The paper published by Nath et al. (Urban Ecosystems 25:1279–1295, 2022) analyzes the influence of different ecological factors and covariates on House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) abundance but criticizes previous research without explaining in depth the scientific reasons for it and reaches conclusions not supported by the authors' own data nor by existing knowledge and scientific evidence. They state that studies on the impacts of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) on birds outside laboratory conditions carried out in the past did not consider other ecological factors that could also influence the life history needs of the species. However, precisely the opposite is true; the studies carried out so far, taking into account most of the possible factors to consider, including urbanization, have not been able to solve the enigma of the House Sparrow decline in many of the world's cities. Thus, it is necessary to propose new possible causes not considered so far. Among the few that remain to be tested is the electromagnetic radiation hypothesis, which was proposed by two independent research teams in two different countries. This paper is a reply of the work developed by Nath et al. (Urban Ecosystems 25:1279–1295, 2022) that highlight their inconclusive results and methodological flaws due to the correlation observed between radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) and urbanization, complement their results showing negative correlations when testing House Sparrow abundance with electromagnetic radiation levels correcting for the percentage of builtup, and clarify some statements and misconceptions (importance of non-thermal effects). The aim of this study, which covers the period from 1991 to 2017, is to analyze the relationships between recovered paper consumption, human development index, urbanization rate, and forest footprint in the framework of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis in the 10 countries that consume the most recovered paper. Considering that wood is the raw material of paper, the study investigates whether the increase in the consumption of recovered paper has a positive effect on the forest footprint. Therefore, unlike other studies, the dependent variable of the EKC model is the forest footprint. The study is original in that it is the first to analyze the effects of recovered paper consumption on environmental degradation in the context of the EKC hypothesis. To analyze the relationships between the variables, we use panel cointegration tests based on AMG and CCE estimators, which allow analysis on both a country and group basis. According to the results, the EKC hypothesis is valid only in the Netherlands. While there is a statistically significant and negative relationship between recovered paper consumption and forest footprint in the Netherlands, there is a statistically significant and negative relationship between urbanization and forest footprint in Italy. Economic and ecological benefits and costs must be considered to measure the net benefit of waste management programs. In addition, to analyze how environmental impacts change over time, ecological footprint and gas emissions during waste generation or disposal should be measured similarly to carbon emissions. This paper comprehends the global research scenario about incorporating cultural components in contemporary urban planning practice. Various urban cultural elements have been analysed under the umbrella of 'Urban Cultural Dynamics' (UCD). This study aims to identify hot spots and explore influential sources through a bibliometric investigation of the evolutionary patterns of cultural dynamics in urban planning research. Data was collected from the Web of Science core collection (1965-2021). The data mining tools VOSviewer, Biblioshiny, KNIME, and WordStat were used to analyse hot topics, keywords, influential journals, core papers, top authors, and cooperation networks of countries and institutions. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is employed in journal analysis. The analysis showed that publications on UCD increased exponentially between 2016 and 2022. Italy (32), China (26), and Spain (18) are the top countries in total publications. Technical universities of Dresden and Munich have the most significant influence on UCD's research, with 103 and 101 total citations, respectively. Landscape and Urban Planning, Journal of Cultural Heritage, and Tourism Geographies are the top three consistently influential journals. The top ten core papers were identified. The keywords and topic analysis charted out the evolution of multidisciplinary UCD research topics. The hotspot analysis revealed the significance of cultural dynamics in sustainable urban development. The results highlighted the need for intercontinental cooperation between developed countries and the third world. The future scope of research on UCD topics is discussed in the conclusion. Most of the current studies on carbon emission reduction have been focusing on the urban and industrial levels, overlooking policy assessment studies on the carbon emissions of construction enterprises in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB). To explore the impact of smart city policy (SCP) on the carbon emissions of construction enterprises, this paper constructs a theoretical framework model for evaluating SCP based on the Political-Economic-Sociocultural-Technological-Environmental-Legal (PESTEL) model and the perspective of the pollution halo hypothesis. In addition, this paper adopts panel data of 110 cities covered by the YREB from 2004 to 2021 and verifies the SCP impact mechanism on the carbon emissions of construction enterprises in the YREB through the difference-in-differences (DID) method, the propensity score matching (PSM) method, and the analysis of mediating effects and moderating effects. The conclusions are as follows: (1) the SCP significantly curbs the carbon emissions of the construction enterprises in the YREB pilot cities; (2) the SCP has a regional qualitative effect on the carbon emissions of the construction enterprises in the YREB and it curbs the carbon emissions of the construction enterprises in the upstream and downstream regions; (3) R&D and FDI are important transmission mechanisms; and (4) new urbanization construction has a positive moderating effect on the carbon emission reduction effect of the SCP on construction enterprises. As a research precedence, this paper reveals for the first time the mechanism of the SCP on the carbon emissions of construction enterprises in the YREB through the lens of the PESTEL model and the pollution halo hypothesis; the paper not only enriches the research related to urban policies but also provides new evidence from Chinese construction enterprises for assessing the impacts of pilot cities. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the volatilization behavior of heavy metals during pyrolysis and combustion of municipal solid waste (MSW) components at different heating rates and temperatures. The waste fractions comprised waste paper (Paper), disposable chopstick (DC), garbage bag (GB), PVC plastic (PVC), and waste tire (Tire). Generally, the release trend of heavy metals from all MSW fractions in rapid-heating combustion was superior to that in low-heating combustion. Due to the different characteristics of MSW fractions, the behavior of heavy metals varied. Cd exhibited higher volatility than the rest of heavy metals. For Paper, DC, and PVC, the vaporization of Cd can reach as high as 75 % at 500 °C in the rapid-heating combustion due to violent combustion, whereas a gradual increase was observed for Tire and GB. Zn and Pb showed a moderate volatilization in rapid-heating combustion, but their volatilities were depressed in slow-heating combustion. During thermal treatment, the additives such as kaolin and calcium can react or adsorb Pb and Zn forming stable metal compounds, thus decreasing their volatilities. The formation of stable compounds can be strengthened in slow-heating combustion. The volatility of Cu was comparatively low in both high and slow-heating combustion partially due to the existence of Al, Si, or Fe in residuals. Generally, in the reducing atmosphere, the volatility of Cd, Pb, and Zn was accelerated for Paper, DC, GB, and Tire due to the formation of elemental metal vapor. TG analysis also showed the reduction of metal oxides by chars forming elemental metal vapor. CuS was the dominant Cu species in reducing atmosphere below 900 °C, which was responsible for the low volatility of Cu. The addition of PVC in wastes may enhance the release of heavy metals, while GB and Tire may play an opposite effect. In controlling heavy metal emission, aluminosilicate- and calcium-based sorbents can be co-treated with fuels. Moreover, pyrolysis can be a better choice for treatment of solid waster in terms of controlling heavy metals. PVC and Tire should be separated and treated individually due to high possibility of heavy metal emission. This information may then serve as a guideline for the design of the subsequent gas cleaning plant, necessary to reduce the final emissions to the atmosphere to an acceptable level. The consequences of sustainable and greener mobility have