Search

Covering the full texts of all papers published in MDPI's Remote Sensing between 2009 and 2021, in-depth scientometric analyses were conducted. Trends in publications show an increase in the overall number of papers. A relative increase in papers using SAR sensors and a relative decrease in papers using optical remote sensing can also be seen. The full-text analyses reveal distinctive styles and writing patterns for papers from different sub-fields of remote sensing and for different countries and even cities. While a slight increase in the readability of abstracts is detected over time, the overall readability of papers is decreasing. Institutional co-authorship analysis reveals the ongoing 'scientific decoupling' between China and the USA in remote sensing. Due to budget and sensor technology constraints, a single sensor cannot simultaneously provide observational images with both a high spatial and temporal resolution. To solve the above problem, the spatiotemporal fusion (STF) method was proposed and proved to be an indispensable tool for monitoring land surface dynamics. There are relatively few systematic reviews of the STF method. Bibliometrics is a valuable method for analyzing the scientific literature, but it has not yet been applied to the comprehensive analysis of the STF method. Therefore, in this paper, we use bibliometrics and scientific mapping to analyze the 2967 citation data from the Web of Science from 1991 to 2023 in a metrological manner, covering the themes of STF, data fusion, multi-temporal analysis, and spatial analysis. The results of the literature analysis reveal that the number of articles displays a slow to rapid increase during the study period, but decreases significantly in 2023. Research institutions in China (1059 papers) and the United States (432 papers) are the top two contributors in the field. The keywords "Sentinel", "deep learning" (DL), and "LSTM" (Long Short-Term Memory) appeared most frequently in the past three years. In the future, remote sensing spatiotemporal fusion research can address more of the limitations of heterogeneous landscapes and climatic conditions to improve fused images' accuracy. Vegetation indices provide information for various precision-agriculture practices, by providing quantitative data about crop growth and health. To provide a concise and up-to-date review of vegetation indices in precision agriculture, this study focused on the major vegetation indices with the criterion of their frequency in scientific papers indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) since 2000. Based on the scientific papers with the topic of "precision agriculture" combined with "vegetation index", this study found that the United States and China are global leaders in total precision-agriculture research and the application of vegetation indices, while the analysis adjusted for the country area showed much more homogenous global development of vegetation indices in precision agriculture. Among these studies, vegetation indices based on the multispectral sensor are much more frequently adopted in scientific studies than their low-cost alternatives based on the RGB sensor. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was determined as the dominant vegetation index, with a total of 2200 studies since the year 2000. With the existence of vegetation indices that improved the shortcomings of NDVI, such as enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and soil-adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), this study recognized their potential for enabling superior results to those of NDVI in future studies. Most Penman-Monteith-Leuning (PML) evapotranspiration (ET) modeling studies are dominated by consideration of meteorological, energy, and land use information, etc., but the dynamic coupling of soil moisture content (SM), especially in terms of improving accuracy through assimilation, lacks sufficient attention. This paper proposes a research framework for the dynamic coupling simulation of PML model and SM based on data assimilation, i.e., the remote sensing monitored SM is combined with soil evaporation of PML to obtain high-precision time-continuous SM data through data assimilation; simultaneously, dynamical soil evaporation coefficients are generated based on the assimilated SM to improve the simulation accuracy of the PML model. The new scheme was validated at a typical irrigation zone in north China and showed obvious improvements in both SM and ET simulations. Moreover, the effect of the assimilation of SM on the simulation accuracy of ET for different crop growth periods is further analyzed. The point cloud segmentation method plays an important role in practical applications, such as remote sensing, mobile robots, and 3D modeling. However, there are still some limitations to the current point cloud data segmentation method when applied to large-scale scenes. Therefore, this paper proposes an adaptive clustering segmentation method. In this method, the threshold for clustering points within the point cloud is calculated using the characteristic parameters of adjacent points. After completing the preliminary segmentation of the point cloud, the segmentation results are further refined according to the standard deviation of the cluster points. Then, the cluster points whose number does not meet the conditions are further segmented, and, finally, scene point cloud data segmentation is realized. To test the superiority of this method, this study was based on point cloud data from a park in Guilin, Guangxi, China. The experimental results showed that this method is more practical and efficient than other methods, and it can effectively segment all ground objects and ground point cloud data in a scene. Compared with other segmentation methods that are easily affected by parameters, this method has strong robustness. In order to verify the universality of the method proposed in this paper, we test a public data set provided by ISPRS. Poverty has always been a global concern that has restricted human development. The first goal (SDG 1) of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to eliminate all forms of poverty all over the world. The establishment of a scientific and effective localized SDG 1 evaluation and monitoring method is the key to achieving SDG 1. This paper proposes SDG 1 China district and county-level localization evaluation method based on multi-source remote sensing data for the United Nations Sustainable Development Framework. The temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of China's poverty areas and their SDG 1 evaluation values in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018 have been analyzed. Based on the SDGs global indicator framework, this paper first constructed SDG 1 China's district and county localization indicator system and then extracted multidimensional feature factors from nighttime light images, land cover data, and digital elevation model data. Secondly, we establish SDG 1 China's localized partial least squares estimation model and SDG 1 China's localized machine learning estimation model. Finally, we analyze and verify the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of China's poverty areas and counties and their SDG 1 evaluation values. The results show that SDG 1 China's district and county localization indicator system proposed in this study and SDG 1 China's localized partial least squares estimation model can better reflect the poverty level of China's districts and counties. The estimated model R2 is 0.65, which can identify 72.77% of China's national poverty counties. From 2012 to 2018, the spatial distribution pattern of SDG evaluation values in China's districts and counties is that the SDG evaluation values gradually increase from western China to eastern China. In addition, the average SDG 1 evaluation value of China's districts and counties increased by 23% from 2012 to 2018. Timely and accurate observations of harmful algal blooms dynamics help to coordinate coastal protection and reduce the damage in advance. To date, predicting changes in the spatial distribution of algal blooms has been challenging due to the lack of suitable tools. The paper proposes that the development and disappearance of algal bloom can be monitored by satellite remote sensing in a large area from the diurnal variation of chlorophyll a. In this paper, 32 pairs of observed data in 2011–2020 showed that it was most appropriate to outline the areas where the diurnal variation (the standard deviation calculated from the daily chlorophyll a) in chlorophyll a was more than 2.2 mg/m3 . Among them, 30 pairs of data showed that the high chlorophyll a diurnal variation could predict the growth of the algal bloom in the next days. In these events, the median area difference between the two spatial distributions was -0.08%. When there was a high diurnal variation in chlorophyll a in the area adjacent to where algal bloom was occurred, a new algal bloom region was likely to spread in subsequent days. Pine wilt disease (PWD) is a forest disease characterized by rapid spread and extremely high lethality, posing a serious threat to the ecological security of China's forests and causing significant economic losses in forestry. Given the extensive forestry area, limited personnel for inspection and monitoring, and high costs, utilizing UAV-based remote sensing monitoring for diseased trees represents an effective approach for controlling the spread of PWD. However, due to the small target size and uneven scale of pine wilt disease, as well as the limitations of real-time detection by drones, traditional disease tree detection algorithms based on RGB remote sensing images do not achieve an