Abstract

International audience; This paper focuses on the problem of the hierarchical multi‐label classification of research papers, which is the task of assigning the set of relevant labels for a paper from a hierarchy, using reduced amounts of labelled training data. Specifically, we study leveraging unlabelled data, which are usually plentiful and easy to collect, in addition to the few available labelled ones in a semi‐supervised learning framework for achieving better performance results. Thus, in this paper, we propose a semi‐supervised approach for the hierarchical multi‐label classification task of research papers based on the well‐known Co‐training algorithm, which exploit content and bibliographic coupling information as two distinct papers' views. In our approach, two hierarchical multi‐label classifiers, are learnt on different views of the labelled data, and iteratively select their most confident unlabelled samples, which are further added to the labelled set. The success of our suggested Co‐training‐based approach lies in two main components. The first is the use of two suggested selection criteria (i.e., Maximum Agreement and Labels Cardinality Consistency) that enforce selecting confident unlabelled samples. The second is the appliance of an oversampling method that rebalances the labels distribution of the initial labelled set, which reduces the reinforcement of the label imbalance issue during the Co‐training learning. The proposed approach is evaluated using a collection of scientific papers extracted from the ACM digital library. Performed experiments show the effectiveness of our approach with regards to several baseline methods.

Abstract

Introduction: Network and systems medicine has rapidly evolved over the past decade, thanks to computational and integrative tools, which stem in part from systems biology. However, major challenges and hurdles are still present regarding validation and translation into clinical application and decision making for precision medicine. Methods: In this context, the Collaboration on Science and Technology Action on Open Multiscale Systems Medicine (OpenMultiMed) reviewed the available advanced technologies for multidimensional data generation and integration in an open-science approach as well as key clinical applications of network and systems medicine and the main issues and opportunities for the future. Results: The development of multi-omic approaches as well as new digital tools provides a unique opportunity to explore complex biological systems and networks at different scales. Moreover, the application of findable, applicable, interoperable, and reusable principles and the adoption of standards increases data availability and sharing for multiscale integration and interpretation. These innovations have led to the first clinical applications of network and systems medicine, particularly in the field of personalized therapy and drug dosing. Enlarging network and systems medicine application would now imply to increase patient engagement and health care providers as well as to educate the novel generations of medical doctors and biomedical researchers to shift the current organ- and symptom-based medical concepts toward network- and systems-based ones for more precise diagnoses, interventions, and ideally prevention. Abstract

Formulaic expressions, such as 'in this paper we propose', are helpful for authors of scholarly papers because they convey communicative functions; in the above, it is showing the aim of this paper'. Thus, resources of formulaic expressions, such as a dictionary, that could be looked up easily would be useful. However, forms of formulaic expressions can often vary to a great extent. For example, 'in this paper we propose', 'in this study we propose' and 'in this paper we propose a new method to' are all regarded as formulaic expressions. Such a diversity of spans and forms causes problems in both extraction and evaluation of formulaic expressions. In this paper, we propose a new approach that is robust to variation of spans and forms of formulaic expressions. Our approach regards a sentence as consisting of a formulaic part and non-formulaic part. Then, instead of trying to extract formulaic expressions from a whole corpus, by extracting them from each sentence, different forms can be dealt with at once. Based on this formulation, to avoid the diversity problem, we propose evaluating extraction methods by how much they convey specific communicative functions rather than by comparing extracted expressions to an existing lexicon. We also propose a new extraction method that utilises named entities and dependency structures to remove the non-formulaic part from a sentence. Experimental results show that the proposed extraction method achieved the best performance compared to other existing methods., 21 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

Swarms of autonomous aircraft systems (SAAS) are used to accomplish missions that deal with sensitive and critical data. As such, these systems are subject to attacks among which clone attacks. Several clone attacks detection approaches either in stationary or mobile wireless sensor networks have been proposed. Unfortunately, the existing approaches are not suitable for swarms of autonomous aircraft systems because either they do not guarantee a fast enough detection (while most SAAS missions are real time missions, e.g. surveillance), or they depend on strong assumptions that are hard to achieve in practice (e.g. absence of nodes collusion, impossibility for an attacker to track a genuine node). In this paper, we present a novel clone attack detection approach specific to SAAS that solves several unaddressed issues and that makes it possible to improve the security and the privacy of the assets of the SAAS.