been demonstrated previous year by the pandemic situation. One significant benefit was to reduce the level of noise, dust and air pollution from the traffic in many European countries due to reduced mobility most of the population. Positive phenomena was also recorded in the Slovak Republic. Today's urban mobility offers new, more sustainable ways of transport for residents, especially app-based and shared-ride services, which have become increasingly widespread and very popular. Undoubtedly offer a level of convenience unseen before in the urban mobility systems throughout the world. Although new forms of transport are developed in most Slovak cities, their operation is not very rational and therefore individual car transport still dominates at the expense of sustainable ways of transport. In our paper, we analyze the traffic situation in the city of Nitra, as the large number of trips in the course of the peak-hours often results in severe traffic congestion. Multimodality is one of the solutions to improve the current traffic situation, as it allows urban residents to choose from a range of alternative travel options. The main aim of this paper is to determinate the possibilities of multimodal urban mobility in the city of Nitra in addition to analyze how the potential change in the variability of choice of means of transport affects the urban mobility behaviour. In order to meet stated objectives, a marketing research was conducted. The research findings point to the fact that the current urban infrastructure and overall possibilities are limited, the consequence of which is that travel behaviour of citizens does not demonstrate the features of sustainable urban mobility. The Ming Great Wall Military Defense System is the most complete ancient military cultural heritage in China, which is of great significance to the study of China's ancient military defense mechanism and pattern. Military settlement is an important carrier of this mechanism. The estimation and in-depth understanding of its value can further excavate the profound connotation of the military defense system and the Great Wall spatial pattern in the Ming Dynasty. This paper adopts the AHP-CRITIC weighting approach to determine the weights of the historical value, scientific value, social value, cultural value and artistic value of the settlement heritage, so as to construct the value evaluation model of military settlements, and takes 34 Ming Great Wall military settlements in the Liaoxi Corridor as an example for evaluation. The results of the evaluation identified the priority settlements for conservation and development, and also explored their relationship with historical status, urbanization processes and official policies. The evaluation model constructed in this paper has a certain universality, and can also be followed in the evaluation of other military settlements in the Ming Great Wall Defense System, so as to obtain the overall cognition of the settlement system. Labor mobility is an inherent component of economic development and labor market changes. With globalization and urbanization, labor mobility is on the rise in many developing countries, and it is of great significance to study the economic outcomes and poverty alleviation effects of this phenomenon. This paper explores the impact of labor mobility on the wages of rural migrants when they move out with their fellow townsmen (folks from the same county). The study uses the China Migrants Dynamic Survey (CMDS) data and applies the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method for empirical analysis. Our results suggest that labor mobility with fellow townsmen significantly increases the wages of rural migrants. The paper shows two promotion mechanisms: mobility with fellow townsmen affects the wages of rural migrants by improving their ability to search for information and negotiate wages. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that mobility with fellow townsmen significantly increases the wages of rural migrants engaged in producer service, consumer service, blue-collar occupations, and working in state-owned and private enterprises. Furthermore, it has a more positive impact on the wages of older rural migrants from an intergenerational perspective. Interestingly, rural migrants may "give up" part of their wages to care for their families when they move with their spouses, parents, or children. Therefore, the government needs to take effective policy measures to promote the employment service system and improve the labor rights and interests protection mechanism for rural migrants. The creation of the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) in the mid-2000s provided a new data format for cities to organize and share digital information on their public transport systems. GTFS feeds store geolocated data on public transport networks, including information on routes, stops, timetables, and service levels. The GTFS standard is now widely adopted by thousands of transport authorities and a wide variety of software applications for different purposes, including trip planning, timetable creation and accessibility analysis. Yet, there is still a lack of tools to parse GTFS data when the objective is to analyze the complex spatial and temporal patterns of public transport systems. This paper presents {gtfs2gps}, a new general-purpose computational tool to easily process static GTFS data that allows one to analyze the space–time trajectories of public transport vehicles at fine spatial and temporal resolutions. {gtfs2gps} is an open-source R package that employs parallel computing to convert GTFS feeds from relational text files into a trajectory data table, similar to GPS records, with the timestamps of vehicles in every trip. This paper explains the package functionalities and demonstrates how {gtfs2gps} can be used to articulate key concepts in time geography to explore and visualize the spatial and temporal patterns of public transport networks. We also present a case study looking at how {gtfs2gps} can be used to examine socioeconomic and spatial–temporal inequalities in access to public transport, providing key information to monitor cities' progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals. The paper is accompanied by a computational notebook in R Markdown to support reproducibility of the results in this paper and to replicate the analysis for other contexts where GTFS data are available. Urbanization brings benefits and burdens to both humans and nature. Cities are key systems for integrated social-ecological research and the interdisciplinary journal of Ambio has published ground-breaking contributions in this field. This reflection piece identifies and discusses integration of the human and natural spheres in urban social-ecological research using the following foundational papers as important milestones: Folke et al. (1997), Ernstson et al. (2010) and Andersson et al. (2014). These papers each take unique approaches that aim to uncover core properties—processes, structures, and actors—of urban systems and set them into mutual relationship. Rapid urbanization has resulted in the substantial population growth in metropolitan areas. However, existing research on population change of the cities predominantly draws on grid statistical data at the administrative level, overlooking the intra-urban variegation of population change. Particularly, there is a lack of attention given to the spatio-temporal change of population across different urban forms and functions. This paper therefore fills in the lacuna by clarifying the spatio-temporal characteristics of population growth in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) from 2000 to 2020 through the methods of local climate zone (LCZ) scheme and urban–rural gradients. The results showed that: (1) High population density was observed in the compact high-rise (LCZ 1) areas, with a noticeable decline along urban–rural gradients. (2) The city centers of GBA experienced the most significant population growth, while certain urban fringes and rural areas witnessed significant population shrinkage. (3) The rate of growth tended to slow down after 2010, but the uneven development of population-based urbanization was also noticeable, as urbanization and industrialization varied across different LCZ types and cities in GBA. This paper studies new changes in elderly care in urban areas against the background of population aging with data from the China Social Survey 2021. The study revealed that urban families mainly adopt two models—the "living-with-the-elderly" model and the "providing-economic-support" model—and that there is a substitution effect between the two models. Regarding individual characteristics, younger individuals with higher education levels tend to use the providing-economic-support model instead of the living-with-the-elderly model. In terms of family features, the greater the number of underage children in a family is, the greater the probability of giving economic support and the lower the probability of living with elderly people, reflecting a family resource allocation model centered on "children". This paper further explores the impact of urban female employment on family care model choice and finds that employed women are more inclined