Gender differences in science and engineering (S&E) have been studied in various countries. Most of these studies find that women are underrepresented in the S&E workforce and publish less than their male peers. The factors that contribute to gender differences in experience and performance in S&E careers can vary from one country to another, yet they remain underexplored. This paper is among the first to systematically compare gender differences in the publication productivity of academic scientists and engineers with doctoral degrees in the U.S. and China. Findings from negative binomial regressions show that women publish less than their male counterparts in science but not in engineering in the U.S. In China, women do not differ from men in publication productivity in science but publish more than their male counterparts in engineering. In addition, we find that some background variables affect men's and women's publication productivity differently. The findings are analyzed in the context of the different cultures of the two fields (science vs. engineering) and of the two countries (the U.S. and China). Land subsidence is a common geological hazard. The long-term accumulation of land subsidence in Shanghai has caused economic loss to the city. Since the 1990s, the engineering structures have become a new cause of land subsidence. Many factors affect the process of land subsidence. Although such a process cannot be explicitly expressed by a mathematical formula, it is not a “black box” whose internal structure, parameters, and characteristics are unknown. Therefore, the grey theory can be applied to the prediction of land subsidence and provides useful information for the control of land subsidence. In this paper, a grey model (GM) GM (1, 1) with unequal time-intervals was used to predict the subsidence of a high-rise building in the Lujiazui area of Shanghai, and the results were compared with the monitored data. The prediction of subsidence was also corroborated by laboratory tests and the results were compared with measured data and the predicted data by the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). True 3D solid modeling of complex geologic bodies still face many difficulties. In this paper, a new technique of true 3D solid modeling is addressed, which incorporates the application of 2D&3D interactive aided section technology to revise scatter point aggregates, the means of two-body 3D data structure (improved B-rep 3D solid data structure) to organize data and the usage of vector shear technology for modeling. Based on such techniques, a true 3D solid model of a large hydropower engineering project in southern China was built to serve as intuitive platform for engineering survey, design, and construction. In hydrosystem engineering design and analysis, temporal pattern for rainfall events of interest is often required. In this paper, statistical cluster analysis of dimensionless rainfall pattern is applied to identify representative temporal rainfall patterns typically occurred in Hong Kong Territory. For purpose of selecting an appropriate rainfall pattern in engineering applications, factors affecting the occurrence of different rainfall patterns are examined by statistical contingency tables analysis through which the inter-dependence of the occurrence frequency of rainfall patterns with respect to geographical location, rainfall duration and depth, and seasonality is investigated. Furthermore, due to inherent variability of rainfall mass curves or hyetographs within each classified rainfall pattern, a practical procedure to probabilistically generate plausible rainfall patterns is described. The procedure preserves the inherent stochastic features of random dimensionless rainfall hyetograph ordinates, which in general are correlated non-normal multivariate compositional variables. This article assumes that a profession is a number of individuals in the same occupation voluntarily organized to earn a living by openly serving a moral ideal in a morally-permissible way (a discipline) beyond what law, market, morality, and public opinion would otherwise require. Our question is whether the concept of profession (so defined) may have a far wider range than the term, so that, for example, pointing out that a certain language lacks a word for 'profession' in our sense, is not enough to show that those who speak the language also lack the concept. We believe the survey of 71 Chinese reported here begins to answer that question. This article has four parts. The first describes who was interviewed, how, when, and so on. The second describes some important features of the survey's questions, explaining how the questions track the concept of profession. The third part reports and interprets the results relevant to our question. The forth defends a tentative answer to the question with which we began-arguing the survey supports the claim that China has a profession of engineering. This article should serve as a 'proof of concept', that is, a model for similar studies around the world both of engineering and of other occupations thought to be professions. The waste rock heap is a kind of potential uranium (U) pollution source in U mining and metallurgy areas. In this study, we discussed