (CMC) and similar techniques in distance education. The new media offer a wide range of opportunities for extending the educational experience of learners. In one large-scale application of CMC, involving some 3500 students, students became enthusiastic users of the medium, and regarded it as a major source of motivation. However, it is not clear what other academic benefits they gained from the activity. The strengths and weaknesses of electronic communication as an educational medium and the resulting consequences for universities are examined. It seems clear that while the short-term effects of the medium are relatively small, in the longer term they may entirely reshape the conception of a university. The role of the academic will change, and new forms of literacy will need to be developed. 'Mastery' is central to current policy in mathematics education in England, influenced by East Asian success in transnational assessments. We scrutinise the prospects for mastery pedagogies to improve pupil attainment in English primary schools. The Mathematics Teacher Exchange (MTE)—an element of the mastery innovation—involves teachers visiting Shanghai and then hosting Shanghai teachers in their schools. Informed by programme evaluation, core component practices are analysed, which were implemented by schools belonging to the first cohort of MTE schools. These consist of: varied and interactive teaching; meaningful and coherent mathematical activity; and full curriculum access for all. These elements are supported, optimally, by collaborative, embedded, and mathematically focused professional development. Details of the implemented pedagogy and forms of professional development are reported. Differences from prevailing practice in primary mathematics in England are highlighted. Evidence is reviewed from quasi-experimental trials, reviews and meta-analyses, and rigorous observational studies of the efficacy of practices similar to the MTE mastery pedagogy components in order to assess the prospects for increases in pupil attainment. The analysis suggests that many of the specific practices, if considered individually, have the potential to improve attainment, though overall policy ambitions may not be realised. Based on the review, component practices are identified for which existing evidence justifies immediate implementation by schools and teachers. This article examines a set of industries including financial investment, fashion, and culture that tend to predominate in certain cities such as New York and London. Using data on business establishments and wages for the United States and Canada, the author shows that these industries exhibit a very high level of spatial concentration and a related high level of wage variation among metropolitan areas. The author proposes that these industries are very cluster dependent because of an inherently rapid pace of product innovation. The implications of this for economic development analysis are considered in the context of cluster and innovation policy. This study examines the knowledge of entrepreneurs on the complex concept of innovation before assessing how they apply this knowledge to increase the propensity to develop new products and services. Within this context, considerable emphasis explores the assertions that knowledge management can enhance the adoption of new technology through collaborative networks. The aim of the study is to build a body of work in the area of innovation and entrepreneurship that spans the divide between theory and practice by empirically harnessing the perspectives of the case study companies on their innovation behavior. The design of this study adopts the characteristics of a case study research which was applied extensively to provide qualitative data. To be included in the study, firms had to be in existence for at least a year, and firms of the same age were avoided. The findings revealed that the concept of innovation is heterogeneous and elusive. Therefore, the study concluded that innovation is a global concept that requires knowledge acquisition through collaborative networks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