to use economic support instead of living with elderly people. The study suggested that the government should gradually improve the public resource support system, promote community service infrastructure development, and expand professional service supply capabilities. Smart city construction is crucial for regional economic development, and the micro-level impact of such construction on business operations cannot be ignored. Based on the panel data of Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2008 to 2020, this paper investigates the relationship between smart city construction and firm performance and its mechanism of action. The study findings show that (1) smart city construction significantly improves enterprise performance; (2) the improvements are significant across all industries and regions; and (3) the impact of smart city construction on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and nonstate enterprises is more significant than that on large enterprises and state-owned enterprises. Building on the notion that mobility plays a critical role in everyday urban life in Africa as elsewhere, this editorial provides an introduction to the special collection 'The Past in Present African Urban Mobility Systems'. As we introduce the papers in this collection, we argue for an understanding of contemporary urban mobility systems that account for their historical roots. While historians of African transport have provided insights into the origins of mobility systems on the continent, we wish to animate the contemporary experience of those systems, advocating for a mobilities longue durée. Land provides a foundation for socio-cultural identity, economic survival and political stability in most sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. However, land-related crisis in the wake of rapid urbanization without a corresponding rapid expansion of the urban economy has further taken a toll on access to land and tenure security and made effective urban land governance a challenge. Although many reforms have been enacted in the last few decades to formalize traditional customary landholding system in SSA, insecure land and property rights remain the major issues militating effective urban land governance in the region. This paper provides a new theoretical perspective to achieving effective urban land governance in the context of SSA. This new perspective, based on transcendental critical realism, offers a useful meta-theoretical foundation that looks beyond the discernible but complex social reality about land and the relations it entails to the underlying causal powers and generative mechanisms that have produced these evidential phenomena. Based on a critical analysis of existing literature, the paper argued that if the processes that generate the social phenomenon of landholding are better understood, more appropriate approaches for managing these generative causes can be devised rather than simply mitigating the effects. With the development of urbanization, the problem of the disintegrated between industry and city became more prominent, exploring the reasons. The efficiency of new-type industry has been the crucial factor in city-industry integration. This paper constructs the measurement index system of new-type urbanization via DEA-BCC methodology, starting from the quality of urbanization to analyze the efficiency of urbanization. This paper chooses the total energy consumption, general public budget expenditure, and the proportion of employment personnel in the tertiary industry in all urban units as input variables. The total retail sales of consumer goods, urbanization rate, average annual concentration of pm2.5 (popW), and built-up area as output variables. This paper uses DEA method to measure the comprehensive efficiency value, technical efficiency value, and scale efficiency value of new urbanization in Shanghai, and analyzes the influencing factors of urbanization efficiency. The results show the following: (1) The overall level of comprehensive efficiency value, technical efficiency value, and scale efficiency of Shanghai's new-type urbanization are relatively high, especially the technical efficiency basically stays at a high level. The overall trend of scale efficiency and comprehensive efficiency is consistent, and the comprehensive efficiency is greatly influenced by scale efficiency. (2) The technical efficiency of urbanization in Shanghai is close to the optimal, and there is little space for further increasing technological input to improve the comprehensive efficiency of new-type urbanization. The scale efficiency is slightly lower than the technical efficiency, and there is still some space for optimization. (3) In terms of urbanization input indicators, Shanghai's total energy consumption and general public budget input were too much in the early years, which led to the reduction of urbanization efficiency, and the situation has been improved in recent years. In terms of the output index of urbanization, increasing the total retail sales of social consumer goods and the output of built-up area can make the urbanization efficiency of Shanghai reach the optimal efficiency. In the case of China, there is a need of green energy system to boost growth and environment. However, the current growth of urbanization is putting high pressure on energy system through financial capital. Hence, it is a need to develop such path through renewable energy consumption, capital development, and urbanization to enhance the performance of development and environment. Therefore, this paper contributes to the literature by adding the asymmetries between renewable energy, urbanization, economic growth, and capital investment by covering the period from 1970 to 2021. For this purpose, we apply the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag model to find the nonlinearities between the variables under study. The findings confirm the asymmetric short- and long-term relationships between the variables. In this sense, capitalization shows the short- and long-term asymmetric impacts on renewable energy consumption. In addition, urbanization and economic growth have long-term asymmetric and positive impacts on renewable energy consumption. The rich vegetation areas with a variety of biodiversity are designated under categories of protected areas. Protected areas on Earth are the biomes where the elements of nature function together and maintain the life cycle. These protected areas include forest cover, rivers, waterbodies, mangroves, etc. which are the origin of ecology and biodiversity and provide natural resources utilized for human needs. Maintaining protected area is an essential aspect of managing the forest covers and a key strategy for combating the negative effects of biodiversity loss and fragmentation. The research aims to assess the vegetation health in the protected areas with NDVI using remote sensing. The paper also explores the factors for vegetation degradation and related habitat areas. The decline in vegetation quality, related species variety, and effect on their habitat areas are checked with NDVI results. The protected areas are subjected to various anthropogenic pressures, including grazing, forest fire, and wood harvesting. The paper highlights the need for effective management strategies to mitigate the identified challenges and ensure the long-term conservation and sustainability of the protected areas. This will ensure more habitat availability, healthy vegetation, genetic exchange between species populations, and a reduction in human-wildlife conflict. Urbanization is occurring at an unprecedented rate in developing countries like Ethiopia, especially with the rapid growth of industrialization. However, this urbanization and industrial development surge puts immense pressure on preparing and implementing city spatial plans. Urban spatial planning plays a crucial role in shaping the development of cities, aiming to create livable and sustainable urban development. The plan-making process and its subsequent implementation often encounter challenges that hinder the realization of planned objectives. Galan and Dukem, cities near Addis Ababa's capital, have seen substantial industrial investment in recent decades. This article explores the challenges associated with urban spatial planning and industrial development while proposing alternative approaches. The paper relies on information gathered from primary and secondary sources, including expert surveys and key informants' interviews. The research highlights that industrial developments have led to significant and uncontrolled changes in urban land use and urbanization in the study areas. Due to the lack of clear planning guidelines and institutional capacity, the study cities are experiencing haphazard development without effective urban spatial plans. Proximity to Addis Ababa has driven the urbanization process through increased investments. The article contends that effective management of urbanization and industrialization can create enjoyable living conditions and foster job growth. Macroeconomic policies, including industrial policies, should pay attention to spatial elements and prevent policy-making processes that are "space-blind". This, however, requires clairvoyance and a