Abstract

International audience; Advanced internet and multimedia set-top boxes are today massively based on 4*4 MIMO systems, with multi-sub-bands standards (Wifi bands, LTE, Bluetooth,…). Multiple antennas spatially distributed on the plastic casing become therefore a great challenge for cost and performances motivations, thus promoting flexible technology and substrate, for assembling subsystems , under compactness considerations, as well as electrical performances improvement. In this paper, we discuss about the characterisation of Multi-band antennas designed on an ultra-low cost material (a cellulosic substrate, i.e. a paper) with design challenges in terms of radiation efficiency maximization and wideband properties under compactness constraints. Simulation and measurements are proposed to validate the designs.

Abstract

Fault diagnosis of sequential batch reactor (SBR), a widely applied wastewater treatment technology in papermaking industry with huge discharge, has been a significant challenge due to the inherent multi-period characteristics of the process. In this paper, based on the conventional multi-way principal component analysis (MPCA) method (Scenario 0), two sub-period division strategies based on the processing phases of SBR process (Scenario 1) and the similarities of the loading matrices between the adjacent time slices (Scenario 2) are proposed for the detection of faults. Combined with Scenario 0, using the field data of blower current, level of SBR reactor, dissolved oxygen of wastewater and the blower valve opening in the SBR process of paper mill, two different fault diagnosis models with Scenarios 1 and 2 are developed and evaluated, respectively. The study results revealed that, both the calculated statistics of T2 and sum of prediction errors (SPE) of the fault diagnosis models with Scenarios 1 and 2 could detect the faults and identify the fault locations and sources. Compared to Scenario 0 which neglects the correlations between the different stages of SBR process, the fault diagnosis model by Scenario 2 demonstrated a superiority ability in fault identification in terms of the fault’s time onset and fault’s sources with adequate accuracy. The results enable the feasible and reliable implementation of the developed sub-MPCA diagnosis model with Scenario 2 in the actual SBR plants.

Abstract

International audience; The task of tagging papers with semantic metadata in order to analyze their relatedness represents a good foundation for a paper recommender system. The analysis from this paper extends from previous research in order to create a graph of papers from a specific domain with the purpose of determining each article's importance within the considered corpus of papers. Moreover, as non-latent representations are powerful when used in conjunction with latent ones, our system retrieves semantically close words, not present in the paper, in order to improve the retrieval of papers. Our previous analyses used the semantic representation of papers in different semantic models with the purpose of creating visual graphs based on the semantic relatedness links between the abstracts. The current analysis takes a step forward by proposing a model that can suggest which papers are of the highest relevance, share similar concepts, and are semantically related with the initial query. Our study is performed using paper abstracts in the field of information technology extracted from the Web of Science citation index. The research includes a use case and its corresponding results by using interactive and exploratory network graph representations.

Abstract

Publication doctorant; International audience; Our research team is specialized in human-computer systems and their engineering, with focus on interactive software systems for aeronautics (from cockpits to control towers). This context stands out by the need for certification, such as DO-178 or ED-12. Today, formal methods are pushed forward, as one of the best tools to achieve the verification and validation of properties, leading to the certification of these systems. Interactive systems are reactive computer systems that process information from their environment and produce a representation of their internal state. They offer new rich interfaces with sophisticated interactions. Their certification is a challenge, because the validation is often a human based process since traditional formal tools are not always suitable to the verification of graphical properties in particular.In this paper, we explore the scientific work that has been done in formal methods for interactive systems over the last decade, in a systematic study of publications in the International Workshop on Formal Methods for Interactive Systems. We describe an analytical framework that we apply to classify the studied work into classes of properties and used formalisms. We then discuss the emerging findings, mainly the lack of papers addressing the formal specification or validation of perceptibility properties. We conclude with an overview of our future work in this area.

