PurposeThe best algorithm that was implemented on this Brazilian dataset was artificial immune system (AIS) algorithm. But the time and cost of this algorithm are high. Using asexual reproduction optimization (ARO) algorithm, the authors achieved better results in less time. So the authors achieved less cost in a shorter time. Their framework addressed the problems such as high costs and training time in credit card fraud detection. This simple and effective approach has achieved better results than the best techniques implemented on our dataset so far. The purpose of this paper is to detect credit card fraud using ARO.Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, the authors used ARO algorithm to classify the bank transactions into fraud and legitimate. ARO is taken from asexual reproduction. Asexual reproduction refers to a kind of production in which one parent produces offspring identical to herself. In ARO algorithm, an individual is shown by a vector of variables. Each variable is considered as a chromosome. A binary string represents a chromosome consisted of genes. It is supposed that every generated answer exists in the environment, and because of limited resources, only the best solution can remain alive. The algorithm starts with a random individual in the answer scope. This parent reproduces the offspring named bud. Either the parent or the offspring can survive. In this competition, the one which outperforms in fitness function remains alive. If the offspring has suitable performance, it will be the next parent, and the current parent becomes obsolete. Otherwise, the offspring perishes, and the present parent survives. The algorithm recurs until the stop condition occurs.FindingsResults showed that ARO had increased the AUC (i.e. area under a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve), sensitivity, precision, specificity and accuracy by 13%, 25%, 56%, 3% and 3%, in comparison with AIS, respectively. The authors achieved a high precision value indicating that if ARO detects a record as a fraud, with a high probability, it is a fraud one. Supporting a real-time fraud detection system is another vital issue. ARO outperforms AIS not only in the mentioned criteria, but also decreases the training time by 75% in comparison with the AIS, which is a significant figure.Originality/valueIn this paper, the authors implemented the ARO in credit card fraud detection. The authors compared the results with those of the AIS, which was one of the best methods ever implemented on the benchmark dataset. The chief focus of the fraud detection studies is finding the algorithms that can detect legal transactions from the fraudulent ones with high detection accuracy in the shortest time and at a low cost. That ARO meets all these demands.

IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) is the standard network layer protocol for achieving efficient routing in IPv6 over Low-Power Wireless Personal Area Networks (6LoWPAN). Resource-constrained and non-tamper resistant nature of smart sensor nodes makes RPL protocol susceptible to different threats. An attacker may use insider or outsider attack strategy to perform Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks against RPL based networks. Security and Privacy risks associated with RPL protocol may limit its global adoption and worldwide acceptance. A proper investigation of RPL specific attacks and their impacts on an underlying network needs to be done. In this paper, we present and investigate one of the catastrophic attacks named as a copycat attack, a type of replay based DoS attack against the RPL protocol. An in-depth experimental study for analyzing the impacts of the copycat attack on RPL has been done. The experimental results show that the copycat attack can significantly degrade network performance in terms of packet delivery ratio, average end-to-end delay, and average power consumption. Formal methods are promising for modeling and analyzing system requirements. However, applying formal methods to large-scale industrial projects is a remaining challenge. The industrial engineers are suffering from the lack of automated engineering methodologies to effectively conduct precise requirement models, and rigorously validate and verify (V&V) the generated models. To tackle this challenge, in this paper, we present a systematic engineering approach, named Formal Requirement Engineering Platform in Aircraft (FREPA), for formal requirement modeling and V\&V in the aerospace and aviation control domains. FREPA is an outcome of the seamless collaboration between the academy and industry over the last eight years. The main contributions of this paper include 1) an automated and systematic engineering approach FREPA to construct requirement models, validate and verify systems in the aerospace and aviation control domain, 2) a domain-specific modeling language AASRDL to describe the formal specification, and 3) a practical FREPA-based tool AeroReq which has been used by our industry partners. We have successfully adopted FREPA to seven real aerospace gesture control and two aviation engine control systems. The experimental results show that FREPA and the corresponding tool AeroReq significantly facilitate formal modeling and V&V in the industry. Reliability and determinism of Wi-Fi can be tangibly improved by means of seamless redundancy, to the point of making this technology suitable for industrial environments. As pointed out in recent papers, the most benefits can be achieved when no phenomena can simultaneously affect transmissions on all channels of a redundant link. In this paper, several aspects are analyzed which, if not properly counteracted, may worsen seamless redundancy effectiveness. Effects they cause on communication have been experimentally evaluated in real testbeds, which rely on commercial Wi-Fi devices. Then, practical guidelines are provided, which aim at preventing joint interference through a careful system design. In this paper, we discuss latency reduction techniques for mobile backhaul over Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) networks. When the latencies from both the wireless and the DOCSIS networks are added together, it can result in noticeable end-to-end system latency, particularly under network congestion. Previously, we proposed a method to improve upstream user-to-mobile core latency by coordinating the LTE and DOCSIS scheduling. The method reduces the impact on system latency from the DOCSIS network's request-grant-data loop, which is the main contributor of backhaul upstream latency. Since the method reduces latency on the DOCSIS data path, it will therefore improve performance of latency sensitive applications, particularly if TCP is used as the transport protocol, especially when the link is congested. In this paper, we investigate the effect of HARQ failure on system performance. Several areas have been improved with Deep Learning during the past years. Implementing Deep Neural Networks (DNN) for non-safety related applications have shown remarkable achievements over the past years; however, for using DNNs in safety critical applications, we are missing approaches for verifying the robustness of such models. A common challenge for DNNs occurs when exposed to out-of-distribution samples that are outside of the scope of a DNN, but which result in high confidence outputs despite no prior knowledge of such input. In this paper, we analyze three methods that separate between in- and out-of-distribution data, called supervisors, on four well-known DNN architectures. We find that the outlier detection performance improves with the quality of the model. We also analyse the performance of the particular supervisors during the training procedure by applying the supervisor at a predefined interval to investigate its performance as the training proceeds. We observe that understanding the relationship between training results and supervisor performance is crucial to improve the model's robustness and to indicate, what input samples require further measures to improve the robustness of a DNN. In addition, our work paves the road towards an instrument for safety argumentation for safety critical applications. The rapid development and deployment of network services has brought a series of challenges to researchers. On the one hand, the needs of Internet end users/applications reflect the characteristics of travel alienation, and they pursue different perspectives of service quality. On the other hand, with the explosive growth of information in the era of big data, a lot of private information is stored in the network. End users/applications naturally start to pay attention to network security. In order to solve the requirements of differentiated quality of service (QoS) and security, this paper proposes a virtual network embedding (VNE) algorithm based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL), aiming at the CPU, bandwidth, delay and security attributes of substrate network. DRL agent is trained in the network environment constructed by the above attributes. The purpose is to deduce the mapping probability of each substrate node and map the virtual node according to this probability. Finally, the breadth first strategy (BFS) is used to map the virtual links. In the experimental stage, the algorithm based on DRL is compared with other representative algorithms in three aspects: long term average revenue, long term revenue consumption ratio and acceptance rate. The results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper has achieved good experimental results, which proves that the algorithm can be effectively applied to solve the end user/application differentiated QoS and security requirements.