high level of expertise, integrating inputs from advocacy planning and community participation to bridge gaps and ensure effective urban spatial plans and industrialization processes. Urbanization has rapidly transformed the global landscape, and its impact on ecology and biodiversity has a critical concern for sustainable development. Integrating urban planning and ecology can help to address these impacts by promoting sustainable urban development and protecting the ecosystem. In this research, a systematic literature review is conducted to explore the integration of urban planning and ecology. The research identified key terms and their associated networks between ecosystems and urban growth. This paper aims to explore the connection between urbanization and ecology through a bibliometric and scientometric review of research trends. Bibliometric and scientometric analyses are conducted to identify the key research areas, influential keywords, and research trends. The results revealed that the research on urbanization and protected areas has increased exponentially since the 2000s, with a focus on identifying the impacts of urbanization on ecology. The paper highlighted the need for more research in developing countries to address the unique challenges of urbanization in and around protected areas. The research also identified the need for interdisciplinary research to develop sustainable urbanization strategies that account for ecological restoration and conservation. Urban energy issues have attracted global attentions due to the key role in controlling climate change. As one of the world's largest metropolises, Beijing has been focusing on improving urban energy performances to achieve green transition and sustainable development during the past decades, for which purpose the measurement and decomposition of energy performance is of vital importance. In this paper, exergy is introduced as one of the indicators under the frame of index decomposition analysis. An hierarchical framework is constructed to reveal the contributions from different level of urban energy system to overall energy performance. Beijing's energy and exergy consumption and intensity are then analyzed and compared from the city and sector level during 2008–2017. Results suggest that Beijing's city and sector-level energy performance has been improving during the last 10 years and technical improvements contribute significantly from both energy and exergy perspectives. Meanwhile, changes from Beijing's industrial structure and energy supply structure display neutral contributions, which probably indicate the underestimation of structural contribution is caused under the IDA framework. Solid waste management (SWM) is a pressing concern and significant research topic that requires attention from citizens and government stakeholders. Most of the responsibility of waste management is on the municipal sector for its collection, reallocation, and reuse of other resources. The daily solid waste production is more than 54,850 tonnes in urban areas and is difficult to manage due to limited resources and different administrative and service issues. New technologies are playing their role in this area but how to integrate the technologies is still a question, especially for developing countries. This paper is divided into two main phases including a detailed investigation and a technological solution. In the first phase, the data is collected by using the qualitative method to investigate and identify the issues related to waste management. After a detailed investigation and results, the gap is identified by using statistical analysis and proposed a technological solution in the second phase. The technology-based solution is used to control and manage waste with a low-cost, fast, and manageable solution. The new sensor-based technologies, cellular networks, and social media are utilized to monitor the trash in the areas. The trash management department receives notification via cellular services to locate the dustbin when the dustbin reaches a maximum level so the department may send a waste collector vehicle to the relevant spot to collect waste. The smart and fast solution will connect all stakeholders in the community and reduce the cost and time and make the collection process faster. Facing the severe situation of environmental problems, coordinating the sustainable development of tourism and the construction of new urbanization is conducive to regional sustainable development. Based on the perspective of uncoupling coordination, this paper evaluates the coordination relationship between the sustainable development of tourism and the development of new urbanization, analyzes their temporal and spatial characteristics, and analyzes the restriction mechanism behind the uncoordinated relationship from the dynamic interaction. The findings are as follows: (1) At present, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Anhui are at a low level of uncoordinated development, while other regions are at an antagonistic uncoordinated development stage. (2) The regional difference of uncoupling coordination degree between tourism eco-efficiency and new urbanization is getting smaller and smaller, and it tends to develop in a balanced way, which accords with the strategic goal of coordinated development. However, the degree of uncoupling coordination changes from relatively weak aggregation to relatively strong aggregation. (3) From the long-term dynamic impact, the eco-efficiency of tourism has a negative impact on the development of new urbanization in Shanghai, Chongqing, Yunnan and a positive impact on Jiangsu and Hubei, with the contribution rates of 26%, 66%, 58%, 24% and 51%, respectively. New urbanization has a positive impact on the eco-efficiency of tourism in Anhui and a negative impact on Guizhou, with the contribution rates of 65% and 57%, respectively. Power-law city-size distributions are a statistical regularity researched in many countries and urban systems. In this history of science treatise we reconsider Felix Auerbach's paper published in 1913. We reviewed his analysis and found (i) that a constant absolute concentration, as introduced by him, is equivalent to a power-law distribution with exponent ≈ 1 , (ii) that Auerbach describes this equivalence, and (iii) that Auerbach also pioneered the empirical analysis of city-size distributions across countries, regions, and time periods. We further investigate his legacy as reflected in citations and find that important follow-up work, e.g. by Lotka (Elements of physical biology. Williams & Wilkins Company, Baltimore, 1925) and Zipf (Human behavior and the principle of least effort: an introduction to human ecology, Martino Publishing, Manfield Centre, CT (2012), 1949), does give proper reference to his discovery—but others do not. For example, only approximately 20% of city-related works citing Zipf (1949) also cite Auerbach (Petermanns Geogr Mitteilungen 59(74):74–76, 1913). To our best knowledge, Lotka (1925) was the first to describe the power-law rank-size rule as it is analyzed today. Saibante (Metron Rivista Internazionale di Statistica 7(2):53–99, 1928), building on Auerbach and Lotka, investigated the power-law rank-size rule across countries, regions, and time periods. Zipf's achievement was to embed these findings in his monumental 1949 book. We suggest that the use of "Auerbach–Lotka–Zipf law" (or "ALZ-law") is more appropriate than "Zipf's law for cities", which also avoids confusion with Zipf's law for word frequency. The purpose of this paper is to quantify the level of new-type urbanization and unravel the spatial and nonlinear effects of new-type urbanization and technological innovation on industrial carbon emissions. Although the impact of traditional urbanization levels on carbon emissions has been widely studied, there is still a huge room for optimization, and the impact of new-type urbanization on carbon emissions has not yet been clarified. Selecting 37 cities in the Yangtze River Delta as a research sample, this paper measures the new-type urbanization based on an evaluation system we build. Consequently, we assess the spatial and nonlinear effects of new-type urbanization and technological innovation on carbon emissions by the spatial Durbin model and non-parameter addictive model, respectively. The results indicate that the new-type urbanization and low-carbon city pilot policy have significant spatial spillover effects on reducing carbon dioxide emissions, while the economic growth plays a positive role in increasing carbon emission. As for nonlinear effects, there is a significant inverted "N"-shaped relationship between the level of new-type urbanization and carbon dioxide emissions, while the nexus between technological innovation and carbon emissions is an inverted "U"-shaped relationship. This paper provides a new perspective for confirming the mechanism of the new-type urbanization on carbon emissions. The improvement of well-being of residents is the core of the people-centred urbanization. Inhabitants' emphasis on healthy lifestyle draws attention to the provision of sports infrastructure. However, the spatial pattern of sport infrastructure development and in particular the driving forces from urbanization across China have not been