optimal balance among accuracy, detection speed, and model complexity due to real-time detection limitations. Consequently, this paper proposes Light-ViTeYOLO, a lightweight pine wilt disease detection method based on Vision Transformer-enhanced YOLO (You Only Look Once). A novel lightweight multi-scale attention module is introduced to construct an EfficientViT feature extraction network for global receptive field and multi-scale learning. A novel neck network, CACSNet(Content-Aware Cross-Scale bidirectional fusion neck network), is designed to enhance the detection of diseased trees at single granularity, and the loss function is optimized to improve localization accuracy. The algorithm effectively reduces the number of parameters and giga floating-point operations per second (GFLOPs) of the detection model while enhancing overall detection performance. Experimental results demonstrate that compared with other baseline algorithms, Light-ViTeYOLO proposed in this paper has the least parameter and computational complexity among related algorithms, with 3.89 MFLOPs and 7.4 GFLOPs, respectively. The FPS rate is 57.9 (frames/s), which is better than the original YOLOv5. Meanwhile, its mAP@0.5:0.95 is the best among the baseline algorithms, and the recall and mAP@0.5 slightly decrease. Our Light-ViTeYOLO is the first lightweight method specifically designed for detecting pine wilt disease. This review will serve as an entry point for international researchers who would like to tap into the vast scientific potential of Chinese-language literature on oceanic fronts. We focused on observational physical oceanography studies of marine fronts. A thorough bibliographic search netted 95 papers published in 1982–2023, with a sharp increase in the total number of papers from 2006–2010 to 2011–2015, when this number almost tripled. This trend continued unabated through the early 2020s. The sharp increase in Chinese-language publications preceded by several years a rapid increase in English-language publications in the same field. Regionally, the overwhelming majority of papers is focused on the China Seas, particularly the East China Seas and northern South China Sea. Elsewhere, a number of papers were dedicated to the Southern Ocean and North Atlantic. Thematically, papers on remote sensing of ocean fronts dominate the literature, with special attention to the development of front-detection algorithms that can be applied to satellite data on sea surface temperature, salinity, chlorophyll, and sea level anomaly. Numerous papers on marine fronts in the China Seas present important results that have to be considered by international researchers. Tree detection and canopy area measurement are important and difficult tasks in forest inventory, which are important for understanding forest stand structure. This study utilized remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) aerial photography technology to collect remote sensing images of forests in Xiong County, China, creating a dataset comprising 1200 images of six tree species. Based on this dataset, the paper proposes an optimized model, Att-Mask R-CNN, for canopy detection and segmentation. Att-Mask R-CNN outperforms the original models (Mask R-CNN and MS R-CNN) by achieving 65.29% mean average precision for detection, 80.44% mean intersection over union for segmentation, and 90.67% overall recognition rate for the six tree species. In addition, a pixel statistics method based on segmentation masks is introduced for estimating the vertical projected area of individual tree crowns, and comparisons between the measured and predicted vertical projected area of the crowns of six tree species (100 trees of each class) show an overall goodness-of-fit R2 of 85% and a relative root-mean-square error rRMSE of 12.81%. By using remote sensing images from RPAs and optimizing existing deep learning models, the detection and segmentation of individual tree canopies can be achieved, resulting in a more accurate understanding of forest structure, which provides scientific support for forest management and resource monitoring. Drylands are vast and face threats from climate change and human activities. Traditional reviews cannot capture interdisciplinary knowledge, but bibliometric analysis provides valuable insights. Our study conducted bibliometric research of scientific production on climate change and land degradation in drylands using remote sensing. We examined 1527 Scopus-indexed publications to identify geographic and thematic hotspots, extracting leading authors, journals, and institutions. China leads in publications, followed by the US, Germany, and Australia. The US has the highest citation count. Collaboration networks involve the US, China, and European countries. There has been an exponential increase in remote sensing of land degradation in drylands (RSLDD) publications since 2011. Key journals include "International Journal of Remote Sensing" and "Remote Sensing of Environment". The analysis highlights the growing interest in the field, driven by Australia, the US, and China. Key areas of study are vegetation dynamics and land use change. Future perspectives for this scientific field involve promoting collaboration and exploring emerging technologies for comprehensive land degradation and desertification research. In the current context of carbon neutrality, afforestation is an effective means of absorbing carbon dioxide. Stock can be used not only as an economic value index of forest wood resources but also as an important index of biomass and carbon storage estimation in forest emission reduction project evaluation. In this paper, we propose a data-driven machine learning framework and method for predicting plantation stock based on airborne LiDAR + satellite remote sensing, and carried out experimental verification at the site of the National Forest emission reduction project in Southern China. We used step-up regression and random forest (RF) to screen LiDAR and Landsat 8 OLI multispectral indicators suitable for the prediction of plantation stock, and constructed a plantation stock model based on machine learning (support vector machine regression, RF regression). Our method is compared with traditional statistical methods (stepwise regression and partial least squares regression). Through the verification of 57 plantation field survey data, the accuracy of the stand estimation model constructed using the RF method is generally better (ΔR2 = 0.01~0.27, ΔRMSE = 1.88~13.77 m3·hm−2, ΔMAE = 1.17~13.57 m3·hm−2). The model evaluation accuracy based on machine learning is higher than that of the traditional statistical method, and the fitting R2 is greater than 0.91, while the fitting R2 of the traditional statistical method is 0.85. The best fitting models were all support vector regression models. The combination of UAV point clouds and satellite multi-spectral images has the best modeling effect, followed by LiDAR point clouds and Landsat 8. At present, this method is only applicable to artificial forests; further verification is needed for natural forests. In the future, the density and quality of higher clouds could be increased. The validity and accuracy of the method were further verified. This paper provides a method for predicting the accumulation of typical Chinese plantations at the forest farm scale based on the "airborne LiDAR + satellite remote sensing" data-driven machine learning modeling, which has potential application value for the current carbon neutrality goal of the southern plantation forest emission reduction project. Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) has grown rapidly in China since its introduction in 1979, showing the trend of alien species invasion, which has seriously affected the ecosystem balance of coastal wetlands. The temporal and spatial expansion law of S. alterniflora can be obtained through remote sensing monitoring, which can provide a reference and basis for S. alterniflora management. This paper presents a method for extracting and mapping S. alterniflora based on phenological characteristics. The coastal areas of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration are selected as the research area, and the Landsat time series data from 1990 to 2022 on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform are used to support the experiment in this paper. Firstly, the possible growing area of S. alterniflora was extracted using the normalized differential moisture index (NDMI), normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI), and normalized differential water index (NDWI); Then, the time series curve characterizing the phenological characteristics of vegetation was constructed using the vegetation index to determine the difference phase of phenological characteristics between S. alterniflora and other vegetation. Finally, a decision tree was constructed based on the phenological feature difference phase data to extract S. alterniflora, and it is applied to the analysis of temporal and spatial changes of S. alterniflora in the study area from 1990 to 2022. The results show that the area of S. alterniflora increased from ~1426 ha in 1990 to ~44,508 ha in 2022. However, the area of S. alterniflora began to show negative growth in 2015 due to the construction of nature reserves and ecological management. The results of correlation analysis showed that the growth of C. japonicum was significantly affected by temperature stress and weakly affected by precipitation. This study verified that Landsat time series images can effectively extract vegetation phenological information, which has strong feasibility for extraction and dynamic monitoring of S. alterniflora and provides technical support for the management and