Cloud service brokerage is an emerging technology that attempts to simplify the consumption and operation of hybrid clouds. Today's cloud brokers attempt to insulate consumers from the vagaries of multiple clouds. To achieve the insulation, the modern cloud broker needs to disguise itself as the end-provider to consumers by creating and operating a virtual data center construct that we call a meta-cloud, which is assembled on top of a set of participating supplier clouds. It is crucial for such a cloud broker to be considered a trusted partner both by cloud consumers and by the underpinning cloud suppliers. A fundamental tenet of brokerage trust is vendor neutrality. On the one hand, cloud consumers will be comfortable if a cloud broker guarantees that they will not be led through a preferred path. And on the other hand, cloud suppliers would be more interested in partnering with a cloud broker who promises a fair apportioning of client provisioning requests. Because consumer and supplier trust on a meta-cloud broker stems from the assumption of being agnostic to supplier clouds, there is a need for a test strategy that verifies the fairness of cloud brokerage. In this paper, we propose a calculus of fairness that defines the rules to determine the operational behavior of a cloud broker. The calculus uses temporal logic to model the fact that fairness is a trait that has to be ascertained over time; it is not a characteristic that can be judged at a per-request fulfillment level. Using our temporal calculus of fairness as the basis, we propose an algorithm to determine the fairness of a broker probabilistically, based on its observed request apportioning policies. When imaging through a semi-reflective medium such as glass, the reflection of another scene can often be found in the captured images. It degrades the quality of the images and affects their subsequent analyses. In this paper, a novel deep neural network approach for solving the reflection problem in imaging is presented. Traditional reflection removal methods not only require long computation time for solving different optimization functions, their performance is also not guaranteed. As array cameras are readily available in nowadays imaging devices, we first suggest in this paper a multiple-image based depth estimation method using a convolutional neural network (CNN). The proposed network avoids the depth ambiguity problem due to the reflection in the image, and directly estimates the depths along the image edges. They are then used to classify the edges as belonging to the background or reflection. Since edges having similar depth values are error prone in the classification, they are removed from the reflection removal process. We suggest a generative adversarial network (GAN) to regenerate the removed background edges. Finally, the estimated background edge map is fed to another auto-encoder network to assist the extraction of the background from the original image. Experimental results show that the proposed reflection removal algorithm achieves superior performance both quantitatively and qualitatively as compared to the state-of-the-art methods. The proposed algorithm also shows much faster speed compared to the existing approaches using the traditional optimization methods.

The cyber-physical convergence, the fast expansion of the Internet at its edge, and tighter interactions between human users and their personal mobile devices push towards a data-centric Internet where the human user becomes more central than ever. We argue that this will profoundly impact primarily on the way data should be handled in the Next Generation Internet. It will require a radical change of the Internet data-management paradigm, from the current platform-centric to a human-centric model. In this paper we present a new paradigm for Internet data management that we name Internet of People (IoP) because it embeds human behavior models in its algorithms. To this end, IoP algorithms exploit quantitative models of the humans’ individual and social behavior, from sociology, anthropology, psychology, economics, physics. IoP is not a replacement of the current Internet networking infrastructure, but it exploits legacy Internet services as (reliable) primitives to achieve end-to-end connectivity on a global-scale. In this opinion paper, we first discuss the key features of the IoP paradigm along with the underlying research issues and challenges. Then, we present emerging data-management paradigms that are anticipating IoP.