examined yet in the literature. This paper aims to explore how the national sports infrastructure in mainland China is driven and scaled by urbanization, using data from the sixth National Sports Venues Census and a multi-scale geographically weighted regression approach. The results revealed strong regional inequality in the development of sports infrastructure in the stage of accelerating urbanization in China, with better provision of sports infrastructure in eastern than in western regions. The three dimensions of urbanization (urban population, public financial expenditure and built-up area) significantly explained the spatial disparity between 289 cities at prefecture-city level. There should be a feedback loop between the accumulative developments of urbanization and sports infrastructure. The contributing driving forces and subsequent regional heterogeneity suggest that sports space theory, the inequality amplification model, and hysteresis effect are comparatively suitable for explaining the spatial inequality characteristics of sports infrastructure development in China. A Sport Inequality Alert was conceptualized as a policy instrument for monitoring regional inequality and governing the development of sports infrastructure. As major carriers of modern economy and population, cities and towns are vortex centers of pollution migration, and the environmental effects brought about by China's unprecedented urbanization can be imagined, although the specific scale is still a mystery. This paper focuses on the nonlinear response mechanism of urban PM2.5 concentration to the urbanization population scale, considering that China's urbanization development path is dominated by large- and medium-sized cities. The panel data of PM2.5 concentration of Chinese cities observed by satellite during 1998–2016 are used to capture the nonlinear characteristics of panel threshold model (PTM). The estimation results of the double-threshold PTM including the quadratic term of urbanization population show that the U-shaped relationship between urbanization population and PM2.5 concentration is nonlinear adjusted by urban GDP per capita with the two thresholds of 6777 Yuan and 10,296 Yuan at 2010 constant price. When the urban GDP per capita exceeds 10,296 Yuan, the urbanized population at the turning point of the U-shaped curve is 12.967 million people, which only appears in a few super-large cities such as Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing. Analyzing the dynamics of parking traffic can better represent the real dynamic states of road networks, thereby allowing for a deeper analysis of the parking system's impact. This paper comparatively investigates the impact of parking policies on two traffic networks with different infrastructure, socio-economic, and policy characteristics. Parking space, average parking duration, and parking fee policies were analyzed as a function of cruising distances and cruising time with indirect effects on traffic emissions. Empirically, the system dynamics model application is tested and validated with the macroscopic data from two central business districts (CBDs) in Shanghai (Xujiahui area) and Zurich (Bahnhofstrasse area). Results showed Bahnhofstrasse CBD is more sensitive against the policy shifts with relatively higher elasticity and indicated greater responsiveness in aggregating traffic emissions when compared with Xujiahui CBD. The role of enterprise dormitories as the main living arrangements of Chinese migrant workers who are registered as rural residents but make their living in cities in pursuit of urbanisation cannot be ignored. However, the existing research on living spaces and the urban integration of migrant workers lacks sufficient focus on enterprise dormitories. Using the logit model to examine representative data on the Pearl River Delta and Yangtze River Delta areas and applying a national dataset taken from the China Migrants Dynamic Survey, we analyse how enterprise dormitories affect the urban integration of migrant workers across the different migration stages in this paper. The research results reveal that there are two migration stages in the urban integration of migrant workers. In the individual migration stage, based on the production target, enterprises accommodate migrant workers as a means of reducing their labour costs by increasing the labour time input of migrant workers. Moreover, in the family migration stage, enterprise dormitories are conducive to the low-cost integration of migrant workers into urban society, but they negatively affect further family migration because of the insufficient family living space that they provide. This research offers the intellectual foundation required for not only resolving the contradiction between the family reunification of migrant workers and their employment situation but also for the optimisation of housing policy. In the current era, a new class of lightweight, silent, and all-electric aircraft that can take off and land vertically is about to transform mobility in major urban centers. Safer and quieter than helicopters, and operating in some cases without a pilot, they can supplement land mobility. Indeed, urban air mobility (UAM) has recently been a hot topic for debate and scientific research. However, it requires new types of service and technology and a novel business model. For a successful implementation, this paper provides the most insightful knowledge and actors, focusing on demand assessment through current research advancements in the area of urban air mobility. For that purpose, bibliometric analysis has been conducted, using a four-step methodology based on the search of the most frequently used keywords. The research work investigated the needs of the main stakeholders and illustrated how UAM can mitigate the pressure put on decision-makers regarding the mobility demand. The results show recent trends in scientific publications and citations, most cited articles, countries, and organizations that are more involved in this research subject, keyword co-co-occurrence analysis to identify and analyze current research areas and their associated barriers and challenges, using the VOSviewer software and WoS analytic feature. In this paper, we focus on Guangdong province, which is a frontier area of Reform and Opening up, and analyze the variation of urban and rural temperature to detect the urbanization warming effect from 1951 to 2018, based on the daily temperature data of 85 weather stations. We classified the metrological stations into urban and rural stations according to the urbanization population size, population density and urban built-up area data. The combined methodology of mathematical statistics, trend analysis, urban/rural station comparison and spatial analysis was adopted to reveal the urbanization warming and its spatial–temporal heterogeneity. The results show that the warming process in Guangdong Province is very complex and has high temporal and spatial heterogeneity. From 1951 to 2018, the average temperature in the coldest month in Guangdong Province increased with the fastest (0.27 °C/10a) rate, and the annual average temperature increased slightly faster than the average temperature in the warmest month (0.15 °C/10a vs. 0.12 °C/10a). The comparative study on the temperature of urban and rural stations shows that the temperature increase rate of urban stations is faster than that of rural stations (0.30 °C/10a vs. 0.23 °C/10a), especially the average temperature in the coldest month, which is most significantly driven by urbanization, and the contribution rate of urbanization is about 24.09% in general. Affected by the background climate and the stages of urbanization, the warming effect of urbanization fluctuates obviously in different periods. Stronger urbanization effect can be witnessed during 1980–2000, when the urbanization developed into mid-level with highest rate. The spatial differentiation of urbanization warming effect is prominent. The temperature of urban stations in Eastern Guangdong increases most rapidly. The urbanization contribution rates to the coldest month average, annual average and the warmest month average temperature reach 33.86%, 25.70% and 17.64%, respectively, which are around 1.69, 1.50 and 1.19 times that of the Pearl River Delta. The average temperature of the warmest month in Western Guangdong shows a weak cooling effect. The rapid urbanization of cities in the Global South, and indeed Ghanaian cities has left many Municipalities grappling with a widening gap in infrastructure need. This is largely due to limited financial resources to expand infrastructure to keep pace with urban expansion. In this context, land-based financing has become topical among city managers in generating resources to provide the much-needed urban infrastructure. The paper examines how non-state actors such as parastatal land operators collaborate with state actors—local authorities to provide urban infrastructure using land-based financing mechanisms. The case study approach was used to study two parastatal land development companies—Tema Development Company and Ghana Airport Company. The paper finds that leasehold premium and infrastructure levy are instruments used for providing urban infrastructure. It further finds that the