Pathogens cause various infectious diseases and high morbidity and mortality which is a global public health threat. The highly sensitive and specific detection is of significant importance for the effective treatment and intervention to minimise the impact. However, conventional detection methods including culture and molecular method gravely depend on expensive equipment and well-trained skilled personnel, limiting in the laboratory. It remains challenging to adapt in resource-limiting areas, e.g., low and middle-income countries (LMICs). To this end, low-cost, rapid, and sensitive detection tools with the capability of field testing e.g., a portable device for identification and quantification of pathogens, has attracted increasing attentions. Recently, paper-based microfluidic analytical devices (μPADs) have shown a promising tool for rapid and on-site diagnosis, providing a cost-effective and sensitive analytical approach for pathogens detection. The fast turn-round data collection may also contribute to better understanding of the risks and insights on mitigation method. In this paper, critical developments of μPADs for in-field detection of pathogens both for clinical diagnostics and environmental surveillance are reviewed. Pulp and paper industries emit various odorous gases during the pulp production and paper-making phase, which are unpleasant and have harmful effects on the human body. The working staffs are continuously exposed to these gases and develop various health issues. Hence, regular monitoring and analysis of such gases are necessary to avoid any sudden high concentration exposure and to prevent adverse health effects on the staff. An electronic nose (EN) has an array of gas sensors with an alert system for early detection of gases. Various ENs have been developed for varying applications till date. The detailed knowledge of the sensors used, their sensitivity and technology is helpful in development of any EN. The objective of this study is to comprehensively review various developed ENs with respect to their gas sensing and pattern recognition (PR) technologies. The information on gases released from pulp and paper industries is also compiled. The evolution of EN technology, its various applications, challenges in developing EN and its utility in safeguarding the industrial workers' life have been described. Further, gap analysis among previously developed EN, contemporary EN and wireless sensor network (WSN) is elaborated. It will facilitate future researchers for better selection of sensors and PR technologies while developing EN. Detection of these toxic chemicals/pollutants and the diagnosis of a disease is a first step in efficiently controlling their contamination and spread, respectively. Various analytical techniques are available to detect and determine toxic chemicals/pathogens, including liquid chromatography, HPLC, mass spectroscopy, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. However, these sensing strategies have some drawbacks such as tedious sample pretreatment and preparation, the requirement for skilled technicians, and dependence on large laboratory-based instruments. Alternatively, biosensors, especially paper-based sensors, could be used extensively and are a cost-effective alternative to conventional laboratory testing. They can improve accessibility to testing to identify chemicals and pollutants, especially in developing countries. Due to its low cost, abundance, easy disposal (by incineration, for example) and biocompatible nature, paper is considered a versatile material for the development of environmentally friendly electrochemical/optical (bio) sensor devices. This review presents an overview of sensing platforms constructed from paper, pointing out the main merits and demerits of paper-based sensing systems, their fabrication techniques, and the different optical/electrochemical detection techniques that they exploit.

Precipitation partitioning in arid and semiarid environments is not well understood due to scanty precipitation, its temporal distribution, and the lack/absence of adequate measurements of the hydrometeorological components. Simulation methods have the potential to bridge the data gap, thereby providing a window to estimate the water balance components. The present investigation evaluates the water balance components of a typical watershed situated in the southeastern Mediterranean for the period 1979 through 2019 using daily meteorological data and a grid spacing of 250 m. Generated runoff results were commensurate with corresponding values obtained using the SWAT model. Computed groundwater recharge is also compatible with recharge values calculated using the chloride mass balance method. Results show that average runoff and groundwater recharge for the entire period was ⁓24 mm a -1 and 19 mm a -1 , giving a precipitation ratio of 9.5% and 7.5%, respectively. Substantial interannual variability in the water balance components was observed during the study period which reflected the significant precipitation fluctuations typifying the Eastern Mediterranean. Results show that the period extending from 1998/1999 through 2018/2019 witnessed an 18% drop in annual precipitation, while surface runoff and groundwater recharge experienced a reduction of ⁓34% and ⁓67%, respectively. Although groundwater recharge is a complex function of numerous meteorological and geological factors, the NDVI can provide an excellent indicator of groundwater recharge in marginal Mediterranean environments. This is highly beneficial in areas where climate records are scanty or absent. A method of digital colorimetric determination of ammonium and nitrate in soils is proposed. The method is based on corresponding photometric procedures of ammonium and nitrate determination after potassium chloride extraction from soil samples. Ammonium is determined as an indophenol dye, and nitrate is determined as an azo dye. The original procedures were modified to overcome the lower sensitivity of the digital colorimetric method. For ammonium determination, the time required for the reaction to proceed completely was studied. Along with the use of a 96-well microplate protected from ambient light by a special frame, mathematical correction of scattered radiation using black ink and taking the images by a scanner in transmission mode without any post-processing, the resulting colorimetric methods proved to provide accuracy and sensitivity close to those of the spectrophotometric method, and the overall analysis speed for tens of samples was even higher. Limits of detection and quantitation for NO 3 - were 0.42 and 1.4 mg/kg, and for NH 4 + , they were 1.1 and 3.7 mg/kg, which is lower than for standard methods. Selecting suitable Megacity Solid Waste Disposal (MSWD) sites is a challenging task in densely populated deltas of developing countries, exacerbated by limited public awareness about waste management. One of the major environmental concerns in Dhaka City, the world's densest megacity, is the presence of dumps close to surface water bodies resources. This study employed the Geographic Information System (GIS)-Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) framework to integrate geomorphological (slope and flow accumulation), geological (lithological and lineament), hydrogeological (depth to groundwater table and surface waterbody), socioeconomic (Land use land cover, distance to settlement, road, and airport), and climatological (wind direction) determinants, coupled by land-use and hydro-environmental analyses, to map optimal dumps (MSWD O) sites. The resulting preliminary (MSWD P ) map revealed 15 potential landfill areas, covering approximately 5237 hectares (ha). Combining statistical analysis of restricted areas (settlements, water bodies, land use) with AHP-based ratings, the MSWD O map revealed two optimal locations (2285 ha). Additionally, the hydro-environmental analysis confirmed the unsuitability of northern sites due to