monitoring of invasive plants in coastal wetlands. Using deep learning in remote sensing interpretation could reduce a lot of human and material costs. Semantic segmentation is the main method for this task. It can automatically outline the objects and it has recently achieved great success in remote sensing images. However, in the appliance of remote sensing interpretation, the accuracy of contour largely determines the evaluation of remote sensing interpretation. Though the current loss functions reflect the segmentation performance, they could not guide the model to optimize itself toward a more precise contour. This paper proposed an exactly defined contour loss (CL) for remote sensing interpretation with Residual Attention U-Net (RA U-Net) as the main framework. The RA U-Net uses the residual attention module as the skip connection layer. It enhances the judgment of U-Net. In CL, image processing methods are used to extract the contours of the foreground. And elements-sum and elements-subtract operations are used to transfer the contour information to a matrix of the same size as label images. Then, these matrices would be the weights for CE. By assigning different weights for different elements in different regions, this function will guide the model to reach a balance between accurate segmentation results and precise contours. The experiment on open datasets shows a good performance. The proposed model was also trained on the Construction Disturbance Dataset collected from Jiang Xi Province, China. The dataset was labeled manually. The evaluation enhanced a lot on the Construction Disturbance Dataset and the IoU on two datasets increased 1 % to 2 % when using CL as the loss function. Forest Stock Volume (FSV) is one of the key indicators in forestry resource investigation and management on local, regional, and national scales. Limited by the saturation problems of optical satellite remote-sensing imagery in the retrieving of stock volume, and the high cost of Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) data, it is still challenging to estimate FSV in a large area using single-sensor remote-sensing data. In this paper, a method integrated multispectral satellite imagery and LiDAR data was developed to map stock volume in a large area. A random forest model was adopted to estimate the stock volume of larch forest in China based on the training samples from the Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS)-derived stock volume and corresponding Sentinel-2 imagery. Validation using National Forest Inventory (NFI) data, ALS-derived stock volume and ground investigation data demonstrated that the estimated stock volume had a high accuracy (R2 = 0.59, RMSE = 59.69 m3/ha, MD = 39.96 m3/ha when validated with NFI data; R2 ranged from 0.77 to 0.85, RMSE ranged from 38.68 m3/ha to 67.38 m3/ha, MD ranged from 24.90 m3/ha to 37.27 m3/ha when validated with ALS stock volume; R2 = 0.42, RMSE = 79.10 m3/ha, MD = 62.06 m3/ha when validated with field investigation data). The timely and accurate acquisition of information on the distribution of the crop planting structure in the Loess Plateau of eastern Gansu Province, one of the most important agricultural areas in Western China, is crucial for promoting fine management of agriculture and ensuring food security. This study uses multi-temporal high-resolution remote sensing images to determine optimal segmentation scales for various crops, employing the estimation of scale parameter 2 (ESP2) tool and the Ratio of Mean Absolute Deviation to Standard Deviation (RMAS) model. The Canny edge detection algorithm is then applied for multi-scale image segmentation. By incorporating crop phenological factors and using the L1-regularized logistic regression model, we optimized 39 spatial feature factors—including spectral, textural, geometric, and index features. Within a multi-level classification framework, the Random Forest (RF) classifier and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model are used to classify the cropping patterns in four test areas based on the multi-scale segmented images. The results indicate that integrating the Canny edge detection algorithm with the optimal segmentation scales calculated using the ESP2 tool and RMAS model produces crop parcels with more complete boundaries and better separability. Additionally, optimizing spatial features using the L1-regularized logistic regression model, combined with phenological information, enhances classification accuracy. Within the OBIC framework, the RF classifier achieves higher accuracy in classifying cropping patterns. The overall classification accuracies for the four test areas are 91.93%, 94.92%, 89.37%, and 90.68%, respectively. The current deformation and stable state of slopes with historical shatter signs is a concern for engineering construction. Suspected landslide scarps were discovered at the rear edge of the Genie slope on the Tibetan Plateau during a field investigation. To qualitatively determine the current status of the surface deformation of this slope, this study used high-resolution optical remote sensing, airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technologies for comprehensive analysis. The interpretation of high-resolution optical and airborne LiDAR data revealed that the rear edge of the slope exhibits three levels of scarps. However, no deformation was detected with differential InSAR (D-InSAR) analysis of ALOS-1 radar images from 2007 to 2008 or with Stacking-InSAR and small baseline subset InSAR (SBAS-InSAR) processing of Sentinel-1A radar images from 2017 to 2020. This study verified the credibility of the InSAR results using the standard deviation of the phase residuals, as well as in-borehole displacement monitoring data. A conceptual model of the slope was developed by combining field investigation, borehole coring, and horizontal exploratory tunnel data, and the results indicated that the slope is composed of steep anti-dip layered dolomite limestone and that the scarps at the trailing edges of the slope were caused by historical shallow toppling. Unlike previous remote sensing studies of deformed landslides, this paper argues that remote sensing results with reliable accuracy are also applicable to the study of undeformed slopes and can help make preliminary judgments about the stability of unexplored slopes. The poverty-stricken counties on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are characterized by ecological vulnerability and ecological degradation, which are vulnerable to economic development and human activities, thereby leading to frequent alterations of Land carbon sink changes. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the changes of land carbon sink capacity during the process of eradication of extreme poverty in poverty-stricken counties. Using remote sensing images and socio-economic data, this paper constructed land transfer matrix and land carbon sink model to analyze the changes of land carbon sink capacity in poverty-stricken counties and identified the relevant impact factors through geographic detectors. The results show significant changes in carbon sink-type land and a continuous decrease in the snow area, resulting in an obvious trend of grassland area decrease and barren area increase. Land carbon sink capacity of poverty-stricken counties during the eradication of extreme poverty is higher with an added value of 2.74 times than that before this period. Using the geographic detector to analyze the related factors, strong explanatory power was found in cash crops per capita, share of secondary industry, population density and per capita savings on the changes of carbon sink capacity in poverty-stricken counties. In view of the low accuracy and incompleteness of surface fissure extraction in mining areas, this paper takes the surface fissures in the visible light image of a mine in western China as an example, enhances the difference of spectral characteristics of the image by hue–saturation–intensity transformation, and then gets the rough extraction of ground fissures by combining the edge detection algorithm based on Sobel operator and Prewitt operator. Aiming at the discontinuity of ground fissures in remote sensing images due to the weak contrast with the environmental background, this paper uses the regional growth method based on pixel and object-oriented to realize the continuous expression of fracture areas. First, the growth area of ground fissure seed points is established, and the similarity judgment criterion based on the spectral characteristics and the real morphological characteristics of the fissure are proposed. Then, the pixels meeting the conditions are merged with the extracted objects to solve the problem that which is difficult to continuously extract ground fissure under the influence of "same object different spectrum" and vegetation coverage. The results of uniform sampling analysis show that the extraction integrity of fissures with width greater than 20 cm in 2.1 cm/pixel visible light image is 98.69%. The extraction integrity of fissures with width 10–20 cm is 86.54%. Part of fissures with width < 10 cm were also extracted, and the extraction integrity was 58.62%. Land desertification is a key environmental problem in China, especially in Northwest China, where it seriously affects the sustainable development of natural resources. In this paper, we combine high-resolution satellite remote sensing images and UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) visible light images to extract desert vegetation data and quickly locate and accurately monitor land desertification in relevant areas according to changes in vegetation coverage. Due to the strong light and dry climate of deserts