July, 2020.; International audience; We present a semi-supervised ensemble clustering framework for identifying relevant multi-level clusters, regarding application objectives, in large datasets and mapping them to application classes for predicting the class of new instances. This framework extends the MultiCons closed sets based multiple consensus clustering approach but can easily be adapted to other ensemble clustering approaches. It was developed to optimize theAmadeus S.A.S revenue accounting workflow management. Revenue accounting in travel industry is a complex task when travels include several transportations, with associated services, performed by distinct operators and on geographical areas with different taxes and currencies for example. Preliminary results show the relevance of the proposed approach for the automation of workflow anomaly corrections.

Abstract

International audience; The demand for rapid diagnostic in developing countries has recently increased, in part due to growing populations, emerging diseases, and rise in healthcare cost. Use of low-cost lateral flow/dipstick devices, especially paper-based ones, has increased. In most of the developing world, however, biomedical waste management systems either do not exist or are poor, as such, used devices either get incinerated or dumped alongside household trash. The plastic casing that is often used to hold the test strip, while useful before the test, also slows the biodegradation of the used contaminated devices. We demonstrate that by replacing the plastic casing with paper encasements, we promote biodegradation of these devices while reducing its total weight, making their transport and packaging more compact and more environmentally friendly—hence qualifying this simple modification as green engineering. The ability to use paper casing has the added advantage that devices can be readily assembled locally with ease and without need for sophisticated manufacturing tools as needed with the plastic casings.

International audience; With the increasing development of handheld devices, Location Based Services (LBSs) became very popular in facilitating users' daily life with a broad range of applications (e.g. traffic monitoring, geo-located search, geo-gaming). However , several studies have shown that the collected mobility data may reveal sensitive information about end-users such as their home and workplaces, their gender, political, religious or sexual preferences. To overcome these threats, many Location Privacy Protection Mechanisms (LPPMs) were proposed in the literature. While the existing LPPMs try to protect most of the users in mobility datasets, there is usually a subset of users who are not protected by any of the existing LPPMs. By analogy to medical research, there are orphan diseases, for which the medical community is still looking for a remedy. In this paper, we present MooD, a fine-grained multi-LPPM user-centric solution whose main objective is to find a treatment to mobile users' orphan disease by protecting them from re-identification attacks. Our experiments are conducted on four real world datasets. The results show that MooD outperforms its competitors, and the amount of user mobility data it is able to protect is in the range between 97.5% to 100% on the various datasets. Abstract

International audience; Sentiment analysis has grown to become increasingly important for companies to more accurately understand customer/supplier sentiments about their processes/products and services, and predict customer churn. In particular, existing sentiment analysis aims to better understand their customer’s or supplier’s emotions which are essentially the affirmative, negative, and neutral views of users on tangible or intangible entities e.g., products or services. One of the most prevalent sources to analyse these sentiments is Twitter. Unfortunately, however, existing sentiment analysis techniques suffer from three serious shortcomings: (1) they have problems to effectively deal with streaming data as they can merely exploit (Twitter) hashtags, and (2) neglect the context of Tweets. In this paper, we present SANA: a context-aware solution for dealing with streaming (Twitter) data, analysing this data on the fly taking into account context and more comprehensive semantics of Tweets, and dynamically monitoring and visualising trends in sentiments through dashboarding and query facilities.

International audience; A growing fraction of the papers published by CCR and at SIGCOMM-sponsored conferences include artifacts such as software or datasets. Besides CCR, these artifacts were rarely evaluated. During the last months of 2018, we organised two different Artifacts Evaluation Committees to which authors could submit the artifacts of their papers for evaluation. The first one evaluated the papers accepted by Conext’18 shortly after the TPC decision. It assigned ACM reproducibility badges to 12 different papers. The second one evaluated papers accepted by CCR and any SIGCOMM-sponsored conference. 28 papers received ACM reproducibility badges. We report on the results of a short survey among artifacts authors and reviewers and provide some suggestions for future artifacts evaluations.