This paper proposes an effective computational tool for brittle crack propagation problems based on a combination of a higher-order phase-field model and a non-conforming mesh using a NURBS-based isogeometric approach. This combination, as demonstrated in this paper, is of great benefit in reducing the computational cost of using a local refinement mesh and a higher-order phase-field, which needs higher derivatives of basis functions. Compared with other approaches using a local refinement mesh, the Virtual Uncommon-Knot-Inserted Master-Slave (VUKIMS) method presented here is not only simple to implement but can also reduce the variable numbers. VUKIMS is an outstanding choice in order to establish a local refinement mesh, i.e. a non-conforming mesh, in a multi-patch problem. A phase-field model is an efficient approach for various complicated crack patterns, including those with or without an initial crack path, curved cracks, crack coalescence, and crack propagation through holes. The paper demonstrates that cubic NURBS elements are ideal for balancing the computational cost and the accuracy because they can produce accurate solutions by utilising a lower degree of freedom number than an extremely fine mesh of first-order B-spline elements., Comment: 40 pages, 35 figures

Internet of Things (IoT) and its applications are the most popular research areas at present. The characteristics of IoT on one side make it easily applicable to real-life applications, whereas on the other side expose it to cyber threats. Denial of Service (DoS) is one of the most catastrophic attacks against IoT. In this paper, we investigate the prospects of using machine learning classification algorithms for securing IoT against DoS attacks. A comprehensive study is carried on the classifiers which can advance the development of anomaly-based intrusion detection systems (IDSs). Performance assessment of classifiers is done in terms of prominent metrics and validation methods. Popular datasets CIDDS-001, UNSW-NB15, and NSL-KDD are used for benchmarking classifiers. Friedman and Nemenyi tests are employed to analyze the significant differences among classifiers statistically. In addition, Raspberry Pi is used to evaluate the response time of classifiers on IoT specific hardware. We also discuss a methodology for selecting the best classifier as per application requirements. The main goals of this study are to motivate IoT security researchers for developing IDSs using ensemble learning, and suggesting appropriate methods for statistical assessment of classifier's performance.

With the improvement of sensor technology and significant algorithmic advances, the accuracy of remote heart rate monitoring technology has been significantly improved. Despite of the significant algorithmic advances, the performance of rPPG algorithm can degrade in the long-term, high-intensity continuous work occurred in evenings or insufficient light environments. One of the main challenges is that the lost facial details and low contrast cause the failure of detection and tracking. Also, insufficient lighting in video capturing hurts the quality of physiological signal. In this paper, we collect a large-scale dataset that was designed for remote heart rate estimation recorded with various illumination variations to evaluate the performance of the rPPG algorithm (Green, ICA, and POS). We also propose a low-light enhancement solution (technical solution) for remote heart rate estimation under the low-light condition. Using collected dataset, we found 1) face detection algorithm cannot detect faces in video captured in low light conditions; 2) A decrease in the amplitude of the pulsatile signal will lead to the noise signal to be in the dominant position; and 3) the chrominance-based method suffers from the limitation in the assumption about skin-tone will not hold, and Green and ICA method receive less influence than POS in dark illuminance environment. Efficient lossless coding of medical volume data with temporal axis can be achieved by motion compensated wavelet lifting. As side benefit, a scalable bit stream is generated, which allows for displaying the data at different resolution layers, highly demanded for telemedicine applications. Additionally, the similarity of the temporal base layer to the input sequence is preserved by the use of motion compensated temporal filtering. However, for medical sequences the overall rate is increased due to the specific noise characteristics of the data. The use of denoising filters inside the lifting structure can improve the compression efficiency significantly without endangering the property of perfect reconstruction. However, the design of an optimum filter is a crucial task. In this paper, we present a new method for selecting the optimal filter strength for a certain denoising filter in a rate-distortion sense. Establishing a communication bridge by transferring data driven from different embedded sensors via internet or reconcilable network protocols between enormous number of distinctively addressable objects or "things", is known as the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT can be amalgamated with multitudinous objects such as thermostats, cars, lights, refrigerators, and many more appliances which will be able to build a connection via internet. Where objects of our diurnal life can establish a network connection and get smarter with IoT, robotics can be another aspect which will get beneficial to be brought under the concept of IoT and is able to add a new perception in robotics having "Mechanical Smart Intelligence" which is generally called "Internet of Robotic Things" (IoRT). A robotic arm is a part of robotics where it is usually a programmable mechanical arm which has human arm like functionalities. In this paper, IoRT will be represented by a 5 DoF (degree of freedoms) Robotic Arm which will be able to communicate as an IoRT device, controlled with heterogeneous devices using Social IoT and "Cloud Robotics".

In this paper, we design novel interactive deep learning methods to improve semantic interactions in visual analytics applications. The ability of semantic interaction to infer analysts' precise intents during sensemaking is dependent on the quality of the underlying data representation. We propose the $\text{DeepSI}_{\text{finetune}}$ framework that integrates deep learning into the human-in-the-loop interactive sensemaking pipeline, with two important properties. First, deep learning extracts meaningful representations from raw data, which improves semantic interaction inference. Second, semantic interactions are exploited to fine-tune the deep learning representations, which then further improves semantic interaction inference. This feedback loop between human interaction and deep learning enables efficient learning of user- and task-specific representations. To evaluate the advantage of embedding the deep learning within the semantic interaction loop, we compare $\text{DeepSI}_{\text{finetune}}$ against a state-of-the-art but more basic use of deep learning as only a feature extractor pre-processed outside of the interactive loop. Results of two complementary studies, a human-centered qualitative case study and an algorithm-centered simulation-based quantitative experiment, show that $\text{DeepSI}_{\text{finetune}}$ more accurately captures users' complex mental models with fewer interactions.