shallow groundwater (< 5.43 m) and thin clay, leaving 11 options excluded. Sites 12 (Zone A, 2255 ha) and 15 (Zone B, 30 ha), with deeper groundwater tables and thicker clay layers, emerged as optimal choices for minimizing environmental risks and ensuring effective long-term waste disposal. This study successfully integrates remote sensing, geospatial data, and GIS-AHP modeling to facilitate the development of sustainable landfill strategies in similar South Asian delta megacities. Surface water pollution is a critical and urgent global issue that demands immediate attention. Surface water plays a crucial role in supporting and sustaining life on the earth, but unfortunately, till now, we have less understanding of its spatial and temporal dynamics of discharge and storage variations at a global level. The contamination of surface water arises from various sources, classified into point and non-point sources. Point sources are specific, identifiable origins of pollution that release pollutants directly into water bodies through pipes or channels, allowing for easier identification and management, e.g., industrial discharges, sewage treatment plants, and landfills. However, non-point sources originate from widespread activities across expansive areas and present challenges due to its diffuse nature and multiple pathways of contamination, e.g., agricultural runoff, urban storm water runoff, and atmospheric deposition. Excessive accumulation of heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, pesticides, chlorination by-products, pharmaceutical products in surface water through different pathways threatens food quality and safety. As a result, there is an urgent need for developing and designing new tools for identifying and quantifying various environmental contaminants. In this context, chemical and biological sensors emerge as fascinating devices well-suited for various environmental applications. Global nuclear power is surging ahead in its quest for global carbon neutrality, eyeing an anticipated installed capacity of 436 GW for coastal nuclear power plants by 2040. As these plants operate, they emit substantial amounts of warm water into the ocean, known as thermal discharge, to regulate the temperature of their nuclear reactors. This discharge has the potential to elevate the temperature of the surrounding seawater, potentially influencing the marine ecosystem in the discharge vicinity. Therefore, our study area is on the Qinshan and Jinqimen Nuclear Power Plants in China, employing a blend of Landsat 8/9, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery to gather sea surface temperature (SST) data. In situ measurements validate the temperature data procured through remote sensing. Leveraging these SST observations alongside hydrodynamic and meteorological data from field measurements, we input them into the MIKE 3 model to prognosticate the three-dimensional (3D) spatial distribution and temperature elevation resulting from thermal discharge. The findings reveal that (1) satellite remote sensing can instantly acquire the horizontal distribution of thermal discharge, but with a spatial resolution much lower than that of UAV. The spatial resolution of UAV is higher, but the imaging efficiency of UAV is only 1/40,000 of that of satellite remote sensing. (2) Numerical simulation models can predict the 3D spatial distribution of thermal discharge. Although UAV and satellite remote sensing cannot directly obtain the 3D spatial distribution of thermal discharge, using remotely sensed SST as the temperature field input for the MIKE 3 model can reduce the quantity of measured temperature data and lower the cost of numerical simulation. Environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring, a rapidly advancing technique for assessing biodiversity and ecosystem health, offers a noninvasive approach for detecting and quantifying species from various environmental samples. In this review, a comprehensive overview of current eDNA collection and detection technologies is provided, emphasizing the necessity for standardization and automation in aquatic ecological monitoring. Furthermore, the intricacies of water bodies, from streams to the deep sea, and the associated challenges they pose for eDNA capture and analysis are explored. The paper delineates three primary eDNA survey methods, namely, bringing back water, bringing back filters, and bringing back data, each with specific advantages and constraints in terms of labor, transport, and data acquisition. Additionally, innovations in eDNA sampling equipment, including autonomous drones, subsurface samplers, and in-situ filtration devices, and their applications in monitoring diverse taxa are discussed. Moreover, recent advancements in species-specific detection and eDNA metabarcoding are addressed, highlighting the integration of novel techniques such as CRISPR-Cas and nanopore sequencing that enable precise and rapid detection of biodiversity. The implications of environmental RNA and epigenetic modifications are considered for future applications in providing nuanced ecological data. Lastly, the review stresses the critical role of standardization and automation in enhancing data consistency and comparability for robust long-term biomonitoring. This study aimed to measure spatial and temporal distributions of total phenolic compounds and their ecological and health hazards using UV-vis spectrophotometers as a low-cost, fast, simple method in water and sediments collected from Timsah Lake, Suez Canal, Egypt, 2022. Also, assessing highly adaptive fungal species associated with contamination is designed. Due to human and environmental activities and industrial waste discharges, Timsah Lake is increasingly threatened by all kinds of pollutants. The results indicated that the seasonal concentration means of the phenolic compounds were winter (0.229) > spring (0.161) > summer (0.124) > autumn (0.131) mg/l and winter (3.08) > summer (2.66) mg/g in water and sediment samples, respectively. The result has shown that the phenol concentrations in all stations were more than 0.005 and 0.1 mg/l for Egyptian National Standards and World Health Organization (WHO) for drinking water but less than the limits of 1 mg/l for wastewater. Notably, the fungi recorded the highest counts during spring, totaling 397 colonies/100 ml of water and 842 colonies/gram of sediment. Four isolates of fungi were identified and deposited in the GenBank database by Aspergillus terreus, Aspergillus terreus, Penicillium roqueforti, and Penicillium rubens under accession numbers OR401933, OR402837, OR402878, and OR424729, respectively. Moreover, ecological risk (RQ) for the total phenolic compounds was > 1 in all investigated stations for water and sediments. The hazard quotient is HQ < 1 in all seasons in water and sediments except winter. The hazard index (HI) in water and sediments for children is higher than for adults. It can be concluded that the low-cost, fast, simple method for determining phenolic content in water and sediment samples, using UV-vis spectrophotometry, was useful for predicting the reactivates of a wide variety of phenol and their derivatives. Furthermore, it can be concluded that Periodic assessments of water quality and strict regulations are necessary to safeguard this vital resource from pollution and ensure the well-being of future generations. The division and evaluation of data series used in monitoring drought into different time intervals is a practical approach to detecting the spatial and temporal extent of drought spread. This study aimed to determine meteorological drought's spatial and temporal distribution using overlapping and consecutive periods and cycles of the standardized precipitation index (SPI) time series in the Mediterranean region, Turkey. In the scope of the research, SPI values for the SPI12, SPI6 (1), and SPI6 (2) seasons were calculated for consecutive and overlapping hydrological years (1978-1998/21 