ELECTRONIC information resources ,ONLINE education ,PERIODICALS ,INTERNET in education ,INFORMATION resources - Abstract
This article presents a list of the most important online resources of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). ACM provides a large number of online resources for its members. The article lists the most popular downloads in three categories: refereed journal and conference papers, magazines and survey articles, and online courses. The three tables show the top 10 papers, articles, and courses ranked in July 2004, and then how those top 10 fared over the prior year from July 2004 to July 2003. If one has not requested the online option as part of one's membership and wishes to add it, one can do so from the ACM home page at its web site. The Top 10 magazine and survey articles represent about 3 percent of the downloads in this category. Online courses are available to members as part of the Professional Development Center. These courses are downloaded onto one's computer and typically take about six hours. They feature learning about relational databases and newer programming languages.

CONFERENCES & conventions ,PERIODICALS ,DIGITAL libraries ,COMPUTER systems ,INFORMATION resources management - Abstract
The article presents information on the advantages of using services provided by Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). ACM, IEEE/CS, and USENIX organize conferences and sponsor journals and magazines. ACM shoulders the responsibility for the financial health of a conference, maintains the history of financial transactions, signs contracts with vendors, prints and produces promotional materials, and so forth. The cost of such services is built into the conference budget as administrative fees. This is basically overhead for ACM to pay staff to support conferences. Unlike university-based overheads, which are typically fixed at about 50%, ACM's overhead is based on a sliding scale depending on the size of the conference, but it is closer to 15%. ACM publishes nearly 40 periodicals in addition to sponsoring 140 conferences and workshops each year. Another benefit of ACM sponsorship is that all conference and periodical papers are available via ACM's Digital Library. The DL is one of ACM's crown jewels, and is unquestionably popular and affordable to both individuals and institutions.

The article presents information on the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Council Meeting. The meeting was held on October 22-23, 1975 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Valentin Turchin, a computer scientist and Russian citizen now living in Russia, has been invited by New York-based Columbia University to accept a position in the Mathematics Department of the University. A motion was defeated by the council that it should take no action on the matter of Turchin. The current proposals for a new journal to go to all members, colloquially referred to as Journal for all Members, were reviewed by Fred Harris, chairman of the ad hoc Publications Planning Committee. The proposed Professional Development Seminars Policy has been approved by the council. to encourage continuing education activities of ACM members is the primary purpose of the policy. Renewal of thirty percent of the ACM membership population is scheduled to take place during December and January. Due to some unavoidable logistic problems the distribution of the September issue of Computing Surveys has been delayed.

PERIODICALS ,PUBLISHED articles ,JOURNALISM ,PERIODICAL publishing - Abstract
The article discusses the publication's evolution from February, 1983 to present. ACM originally provided two journals in which contributors could publish research, but by the mid-1970s neither could keep up with the pace of innovation. Efforts to remedy this eliminated both the backlog of articles waiting to be published, and serious technical content. The present "Communications of the ACM" was conceived as a publication that would emphasize news, computing practices, research. Early challenges with getting the content right were surmounted, and the publication today is on a much sounder financial footing.

The article discusses plans for the periodical "Communications of the Association for Computing Machinery" (CACM). By 2005 dissatisfaction with CACM had been felt within the computing community. In 2006 the author was appointed to oversee an overhaul of CACM. Through interacting with computing professionals he learned that there was still strong demand for a printed copy of the journal. Readers also wanted more research content, a livelier editorial page, and better graphic design. In addition to these changes, CACM will present more in-depth coverage of news, and will continue to publish refereed articles.

The article presents information on the publication strategy of the journal "Communications of the ACM (CACM)." When the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) was founded nearly 60 years ago and worked as an organization of academic researchers, for they were the ones building and using computers. In 1980s ACM leaders concluded that practitioners were dissatisfied with CACM and so its mission was changed from a prestigious publication of research into a computing magazine inspired by the journal "American Scientist." The change in its format started in the late 1980s and was completed by the early 1990s. As part of the format change, the CACM advisory board became less active. CACM has been considered as the top publication outlet for the scholars in Management Information Systems. The task force looking for innovative ideas to give CACM a wider recognition includes Fran Allen, Cheri Pancake, Gul Agha, Matt Blaze, Michael Cusumano, Soha Hassoun and Vincent Shen, and it is co-chaired by Stu Feldman and Mary Jane Irwin. They are looking to other publications like "Science," and societies for good ideas and checking which CACM columns have a large following.

This article presents the author's views about the process of refereeing used by the Association for Computing Machinery in its formal publications. According to the author, the main purpose of refereeing is to make sure that the technical material which is to be published is indeed worthy of such publication. Another important part of the refereeing process is to see that the paper is understandable by intended readers. The criteria for refereeing are generally specified by the editors, and these specifications should be relevant to the purpose of each publication.

MEMBERSHIP in associations, institutions, etc. ,SCHOLARLY method ,COMPUTER science ,PERIODICALS - Abstract
This article reports on recent developments related to the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). In May 1980, ACM Members will elect officers and members of Council. The ACM Bylaws require the Nominating Committee to: submit its report by December 5, 1979; and nominate at least two persons for each office. There is a large number of candidates to be found by December 5 and it is important that they be identified as early as possible. The number and variety of ACM'S activities have been growing for many years and it is likely that this trend will accelerate in years to come. It is therefore most important that the membership elect dedicated and competent people. The ACM Detroit Chapter recently presented scholarship awards to seven outstanding computer science students. Besides individual certificates, the winners received financial awards totaling $5000. Michael Garey has been appointed the new Editor-in-Chief of the "Journal for the Association for Computing Machinery," it was announced by M. Stuart Lynn, chairman of the ACM Publications Board.