This paper derives optimal spatial scaling and rate control parameters for power-efficient wireless video streaming on portable devices. A video streaming application is studied, which receives a high-resolution and high-quality video stream from a remote server and displays the content to the end-user.We show that the resolution of the input video can be adjusted such that the quality-power trade-off is optimized. Making use of a power model from the literature and subjective quality evaluation using a perceptual metric, we derive optimal combinations of the scaling factor and the rate-control parameter for encoding. For HD sequences, up to 10% of power can be saved at negligible quality losses and up to 15% of power can be saved at tolerable distortions. We consider robot learning in the context of shared autonomy, where control of the system can switch between a human teleoperator and autonomous control. In this setting we address reinforcement learning, and learning from demonstration, where there is a cost associated with human time. This cost represents the human time required to teleoperate the robot, or recover the robot from failures. For each episode, the agent must choose between requesting human teleoperation, or using one of its autonomous controllers. In our approach, we learn to predict the success probability for each controller, given the initial state of an episode. This is used in a contextual multi-armed bandit algorithm to choose the controller for the episode. A controller is learnt online from demonstrations and reinforcement learning so that autonomous performance improves, and the system becomes less reliant on the teleoperator with more experience. It is highly predicted that the roads and parking areas will be extremely congested with vehicles to the point that searching for a novel solution will not be an optional choice for conserving the sustainability rate of the overall humanity's development growth. Such issue could be overcome by developing modified generations of the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) vehicles that essentially depend on the Vertical and/or Short Take-Off and Landing (V/STOL) feature to increase the efficiency of landing capabilities on limited-space parking areas. The complexity of integrating an efficient and safe V/STOL feature in such UAM vehicles is notably difficult comparing with the conventional and normal techniques for landing and take-off. The efficient V/STOL feature should be carried out by a complete and collaborative Cyber-Physical System (CPS) processing architecture, such as the CPS-5C architecture. In this paper, we only proposed two CPS-5C physical layers of a V/STOL Autonomous Landing Guidance Assistant System (ALGAS2) processing unit to increase the reliability of the vertical landing mechanism. The proposed V/STOL-ALGAS2 system depends on Fuzzy Logic System (FLS) as the advanced control unit. Furthermore, the proposed ALGAS2 system depends on four symmetric and segregated processing ALGAS2 cores that processing the data in a fully parallel and independent manner to enhance many essential security and safety factors for the futuristic UAM vehicles. The proposed ALGAS2 digital circuits architecture has been designed using MATLAB and VHDL. Also, it has been further analyzed for the implementation and validation tests using the Intel Altera OpenVINO FPGA board. We consider the storage-retrieval rate tradeoff in private information retrieval (PIR) systems using a Shannon-theoretic approach. Our focus is mostly on the canonical two-message two-database case, for which a coding scheme based on random codebook generation and the binning technique is proposed. This coding scheme reveals a hidden connection between PIR and the classic multiple description source coding problem. We first show that when the retrieval rate is kept optimal, the proposed non-linear scheme can achieve better performance over any linear scheme. Moreover, a non-trivial storage-retrieval rate tradeoff can be achieved beyond space-sharing between this extreme point and the other optimal extreme point, achieved by the retrieve-everything strategy. We further show that with a method akin to the expurgation technique, one can extract a zero-error PIR code from the random code. In this paper, we propose to exploit the side-tuning framework for multimodal document classification. Side-tuning is a methodology for network adaptation recently introduced to solve some of the problems related to previous approaches. Thanks to this technique it is actually possible to overcome model rigidity and catastrophic forgetting of transfer learning by fine-tuning. The proposed solution uses off-the-shelf deep learning architectures leveraging the side-tuning framework to combine a base model with a tandem of two side networks. We show that side-tuning can be successfully employed also when different data sources are considered, e.g. text and images in document classification. A new concept of a multi-valued associative memory is introduced, generalizing a similar one in fuzzy neural networks. We expand the results on fuzzy associative memory with thresholds, to the case of a multi-valued one: we introduce the novel concept of such a network without numbers, investigate its properties, and give a learning algorithm in the multi-valued case. We discovered conditions under which it is possible to store given pairs of network variable patterns in such a multi-valued associative memory. In the multi-valued neural network, all variables are not numbers, but elements or subsets of a lattice, i.e., they are all only partially-ordered. Lattice operations are used to build the network output by inputs. In this paper, the lattice is assumed to be Brouwer and determines the implication used, together with other lattice operations, to determine the neural network output. In this paper, we propose a novel probabilistic variant of iterative closest point (ICP) dubbed as CoBigICP. The method leverages both local geometrical information and global noise characteristics. Locally, the 3D structure of both target and source clouds are incorporated into the objective function through bidirectional correspondence. Globally, error metric of correntropy is introduced as noise model to resist outliers. Importantly, the close resemblance between normal-distributions transform (NDT) and correntropy is revealed. To ease the minimization step, an on-manifold parameterization of the special Euclidean group is proposed. This paper proposes an image-based algorithm for detecting and cleaning the wind turbine abnormal data based on wind power curve (WPC) images. The abnormal data are categorized into three types, negative points, scattered points, and stacked points. The proposed algorithm includes three steps, data pre-cleaning, normal data extraction, and data marking. The negative abnormal points, whose wind speed is greater than cut-in speed and power is below zero, are first filtered in the data pre-cleaning step. The scatter figure of the rest wind power data forms the WPC image and corresponding binary image. In the normal data extraction step, the principle part of the WPC binary image, representing the normal data, is extracted by the mathematical morphology operation (MMO). The optimal parameter setting of MMO is determined by minimizing the dissimilarity between the extracted principle part and the reference WPC image based on Hu moments. In the data mark step, the pixel points of scattered and stacked abnormal data are successively identified. The mapping relationship between the wind power points and image pixel points is built to mark the wind turbine normal and abnormal data. The proposed image-based algorithm is compared with k -means, local outlier factor, combined algorithm based on change point grouping algorithm and quartile algorithm (CA). Numerous experiments based on 33 wind turbines from two wind farms are conducted to validate the effectiveness, efficiency, and universality of the proposed method.

