Radionuclide dispersion model, which is of critical importance to the emergency response of severe nuclear accident, is used to estimate the consequences arising from accidental or routine releases and to predict areas of high contamination. It is difficult to evaluate the radioactive consequence accurately and rapidly for the accidental release of radionuclides from marine reactor because of the complex mobility feature in the sea. Based on CFD method, a finite-volume, three-dimensional regional oceanic dispersion model was developed in this paper to simulate the dispersion of radionuclides originating from marine reactor. The simulated dose variation of 137Cs presented good agreement with the monitoring data of marine radioactive pollution caused by Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear accident, which demonstrated the validity of the method. A severe accident scenario of marine reactor was simulated and analyzed, which indicates that the regional oceanic dispersion model can provide dose assessment for nuclear emergency response. In Europe, the two main nuclear accident response decision support systems in use are ARGOS and JRODOS, both of which make use of the FDMT (Food Chain and Dose Module for Terrestrial pathways) model to simulate the transfer of radioactivity along terrestrial food chains and to predict radionuclide activity concentrations in human foodstuffs. FDMT was originally developed in the early 1990s for Southern German agricultural conditions. Its application to other geographical settings has raised concerns regarding its fitness for purpose. Furthermore, the FDMT model in its original format lacks transparency, flexibility, and the possibility to be run probabilistically. In order to improve FDMT's fitness for purpose and overcome its main shortcomings, it has been implemented in a new modelling platform which incorporates powerful numerical solvers and renders uncertainty and sensitivity analysis possible. The modelling structure of FDMT has been re-configured, and a library configuration has been introduced which offers flexibility in working such that model components can be tested, modified, or replaced easily. The new FDMT allows for the consideration of case/region-specific issues and to make predictions which are of more relevance and of better use with regard to decision making and management of risk. Furthermore, the default databases of FDMT have been updated and wherever possible PDFs have been assigned. Based on the Weather Research and Forecasting Model Coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) atmospheric chemistry model, a parameterization scheme for the radioactive isotope caesium (137Cs), considering processes such as advection, turbulent diffusion, dry deposition, and wet deposition, was constructed, enabling the spatial distribution simulation of the concentration and deposition of 137Cs. The experimental simulation studies were carried out during the high emission period of the Fukushima nuclear accident (from 11 to 17 March 2011). Two sets of comparison experiments, with or without deposition, were designed, the effects of wind field and precipitation on the spatial transport and ground deposition of 137Cs were analyzed, and the influence of wind field and precipitation on 137Cs vertical transport was analyzed in detail. The results indicate that the model can accurately simulate the meteorological and 137Cs variables. On 15 March, 137Cs dispersed towards the Kanto Plain in Japan under the influence of northeastern winds. In comparison to the experiment without deposition, the concentration of 137Cs in the Fukushima area decreased by approximately 286 Bq·m−3 in the deposition experiment. Under the influence of updrafts in the non-deposition experiment, a 137Cs cloud spread upward to a maximum height of 6 km, whereas in the deposition experiment, the highest dispersion of the 137Cs cloud only reach a height of 4 km. Affected by the wind field, dry deposition is mainly distributed in Fukushima, the Kanto Plain, and their eastern ocean areas, with a maximum dry deposition of 5004.5 kBq·m−2. Wet deposition is mainly influenced by the wind field and precipitation, distributed in the surrounding areas of Fukushima, with a maximum wet deposition of 725.3 kBq·m−2. The single-station test results from the deposition experiment were better than those for the non-deposition experiment: the percentage deviations of the Tokyo, Chiba, Maebashi, and Naraha stations decreased by 61%, 69%, 46%, and 51%, respectively, and the percentage root mean square error decreased by 46%, 25%, 38%, and 48%, respectively. Temporal absences in observation records lead to release losses during the source term inversions of atmospheric radionuclide emissions. Consequently, objectively-estimated source terms for the Fukushima accident contain fewer release details and present large discrepancies when compared with the expert-judged one. This paper describes an objective method that can adaptively recover the missing releases caused by the temporal absences of observations. The proposed method assumes that the accident releases of radionuclides are piecewise-constant and comprise both peaks and constant releases. The missing releases are adaptively recovered as either peaks or constant releases by minimizing the total variation of the estimated source term. The proposed method is applied to the Fukushima accident and evaluated against regional airborne and deposited 137Cs observations. The results demonstrate that this method effectively recovers the missing releases, producing a source term that matches the timing of both on-site gamma dose rate peaks and accident events. The retrieved source term improves the simulation of air concentrations and reproduces most of the deposition patterns. This is the first time that an objective method has independently reproduced the details in the expert-judged one for the Fukushima accident. In March 2011, severe nuclear accident happened at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) after the gigantic earthquake and following huge tsunami wave. A lot of investigations to assess environmental and radiological impacts of released radionuclides have been conducted by domestic and international organizations. Environmental radioactivity research related to the FDNPP accident has spread widely over different scientific fields due to specific features of the accident, and specifically its impact on the marine environment. The present paper summarizes major lessons learned from the environmental investigations of the FDNPP accident. Environmental radioactivity studies have typical interdisciplinary character; especially physics and chemistry are fundamental as a base of process studies in the environment. In this sight, we review chemical aspects regarding FDNPP-derived radiocesium transfer within and between compartments (atmosphere, ocean and land). We also discuss future trends in investigations of behavior of anthropogenic radionuclides in the environment, important not only for a better understanding of impacts of the FDNPP accident on the environment, but also for improving our general knowledge of the total environment in the Anthropocene era and its protection for the future. • 10 years after the FDNPP accident, the environment has been contaminated mainly by Cs-137. • Understanding of Cs-transfer within and between compartments has considerably improved. • Chemical processes are a key factor of Cs-transfer between aquatic and solid phases. • Migration of Cs-137 in terrestrial and marine ecosystems will dominate in future studies. A fleet of thirteen in-service global container ships continuously measured the air dose rates over the North Pacific after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) accident. The results showed that the elevated air dose rates over the Port of Tokyo and the FDNPS emissions are significantly correlated (log(emission fluxes) = 54.98 x (air dose rates) (R = 0.95, P-value<0.01), and they are also significantly correlated with the Tsukuba deposition fluxes (log(deposition fluxes) = 0.47 + 30.98 (air dose rates) (R = 0.91, P-value<0.01). These results demonstrate the direct impact of the FDNPS emissions on the depositions of radionuclides and the air dose rates over the Port of Tokyo. Over the North Pacific, the correlation equations are log(emission fluxes) = -2.72 + 202.36 x (air dose rates over the northwestern Pacific) (R = 0.40, P-value<0.01), and log(emission fluxes) = -0.55 + 80.19 x (air dose rates over the northeastern Pacific) (R = 0.29, P-value = 0.0424). These results indicate that the resuspension of the deposited radionuclides have become a dominant source in the transport of radionuclides across the North Pacific. Model simulations show underestimated air dose rates during the periods of 22-25 March 2011 and 27-30 March 2011 indicating the lack of mechanisms, such as the resuspension of radionuclides, in the model.