application of these instruments requires the management of complex factors and stakeholders; proper understanding of land market conditions; comprehensive property-monitoring systems; effective communication among fiscal and planning entities; and political resolve to realize the full potential of land-based financing. Smart city imaginaries have emerged in southern cities driven by neoliberal logics in the urban space. Scholarly work in India has continued to engage with sweeping accounts of cities as opposed to detailed empirical studies of local projects. This paper attempts to address this gap through an in-depth ethnographic inquiry of a slum redevelopment project in the city of Bhubaneswar, India. The key objective is to understand the ways in which informal residents adapted to and changed smart city policies in India in recent years. Using an evolutionary lens, and drawing on participant observation; document analysis; and semi-structured interviews, the paper puts forth a descriptive cases that advances the notion that smart cities imaginaries have resulted in abrupt changes in the institutional context while getting entangled itself within the legal system. The paper also demonstrates how smart cities discourses counter-intuitively result in emergent spaces of resistance in the form of counter-hegemonic practices, thus allowing spaces for the evolution of new actors and imaginaries from unfamiliar territories. The paper concludes by discussing that city planning and governance pathways in India risk creating complicated path dependencies and rigid governance future pathways that may amplify conflict. In a number of recent elections in Western Europe, support for far-right populist parties has been significantly higher in non-urban areas than in urban areas. This paper answers the following questions; (1) Can the urban–rural divide in voting behavior be explained by the fact that urban and non-urban populations differ in terms of education, income and other individual characteristics of voters, or by variations in immigration? (2) Can variations in public service supply explain parts of the urban–rural divide in far-right populist support? and (3) How does population growth and public services relate to voting behavior when examining urban and rural municipalities separately? The analyses combine survey data on individual characteristics and register data aggregated on municipalities. The results in this paper suggest that voter characteristics and immigration explain a substantial part of the urban–rural divide. However, the propensity to vote for a far-right populist party is still higher in regions with lower population growth even when controlling for individual characteristics and immigration. When considering public service supply, the urban–rural divide is further weakened. The propensity to vote for a far-right party decreases with higher public service supply and higher share of immigrants. The findings in this paper thereby support the hypothesis that individuals in shrinking areas with lower access to public services are likely to respond to the deterioration of their location by casting a vote on the far-right (i.e., protest voting). Under the background of "the Belt and Road" and "the economic corridor of China, Mongolia and Russia" initiatives, it is of great significance to study the temporal and spatial evolution characteristics of urbanization in Russia. This paper studied the population urbanization level, economic urbanization level, social urbanization level, eco-environment urbanization level, and their coupling coordination development degree during 2005–2020 in Russia. First, combining with the Population-Economic-Sociology-Eco-environment model, the paper constructed the index systems to evaluate the urbanization development levels in Russia. Second, based on the comprehensive weighting method of entropy weight and variation coefficient, this paper calculated the population urbanization level, economic urbanization level, social urbanization level, and eco-environment urbanization level in Russia. Third, this paper used the coupling coordination model to measure the coupling coordination degree of the urbanization development levels in Russia. Finally, the spatial differentiation of the population urbanization level, economic urbanization level, social urbanization level, eco-environment urbanization level, and their coupling coupling-coordination degree was performed, respectively, by using ArcGIS. The results are as the following. First, from 2005 to 2020, the economic urbanization level and eco-urbanization level have shown the increasing trend in Russia. The population urbanization level and social urbanization level have shown the stable changing trend in Russia. The eco-environment urbanization and economic urbanization contribute larger share to the urbanization system compared with the population urbanization and social urbanization. The coupling coordination development degree of population urbanization level, economic urbanization level, social urbanization level, and eco-environment urbanization level has showed a slight increasing trend. However, the overall situation of the urbanization in Russia is still in the moderate uncoordinated recession stage. Second, the federal subjects with high urbanization development levels are mainly distributed in Moscow city, Moscow Region, Sverdlovsk Region, Tumen Region, Saint-Petersburg city, Republic of Tatarstan, Krasnoyarsk Territory, Republic of Bashkortostan, Chelyabinsk Region, Nizhny Novgorod Region, Krasnodar Territory, Rostov Region, and Khanty-Mansiysky Autonomous Area. The federal subjects with low ones are mainly located in Republic of Khakasia, Republic of Marii El, Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, Republic of Tyva, Republic of Karachaevo-Cherkessia, Republic of Kalmykia, Republic of Altay, Jewish Autonomous Area, and Republic of Ingushetia. Third, spatially, from 2005 to 2020, the urbanization pattern of population, economy, society, eco-environment, and their coupling coordination degree in Russia all show unbalanced development characteristics. The population urbanization pattern and the social urbanization pattern have not changed significantly, showing the spatial characteristics of "high west, low east," and "high middle, low north, low south." The economic urbanization pattern has been increasing significantly, showing the spatial characteristics of "high core, low edge." The eco-environment urbanization pattern has not changed significantly, showing the spatial characteristics of "high north, low south." The coupling coordinated development degree of urbanization pattern has showed a slight increasing trend, showing the spatial characteristics of "high middle, low north, low south," "high west, low east". Persisting in opening up and achieving coordinated development of economy, society, and ecology is China's major strategies for achieving sustainable urbanization. Ecological efficiency is a reasonable indicator to measure the development level of a circular economy. Therefore, using the statistical data of 30 provinces in China from 2004 to 2016, this paper uses the super-efficiency SBM model that considers undesired output to measure the eco-efficiency value, which is used to measure the level of circular economy development in each province. Based on this, a panel model is constructed to test the impact of circular economy and FDI on urbanization. The empirical results show that (1) there is a complex nonlinear relationship between the development of circular economy and the advancement of urbanization, and the shape of the curve varies with areas; (2) FDI under environmental regulation is conducive to promoting China's urbanization to achieve green, effective, and sustainable development; and (3) the development of the tertiary industry, human resources, innovation capabilities, and employment situation is conducive to promoting China's urbanization. Finally, based on the empirical results, this paper puts forward policy recommendations to achieve green, efficient, and intelligent development of Chinese cities by promoting the development of a circular economy and strengthening FDI screening. The increasing urban population and the restructuring of urban economies are the main aspects that determine urban development in the twenty-first century. Rapid urbanization is among the most significant anthropogenic factors that impact ecosystems and sustainability. Urbanization is a "double-edged sword." Even though it contributes to economic prosperity and social development, at the same time, it poses severe challenges to the natural environment and social system. The scientific community emphasizes the need to investigate the relationship between cities and the environment to comprehend their dynamic interactions related with problems such as climate change, consumption of natural resources, and life quality degradation. Population growth and urbanization are central considerations of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 11, dealing with making cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Moreover, the new circular economy model is receiving increasing attention globally as a solution to the current production and consumption model, which is based