years, 1978-2008/31 years, and 1978-2018/41 years) at 28 meteorological stations. Autocorrelation, Mann-Kendall, and Sen slope trend tests were applied at a 5% significance level for each season (SPI12, SPI6 (1), and SPI6 (2)) and different time scales (21, 31, and 41 years). For each season and period, maps of the SPI drought class, average formation of drought class, Mann-Kendall (MK) trend, and Sen's slope (SS) trend test statistics for the Mediterranean region were obtained, and the spatial distribution rate of trends was determined by drawing hypsometric curves. Changes in drought occurrence at different time scales were thoroughly evaluated with the changing length of data recording. Consequently, it was determined that the mild wet (MIW) and mild drought (MID) classes dominate the study area in the Mediterranean region. Significant and nonstationary changes detected in extreme wet and drought occurrences (extreme wet, EW; severe wet, SW; extreme drought, ED; severe drought, SD) were found to pose a risk in the study area. It was observed that there were spatially and temporally insignificant decreasing drought trends in the Mediterranean basin, considering that the time scales of these trends slowed down. Despite a nonsignificant trend from the MID drought class to the MIW drought class, it is predicted that the MIW and MID classes will maintain their dominance in the Mediterranean region. The study attempted to evaluate the agricultural soil quality using the Soil Quality Index (SQI) model in two Community Development Blocks, Ausgram-II and Memari-II of Purba Bardhaman District. Total 104 soil samples were collected (0-20 cm depth) from each Block to analyse 13 parameters (bulk density, soil porosity, soil aggregate stability, water holding capacity, infiltration rate, available nitrogen, available phosphorous, available potassium, soil pH, soil organic carbon, electrical conductivity, soil respiration and microbial biomass carbon) in this study. The Integrated Quality Index (IQI) was applied using the weighted additive approach and non-linear scoring technique to retain the Minimum Data Set (MDS). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identified that SAS, BD, available K, pH, available N, and available P were the key contributing parameters to SQI in Ausgram-II. In contrast, WHC, SR, available N, pH, and SAS contributed the most to SQI in Memari-II. Results revealed that Ausgram-II (0.97) is notably higher SQI than Memari-II (0.69). In Ausgram-II, 99.72% of agricultural lands showed very high SQI (Grade I), whereas, in Memari-II, 49.95% of lands exhibited a moderate SQI (Grade III) and 49.90% showed a high SQI (Grade II). Sustainable Yield Index (SYI), Sensitivity Index (SI) and Efficiency Ratio (ER) were used to validate the SQIs. A positive correlation was observed between SQI and paddy ( R 2  = 0.82 & 0.72) and potato yield (R 2  = 0.71 & 0.78) in Ausgram-II and Memari-II Block, respectively. Metal pollution in water, soil, and vegetation is an emerging environmental issue. Therefore, this study investigated the abundance of heavy metals (HMs) within roots and shoots of native plant species i.e., Bromus pectinatus, Cynodon dactylon, Poa annua, Euphorbia heliscopa, Anagallis arvensis, and Stellaria media grown in the adjoining area of municipal wastewater channels of a Pakistani city of Abbottabad. HMs concentrations (mg L -1 ) in municipal wastewater were: chromium (Cr) (0.55) > nickel (Ni) (0.09) > lead (Pb) (0.07) > cadmium (Cd) (0.03). Accumulation of HMs in both roots and shoots of plant species varied as B. pectinatus > C. dactylon > P. annua > E. heliscopa > A. arvensis > S. media. Irrespective of the plant species, roots exhibited higher concentrations of HMs than shoots. Higher amount of Cr (131.70 mg kg -1 ) was detected in the roots of B. pectinatus and the lowest amount (81 mg kg -1 ) in A. arvensis, Highest Cd concentration was found in the shoot of B. pectinatus and the lowest in the E. heliscopa. The highest concentration of Ni was found in the roots of S. media (37.40 mg kg -1 ) and the shoot of C. dactylon (15.70 mg kg -1 ) whereas the lowest Ni concentration was achieved in the roots of A. arvensis (12.10 mg kg -1 ) and the shoot of E. heliscopa (5.90 mg kg -1 ). The concentration of HMs in individual plant species was less than 1000 mg kg -1 . Considering the higher values (> 1) of biological concentration factor (BCF), biological accumulation co-efficient (BAC), and translocation factor (TF), B. pectinatus and S. media species showed greater potential for HMs accumulation than other species. Printable biosensors have gained numerous exciting advancements towards downstream applications in fundamental biomedical research, healthcare, food safety, environmental monitoring and governance, and to name a few. Particularly, paper-based printable biosensors have gained rising popularity in providing affordable platforms due to their merits, such as cost-effective, accurate, simple, and efficient detection of diseases for clinical diagnosis. In addition to advantages and opportunities in point-of-care detection, printable biosensors are also facing challenges. Herein, this review aims to provide a systematic summary of the development of printable biosensors, with a special focus on paper-based printable biosensors. Different types of substrates for printable biosensors are highlighted with a focus on paper substrates which have superior properties like low-cost, simple, flexible, lightweight, recyclable, etc. In addition, current printing technologies to fabricate paper-based sensors, including wax printing, photolithography, screen printing, inkjet printing, and laser printing summarize, are discussed, together with strategies for biomolecular fabrication on substrates and transducers. Finally, we also discuss the challenges and possible future perspectives, hoping to provide researchers and clinicians with informative insights into paper-based printable biosensors for smart and effective point-of-care detection. The possibility of analyzing the general and functional diversity of the ecosystem is considered, as is unambiguous interpretation of the results obtained based on our work experience and previously obtained data. The prospects for studying small mammals without removal from the wild are discussed. We discuss distinguishing in a sample the resident component, which makes it possible to characterize local resource flows, and the nonresident component, dependent on the state of the territory as a whole. A description of the capture–mark–recapture protocol, methods for assessing spatial activity, calculating the density of the resident population per unit area, and the completeness of species richness estimate is provided. The estimates of animal numbers per unit of trapping effort in pooled sample, the population density of residents, and the index of the nonresident flow are compared. The possibility of analyzing the resource flows in "historical," "novel," and "hybrid" ecosystems, as well as using data to analyze the resilience of the ecosystem and detect the threshold point, is considered. This study aimed to monitor long-term land use dynamics for understanding the natural forest integrity and intactness of the Rajiv Gandhi (Nagarhole) Tiger Reserve (RTR) pre- and post-declarations as TR. We employed multi-source data from Survey of India Toposheets (1:50 k), Landsat-7, and Sentinel-2A along with Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) vegetation canopy height (10 m) data, a high-spatial resolution CORONA (1970) images and temporal Google Earth Pro images for mapping and validation. To map vegetation type, land use and land cover (LULC) transitions, and fragmentation (1980-2022) we employed a hybrid classification approach. This study also analyzed decadal forest dynamics within TRs using India's State of Forest Reports (ISFR). Findings reveal significant forest fragmentation and habitat loss due to anthropogenic activities