Abstract

International audience; Photographic paper texture characterization constitutes a challenging image processing task and an important stake both for manufacturers and art museums. The present contribution shows how the Hyperbolic Wavelet Transform, thanks to its joint multiscale and anisotropie nature, permits to achieve an accurate photographic paper texture analysis and characterization. A cepstral-type distance, constructed on the coefficients of the Hyperbolic Wavelet Transform, is then used to measure similarity between pairs of paper textures. Spectral clustering followed by Ascendant Hierarchical Clustering applied to the similarity matrix enables an unsupervised classification of photographic paper sheets. This methodology is applied to a test dataset made available in the framework of the Historic Photographic Paper Classification Challenge. The relevance of the proposed texture characterization and classification procedure is assessed by comparisons against the database documentation provided by experts.

Abstract

National audience; Interactive paper technologies offer new opportunities for supporting the highly individual practices of creative artists, such as contemporary music composers, who express and explore their ideas on both paper and the computer. We introduce PaperComposer, a graphical interface builder that allows users to create a personalized interactive paper interface that they can connect to their own computer-based musical data. We also present an API that facilitates the development of interactive paper components for PaperComposer. We describe one public demonstration of a novel musical interface designed for children and our collaborations with composers to create two novel interactive music interfaces that reflected their individual composition styles.

Abstract

This paper introduces the concept of using programmers as root of trust, for bare metal terminals, such as blockchain crypto terminals. When electronics devices are delivered through non trusted supply chains, there is a risk of malware injection. Bare metal architecture defeats these threats, but raises the issue of programmer integrity insurance. We propose to use innovative integrity probe software whose goal is to detect malicious bootloader thanks to which they are downloaded in the programmer memory.

Abstract

International audience; Prototyping interactive objects with personal fabrication tools like 3D printers requires the maker to create subsequent design artifacts from scratch which produces unnecessary waste and does not allow to reuse functional components. We present Interactive Tangrami, paper-folded and reusable building blocks (Tangramis) that can contain various sensor input and visual output capabilities. We propose a digital design toolkit that lets the user plan the shape and functionality of a design piece. The software manages the communication to the physical artifact and streams the interaction data via the Open Sound protocol (OSC) to an application prototyping system (e.g. MaxMSP). The building blocks are fabricated digitally with a rapid and inexpensive ink-jet printing method. Our systems allows to prototype physical user interfaces within minutes and without knowledge of the underlying technologies. We demo its usefulness with two application examples.

International audience; Lateral flow immunoassays provide low cost, fast, portable and simple to use devices, with yes/no answers seen by the naked eye, that has found applications in agriculture, biomedicine, the environment, and food industries. Making these quantitative, via electrochemical or optical approaches, is the present day challenge, with a vision that one day, these will be connected to smartphone technologies, which exhibit a promising digital platform for point‐of‐care diagnostics, mobile healthcare and bioanalytical needs. These devices are fully automated and equipped with a high resolution camera, a powerful processor with high storage capacity, wireless connectivity, real‐time geo‐tagging, secure data management, and cloud computing.

Abstract

One important feature required by autonomous vehicles is the ability to perform a localization task in order to navigate in both known (urban, suburban, and highways) and unknown environments. Instead of relying on LIDAR technology, we propose to leverage a bio-inspired algorithm relying on more conventional cameras and a large neural network (NN) [2]. Yet, this approach must be able to scale. We propose to investigate the development of an FPGA-based solution. Due to the size of NN, dynamic partial reconfiguration will be required, and an efficient (software-based) scheduler must place the hardware tasks on multiple FPGA chip. We intend to implement this algorithm using a unique custom board, Wizarde, which embeds a 3 × 3 matrix of Zynq SoCs with high-end FPGAs to prototype a possible solution.

Part 1: Long and Short Papers (Continued); International audience; For expert interfaces, it is not obvious whether providing multiple modes of interaction, each tuned to different sub-tasks, leads to a better user experience than providing a more limited set. In this paper, we investigate this question in the context of air traffic control. We present and analyze an augmented flight strip board offering several forms of interaction, including touch, digital pen and physical paper objects. We explore the technical challenges of adding finger detection to such a flight strip board and evaluate how expert air traffic controllers interact with the resulting system. We find that users are able to quickly adapt to the wide range of offered modalities. Users were not overburden by the choice of different modalities, and did not find it difficult to determine the appropriate modality to use for each interaction.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we demonstrate for the first time that a 19-bit chipless tag based on a paper substrate can be realized using the flexography technique, which is an industrial high-speed printing process. The chipless tag is able to operate within the ultra-wide band (UWB) and has a reasonable size ( 7×3 cm 2) compared to state-of-the-art versions. Thus, it is possible to use this design for various identification applications that require a low unit cost of tags. Both the simulation and measurement results are shown, and performance comparisons are provided between several realization processes, such as classical chemical etching, flexography printing, and catalyst inkjet printing.