on constant growth and increasing resource input. The objective of this paper was to identify the major challenges occurred due to the rapid urbanization in a coastal city though a qualitative and quantitative waste compositional analysis. The ultimate goal is to propose the waste compositional analysis as a new indicator in the literature for determination of the degree of metabolism in an island region. According to the compositional analysis, the higher the population density in a region, the greater the volume of garbage produced and, consequently, the infrastructure necessary for waste management. Also, the increased seasonal tourist activity leads to an increase in the number of tourist accommodations and services. The results provided may also be applicable in other cities with similar characteristics related with tourism habits and the challenges they may face as a result of the waste production. The urban water system theory is an extension of the basin water system science on an urban scale, providing a new systematic solution for the unbalanced human-water relationship and severe water challenges, such as waterlogging, black and odorous water, and ecological degradation caused by urbanization. Most existing studies on urban water systems have focused on individual water cycle processes linked with water supply and sewage treatment plants, but mutual feedback between the water cycle and its associated material circulation and water ecology, as well as human processes, still needs further exploration. In this paper, the concept, theory, and technical methodology of the urban water system were developed based on the water cycle and basin water system science. The Urban Water System 5.0 (UWS 5.0) model was developed by integrating the Time Variant Gain rainfall-runoff Model with Urban water system (TVGM_Urban) in different underlying surface conditions for analyzing the natural-social water cycle processes and their associated water environmental and ecological processes and the influence of multiscale sponge measures. Herein, five major simulation functions were realized: rainfall-runoff-nonpoint source pollutant load, water and pollutant transportations through the drainage network system, terminal regulation and purification, socioeconomic water cycle, and water system assessment and regulation. The location for the case study used in this paper was Wuhan City. The findings showed that the entire urban water system should consider the built-up area and its associated rivers and lakes as the research object and explore the integrations among the urban natural-social water cycle and river regulations inside and outside of the city as well as the effects of socioeconomic development and sponge measures on the water quantity-quality-ecology processes. The UWS 5.0 model efficiently simulated the urban rainfall-runoff process, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations in water bodies, and characteristic indicators of socioeconomic development. For the rainfall-runoff simulations, the correlation coefficient and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) fall under the excellent and good classes, respectively. For the TN and TP concentration simulations, results exhibited good bias and the correlation coefficients exceeded 0.90 for 78.1% of the sampled sites. The simulation of 18 socioeconomic indicators provided excellent bias, correlation coefficient, and NSE values of 100%, 83.3%, and 69.4% to total indicators, respectively. Based on the well-calibrated UWS 5.0 model, the source sponge, artificial enhancement, and source reduction-path interception-terminal treatment measures were optimized, which considerably mitigated waterlogging, black and odorous water, and lake eutrophication, respectively. The mitigation performance revealed that the maximum inundated area for a once-in-10-year rainfall event was reduced by 32.6%, the removal ratio of the black and odorous water area was 65%, the comprehensive trophic state index of water bodies was reduced by 37%, and the green development level of Wuhan City in 2020 increased from 0.56 to 0.67. This study is expected to advance the intersection and development of multidisciplinary fields (e.g., urban hydrology, environmental science, and ecology) and offer an important theoretical and technical basis for solving urban complex water issues and promoting green development of cities. This paper re-examines the influence of urban development on the number of flood events in Java from 1970 to 2020. This paper aims to prove development policies in Indonesia in the last 50 years and to analyze the correlation between flood events, population growth, and urbanization on a broader regional scale. The Moran-I spatial autocorrelation analysis method is applied to measure its spatial autocorrelation between urbanization and flood events. The dynamic urbanization illustrated by spatial–temporal analysis from the 1970 to the 2020s using Landsat data; in this case, urbanization is measured using the parameters of population concentration and built-up area growth in urban areas of Java. In more detail, the results of hot-spot clusters show development from "lower-low" dispersion in the 70 s to areas with a majority of "higher-high" clustered in 2000–2020. It proves that the development burden in Java is in high category impact, so solutions for population distribution, land development, and spatial planning are needed to ensure environmental sustainability in Java. Over the past 40 years, China has witnessed the world's largest urbanization process. In light of its natural and cultural conditions featuring resource scarcity, frequent natural disasters, rich cultural heritage and regional disparities and dynamics, this process aggravates the complex and severe problems faced by urban areas, including resource and environmental damage, security risks and cultural degradation. To address these issues, a shift in national and regional urban spatial layouts from improving economic competitiveness to balancing protection and development as well as security and development is needed. Related theories and research methods should also be adjusted accordingly. Therefore, given China's specific conditions and regional spatial layouts, the paper introduces the "national spatial planning theory," which aims to create a sound living environment. The core concept is "precise adaptation," which ensures the adaption of urban development to natural and cultural conditions. It is the first theory that proposes to develop the national urban spatial layout based on the analysis of ecological environment. It also suggests shifting the focus from eco-environment to security and culture as urbanization progresses and problems change constantly. In addition, a method framework and technical system of "precise analysis, adaptive distribution and dynamic evaluation" is formulated to build an adaptive urban spatial layout on the basis of quantitative analysis of the capacity of spatial resources. The rapid urbanization and land transformation in India have sparked apprehension regarding the ensuing alterations in land surface temperature and their linked environmental ramifications. This research paper endeavors to explore the dynamics of land use and land cover and their impact on land surface temperature, with a specific focus on the Faridabad district in India. Rapid urbanization, an 80% increase in population, and in-migration have significantly expanded the built-up area from 1993 to 2023. Remote sensing and GIS techniques were used to analyze 30 years of land use and land cover changes, integrating satellite, topographic, and meteorological data. Transition Potential Modeling (TPM) identified trends in built-up areas, while Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) correlated with changes in vegetation and built-up areas. Findings reveal altered LULC patterns, mainly due to urban expansion, industrial growth, and changes in agriculture. This shift from natural land cover to built-up areas has increased land surface temperature. The study shows a decrease in arable land (71.8% in 1993 to 53.4% in 2023) and a significant 21.9% growth in built-up areas during this period, leading to a 7% rise in land surface temperature. Strong positive correlations were found between mean land surface temperature and NDBI, and negative correlations with NDVI. The study emphasizes the need for proper planning in Faridabad, recommending increased open spaces, green cover, and the introduction of green belts to stabilize land surface temperature. This paper investigated the dynamic and causal relationship among energy intensity, economic growth, urbanization, energy consumption, FDI, and PM2.5 in 1995–2019 period for China, India, Germany, Canada, USA and United Kingdom countries through Panel Fourier Bootstrapping ARDL (PFBARDL) model and Panel Fourier causality test. According to PFBARDL results, the evidence of cointegration between the variables was detected. In the PFBARDL model, the error correction coefficient is determined as -0.169. Results showed that there is a bidirectional causality between economic growth and PM2.5 release, between fdi and PM2.5 release, between energy intensity and PM2.5 release. Rising economic growth, energy consumption structure, and