in Northwest China, which results in deeper vegetation shadow texture and mostly dry shrubs with fewer stems and leaves, the accuracy of the vegetation index commonly used in visible remote sensing image classification is not able to meet the requirements for monitoring and evaluating land desertification. For this reason, in this paper, we took the Hangjin Banner in Bayannur as an example and constructed a new vegetation index, the HSVGVI (hue–saturation–value green enhancement vegetation index), based on the HSV (hue–saturation–value) color space using channel enhancement that can improve the extraction accuracy of desert vegetation and reduce misclassification. In addition, in order to further test the extraction accuracy, samples of densely vegetated and multi-shaded areas were divided in the study area according to the accuracy-influencing factors. At the same time, the HSVGVI was compared with the vegetation indices EXG (excess green index), RGBVI (red–green–blue vegetation index), MGRVI (modified green–red vegetation index), NGBDI (normalized green–red discrepancy index), and VDVI (visible-band discrepancy vegetation index) constructed based on the RGB (red–green–blue) color space. The experimental results show that the extraction accuracy of the EXG and other vegetation indices constructed in RGB color space can only reach 70%, while the extraction accuracy of the HSVGVI can reach more than 95%. In summary, the HSVGVI proposed in this paper can better realize the extraction of desert vegetation data and can provide a reliable technical tool for monitoring and evaluating land desertification. Lanzhou City is located in the semi-arid region of northwest China, which experiences serious desertification. Moreover, the high intensity of land development, with the accelerated industrialization and urbanization, causes increasingly aggravated conflict between humans and the environment. Exploring the response of the ecological environment quality to the natural environment and anthropogenic activities is important to protect the sustainable development of urban economic construction and the environment. Based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, this paper constructed a modified Remote Sensing Ecological Index (MRSEI) model which could reflect the ecological environment quality by integrating the desertification index (DI) into the Remote Sensing Ecological index (RSEI) model. This paper explores the spatiotemporal variation in the environmental quality from 2000 to 2020 in Lanzhou, China, and analyzes the natural and anthropogenic factors affecting the environment quality in terms of temperature, precipitation, gross domestic product (GDP), land use, night lighting, and population. The results showed that the mean value of MRSEI ranged from 0.254 to 0.400. The area undergoing fast growth in ecological quality was in the northwestern part of Lanzhou, and the area of decrease was in the central part. Various factors have different degrees of influence on the ecosystem, with temperature, precipitation, and land use having a greater impact, and GDP and population having a limited impact. Precipitation and temperature showed a strong impact when interacting with other factors, demonstrating that precipitation and temperature were also key factors affecting MRSEI. Overall, climate change and the implementation of ecological restoration projects have led to an improvement in the quality of the ecological environment in Lanzhou. This study provides a reference for understanding the spatiotemporal changes in the ecological environment in semi-arid Lanzhou and is conducive to formulating proper protection strategies. Architectural heritage health assessment is the basis of scientific repair and maintenance. However, existing methods do not adequately take into account the fuzziness, randomness and uncertainties unique to architectural heritage assessment. In this paper, a new evaluation model of VM-NCM is constructed by combining variable weight theory and normal cloud model theory. The model enables the combination of qualitative ratings and quantitative calculation, deals with the fuzziness in the assessment process, and resolves the randomness and reflects the uncertainty to a certain extent. Based on constructing the index system combining qualitative and quantitative indexes, the structural index values are acquired by the synergistic coupling of the fine laser point cloud model and finite element structural analysis model. The acquisition of surface index values is completed by the hyperspectral intelligent detection technology of surface materials and diseases. These reduce the generation of ambiguous information in the index detection process. An evaluation study is conducted using the Yingxian wooden pagoda in China as an example. The results show that this method takes into account the fuzziness and randomness in the evaluation process, and obtains more scientific and reliable evaluation results, which provides a research paradigm for assessing the architectural heritage health status. With escalating human activities and the substantial emissions of greenhouse gases, global warming intensifies. This phenomenon has led to increased occurrences of various extreme hydrological events, precipitating significant changes in lakes and rivers across the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. Therefore, accurate information extraction about and delineation of water bodies are crucial for lake monitoring. This paper proposes a methodology based on the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and Gumbel distribution to determine optimal segmentation thresholds. Focusing on Qinghai Lake, this study utilizes multispectral characteristics from the US Landsat satellite for analysis. Comparative assessments with seven alternative methods are conducted to evaluate accuracy. Employing the proposed approach, information about water bodies in Qinghai Lake is extracted over 38 years, from 1986 to 2023, revealing trends in area variation. Analysis indicates a rising trend in Qinghai Lake's area following a turning point in 2004. To investigate this phenomenon, Pearson correlation analysis of temperature and precipitation over the past 38 years is used and unveils the fact that slight precipitation impacts on area and that there is a positive correlation between temperature and area. In conclusion, this study employs remote sensing data and statistical analysis to comprehensively investigate mechanisms driving changes in Qinghai Lake's water surface area, providing insights into ecological shifts in lake systems against the backdrop of global warming, thereby offering valuable references for understanding and addressing these changes. [Objective] The Grand Canal is a complex hydraulic project in the eastern China. This paper studies the flooding and its detrimental impacts in the lowland areas of the canal. [Method] The research was conducted in the Pichang-Tanxin Plain, using multi-source remote sensing data and ground surveys to analyze flooding events. We calculated the normalized difference water body index (NDWI) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) before and after flooding to assess flood severity, impact on crop growth, as well as the efficacy of hydraulic facilities in mitigating flooding effects. [Result] The NDVI difference between 2004 and 2005 for crops in flooded and non-flooded areas was 0.5 and 0.25, respectively, indicating floodings detrimentally affected crop growth and development. NDWI analysis from 2003 to 2017 demonstrated that the Taierzhuang Control Gate project mitigated flooding impacts on nearby farmlands. Flooding also affected crops in non-inundated regions, with lowland crops more adversely impacted than those outside lowlands. The hydraulic facilities significantly reduced economic losses caused by flooding. [Conclusion] Remote sensing is an effective tool for monitoring inundated areas and assessing the consequences of flooding on crops. Wildfires cause great losses to the ecological environment, economy, and people's safety and belongings. As a result, it is crucial to establish wildfire susceptibility models and delineate fire risk levels. It has been proven that the use of remote sensing data, such as meteorological and topographical data, can effectively predict and evaluate wildfire susceptibility. Accordingly, this paper converts meteorological and topographical data into fire-influencing factor raster maps for wildfire susceptibility prediction. The continuous convolutional neural network (CCNN for short) based on coordinate attention (CA for short) can aggregate different location information into channels of the network so as to enhance the feature expression ability; moreover, for different patches with different resolutions, the improved CCNN model does not need to change the structural parameters of the network, which improves the flexibility of the network application in different forest areas. In order to reduce the annotation of training samples, we adopt an active learning method to learn positive features by selecting high-confidence samples, which contributes to enhancing the discriminative ability of the network. We use fire probabilities output from the model to evaluate fire risk levels and generate the fire susceptibility map. Taking Chongqing Municipality in China as an example, the experimental results show that the CA-based CCNN model has a better classification performance; the accuracy reaches 91.7%, and AUC reaches 0.9487, which is 5.1% and 2.09% higher than the optimal comparative method, respectively. Furthermore, if an accuracy of about 86% is desired, our method only requires 50% of labeled samples and thus saves about 20% and 