in the TR. Mono-plantations (teak and eucalyptus) were found inside TR, while the buffer (1 km) was occupied mainly with coffee and orange plantations which indicates the prevalence of human footprint. The overall accuracy of the current period (2022) is 92.0% with a kappa coefficient value of 0.90. These plantations were established during the British colonial period (early 1900s) for commercial purposes by clearing natural forests. The present study highlights that mono-plantations have not transitioned into natural forests even after a century. This lack of transformation could potentially compromise the integrity of the native forest. Despite its ecological significance, RTR has experienced disturbance due to human footprint. Hence, there is a need for an action plan to protect this vital landscape by replacing mono-plantations with suitable species to preserve the integrity of the forest. These issues extend beyond the protected areas, impacting surrounding regions and require regular monitoring. The fundamental consequences of global warming include an upsurge in the intensity and frequency of temperature extremes. This study provides an insight into historical trends and projected changes in extreme temperatures on annual and seasonal scales across "Balochistan, Pakistan". Historical trends are analyzed through the Mann Kendal test, and extreme temperatures (Tmax and Tmin) are evaluated using generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution for historical period (1991-2020) from the observational data and the two projected periods as near-future (2041-2070) and far-future (2071-2100) using a six-member bias-corrected ensemble of regional climate models (RCMs) projections from the coordinate regional downscaling experiment (CORDEX) based on the worst emission scenario (RCP8.5). The evaluation of historical temperature trends suggests that Tmax generally increase on yearly scale and give mixed signals on seasonal scale (winter, spring, summer, and autumn); however, Tmin trends gave mixed signals at both yearly and seasonal scale. Compared to the historical period, the return levels are generally expected to be higher for Tmax and Tmin during the both projection periods in the order as far-future > near-future > historical on yearly and seasonal basis; however, the changes in Tmin are more evident. Station-averaged anomalies of + 1.9 °C and + 3.6 °C were estimated in 100-year return levels for yearly Tmax for near-future and far-future, respectively, while the anomalies in Tmin were found to be + 3.5 °C and + 4.8 °C which suggest the intensified heatwaves but milder colder extreme in future. The more water quality evaluation indicators, the greater the amount of water quality evaluation calculation. Under the requirements of evaluation accuracy, the index screening method is usually used to optimize water quality evaluation index to reduce the calculation amount of water quality evaluation. Taking Mengcheng Gate of Guo River as an example, the information sensitivity index screening method was used to simplify the water quality evaluation index system from 17 to 12 indicators. The variable fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method was used to compare and evaluate the original index system and the optimal index system. The results showed that the water quality results of the optimal index system are consistent with the original index evaluation results. And the water quality of Mengcheng Gate is basically stable at class I level. The information sensitivity method reduced the number of indicators by 29.41%. The error between the water quality evaluation results based on the optimal indicators and the original indicators is less than 10%. The maximum error, minimum error, and average error are 8.92%, 0.08%, and 2.46%, respectively. It revealed that the information sensitivity method can eliminate the information redundancy while retaining the information of the original index system. It can also reduce the calculation amount of water quality evaluation in the future. The variable fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method can reasonably reflect the complex nonlinear relationship between water quality index and water quality category. This accuracy has practical significance for guiding the optimization of water quality evaluation index system, improving the efficiency of water quality evaluation. In this research, three numerical groundwater flow models, developed and calibrated from three equally plausible conceptual models over the Nasia Basin, have been used to assess groundwater resources variations over a transient period. The use of multiple numerical models reduces the effect of uncertainties in conceptual model formulation. All the three calibrated numerical models indicate an increasing trend of groundwater recharge and storage over the period of the groundwater level monitoring. This suggests that the prevailing erratic climatic conditions in the area are conducive for increasing groundwater recharge and storage in the terrain. The high-intensity, short duration rainfall patterns, attending climate change in the basin, enhance high levels of infiltration and percolation, leading to steadily increasing groundwater recharge. Groundwater recharge estimates from each of the models over the transient period appear to reflect the pattern of seasonal variations in rainfall in the region. Data from the models indicates a significant role of baseflow in sustaining perennial streamflow in the area. This presents a significant development in terms of groundwater-based adaptation projects, especially in agriculture. The trend of groundwater recharge in the Nasia Basin is in sync with regional groundwater storage variations estimated from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite data collected and processed over the Volta Basin. At the Volta Basin level, groundwater storage variations indicate a strong positive trend of increasing groundwater recharge from 2002 (beginning of the GRACE mission) to 2022 (end point of the data used for this research). Analysis of the GRACE data suggests that there is a cumulative increase in groundwater storage by 30 cm, representing approximately 120 km 3 of groundwater over the period in the basin. This translates into approximately 15 mm/year of groundwater storage increase. Thus, at both the regional and local levels, groundwater appears to be responding positively to the impacts of erratic rainfall patterns observed in the area recently. The high-intensity, short duration rainfall patterns appear to favor significant groundwater recharge, resulting in a strong positive groundwater storage signal. Changes in glacier area, glacial lakes, debris cover, and geomorphological features such as debris fans have a significant impact on glacial dynamics. Therefore, precise and timely observation and tracking of glacier surface changes is a necessity. The availability of high spatial resolution remote sensing images has made it viable to analyse the glacier surface changes at a local level. However, with an increase in spatial resolution, the spectral variability increases, giving rise to additional challenges (such as false changes and misregistration) in the change detection process. These challenges can preferably be dealt with using an object-based change detection (OBCD) approach rather than the conventional pixel-based change detection approach. Therefore, this study has proposed an OBCD methodology using high-spatial-resolution remote sensing images to detect changes in glacier features. Variability in glacier features has been further analysed by associating it with important climate variables, that is, air temperature and precipitation. As a case study, the changes in Gangotri Glacier (Uttarakhand Himalayas in India) features have been studied using high-spatial-resolution WorldView-2 and Linear Imaging Self-Scanning System (LISS)-4 images for a 3-year period 2011-2014. The spectral