High frequency paper-based electronics is developing fast, with smart yet low cost applications in view. However, the dielectric losses of paper remain a difficult hurdle to overcome. First, the literature on the topic is reviewed and the contributions from moisture, air, mineral filler, and wood constituents to dielectric losses are highlighted. Then, the guidelines for future research are defined, including the need for systematic comparisons in controlled moisture conditions. In an effort to produce low loss materials for paper-based electronics, it is proposed here to impregnate paper with a low loss substance, after removing residual water.

Abstract

International audience; In a context of the end of Moore's law, energy dissipation constitutes a real challenge. Among the new energy efficient paradigms for data processing, bio-inspired computing is very promising, moreover introducing cognitive characteristics. As applications at very high scale are addressed, the size and energy dissipation of both the neuron and synapse cells needs to be minimized. In this context, this paper presents the design of an original artificial neuron, using standard 65nm CMOS technology with optimized energy efficiency and its application in basic neural networks. By recalling brain and neuron features, it is shown why neuron energy efficiency is roughly limited to 1 pJ/spike in biological neuron. Biological and artificial neurons features are carefully compared, highlighting the importance of downscaling. The artificial neuron circuit presented was designed to exhibit wide band spiking frequencies, targeting large scale bio-inspired information processing applications. The most important feature of the fabricated circuits is the neuron energy efficiency in the few fJ/spike range, which improves prior state-of-the-art by two to three orders of magnitude. This performance is achieved by minimizing two key parameters: the supply voltage and the related membrane capacitance. Meanwhile, the obtained standby power at a resting output does not exceed tens of picowatts. The circuit is sized to 35 mu m(2), reaching a spiking output frequency of 26kHz. It is then shown how this artificial technology has already been used for two applications: (i) emulation of bursting mode, important in brain stimulation context or for robotics (locomotion rhythm), (ii) stochastic resonance application, useful to detect an electrical signal buried in noise, phenomena exploited in nature by species. These results already allow envisioning the development of highly integrated neuro-processors (vision application). A variant circuit (biomimetic) could be used for robotics, neuroscience or medical applications.

Abstract

International audience; On Android, installing an application implies accepting the permissions it requests, and these permissions are then enforced at runtime. In this work, we focus on the privacy implications of the ACCESS_WIFI_STATE permission. For this purpose, we analyzed permissions of the 2700 most popular applications on Google Play and found that the ACCESS_WIFI_STATE permission is used by 41% of them. We then performed a static analysis of 998 applications requesting this permission and based on the results, chose 88 applications for dynamic analysis. Our analyses reveal that this permission is already used by some companies to collect user Personally Identifiable Information (PII). We also conducted an online survey to study users' perception of the privacy risks associated with this permission. This survey shows that users largely underestimate the privacy implications of this permission. As this permission is very common, most users are therefore potentially at risk.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents S-Notebook, a tool that makes it possible to "extend" mobile devices with augmented paper. Paper is used to overcome the physical limitations of mobile devices by offering ad- ditional space to annotate digital files and to easily create relation- ships between them. S-Notebook allows users to link paper annota- tions or drawings to anchors in digital files without having to learn pre-defined pen gestures. The systems stores meta data such as spa- tial or temporal location of anchors in the document as well as the zoom level of the view. Tapping on notes with the digital pen make appear the corresponding documents as displayed when the notes were taken. A given piece of augmented paper can contain notes as- sociated to several documents, possibliy at several locations. The annotation space can thus serve as a simple way to relate various pieces of one or several digital documents between them. When the user shares his notes, the piece of paper becomes a tangible to- ken that virtually contains digital information.