In the automatic classification of colored natural textures, the idea of proposing methods that reflect human perception arouses the enthusiasm of researchers in the field of image processing and computer vision. Therefore, the color space and the methods of analysis of color and texture, must be discriminating to correspond to the human vision. Rock images are a typical example of natural images and their analysis is of major importance in the rock industry. In this paper, we combine the statistical (Local Binary Pattern (LBP) with Hue Saturation Value (HSV) and Red Green Blue (RGB) color spaces fusion) and frequency (Gabor filter and Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT)) descriptors named respectively Gabor Adjacent Local Binary Pattern Color Space Fusion (G-ALBPCSF) and DCT Adjacent Local Binary Pattern Color Space Fusion (D-ALBPCSF) for the extraction of visual textural and colorimetric features from direct view images of rocks. The textural images from the two G-ALBPCSF and D-ALBPCSF approaches are evaluated through similarity metrics such as Chi2 and the intersection of histograms that we have adapted to color histograms. The results obtained allowed us to highlight the discrimination of the rock classes. The proposed extraction method provides better classification results for various direct view rock texture images. Then it is validated by a confusion matrix giving a low error rate of 0.8% of classification.

Jumping can be an effective way of locomotion to overcome small terrain gaps or obstacles. In this paper we propose two different approaches to perform jumps with a humanoid robot. Specifically, starting from a pre-defined CoM trajectory we develop the theory for a velocity controller and for a torque controller based on an optimization technique for the evaluation of the joints input. The controllers have been tested both in simulation and on the humanoid robot iCub. In simulation the robot was able to jump using both controllers, while the real system jumped with the velocity controller only. The results highlight the importance of controlling the centroidal angular momentum and they suggest that the joint performances, namely maximum power, of the legs and torso joints, and the low level control performances are fundamental to achieve acceptable results.

Domain adaptation aims to leverage a labeled source domain to learn a classifier for the unlabeled target domain with a different distribution. Previous methods mostly match the distribution between two domains by global or class alignment. However, global alignment methods cannot achieve a fine-grained class-to-class overlap; class alignment methods supervised by pseudo-labels cannot guarantee their reliability. In this paper, we propose a simple yet efficient domain adaptation method, i.e. Cycle Label-Consistent Network (CLCN), by exploiting the cycle consistency of classification label, which applies dual cross-domain nearest centroid classification procedures to generate a reliable self-supervised signal for the discrimination in the target domain. The cycle label-consistent loss reinforces the consistency between ground-truth labels and pseudo-labels of source samples leading to statistically similar latent representations between source and target domains. This new loss can easily be added to any existing classification network with almost no computational overhead. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on MNIST-USPS-SVHN, Office-31, Office-Home and Image CLEF-DA benchmarks. Results validate that the proposed method can alleviate the negative influence of falsely-labeled samples and learn more discriminative features, leading to the absolute improvement over source-only model by 9.4% on Office-31 and 6.3% on Image CLEF-DA., Comment: Accepted by Neurocomputing

Byte-addressable, non-volatile memory (NVM) is emerging as a promising technology. To facilitate its wide adoption, employing NVM in managed runtimes like JVM has proven to be an effective approach (i.e., managed NVM). However, such an approach is runtime specific, which lacks a generic abstraction across different managed languages. Similar to the well-known filesystem primitives that allow diverse programs to access same files via the block I/O interface, managed NVM deserves the same system-wide property for persistent objects across managed runtimes with low overhead. In this paper, we present UniHeap, a new NVM framework for managing persistent objects. It proposes a unified persistent object model that supports various managed languages, and manages NVM within a shared heap that enables cross-language persistent object sharing. UniHeap reduces the object persistence overhead by managing the shared heap in a log-structured manner and coalescing object updates during the garbage collection. We implement UniHeap as a generic framework and extend it to different managed runtimes that include HotSpot JVM, cPython, and JavaScript engine SpiderMonkey. We evaluate UniHeap with a variety of applications, such as key-value store and transactional database. In this paper, we propose an automatic brain tumor segmentation approach (e.g., PixelNet) using pixel level convolutional neural network (CNN). The model extracts feature from multiple convolutional layers and concatenates them to form a hyper-column where samples a modest number of pixels for optimization. Hyper-column ensures both local and global contextual information for pixel wise predictor. The model confirms the statistical efficiency by sampling few number of pixels in training phase where spatial redundancy limits the information learning among the neighboring pixels in conventional pixel-level semantic segmentation approaches. Besides, label skewness in training data leads the convolutional model often converge to the certain classes which is a common problem in the medical dataset. We deal this problem by selecting an equal number of pixels for all the classes in sampling time. The proposed model has achieved promising results in brain tumor and ischemic stroke lesion segmentation datasets.