the distribution characteristics of U in the soil (sludge) around a waste rock heap of a granite-type U mine in southern China, and the aim was to indicate U releasing behavior from the pollution source from the perspective of the sink. This work proves that U carried by colloidal solution can be transported for a longer distance. Thus, in the follow-up regulation engineering for U waste rock heap to inhibit U from entering the environment, it should be concerned on not only the diffusion of U in the form of debris, but especially the migration of U as colloidal solution. A landslide always results from a progressive process of slope deformation. In recent years, an increasing number of slope instabilities have occurred with regard to human engineering activities such as hydropower or traffic construction in mountainous area, which cause even greater casualties and economic loss compared with the natural hazards. The development of such earth surface process may hold long period with mechanisms still not fully understood. Using monitoring technology is an effective and intuitive approach to assist analyzing the slope deformation process and their driving factors. This study presents an engineering slope excavated during the construction of Changheba Hydropower Station, which is located in the upper reaches of Dadu River, Sichuan Province, southwest China. The engineering slope experienced and featured a five-year continuous deformation which caused continuous high risks to the engineering activities. We conducted in-depth analysis for such a long-term deformation process based on ground and subsurface monitoring data, collected successive data with a series of monitoring equipment such as automated total station, borehole inclinometers and other auxiliary apparatus, and identified the deformation process based on the comprehensive analysis of monitoring data as well as field investigation. After analyzing the effects of engineering activities and natural factors on the continuous deformation, we found that the overburden strata provided deformable mass while the excavation-produced steep terrain initiated the slope deformation in limit equilibrium state over a long period of time; afterwards, the intense rainwater accelerated slope deformation in the rainy season. Various geological processes (mineral composition, structure, tectonics, weathering, etc.) affect the physical–mechanical properties of rock. Petrological and engineering geological characteristics of paleoweathered rock (PWR) from the K1/J2 contact zone are described in detail via field investigation and experimental testing. This PWR exhibits mainly sandy grains and mud structures, layered and massive strata, and calcareous and argillaceous cements; fissures are developed and often filled with argillaceous and detrital materials; nine minerals and seven oxides are present, and quartz is present in each sample. Long-term weathering results in a consistent bulk density and high total porosity due to the transformation of primary minerals into secondary clay minerals, forming PWR that undergoes argillization in water. The axial point load strength (PLS) is the largest among the tested PLSs, followed by the diametral PLS, and the irregular PLS. The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) varies widely, but the results are reliable. The mineralogical, physical and mechanical properties of the PWR are compared to predict one parameter from another and study their mutual influence. The PLS and UCS of the PWR are negatively correlated with the elastic mineral group (EMG) content, weathering alteration indexes, water content, and total porosity and positively correlated with the quartz content, brittle mineral group (BMG) content, bulk density, real density, and longitudinal wave velocity. The UCS and the PLS, axial (diametral) PLS and irregular PLS are positively correlated. These results provide a theoretical basis for physical and mechanical property prediction of PWR masses and rapid estimation of UCS in engineering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gougerotin is a peptidyl nucleoside antibiotic produced by Streptomyces graminearus. It is a specific inhibitor of protein synthesis and exhibits a broad spectrum of biological activities. Generation of an overproducing strain is crucial for the scale-up production of gougerotin. In this study, the natural and engineered gougerotin gene clusters were reassembled into an integrative plasmid by λ-red-mediated recombination technology combined with classic cloning methods. The resulting plasmids pGOU and pGOUe were introduced into S. graminearus to obtain recombinant strains Sgr-GOU and Sgr-GOUe, respectively. Compared with the wild-type strain, Sgr-GOU led to a maximum 1.3-fold increase in gougerotin production, while Sgr-GOUe resulted in a maximum 2.1-fold increase in gougerotin production. To further increase the yield of gougerotin, the effect of different precursors on its production was investigated. All precursors, including cytosine, serine, and glycine, had stimulatory effect on gougerotin production. The maximum gougerotin yield was achieved with Sgr-GOUe in the presence of glycine, and it was approximately 2.5-fold higher than that of the wild-type strain.