[Departement_IRSTEA]Ecotechnologies [TR1_IRSTEA]TED [Axe_IRSTEA]Co TED-SOWASTE et TED-EPURE; International audience; Increasingly stringent effluent limits and an expanding scope of model system boundaries beyond activated sludge has led to new modelling objectives and consequently to new and often more detailed modelling concepts. Nearly three decades after the publication of Activated Sludge Model No1 (ASM1), the authors believe it is time to re-evaluate wastewater characterisation procedures and targets. The present position paper gives a brief overview of state-of-the-art methods and discusses newly developed measurement techniques on a conceptual level. Potential future paths are presented including on-line instrumentation, promising measuring techniques, and mathematical solutions to fractionation problems. This is accompanied by a discussion on standardisation needs to increase modelling efficiency in our industry.

Abstract

International audience; We present the results of a comprehensive multi-pass analysis of visualization paper keywords supplied by authors for their papers published in the IEEE Visualization conference series (now called IEEE VIS) between 1990–2015. From this analysis we derived a set of visualization topics that we discuss in the context of the current taxonomy that is used to categorize papers and assign reviewers in the IEEE VIS reviewing process. We point out missing and overemphasized topics in the current taxonomy and start a discussion on the importance of establishing common visualization terminology. Our analysis of research topics in visualization can, thus, serve as a starting point to (a) help create a common vocabulary to improve communication among different visualization subgroups , (b) facilitate the process of understanding differences and commonalities of the various research sub-fields in visualization, (c) provide an understanding of emerging new research trends, (d) facilitate the crucial step of finding the right reviewers for research submissions, and (e) it can eventually lead to a comprehensive taxonomy of visualization research. One additional tangible outcome of our work is an online query tool (http://keyvis.org/) that allows visualization researchers to easily browse the 3 952 keywords used for IEEE VIS papers since 1990 to find related work or make informed keyword choices.

Abstract

International audience; Languages for embedded systems ensure predictable timing behavior by specifying constraints based on either data streaming or reactive control models of computation. Moreover, various toolsets facilitate the incremental integration of application functionalities and the system design by evolutionary refinement and model-based code generation. Modern embedded systems involve various sources of interference in shared resources (e.g. multicores) and advanced real-time constraints , such as mixed-criticality levels. A sufficiently expressive model-ing approach for complex dependency patterns between real-time tasks is needed along with a formal analysis of models for runtime resource managers with timing constraints. Our approach utilizes a model of computation , called Fixed-Priority Process Networks, which ensures functional determinism by unifying streaming and reactive control within a timed automata framework. The tool flow extends the open source TASTE tool-suite with model transformations to the BIP language and code generation tools. We outline the use of our flow on the design of a spacecraft on-board application running on a quad-core LEON4FT processor.

Abstract

We compared the effects of two media (paper vs. computer) on reading comprehension and memorization among students in their third or fourth year of secondary school. To assess comprehension, we constructed and validated a text with a carefully controlled hierarchical structure, accompanied by a questionnaire containing three types of questions (surface, semantic, inference). Memory of the text was assessed with a test based on the Remember-Know (R/K) paradigm. The results of the comprehension and R/K tests indicated that there was no difference between the two media. Regardless of medium, surface comprehension was better than either semantic or inference comprehension. The R/K test indicated that memorization was better for the surface elements of the text (more R than K responses). In conclusion, overall results show that if we fulfil?all the conditions of paper-based versus computerized presentation (text structure, presentation on a single page, screen size, several types of questions measuring comprehension and memory performances), reading performances are not significantly different. The objective was to compare reading from paper versus computers.We developed a one-page text with a specific structure.We measured comprehension and memorization from paper and computer.Results did not reveal any difference between paper and computer.