Representation learning on graphs, also called graph embedding, has demonstrated its significant impact on a series of machine learning applications such as classification, prediction and recommendation. However, existing work has largely ignored the rich information contained in the properties (or attributes) of both nodes and edges of graphs in modern applications, e.g., those represented by property graphs. To date, most existing graph embedding methods either focus on plain graphs with only the graph topology, or consider properties on nodes only. We propose PGE, a graph representation learning framework that incorporates both node and edge properties into the graph embedding procedure. PGE uses node clustering to assign biases to differentiate neighbors of a node and leverages multiple data-driven matrices to aggregate the property information of neighbors sampled based on a biased strategy. PGE adopts the popular inductive model for neighborhood aggregation. We provide detailed analyses on the efficacy of our method and validate the performance of PGE by showing how PGE achieves better embedding results than the state-of-the-art graph embedding methods on benchmark applications such as node classification and link prediction over real-world datasets., Comment: This paper is published in KDD 2019. Many applications in image processing require resampling of arbitrarily located samples onto regular grid positions. This is important in frame-rate up-conversion, super-resolution, and image warping among others. A state-of-the-art high quality model-based resampling technique is frequency-selective mesh-to-grid resampling which requires pre-estimation of key points. In this paper, we propose a new key point agnostic frequency-selective mesh-to-grid resampling that does not depend on pre-estimated key points. Hence, the number of data points that are included is reduced drastically and the run time decreases significantly. To compensate for the key points, a spectral weighting function is introduced that models the optical transfer function in order to favor low frequencies more than high ones. Thereby, resampling artefacts like ringing are supressed reliably and the resampling quality increases. On average, the new AFSMR is conceptually simpler and gains up to 1.2 dB in terms of PSNR compared to the original mesh-to-grid resampling while being approximately 14.5 times faster., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; Originally submitted to IEEE MMSP 2020

To ensure the high level of automation required in today's industrial applications, next-generation wireless networks must enable real-time control and automation of dynamic processes with the requirements of extreme low-latency and ultra-reliable communications. In this paper, we provide a performance assessment for the co-existence of a public enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and a local non-public factory (URLLC) network and evaluate the network conditions under which the stringent latency and reliability requirements of factory automation applications are met. The evaluations consider both an unsynchronized and a synchronized time division duplexing (TDD) deployment between the networks, as well as scenarios both with and without any macro eMBB traffic located inside the factory. The results show that an unsynchronized deployment is possible if the isolation between the networks is sufficiently high, either as a result of a separation distance, wall loss or the use of separate frequencies for the networks. A synchronized deployment will avoid the cross-link interference, but it will not resolve the problems related to the closed access and the near-far interference. If the factory contains eMBB traffic served by the overlaid macro cells, the performance of both networks will suffer due to a high level of cross-link and near-far interference. The problems related to the cross-link interference can be resolved by synchronizing the networks, while the level of the near-far interference can be reduced by allowing the eMBB users to be connected to base stations located inside the factory. Radar sensors are crucial for environment perception of driver assistance systems as well as autonomous vehicles. With a rising number of radar sensors and the so far unregulated automotive radar frequency band, mutual interference is inevitable and must be dealt with. Algorithms and models operating on radar data are required to run the early processing steps on specialized radar sensor hardware. This specialized hardware typically has strict resource-constraints, i.e. a low memory capacity and low computational power. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based approaches for denoising and interference mitigation yield promising results for radar processing in terms of performance. Regarding resource-constraints, however, CNNs typically exceed the hardware's capacities by far. In this paper we investigate quantization techniques for CNN-based denoising and interference mitigation of radar signals. We analyze the quantization of (i) weights and (ii) activations of different CNN-based model architectures. This quantization results in reduced memory requirements for model storage and during inference. We compare models with fixed and learned bit-widths and contrast two different methodologies for training quantized CNNs, i.e. the straight-through gradient estimator and training distributions over discrete weights. We illustrate the importance of structurally small real-valued base models for quantization and show that learned bit-widths yield the smallest models. We achieve a memory reduction of around 80\% compared to the real-valued baseline. In the last decades, scene text recognition has gained worldwide attention from both the academic community and actual users due to its importance in a wide range of applications. Despite achievements in optical character recognition, scene text recognition remains challenging due to inherent problems such as distortions or irregular layout. Most of the existing approaches mainly leverage recurrence or convolution-based neural networks. However, while recurrent neural networks (RNNs) usually suffer from slow training speed due to sequential computation and encounter problems as vanishing gradient or bottleneck, CNN endures a trade-off between complexity and performance. In this paper, we introduce SAFL, a self-attention-based neural network model with the focal loss for scene text recognition, to overcome the limitation of the existing approaches. The use of focal loss instead of negative log-likelihood helps the model focus more on low-frequency samples training. Moreover, to deal with the distortions and irregular texts, we exploit Spatial TransformerNetwork (STN) to rectify text before passing to the recognition network. We perform experiments to compare the performance of the proposed model with seven benchmarks. In this paper, we incorporate the Barzilai-Borwein [2] step size into gradient descent methods used to train deep networks. This allows us to adapt the learning rate using a two-point approximation to the secant equation which quasi-Newton methods are based upon. Moreover, the adaptive learning rate method presented here is quite general in nature and can be applied to widely used gradient descent approaches such as Adagrad [7] and RMSprop. We evaluate our method using standard example network architectures on widely available datasets and compare against alternatives elsewhere in the literature. In our experiments, our adaptive learning rate shows a smoother and faster convergence than that exhibited by the alternatives, with better or comparable performance.