40% of the labeling efforts compared to the other two methods, respectively. Ultimately, the proposed model achieves the balance of high prediction accuracy and low annotation cost and is more helpful in classifying fire high warning zones and fire-free zones. Traditionally, the assessment of heavy metal concentrations using remote sensing technology is sample-intensive, with expensive model development. Using a mining area case study of Daxigou, China, we propose a cross-time-domain transfer learning model to monitor heavy metal pollution using samples collected from different time domains. Specifically, spectral indices derived from Landsat 8 multispectral images, terrain, and other auxiliary data correlative to soil heavy metals were prepared. A cross time-domain sample transfer learning model proposed in the paper based on the TrAdaBoost algorithm was used for the Cu content mapping in the topsoil by selective use of soil samples acquired in 2017 and 2019. We found that the proposed model accurately estimated the concentration of Cu in the topsoil of the mining area in 2019 and performed better than the traditional TrAdaBoost algorithms. The goodness of fit (R2) of the test set increased from 0.55 to 0.66; the relative prediction deviation (RPD) increased from 1.37 to 1.76; and finally, the root-mean-square deviation (RMSE), decreased from 8.33 to 7.24 mg·kg−1. Land use transition and its impact on ecosystem service value (ESV) are the foundation for optimizing the layout of territorial space and ecological civilization construction. With the acceleration of industrialization and urbanization, the area of construction land expands in China. To accurately estimate the ESV in industrial counties, the impact of construction land on the ecological environment should be fully considered. This paper took Gangcheng District, Jinan City, a steel base in the Shandong Province of China as an example, then the value coefficients of "three wastes" factors (waste gas, wastewater, and waste) were introduced, and an improved calculation method of ESV was put forward for industrial counties in combination with remote sensing and land use data. Finally, the land use transition and its ESV effect in typical industrial counties were analyzed using geo-informatic Tupu and grid method. The results showed that the most important land use transitions were from grassland and forestland to cultivated land, from cultivated land and forestland to construction land in 1990–2010, and from cultivated land transformed to forestland in 2010–2021. The types of land use transition were mainly repetitive and continuous. The ESV first decreased and then increased, with a slight overall decline for more than 30 years, showing a spatial distribution characteristic of "low in the south-central and high around." Land use transition had the impact on ESV with the negative contribution rate of 68.28% in 1990–2000 and 73.16% in 2000–2010, mainly caused by the transition from forestland and grassland to cultivated land and construction land, and the positive contribution rate of 81.72% in 2010–2021, mainly caused by the transition from cultivated land to forestland. Compared with the ESV calculation method without introducing the "three wastes" factor and Xie Gaodi's method, the improved method in this paper considered the inevitable impact of construction land on ESV in industrial counties and made the ESV calculated more accurate according to the regional nature. This paper cannot only enrich the theories and technical methods of land use transition and its effects, and provide a case reference for similar industrial counties, but also provide data and decision-making support for the spatial layout and ecological protection in the study area. This study takes the Zhouyuan site region, which is the most representative Western Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC-771BC) large city-site in China, as an example. Based on the interpretation results of satellite remote sensing images from 1973 to 2021, the paper systematically analyzed the evolution of landscape patterns in the Zhouyuan site region spanning for about 50 years using 4 methods, including land use classification, land use transfer matrix, landscape pattern distribution gravity center model and landscape pattern index. Additionally, the results show that nowadays Zhouyuan site is still in a period of accelerated invasion and destruction by natural and human factors, which indicates that the protection of the Zhouyuan site has been inadequate or even unsuccessful for a long time. For the purpose of making more accurate and better protection of the Zhouyuan site, four challenges and six protection recommendations have been put forward. Based on remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS), this paper contributed a method combining 4 models to analyze the spatial-temporal evolution characteristics of landscape pattern of ancient large city-sites, in order to provide more basis for the formulation of cultural relic protection strategies. Using a shape model (SM) is a typical method to determine the phenological phases of crops with long-time-series satellite remote sensing data. The average AGDD-based shape model (AAGDD-SM) takes temperature into account compared to SM, however, the commonly used daily average temperature is not sufficient to determine the exact AGDD owing to the possibly significant changes in temperatures throughout the day. In this paper, a modified shape model was proposed for the better estimation of phenological dates and it is incorporated into the continuous AGDD (CAGDD) which was calculated based on temperatures from a continuous 24 h within a day, different from the calendar day or the average AGDD indicators. In this study, the CAGDD replaced the abscissa of the NDVI growth curve over a 5-year period (2014 to 2018, excluding 2015) for a test site of early rice in Jiangxi province of China. Four key phenological phases, including the reviving, tillering, heading and anthesis phases, were selected and determined with reference to the field-observed phenological data. The results show that compared with the AAGDD-SM, the method proposed in this paper has basically improved the prediction of each phenological period. For those cases where the average temperature is lower than the minimum temperatures (K1) but the effective accumulated temperature is not zero, more accurate AGDD can be calculated according to the method in this paper. Currently, the opportunistic method to estimate rainfall using commercial microwave links (CMLs) has been shown as an efficient way to complement traditional instruments in terms of spatial‐temporal resolution and coverage. In this paper, we collected data from 26 CMLs in Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, and conducted experiments on rainfall field reconstruction and nowcasting. First, the raw CML data were processed to invert the path‐averaged rainfall intensity. Second, the algorithms of inverse distance weighting (IDW) and ordinary kriging (OK) interpolation were employed to reconstruct the rainfall field. Then a 10‐min prediction of the rainfall field was achieved using a nowcasting model based on the long short‐term memory neural network and a setup window was introduced to improve the prediction performance of the first few minutes. The reconstruction results show that the average correlation coefficient (ACC) and the average root mean square error (ARMSE) between the IDW‐based results and daily cumulative rainfall from rain gauges (RGs) are 0.89 and 8.69 mm, respectively, while the ACC and ARMSE between the OK‐based results and RG data are 0.89 and 9.13 mm, respectively. The nowcasting results show that the ACC between the prediction results with a 5‐min setup window and the IDW‐retrieved rainfall fields can reach 0.91 at the first minute and gradually decrease to 0.20 within 10 min. Furthermore, the model has better nowcasting performance for stratiform precipitation and mixed precipitation compared to convective precipitation. Plain Language Summary: Accurate and real‐time rainfall monitoring and forecasting are of great significance for disaster prevention and control, agriculture, meteorological research, and related fields. However, traditional rainfall measurement methods are insufficient for meeting the demands of comprehensive precipitation observations because of poor spatial‐temporal resolution and limited coverage. Monitoring mine activities can help management track the status of mineral resource exploration and mine rehabilitation. It is crucial to the sustainable development of the mining industry and the protection of the geological environment in mining areas. To monitor the mining activities of shallow surface outcrops in the arid and semi-arid regions of northwest China, this paper proposes a remote sensing monitoring approach of mining activities based on deep learning and integrated interferometric synthetic aperture radar technique. This approach uses the DeepLabV3-ResNet model to identify and extract the spatial location of the mine patches and then uses object-oriented analysis and spatial analysis methods to optimize the mine patch boundaries. SBAS-InSAR technique is used to obtain the time-series deformation information of the mine patches and is combined with the multi-temporal optical imagery to analyze the mining activities in the study area. The proposed approach has a recognition accuracy of 95.80% for the identification and extraction of mine patches, with an F1-score of 0.727 at the pixel level, and the average area similarity for all patches is 0.78 at the object-oriented level. The proposed approach possesses the capability to analyze mining activities, indicating