Abstract

International audience; Each domain, along with its knowledge base, changes over time and every timeframe is centered on specific topics that emerge from different ongoing research projects. As searching for relevant resources is a time-consuming process, the automatic extraction of the most important and relevant articles from a domain becomes essential in supporting researchers in their day-today activities. The proposed analysis extends other previous researches focused on extracting co-citations between the papers, with the purpose of comparing their overall importance within the domain from a semantic perspective. Our method focuses on the semantic analysis of paper abstracts by using Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques such as Latent Semantic Analysis, Latent Dirichlet Allocation or specific ontology distances, i.e., WordNet. Moreover, the defined mechanisms are enforced on two different subdomains from the corpora generated around the keywords " e-learning " and " computer ". Graph visual representations are used to highlight the keywords of each subdomain, links among concepts and between articles, as well as specific document similarity views, or scores reflecting the keyword-abstract overlaps. In the end, conclusions and future improvements are presented, emphasizing nevertheless the key elements of our research support framework.

Abstract

Smart Cameras associate image sensing and processing in a unique device. Within smart cameras, embedded systems are deployed to extract high level image features with pixel-wise computationally intensive operations. Given the limited computational capabilities of embedded devices, Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) architectures are well suited to speed-up the processing performance. Such architectures are able to process high throughput data while providing a modular and flexible approach. However, one of the biggest issues in FPGA-based systems is the important development time compared to conventional computer vision design techniques.Device programmability and algorithm transcription become a major concern for FPGA developers. Low-level programming languages such as VHDL or Verilog constrain designers of computer vision systems to manage by themselves the whole internal circuitry (communication drivers, modules synchronization, interfaces...) of their system. In a context of growing productivity gaps, the reduction of system development time is an ever greater concern. A higher level description has high potential to increase design added value by abstracting away low-level hardware considerations.

International audience; The need for safety and comfort in vehicular environments has led to a lot of research in vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANET), ranging from vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communications to security. As regards the latter aspect, mostly the focus has been on resorting to public key infrastructure (PKI) and its related concepts. Moreover, methods used to detect the most feared security attacks are based almost exclusively on the use of physical characteristics as well as PKI concepts or both. However with emerging technologies that enable connecting a vehicle to external resources, VANET is evolving, thus inheriting security threats that are common place in conventional IT systems. Therefore, as it is shown in the paper, VANET security must go beyond cryptographic-centric mechanisms that are commonly used for providing data security in wireless environment

Abstract

The new ubiquitous interaction methods change people's life and facilitate their tasks in everyday life and in the workplace, enabling people to access their personal data as well as public resources at any time and in any place. We found two solutions to enable ubiquitous interaction and put a stop to the limits imposed by the desktop mode: namely nomadism and mobility. Based on these two solutions, we have proposed three interfaces (Zhou et al. in HCI international 2011: human---computer interaction. Interaction techniques and environments, Springer, Berlin, pp 500---509, 2011): in-environment interface (IEI), environment dependent interface (EDI), and environment independent interface (EII). In this paper, we first discuss an overview of IEI, EDI, and EII, before excluding IEI and focusing on EDI and EII, their background, and distinct characteristics. We also propose a continuum from physical paper-based interface to digital projected interface in relation with EDI and EII. Then, to validate EDI and EII concepts, we design and implement a MobilePaperAccess system, which is a wearable camera-glasses system with paper-based interface and original input techniques allowing mobile interaction. Furthermore, we discuss the evaluation of the MobilePaperAccess system; we compare two interfaces (EDI and EII) and three input techniques (finger input, mask input, and page input) to test the feasibility and usability of this system. Both the quantitative and qualitative results are reported and discussed. Finally, we provide the prospects and our future work for improving the current approaches.

Abstract

International audience; Mobile phone camera-based document video scan- ning is an interesting research problem which has entered into a new era with the emergence of widely used, processing capable and motion sensors equipped smartphones. We present our ongoing research on mobile phone camera-based document image mosaic reconstruction method for video scanning of paper documents. In this work, we have optimized the classic keypoint feature descriptor based image registration method, by employing the accelerometer and gyroscope sensor data. Experimental results are evaluated using optical character recognition (OCR) on the reconstructed mosaic from mobile phone camera-based video scanning of paper documents.