For improving flexibility and robustness of the engineering of automated production systems (aPS) in case of extending, reducing or modifying parts, several approaches propose an encapsulation and clustering of related functions, e.g. from the electrical, mechanical or software engineering, based on a modular architecture. Considering the development of these modules, there are different stages, e.g. module planning or functional engineering, which have to be completed. A reference model that addresses the different stages for the engineering of aPS is proposed by AutomationML. Due to these different stages and the integration of several engineering disciplines, e.g. mechanical, electrical/electronic or software engineering, information not limited to one discipline are stored redundantly increasing the effort to transfer information and the risk of inconsistency. Although, data formats for the storage and exchange of plant engineering information exist, e.g. AutomationML, fixed domain specific structures and relations of the information, e.g. for automated material flow systems (aMFS), are missing. Hardware accelerator for convolution neural network (CNNs) enables real time applications of artificial intelligence technology. However, most of the accelerators only support dense CNN computations or suffers complex control to support fine grained sparse networks. To solve above problem, this paper presents an efficient CNN accelerator with 1-D vector broadcasted input to support both dense network as well as vector sparse network with the same hardware and low overhead. Accurate path following is challenging for autonomous robots operating in uncertain environments. Adaptive and predictive control strategies are crucial for a nonlinear robotic system to achieve high-performance path following control. In this paper, we propose a novel learning-based predictive control scheme that couples a high-level model predictive path following controller (MPFC) with a low-level learning-based feedback linearization controller (LB-FBLC) for nonlinear systems under uncertain disturbances. The low-level LB-FBLC utilizes Gaussian Processes to learn the uncertain environmental disturbances online and tracks the reference state accurately with a probabilistic stability guarantee. Meanwhile, the high-level MPFC exploits the linearized system model augmented with a virtual linear path dynamics model to optimize the evolution of path reference targets, and provides the reference states and controls for the low-level LB-FBLC. Increasing the resolution of image sensors has been a never ending struggle since many years. In this paper, we propose a novel image sensor layout, which allows for the acquisition of images at a higher resolution and improved quality. For this, the image sensor makes use of non-regular sampling, which reduces the impact of aliasing. Therewith, it allows for capturing details, which would not be possible with state-of-the-art sensors of the same number of pixels. The non-regular sampling is achieved by rotating prototype pixel cells in a non-regular fashion. As not the whole area of the pixel cell is sensitive to light, a non-regular spatial integration of the incident light is obtained. Based on the sensor output data, a high-resolution image can be reconstructed by performing a deconvolution with respect to the integration area and an extrapolation of the information to the insensitive regions of the pixels. To solve this challenging task, we introduce a novel joint sparse deconvolution and extrapolation algorithm. The union of non-regular sampling and the proposed reconstruction allows for achieving a higher resolution and therewith an improved imaging quality.

The evolution of the mobile landscape is coupled with the ubiquitous nature of the Internet with its intermittent wireless connectivity and the web services. Achieving the web service reliability results in low communication overhead and retrieving the appropriate response. The Middleware Approach (MA) is highly tended to achieve the web service reliability. This paper proposes a Reliable Service Architecture using Middleware (RSAM) that achieves the reliable web services consumption. The enhanced architecture focuses on ensuring and tracking the request execution under the communication limitations and service temporal unavailability. It considers the most measurement factors including: request size, response size, and consuming time. We conducted experiments to compare the enhanced architecture with the traditional one that has no additional overhead. In these experiments, we covered several cases to prove the achievement of reliability. Both a high spatial and a high temporal resolution of images and videos are desirable in many applications such as entertainment systems, monitoring manufacturing processes, or video surveillance. Due to the limited throughput of pixels per second, however, there is always a trade-off between acquiring sequences with a high spatial resolution at a low temporal resolution or vice versa. In this paper, a modified sensor concept is proposed which is able to acquire both a high spatial and a high temporal resolution. This is achieved by dynamically reading out only a subset of pixels in a non-regular order to obtain a high temporal resolution. A full high spatial resolution is then obtained by performing a subsequent three-dimensional reconstruction of the partially acquired frames. The main benefit of the proposed dynamic readout is that for each frame, different sampling points are available which is advantageous since this information can significantly enhance the reconstruction quality of the proposed reconstruction algorithm. Using the proposed dynamic readout strategy, gains in PSNR of up to 8.55 dB are achieved compared to a static readout strategy. Accurate position sensing is important for state estimation and control in robotics. Reliable and accurate position sensors are usually expensive and difficult to customize. Incorporating them into systems that have very tight volume constraints such as modular robots are particularly difficult. PaintPots are low-cost, reliable, and highly customizable position sensors, but their performance is highly dependent on the manufacturing and calibration process. This paper presents a Kalman filter with a simplified observation model developed to deal with the non-linearity issues that result in the use of low-cost microcontrollers. In addition, a complete solution for the use of PaintPots in a variety of sensing modalities including manufacturing, characterization, and estimation is presented for an example modular robot, SMORES-EP. Real world datasets often contain noisy labels, and learning from such datasets using standard classification approaches may not produce the desired performance. In this paper, we propose a Gaussian Mixture Discriminant Analysis (GMDA) with noisy label for each class. We introduce flipping probability and class probability and use EM algorithms to solve the discriminant problem with label noise. We also provide the detail proofs of convergence. Because the magnitude of inner products with its basis functions are invariant to rotation and scale change, the Fourier-Mellin transform has long been used as a component in Euclidean invariant 2D shape recognition systems. Yet Fourier-Mellin transform magnitudes are only invariant to rotation and scale changes about a known center point, and full Euclidean invariant shape recognition is not possible except when this center point can be consistently and accurately identified. In this paper, we describe a system where a Fourier-Mellin transform is computed at every point in the image. The spatial support of the Fourier-Mellin basis functions is made local by multiplying them with a polynomial envelope. Significantly, the magnitudes of convolutions with these complex filters at isolated points are not (by themselves) used as features for Euclidean invariant shape recognition because reliable discrimination would require filters with spatial support large enough to fully encompass the shapes. Instead, we rely on the fact that normalized histograms of magnitudes are fully Euclidean invariant. We demonstrate a system based on the VLAD machine learning method that performs Euclidean invariant recognition of 2D shapes and requires an order of magnitude less training data than comparable methods based on convolutional neural networks., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