promising prospects for engineering applications. The analysis of marine environmental parameters plays a significant role in various aspects, including sea surface target detection, the monitoring of the marine ecological environment, marine meteorology and disaster forecasting, and the monitoring of internal waves in the ocean. In particular, for sea surface target detection, the accurate and high-resolution input of marine environmental parameters is crucial for multi-scale sea surface modeling and the prediction of sea clutter characteristics. In this paper, based on the low-resolution wind speed, significant wave height, and wave period data provided by ECMWF for the surrounding seas of China (specified latitude and longitude range), a deep learning model based on a residual structure is proposed. By introducing an attention module, the model effectively addresses the poor modeling performance of traditional methods like nearest neighbor interpolation and linear interpolation at the edge positions in the image. Experimental results demonstrate that with the proposed approach, when the spatial resolution of wind speed increases from 0.5° to 0.25°, the results achieve a mean square error (MSE) of 0.713, a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of 49.598, and a structural similarity index measure (SSIM) of 0.981. When the spatial resolution of the significant wave height increases from 1° to 0.5°, the results achieve a MSE of 1.319, a PSNR of 46.928, and an SSIM of 0.957. When the spatial resolution of the wave period increases from 1° to 0.5°, the results achieve a MSE of 2.299, a PSNR of 44.515, and an SSIM of 0.940. The proposed method can generate high-resolution marine environmental parameter data for the surrounding seas of China at any given moment, providing data support for subsequent sea surface modeling and for the prediction of sea clutter characteristics. Summary: As LEO (Low Earth Orbit) high‐resolution Earth observation satellite needs to transmit a large amount of remote sensing data from the satellite to the ground station, higher downlink capacity still poses a severe challenge to LEO. Therefore, variable coding and modulation (VCM) has become an important scheme to optimize the performance of satellite downlink. In this paper, the downlink VCM system of China Earth observation satellite is studied for the first time. By evaluating the free space loss of the satellite downlink path, a VCM‐based satellite downlink system is designed, and a DVB‐S2 BCH‐LDPC encoded variable bit rate high‐order MAPSK modulator is implemented. The maximum channel bit rate can reach 3.5 Gbps. Then, the experimental results of Gaofen‐7 satellite, which was launched in November 2019, are carried out which showed that our design method effectively meets the design requirements, and the performance is verified. On June 17, 2020, Aniangzhai landslide, an ancient landslide located in Danba County, southwest China, was reactivated by Meilonggou debris flow. The front edge of the slope collapsed, mobilizing a soil mass of about 2.35 × 106 m3. Evaluating the stability of the whole slope is of great importance to avoid further landslides and mitigate the damage for Aniangzhai villagers living on this slope. This paper focuses on the inaccessible upper slope of Aniangzhai landslide (no attention paid before) that exhibits a relative elevation difference of more than 1000 m. Multi-source remote sensing, including unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry, light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and satellite-based interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques, was used in this research to identify and evaluate this high mountain upper slope potential hazard in Aniangzhai landslide. Considering the huge height difference and the steep slope of Aniangzhai landslide, an iterative route planning method was proposed and adopted to obtain a 3D model with 0.02 m resolution and a DEM with 0.25 m resolution by using UAV and LiDAR close-in flight method, respectively. Meter-level huge cracks were clearly identified by the high-resolution UAV 3D model and LiDAR data, which confirm that the location of these cracks is related to the morphological structure of this ancient landslide. Time series InSAR analysis reveals the activity of this high-altitude area, with a maximum LOS displacement rate of 15 cm/a. The combination of the above remote sensing technologies confirms and reveals the high potential risk and the reactivated condition of the upper slope of Aniangzhai landslide. Through this finding, we show that the evolution of Aniangzhai landslide happened through four stages with a cascading effect. This paper proves the usefulness of an integrated method to successfully identify and evaluate the high-altitude upper slope potential hazard and compares the technical features of them, providing a reference for future works that aimed at mitigating the potential damage of the upper slope. The evaluation of satellite soil moisture is a big challenge owing to the large spatial mismatch between pixel-based satellite soil moisture products and point-based in situ measurements. Upscaling in situ measurements to obtain the "true value" of soil moisture content at the satellite grid/footprint scale can make up for the scale difference and improve the validation. Many existing upscaling methods have strict requirements regarding the spatial distribution and quantity of soil moisture sensors. However, in reality, soil-moisture-monitoring networks are commonly sparse with low sensor density, which increases the difficulty of obtaining accurate upscaled soil moisture data and limits the validation of satellite products. For this reason, this paper proposes a scheme to upscale in situ measurements using five machine learning methods along with Landsat 8 datasets and DEM data to validate the accuracy of a SMAP-enhanced passive soil moisture product for a sparse network on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The proposed scheme realizes the upscaling of in situ soil moisture data to the pixel scale (30 m × 30 m) and then to the coarse grid scale (9 km × 9 km) by using multi-source remote sensing data as the bridge of scale conversion. The long-time SMAP SM products since April 2015 on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau were validated based on upscaled soil moisture data. The results show that (1) random forest regression performs the best, and the upscaled soil moisture data reflect the region-average soil moisture conditions that can be used for evaluating SMAP data; (2) the SMAP product meets its scientific measurement requirements; and (3) the SMAP product generally underestimates the soil moisture in the study area. In the context of global sustainable development, solar energy is very widely used. The installed capacity of photovoltaic panels in countries around the world, especially in China, is increasing steadily and rapidly. In order to obtain accurate information about photovoltaic panels and provide data support for the macro-control of the photovoltaic industry, this paper proposed a hierarchical information extraction method, including positioning information and shape information, and carried out photovoltaic panel distribution mapping. This method is suitable for large-scale centralized photovoltaic power plants based on multi-source satellite remote sensing images. This experiment takes the three northwest provinces of China as the research area. First, a deep learning scene classification model, the EfficientNet-B5 model, is used to locate the photovoltaic power plants on 16-m spatial resolution images. This step obtains the area that contains or may contain photovoltaic panels, greatly reducing the study area with an accuracy of 99.97%. Second, a deep learning semantic segmentation model, the U2-Net model, is used to precisely locate photovoltaic panels on 2-m spatial resolution images. This step achieves the exact extraction results of the photovoltaic panels from the area obtained in the previous step, with an accuracy of 97.686%. This paper verifies the superiority of a hierarchical information extraction method in terms of accuracy and efficiency through comparative experiments with DeepLabV3+, U-Net, SegNet, and FCN8s. This meaningful work identified 180 centralized photovoltaic power plants in the study area. Additionally, this method makes full use of the characteristics of different remote sensing data sources. The accurate estimation of forest aboveground biomass is of great significance for forest management and carbon balance monitoring. Remote sensing instruments have been widely applied in forest parameters inversion with wide coverage and high spatiotemporal resolution. In this paper, the capability of different remote-sensed imagery was investigated, including multispectral images (GaoFen-6, Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8) and various SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data (GaoFen-3, Sentinel-1, ALOS-2), in aboveground forest biomass estimation. In particular, based on the forest inventory data of Hangzhou in China, the Random Forest (RF), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Convolutional Neural Networks Long Short-Term Memory Networks (CNN-LSTM) algorithms were deployed to construct the forest biomass estimation models, respectively. The estimate accuracies were evaluated under the different configurations of images and methods. The results show that for the SAR data, ALOS-2 has a higher biomass estimation accuracy than the GaoFen-3 and Sentinel-1. Moreover, the GaoFen-6 data is slightly worse than Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 optical data in biomass estimation. In