correspondences between glacier surface and non-glacier surface have been handled by considering brightness temperature and slope as ancillary data to improvise their distinction. In this paper, the behavior of the Bi-Material Cantilever (B-MaC) response deflection upon fluidic loading was experimentally studied and modeled for bilayer strips. A B-MaC consists of a strip of paper adhered to a strip of tape. When fluid is introduced, the paper expands while the tape does not, which causes the structure to bend due to strain mismatch, similar to the thermal loading of bi-metal thermostats. The main novelty of the paper-based bilayer cantilevers is the mechanical properties of two different types of material layers, a top layer of sensing paper and a bottom layer of actuating tape, to create a structure that can respond to moisture changes. When the sensing layer absorbs moisture, it causes the bilayer cantilever to bend or curl due to the differential swelling between the two layers. The portion of the paper strip that gets wet forms an arc, and as the fluid advances and fully wets the B-MaC, the entire B-MaC assumes the shape of the initial arc. This study showed that paper with higher hygroscopic expansion forms an arc with a smaller radius of curvature, whereas thicker tape with a higher Young's modulus forms an arc with a larger radius of curvature. The results showed that the theoretical modeling could accurately predict the behavior of the bilayer strips. The significance of paper-based bilayer cantilevers lies in their potential applications in various fields, such as biomedicine, and environmental monitoring. In summary, the novelty and significance of paper-based bilayer cantilevers lie in their unique combination of sensing and actuating capabilities using a low-cost and environmentally friendly material. A three-channel paper-based chip was utilized to detect aluminum (Al) ions on a smartphone platform by the chromogenic method. The color change after Al3+ detection is represented with △E which was photographed and calculated by app on smartphone. The detection limit is 0.05 mg/L and the detection range is from 0.05 mg/L to 10 mg/L which indicates the application potential in the field of biochemical detection. This new paper-based sensing method and smartphone-based portable detection platform are simple, low-cost, fast, and highly sensitive, and provides a potential application for on-site, visual detection of ions and even other substances. The use of paper as a multifunctional material in electrochemical sensing has been intensively explored over the last decade. The combination among different kinds of paper as well as their coupling with different electrochemical cell configurations have been demonstrated, disclosing innovative sensing performances and features that are still to be fully investigated. This ongoing research has found applications in a variety of fields, including the biomedical, agri-food, security, and environmental ones, thanks to the high versatility and adaptability of the paper material. In this review, we report a critical and comparative analysis of electrochemical devices based on paper published within 2010–2021 and applied for the detection of pollutants of environmental interest in fresh water, seawater, and other real environmental matrices. Several paper types, from common office paper to Whatman filter paper with different filtering grades, were proved to be useful in this field. In detail, the multifarious roles played by the paper are discussed, highlighting how the paper can be a suitable material for electrochemical sensing while being capable of simplifying the measurement of complex real matrices or realizing programmable origami-like structures. Among the most important pollutants, a special focus is dedicated to the emerging pollutants. Furthermore, the unique advantages achieved by the paper have been analyzed and highlighted, reporting the future perspectives regarding the use of this surprising material.

Assessing the vulnerability of different sectors to climate change has great importance in determining the appropriate adaptation measures to deal with climate change impacts on a river basin scale. In this research, using a framework for modeling the agronomic system vulnerability to climate change, vulnerability assessment under different scenarios was conducted for the Gorganrud River Basin located in the agro-ecological zone of the Caspian coastal plain of Iran. Considering exposure, susceptibility, and lack of resilience components, 12 indicators were chosen and quantified for both agronomic-environmental and socio-economic aspects. The SSM-iCrop2 model was used to simulate crop yield under current and climate change scenarios across the basin. The analysis indicates that in the current condition, the vulnerability level is different across the watersheds of the Gorganrud River Basin. By applying the climate change scenarios, agronomic system vulnerability would increase in the basin to some extent, particularly in Madarsu and Tilabad watersheds attributed with high vulnerability (0.63 and 0.61, respectively). This justifies the need to implement adaptation plans for encountering water shortage in the future. The analysis also suggests that the vulnerability of the agronomic system for adaptation scenarios characterized by less water consumption under climate change conditions is going to be slightly different from the vulnerability under the climate change scenarios. Due to an increase in agronomic system vulnerability under climate change scenarios, coupled with the fact that most watersheds (except Chehelchai, Nardin, and Narmab) are moderately vulnerable even under current conditions, policymakers and planners should promote crop and livelihood diversification programs aiming to prevent an increase in agronomic vulnerability., (© 2024. Treating waste as a resource can provide many social and economic benefits and develop policies accordingly. In this study, the relationship between municipal waste, income, human capital, material footprint, consumption and urban population is analyzed with panel data models within the framework of the Kuznets curve, using the data for the period of 1995 - 2018 for 22 OECD countries. Various economic, demographic and human variables that are thought to have an impact on municipal waste generation were added to the models created with cubic functional forms. The analysis results show that the relationship between municipal waste and income is inverted N-shaped. In line with expectations, the increase in human capital reduces the amount of waste per capita. The urbanization rate causes a higher increase in the amount of waste per capita compared to the population. Real consumption per capita and material footprint similarly have a positive effect on waste. The aim of this study was to quantify the effect of land use change (LUC) implemented to meet nutrient load targets for a freshwater lake in New Zealand. We used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model in combination with a non-parametric statistical test to determine whether afforestation of 15% of a subcatchment area was adequate to meet assigned nutrient load targets. A regional management authority set nutrient load targets of reduction in total nitrogen (TN) by 0.9 t yr -1 and reduction in total phosphorus (TP) by 0.05 t yr -1 to avoid eutrophication in the receiving waters of a freshwater lake. The load reduction was designed to be achieved through 200 ha of LUC from pasture to trees. Analysis of nutrient loads before, during, and following LUC shows that a 15% increase in forest cover decreased the annual flow (7.2%), TP load (33.3%), and TN load (13.1%). As flow and water quality observations were discrete and at irregular intervals, we used a parametric test and the SWAT model as different lines of evidence to demonstrate the effect of afforestation on flow and water quality. Assessing drought is crucial for