Abstract

International audience; Standard physical pen-and-paper creation and computer graphics tools tend to evolve in separate tracks. In this paper, we propose a new interface, PapARt, that bridges the gap between these two worlds. We developed a system that allow users to visualize, ma- nipulate and edit a 3D scene projected onto a paper sheet. Using multitouch and tangible interfaces, users can directly interact with the 3D scene to prepare their drawings. Then, thanks to the pro- jection of the 3D scene directly on the final surface medium, they can draw using standard tools while relying on the underlying 3D scene. Hence, users benefit from both the power of interactive 3D graphics and fast and easy interaction metaphors, while keeping a direct link with the physical material. PapARt has been tested dur- ing a large scale exhibition for general public. Such an interface, which combines computer-assisted drawing and free form user ex- pressiveness on a standard sheet of paper, opens new perspectives for enhancing user creation.

Abstract

International audience; The use of computers to deliver course-related materials is rapidly expanding in most universities. Yet the effects of computer vs. printed delivery modes on students' performance and motivation are not yet fully known. We compared the impacts of Web vs. paper to deliver practice quizzes that require information search in lecture notes. Hundred and twenty two undergraduate students used either a web site or printed documents to answer 18 mathematics questions during a tutored session. A revised Web site was designed based on ergonomic criteria, to test the hypothesis that improved usability would decrease time spent on the task, the number of pages consulted, and students' perceived cognitive load. The group working with printed documents had the highest performance. Furthermore, students perceived the paper materials as less effortful to read, and expressed preference for printing lecture notes and questions. However, students appreciated having a Web site available. No differences were found between the two sites. We conclude that Web delivery imposed higher perceived cognitive load due to the need to read lengthy documents. We suggest possible ways to improve Web-based practice materials, such as simultaneous display of questions and lecture notes.; Le recours aux documents numériques pour les supports de cours s'accroît dans les universités. Mais les effets sur les performances des étudiants et leur motivation ne sont pas encore bien connus. Nous comparons le support papier au support numérique (site web) dans le cas de questionnaires à choix multiples(QCM) qui nécessitent de se référer aux supports de cours. L'expérimentation a porté sur 122 étudiants et 18 questions. Le site web a été reconfiguré sur des bases ergonomiques pour tester l'hypothèse qu'une meilleure présentation diminuait le temps passé sur une tâche, le nombre de pages consultées et la surcharge cognitive perçue par les étudiants. Le groupe qui utilisait le support papier a les meilleures performances. De plus, les étudiants perçoivent le support papier plus aisé à lire et expriment des préférences pour des questionnaires et des supports imprimés. Aucune différence n'est sensible entre les groupes qui utilisent la première ou la deuxième version du site. Nous concluons que le support numérique impose une charge cognitive supérieure pour lire des longs documents. Nous proposons des idées d'amélioration comme l'affichage simultané des questions et des documents

Abstract

To develop quality software and systems, both functional and non-functional requirements need to be taken into account at the highest level of abstraction. However the issue of relationships between non-functional requirements and functional requirements has been rarely addressed. In this article, we outline an extension of the SysML requirements meta-model with relevant concepts of commonly used goal-oriented requirements engineering approaches. The main contribution of our approach is to analyse and describe the impact of non-functional requirements on functional requirements.

Abstract

International audience; Two kinds of bibliographic tools are used to retrieve scientific publications and make them available online. For one kind, access is free as they store information made publicly available online. For the other kind, access fees are required as they are compiled on information provided by the major publishers of scientific literature. The former can easily be interfered with, but it is generally assumed that the latter guarantee the integrity of the data they sell. Unfortunately, duplicate and fake publications are appearing in scientific conferences and, as a result, in the bibliographic services. We demonstrate a software method of detecting these duplicate and fake publications. Both the free services (such as Google Scholar and DBLP) and the charged-for services (such as IEEE Xplore) accept and index these publications.

Abstract

This paper presents a knowledge-based methodology dedicated to automate the specification of virtual organization collaborative processes. Our approach takes as input knowledge concerning collaboration coming from involved organizations and produces as output a BPMN compliant process. The collaborative network ontology consists of (i) collaboration attributes, (ii) description of participants and (iii) collaborative processes inspired from the enterprise Process Handbook (MIT). This OWL ontology coupled with a reasoning engine will be used by a collaboration aided design tool (CDT) provided by EBM WebSourcing.