urbanization will have an adverse effect on PM2.5 concentrations. Policy makers must carefully balance the connection between mitigation of PM2.5 and diminishing energy consumption, and increasing economic growth, urbanization, and energy intensity for determining policies to control PM2.5 concentrations. This paper examines the relationship among ecological footprint (EF), electricity consumption, and GDP in China using annual data ranging from 1960 to 2019. However, factors like trade openness, urbanization, and life expectancy might increase EF as ecological distortions are mainly human-induced. This study explores the effect of these variables on the environment, which is captured by EF. Quantile Regression estimates indicate that electricity consumption and real GDP increase environmental degradation, while trade and urbanization reduce EF, allowing for a higher environmental quality. On the other hand, the spectral Granger-causality tests reveal that only urbanization and life expectancy affect environmental degradation over the whole frequency domain. In the new era, the key measure to accelerate the construction of smart city, so as to promote the modernization of urban governance system and governance capacity, is to establish a good urban innovation ecosystem, and guide its continuous evolution to the direction of the highest efficiency and the best performance. Focusing on solving the practical problem of "how the urban innovation ecosystem evolves", this paper develops a NK algorithm using BP neural network and DEMATEL method. First, through literature research, constructing the urban innovation ecosystem including five subsystems of innovation talents, innovation subjects, innovation resources, innovation environment and innovation network. Then, taking Beijing as an example, the weights and the number of epistatic relationships of each subsystem in its innovation ecosystem are calculated by BP neural network and DEMATEL method, and the NK model is modified; on this basis, the fitness values corresponding to different states of the system are calculated using MATLAB software, and the optimal evolution path of Beijing innovation ecosystem is determined through the comparison of 100,000 simulation results. The results show that the optimal evolution path of Beijing's innovation ecosystem is to create a favorable environment and culture for innovation first; then increase the input of innovation resources; and then promote the development of innovation network assets; on this basis, cultivate, attract and retain innovative talents; and finally strengthen the construction of innovation subjects. This paper redefines the connotation of China's human development in the context of the new development concept and high-quality development, and constructs the China Human Development Index (CHDI) indicator system accordingly. Then, based on the inequality adjustment model and DFA model, the human development level of each region in China from 1990 to 2018 is measured, and the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of China's CHDI and the current situation of regional imbalance are analyzed accordingly. Finally, LMDI decomposition technique and spatial econometric model were used to study the influencing factors of China's human development index. The results show that: (1) The weights of the CHDI sub-index estimated by the DFA model have good stability, and it is a relatively good objective weighting method. (2) Compared with the HDI, the CHDI in this paper can better reflect the level of human development in China. (3) China's human development has made great achievements and has basically achieved the leap from the low human development level group to the high human development level group. However, there are still significant gaps between regions. (4) From the results of LMDI decomposition, the livelihood index is the most important driving index of CHDI growth in each region. From the results of spatial econometric regressions, there is a strong spatial autocorrelation of China's CHDI among the 31 provinces. GDP per capita, financial education expenditure per capita, urbanization rate, and financial health expenditure per capita are the main influencing factors of CHDI. Based on the above research findings, this paper proposes a scientific and effective macroeconomic policy with important reference value for promoting the high-quality development of China's economy and society. Our paper investigates the association of renewable energy, financial development, urbanization, and growth in China along with technology. The newly developed econometric techniques (asymmetries) have been applied to explore short and long-run nonlinear relation among variables by utilizing annual data for the period of 1965–2021. In nonlinear cointegration, findings highlight the importance of renewable energy consumption for growth and development. Urbanization also confirms a positive association with growth and development where positive shocks were more dominant to support the growth process. The stock of technology brings a positive impact on growth and development whereas financial development results reveal to consider policy carefully. Asymmetric causality supports a uni-directional causal association between renewable energy, financial development, and growth. Policy recommendations are also highlighted according to the results. Based on Panel data collected from 2011 to 2020 targeted to 50 prefecture-level cities in the Yellow River Basin, this paper adopted standard deviation ellipse and spatial Dubin model to explore the nonlinear effects and spatial spillover effects of urbanization on air pollution and ecological resilience in the Yellow River Basin. The results show that the degree of air pollution in the southeast of the Yellow River Basin is higher than that in the northwest of the Yellow River Basin, the distribution range of air pollution is shrinking, the concentration of ecological resilience is enhanced, and the ecological environment is developing for the better. There is a significant U-shaped relationship between urbanization and air pollution in the Yellow River Basin, and an inverted U-shaped relationship between urbanization and ecological resilience. For every 1% increase in urbanization, air pollution decreases by 0.0873%, ecological resilience increases by 0.4046%. For every 1% increase in the square term of urbanization, air pollution increases by 0.2271%, ecological resilience decreases by 0.1789%. The urbanization of the Yellow River Basin has a spatial spillover effect on air pollution and ecological resilience, and urbanization has a significant negative impact on the ecological environment of neighboring cities. Reducing carbon emissions is key to achieving the 13th UN sustainable development goals. With the acceleration of informatization and urbanization in the "Belt and Road Initiative" (BRI) countries, it is necessary to explore the impact of ICT and urbanization on carbon emissions in the BRI countries. This paper uses the Driscoll-Kraay panel regression method, multi-chain mediation effect model, and panel moment quantile regression method to study the influence channel and heterogeneous impact of ICT, urbanization, and their interaction on carbon emissions in 42 selected BRI countries. The main empirical results reveal the inhibition of ICT and the promotion of urbanization on carbon emissions. Moreover, the integrated development of ICT and urbanization contributes to reducing carbon emissions. Industrial structure upgrading and energy intensity are found to be the channels through which ICT, urbanization, and their interactions affect carbon emissions. In addition, the impact of ICT, urbanization, and their interaction on carbon emissions varies with different measurement indicators and quantiles. Therefore, it is suggested that BRI countries should formulate appropriate ICT development policies according to their conditions, strengthen ICT application, and especially promote the integrated development of ICT and urbanization, to achieve sustainable urban development. As an important way for China to integrate into the international circulation, foreign direct investment (FDI) can not only increase China's capital accumulation but also directly affect inclusive green growth by promoting the diffusion and transfer of green technologies and activating the domestic market. Based on China's provincial panel data from 2007 to 2019, this paper discusses the following issues: first, Global Malmquist-Luenberger (GML) productivity index is used to measure and analyze the current situation of inclusive green growth in 30 provinces of China; second, we set a fixed effect panel model to test the relationship between FDI and inclusive green growth in China. Third, based on PVAR (panel vector autoregressive) model, the dynamic impacts of FDI and new urbanization on inclusive green growth are tested. Finally, a regression model with the new urbanization level as the threshold variable is constructed to test the threshold effect of FDI on China's green inclusive growth. Accordingly, each region needs to formulate FDI introduction policies according to the local new urbanization level, so as to give full play to the positive role of FDI in inclusive green growth.