effective water resources management and the development of mitigation strategies. Drought indices serve as indispensable tools in this evaluation process, and choosing an appropriate index is vital for accurate drought assessment. The characteristics and classification of drought depend entirely on the chosen index. Based on the existing literature, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) are the most commonly and widely used indices, and there is a significant need for a comprehensive comparison between SPI and SPEI to understand their differences and implications for drought assessment. This research aims to compare SPI and SPEI based on drought indices, characteristics, and classifications using the innovative drought classification matrix (IDCM) for spatiotemporal drought evaluation, and the comparison process is done for events and monthly scales. Also, it aims to investigate the comparison between SPEI obtained from in situ meteorological stations and from the SPEI database. The application and the comparison are presented for Istanbul city between 1951 and 2020. The results show similar variations and high correlation (more than 0.65) between SPI and SPEI. For drought characteristics, there is no consistent relationship between SPI and SPEI at the drought event scale. The outcomes revealed that approximately 60% of the months exhibit consistent drought classifications between the two indices. Finally, it shows a significant difference between SPEI based on in situ meteorological stations and satellite data. Brazil has historically invested few resources in its transport infrastructure, leaving gaps and reducing its efficiency. The country presents a high dependence on road transport, which results in increased operational costs and higher greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Consequently, the performance of cargo transportation in Brazil has been deteriorating, accompanied by a rise in the consumption of fossil fuels and noteworthy levels of GHG emissions. This article assesses the carbon intensity of soybean transport operations within Brazil. Utilizing a network equilibrium model, this study estimated the soybean transportation flows that minimize the total cost of transporting this product across the origins and destinations within the grain handling system. The modeling also calculated the GHG emissions in transportation. The results show that the transportation of soybeans produced 2.74 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually, with road transport accounting for 81.7% of these emissions. The state of Mato Grosso, responsible for 44.08 kg CO2 equivalent per tonne of soybeans transported, contributed almost 49% of the total emissions due to the extensive distances involved. In contrast, states like Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, located closer to southern ports, exhibited the lowest emissions, with rates of 11.55 kg CO2 eq/t and 12.52 kg CO2 eq/t, respectively. This is the first report on high pesticide tolerance displayed by the microbiota isolated from the sediments of two high-altitude lakes, located in the Singalila National Park, Singalila Ridge of the Himalayas. Given the remote location of these lakes, direct exposure to chemical pesticides is highly unlikely. However, the high tolerance to commonly used pesticides exhibited, i.e. up to 250 mg/ml, suggests repeated exposure and contamination of the lakes. Microbial growth in the presence of varying concentrations of the pesticides, namely, emamectin benzoate, thiamethoxam, quinalphos, deltamethrin, spiromesifen, flubendiamide, monocrotophos, fipronil, fenazaquin and phorate, was tested. Results showed resistance to all pesticides except fenazaquin and fipronil, up to 250 mg/ml. For the latter two, tolerance was displayed up to a concentration of 40 mg/ml. Tolerance may potentially result from the transport and deposition of pesticides from nearby locations, particularly the tea plantations of Darjeeling and Eastern Nepal. This may create great ecological risks as these lakes are an important water source for endemic wildlife of this protected area. They also hold great significance to the religious sentiment of the local tribes who worship these lakes as sacred. In this study, we applied a multivariate logistic regression model to identify deforested areas and evaluate the current effects on environmental variables in the Brazilian state of Rondônia, located in the southwestern Amazon region using data from the MODIS/Terra sensor. The variables albedo, temperature, evapotranspiration, vegetation index, and gross primary productivity were analyzed from 2000 to 2022, with surface type data from the PRODES project as the dependent variable. The accuracy of the models was evaluated by the parameters area under the curve (AUC), pseudo R 2 , and Akaike information criterion, in addition to statistical tests. The results indicated that deforested areas had higher albedo (25%) and higher surface temperatures (3.2 °C) compared to forested areas. There was a significant reduction of the EVI (16%), indicating water stress, and a decrease in GPP (18%) and ETr (23%) due to the loss of plant biomass. Uganda in East Africa is experiencing highly variable rainfall which is exacerbated by temperatures warming at faster rates. This study analyzed rainfall and temperature patterns in comparison with the potential evaporation transpiration rates (PETs) for parts of Central, Western, Southern, and Southwestern Uganda for varying periods from 1981 to 2022. For rainfall onset date (OD), threshold of 0.85 mm for a rainy day, rainfall of 20 mm accumulated over 5 days with at least 3 rain days, and dry spell not exceeding 9 days in the next 30 days were used. The rainfall cessation dates (RCDs) are determined when water balance (WB) falls below 5 mm in 7 days in the last month of the expected season (May and December) for the first and second season, respectively. Standardized rainfall anomaly was utilized to show seasonal and annual rainfall variability. Pearson's correlation (r) coefficient was used to show the relationship between weather variables (rainfall, temperature) and PET at five rainfall stations. Results showed highly varied onset and cessation dates for March-May (MAM) seasonal rainfall compared to those of September-December (SOND). Results showed highly variable onset and cessation of rainfall over the region and statistically significantly increasing trends in both maximum and minimum temperatures across the region, with the highest rate of increase of maximum and minimum temperature of 0.70 and 0.65 °C per decade respectively. Moreover, the maximum temperature and PET showed strong positive correlation coefficient (r) that ranged from 0.76 to 0.90 across the regions, which likely contribute to excess evaporation from the surfaces, soil moisture deficits that negatively affect plant biomass production, low crop yields and food insecurity. PET and rainfall revealed insignificant statistical negative correlation as indicated by the correlation coefficient ranging from - 0.04 to - 0.22. In this study, spatiotemporal analysis of forest fires in Turkiye was undertaken, with a specific focus on the large-scale atmospheric systems responsible for causing these fires. For this purpose, long-term variations in forest fires were classified based on the occurrence types (i.e. natural/lightning, negligence/inattention, arson, accident, unknown). The role of large-scale atmospheric circulations causing natural originated forest fires was investigated using NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis sea level pressure, and surface wind products for the selected episodes. According to the main results, Mediterranean (MeR), Aegean (AR), and Marmara (MR) regions of Turkiye are highly susceptible to forest fires. Statistically significant number of forest fires in the MeR and MR regions are associated with global warming trend of the Eastern Mediterranean