contrast with the single source, integrating multisource data can effectively enhance accuracy, with improvements ranging from 5% to 10%. The CNN-LSTM generally performs better than CNN and RF, regardless of the data used. The combination of CNN-LSTM and multisource data provided the best results in this case and can achieve the maximum R2 value of up to 0.74. Thermodynamic and liquid water profiles can be retrieved by a ground-based microwave radiometer (MWR) in nearly all weather conditions, which is useful for detecting mesoscale phenomena. This paper reviews the advances in remote sensing of atmospheric profiles and cloud properties by MWR in central China. Comparative studies indicate that MWR retrieval accuracy is different under various skies, especially those that decay under precipitation. The off-zenith method is proven to be capable of reducing the impact of precipitation and snow on MWR retrieval accuracy. Application studies demonstrate that MWR retrievals are helpful for early warning of rainstorms, hailstorms, and thunderstorms. Moreover, MWR retrievals provide a way to study cloud properties. The temporal variations of cloud occurrence frequency (COF) and liquid water path (LWP) are different for low, middle, and high clouds, and the vertical distribution of COF is also different in autumn and other seasons. Note that MWR can infer valid retrievals over the eastern Tibetan Plateau due to the weak precipitation over there. Also, cloud properties over the eastern Tibetan Plateau present differences from those over central China, and this is related to the different characteristics of atmospheric water vapor between these two regions. To bring more benefits for mechanism study and early warning of severe weather and numerical weather prediction, the decayed accuracy of MWR zenith retrievals under precipitation should be resolved. There is large distribution of sugarcane growth in south China which is play an important role of sugar industry. Remote sensing technology is used in sugarcane monitoring for large areas. However, the optical satellite data coverage is influenced by the rainy weather especially in the grand growth period of sugarcane. GF-1 WFV has widely swath 800km and short revisit time which is ideal data for this study area. In this paper, the random forest model was chosen to get a precise classification result of sugarcane based on time-series band value and 5 spectral indexes image is 89.73% and the Kappa coefficient is 0.65 which is satisfied the overall extraction of sugarcane for large area is the southern China. In this paper, multi-source observation, such as aircraft, ground-based remote sensing, and satellite-retrieved data, has been utilized to compare and analyze the vertical characteristics of aerosol optical properties and the planetary boundary layer height (HPBL) over the North China Plain (NCP) region during May–June 2016. Aircraft observations show the vertical profiles of aerosol absorption coefficients (σabs), scattering coefficients (σsca), and extinction coefficients (σext) gradually decrease with altitude, with their maximum values near HPBL. The vertical profiles of σext depended most on the vertical distribution of measured σsca, indicating a significant contribution of scattering aerosols. In addition, the prominent characteristic of the inverse relationship between σext and moisture profile could serve as a reference for predicting air quality in the NCP region. The lower layer pollution during the field experiment was likely caused by the accumulation of fine-mode aerosols, characterized by the vertical distribution of the Ångström exponent and the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) products. Typically, HPBL derived from aircraft and surface Micro Pulse Lidar (MPL) was approximate, while the predicted HPBL by meteorological data indicates an underestimation of ~192 m. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) calculated from aircraft and ground-based remote sensing (such as MPL and AERONET) experienced a strong correlation, and both of them exhibited a similar tendency. However, the AOD retrieved from satellites was significantly larger than that from aircraft and ground-based remote sensing. Overall, the inversion algorithm, cloud identification algorithm, representativeness of the space, and time of the observation may lead to an overestimation or underestimation of AOD under certain circumstances. This study may serve as a re-evaluation of AOD retrieved from multi-source observations and provide a reference to uncover the actual atmospheric environment in the NCP regions. This study investigates the application of hyperspectral image space–spectral fusion technology in lithologic classification, using data from China's GF-5 and Europe's Sentinel-2A. The research focuses on the southern region of Tuanjie Peak in the Western Kunlun Range, comparing five space–spectral fusion methods: GSA, SFIM, CNMF, HySure, and NonRegSRNet. To comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of these fusion methods, the study conducts a comprehensive assessment from three aspects: evaluation of fusion effects, lithologic classification experiments, and field validation. In the evaluation of fusion effects, the study uses an index analysis and comparison of spectral curves before and after fusion, concluding that the GSA fusion method performs the best. For lithologic classification, the Random Forest (RF) classification method is used, training with both area and point samples. The classification results from area sample training show significantly higher overall accuracy compared to point samples, aligning well with 1:50,000 scale geological maps. In field validation, the study employs on-site verification combined with microscopic identification and comparison of images with actual spectral fusion, finding that the classification results for the five lithologies are essentially consistent with field validation results. The "GSA+RF" method combination established in this paper, based on data from GF-5 and Sentinel-2A satellites, can provide technical support for lithological classification in similar high-altitude regions. Mountainous terrains are typical over southeast China, with complex and diverse topography, large terrain undulations, rich geographic features, and meteorological variations. Previous studies show that ERA5 meteorological variables are generally accurate with respect to large plains or urban agglomerations, while their applicability to mountainous areas remains inconclusive. In this paper, using high-precision measurements probed by ground-based remote sensing instruments in May–July 2023 at a typical mountainous Shanghuang site in southeast China, the vertical accuracy of the ERA5 reanalysis datasets were comparatively evaluated. Our findings depict that the horizontal wind speeds of the ERA5 reanalysis data show a good performance compared to the Doppler lidar observations. In quantitative terms, ERA5 horizontal wind speeds are about 8% higher than the observed values below a height of 400 m, while above 400 m, an increasing negative bias is observed along as altitude increases. Differing from the horizontal wind speeds, there is a large discrepancy in the vertical wind speeds between the ERA5 and the observations, with a deviation of −150% to 40%. In terms of the thermal variables, the temperature extracted from ERA5 are consistent with the measurements in the low troposphere. Nevertheless, large systematic errors occur at 2000–3000 m, and the overall presentation shows that the errors gradually increase with the increase in altitude. Concerning the relative humidity, the general trend in ERA5 is similar to that observed by the microwave radiometer, but the relative errors from 500 to 2500 m range from 40% to 100%. This study also reveals that ERA5 is poorly representative and requires further improvements during extreme weather events such as rainstorms and typhoons. In particular, the horizontal wind speeds at the middle and lower levels deviate strongly from the observations. Given the importance of atmospheric thermodynamic stratifications in terms of both environmental and climatic issues, the results expand the application of the ERA5 reanalysis datasets in the mountainous areas of southeast China. Globally, forest ecosystems, especially subtropical forests, play a central role in biogeochemical cycles and climate regulation, demonstrating their irreplaceable function. The subtropical region of China, characterized by its unique forest ecosystem, complex terrain, climate heterogeneity, diverse vegetation types, and frequent human activities, underscores the importance of the in-depth study of its net primary productivity (NPP). This paper employs the eddy covariance–light use efficiency (EC-LUE) model to quantitatively estimate the gross primary productivity (GPP) of this region from 2001 to 2018, followed by an estimation of the actual net primary productivity (ANPP) using the carbon use efficiency (CUE). The results showed that over these 18 years, the annual average ANPP was 677.17 gC m−2 a−1, exhibiting an overall increasing trend, particularly in mountainous areas, reserves, and the cultivated lands of the northeastern plains, whereas a significant decrease was observed around the urban agglomerations on the southeast coast. Furthermore, the Thornthwaite memorial model was applied to calculate the potential net primary productivity (PNPP), and diverse scenarios were set to quantitatively evaluate the impact of climate change and human activities on the vegetation productivity in the study area. It was found that in areas where the ANPP increased, both human activities and climate change jointly influenced ANPP