To date, visual question answering (VQA) (i.e., image QA and video QA) is still a holy grail in vision and language understanding, especially for video QA. Compared with image QA that focuses primarily on understanding the associations between image region-level details and corresponding questions, video QA requires a model to jointly reason across both spatial and long-range temporal structures of a video as well as text to provide an accurate answer. In this paper, we specifically tackle the problem of video QA by proposing a Structured Two-stream Attention network, namely STA, to answer a free-form or open-ended natural language question about the content of a given video. First, we infer rich longrange temporal structures in videos using our structured segment component and encode text features. Then, our structured two-stream attention component simultaneously localizes important visual instance, reduces the influence of background video and focuses on the relevant text. Finally, the structured two-stream fusion component incorporates different segments of query and video aware context representation and infers the answers. Experiments on the large-scale video QA dataset TGIF-QA show that our proposed method significantly surpasses the best counterpart (i.e., with one representation for the video input) by 13.0%, 13.5%, 11.0% and 0.3 for Action, Trans., TrameQA and Count tasks. It also outperforms the best competitor (i.e., with two representations) on the Action, Trans., TrameQA tasks by 4.1%, 4.7%, and 5.1%.

A fault diagnosis method for power electronics converters based on deep feedforward network and wavelet compression is proposed in this paper. The transient historical data after wavelet compression are used to realize the training of fault diagnosis classifier. Firstly, the correlation analysis of the voltage or current data running in various fault states is performed to remove the redundant features and the sampling point. Secondly, the wavelet transform is used to remove the redundant data of the features, and then the training sample data is greatly compressed. The deep feedforward network is trained by the low frequency component of the features, while the training speed is greatly accelerated. The average accuracy of fault diagnosis classifier can reach over 97%. Finally, the fault diagnosis classifier is tested, and final diagnosis result is determined by multiple-groups transient data, by which the reliability of diagnosis results is improved. Aiming for a higher economic efficiency in manufacturing, an increased degree of automation is a key enabler. However, assessing the technical feasibility of an automated assembly solution for a dedicated process is difficult and often determined by the geometry of the given product parts. Among others, decisive criterions of the automation feasibility are the ability to separate and isolate single parts or the capability of component self-alignment in final position. To assess the feasibility, a questionnaire based evaluation scheme has been developed and applied by Fraunhofer researchers. However, the results strongly depend on the implicit knowledge and experience of the single engineer performing the assessment. This paper presents NeuroCAD, a software tool that automates the assessment using voxelization techniques. The approach enables the assessment of abstract and production relevant geometries features through deep-learning based on CAD files.

To obtain depth information from a stereo camera setup, a common way is to conduct disparity estimation between the two views; the disparity map thus generated may then also be used to synthesize arbitrary intermediate views. A straightforward approach to disparity estimation is block matching, which performs well with perspective data. When dealing with non-perspective imagery such as obtained from ultra wide-angle fisheye cameras, however, block matching meets its limits. In this paper, an adapted disparity estimation approach for fisheye images is introduced. The proposed method exploits knowledge about the fisheye projection function to transform the fisheye coordinate grid to a corresponding perspective mesh. Offsets between views can thus be determined more accurately, resulting in more reliable disparity maps. By re-projecting the perspective mesh to the fisheye domain, the original fisheye field of view is retained. The benefit of the proposed method is demonstrated in the context of intermediate view synthesis, for which both objectively evaluated as well as visually convincing results are provided.

This paper studies input-to-state stability (ISS) of general nonlinear time-delay systems subject to delay-dependent impulse effects. Sufficient conditions for ISS are constructed by using the method of Lyapunov functionals. It is shown that, when the continuous dynamics are ISS but the discrete dynamics governing the delay-dependent impulses are not, the impulsive system as a whole is ISS provided the destabilizing impulses do not occur too frequently. On the contrary, when the discrete dynamics are ISS but the continuous dynamics are not, the delayed impulses must occur frequently enough to overcome the destabilizing effects of the continuous dynamics so that the ISS can be achieved for the impulsive system. Particularly, when the discrete dynamics are ISS and the continuous dynamics are also ISS or just stable for the zero input, the impulsive system is ISS for arbitrary impulse time sequences. Compared with the existing results on impulsive time-delay systems, the obtained ISS criteria are more general in the sense that these results are applicable to systems with delay dependent impulses while the existing ones are not. Moreover, when consider time-delay systems with delay-free impulses, our result for systems with unstable continuous dynamics and stabilizing impulses is less conservative than the existing ones, as a weaker condition on the upper bound of impulsive intervals is obtained. Wearable electronic equipment is constantly evolving and is increasing the integration of humans with technology. Available in various forms, these flexible and bendable devices sense and can measure the physiological and muscular changes in the human body and may use those signals to machine control. The MYO gesture band, one such device, captures Electromyography data (EMG) using myoelectric signals and translates them to be used as input signals through some predefined gestures. Use of this device in a multi-modal environment will not only increase the possible types of work that can be accomplished with the help of such device, but it will also help in improving the accuracy of the tasks performed. This paper addresses the fusion of input modalities such as speech and myoelectric signals captured through a microphone and MYO band, respectively, to control a robotic arm. Experimental results obtained as well as their accuracies for performance analysis are also presented.