Basin. In monthly distribution, forest fires frequently occur in the MeR part of Turkiye during September, August, and June months, respectively, and heat waves are responsible for forest fires in 2021. As a consequence of the extending summer Asiatic monsoon to the inner parts of Turkiye and the location of Azores surface high over Balkan Peninsula result in atmospheric blocking and associated calm weather conditions in the MeR (e.g. Mugla and Antalya provinces). When this blocking continues for a long time, southerly winds on the back slopes of the Taurus Mountains create a foehn effect, calm weather conditions and lack of moisture in the soil of Antalya and Mugla settlements trigger the formation of forest fires., (© 2024. Groundwater serves a range of essential functions such as supplying drinking water, facilitating agricultural practices, and supporting industrial processes. This study examines with multiple methods the quality of groundwater in the agricultural region of Dzira, Algeria. By collecting 38 groundwater samples of different wells and boreholes, valuable awareness of the aptness of groundwater for irrigation in this arid landscape was gained. Most wells met Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) criteria for the total dissolved solids (TDS) and the potential of hydrogen pH, but some areas had higher mineral content and electrical conductivity. Results show significant TDS variations, with 10.81% of wells exceeding limits and acceptable pH levels. Elevated EC values in 67.57% of wells show high salinity, affecting soil and plant growth. Major ions such as Mg 2+ and SO 4 - exceeded FAO standards in 43.24% and 64.86% of wells, respectively, highlighting substantial mineral content in the groundwater. Suitability indices reveal that most wells pose low sodium hazards and are generally suitable for irrigation, though some areas face moderate to high restrictions. The irrigation water quality index (IWQI) ranged from 45.36 to 96.30, averaging 80.77, with 54.04% classified as "low restriction," suitable for sandy soils with good permeability but requiring caution on salt-sensitive soils. Hydrogeochemical analysis using principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) identifies rapid evaporite dissolution from Triassic saline formations, with a correlation matrix showing associations between TDS and Ca 2 ⁺, Mg 2 ⁺, Na⁺, Cl⁻, and SO₄ 2 ⁻. This mineralization is likely from gypsum and halite. Zoning maps based on IWQI and other parameters depicted spatial variations in groundwater quality, guiding effective irrigation management strategies. Overall, the study underscores the importance of comprehensive water quality assessment for sustainable agriculture and emphasizes the need for targeted interventions to mitigate potential challenges associated with soil salinity and sodicity. To estimate a watershed's response to climate change, it is crucial to understand how human activities and climatic extremes have interacted over time. Over the last century, the Zarivar Lake watershed, Iran, has been subjected to various anthropogenic activates, including deforestation and inappropriate land-management practices alongside the implementation of conservation measures like check dams. To understand the effects of these changes on the magnitude of sediment, organic carbon (OC), and phosphorus supplies in a small sub-watershed connected to the lake over the last century, a lake sediment core was dated using 210 Pb ex and 137 Cs as geochronometers. The average mass accumulation rate (MAR), organic carbon accumulation rates (OCAR), and particulate phosphorus accumulation rates (PPAR) of the sediment core were determined to be 6498 ± 2475, 205 ± 85, and 8.9 ± 3.3 g m -2  year -1 , respectively. Between the late 1970s and early 1980s, accumulation rates were significantly higher than their averages at 7940 ± 3120, 220 ± 60, and 12.0 ± 2.8 g m -2  year -1 respectively. During this period, the watershed underwent extensive deforestation (12%) on steep slopes, coinciding with higher mean annual precipitations (more than double). Conversely, after 2009, when check dams were installed in the sub-watershed, the sediment load to the lake became negligible. The results of this research indicate that anthropogenic activities had a pronounced effect on MAR, OCAR, and PPAR, causing them to fluctuate from negligible amounts to values twice the averages over the last century, amplified by climatic factors. These results imply that implementing climate-smart watershed management strategies, such as constructing additional check dams and terraces, reinforcing restrictions on deforestation, and minimum tillage practices, can facilitate protection of lacustrine ecosystems under accelerating climate change conditions., (© 2024. Extreme PM 2.5 pollution has become a significant environmental problem in China in recent years, which is hazardous to human health and daily life. Noticing the importance of investigating the causes of extreme PM 2.5 pollution, this paper classifies cities across China into eight categories (four groups plus two scenarios) based on the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution using hourly station-level PM 2.5 concentration data, and a series of multi-choice models are employed to assess the probabilities that cities fall into different categories. Various factors such as precursor pollutants and socio-economic factors are considered after controlling for meteorological conditions in each model. It turns out that SO 2 concentration, NO 2 concentration, and population density are the top three factors contributing most to the log ratios. Moreover, in both left- and right-skewed cases, the influence of a one-unit increase of SO 2 concentration on the relative probability of cities falling into different groups shows an increasing trend, while those of NO 2 concentration show a decreasing trend. At the same time, the higher the extreme pollution level, the bigger the effect of SO 2 and NO 2 concentrations on the probability of cities falling into normalized scenarios. The multivariate logit model is used for prediction and policy simulations. In summary, by analyzing the influences of various factors and the heterogeneity of their influence patterns, this paper provides valuable insights in formulating effective emission reduction policies., (© 2024. Fetzara Lake, considered one of the most important wetlands in northeastern Algeria, was designated a Ramsar site in 2002. The waters in its watershed are affected by salinity, which influences their suitability for irrigation. To identify the factors influencing the quality of these surface waters, geochemical and statistical analyses were carried out on the basis of the results of chemical analyses of 51 samples collected, during two monitoring campaigns, from all the tributaries in the watershed. The findings show the dominance of three hydrochemical facies over the two campaigns: Na-Cl facies (55.17% and 22.73%) characterizes the waters water from Fetzara Lake outlet (drainage channel and wadi Meboudja), in relation to the influx of saliferous elements due to water evaporation in the lake. Ca-Mg-Cl (27.59% and 40.91%) and Ca-Mg-HCO 3 (13.79%. and 13.79%) facies characterize the waters of the remaining tributaries, reflecting the dissolution of carbonate formations and the alteration of the Edough metamorphic basement. Multivariate statistical analysis, using principal component analysis (PCA), shows three water types: highly mineralized (EC > 3000 µS/cm), moderately mineralized (1000 < EC < 3000 µS/cm), and weakly mineralized (EC < 1000 µS/cm). Evaporation and silicate weathering are the main mechanisms controlling water mineralization according to the different bivariate plots. Furthermore, cation exchange indices (CAI-I and CAI-II) reveal that these reactions involve the adsorption of Na + and K + onto clay minerals, as well as the simultaneous release of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ions. Finally, the