dynamics; in areas with a decreased ANPP, the impact of human activities was particularly significant. Additionally, the heterogeneous distribution of ANPP across different altitudinal gradients and the driving effects of various climatic factors were analyzed. Finally, a partial correlation analysis was used to examine the relationships between the temperature, precipitation, and ANPP. This study indicated that temperature and precipitation have a substantial impact on the growth and distribution of vegetation in the region, yet the extent of this influence shows considerable variation among different areas. This provides a robust scientific basis for further research and understanding of the carbon dynamics of subtropical forest ecosystems and their role in the global carbon cycle. This study investigates the 40-year spatiotemporal evolution of cropland in Northeast China's black soil region at the county scale. Utilizing land use/cover maps from 1980 to 2020 with a 30 m x 30 m resolution, we employed various analytical methods, including mathematical statistics, GIS spatial analysis, land use transition matrix, landscape pattern analysis, and hotspot analysis. The findings of this study are as follows: (1) Cropland area expanded by 51,976.76 km² from 1980 to 2020, mainly concentrated in the Sanjiang Plain, Songnen Plain, and Liaohe Plain. Notably, areas near prefecture-level city locations experienced a decrease in cropland, while regions farther from cities witnessed an increase. (2) Cropland primarily transitioned from woodland, grassland, and unused land to cropland, covering substantial areas. Conversely, cropland was converted mainly into woodland, built-up land, and grassland. (3) Over the same period, cropland in the region exhibited increased elevation and slope, with average altitude rising by 2.06 m and average slope increasing by 0.0369 degrees. (4) The study revealed an increase in cropland proportion, predominance, and aggregation, alongside more irregular shapes and reduced subdivision. These findings highlight significant changes in the cropland landscape in Northeast China's black soil region and offer insights for policy recommendations and land management strategies. The research findings of this paper can offer valuable insights for the protection and utilization of cropland in the region. Forest stock volume is the main factor to evaluate forest carbon sink level. At present, the combination of multi-source remote sensing and non-parametric models has been widely used in FSV estimation. However, the biodiversity of natural forests is complex, and the response of the spatial information of remote sensing images to FSV is significantly reduced, which seriously affects the accuracy of FSV estimation. To address this challenge, this paper takes China's Baishanzu Forest Park with representative characteristics of natural forests as the research object, integrates the forest survey data, SRTM data, and Landsat 8 images of Baishanzu Forest Park, constructs a time series dataset based on survey time, and establishes an FSV estimation model based on the CNN-LSTM-Attention algorithm. The model uses the convolutional neural network to extract the spatial features of remote sensing images, uses the LSTM to capture the time-varying characteristics of FSV, captures the feature variables with a high response to FSV through the attention mechanism, and finally completes the prediction of FSV. The experimental results show that some features (e.g., texture, elevation, etc.) of the dataset based on multi-source data feature variables are more effective in FSV estimation than spectral features. Compared with the existing models such as MLR and RF, the proposed model achieved higher accuracy in the study area (R2 = 0.8463, rMSE = 26.73 m3/ha, MAE = 16.47 m3/ha). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ponds constitute a pivotal component of aquatic ecosystems. The aquatic ecosystem of the Huai River Basin (HRB) in China was once damaged by severe pollution, and numerous ponds in the basin have not been secured. In this paper, Shenqiu County, a typical county in HRB with many ponds, is selected. Based on high-resolution images with ALOS in 2010, GF-2 in 2016, and GF-1 in 2022, we employed discriminant analysis (DA), classification and regression tree, support vector machine, and random forest to extract the ponds based on object-oriented and further analyzed the spatial-temporal variations of the ponds in this county. The results of the DA in these three years exhibited a higher kappa coefficient (>0.7), and overall accuracy (>75%), signifying superior performance when compared to the other three methods. There were 4625, 5315, and 4748 ponds in 2010, 2016, and 2022, with a total area of 12.87, 11.99, and 9.37 km2, respectively. The number of ponds had a trend of rising in the initial period (2010–2016) and falling later (2016–2022), while the total area revealed a continuous decline. Meanwhile, these ponds showed a clustering phenomenon with three main clustering areas, and the scope of the clustering areas also changed to a certain extent from 2010 to 2022. Our study offers valuable methodological support for the ecological monitoring and management of water environments in regions characterized by a dense concentration of ponds. Surface coal mining causes vegetation disturbance while providing an energy source. Thus, much attention is given to monitoring the vegetation of surface coal mining regions. Multitemporal satellite imagery, such as Landsat time-series imagery, is an operational environment monitoring service widely used to access vegetation traits and ensure vegetation surveillance across large areas. However, most of the previous studies have been conducted with change detection models or threshold-based methods that require multiple parameter settings or sample training. In this paper, we tried to analyze the change traits of vegetation in surface coal mining regions using shape-based clustering based on Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series without multiple parameter settings and sample training. The shape-based clustering used in this paper applied shape-based distance (SBD) to obtain the distance between time series and used Dynamic Time Warping Barycenter Averaging (DBA) to generate cluster centroids. We applied the method to a stack of 19 NDVI images from 2000 to 2018 for a surface coal mining region located in North China. The results showed that the shape-based clustering used in this paper was appropriate for monitoring vegetation change in the region and achieved 79.0% overall accuracy in detecting disturbance-recovery trajectory types. The net primary productivity (NPP) of vegetation is an important indicator reflecting the vegetation dynamics and carbon sequestration capacity in a region. In recent years, China has implemented policies to carry out ecological protection. To understand the changes in the distribution of vegetation NPP in China and the influence of climate factors, the Carnegie–Ames–Stanford approach (CASA) model was used to estimate the NPP from 2001 to 2020. In this paper, several sets of measurement datasets and products were collected to evaluate the effectiveness of the model and suggestions were provided for the modification of the CASA model based on the evaluation results. In addition to the correlation analysis, this paper presents a statistical method for analyzing the quantitative effects in individual climatic factors on NPP changes in large regions. The comparison found that the model has a better estimation effect on grassland and needleleaf forest. The estimation error for the evergreen needleleaf forest (ENF) and deciduous broadleaf forest (DBF) decreases with the warming of the climatic zone, while the evergreen broadleaf forest (EBF) and deciduous needleleaf forest (DNF) do the opposite. The changes in total CASA NPP were consistent with the trends of other products, showing a dynamic increasing trend. In terms of the degree of correlation between the NPP changes and climatic factors, the NPP changes were significantly correlated with temperature in about 10.39% of the vegetation cover area and with precipitation in about 26.92% of the vegetation cover area. It was found that the NPP variation had a negative response to the temperature variation in Inner Mongolia grasslands, while it had a positive but small effect (±10 g C) in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau grasslands. Precipitation had a facilitative effect on the grassland NPP variation, while an increase in the annual precipitation of more than 200 mm had an inhibitory effect in arid and semi-arid regions. With the rapid development through the advancement of technology, China geological hazard monitoring system has made great progress in engineering application. Advanced geological technology on hazardous geological monitoring is emerging, Internet of Things (IOTs), Geographic Information System (GIS), and Remote Sensing (RS), for example. However, there are still many problems existing subjected to monitoring system, such as sensor power storage, stability, compatibility, and weak analysis ability, which hinders the further development and popularization of the automatic monitoring system on geological hazards. In this paper, a new buried rock sensor and a fixed inclinometer are adopted, combined with the IOTs and the Beidou navigation system, to build an automatic monitoring system for geological disasters; it not only improves the accuracy and timeliness of monitoring data of surface and rock strata vibration and displacement of geological disasters but also provides guidance for future system design and development, especially in remote areas with steep terrain.