various quality indices (SAR, %Na, RSC and KR) revealed that the water in 36% of tributaries is unsuitable for irrigation. These findings will provide important information on surface water quality in the study area, particularly for irrigation purposes, and will contribute to the thoughtful and sustainable management of this resource., (© 2024. Alluvial fans and deltas are two environments with different hydrochemical conditions. Their junction zones, as mixing environments, are variably influenced by different processes, leading to variable environmental conditions. The purpose of this study is to investigate groundwater quality in the junction zone of these environments in the northern part of the Jazmourian depression (known as the Rudbar plain) in southeastern Iran to determine the dominant processes, assess arsenic and fluoride health risks, and evaluate irrigation water quality. A total of 33 samples from deep drilled wells were taken, and the concentrations of major ions and elements were determined. Additionally, statistical and hydrochemical analyses were undertaken. The dominant processes in the delta are evaporation and ion exchange, while the dominant process in the fan environment is silicate hydrolysis. Among the samples, 26.7% were mainly affected by the delta, and 73.3% were mainly affected by fan conditions. Although the majority of groundwater samples were suitable for irrigation based on quality standards, a significant portion exceeded the acceptable level for Na%. Non-carcinogenic health risk assessments indicated that arsenic hazard risks exceeded thresholds in 63.3% of cases for children and 36% for adults. Carcinogenic health risks associated with arsenic and fluoride exceeded acceptable levels in 4 and 2 stations, respectively. This study aims to identify continuous water quality changes and identify fluorescence properties from urban rivers to marine zones. Various types of natural and anthropogenic sources derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) have been identified in this study. These include soil-derived DOM, plant remnants, and soluble particles produced when organic material partially decomposes and is released by microorganisms, such as bacteria, algae, and plants. DOM was characterized using a three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3DEEM), parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), and water quality parameters from the Buriganga River, Dhaka to Patenga Seaport, Chittagong, along with the Shitalakshya River, a small portion of the Padma River, and the Meghna River. To better understand the data analysis, the study area was divided into three central regions: urban industrial rivers, industrial estuarine rivers, and marine zones. In the urban industrial river, 3DEEM and PARAFAC identified five fluorophores (peaks: A, C, M, T, and T uv ) with five components: detergent-like, fulvic-like, tryptophan or protein-like, fulvic-like (C-type), and protein-like, which might originate from the industrial activities and sewage pollution. In the industrial estuarine river zone, three fluorophores have been identified (peaks: A, C, T uv ) with two known components, namely, fulvic acid (A-type) and fulvic acid (C-type), with an unknown photoproduct at Ex/Em = 295/368 (peak T uv ). Components in the industrial river zone may originate from terrestrial sources, indicating vegetation along the river. In the marine zone, four fluorophores have been identified (peaks: T uv , A, T, C) with two components, that is, protein- or tryptophan-like and humic acid-like from coral origin. The intensities of both fulvic-like and protein-like substances were high in urban industrial river water owing to industrial activity and sewage pollution. SUVA 254 suggests high aromaticity in all three regions, whereas the optical properties suggest that terrestrial and microbial components are present in the urban industrial and estuarine rivers. This further indicates that urban industrial river water quality is highly polluted. The lowest degradation potential index (DPI) in the marine zone might result from the presence of the highest number of dissolved solids in the water, and the highest DPI of industrial estuarine rivers explains the comparatively high presence of terrestrial-derived humic (A)- and humic (C)-like components in the ratio to the unknown photoproduct of mid-wavelength. PRACTITIONER POINTS: This study's uniqueness is a 220-km cruise from an urban river to a coastal seaport to analyze fluorescence properties. The study found that most water parameters were within the DoE standards, except for DO, which was consistently low. 3DEEM-PARAFAC identified five fluorophores linked to detergent, fulvic, and protein-like substances from sewage and industrial sources. Microplastic pollution has raised significant concerns among scientific communities and society in recent years due to its increase and lesser-known effects on the environment. To improve the knowledge of microplastic pollution in freshwater, we investigated microplastics in Anzali Wetland, a Ramsar site in northern Iran, as well as its nine main entering rivers. The extracted microplastics were characterized via visual identification, SEM-EDX, and μ-Raman methods. Microplastics (size range: 50-5000 μm) were found in all water and sediment samples with concentration of fibrous particles as well as polypropylene and polyethylene polymers. The mean concentration of microplastics in bottom sediment and surface water samples of the wetland was 301 ± 222 particles∙kg -1 d.w. and 235 ± 115 particles∙m -3 (0.23 particles∙L -1 ), respectively. The microplastic concentration in the central and eastern parts of the wetland was higher than in other areas; however, the mean concentrations revealed homogeneity across the wetland area. Water properties (dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, and salinity in water) did not affect the concentration of microplastic particles, though correlational analysis revealed a strong positive association between microplastic quantity and turbidity. There was a significant positive relationship between microplastic concentration and the percentage of clay in sediment samples. The quantity of microplastics in river water was higher than in wetland water, but the difference between the results was not significant. However, the quantity of microplastics in the river's littoral sediment was higher than in the bottom sediment of the wetland where the difference between the results was significant. Microplastic ecological risk assessment showed high potential ecological risk. Preparing for future environmental pressures requires projections of how relevant risks will change over time. Current regulatory models of environmental risk assessment (ERA) of pollutants such as pharmaceuticals could be improved by considering the influence of global change factors (e.g., population growth) and by presenting uncertainty more transparently. In this article, we present the development of a prototype object-oriented Bayesian network (BN) for the prediction of environmental risk for six high-priority pharmaceuticals across 36 scenarios: current and three future population scenarios, combined with infrastructure scenarios, in three Norwegian counties. We compare the risk, characterized by probability distributions of risk quotients (RQs), across scenarios and pharmaceuticals. Our results suggest that RQs would be greatest in rural counties, due to the lower development of current wastewater treatment facilities, but that these areas consequently have the most potential for risk mitigation. This pattern intensifies under higher population growth scenarios. With this prototype, we developed a hierarchical probabilistic model and demonstrated its potential in forecasting the environmental risk of chemical stressors under plausible demographic and management scenarios, contributing to the further development of BNs for ERA.
